Sod turning for Habitat build

Local dignitaries and the families who will own the new duplex participated in a sod turning ceremony on the 1200 block of 106th Street Thursday.

The sod has been turned for the first build of the Battlefords chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

The ceremony to mark the beginning of construction took place Thursday afternoon on the 1200 block of 106th Street, where a duplex is going to be constructed. On hand were Habitat officials from the Battlefords and Saskatoon, along with MLA Herb Cox, North Battleford mayor Ian Hamilton, Town of Battleford councillor Gordon Yarde and other officials.

The provincial government is partnering with Habitat for Humanity in the build, with funding of

The build will be a duplex, with each home containing four bedrooms and a basement.

Introduced at the event were the families who will own the two homes once the build is completed.

Nicole Horse and her sons Zidane and Nicholai were introduced as the future occupants of one duplex. Kristen Scott and her sons Keegan and Jacob will be moving into the other.

The occupants will receive an interest-free mortgage and are also donating volunteer hours and sweat equity towards the project.

Horse said it “means a whole lot” to be able to own their new home. She looks forward to being part of the build. “I can’t wait to actually get my hands in the dirt and start going.”

For her children, it means their own room and the chance to get their cat

back. Their pet had been staying elsewhere while they were in rental accommodations.

Scott, who had been renting in Battleford, said she “couldn’t even express” what it meant to own their own home in that neighbourhood.

“This is our soon-to-be actual home for us,” she said in front of the space where the duplex is to be built.

In addition to the sodturning event, there was acknowledgement of those making donations to the project.

Among those were Glenn and Caren Hornick, who had donated the 106th Street location towards the Habitat build.

The Hornicks also confirmed at the sod-turning that they will donate an additional lot to the Habitat organization for a future build.

Early morning fire destroys Bargain Shop Staff A major fire in the early hours of Thursday morning has destroyed the Bargain Shop on 101st Street in North Battleford.

The North Battleford Fire Department was called to the fire at 4:28 a.m. with two pumper trucks, one aerial truck, one command truck, a utility unit and 13 firefighters.

The Town of Battleford Fire Department assisted, supplying two pumper trucks, one command truck and 12 firefighters.

SaskEnergy and SaskPower also responded to terminate utility services to the building.

There were no injuries.

Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Steinborn was appreciative of the co-operation and support shown to his crew that day.

“Thank you, to the Town of Battleford Fire Department,” said Steinborn.

“Their co-operation fighting this fire was an asset.

He added, “The community is to be commended in supporting our personnel, they provided us with coffee

and snacks during this long fight.”

Crews remained on the scene until 2:37 p.m., a total of 10 hours.

The building was a total loss, however firefighters were able to protect the adjoining vacant building and the Fabricland buiding.

Employees from Fabricland, located next door, say their store was spared major damage. They were closed for the day, however, due to heavy smoke throughout the area.

There is no word yet on the dollar amount of damage or what caused the blaze however the investigation is underway.

The fire occurred just a day before the International Street Performer Festival was due to take place on that same city block Friday, Saturday and Sunday. As a result, the festival was moved one block north.

north by one block.”

The performance pitches were in front of City Hall and in front of the library park.

The food vendors and artisans were located on 13th Avenue as well.

“The public’s safety was

the most important factor in making the decision to move the festival for 2015,” said Kissick. “We hope that everyone understands the reason for this relocation.”

She added, “Our deepest sympathies for the owners and employees of the Bar-

gain Shop. We are happy that no one was injured in this devastating fire.”

Thursday, 101st Street between 11th and 12th Avenue were closed to vehicle traffic due to the fire. Pedestrian traffic was accessible on the north side sidewalk of 101st Street.

According to local historian Richard Hiebert, the building was erected around 1960.

NBFD responded to a smoke report at Carousel Bingo at 6:36 p.m. Thursday.

On arrival it was reported to the department by occupants that there was no smoke in the building. The call to the department was for a small smouldering area at the Bargain Shop fire. Fire crews were able to extinguish it in five minutes.

Earlier that day, at 9:36 a.m., NBFD had attended a call at 1702 Trudeau Street where smoke from cooking on a stovetop activated a smoke detector. They responded with one pumper and four fighters. There was no damage and no one was injured.

CSI rating drops, NB still on top

In spite of a decrease in crime across the board in 2014, North Battleford remains at the top of the Crime Severity Index for cities over 10,000 population.

Statistics Canada released its 2014 police-reported crime statistics numbers Wednesday.

The Crime Severity Index score for the North Battleford RCMP municipal police service was 274.53, number one in Canada for cities over 10,000. The city also finished first among cities over 10,000 in the Nonviolent Crime Severity Index at 276.45.

But there was one piece of good news. The city didn’t finish first in the Violent

Crime Severity Index again.

North Battleford dropped to second overall in that index at 267.71. Williams Lake, B.C. was first with a score of 314.2.

The crime severity index measures both the volume and the severity of crime in a community.

North Battleford’s CSI score dropped 16.38 per cent. The violent crime severity number is down 13.39 per cent, and the nonviolent CSI down 17.38 per cent.

Despite the significant decline, the CSI score was still more than Williams Lake (235.23), Thompson, Man. (212.2) and Prince Albert (206.38).

In the nonviolent CSI category North Battleford was well ahead, with Yellowknife, N.W.T. second at

218.71.

The CSI ranking compared values for 303 police services policing communities over 10,000 population across Canada.

The community has been working to turn around its reputation as a haven for criminal activity. Efforts have included establishment of the HUB, the appointment of a community safety coordinator and the hiring of Community Safety Officers to provide enchanced bylaw enforcement, among others.

One explanation for North Battleford topping the CSI list again, in spite of its overall crime drop, was because the overall CSI has been dropping all over Canada. Statistics Canada calculated the CSI value for Canada at 66.7 in 2014,

Lighthouse apartments approved

North Battleford city council has approved a discretionary land use application by The Lighthouse supported living to build a three-bedroom apartment unit.

The apartments would be within their existing facility at 962 - 102nd St., with the intention of offering support to those who’ve had difficulty living independently in the past.

The length of stay of residents there would be between six and 12 months and they would be required to attend the various programming offered at the Lighthouse as well as within the community. The facility already offers a homeless shelter with several beds as

well as meals to clients and other services.

There was a letter from Canadian National, however, in which they indicated they did not support the application due to its “sensitive nature,” and urged mitigation measures to minimize sound.

Still, council approved the motion unanimously.

Council also indicated a stipulation will be put in so that the discretionary use lasts as long as The Lighthouse owns the facility.

In a memo, City Manager Jim Puffalt praised the initiative. “Congratulations to The Lighthouse for taking this initiative as assisted transitional housing is absolutely key to help people transition from homelessness to independent living,” he stated.

As a whole, Saskatchewan scored poorly. It recorded the worst CSI score in Canada as a province, even though its CSI and its crime rates had declined. Its CSI was 123.4, a drop of two per cent.

Among metropolitan areas over 100,000 population, Saskatchewan’s major cities also scored poorly, with Saskatoon finishing first in Canada with a CSI score of 109.7. Regina finished in second place at 102.8.

Reduction in 2014 Crime Severity Index for NB

The 2014 Crime Severity Index for Canadian cities with a population over 10,000 has been released by Statistics Canada.

The efforts of the members of the Battlefords detachment and community partners are reflected in the reduction in the 2014 CSI for North Battleford. While more work is needed, North Battleford has seen a significant decline in all three CSI categories that exceeds the overall decline seen nationally and provincially. See Appendix A. The top factors that influenced our rating for non-violent crime this year were mischief and breaking and entering.

North Battleford has high mischief activity and while many of these are related to vandalism the tabulation of this statistic also includes the police response to calls related to intoxicated persons both in and out of residences. Additionally, a significant number of calls for service at the Battlefords detachment involve individuals with addictions or mental health concerns. The response to these issues is not a problem that can be solved by the police alone and requires a concentrated, multi-agency response with a longterm strategy.

The RCMP is working with community partners and is committed to working with all agencies to find solutions to these issues. Programs such as Crime Free Housing and Community Safety Audits currently underway will help address property crimes such as breaking and entering. There is no short-term fix for these challenges. However, work started now will pay dividends in future years.

The top influencing factors contributing to our violent CSI in 2014 were robberies, discharging of firearms and assaults, which decreased by 22 per cent. These crimes are a direct police responsibility and the Battlefords Detachment has prepared a long-term strategy to address these issues.

Crime analysis is key to the implementation of an intelligence-led policing model. Intelligence-led policing is a business model and managerial philosophy where data analysis and crime intelligence are pivotal to an objective, decision-making framework that facilitates crime and problem reduction, disruption and prevention through strategic management and effective enforcement strategies that targets both prolific and serious offenders and the development of an understanding of crimes influenced by social issues such as drug and alcohol addictions.

In the past year, the realignment and work done within the Detachment to streamline our processes and improve our policing response are paying dividends as exhibited by the downward trend in CSI numbers. The proposed policing plan will be instrumental in moving to an intelligenceled policing model and for the start of a policing team to move the City of North Battleford from its long standing ranking at the top of the Crime Severity Index.

Armed with a sound policing plan, our commitment to work with other organizations such as the City of North Battleford, Health Care, Social Services and Mental Health professionals, to assist those with addictions and mental health issues, the Battlefords Detachment remains committed to professional service delivery and a continued effort to reduce crime and address social issues in the City of North Battleford.

CSI Background The Crime Severity Index is a measure of police-reported crime that reflects the relative seriousness of individual offences and tracks changes in crime severity.

For the Crime Severity Index, each crime is assigned a weight depending on its seriousness and as such, serious crimes have more impact on fluctuations in the Index. For instance, weights used in the Crime Severity Index range

The seriousness of each offence is determined by using objective sentencing data from the nation’s courts. Each individual offence is “weighted” according to the severity of the sentences handed down by judges. Sentencing data

come from Statistics Canada’s Adult and Youth Courts Surveys. Weights for the index are based on the average of five years of courts sentencing data and they are updated every five years, using the most recent data available from the courts.

Shooting on 101st St. July 22 Staff The Battlefords RCMP is requesting assistance from the public for information relating to a shooting incident.

Wednesday, July 22, at approximately 7 p.m., RCMP responded to a complaint of a man shot on the 1800 block of 101st Street.

Members arrived on scene and immediately began treating the male victim for his injuries.

Several perpetrators had gone to the residence wearing masks and got in an altercation with the victim, according to police. As a result of the altercation the victim was shot.

Youth arrested for possession of a firearm Staff Between 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 21 and 6 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, North Battleford RCMP responded to approximately 35 calls for service.

Tuesday

• An officer located a male youth carrying a firearm along Highway 40, west of Battleford, at 6:47 a.m.

The youth was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of property obtained by crime.

• Officers assisted WPD Ambulance outside a residence on Martin Crescent regarding an injured and combative man in a yard at 9:33 a.m. The male was transported by ambulance for the treatment of his injuries, which appeared to be a result of a physical altercation. He was unco-operative with a police investigation.

• A Community Safety Officer stopped a vehicle

• A 19-year-old man has been charged with breaking and entering, possession of property obtained by crime, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats after an incident on Saulteaux First Nation that was reported at 9:12 p.m.

• There was a report that someone had broken into a vehicle on Meighen Crescent overnight and had stolen items from the vehicle.

Mahon noted the firefighters were away from July 8 to July 14 to assist in a Saskatchewan-wide effort to protect the town of La Ronge.

“Congratulations to them and the fire department folks,” he said, including Fire Chief Larry Gabruch and Deputy Fire Chief Geoff Thompson.

It was a joint effort with the City of North Battleford, said the mayor.

“They went up together and they had [mutual] backup plans in place … from the Battlefords perspective.”

North Battleford and Battleford sent five personnel each, including two mechanics and three emergency medical technicians.

The equipment that went along included an engine and half-ton support unit from the Town of Battleford, plus an engine, a wildland unit and a tanker from North Battleford.

Town paving tender awarded

The Town of Battleford has awarded the tender for this year’s paving projects to D. Jorgenson Holdings Ltd., which operates as Northern Blacktop of Saskatoon.

At last week’s meeting, the tender was awarded for $698, 727.50, plus GST, with

a start date of Aug. 17 and a substantial performance date of Sept. 15. The project will include paving on 2nd Avenue from 15th Street to 30th Street, as well as some curbing and sidewalks.

The bid came in close to what the 2015 budget called for, however Town Administrator Sheryl Ballendine said, “We don’t have much

wiggle room there, really.”

Catterall and Wright Consulting Engineers, which undertook the tender process, also recommended the Town maintain a budget of $805,000 to cover the costs of any additional work that may be required.

“We know that from the work we had done on 1st between 17th and 19th that

when you get in there and start doing … these kinds of things you end up having some issues,” said Ballendine. “That’s why they suggested we put a contingency in there.”

Northern Blacktop’s bid was the lower of two. The other bidder was G and C Asphalt with a bid of $888,770.75.

100th St. rehab into week three Staff Work continues to progress on the 100th Street Rehabilitation Project from 14th Avenue to 20th Avenue.

Surface milling has been completed for the entire six blocks, and the road will remain rough until all of the

underground work is completed and a final top lift of pavement can be done, says a notice issued by the City of North Battleford.

This coming week, underground crews will continue to work northward along the 1500 block of 100th Street replacing the

water main. Businesses on this block will remain on temporary water supplies, and the street will be closed to traffic. Businesses are accessible from the back alley, or from 15th Avenue or 16th Avenue.

Work is also expected to begin on streetlights and

buried cables next week.

This may result in temporary lane or road closures as the work progresses.

In its release, the City of North Battleford reminds motorists to use caution when travelling through the area and to respect the safety of workers.

RM of NB proposes subdivision

The proposed subdivision would be just west of Millar Road, north of Forest Hall Road north of the city.

It calls for eight residential lots.

North Stars send top scorer Saharchuk west The Battlefords North Stars announced Thursday afternoon they traded 201415 leading scorer Matthew Saharchuk to the British Columbia Hockey League’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

In return, the North Stars receive Dustin Gorgi, a 6’3’’ forward who spent last season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Olds Grizzlys and Grand Prairie Storm, scoring nine goals and nine assists in a combined 58 games.

Saharchuk, a native of Fort St. James, B.C., scored 16 goals and added 20 assists in 44 games last season before scoring twice and assisting on six others in the playoffs.

He was acquired from the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers as the future consideration from the trade that sent Josh Betinol to Vernon during the 2013-14 season.

Both Saharchuk and Gorgi were born in 1995, meaning this is their final season of junior hockey.

that chance, no difference than Saharchuk did. We feel we’re getting the same player in Dustin but obviously he’s got two full seasons (of junior ‘A’) under his belt already.” Hasselberg says Gorgi adds to what is already shaping up to be an i m p r e s s i ve lineup.

“I think our offense is going to be based off depth and the way we play,” he said. “We’re going to make some changes to the way we play and we’re going to tailor it to our personel.

We’re hoping they’re going to help each other be successful and that’s going to be kind of our theme going forward.”

Gorgi, along with the two other players the North Stars have brought in, defenceman Jordan Wiest and forward Connor Navrot, is a big player, something Hasselberg says may or may not be a coincidence.

“I just think when players like that become available you have to act quickly,” he admitted. “With all three of those acquisitions being bigger players that’s

something we wanted to address and I think to be successful in this league you need a combination of size, skill and speed and I think we’ve got a good combination of all of the above.”

Hasselberg says he doesn’t think there will be any more additions to his club.

“I really like what [the roster] looks like,” he said.

“The style of players that we have coming in and the attitude and character of the kids is what we want to build around. We’re going to let these guys sort out the process of player selection and give them every tool we can for them to be successful and play the best hockey they can. Slowly we’ll pick a roster that we feel is going to represent the Battlefords and be one of the premier teams in this league.”

The 2015-16 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season kicks off in four weeks as the North Stars will begin training camp.

There will be two days of testing for players, including an on-ice session Aug. 31.

An early playoff exit makes for a long summer for a team, but especially for the coaching staff. Hasselberg

says he can’t wait to get the season going.

“I’ve been excited for well over a month,” he said. “A lot of work and preparation goes into the work over the summers and I don’t think a lot of people see what we do as coaches. When you’re getting down the final stages of the summer you’re just counting down the days and hoping things go quickly and there’s no more hand grenades thrown your way so you can just get everyone on the ice, healthy, and ready to go.”

The North Stars will then play their first pre-season game when they host the Kindersley Klippers Sept.

1 at the Civic Centre. They then play a “home and home” with the RBC Cup host Lloydminster Bobcats in Wainwright and Lloydminster Sept. 4 and 5.

The regular season begins Sept. 18 when the North Stars once again welcome the Klippers to the Civic Centre. This will mark the third year in a row in which the two Kramer Division rivals square off to open the season for the North Stars.

Early in October the North Stars will play two games in Warman as part of the SJHL Showcase.

“It’s not something we do at all, typically,” he laughed in reference to trading away their top scorer. “Matt was very good to us and you want to make sure you’re doing what’s best for the players and he wanted to play closer to home, closer to family and friends and then for personal reasons as well he thought playing in B.C. was going to be best for him.”

This wasn’t a trade that came out of the blue, either.

“We worked all summer on that one to make sure we got the value that we felt we deserved and couldn’t be more excited about the deal we got done,” he said.

Things go from bad to worse for Roughriders Never before in my life have I hoped a head coach is wrong more than I do right now.

Prior to Sunday’s home game against Hamilton, Roughriders coach Corey Chamblin told his team in his pregame speech, “This will determine what type of team you’re gonna be for the rest of the season!”

TSN cameras caught the address and the commentators noted how fiery Chamblin was in his talk.

The club then proceeded to blow a 21-17 lead in the fourth quarter and lose 3121 for its fifth consecutive defeat to open the 2015 CFL season.

Of course to make matters worse, quarterback Kevin Glenn got injured making a tackle on an interception he threw at the end of the third quarter and was unable to finish the game. His status is now in question for this Friday’s game at the division-leading Edmonton Eskimos.

Initially, the inkling is that this season is a writeoff and we haven’t even hit August yet.

Upon my return home after the game, my wife asked,

And the answer to that question provided the one slim glimmer of hope the team has at this point.

No, they are not eliminated from the playoffs and there are still 13 games to go. In my first season calling games in 1999, when the club finished 3-15, the Riders were miraculously in the playoff picture right down to the final weekend.

But something needs to change with this team immediately. There’s one bullet left in the gun and should they falter at Commonwealth Stadium this upcoming weekend, it would be tough to convince even the most-optimistic of fans – or even the players - that this season can be saved.

Defense cost Saskatchewan the Hamilton game. Just like all

of their games so far this year. Chamblin, the club’s defacto defensive co-ordinator, tweaked their approach and applied considerably more pressure against the Ticats on Sunday than we’ve seen all season. But the result was the same.

“Just like you say, we brought the heat,” Chamblin said after the game. “We got after (Ticats QB Zach Collaros) and did everything we could. That’s football and we couldn’t keep them out of the endzone. The thing we can’t do is quit, no matter what. This is one of the toughest situations they’ll ever be in but we have to fight another day.”

Amidst all of Chamblin’s postgame quotes, that was the kernel which stuck out to me. “We couldn’t keep them out of the endzone.”

So the time has come for Chamblin to relinquish the

duty of calling defensive plays and hand it over to Greg Quick, the man whose business card actually says “Defensive Co-ordinator”.

The facts are staring the Roughriders right in the face. What they’ve been doing simply isn’t working. There have been promises all season long but they’ve come up empty each and every week.

It’s come to this.

Receiver Weston Dressler has emerged as the leader of this football club in the absence of injured quarterback Darian Durant and even he has run out of answers.

“It’s getting harder and harder to talk to you guys,” Dressler told us on CKRM’s postgame radio show.

“Coach told us to remember this day. We’re at the bottom and have nowhere to go but up.”

That part is likely true.

And it was so sad to see most of the 31,683 fans in attendance on Sunday head to the exits with 1:41 remaining. There was so much hope in their faces all game long, but it is quickly evaporating.

“You never want to see people leaving early when there’s still time on the clock. It’s tough,” Dressler continued. “If we had the answers we’d be winning games instead of losing them.”

That was the toughest part to digest. The Riders don’t have the answers and if they don’t, who does?

It’s time to try something different, before it’s too late. The clock has started ticking on Corey Chamblin’s mostly successful time in Saskatchewan and no doubt there will be plenty

of calls for his dismissal between now and Friday. But that, assuredly, won’t happen.

“I think, no matter what, through social media the players are gonna read (speculation on his future) and they shouldn’t be worried about my future,” Chamblin said calmly.

“They should be worried about theirs. My mindset is the guys in that room. As long as I’m here, that’ll be my focus; to get wins for the guys in that locker room.”

For the last couple of weeks Chamblin has sounded like a dead man walking and it’s clear the team is down to its last out.

But they’re not giving up.

They can’t. Not yet.

“It’s gonna be a heckuva ride when we pull out of this thing,” Dressler concluded.

It has to start Friday.

1-888-470-7997 OBITUARIES JEAN DUNN (KENT/MAXWELL) SADLER: Jean passed away on Saturday, July 18th at the Royal University Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born at Radisson, the youngest child of Wallace and Louisa Kent, who were formerly of Cornwall, England. She grew up on the farm a few miles from town, the beloved prairies soon ingrained in her heart and soul. Theirs was a large family of seven, Pauline, Lydia, Bill, Tom, Don, and Joyce, who all predeceased her. She attended local schools and after graduation took the Business Course at the Saskatoon Business College, afterwards working for the Income Tax Department. In 1948 she married Bill Maxwell and eventually they raised six children- Kent (deceased), Terry (Murray) King, Penny MacArthur (Bill), Cheryl (deceased), Darin (Nadine, Kernon (Connie), and son-in-law, Kelly Gray. Her children, Ray’s children, and their grandchildren and great grandchildren, were the focus of her life. She exemplified the best in love and caring for all those around her. Bill Maxwell died suddenly in 1972 and Jean was left with the responsibility of managing the family affairs on her own for many years- which she did very effectively. In 1980, Jean married Rev. Ray Sadler and together they shared successful ministries at Battleford and in Burnaby, BC. Although she always claimed she was not cut out to be a minister’s wife, she was an important part of the team both in the church and at home. Jean was an excellent homemaker, an artist, a volunteer, and most of all a good friend. She loved life, loved nature and wonders of creation, and was a fun loving person all her life. She will be sadly missed. The Memorial Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22nd at Mayfair United Church, Sasktoon. Germaine was predeceased by her husband of 57 years Cornelius (Cony )1992 ,her parents Marie Vany and Nestor Gregoire, her sisters ,Leah Jeanne Philomine Claire, brothers, Alphonse Joe Louis, Sonin-law, Wilfrid Hinz, and Grand -son Jim Nachtegaele. Germaine was born February 24, 1916 in Cudworth, Saskatchewan to Marie (VANY) Lambert and Nestor Gregoire. In 1918 Nestor decided to move his family to the Prince District and then to the McMillan District where Mother took her elementary schooling. In 1929 Mom enrolled at the newly opened high school in North Battleford , The Convent of the Child Jesus, where the order of nuns, by the same name, were teaching. Sadly mother left her Alma Mater in 1931 after only three years to help her parents on the farm. Germaine married a fellow Belgian, Cornelius Nachtegaele, on February 27, 1935. They operated a mixed farming operation and raised a family of 6 children: four daughters, Sylvia, Betty, Denise and Karen and two sons: Maurice and Leo. Germaine and Cony moved to North Battleford when Karen started school at St Joseph. They started travelling after Dad retired from farming. They travelled to places across Canada and the US and to Mexico, Jamaica but the highlight was their trip to BELGIUM. Mom was a member of the rural Homemakers Club that became the WI or Women’s Institute .When she moved to North Battleford she joined the St. Joseph’s CWL, Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the Museum. She was honored as a Nation Builder by the Battleford’s North West Historical Society in 2005. Dad passed away in January 1992, and then mom travelled with the “Snow Birds” to Yuma to enjoy the warmer climate. Our Mother was a very talented individual. She loved singing, dancing and storytelling. She mastered many skills such as knitting, crocheting, embroidery and quilting to name a few. She was also a wonderful cook. As children we enjoyed her pies, creampuffs, birthday cakes and cinnamon rolls. Mom leaves her family with fond memories of her unconditional love, her unselfish dedication to her family and the time and talents she shared with her church and her community. She will be sadly missed. Vigil of Prayer was held on Sunday, July 5, 2015 - 7:00 p.m. from St. Joseph Calasanctius Roman Catholic Church with Jean Pawlus Presiding. Pianist was Mrs. M. Venus may not be visible with the unaided eye, but people have been able to view the bright planet during inferior conjunction through a telescope, using extreme care, of course, not to look at the unfiltered sun. That would be very dangerous. Venus and Mars close in for a quasi conjunction late in the month — an eastern sky, early morning event, where the two planets are nine degrees apart.

Mars has been hidden behind the sun for most of July, and just begins visibility in the early morning before sunrise. Aug. 12 and 13, the moon is a close companion, but a difficult observation, as the slender waning moon is but a sliver in the morning twilight.

Jupiter is rapidly moving behind the sun, but before doing so, presents a tight grouping with Mercury and Venus early in August. Ve-

nus may be a tough catch, but is a somewhat possible observation. Don’t forget Jupiter’s apparent movement behind the sun is caused by us here on Earth doing the rapid orbital movement — about 12 times faster than Jupiter’s orbit.

Saturn rises in the east shortly after dusk, well placed for viewing throughout the whole summer.

Watch for the first quarter moon nearby Aug. 21 and 22.

Uranus rises in the east around midnight, crossing the sky all night, displaying retrograde motion (remember, it’s us doing the fast-paced orbit). Watch for the moon close by Aug. 5 and 31.

Neptune rises about two hours before Uranus, crossing the sky throughout the evening, also in retrograde motion. The moon slides by the greenish planet Aug. 29.

Strawberries without air miles

By Sara Williams There is no comparison between the taste of fresh strawberries from your own garden and those that have earned air miles en route from California or Mexico.

Especially now as the local season started a few weeks ago and runs until September. And growing your own is not difficult.

Begin with the site – full sun with shelter from the wind. Avoid low-lying areas that are susceptible to frost damage. Strawberries do best in a well-drained soil that has been cultivated to 10-12 inches and then generously amended with organic matter such as compost or well rotted manure.

Plant them in mid-spring, being careful not to allow the young plants (especially their roots) to dry out. Place them 12 inches apart within the row with the rows three feet apart. The mid-point of the crown should be level with the soil surface. Do not cover the crown with soil.

Gently firm the soil around the roots and water thoroughly to the depth of the root system and beyond.

Mulch with a few inches of clean straw beneath the foliage and extending about eight to 10 inches on either side of the plants. Do not cover the crown with mulch.

The straw mulch will reduce weeds, maintain soil moisture and keep the foliage and fruit clean. As well, it will prevent the splash of soil borne disease organisms, such as grey mould (Botrytis), onto the fruit.

Control weeds between rows with either additional mulch or the business end of a hoe. Apply one inch of water weekly, more if extremely hot or windy. Once established, side-dress the rows with a fertilizer such as 16-20-0 applied according to label directions.

Ripe and ready strawberries are completely red. No further ripening will occur once they are off the plant.

Fruit is best picked in the early morning while it is still cool. Leave the “cap” and stem on the berry. Avoid harvesting after a rain or irrigation. Wet fruit deteriorates more quickly. If disease is present, you’ll be spreading it as you move from plant to plant. Refrigerate the berries as soon as possible.

Smoke and fires The dry conditions in many regions in Canada have resulted in a higher incidence of forest fires. For those of us not in the fire areas themselves, we have been seeing the signs with smoky conditions for extended periods of time.

Fire ecology is the processes linking fire in an ecosystem as well as the ecological effects of the fire. It is important that even though fire is devastating, that same fire is a necessary contributor to habitat vitality and renewal. Many plant species in a naturally fireaffected environment require fire to germinate, establish or to reproduce. Fire is the mechanism by which the forest is regenerated. The fire consumes dead and decaying vegetation that accumulates on the forest floor, clearing the way to new growth. Therefore fire is an integral component in the function and biodiversity of natural habitats.

The response of trees and shrubs to fire varies significantly between and within species. These effects are also tempered by what has been happening in the ecosystem both before and after the fire. It is considered to be reasonable that temperatures of around 60 C are lethal to kill shoot tissues in most cases. This is dependent on the amount of heat received as well as the duration of exposure and the moisture content of bark, leaves and twigs.

Generally early in the growing season, during active leaf formation, there is a higher level of moisture present within the plant that decreases over the growing season and will continue to decline during dormancy. Therefore it would take a greater amount of heat to ignite a fire in spring and early summer than later in the growing season. However, if a fire hits an ecosystem in the spring and early summer, the plant material has used the majority of their energy reserves so there may be inadequate energy reserves to promote new growth.

If fire strikes just following dormancy, it is more likely (depending on the fire damage) for plant materials to sprout the following spring.

How a fire impacts the stem of a shrub is dependent on the protective quality of bark, thickness, composition and moisture content that have an influence on the ability of the bark tissue to absorb and transmit heat. Depending on the severity of the fire, it can also cause root mortality.

During intense fires, tree and shrub mortality may be instantaneous. This affects the ecosystem by opening entire areas to new growth and rejuvenation. For example germination adaptations include hard-coated seeds and serotinous cones that lie dormant until a fire passes. Under less severe fire situations, death may not occur or be delayed several years. Post-fire sprouting for trees, forbs and grasses are dependent on a number of factors including the severity of the fire, the interval between fires, weather conditions, land use, seasonality and more.

In saying all of this, please be careful when you are outdoors with cooking and recreational fires. Ensure when you leave the fire it is truly extinguished.

on their own. To prevent the row from becoming a solid mat, remove older plants, mother plants at the end of the season.

Winter protection is needed where snow protection is not dependable. Cover the plants with four to six inches of weed-free straw once temperatures drop to -5 C for several nights running and before -7 C hits. Remove mulch in early spring once danger of frost is past or the plants begin to actively grow.

Whereas your grandparents had limited choices, three types of strawberries are now commonly grown on the prairies — Junebearing, everbearing and day-neutral.

June-bearing varieties produce a single crop each year during a three- to fourweek period in late June and July. Once fruiting is complete, the plant sends out runners that produce additional plants.

Everbearing cultivars generally fruit twice a year, from late June to early July and again in late August.

The fruit is generally softer and less abundant than Junebearers or day-neutrals.

Day-neutral cultivars do not depend on day length to produce flower buds, therefore, they produce fruit throughout the growing season. Production is generally heaviest June and then in August and September.

Their total production is greater than the other two types. And they generally produce a good crop their first year.

Performers draw crowds to downtown NB

The second annual North Battleford International Street Performer Festival wrapped up Sunday afternoon with a brief performance from all the entertainers.

The weekend consisted of multiple performances from each over the three days, as well as face painting, balloon animals, food trucks and beautiful weather.

The performers, from as far away as Australia, were at the last location of their most recent tour after beginning in Edmonton.

“We started in Edmonton and this was the last stop on the tour. I’m going to head home for a while now before coming back in August for some festivals in Ontario,” said Alakazam, who excited, and possibly disturbed, the crowd with his doublejointed body and tricks that included juggling knives while standing on a 12-foot pole.

Alakazam, who hails from Sydney, Australia, began doing street performances in 1996 for one specific reason.

“For no other reason than it’s fun,” he explained.

“I grew up really interested in the circus, so I started practising juggling and unicycling and hit the streets when I was about 17. Then it just turned into my job.”

Despite his tricks seeming unbelievable to the crowd, it’s just another day at the office for him.

“Everything I do in my show has been practised tirelessly, but if it’s in my show I generally don’t have to practise anymore because I do it all the time.”

Even while standing on a 12-foot pole, juggling three knives with a tennis racquet in his mouth, which has four blades attached to the top, rotating like a helicopter blade, Alakazam’s heart rate doesn’t raise one bit.

“It all depends. If it’s a

really windy day it might be a little bit nerve-wracking, but I’m usually quite comfortable,” he explained.

He had a few astute observations about North Battleford, as well.

“There’s lots of sky here and lots of crazy rain storms,” he laughed. “The people are great, they were very responsive and receptive to the festival and that’s all that counts, really.”

Panic, has been doing street performances for even longer than Alakazam.

“Pretty much my whole adult life I’ve been doing this,” he said. “I’m 48 now and I started before I was 20. But I consider it a blessing to be able to do this because it’s a fun thing, it’s what I wanted to do and if you can get rewarded for what you want to do, you’re ahead of the game.”

Coming from the big city

of Boston, Mass., a small town like North Battleford offers unique things to see for Peter.

“It’s a fun town, I noticed there is a tremendous market for used saddles,” he said. “I saw a saddle going for $800.

I don’t see those for sale in Boston, there’s not much of a trade in horses and saddles down there.”

Other performers included Lea McGowan, a ballet dancer from New York

City, and Rythym Speaks, a dance quartet from Las Vegas, who got the crowd excited with their incredible co-ordination and standing backflips.

It was truly a family event in downtown North Battleford over the weekend. Kids could enjoy cotton candy and watch a man juggle while riding a unicycle and parents enjoyed the jokes their kids might not understand yet.

“Why does the sun look so bright?” Answer that question – “because it’s close to us” – and you may simply get another “why”! And responding, “Because God made it that way” won’t get you off the hook. Again, “Why?” Such questions arise from the curious minds of the young. But when older children or teens ask it, it can often be a challenge to parental authority. “Why can’t I go to the party?” Or, “Why can’t I get a tattoo?”

Sometimes parents retreat behind the all purpose “Because I said so.” But the underlying issues likely deserve a fuller and more helpful answer than that.

The “why” question appears in our English Bibles over 400 times. Sometimes the Lord Himself asks it, in order to help us understand the root of our own actions and decisions. That’s the

case with Scripture’s first “why,” when God confronts Cain. His brother Abel’s offering had been received by the Lord, but Cain was enraged when his had been rejected. “Why are you angry?” asks the Lord. “If you do well, will you not be accepted?” (Gen. 4:6, 7) Refusing to examine the evil in his own heart, and seething with fury, Cain killed his brother. The Apostle John later comments, in almost the last use of our word in the Bible, “And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.” (I Jn. 3:12)

Quite a few times, the question is raised with regard to the death of Christ.

The demand of the Jews that He be crucified puzzled Pilate. “‘Why [he asked]?’

What evil has He done?”

But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!” (Mk. 15:13-14) “Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, ‘I find no fault in this Man.’” (Lk. 23:4) But in spite of this conclusion, for fear of a mob uprising, the morally weak governor ordered Christ’s death anyway.

The question still needs to be answered. The immediate motive was jealousy on the part of the Jewish leadership, and resentment at Jesus’ growing popularity. But in the sovereign purposes of God, the reason was quite different. The sinless Son of God died as our Substitute, under the wrath of God, to pay the penalty for our sin.

The Lord Jesus Himself declared, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His

life a ransom for many.”

(Matt. 20:28) “[He] Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree … For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” (I Pet. 2:24; 3:18) Born in Scotland in 1925, John McFarlane Moore put his faith in Christ at the age of 16. He went on to serve as the assistant superintendent of the Seamen’s Chapel in Glasgow and as a pastor.

He later came to Canada,

and became the pastor of a church in Willowdale, Ont. Moore also wrote more than 150 hymns, including the popular Burdens Are Lifted at Calvary.

In 1953, he published words and music for one simply entitled Why? It addresses the question regarding the purpose of Christ’s death this way.

“Why did they nail Him to Calvary’s tree? / Why? Tell me, why was He there? / Jesus the Helper, the Healer, the Friend– / Why? Tell me,

why was He there?”

Echoing the words of the prophet Isaiah, centuries before (Isa. 53:6), Moore answers the question: “All my iniquities on Him were laid– / He nailed them all to the tree. / Jesus the debt of my sin fully paid– / He paid the ransom for me.” It will be the eternal song of the saints, in heaven: “You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.” (Rev. 5:9)

Some things we plan for Looking back over the past week I can honestly say that I don’t recall ever taking a holiday that so met and exceeded my expectations. Returning home, however, was quite another story, one I would never have chosen.

Looking ahead, in two days our entire regional district will be without power from morning until evening. Current and anticipated growth have made it necessary for our power supply company to upgrade the system. It’s an event that’s well worth the inconvenience and I’m already making preparations.

Last week’s trip back home was another story given that what should have been a four-hour flight, including stopovers, turned

into a 48 hour blur. First it was the delay caused by an abnormally high number of passengers requiring wheelchairs. That was followed by a mechanical problem with the co-pilot’s chair. As if that wasn’t enough, the flight on which that broken part was being transported was interrupted by an unruly passenger, a return to the home airport and intervention by the police. On and on it went, the flight, now hours late,

meant I missed another airline connection meaning I had to spend the night at a hotel, had to be re-routed to a different city and then had to rush to make ferry connections. Needless to say, it was so good to be home.

Although this was a minor incident compared to so many other things, I have been reminded of the fragility of life and especially of our plans. What may have seemed simple becomes complex, what was to have been refreshing ends up draining us of joy.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

conditions. It’s so dry, the dogs are marking their territory with chalk. Even the fish are getting ticks.

What a year. First the oil patch tanks, and now agriculture, our mainstay industry, is dealing with drought conditions that will have a huge effect on harvest results in many different ways.

I’ve been living in the Battlefords since 1990 and I can’t recall, considering the lack of rain combined with relentless and intense heat, a time when these conditions prevailed for this length of time. There were a few years that came close.

When I worked for the City of North Battleford, we had a one-ton truck with a water tank on it for watering our planted trees all the time in regular years. In droughty years, we put water tanks in the three-ton trucks and had up to three units watering trees in parks and on boulevards just to keep things alive. In the bigger cities, they actually contract with companies to water trees and landscapes to protect their investment.

Supplemental watering is the only way to keep trees from succumbing to these brutal conditions. It’s worth it; a city without trees isn’t fit for a dog.

Water is vital to all plants, trees included. Big trees can pull hundreds of litres of water from the soil in a day, but up to 95 per cent of that can be given off as transpiration into the air. Prolonged drought and dry soil conditions interfere with the tree’s ability to take up essential nutrients. Without the nutrients, the rate of photosynthesis – tree food production – goes down and the tree’s health goes into decline.

Every tree and shrub, whether it is in the backyard landscape or in nature, has different water requirements and therefore different tolerances to extreme drought conditions. Plant size, air temperature, humidity and wind all affect the moisture available to a plant.

There are little water valves in the leaves of green plants called stomatal openings. These openings naturally adjust for the environmental conditions and actually control transpiration rates. It’s a preservation thing. When a plant is experiencing dry conditions, these openings close down to conserve the moisture within. When a plant gives off more water than it can draw from the soil, it wilts.

Under drought conditions, many trees will show wilt by the afternoon on a hot day, but if the leaves are not turgid, i.e., fully hydrated, not wilted, by morning, you have a tree that is in a serious moisture-stressed condition.

Other natural responses to prolonged droughty conditions can include not only wilt but early leaf drop, the shedding of fruit and twig die-back. Severe drought, which I believe we are on the cusp of, can cause root loss, total leaf drop and tree death. First, the tree goes into a water conservation mode; next it goes into a self-preservation mode and begins to rid itself of tree parts it can’t sustain given the environmental conditions.

The first trees to be affected will be quick growing trees such as some of the hybrid poplars as well as trees that are newly planted, as in the past five or so years, that do not have a fully developed root system yet.

The only answer is supplemental watering. Lots of it. It will be all but impossible to drown a tree in these conditions.

It is so dry right now that they just closed two lanes of the pool and the Battle River is only running twice a week. Water your trees.

Hopefully by the time you are reading this absolutely riveting article, the rains have come and brought relief to the crops and landscapes and that damage to plants of all kinds is minimal and can be reversed.
