ing the country for a cause.

That was evident again Wednesday, as local WA WA Shriners in the Battlefords welcomed the national Exceptional Care Odyssey to

the community.

It is a 17,000 kilometre journey across Canada of a red Ford Explorer decorated to resemble a Shriners’ Fez. The vehicle is on a 66-

One woman dead Staff A passenger was killed when an SUV was struck at the intersection of Highway 303 and Highway 16 Friday afternoon.

Maidstone and Lloydminster RCMP responded at 12:33 p.m. Friday. Police say, an SUV was heading eastbound on Highway 16 and attempted to make a

day trip through 55 cities. It began May 16 in St. John’s, N.L. and culminates in midJuly with the dipping of the tires in the Pacific Ocean. The final stop is a wrap-up event in Vancouver July 18.

“We wanted to find a unique way to create awareness in each community about what Shriners do for the kids in each community,” said Emmanuelle Rondeau, communication manager for Shriners Hospital for Children Canada.

Wednesday saw the vehicle arrive at the Masonic Temple in North Battleford.

In addition to local Shriners, Mayor Ian Hamilton of North Battleford and Mayor Derek Mahon of Battleford were on hand, as was Battlefords MLA Herb Cox. At every stop, signed stickers are placed on the vehicle by local supporters.

People have been leaving “messages of hope” on the

car, said Rondeau, to create awareness.

The tour then continued on to Lloydminster for the evening, and then on to Alberta and British Columbia.

The goal of the journey is to bring awareness of the new Canadian Shriners Hospital being built on the ground of the McGill Health Centre in Montreal.

Its staff treat conditions such as rheumatology, brittle bone diseases, spinal and limb abnormalities and many others. The new hospital will be double the size of the current one and offer services to even more children across the country.

Additional services at the new hospital include a surgical skills lab, a movement analysis lab and an education centre.

While there is a capitalbuilding campaign going on, the tour is less about raising money and more about get-

ting information out about the hospital.

“Really, this is an awareness-building exercise for us,” said Rondeau. This was a way to bring awareness and thanks to individual Shriners across the country who, she notes, often work in the background and in an unassuming way.

Plus, many don’t know there is specialized orthopedic care available for children, she said, so they wanted people to know that option was available.

All care and treatments up to age 18 are provided regardless of the family’s ability to pay, through the Shriners’ efforts. Shriners pay for the transportation of the kids to the Montreal hospital.

Reorganization being phased in at City Hall

There is a reorganization of responsibilities coming at North Battleford City Hall.

Some departments are being combined while other existing departments are seeing their responsibilities split up, as part of an effort to provide better service delivery to residents.

The reorganization, which will be rolled out slowly over the next few years, follows the hiring of Jim Puffalt as city manager earlier this year.

A customer service review was completed, and as a result a number of changes have been made.

Monday, Puffalt unveiled the new organizational chart of city administration, which sees some changes from the way things were under former city manager Jim Toye.

Under the old chart, the city manager reported directly to Mayor Ian Hamilton and city council. Underneath the city manager were directors of Finance, Public Works and Engineering, Parks and Recreation Culture and Heritage, Business Development, and Human Resources, among others.

Under the new organizational chart, seven new departments will report to the City Manager.

The most significant change will see a department of operations and maintenance created, to be led by the current Public Works and Engineering Director Stewart Schafer.

That department would

be responsible for the existing public works functions including roads, water and sewer maintenance and treatment, central mechanics and solid waste management and the airport. The major addition is the inclusion of the existing Parks and Recreation Department responsibilities for parks and the cemetery, sports fields maintenance, boulevards and the like.

Parks and Recreation is essentially being split in two.

While parks functions now fall under Operations and Maintenance, the responsibilities for major recreation facilities will now be under a new heading called Leisure Services.

The plan is for existing Parks and Recreation Director Bill Samborski to lead

that new department, which will be responsible for the CUplex, the Civic Centre and Don Ross Centre, galleries, central building maintenance and programming and central booking.

A third new department is Planning/Development Service. That combines under one roof the existing city planning department (Tim LaFreniere), building officials, engineering department (which previously was part of Public Works and Engineering) and the existing economic development function.

Financial services, to be headed by David Gillan, will be responsible for all financial planning as well as taxes, utilities, payroll and payables, informational

technology and cashiers.

The current functions of the city clerk fall under the heading “Legislative Services,” with that department responsible for records and bylaws and council agendas.

It also includes central reception services and secretarial services that will see a number of changes implemented to those operations as well.

Largely unchanged is the Human Resources Services function responsible for central recruitment, retention, hiring, reference checks, discipline and safety. Also largely unchanged is fire and rescue and bylaw enforcement services, which now come under the general heading of Protective Services.

Targeted police initiatives funding continues

The Province of Saskatchewan has announced it is continuing to fund targeted police initiatives for North Battleford.

An announcement was made Thursday of an allocation of $770,000 for 201415, an increase of $35,000 from a year earlier.

The annual funding goes towards seven additional RCMP officers in North Battleford, who were hired in recent years. The municipal grants have been increased by $5,000 per officer to offset increasing costs.

“Crime prevention and suppression is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan,” Battlefords MLA Herb Cox said on behalf of Corrections and Policing

Minister Christine Tell.

“This funding provides the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with the capacity that strengthens its ability to respond to the needs of the community and reduce crime and victimization.”

In the news release issued by the province, Mayor Ian Hamilton was quoted as welcoming the continuation of the province’s assistance.

“We are grateful for the

confirmation of continued funding for targeted police initiatives,” Hamilton said.

“The city considers crime reduction and prevention a provincial and municipal responsibility and strategies have been presented that could further strengthen the partnership between the province and our city to address regional policing demands that impact our community.”

Council notes

Alley repairs needed: Councillor Lightfoot Staff Here are some of the other highlights from the June 23 council meeting in North Battleford. Thanks to Communications Manager Mike Halstead for much of this information.

Councillor Greg Lightfoot inquired about back alleys and concerns about recent maintenance. City Manager Jim Puffalt responded that weather permitting, city crews are attempting to reclaim and realign the alleys, which became “misshapen” over time from when the dumpsters were in place.

Mayor Ian Hamilton congratulated everyone involved in Aboriginal Day celebrations downtown Monday.

Councillor Ryan Bater asked what improvements are happening to the traffic signals at 100th Street and Territorial Drive.

Engineering co-ordinator Dan Maloney said the new poles installed this week will have east and west left-hand turn signals that will alleviate traffic backup. A camera system that will measure traffic flow is also being installed.

Councillor Cathy Richardson congratulated all local students and

teachers on the school year currently wrapping up and also reminded residents to be mindful that there will be many children out and about on their bikes now that school is out.

New rates at the Nations -WEST Field House will come into effect Sept. 1.

Introductory rates will no longer be in effect.

New rates to be phased in over two years, are competitive, and by no means are the highest among cities of this size. Details are to be advertised over the coming weeks.

As well, a compost program is being developed

as a subscription service with Loraas Environmental Services Ltd. Interested residents can contact Loraas to find out the costs and the pickup schedule.

Loraas Environmental Services stated in correspondence, it has retrieved over 96 per cent of the 446 carts that were out on a subscription prior to the City introducing the curbside garbage and recycling program. The company has issued $8,104.33 in refunds.

The next meeting of council is Monday, July 21 at 8 p.m. as council goes on its summer schedule (one meeting a month.)

Puffalt told reporters residents will notice changes right away with respect to the customer service end of things such as how calls are handled and how people are directed through City Hall.

“I think people will see customer-service wise that there will be some changes at City Hall as to how we provide central reception services. So that’s a major change that’s happening right away. Some of the changes at Leisure Services are starting to happen — the central booking and that kind of thing.”

Other changes will come more gradually, such as combining Public Works and the Parks and Recreation department.

“Putting Parks and Public Works together is a big issue that we need to take slowly and work with people and make sure we’re headed in the right direction,” said Puffalt.

One notable change has already been in place for a few months. Mike Halstead had previously served as marketing and communications co-ordinator reporting to the director of business development. But as of March, Halstead has been reporting directly to the city manager with the title communications manager.

Is there a new definition of ‘senior citizen’

Who qualifies as a senior citizen? The magic age used to be 55. That’s when the seniors’ clubs would like you to buy a membership and pull a chair up to the card table. That used to be when retail outlets would offer you a discount on your purchases, or lure you into their store with senior “discount” days.

As the bulge of the Boomers moves into and past 55, the “officially old” scale seems to be sliding upward, and the senior perks dwindling away.

Most restaurants still offer senior menus and in North Battleford, Humpty’s offers a senior discount at age 55.

Smitty’s has a program for those 60 and over, but the North Battleford location does not participate.

So with 55 no longer the magic number, are those in that age bracket truly seniors?

Fact is most 55-year-olds are still immersed in their careers and businesses. Even teachers, who seem to retire at a younger age than most, take a quick breather and hop right back into the work world doing something else.

The Government of Canada is getting into the business or redefining “officially old” by tinkering with age of eligibility for the Old Age Security program. OAS differs from the Canadian Pension Plan in that it is funded from general revenues and does not have a contribution component.

Starting in April 2023 the age of eligibility for OAS will gradually increase from 65 to 67 for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement and from 60 to 62 for the allowance for the survivor. These changes will be fully implemented by 2029.

People currently receiving the OAS pension and benefits and those born before April 1, 1958 will not be affected by these changes. If you were born in 1957 or earlier, you will be eligible for the OAS pension and possibly the GIS at the age of 65.

If you were born in 1963 or later, you will be eligible for OAS and GIS at the age of 67.

Given some startling statistics quoted recently in an article offering tips for working Baby Boomers, the government is probably prudent in trying to shoo a few away from the trough for a couple of more years.

According to the article the number of Americans 55 years and older will almost double between now and 2030.

It also states American life expectancy is at an all-time high and death rates at an all-time low. The article suggests these factors add up to retirees outliving their retirement savings.

But moving the marker for “officially old” doesn’t really help define who is actually a senior. Do pronouncements of “50 is the new 40” or “60 is the new 50” actually illustrate the Boomers as more robust than previous generations as they age, or that they simply drastically outnumber the young people around them, so don’t look all that old to one another?

And since the retail world seems to be pulling back from enticing seniors to part with their money, is there really any benefit in admitting to being one?

Drivers could use a refresher course Dear Editor Enough is enough! This is my reaction to the quality of driving that has been evolving in the Battlefords. I am becoming extremely disgusted with the way people are driving. Many times I have been cut off at intersections.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m no perfect driver. But I do try to follow the rules of the road. But when it gets to the point when people do not stop at a stop sign, or proceed without caution at a yield sign, I become aggravated.

In many instances, I approach an intersection, where I have the right of way, and someone proceeds at the last second, and cuts me off. In a case like this, I have no choice but to act defensively, because sometimes, there is not a lot of time to brake.

There was an instance when I was driving up a residential street approaching an intersection. A driver went through a yield without stopping. So, as most people would do, I honked at the person. And without enough time to stop, I was forced to pass the person to avoid a serious incident. It was bad enough the person didn’t stop, but the driver had the audacity to honk at me. Continuously!

And this type of situation has happened many times.

I’m beginning to believe the quality of driving in the Battlefords, has deteriorated to Lloydminster levels. And I can assure that none of you would appreciate that.

Are we in such a hurry we need to make stupid decisions? There is no need for this nonsense. We need to show a better example for new drivers.

Another example I have, when it comes to driving,

is the way some people park. Where did you all learn to park? From the “I don’t give a damn” school of driving?

I’m pretty sure our instructors do not teach us to park in a way that would inconvenience other people.

My wife was running a few errands in town. As she returned to her vehicle she noticed that there was no way to move the vehicle. Two inconsiderate people parked their cars on either side of her in a manner that made it impossible for her to move her vehicle. Fortunately for her, one of the drivers was leaving shortly after she climbed into her vehicle.

On another day, she had arrived at the store she was going to. This time, she was parking her vehicle, and, for a lack of a better term, this idiot thought it was a great idea to park crossways across two handicap parking stalls and she was trying to park in the stall next to the handicap stalls, but was unable to, because part of his truck was blocking access to the stall. So, without hesitation, she honked. He, of course, moved. How dumb do you have to be to do something as inconsiderate as that?

There have been many instances of the lack of consideration in the Battlefords. The driving is getting worse, and the parking is atrocious. So please, have a little consideration, and if possible, a heart, and let’s try to improve the quality of our driving. There’s no need to be as idiotic as drivers from Lloydminster. Let’s all try to make a better example for our youth.

O.J. Simpson case really was the trial of the century Twenty years ago around this time, a seminal moment in American history took place.

That moment, of course, was the O.J. Simpson murder case.

Yes, I know, you are shaking your head at that statement. But there is no doubt that case, with Simpson accused of stabbing to death his exwife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman at Brentwood, held audiences spellbound for the whole time it went on, right up until that day on October 3, 1995 when O.J. was acquitted.

The early days of the investigation saw the ultimate “where were you” moment of all time: that evening on June 17, 1994 when O.J. Simpson was inside the white Ford Bronco trailed by police vehicles in a chase on the freeways of Los Angeles.

I remember where I was.

I was at home, hoping to tune into an NBA finals game between Houston and New York, when all this mayhem erupted.

It was impossible to take my eyes off this situation.

People in Los Angeles stopped on the freeway overpasses to wave and

cheer as the Ford Bronco made its way. Adding to the drama was the real possibility of O.J. killing himself, live.

What those of high school age probably don’t realize is how shocking this was to people at the time.

An entire generation has grown up thinking of O.J. as a shady character, a thug.

But that was not his image in 1994.

O.J. was a major celebrity. He had made the Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielsen, appeared in commercials running through airports for Hertz and did commentary on Monday Night Football.

All this was on top of his storied football career, setting a single-season rushing record with the NFL Buffalo Bills.

The guy was a hero, so these events came as a rude shock.

The “Trial of the Century” that followed proved a long and entertaining spectacle.

From the get go, almost every moment of the case was shown on TV, from the arraignment — with O.J.’s famous “absolutely 100 per cent not guilty” plea — through the preliminary hearings and the trial itself.

newsoptimist.john@sasktel.net Since we didn’t have access to Court TV, we relied on CNN. Every day, Jim Moret would host live coverage of the activities in Judge Lance Ito’s courtroom in Los Angeles.

Whenever the trial was in recess, Moret would host legal commentators Greta Van Susteren and Roger Cossack, dissecting what was going on. This trial made them famous, and Greta now hosts a show on Fox News Channel every night.

It wasn’t just CNN covering the trial. There was so much interest the media centre outside the courthouse was dubbed “Camp O.J.” because so many reporters were there full time. And there were endless books written about the trial.

Many criticized the coverage as tabloid sensationalism. This included

media people who seemed to think reporting the case was beneath them.

I think the real reason these “media critics” were so ticked off was the fact people were actually into this trial. People were tuning in.

In court, defence lawyer Johnnie Cochran and the “Dream Team” faced off KEN against Marcia Clark and NOSKYE the prosecution. O.J.’s Columnist lawyers included Robert Shapiro, F. Lee Bailey, Barry Scheck and others.

Along for the ride in court was O.J.’s friend, lawyer Robert Kardashian. That’s right, Kardashian, now known for his even more (in)famous daughters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney.

The reality was that if you stepped away from the “tabloid” elements and the amusing sideshows like hilarious “houseguest” Kato Kaelin who was on

the stand, the fact was there was a larger race relations issue wrapped up in what was going on.

The case highlighted racial tensions going on in Los Angeles.

The city had just come off the infamous beating of Rodney King by police that was caught on video, followed by acquittals of all the officers that sparked outrage in the form of the Los Angeles Riots.

Now, there was another black man, O.J. Simpson, in trouble with the LAPD. You could cut the racial tension with a knife. Distrust of the LAPD among the AfricanAmerican community in Los Angelese could not have been higher.

The defence team made a big stink about the LAPD rushing to judgement. They accused investigator Mark Fuhrman, notorious for making racist statements about African-Americans that were caught on tape, of planting evidence. Whether Fuhrman did or not, nevertheless he was made to look really bad on the stand.

I am convinced prosecutors botched the case. As far as I was concerned, all the DNA evidence pointed to O.J., but all kinds of things happened at trial with the

defence making the LAPD and lab people look incompetent.

The climax came when prosecutor Christopher Darden had O.J. try on the glove found at the scene.

Note to prosecutors: before you have the accused try on any evidence, make sure it fits first! Otherwise you’ll have defence lawyers telling the jury “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” in their closing.

People say the O.J. trial set the stage for coverage of other cases we’ve seen in recent years. Yet the truth is it had a chilling effect on televising trials for a long time.

When the Goldman family later sued Simpson for civil responsibility in the death of Ron Goldman, the trial judge kicked the cameras out. When Michael Jackson went to trial on sex charges years later, cameras were kicked out, too.

The media circus is not yet forgotten.

Nowadays, O.J. is in prison in Nevada for an armed robbery conviction involving sports memorabilia. Recently, he was trying to get that conviction thrown out on appeal.

As if that’s what we need: another O.J. trial.

Rotary President’s Windup

Each year the Rotary Club of the Battlefords identifies a citizen of the Battlefords who exemplifies the qualities of being a person of moral integrity. This year this prestigious award was presented to Diane Gryba. The criteria include the requirements that the recipient is known to be of upstanding character who has never been deceitful and whose word is their bond.

The Rotary Club of the Battlefords recognized the contributions to the club by a past president, Lee Ulmer. The recognition includes the payment of $1,000 US by the Rotary Club to the Rotary Foundation that resulted in Ulmer being appointed as a Paul Harris Fellow. Paul Harris is the individual who founded Rotary in Chicago in 1905. To be named a Paul Harris Fellow is the highest recognition that can be afforded to a member of the Rotary Club of the Battlefords by the Club.

Outgoing president of the Rotary Club of the Battlefords, Warren Williams, presented incoming president, John Jangula, with the club charter. Jangula took over leadership of the Rotary Club on July 1 and will be its president until June 30, 2015.

2 cups rhubarb, washed, sliced 1 cup crushed pineapple, drained 1/2 cup coconut

at 350 F. non-greased 9 x 13-inch pan. Bake 12 minutes Mix flour, butter and icing sugar. Press into 1/2 cup flour, to which baking powder has been added. Add Beat eggs, add sugar, beating until frothy. Addtop of baked crust. Spread pineapple evenly on top, and then vanilla and rhubarb. Mix together. Spread on res when cool. The taste may prompt you to double the batch coconut. Bake for 25 minutes. Cut into squa the second time. It freezes well, too.

Venus, Mercury and the moon form a nice trio July 24 July’s moon begins a few days past new phase, so presents a thin curve in the western evening sky at sundown. July 5, just past first quarter, Mars is less than one degree away, an occultation in the Southern Hemisphere. A couple of days later, Saturn is occulted in the South Pacific, and for us the Ringed Planet is about half a degree away. The moon is full July 12. By July 22, Aldebaran, the bright star in Taurus, is less than two degrees away; Venus is a few degrees north July 24; likewise for Mercury July 25.

After the first few days in July, Mercury is visible in the eastern morning sky just before sunrise, reaching its highest point July 12. Venus and Mercury share the spotlight for a few days from July 12 to 20, only seven degrees apart, then Mercury pulls away as it descends behind the sun (superior conjunction).

Venus, Mercury, and the moon form a nice trio in the eastern morning sky July 24. You have to be up early to see it, though, as sunrise is around 5 a.m. The moon will just be a thin crescent and will disappear quickly in the sun’s glare.

Saturn closely follows Mars across the sky during all of July, rising and setting a little later. As the month progresses, Saturn closes in July Red Planet. July 7 will see a close encounter of Saturn with the moon; an occultation in the Southern Hemisphere. Saturn has been retrograding for the past couple of months, and it begins proper motion July 21.

Uranus rises in the east about 1 a.m. and is visible with optical aid until just before sunrise around 4:30.

Neptune rises, like Uranus, around midnight and is only visible with a telescope until just before sunrise.

BRDL Rolls Out Double Header

The Battlefords Roller Derby League hosted a double header Saturday night at the Civic Centre. In the first bout, the rookie Lunachicks in green matched up against the Angels of Assault in pink. The hometown Lunachicks kept the bout close in the first period, but the Angels of Assault pulled away in the second. The visiting squad came away with a 261-185 victory. In the second bout, the host Rubby Rollers in black took on the Killa Bees in yellow. It was a tight first period, with the Rubby Rollers taking a 24-point lead into the break. Near the end of the second, the Killa Bees took advantage of two penalties to the Rubby Rollers jammers — who are the skaters that score the points — to take the lead. Beavers double up Cardinals in final home game of season

Beavers pitcher Dave Millar had another strong outing as North Battleford downed the Unity Cardinals 4-2 Friday night at Beaver Lions Stadium.

It was the final home game of the regular season for the Beavers.

Millar pitched a complete game four-hitter to earn the win for North Battleford.

Unity pitcher Ben Gieni went five innings, striking out six batters and giving up

two runs. He picked up a no decision for his efforts. Relief pitcher Tyler McKee pitched the sixth inning and gave up two runs to get saddled with the loss.

The Beavers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Left-fielder Ryan Shepherd reached first base after the throw from Unity shortstop Francis Kiefer pulled the first baseman off the bag. Second-baseman Brennan Lampitt drew a walk and first-baseman Rory Gregoire was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Designated Hitter Blair Geering hit a sac-

rifice fly to right field to cash Shepherd in from third. Ryan Muyers grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Millar cruised through the first two innings for the Beavers, sitting down the first six Unity batters in order.

In the top of the third, Cory Wildeman was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. Millar got out of the jam by getting Scott Greenwald to fly out to Kyle Gregoire in centre field.

Ben Gieni settled down after a rough first inning, retiring the next six batters.

Riders get tougher test from elements than from Tiger‐Cats Sunday is a day the Rider Nation won’t soon forget.

Amidst one of the worst summer storms in recent memory, the Saskatchewan Roughriders kicked off the 2014 CFL season in fine style by blowing out the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 31-10 at Mosaic Stadium.

A few hours before game time, one had to wonder if the game would be played at all. Regina was being hammered by driving rains that flooded out the city and caused emergencies in nearby communities.

But the show must go on and the new-look Riders certainly did put on a show. The green defensive front sacked Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros an astounding 10 times, while rookie running back Anthony Allen rushed for a whopping 156 yards with a touchdown on the ground and in the air in his CFL debut.

There were whispers throughout the Rider locker room through training camp

that this defence could be better than the one the Riders deployed in 2013 when they allowed a league-low in points. In Week 1, they did nothing to dispel the myth.

“That’s something we’ve been talking about amongst ourselves,” admitted rush end Ricky Foley, who contributed three sacks of his own.

“I wouldn’t want to discredit the guys who were here last year and departed, but we’re coming out of the gate with incredible chemistry. Last year, it was all new coaches and players.

But this year, we’re much more familiar with the system. It’s ‘organic,’ if that makes sense.”

The Riders had plenty of questions going into the brand new season, not the least of which was how would they replace recordsetting tailback Kory Sheets who fled to the NFL. Also with two new linebackers and a new defensive tackle, how would that front seven

fare?

Those questions were answered in spades and while it’s incredibly early, they received two thumbs up in their season debut.

“I thought they played with great effort and executed what we asked them to do,” said Rider coach Corey Chamblin.

“The new receivers had a great start. The elements played right to Anthony Allen and he got it done. There’s room for improvement, he missed a block on one play, but I thought he did a good job.”

There’s no question there has been a distinct lack of the electricity this team is

used to as we enter a brand new season. The team has played three straight home games already (albeit two in the preseason) and they’ve yet to draw a crowd over 20,000. The weather is the major culprit in that rainouts have caused pre-game practice field festivities to be cancelled for each and every game. The Rider Nation has been put to the test.

But Sunday’s showing should be enough to get

people catching that Rider Pride. It was an incredibly dominant showing by the green guys and, while the Ticats looked lost and completely at wits-end dealing with the monsoon, Saskatchewan looked like they were playing on a hot summer day.

The game itself was a Grey Cup rematch, but it was a hollow shadow of last November’s CFL title game in which the Riders spanked the Ticats 4523. While the dominance was the same, the hype was minimal. Heck, no one even brought up the fact Hamilton coach Kent Austin’s image adorns the west side of our stadium on a sevenstorey banner.

“I didn’t get a ring for this win,” Chamblin chuckled. “It didn’t feel like

Rory Gregoire reached first base after McKee, who was playing centre field at the time, dropped a fly ball. After Geering bunted Gregoire over to second base, Muyers hit an infield single to put two runners on. Brad Eischon then drove the second pitch of the at bat into left field to score Gregoire. Gieni then struck out Derrick Chapman and got Cadrin to pop up to the pitcher to end the inning.

The Beavers looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Lampitt singled and stole second base. Kyle Gregoire followed with a single to right field, allowing Lampitt to scamper to third. With runners on the corners, the Beavers attempted a double steal. Gregoire broke for second and Wildeman threw to Greenwald. Lampitt was slow getting off third base

and Wildeman’s throw beat the runner to home plate.

Rory Gregoire grounded out to second to end the frame.

Unity tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.

After Wildeman struck out to start the inning, Greenwald reached base with an infield single. Ben Gieni grounded a ball to shortstop, but it got through Cadrin to put runners on first and second.

Next up was Mark Ralson who popped a ball into left field. Neither Shepherd nor Chapman were able to get to it and the ball fell between the two. Because there was only one out, Wildeman and Gieni had to tag up, forcing the lead runner to hold at third base.

After McKee struck out, Kiefer doubled to the gap in right field, scoring Wildeman and Gieni to the delight of the Unity fans in attendance. Ralston was held at third. With runners on second and third, Cory Hoffman flied out to right field to end the threat.

With McKee replacing Gieni on the mound, the Beavers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Geering and Muyers drew walks to start the inning. Eischon laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.

Chapman cashed in both runners with a single up the middle of the infield that died in the grass just behind second base to put the Beavers up 4-2. McKee struck out Cadrin and Shepherd to end the sixth.

It was three up and three down in the top of the seventh for Millar. He got Graeme Gieni to ground out to the shortstop, struck out Tyler Gilbert and got Wildeman to pop up to the catcher to end the game.

With the win, the Beavers (4-6) have won four of their last six games to climb up to sixth in the NSRBL standings. They move to 1.5 games back of Unity (5-4) for fifth in the standings.

But it’s not about Hamilton. It’s about the 2014 Riders carving out their own identity and proving they’ll be a force to be reckoned with as they charge towards the Grey Cup in Vancouver five long months away.

So far, so good.

WOHLBERG: My name is Melanie and Laurine was my grandmother. It is an honour to write this in memory of her life. Laurine Wohlberg was born March 20, 1936 to Robert Arthur and Mary Poore in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan. Her family, including her brothers Glenn and Tony, and sister Marion, grew up on a farm near Belbutte, Saskatchewan. Laurine spent most of her childhood enjoying the outdoors, riding horses and helping out with the farming. In 1957 Laurine married Harry Wohlberg. Together they raised five children, Delbert, Gisele, Bonnie, Faron and Trevor on Mohler’s farm near Maymont, SK. Laurine stayed busy with her children, tending a big garden and staying active in the church. She made sure to include some fun in life by taking the family camping, fishing and tavelling to visit family. In 1971 the family moved into Maymont and Laurine worked various jobs including, a concession at Glenburn Park and a meals on wheels program in town. In 2001 Laurine moved from Maymont to the Tower in North Battleford. Even though she had slowed down a lot she still played cards, shuffleboard and continued travelling as much as she could with her children. Laurine passed away on June 14, 2014. A prayer service was held for her at St. Joseph Calasanctius Roman Catholic Church at 7:00 pm on June17, 2014 with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 am on June 18, 2014. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sallows & McDonald - Wilson & Zehner Funeral Home. All of her life Laurine faithfully attended mass and kept up with her daily prayers.

We will miss this strong, brave,and loving woman dearly. Iain was predeceased by his parents: Angus and Mary Weston; his brother, Roy Weston. Iain obtained his medical degree at Edinburgh University in Scotland, where he met Liz. They were married in March 1962 and arrived in North Battleford in May 1964, intending to stay two years, then go to Australia for two years and return to the UK to join his father in family practice in London. They never made it to Australia and Iain spent 35 years in family practice here in North Battleford, retiring on May 31st, 1999.

During that time he delivered more than 850 babies and gave more than 20,000 anaesthetics. Following retirement and with the onset of poor health which resulted in the loss of both legs, one of his happiest occupations was sitting in the Co-op Mall chatting with ex patients or selling tickets at the hospital for the Hospital Foundation where he often sold tickets to one of “his babies”. Family, friends and community were very important in his life. During years of membership in the Kinsmen Club and through his work he was able to serve the community and was honoured to be awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal in 2002 for such service. Many friends were made through the Kinsmen Club and through golffriends that have made North Battleford a wonderful place to live.

He was so proud of his children – Richard, Sarah and Cate. As the family grew, with sons-in-law and a daughter-in-law and six grandchildren, he enjoyed the role of family patriarch – always sad when they had to return home at the end of summer after their visits at his favorite place – the cottage at Meota. The support and kindness of friends, ex-patients, colleagues and others whose lives he touched has been overwhelming. Our thanks go out to you all – you have made a sad time more bearable, made us even more proud to have him as a husband, father and grandfather knowing that he was loved by so many. Liz, Richard, Sarah, Cate and all the family.

had the opportunity to perform on the radio. Everyone had a radio, but few had a TV and reception was poor quality at best. TV came to Saskatoon in 1954 and reliable television came years later.

The UCT shows became very popular and supported the cancer fund.

On most nights about 15 to 20 individuals or groups would perform in each community. Parents, relatives and friends would pledge money to their favourite group. The group who collected the most money during the show received a cash prize and the opportunity to perform in North Battleford at the armoury building at 702 – 102nd St. (Edward Street) at the “annual final.”

One of the annual finals of UCT CJNB Guest Night was thought to have occurred on June 2, 1959. CJNB started broadcasting on Jan. 28 1947, on channel 1240 and then changed to channel 1460 in 1951.

The $75 dollar first prize in 1959 was more than most people earned in a week.

The program from district points was carried over telephone company long

distance lines, in some locations with only one long distance line, long distance calling was postponed until after the amateur hour was completed. The announcer would call each group to the stage. Each performer would give their name, they would also be asked if they wanted to say hello to friends or relatives. One five-year-old girl said “I want to say hello to my brother Fred, where ever he is!” Eldon Elliott and Alex Johnson were two of the CJNB announcers who worked on these broadcasts.

UCT members who attended all shows were John Black, Charlie Matthews and Stan Rowlands. All communities were competitive. If Mary Jo raised

$22, Joe Blow raised $20 and Billie Beet raised $25, soon Joe’s family and friends would pledge more money, This was repeated numerous times. Most programs were in a community hall, and after a few visits to the community watering hole, money flowed freely to all contestants.

All contestants performed several times during the evening. UCT announcer would say, the program last week, had raised a couple of hundred dollars more. Soon it was not a competition between individual performers it was a competition between towns. Add a little alcohol and pledges increased.

Some of these shows lasted past 2 a.m. Thousands of dollars were raised for cancer which has affected most families. Many performers had their moment of fame, performing on CJNB radio.

By Lyndon Penner Many years ago, I took a class about edible flowers. I wanted to learn more about moving plants from the garden to the kitchen and it ended up being a really good time. There was a nice gal in my class named Fran and she said at one point, “I wonder if you could eat clematis blossoms. They would be so pretty in a salad.” At this, the instructor took on a horrified expression and said, “Nooo!!

That’s Ranunculaceae! You don’t eat anything — I mean, anything — in that entire family! Unless you’re interested in suffering and death!”

So Fran decided she wasn’t going to eat clematis blossoms after all.

The instructor’s words intrigued me. Some men like to drive fast cars, others collect guns or knives, and I like to grow things that can kill you. We all feel a need to live dangerously sometimes. I had never thought much about Ranunculaceae, better known to most as the buttercup family. To be sure, there were plenty of representatives in my garden but that was not something I had pursued consciously. It just so happened that I liked delphiniums and monkshood and prairie crocus; it never occurred to me that these well-known garden perennials were related or that they were violently poisonous.

erything in this large family of over 1,700 plant species is toxic to some degree.

This entire group of plants intrigues me. Every time I learned something about the buttercup family, I became more and more curious about them. Greek and Roman mythology has it that monkshood sprung from the slobber of Cerberus, the three-headed dog, guardian of the gates of the underworld. An extract of monkshood was once used to poison wolves (hence one of its other common names, wolf’s bane). It is also reportedly a component of witches’ brew. Larkspur seed extract was used to kill body lice during the American Civil War. And most First Nations cultures have at least one story about the prairie crocus, my favourite, which involves a young man giving the crocus his coat. Ever since, the prairie crocus has worn a covering of rabbit fur. This makes me appreciate the hairy stems even more, and I think we can all do with greater appreciation for hairy stems.

Every year, I try to find new plants in the buttercup family to grow. This has sometimes involved painstaking attempts at germinating the seeds (not all of them are easy or co-operative) and searching far and wide for specific cultivars or varieties of these plants. What if I just have to get my paws on a double flowered form of marsh marigold? How would I go about acquiring the white-fruited form of baneberry? I am totally enamoured with this plant group.

My interest (okay, mild obsession) with the buttercup family has served me well.

It has brought numerous and unusual plants to my garden, such as the spring Adonis, and more common and well-known perennials as well like the gorgeous and many faceted anemones. The globeflowers (Trollius) are also in this family and their relentlessly orange flowers every June fill my heart with joy. This is a family of plants well worth getting acquainted with.

A song can help to brighten life’s darker days For those of us who remember him, Jimmy Durante was both a capable comedian and a skilled musician. In the early 1930s, Durante wrote a song that became identified with him. It began, “Ya gotta start of each day with a song, / Even when things go wrong.” Even though some experience dark days when that’s virtually impossible, there is some wisdom in the song’s advice all the same.

The right songs can cheer us, lift our spirits and brighten our day.

In the Word of God, King Saul of Israel illustrates that.

When a black mood would grip his soul, young David would come and play his harp for the depressed king.

When he did so, we read, “Then Saul would become refreshed and well [cheerful], and the distressing spirit would depart from him.” (I Sam. 16:23) Missionaries Paul and Silas provide another example.

For their ministry for Christ, they were beaten, and cast into a prison cell in Philippi, with their feet fastened in stocks. (Acts 16:23-24) But even in that awful place, they found joy in serving the Lord. “At midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and

(Job 35:10) Over the centuries since the New Testament era began, something like a million Christian hymns have been written. Some of these describe incidents recorded in the Bible. Others teach the doctrines found there – particularly proclaiming the gospel of grace, and salvation through Christ.

And still others are actually the personal testimonies of the songwriters themselves.

They tell of God’s faithfulness in bringing them through trying times.

When we sing Fanny Crosby’s All the Way My Saviour Leads Me, we are joining her in praise for how the Lord met a financial need in an amazing way. When we sing Joseph Scriven’s What a Friend We Have in

Jesus, we are sharing what he discovered of the comfort of the Saviour, after his fiancée drowned on the eve of their wedding.

Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (1851-1920) was a schoolteacher in Philadelphia. She also wrote hundreds of fine gospel songs. Many have a joyful tone, though she struggled for years with a painful back injury. The joy of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as her Saviour, and of having an opportunity to serve Him brightened her days.

One particular song that reflects this, speaks of the privilege and blessing of prayer (cf. Heb. 4:15-16).

Written in 1898, it’s called Singing I Go. One stanza says, “When to the throne of grace I flee, / I find the promise true, / The mighty arms upholding me / Will bear my burdens too.” Then comes

the lively refrain, “Singing I go along life’s road, / Praising the Lord, praising the Lord, / Singing I go along life’s road, / For Jesus has lifted my load.”

A couple of decades after the song was introduced, it was adopted for a rather unusual use in the home of another great gospel musician. Billy Graham’s longtime soloist, Bev Shea, tells of what his home was like,

growing up as a boy in Winchester, Ont. On school days, when it was time for the six children to rise, his mother would sound a chord on the piano and sing the refrain of the song. Then she’d call out, cheerfully, “Get up, everybody. One hour until school!”

Shae called Singing I Go “mother’s alarm clock.” It remained a favourite of his, one he recorded. And years

later, he hosted a radio program called Club Time, that used the song as its theme song. On the program each week, Shae featured the favourite hymn of some famous person. Babe Ruth’s was God Is Ever Beside Me; Kate Smith’s favourite was I Love to Tell the Story; and John Charles Thomas’s was Softly and Tenderly. We have many songs of praise that can brighten life’s path.

What song shall I sing?

This evening my son and I are going for a drive and a long talk. Let me preface the explanation by stating that I am not depressed, I simply want to have my end-of-life health care directives down on paper before the inevitable becomes the immediate.

Among the things I’ve been considering are these: am I willing to go through cancer treatments again?

How about a care facility?

Am I willing to spend my final years in a wheelchair?

To whom do I leave my vast treasures? Actually that last example is a joke, meant to lighten up this article.

Seriously, though, I hadn’t realized how many options and situations need to be

addressed. I count myself fortunate in having a son who specializes in geriatric care; without his expertise this exercise would be even more difficult.

Although not related to my future medical care, I’m also in the process of planning my funeral service. Again, I’m not obsessed with dying, just with having the right music for the occasion. Even that isn’t turning out to be as

easy as I originally thought it would be. Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee is at the top of my list and has been for years. The grand old hymns of promise, He the Pearly Gates will Open and How Beautiful Heaven Must Be are blessed contenders. The focus of it all, however, is found in the words, “I shall see Him, face to face, and tell the story, saved by grace.”

Among all the choices I’ve ever made or ever will make, by far the best was making Him the Lord of my life.

“For me to life is Christ — His life in me; and to die is gain — the gain of the glory of eternity.” Philippians 1:21 AMP How I’ll sing over there!

Spend some quality family time together. Worship at the church of your choice.
