Executive Director Ryan Bater gave an enthusiastic overview of the organization’s operations over the past year.

Efforts to attract major events to the community have been

successful in that a Provincial Snowmobile Festival is being hosted Feb. 26 and 27. The community will also host the Saskatchewan 55+ Games July 5 to 7. Bater says 650 athletes are expected to take part.

extensive renovations there, the organization is now able to fully focus on some of the other major projects they have going on this year.

The organization did go into a deficit of $124,000 last year, which concerned some people, but Bater explained that was a one-time only expense to invest existing financial reserves into the brand launch.

The brand is “The Battlefords — Everything Under the Sun” which is seen on their promotional materials and stands set up throughout the community.

It was adopted as part of the organization’s shift towards “promoting the community and not just an organization,” Bater told directors at the meeting.

Destination Battlefords is projecting a balanced budget for 2016. To meet the budget, they intend to have only two seasonal staff.

That is down from previous years, but both Bater and Kerry Volk are now working out of the River Valley Centre location full time instead of at their former location downtown, and that is expected to help financially.

In general, Bater called 2015 a “very good year” and was buoyant about the prospects for 2016.

“I feel really good about the organization right now,” said Bater.

“The ship has righted, and we’re going in the right direction, and things are really good. All of our renovations are done.”

Bater presented the strategic plan for 2015-16, which included a number of initiatives happening this year.

The organization’s strategic focus has been on convention and events, tourism marketing, investment attraction and internal operations. Event attraction has

Bater also talked about the organization’s website and mobile app, and their

extensive social media marketing efforts. He spoke of efforts to optimize their website for search engines such as Google, in order to get maximum hits.

“This is how people are getting information and making decisions,” said Bater.

He described some of the partnerships the organization has been able to forge to promote tourism in the region.

One example was working with the Battlefords Trail Breakers Club to develop a partnership with Tourism Saskatchewan for a half-page ad in Snowriders magazine. That is in connection to the upcoming Provincial Snowmobile Festival.

Bater pointed to that as a way to “pool financial resources to place an ad that would have cost $4,000.”

There was one piece of housekeeping at the meeting, and that was a bylaw amendment allowing the organization to trade and promote itself as “Destination Battlefords” instead of as “Battlefords Tourism.” That passed unanimously.

Living Sky to help La Loche

Living Sky School Division plans to send supports to La Loche to help people deal with the tragedy there.

Four people were killed and seven injured in shootings that took place in the community Jan. 22. Some of the shootings took place at the La Loche Community School.

Director of Education Randy Fox filled in Living Sky board members on the plans to help at their meeting Wednesday, including sending counsellors to La Loche to deal with the aftermath of the tragedy.

“There’s a real severe need there now for counselling and some other supports,” said Fox. A number of school divisions have sent counsellors to La Loche, with Sask. Rivers School Division sending eight, Fox reported. The intention is for Living Sky to send counsellors as well.

The idea is to have two counsellors go in and work two-day rotations as a support team.

It’s limited to two days because any more than that and they would burn out, said Fox. “It’s a pretty intense situation,” he said.

They have talked to their counsellors and the plan would be to have a couple of counsellors go up for a couple of days.

Some names would be submitted to the ministry who could go for a short period of time.

The effort would be a co-ordinated one. Fox noted they wanted to try to avoid a situation of people just showing up wanting to help.

“It’s a question of whether they’re really qualified to

help, and then you try and find accommodations for them in a place where there aren’t many accommodations,” said Fox. This way, there would be places to stay and meal plans in place for enough people.

The other need was from Northern Lights School Division, who need support from lead people, as their own officials were “just swamped” with dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy.

“So the business of their school division has really dragged to a halt,” said Fox. This included such basic things as making sure bills were paid.

He said the division’s superintendants and he would be prepared to go to La Loche and help out for a couple of days.

Fox said they would “not let things fall to pieces here” but wanted to be “good citizens” and offer their help.

He called the La Loche tragedy an “unbelievably difficult situation” that took up large amounts of his time over the past week.

Among Fox’s priorities was the need to “be aware of our own students and be connected to our own students,” and if there was any suggestion of a threat to follow up on it. Fox pointed to at least one concerning incident in the division.

“We had one student on the weekend who was seen carrying a gun and heard making some talk about La Loche,” said Fox. “I don’t want to get into that, but you know, that’s just really concerning.

I’m not saying anything would’ve happened but we have to be up front with this … we’d be fooling ourselves to think something like this could never happen to any of our schools.”

In other news from the board meeting: In his report to the board, Fox said a meeting is scheduled with four of the area’s MLAs on Feb. 29 at 4:30 p.m. The director of education stated that likely topics would include the budget in general, the funding model, supports for infrastructure and supports for learning.

The four area MLAs confirmed for that meeting are Herb Cox, Scott Moe, Larry Doke and Jeremy Harrison.

Fox is also hoping to set something up with members of the opposition.

A meeting was held Jan. 18 about the emergency services responder training program. It was noted in Fox’s report that while the program started as an effort to recruit volunteer fire personnel, it has now become an opportunity for students to earn high school credits and begin training for a career in emergency services.

The plan is to implement the program in the school division in the fall, offering a classroom component at NBCHS and extend it to other schools through distance learning.

The chief financial report was given by Lonny Darroch, including an update on a bus accident that took place on the afternoon of Jan. 18 in Battleford.

The bus had been travelling northbound from Battleford to pick up more students in North Battleford.

But when approaching the Highway 16 overpass, a southbound vehicle lost control, crossed the median and struck the bus, causing it to go into a skid. The bus hit the guardrail underneath the overpass. Four students were on board the bus but neither the students nor the driver sustained any injuries.

Finally, substantial completion inspection took place Jan. 26 at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School expansion.

It was a three-hour inspection and it was reported the architect’s report was to be completed that week as well. The board was informed the new gymnasium would be ready by Monday and the report is the new floor is shiny and the basketball nets are up.

NBCHS has been undergoing the renovation to accommodate the move of Grades 7 and 8 to the high school.

I’m really fond of my new car. Penny (you figure it out), a brand, spanking new Chevy Cruz, and I have been united for the past few months.

For several years I’ve been driving a three-quarter ton truck, known to me as Horace. Although I enjoyed the respect I commanded on the road, Horace was a pig in more ways than one. Switching over to a small car has been an adjustment, but mostly for the good.

There is really much to like about this little car. She’s easy to park, a trip to the gas pump doesn’t lead to heart palpitations (although it takes many more trips to build up to a free car wash), she’s easy to handle and those little gerbils under the hood are a peppy bunch.

I have really only one beef. I sincerely detest the woman who lives in the dashboard.

I think something has gone seriously wrong with the world when we are reduced to arguing, and I’ll admit it, swearing at, the (expletive deleted) in the dashboard.

Mostly we argue about the radio. It seems one cannot simply fiddle with a dial in order to tune to one’s favourite radio station. One must push a button, wait for the beep and then instruct the radio to tune to (guilty secret here) 540 am. That’s where it should always be, but sometimes my husband uses the car and he prefers the soul-sucking message delivered by Newstalk Radio, and sometimes little miss in the dashboard likes to just change it up on me all on her own initiative.

So I push the button, wait for the prompt, give the command and am asked, “did you say?” and then she’ll say something totally off the wall. Soon I’m shouting, “no, no, no” and dementedly shaking my fist at the dashboard.

She either has a hearing impairment or I have a speech impediment. In any case we cannot communicate, at all.

One harshly cold day dashboard mouthpiece decided to spontaneously turn on the navigation system and arbitrarily chose my destination. As I made my way to where “I” wanted to go, she kept spouting off directions and telling me I was “off route, you must turn in 30 metres, you are off route!” I told her to shut up, but it wasn’t until my daughter got in the car and figured out how to turn the system off that she finally did so.

The backup camera, the skylight, the surprisingly roomy trunk are all excellent features in a car. A yappy dashboard I can live without. I am learning to manually tune the radio and just keep my fingers crossed that the navigation system remains silent.

Arguing with one’s vehicle is surely a sign of mental deterioration, and there are many folks out there who think I’ve gone down that road far enough already. *** Don’t forget, I’m being arrested today. Valorie Higgs is going to slap the cuffs on at 5 p.m. and haul me off to a dog cage at the Battlefords Animal Shelter. If you want me to spend three hours in the cage pick up your phone and dial 306-937-MEOW and make a pledge to the Shelter Us campaign. Otherwise I’ll just bail myself out and head home for a shower.

Walk for Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is an ordeal not only for those who suffer the incurable disease, but also for their loved ones who must deal with the situation.

The effort to find a cure goes on and this year the annual Walk for Alzheimer’s took place indoors at the NationsWEST Field House, where a large number of participants walked between noon and 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. This is the fourth annual Alzheimer’s walk in the Battlefords, and according to organizers they had their biggest turnout yet. The event began with a moment of silence and a memory lap in honour of those who lost their lives to Alzheimer’s. Approximatley 70 participated, raising $11,320. The provincial total was $175,000.

Back on track, BNS dominate the Nipawin Hawks

A heartbreaking loss to Melfort in the dying seconds of the third period gave the North Stars a rare two-game losing streak. The Battlefords hadn’t lost three consecutive games since Oct 31, when they came out on the wrong end of a 3-1 game to the Bruins.

Friday night at the Civic Centre the black and white had a chance to right the ship in their fourth and final meeting against the Nipawin Hawks, who had won six of their last 10 coming into the tilt.

They did just that. A 24save shutout performance from Ryan Rewerts and an offensive explosion made sure of it, winning 6-0.

“Tonight Ryan gave us the saves he needed to give us. The shots were equal going into the second period. Ryan is definitely in the driver seat now, and it’s his job to lose.” Head Coach Kevin Hasselberg said of his goalie situation.

The black and white cooled off the Hawks late in the opening 20 minutes.

After Rewerts made a couple of tremendous saves on the doorstep, the North Stars capitalized on their third power play of the first period. The power play unit was able to move the puck around efficiently and set themselves up in the offensive zone. Layne Young made a crisp pass to Igor Leonenko, who was perched just outside the right crease.

Leonenko one-timed the puck into the open cage for his 33rd of the season, giving the North Stars a 1-0 lead heading into the middle stanza.

In what was a neutral zone game, the North Stars started to crack the toughto-play-against defence of the Hawks midway through the second, but didn’t have anything to show for it.

Downs found Dustin Gorgi in the slot for a quality opportunity, but wasn’t able to beat Kristian Stead. Then it was Jordan Wiest with an open cage from the point but

couldn’t beat the numerous bodies in front of the crease.

Gorgi wouldn’t be denied five minutes later, though.

Thursday night the AAA Stars had yet another opportunity to solidify a playoff spot clashing against a team just three points behind them in the standings.

The Beardy’s Blackhawks were coming off a 9-3 loss at the hands of the Tisdale Trojans while the Stars looked to bounce back after splitting their series in Notre Dame.

Brewster made no mistake snapping his 15th of the season into the back of the net, giving the black and white a

To say they played well would be an understatement.

The Stars completely controlled Sunday’s game from the opening whistle to the

final buzzer, firing 57 shots on net in a 9-1 effort. Sixteen of 18 skaters recorded at least one point. The Stars sit in seventh, just one point back of Prince Albert for sixth place.

Jake Taylor did his part in between the pipes. The rookie netminder stopped 22 of 23 shots for his seventh win of the campaign.

Less than a minute into the tilt Nayte Zip found himself all alone on the doorstep after a deflection caught the blade of his stick. He made no mistake on the first shot of the hockey game, depositing the puck over the glove of Riley Higdon for his fifth of the campaign.

Before the game was five minutes old, the Stars restored their advantage after a Artem Chupin goal. Fresh

Special teams continued to be the difference as the Stars tallied another power play mark late in the middle stanza. Owen Lamb found Reid before snapping a shot to the front of the net, where it found the stick of Saworski, deflecting home his 17th of the campaign with two seconds left.

Beardy’s wouldn’t back down in the third. Jared Hamm kicked off the scoring after dancing around the last defender to send himself on a breakaway. A nice forehand, backhand move later the score was 3-1, sliding the puck through the five-hole

of Alm. The Blackhawks continued their offensive flurry, scoring just 20 seconds later.

Hamm registered the assist this time, making the initial shot while Jordan Unger deflected it home for his 12th of the campaign.

The black and white kept applying the pressure, restoring their two-goal lead after Lamb found Saworski in the slot for his second of the game. Lamb also registered his second helper on the goal, making it 4-2.

The Stars all but put the game away with 11 minutes to play in the final frame.

puck and busted down the right wing. After putting a move on the defence deep in the Blackhawks zone, he found Jordan Mish on the left crease, beating the left pad of McLeod and giving the Battlefords a three-goal advantage.

Beardy’s made it a onegoal game late in the final frame with a goal from Clayton McKenzie and Hamm’s second of the tilt, but the Stars held on.

Alm made 24 saves in the winning effort.

Meyers more than doubled his offensive numbers in 2015-16 with his second of the game and third of the year after taking a pass from Dawson Bacon.

On deck for the Stars is a big test against the second place team. They take a twoday road trip to Moose Jaw next weekend against the Generals.

We will always remember her hugs and kisses, her words of encouragement and most of all, her unconditional love. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and lived to spoil them. Snow blower makes removal four times faster Staff

City of North Battleford officials say a new snow blower is contributing to a big spike in efficiency and productivity.

It is a LM 220 loadermounted snow blower that was purchased in the spring of 2015 and arrived in the fall.

City crews received training on the operation and maintainance the machine Jan. 14 and started using the new equipment over the past couple of weeks.

According to operations foreman Colin Carriere,

they “started at 4 a.m. … and picked up the windrows on 100th, 102nd, 103rd Streets and on 11th and 10th Avenues within four hours.”

That normally would have taken two days, he said in a statement.

In the past, graders would push snow onto the sides of the streets, and these would be picked up by a front-end loader, tipped it into a truck that hauled the snow to the designated dump site.

The new loader-mounted snow blower will drive slowly through the snow windrows picking the snow up and transporting it through

the telescopic chute onto the accompanying truck. The City says it allows crews to remove the snow with only minor disruption to traffic flow.

In a news release, City Manager Jim Puffalt says the arrival of the snow blower is improving productivity.

“Finding new ways to increase productivity of dayto-day tasks is one of our goals in the City,” said Puffalt.

“By putting new and equipment more suited to the task we were able to complete this task four times faster than before.”

With snow on the ground and spring several weeks away, I’ve been trying to warm myself up by thinking about hot things. Since this is a gardening column, I’ll focus on hot peppers.

Pepper heat is measured in Scoville units (su) and is a measure of the amount of capsaicin. The hot capsaicin that burns your mouth and taste buds will burn all parts of your body that come in contact and make your life extremely uncomfortable for a while. After handling pepper plants and fruit, thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before touching your eyes, blowing your nose or going to the bathroom.

Our growing season is too short to direct seed peppers. However, with transplants planted in late May or early June (after all chance of frost is past), hot peppers will easily mature before fall. To grow your own pepper transplants, start seedlings in late March. Provide plenty of warmth for germination. After germination, add bright light to the warmth until ready to transplant.

Hot peppers require full sun and heat in the garden.

Dig in well-rotted compost or manure to create a rich, fertile site. They require ample water throughout the growing season (one inch of water per week). Plastic mulch on the soil along with a supported cloth crop cover will provide a warm environment for pepper roots and plants, even on cooler days. The cloth cover can be kept on for the entire growing season (lift to weed). Green fruit is mature enough to harvest when it is

firm and waxy to the touch.

Or leave them on the plant until later in the season when they ripen to orange or red for maximum flavour and heat.

One of my favorite hot peppers is Big Bomb (Stokes Seeds) which is a cherry type that matures to red early in the season, providing medium hot, attractive green or red peppers for your favourite salsa or chili.

If starting your own from seed, there are several hot pepper cultivars that I recommend for the Prairie garden: Hot Hungarian Wax peppers (5,000 su) are light yellow/green, banana shaped and often confused with sweet banana peppers.

[Blazing Banana (T&T Seeds), Inferno (Stokes), Super Hungarian Hot (Stokes) and Hungarian Yellow Hot (Early’s)] Fresno Chili pepper is milder than jalapeno pepper but similar in shape with thinner walls. Time to maturity is usually shorter than jalapeno peppers. [Flaming Flare (Vesey’s Seeds)] Jalapeno peppers (5,000 su), most commonly found with nachos and cheese, start out green and mature to red with their best flavour produced in late summer and early fall. Chipotle peppers (slightly hotter than fresh jalapeno peppers) are smoked and dried red jalapeno peppers. [Mucho Nacho (T&T Seeds), Early Jalapeno (Early’s) and El Jefe

(William Dam Seeds)] Serrano peppers (25,000 su) resemble miniature jalapeno peppers (one to 1.5 inches long) and mature from waxy green to orange or red. Usually the smaller the Serrano pepper, the hotter it is. [Serrano Del Sol (T&T Seeds)] Cayenne peppers (60,000 su) easily mature during our growing season. They are usually five to six inches long and one-third to one inch. in diameter at the stem end. Cayenne peppers are used in Cajun recipes, cayenne pepper and many natural medicines in history known for their healing properties. [Cayenne Long (Early’s), Long Red Cayenne (Stokes), Cayanetta (Vesey’s Seeds) and Ring of Fire (Stokes)] Thai chili peppers (150,000 su) are used mainly in Thai and other Asian curries. Thai peppers are not more than one inch long and range in color from green to red when fully mature.

[Flame Hybrid (William Dam Seeds)] Habanero and Scotch Bonnet peppers (325,000 to 500,000 su) are small lantern-shaped peppers (one to one and three-quarters inches long) that mature from green to red or orange. They require a long season to mature and should be protected with crop covers and plastic mulch. Scotch Bonnet peppers are typically smaller than habanero peppers and are popular in Caribbean cuisine. [Habanero (Early’s Farm & Garden), Burning Bush Hybrid (T&T Seeds)] One of the world’s hottest peppers is Ghost Chile (Stokes Seeds). This pepper, originating from India, has a heat rating over 1,000,000 su. Like the habanero and Scotch bonnet peppers, Ghost Chile has a longer growing season than other hot peppers.

Dwarf sour cherries for the Prairies One of the best things to happen to the fruit industry in Saskatchewan is the prairie cherry. This great fruit is not only easy to grow but a prolific producer. In my landscape I have seven cherry trees and last fall they were in peak production and we were surrounded by cherries. We plan to share those cherries with you if you decide to attend our annual fundraising dinner Feb. 13. In order to understand how this fabulous fruit was developed it is necessary to understand a little bit of fruit breeding history.

Thousands of years ago, the sweet cherry (Prunus avium) was crossed with the Mongolian cherry (Prunus fruiticosa), which resulted in the sour cherry (Prunus cerasus). During the 20th century, much breeding has occurred to increase the cold hardiness of the sour cherry resulting in better survival in colder areas like ours. For over 60 years there have been many, many people involved in the quest to develop a successful cherry for our region. For those involved with these breeding programs the fabulous dwarf sour cherry is often fondly referred to as the

The dwarf sour cherry (Prunus cerasus) is truly a dwarf sour cherry and is not grafted but grows on its own rootstock. In 1999, SK Carmine Jewel was released by the University of Saskatchewan as a named dwarf sour cherry cultivar. It is an attractive shrub with glossy leaves and reaches a height of about two metres. Each spring you will be rewarded with a showy bloom. The flowers are white and large and look spectacular against the glossy green foliage. The fruit when ripe has a dark purple skin and flesh and has a small pit in relation to the fruit size. It matures in late July or early August.

The juice is a beautiful red colour, does not stain and can be used to make a multitude of products. This dwarf sour cherry is truly hardy here, is easy to grow and has very few problems with insects or disease.

Needless to say, this cherry has created much excitement, which in turn has created the impetus to

develop different cultivars of these great prairie cherries. The benefit of growing different cultivars ensures a longer fruiting season for the grower, as some cherries will ripen earlier than others. As a general rule, cultivars that ripen earlier will be smaller and less sweet but the shrub itself will likely be slightly hardier. Those ripening later will generally have larger fruit and be slightly sweeter.

In 2003, five experimental cultivars were released to the public by the University of Saskatchewan. They have also now been named and registered. The Romance Series of cherries are already proving to be popular.

Do beware that it has been evident in my garden that they do sucker.

The Romance Series

Romeo is similar to SK Carmine Jewel both in the size of tree and the fruit itself. However, it does ripen later and usually will be ready to harvest in late August or early September.

Valentine is one of the

most productive cultivars with fruit ripening in early to mid-August. The bush is slightly larger usually being about 2.5 metres in height.

The flavour of the cherries is a bit tarter than some of the other cultivars so it is best suited for processing rather than fresh eating.

Crimson Passion is a slightly smaller bush reaching a height of 1.75 metres.

The fruit is dark red and is wonderful when eaten fresh.

It matures mid-August. Of the series it is one of those with the highest sugar content.

Juliette is also excellent eaten fresh and ripens in

early to mid-August. The bush will reach approximately two meters.

Cupid has dark red to black fruit and is also very nice fresh. It matures late August to early September with a blooming time that is slightly later than most of the other cultivars.

All of these cultivars are self-fruitful. What that means is that they are able to produce fruit without another cherry as a pollinator. Fruit will set by self pollination, however bees are needed to do the pollen transfer in the flower itself.

Because of their dwarf stature, these cherries are suit-

able for every size of landscape and as you need only one to ensure fruit production it is a great option for smaller urban landscapes.

However, after you have eaten and processed the fruit you will quickly wish that you had planted more than one to ensure you have more of that fabulous fruit.

Medieval Celebration

North Battleford went back to the days of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Tale at the Western Development Museum as they hosted a medieval feast. The whole idea started as a birthday party for guest of honour Leah Milton, but it turned into a much larger event that was opened up to the public. There’s not much in life we know for certain There are some odd expressions that have entered the English language, and seem to cling to it like prickly burrs. For instance, many times we are told that an item is available “for free,” when a simple “free” would do. Or there’s the word “so” used frequently to begin sentences when it has no meaning related to what comes after.

And there’s the person who inserts, “ya know,” into every other sentence, as a kind of verbal punctuation.

But the words are often nonsense, being attached to new information, things that the hearer definitely does not know–ya know.

It got me thinking about what we know and what we don’t. At the every-day level, it is difficult to think of things we can say we know to be so without the slightest doubt or question. Benjamin Franklin said there were only two things certain in life, death and taxes. But even those need to be qualified. Taxes may be cut or abolished.

And the Bible teaches that those Christians who are alive at the time of Christ’s return will be caught up to meet Him, transformed in an instant, without passing through death (I Cor. 15:5152; I Thess. 4:17).

Think of the many things we state as certainties which actually aren’t. He

knows his computer is secure from hackers; She knows her husband wouldn’t cheat on her; I know I’m in good health; I know... But, of course, we don’t. Not really.

One of the areas the Bible addresses in this regard is the plans we make. James says, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit;’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (Jas. 4:13-15).

The only true certitudes in life are rooted in the holy character and written promises of Almighty God. He is a God of truth (Deut. 32:4), who cannot lie (Tit. 1:2).

The Bible itself is called

“the word of truth” (II Tim. 2:15), and we can count absolutely on what God has said there. On that basis,

the Apostle Paul testifies, “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day [the day of Christ’s return]” (II Tim. 1:12).

Knowing God through a deeply personal walk of faith, the patriarch Job was able, even in a time of terrible trouble and distress, to say, “I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed [i.e. this mortal body], this I know, that in

my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another [perhaps meaning, not as a stranger, as a friend]” (Job 19:25-27).

Job’s great declaration of faith, “I know that my Redeemer lives,” was used

by George Frideric Handel in his peerless oratorio, Messiah, where it comes in the third section, dealing with the coming Resurrection Day. Among the hymns that have been built on Job’s words is one published in 1775 by an English clergy-

man named Samuel Medley (1738-1799). In eight stanzas, the song enumerates about twenty of the blessings that are ours because our Saviour lives.

Medley’s hymn begins: “I know that my Redeemer lives; / What comfort this sweet sentence gives! / He lives, He lives, who once was dead; / He lives, my ever living Head. / He lives to bless me with His love, / He lives to plead for me above. / He lives my hungry soul to feed, / He lives to help in time of need.”

When friendship rules I’ve always heard that if you’re going to mess things up, make a good job of it. Based on that premise, this week I did an excellent job of demonstrating my skills.

Anyone who knows me knows that I truly enjoy cooking, baking and entertaining. I don’t create gourmet dishes, but I work hard at serving delicious home-style cooking with health considerations and financial constraints in mind. Thursday, with flavour, nutrition and a budget included in my considerations, I went

about planning what was supposed to be a delightfully delicious supper for some dear friends. I purchased an appropriately sized and priced beef roast, peeled some of the potatoes still remaining from last summer’s crop, boiled red beets and dug into the deep freezer for

apples. This was going to be one good meal!

As it turned out the recipe for roast beef I found in one of my trusted cooking websites, was delicious, but rare on the inside (as in bleeding rare). Fred and I loved it, Sharon couldn’t bring herself to try it. Hubby graciously ate a slice. And the beets. Beets, I found out, are the one vegetable that Fred detests. Fortunately Sharon let me know in time to dig out some frozen peas to supplement that end of the meal. The apple pie was everything

I’d hoped for and, indeed, the redeeming feature of the evening repast. The best part, though, was the great fellowship and the laughter we shared. It truly was an example of the joy that results when friendship trumps human frailty.

In the end I confirmed the veracity of two premises: Make a good job of making a mess and, don’t try new recipes on visitors.

Even better? He’s always there!

It is a good life

Since the closure of the Agriplex arena the ice time situation for minor hockey in the Battlefords has been described by some as “ridiculous.” What would be a solution?

• Build another small arena.

• Someone should build a commercial arena like they have in Saskatoon.

My life isn’t perfect, but it is perfect for me.

That statement is my new motto. I said this out loud after living one of the most uncomfortable weeks in recent history. You know those days when you obsess about something that really doesn’t matter and you can’t let it go? It had been one of “those” weeks.

I do a decent job of dealing with life as it comes along. If something is running through my mind and making me uncomfortable, I try to do what is within my power to ease the discomfort and let it go. If an apology is required, I apologize. If I need to say something to stand my ground on some issue, I try to address it.

If I need to do something, I try to do it so I can be done with it.

My mind is a rotating door of mini-issues I roll with on a daily basis.

Most things are small.

Other things need time to marinate. The odd little thing feels bigger than the rest but in reality, I have it pretty easy over here in my little corner of the world.

I work from home. I work for incredible people and I received the best compliment a caregiver can receive. One of my parents referred me to a co-worker who is considering changing daycares.

This gave me an opportunity to talk with all of my parents as I investi-

gated the possibilities of adding one more to the mix. These conversations pick me up and carry me when I feel like I am “not enough.”

I have discovered the most effective way for me to do my job is to sit on the floor with the kids and just roll with the day.

How many people can say that about their job? Am I lucky or am I lucky?

While I’ve been sitting on the floor, I’ve found a different vantage point to my little world. I’ve grabbed a notebook and started dreaming again.

So far the dreams are free, attainable and revolve around working with what I already have.

All I need is a little bit of time, energy and one more set of muscles. I’ve been missing my dream state and I found it again.

By sitting still, on the floor, with kids crawling all over me. Who knew it could be so easy?

When I lock the door and close the blinds at the end of my daycare day, I feel awash with peace, joy, contentment and ease. I tend to my after daycare duties, then I sit back and revel in my wonderful little world.

I live in a world where my work comes to me. I earn enough to live a comfortable life. Everything I need is within these four walls and if it isn’t here, I have the ability to pick up

LIFE as I know it

We have our health.

That is huge. It is beyond huge. I hear of the ailments, health issues, chronic pain and bigger than life worries that seem to be affecting far too many people within my little circle. I know how fortunate we are to wake up to life as we expect it each morning. I know this could change in a New York minute. I don’t obsess about that fact but it does make me appreciate that which we have.

I think of all I have and am so annoyed with myself for letting little things get under my skin. When I waste time worrying over things that really don’t matter, I chastise myself. I know better!

I developed the bad habit of comparing myself to others. I joined a Childcare Connection site and I read what other caregivers have to offer as they sell their daycare services to the masses. I don’t have all they have to offer. I don’t have the same education,

letters after my name and all the food-safe courses under my belt. I run on 37 years of parenting experience, common sense and an open door policy where I communicate freely with the parents of my children.

I’m “just me.” When I compare myself to others, I’m nothing.

I dropped that group. I don’t need to fill my head with comparisons that make me feel like what I have, who I am and what I have to offer is any less than anyone else. I much prefer to live quietly in my bubblewrapped little world where I don’t measure myself up to the world around me.

I’m tired of beating myself up. It is exhausting and self-destructive. I know I need a healthy dose of constructive criticism to keep myself on my toes, but not at the cost of crushing my hopes and dreams.

It is a good life I am living. I just need to sit myself back down on the floor and keep that new perspective in line with what I can effectively accomplish within the confines of this blissful little existence of mine.
