Sewer main work will reroute Territorial Drive traffic Staff

The City of North Battleford is installing storm sewer mains across Territorial Drive near Railway Avenue,

resulting in street closures.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, southbound traffic on Territorial Drive will be re-routed to

Pioneer Avenue and south on Battleford Road to Railway Avenue.

The Railway Avenue service road will have lim-

ited access to and from the Frontier Mall-Casino area.

Please use Heritage Way and Carlton Trail. Access to Elk Ridge Plaza food strip mall

will be from 114th Street.

The City of North Battleford says this project is expected to last four to five days, with road restoration

to follow.

The City asks motorists to follow signs, slow down through the construction zone and be cautious of workers.

It was at that time that it became public knowledge that the new Saskatchewan Hospital would include an integrated correctional facility to house both male and female adult offenders.

Access Prairies Partnership was one of three groups

shortlisted in the bidding process and the awarding of the tender was announced in early July.

Access Prairies Partnership includes a number of partners including Graham Design Builders LP, Carillion Canada Inc., Gracorp Capital Advisors LP, Carillion Private Finance Ltd., Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. and WSP Canada.

The province has estimated construction on the publicly owned facility to be completed by the spring of 2018.

100th Street

Rain delays rehab Staff North Battleford’s 100 Street rehabilitation project is a few days behind schedule as a result of rain delays earlier in the month, but work continues to progress as planned, says the City. th

1400 block

Preparations were to begin this weekend for paving on the 1400 block, with paving commencing later in the week. Once paving is complete, this block will be fully opened to traffic.

1500 block

Patch paving on the 1500 block is scheduled for Monday, and surface paving is planned for later in the week. Once paving is complete this block will be opened to traffic. Businesses and residences on the 1500 block have been disconnected from temporary water supplies, and the Precautionary Drinking Water

Advisory required as a result of the construction work has been lifted.

1600 block

Underground water and sewer repairs on the 1600 block are scheduled to be completed early next week.

Power line crews will begin work on the 1600 block, and road patching will progress throughout the week.

Depending on the progress of the underground work, power line work and road patching, the surface paving on the 1600 block may begin next week. The 1600 block will remain closed for next week, but everyone is reminded that businesses are still accessible from the avenues and back alleys.

1700 block

Full water main replacement will begin early next week on the 1700 block.

Businesses will be connected to temporary water supplies, and will be placed on a Precautionary Drinking

Water Advisory while the water main is replaced. The 1700 block will be closed to through traffic, and most businesses will be accessible from the avenues and back alleys. Access will be maintained to Sound City from the north on 100th Street.

The water main replacement and subsequent road patching on the 1700 block is expected to take two to three weeks.

1800 block

Power line work may begin next week on the 1800 block which will result in access disruptions and road closures on that block as new street light cables are trenched in.

The City urges motorists to use caution when travelling through the work zones, and respect the safety of workers. Motorists should also be reminded to use caution, and respect the residents when travelling along detour routes.

Water advisory still in effect Staff As of press time, the Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory (PWDA) was still in effect for the city of North Battleford.

A release issued by the City of North Battleford Monday said the test for water borne parasites was returned on Friday, Aug. 14 and the F.E. Holliday Water Treatment Plant is operating as engineered.

There were no water-borne parasites in the treated water as the plant had removed all parasites found in the raw water.

The results were forwarded to the Saskatchewan Water Security Agency (SWSA) on Friday night and City technologists completed the testing of the treated water in accordance with SWSA protocol on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16, with the final tests hand delivered to the laboratory in Saskatoon.

Results are expected Tuesday, Aug. 18 and once SWSA has an opportunity to review the results, the City will be notified if the PDWA is to be lifted.

In an earlier release, the City said it “would like to thank residents and guests for their patience and efforts to conserve water usage.”

The advisory was first instated last

Tuesday. Residents were asked to boil water for at least a minute that they will consume as a precaution only.

The advisory was made necessary after the temporary shutdown of the F.E. Holliday Water Plant.

City officials addressed the situation at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, last week in which they provided more details as to what happened at the plant.

According to City Manager Jim Puffalt, the incident took place at 12:16 p.m.

Tuesday.

For six minutes, partially-treated water bypassed the water treatment processes and flowed into the treated water reservoir of the surface water plant, due to an operational error, he said.

“At 12:22 p.m., the water quality alarms went off and we immediately shut down the plant,” said Puffalt.

Unlike the cryptosporidium crisis of 2001, this boil-water order was not prompted due to people coming down sick from drinking the water.

“So far we’ve not received any report of people being sick because of the incident,” said Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu, medical health officer of Prairie North Health Region at last week’s news conference.

Battlefords RCMP are investigating the abduction of three children reported Thursday.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 13, Battlefords RCMP received a call from an adult on the Sweetgrass First Nation advising that three children, an eight-yearold female, a 13-year-old female and an 11-year-old male, had been abducted by an adult male and that they had left the area in an SUV.

Urban squirrels a menace Dear Editor The urban squirrel is a member of the rat family. These little critters belong in the country not populated areas. I know people think they’re cute. Maybe so but, they should not be fed or treated like pets.

They carry diseases and I sure wouldnt’ want a squirrel (rat) biting me, a baby or the family pet. They scavenge, eat bird’s eggs and will ruin the wiring in vehicles, sheds, garages and homes.

So please everyone don’t feed urban squirrels (rats).

Take the time to read up on them and you will find out how destructive they can be. And their cute fuzzy tails, you will find out about them as well.

Once again, please don’t feed the rats.

By Jayne Foster For those who didn’t grow up in the 1930’s, 40s, 50s or ‘60s, you can be forgiven is you don’t know who the Sons of the Pioneers are, although it’s probable that everyone who has reached adulthood by now has heard of Roy Rogers, who was a co-founder of the legendary group.

Hundreds turned out for their performance Thursday evening at the Western Development Museum. (A bouquet to the WDM for such comfortable chairs.)

Of course none of the current members of the Sons of the Pioneers can claim to be original to the group, as it has been in existence for the last 80 years, but they have kept that very special sound – the one that can truly be called “cowboy” music – intact and alive.

I’m less of a country fan than many other genres, from rock to opera, to be honest, but the strains of Cool Water, Tumbling Tumbleweed and Ghostriders in the Sky, take me back to fond memories – three kids learning how to sing harmony by singing these old “cowboy” songs along with their mother.

The evening was doubly pleasant for having found myself sitting next to visitors from Beaumont, Alta., Neil and Vera Watson. Neil’s mom was born in Battleford, and upon visiting the town to see where she had come from, they heard about the Sons of the Pioneers, so set themselves to return on that date.

Hats off to the promotor of the Sons of the Pioneers tour of Saskatchewan, Margaret Morrisette of Fort Qu’Appelle, for bringing this iconic group, probably the most popular act in Branson, Missouri, to our neck of the prairies. She even put them up at her farm to keep costs, and ultimately ticket prices, down. There is little chance she’s come out a financial winner for having taken on this project, but she’s a winner just the same.

Adult immunization focus of Rotary presentation

Very often, we tend to think immunizations are only for children. But there are diseases that are more prevalent in adults.

Adult immunization was a key focus of a noon hour address last Monday at the Rotary Club.

Prairie North Health Region’s new medical health officer, Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu, was the featured speaker on the topic.

Nsungu has worked in public health in Canada for more than a decade.

Prior to that he spent several years practising medicine in Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.

Immunization is already a prime focus for club members due to Rotary International’s work to combat polio around the world through mass-vaccination efforts.

But Nsungu’s presentation focused on the need for adults to immunize against a vast number of diseases, not just polio.

Among the vaccines Nsungu spoke about were ones such as diphtheria and tetanus, the shingles vaccine for people over age 60, the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, the measles vaccine for people born after 1970, as well as ones to prevent whooping cough, pneumonia and meningitis.

There were also travel vaccinations for such things as hepatitis A and hepatitis B. The vaccination types depends on destination. Those going to Africa might need the meningococcal vaccination, while those heading to Asia might need the Japanese encephalitis vaccine to ward off mosquito-borne diseases.

There were also the more typical vaccines against the flu, rabies and other diseases.

The presentation was an eye-opener to Rotary members who typically associate immunization with childhood vaccinations.

eases that are more prevalent in adults than in children.”

As well, the immunity for certain vaccines, not all of them, may decrease, which means people will need to get booster shots.

“It’s an important issue but unfortunately it doesn’t get the attention that it needs,” said Nsungu.

He believes one reason could be the information doesn’t circulate among adults. Another issue is that unlike childhood vaccines, “most of adult vaccines are not publicly funded so people have to pay out of pocket,” said Dr. Nsungu.

Another issue, suggested in a question posed from the floor by a Rotary member, was the availability of records.

“As children, all records are there, but for adults from a certain age it is very difficult to find reliable records.”

Dr. Nsungu advises people to consider vaccinations to protect themselves and those around them, and definitely recommended it to people planning to travel to far-away destinations. Those include familiar winter vacation getaway places where people could encounter diseases they might not find here.

“You’ll see that many of those diseases do not actually pose a big problem within Canada. But the world is a small village, a global village, so it’s very easy, actually, to bring those diseases into Canada. Of course, in that situation it will start being a problem with the person who brought them in and also it may be a problem with people around that person because those diseases may start spreading,” said Dr. Nsungu.

“So that’s extremely important. People must have it in mind that when they go for vacation they must also take their protection.”

Sandra Arias officially nominated for NDP

Federal New Democrats have officially kicked off the campaign for their candidate Sandra Arias in BattlefordsLloydminster.

Arias was officially nominated at the party’s nomination meeting on Sunday in North Battleford at Third Avenue United Church.

However, it had been known for about a week that Arias would be the nominee, as she was the only candidate to put her name forward for nomination.

She is the last New Democrat to be officially nominated for a federal riding in Saskatchewan. In speaking to reporters, Arias indicated she was happy to have the nomination finally behind her so she could start campaigning.

here, just being held back, and I want to get going,” said Arias.

“I want to start talking to people, I want to get our office set up, I want to start

He praised the way “communities came together and all Saskatchewan people really pitched in to save lives and to save homes.”

But “now that we’re through the immediate threat to communities it’s important to ask the questions about what should be done differently and what could have been done differently to avoid the situation getting to such a crisis level.”

Broten reiterated his call for an inquiry “to ask those questions, to make sure that we’re learning what happened and to make sure the right resources are being put in place.”

North Battleford was one of the communities that housed evacuees during the height of the wildfire crisis.

Afterwards, there was some criticism expressed at City Hall by councillor Ray Fox about a lack of communication between agencies during the crisis.

Broten said he has heard similar concerns.

“There was a problem with information flow and

communication between different groups and many of those on the ground, whether in a Northern community, a town, or on a First Nation – (they) really didn’t have the information that they needed. So that too, formalizing those protocols around communication, that part of the areas that needs to be fixed as well.”

On some issues important locally, Broten also had plenty to say about the news that the tender had been awarded for Saskatchewan Hospital – and that it was going ahead as a P3.

“It’s an example once again of the government putting ideology ahead of common sense,” said Broten.

He pointed to other jurisdictions and said, “P3s cost more in the long run.”

But he also had big issues with the awarding of the tender to Access Prairies Partnership, which includes out-of-province companies from Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia as well as from the United Kingdom.

“What’s really troubling is the handing of the contract to a consortium that doesn’t include one Saskatchewan company,” said Broten. “You’re sending the

She joins Conservative incumbent Gerry Ritz and Liberal Larry Ingram as candidates in the federal election Oct. 19 in Battlefords-Lloydminster. The Green Party is also fielding a candidate and expects to have their nominee in place this week.

Arias, who works as director of operations for Sunchild Law office and is a small-business owner, has also served as band councillor on Red Pheasant First Nation.

While Arias has voiced her support for a number of NDP issues, she said what really “tipped the scales” and motivated her to run was Bill C-51 – the anti-terrorism legislation.

“Bill C-51 is very scary

legislation, and people in Canada need to open up their eyes and really see what it is.”

She also was critical of the Stephen Harper government’s previous legislation such as Bill C-45 (The Jobs and Growth Act) and Bill C-38.

“What is this prime minister doing? Where is he trying to take this country?

So these bills alone have sparked me to want to stand up for the people in this riding, and want to stand up for the First Nations people in this riding, for the Métis people in this riding, for the people who don’t have a voice, who can’t find their voice yet.”

Arias says she is a longtime supporter of the NDP. “I believe in their vision, I believe in what they have as a party to bring to the table – where they stand on all of their issues is something I

can get behind 100 percent.”

A campaign manager is in place and the party expects to have a campaign office up and running shortly.

Both former MP and MLA Len Taylor and the party’s 2011 nominee, Glenn Tait, were at the nomination meeting and pledged to offer their support and assistance to Arias during the campaign.

Taylor also served as guest speaker at the nomination in which he gave a rousing endorsement of Arias and urged NDP supporters to campaign and get the word out.

“Everybody in this room has to take her message all around our communities, our neighbourhoods, and make sure that when people go into the ballot box on election day, they’re going to feel comfortable supporting Sandra Arias and the NDP.”

The Regional Optimist also asked Broten about the environment file, particularly after the appointment of

“We’ve seen cut after cut to programs when it comes to addressing the environment, when it comes to reducing greenhouse gases, to

make sure we have a better approach.”

Broten said the government “misses out on the opportunities that are there to make sure that we have a strong environmental record and that we are seizing every chance that we have to develop green energy and green jobs.”

Broten visits the Battlefords on summer tour

It was a busy day of activities for provincial NDP leader Cam Broten in the Battlefords on Monday of last week.

He appeared at a noonhour luncheon at Third Avenue United Church in North Battleford, and then that evening took part in the Northwest Territorial Days parade where he waved to the crowd from a classic vehicle.

In between, Broten took part in meetings with various community stakeholders, including health care workers, as well as with firefighters at the North Battleford Fire Hall.

It was typical of the kind of summer it has been for the opposition leader as he has crisscrossed the province.

“It’s been a really busy summer,” said Broten.

He has taken part in various parades, barbeques and other events, as well as listening to people and getting their feedback.

Broten had been particularly busy during the height of the wildfire situation.

The planting and maintenance of raspberries

By Sara Williams There was a time when every prairie garden had a row of raspberries. And, why not? They’re hardy, not difficult to care for, generally insect and disease-free and well worth the effort.

Nothing can beat a handful of sun-kissed raspberries, fresh off the canes in July and August.

Raspberries should remain productive for 10 to 20 years, so careful site selection and soil preparation is important. A good loam-based soil in full sun is recommended. Ensure that the soil is weed-free (especially of perennial weeds like quack grass) and well amended with organic matter such as compost, peat moss or well-rotted manure.

Avoid frost pockets or areas of poor drainage and provide shelter from wind.

Spring planting is preferred as plants break dormancy fairly early. This also allows for the development of a healthy root system during the first year. Canes should be set at the same depth or up to five centimetres deeper than they were previously planted. Water immediately. Space raspberry canes 25 centimetres apart within the rows, with rows one metre apart. Within three years, a continuous “hedgerow” will develop.

Do not allow the canes to dry out during their year of establishment. Thereafter, ensure they are wa-

tered from bud development through fruiting. They’ll require about 2.5 centimtres of water per week from first bloom to last harvest.

After August, irrigate only enough to prevent stress on the new canes (primocanes) that will fruit the following year. Once canes have entered dormancy in late fall, give them one final watering prior to freeze-up.

Because there is a direct relationship between the vigor and diameter of canes and fruit yield, it is important to promote vigorous cane growth early in the growing season. A spring application of a high phosphorous fertilizer such as 16-20-0 is recommended.

Control weeds through shallow (five to eight centimetres) cultivation. Remember, 70 per cent of the root system is within the top 25 centimetres of the soil surface and deep or careless cultivation may damage the roots. Avoid cultivation once fruit begins to form in mid to late June.

native to cultivation. Weedfree straw, post peelings, leaves and grass clippings will all do the job. The advantages of using mulch include moisture conservation, decreased daily soil temperature fluctuation, weed control and cleaner picking.

Apply the mulch in the fall following the first season of establishment.

Depending on the cultivar, raspberries may be grown in unsupported hedgerows or with the support of a trellis made of poles and wires. Trellises are used when canes are very tall, weak or simply to provide easier picking.

There are a number of reasons for pruning raspberries. If left uncontrolled, plantings can become jungle-like with fruit in the centre going unpicked.

Dutch Elm disease – What’s the big deal?

A large number of prairie towns and cities have urban forests that are made up of street or boulevard trees and park trees. What distinguishes an urban forest from a forest, is that an urban forest is made up of planted trees (both publicly owned and privately owned) and natural forests are not.

Several decades ago municipal parks workers, gardeners and urban foresters began greening our young prairie communities by planting trees. You have to give these people credit for their foresight because one does not plant a tree for today but for tomorrow and the future beyond.

In those days, urban forestry was new and, like so

many things in our societal development, the best decisions were arrived upon using the information available at the time. Consequently, the value of planting a diverse urban forest comprised of as many species of trees as possible was not, generally, considered.

Earthworms – good or bad?

There are many studies that show earthworm activity helps to form better soil aggregates, which in turn will help soil to support better plant growth with less compaction and erosion.

Just compare the difference that earthworms can make in the production of topsoil.

It might take 500 to 1,000 years for nature to produce topsoil in the absence of a adequate soil animal population. However, under favourable conditions, earthworms can shorten this process to as little as five years. This is because of the ability for earthworms to mix, till and build topsoil as they go about their daily business of burrowing through the earth.

The most common species of earthworm we would encounter is Lumbricus terrestris and it is amazing to learn the lowly earthworm has not been an inhabitant of North America forever. In fact, only after the last glaciations period have earthworms been introduced to our lands since European settlement.

Beneath lawns, earthworms are amazing. They help to improve water infiltration, which leads to a deeper rooted lawn. This of course helps lawns to better withstand periods of drought. Earthworms help to increase soil organic matter by bringing deeper soil closer to the surface. This helps to decompose leaf litter (which reduces thatch) and amends the soil without any effort on behalf of the gardener. If you can see these lumps from earthworms then you are very likely mowing your lawn a bit short. Try adjusting your mower height to ensure your lawn has lots of leaf tissue left after a mowing to help facilitate optimum growth. A lawn that is cut to about 2.25 inches is a healthy lawn. If these lumps make your lawn uncomfortable underfoot then simply rolling your lawn will alleviate this distress.

However, in a heavy soil earthworm activity seems to make all the problems of a clay soil a little bit worse.

The earthworm castings seem to be sticky, gloppy masses of close to concrete, not the type of soil conducive to plant growth. Over the years, I have been asked numerous times how to eradicate this pest. There is no instant, magical way to eradicate earthworms with a spray or drench. In fact, even trying to do so would be devastating to all living organisms in the soil that help make up the great diverse environment in the soil we cannot see. If you have a heavy soil and find earthworms are not helping, the best solution is to add lots of organic matter.

In effect you will be “feeding the worms” and giving them more organics to break down and improve your nonfriable soil. Use coarser organics like grass clippings and chopped leaves to provide lots of munching prior to becoming humus. Do not give up as this process will take some time, and lots of organic matter!

We as gardeners are always trying to improve the soil tilth, but it is always a short-term solution. Earthworms, believe it or not, are the best long-term solution for a healthy soil as they are able to: improve the soil structure, mix and till the soil, help in humus formation and increase the availability of nutrients in the soil. Next time you get concerned about too many earthworms, remember they are the army building your soil into a better entity, and perhaps instead of worrying about them, take your spade out to the garden, dig a few earthworms and go fishing.

that limited the species of trees available to use due to hardiness. Our growing zone in the Battlefords is considered Growing Zone 2b - 3a. Growing zones in Canada range from 9a in the Vancouver area to 0a in the arctic. These zones are based on plant hardiness and minimum temperature tolerated. The Battlefords is much closer in growing zones to igloos than it is to palm trees.

Life on the prairies is tough on people and tough on trees. The tree species selected for prairie urban forest planting, back in the day, consisted for the most part of American elm, Manitoba maple and Green ash. With good reason. Many decades later, urban foresters deal with the problems associated with, not only an aging urban forest, but an urban forest that is not very diverse in its makeup. The issue with this is, that if North Battleford’s urban forest has an elm population of 30 per cent of its total tree population, and there is a Dutch elm disease outbreak, the potential to lose 30 per cent of the City’s urban forest, shade canopy and aesthetic qualities becomes a reality.

It would be a completely different place with a completely different feel and look.

Dutch elm disease affects both American and Siberian elms. It is a difficult-to-control fungal disease. The fungus grows within the wood and specifically in the water carrying vessels of the tree.

If an elm gets the disease, the fungus plugs off the water carrying parts of the tree and the leaves in the upper portion of the tree begin to wilt. The main vector (carrier) of Dutch elm disease is a tiny bark beetle that feeds on elms. The feeding does no damage however if the beetle first feeds on a diseased tree and then moves on to healthy tree the beetle can infect the healthy tree.

cause the death of the elm trees in a community.

Transportation of elm firewood is a common way to spread Dutch elm disease (DED). The elm bark beetles that carry the DED fungus can be hiding under the bark where you can’t see them.

Stored elm wood is a perfect breeding site for these beetles.

The Society to Prevent Dutch Elm Disease (STOPDED) monitors annually for elm bark beetles using pheromone baited sticky traps throughout the province in municipalities, provincial parks and at Alberta/Montana border crossings. In the last years, beetle numbers have not only increased but the number of municipalities finding beetles is also increasing. For this reason we all need to be even more vigilant in following the DED prevention measures. Keith – The Saskatchewan government also has a beetle-trapping program as well.

Do not transport or store elm firewood at any time.

Dispose of all elm wood by burning or burying immediately. Keith – There are provincial regulations in Saskatchewan that makes it illegal to transport or store elm wood.

Do not prune elm trees between April 1 and Aug.

“Have the fans given up?” they asked in Toronto. “Your call-in shows must be toxic!” they guessed in Vancouver. “Are they calling for Chamblin’s head?” they quizzed in Edmonton.

In each case, the football types have had a dizzy grin on their face; a bloodthirsty smile. Having squirmed over the past decade while Canada’s team forged to the front of the pack as the league’s marquee franchise, those who don’t count themselves as Rider fans seem ever-so-eager to see the Roughriders and their fans now writhe in agony with each loss.

But that isn’t the case.

And while a 0-7 start has understandably had many fans calling for the firing of fourth year head coach Corey Chamblin, would you believe they’re in the vast minority?

In a poll at www.rodpedersen.com where respondents were asked if Chamblin should be replaced, an overwhelming 82 per cent voted with an emphatic “No!”. Only 13 per cent were in favour of a coach firing while three per cent were undecided.

field this week for the first time since their 30-26 loss in Toronto back on Aug. 8, it has to truly come with a fresh start.

Time after time in July, Chamblin said they were “0-0” in their own mind and each week was to be a fresh start. However time after time, the result was the same. It seemed the days between games were flying by too quickly and too many corrections had to be made. Injuries kept mounting and players were going in and out at a breathtaking pace.

Now having had a full week to reset and clear their minds, to re-assess and hopefully make one final trip back to the drawing board, the time truly is now for a new start.

Precious few changes were made over the bye week – at least that’s the way it appears from the outside – however the club announced the release of veteran cornerbacks Geoff Tisdale and Michael Carter over the weekend.

That could only mean one thing: “Guys are coming back,” 620 CKRM football analyst and former Roughrider lineman Luc Mullinder said while chomping down pizza with me Sunday evening at a downtown Regina eatery.

Changes to the coaching staff? Not likely. Although there have been plenty of calls for the removal of Chamblin as the team’s defensive strategist, if not for his ouster as head coach.

No, the vote of confidence given Chamblin by Roughriders General Manager Brendan Taman on Monday, Aug. 3 remains in place.

While Rider fans were frantically checking their smart phones four or five times per day during the bye week anticipating news of a firing, I was assured none were forthcoming.

Not on the bye week, not

this week and not any time soon.

While the rash of problems affecting this team have been well-documented – some self-inflicted while others designated by the football gods – precious few of the positives have been publicized.

The injuries have been overwhelming at critical positions. Some of those players are ready to come back. The team’s offense has been generally good while their special teams have been nothing short of spectacular. The injury bug seems to have flown away to infect other West Division teams (QB Drew Willy in Winnipeg and LB Solomon Elimimian in B.C. for instance), and no teams are running away with the division races.

In the preseason we annointed Calgary and Edmonton as the Conference heavyweights while the Blue Bombers and Lions were designated as the ones the Riders would need to nudge past.

The table seems to be setting itself for the next 11 games. Perhaps, truly, the “storm is behind them” as Corey Chamblin stated just a couple of weeks ago.

However, if the Roughriders continue to falter and this season drifts away, the tough decisions will still have to be made.

Those fall on the slender shoulders of the young, firstyear president of the team, Craig Reynolds.

“Ultimately I’m responsible for the overall success of this organization,” Reynolds told reporters May 5. “My philosophy is you hire good football folks and we’ve got two of them in the room here (Taman and Chamblin). You give them all the resources they need to be successful and you hold them accountable for that success.”

It remains to be seen how that will all unfold.

Richter wins two medals at Pan Am Games

Becky Richter, who was born in North Battleford but lives in Saskatoon, picked up two medals at the ParaPan Am Games over the past week.

She competed in three events, club throw, 100-metre and discus throw.

Not only did Richter set

a personal record in the club throw, her toss of 16-metres was enough to secure her the gold medal, edging out Rachael Morrison of the United States by 0.87 metres.

The following day, Richter took part in her other two events.

In the 100-metre, she came fourth with a time of 31.66.

In the discus event, Richter picked up her second and final medal of the games, when she claimed bronze.

Her 6.26-metre throw earned her the third place finish.

The medals add to Richter’s already impressive list of accomplishments.

Surely there are more to come in the future.

Canadian officials concerned over fentanyl use OTTAWA – Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada are concerned about recent reports of an increase in overdoses and deaths in Canada due to the illicit use of fentanyl.

A recent report from the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse indicates as many as 655 Canadians may have died between 2009 and 2014 as a result of fentanyl overdoses. Health Canada’s Drug Analysis Service labs

have also been detecting fentanyl more and more often in street drugs being sent to them for testing by law enforcement.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug used primarily to treat severe pain. Because of its strength and the potential for side effects and addiction, it isn’t intended as a first choice for pain management. It is available in Canada on a prescription-only basis, usually in the form of

a slow-release patch. However, reports suggest that illicit fentanyl in powder form is being abused, mixed with street drugs such as heroin, or being pressed into pills and made to look like legal oxycodone, before being sold on the street.

When used incorrectly or abused, fentanyl in any form can pose significant health risks. Fentanyl is a highly potent drug and is many times more powerful than

other opioid drugs. Abuse or misuse can lead to death, even in small amounts.

There’s no such thing as a safe street drug. Even a small amount of fentanyl can have very serious consequences when not used properly. When you’re dealing with a street drug, you have no idea how it has been made or what’s in it.

It’s also important that if you are prescribed fentanyl legitimately, that you

follow your prescription instructions closely, keep your supply in a secure place and dispose of the used patches properly.

Health Canada is working to support provinces, territories and law enforcement on responding to this issue.

This includes reviewing the prescription-only status of the opioid overdose treatment Naloxone on an urgent basis.

Health Canada and the

Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to monitor this issue and will continue to work closely with provinces, territories, law enforcement, and other stakeholders to help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

KINDERSLEY – Kindersley RCMP is currently investigating multiple suspected dangerous drug-related incidents in the Kindersley area.

Within the last month, Kindersley RCMP attended several calls for service where suspected drug overdoses, resulting in death, have occurred. The RCMP warn the public about the possible presence of highly dangerous drugs in the area.

Fentanyl pills (counterfeit Oxycontin) have been linked to several deaths in western Canada.

In the past, counterfeit Oxycontin have been green in colour with specific markings on them; however, they may now be available in any colour tablet.

RCMP remind the public the only safe medication to take is one prescribed by your physician and purchased from a pharmacy. There is no way to ever guarantee the safety of drugs that are purchased illegally.

The ring

When Mom and Dad were married, it was for forever. as I know it People kept the promise “’til death do us part” in that

Mom never removed her ring. It is a thin band of gold that is part of a two-ring set. She removed her engagement ring when baking bread, painting or any kind of dirty work. The gold band remained on her finger. Always.

Mom lost the diamond out of her engagement ring. At the time, it would have cost at least as much to replace the diamond, as it would to get an entirely new set of rings. The gold band remained where Dad had placed it all of those years prior. And they bought a new set of rings for her to wear, in addition to the original band of gold.

Eventually, Mom had a garnet put into her original engagement ring and kept it many more years.

There came a time when she gathered all of her adult children together. During our visit, she went through her jewelry box and gave each of us something that was precious to her.

She gave me her original engagement ring, the engagement ring Dad had given to her and placed on her finger. I was awe struck, to have been given such a precious gift.

We spoke of other things at the time, such as her wedding band. She specifically told us she wanted to wear it forever.

Of course this was her decision to make and hers alone. We all knew the story of the band of gold that was placed on her finger forever. And forever it would remain. We honored, respected and wholeheartedly agreed with her choice. We knew it was the right thing to do.

I love the story of that most simple band of gold that has remained on Mom’s hand from the moment the words “With this ring, I thee wed” were uttered.

Now, we live in a day and age where bigger is better when it comes to engagement rings. We live in a disposable society where marriages rarely last forever. There is much too much energy spent on the size of the diamond in the engagement ring. There is so much status given to a set of rings which may or may not stay on that finger forever.

When people talk of engagement and wedding rings, my mind always returns to the gold band Dad placed on Mom’s hand on their wedding day. A day that was not full of the pomp and ceremony of today’s weddings. A personal vow made in front of Dad’s brother and Mom’s sister. The promise they made was to each other. It was made for forever. They meant what they said. That simple band of gold symbolized their promise and that ring remained on Mom’s finger.

Remained, yes, past tense.

A few birthdays ago, I received a bulky card from Mom in the mail. I assumed she had found a unique card that explained the bulk.

I don’t even know if there is a word to describe what I felt when I opened her card and found her original wedding band enclosed. My heart cracked a little. That ring was hers.

Forever. And she entrusted “forever” to me.

It was the most precious gift I have ever received, second only, to her engagement ring that comes off my hand only for repairs.

I was already blessed and I knew it. This was almost too much.

There is no gem in this world I would trade for this simple band of gold and all it symbolizes to me.

OBITUARIES KIVIMAA: John Harold Kivimaa of Livelong passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the age of 82 years. Harold Kivimaa was born on a homestead at NE 35-53-19 W3 in the midst of the Great Depression. The family raised cattle, sheep and chickens, and sold mitts, socks, butter and eggs to help make ends meet. Finnish was the first language of the home. Harold attended Dexter School which was not far from the homestead. In 1944 the family moved to SW 1954-18 W3, which had been homesteaded by his uncle, Bill.

There Harold helped his family with the homestead, commercial fishing on Turtle Lake and cutting wood in the bush. In 1965, Harold began working in oilfield construction based in Fort St. John, BC. He often reminisced of his days as a “catskinner” operating heavy equipment in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. He would come back to Saskatchewan in the summers to farm. Harold had much involvement in municipal government, beginning as a Councilor of the RM of Greenfield and also serving as Reeve of Greenfield. He was also Councilor and Reeve of the RM of Mervin. He had a partnership lasting many years with Wilfred and Roy Hamm cutting, sawing and planing lumber. His connection to the forest included serving on the Divide Forest Advisory Council until his passing.

Harold married Darlene Rottacker on May 30, 1975, becoming stepfather to Kerry Rottacker. Harold and Darlene then had a daughter, Kelly, in 1978, and a son, Shawn, in 1980. His pride was in his family. Harold was predeceased by: his brother, Vilko; his parents, Felix and Ida; and his sisters, Minerva and Helvi. He is survived by: his loving wife, Darlene; his children, Kerry, (Stephanie) and two grandchildren, Kelly, (Phil), and Shawn; two brothers, Charlie, (Dorothy), and Jimmy (Irene); and numerous nieces and nephews. The Memorial Service for Harold was conducted from the Livelong & District Community Hall on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Daniel Gies officiating. Shawn Kivimaa, Kelly Kivimaa-Schouten, and Kerry Rottacker were the urn bearers.

All of Harold’s Family & Friends were the honorary bearers. Shawn read the eulogy, and Greg & Inga Sample and Wilfred & Darlene Hamm provided the music. Inurnment took place in the Livelong Cemetery following the service. Marshall’s Funeral Home Ltd, of St. Walburg, Saskatchewan administered the funeral arrangements.

KEYKO: Pauline Keyko (nee Herman) February 2nd 1924 July 31st 2015. It is with great sadness and sorrow that we say goodbye to our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother Pauline Keyko, who passed away on July 31st at the Hafford Special Care Centre.

Pauline was born in Carrot River in 1924 to Dora and John Herman. At the very young age of 14, Pauline left home to find work. She was successful in doing so, and worked for a farming couple for a number of years.

This prepared her well for the next chapter in her life. In 1942 she married Walter Keyko. They began their journey together farming in the Alticane district. They had many years of hard labour, milking cows, stooking, hauling hay and growing a huge garden; she prepared many meals for the large threshing crews that were there every fall. And the grandchildren could hardly wait to come to the farm to taste BaBa’s fresh baked bread. Mom was right alongside dad helping with everything, as well as raising a family of 7 children: Sonia, Elaine, Dave, Orest, Allan, Kathy and Carol. Mom and Dad retired from farming in 1977 and moved to Hafford. There they enjoyed the leisure life of gardening together, picking berries and taking a drive out to the farm.

They had 51 years of life together before Dad’s passing in February OF 1999. To keep herself busy Mom made hand-made quilts for each one of us. She enjoyed having company and playing Kaiser; she loved music and played the mouth organ. Mom also had many different word find books and enjoyed doing them as a past time.

Pauline is predeceased by her parents Dora and John Herman; husband Walter, infant son Meldon and daughter Kathy; sisters Kay, Mary, Olga and Lily; brothers Steve and Fred; and her son inlaw Victor Chmelnyk. At 91 years of age she was the last one to leave this world. Left to cherish her memories are: Sonya Chmelnyk and family (Mel, Corey and Audrey), Elaine (Nick) Kowalchuk and family (Lori, Nadine, Michelle and Darryl), Dave (Diane) Keyko and family (Della and Tyler), Orest (Colleen) Keykoe and family (Roxane and Kelly), Allan (Lynda) Keyko, Carol (Keyko) Crawford and family (Amanda, Tiana and Jayda), Gerald Adamus and family (Shelley and Cody); 16 great-granchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family sincerely thanks the Doctor and Nurses, all the staff of the Hafford Special Care Centre, Hafford Home Care staff, and health care aid that came to her home. Thank you for your loving care, you have done so much for our mom. You went over and beyond your call of duty and we truly appreciate it.

The importance of a broader bird’s-eye view When dealing with significant people and events, or important documents, there are times when we need to have as much detail as possible. Not to check the fine print on a document, for instance, could land us in great trouble later on.

There are other times, however, when a summary is useful. Give us the highlights, an overview of the main features. In written English, that is the role of the précis (prey-see), a French word meaning to cut short, or condense. Typically, a précis will be about one fifth the length of the original, summarizing the essentials, while seeking to maintain something of the author’s style.

Over the years, teaching the Bible in a church setting, in the college classroom and on a series of television programs, I’ve found that when we’re dealing with God’s Word, both perspectives are useful.

Scriptures, that each word of the original documents was “God-breathed” – the meaning of the Greek word “inspiration” in Second Timothy 3:16. Clearly, if God Himself superintended the writing of each word, then each is important. The Lord Jesus even declared the authoritative precision of each letter, and even the parts of each letter. (Matt.

hang things on, helping us to organize tools or other equipment. In a sense, that is what a summary of the Bible’s main points gives us.

How can we condense what is in God’s Word?

Boiled down to the bare minimum, all of the Bible is about three main things.

It’s a book about God, it’s a book about man and a book about the relationship between the two. That’s it. Open the Scriptures at random and study any verse you like. It will concern one or more of those three things.

The Lord Jesus several times declared that the Scriptures are about Him. “These are they which testify of Me.” (Jn. 5:39; cf. Lk. 24:27, 44) To use a technical word, the Bible is Christocentric. It centres on the Saviour and He can be found in some way on every page. There are prophecies about Him and symbols that relate to Him. There

are His appearances, His earthly life and work, His teachings and particularly, in the Epistles, explanations of who He is and what He means to us.

An American pastor named John Merritte Driver (1857-1918) summarized three pivotal points relating to the life and ministry of Christ, and wrote a hymn about it in 1892.

First, he dealt with the significance of the birth of Christ, when the shepherds heard the news, “There is born to you ... a Saviour,

who is Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2:11). “Wonderful story of love; / Tell it to me again; / Wonderful story of love; / Wake the immortal strain! / Angels with rapture announce it, / Shepherds with wonder receive it; / Sinner, O won’t you believe it? / Wonderful story of love.”

Then comes His sacrifice on the cross, and the call to salvation through faith in Him. (Jn. 3:16) “Wonderful story of love; / Though you are far away; / Wonderful story of love; / Still He doth call today; / Calling from

Calvary’s mountain, / Down from the crystal bright fountain, / E’en from the dawn of creation, / Wonderful story of love.”

Finally, there is His promised return to take us to the home in heaven He is preparing for us (Jn. 14:2-3).

“Wonderful story of love; / Jesus provides a rest; / Wonderful story of love; / For all the pure and blest, / Rest in those mansions above us, / With those who’ve gone on before us, / Singing the rapturous chorus, / Wonderful story of love.”

Squash in the alley Like many citizens of our community, the neighbour two doors south of us has a flourishing garden. It’s thriving so well, in fact, that vines have wormed their way through the fencing and established themselves on a narrow patch of ground between the wooden barrier and the concrete alley way. I wondered if the huge yellow flowers would survive the traffic that moves regularly between Fir and Hawthorn Streets but they have and now, in their place, summer squash are fattening.

I’ve been thinking about those squash and one in particular: it’s big and it looks so inviting to someone who is a connoisseur of the Cucurbita family. What’s most

interesting, though, is that is has remained untouched for a few weeks. My conclusion? Either our area of the community is as honest and integrity-filled as I chose to believe it is or there aren’t a lot of squash lovers around this part of town.

Musing aside, there’s a lot of nourishment resident in that gourd and I hope the right person (owner or otherwise) receives the full benefit of its goodness. As we consider the millions

of people around the world who would give anything for a meal a day, let alone three, I can’t help but grieve over the food that is wasted in this, our “land of plenty.”

I’ve tucked two valuable lessons into my heart and mind via that rambling vine: first, may my life, like that of the Old Testament hero Joseph, provide godly nourishment to those around me.

“Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall.” (Genesis 49:22) Then, there is no greater privilege than to garner my own soul’s nourishment from Jesus Christ, the Source of all our strength.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.” (John 15:5)
