Husky case adjourned

Volume 110 No. 33 Staff Husky Energy’s first court date facing provincial and federal charges in connection to the 2016 oil spill was a brief one.

Counsel for Husky, and provincial and federal prosecutors in the case, appeared

The charges are against two Husky entities. Both Husky Energy Inc. and Husky Oil Operations Ltd. face eight counts under the federal Fisheries Act and one count under the federal Migratory Birds Convention

Act. Husky Oil Operations Ltd. also is charged with one count under the provincial Environmental Management and Protection Act. The charges stem from the spill of 225,000 litres of oil from the Husky pipeline near Maidstone into the North Saskatchewan River in July, 2016.

Our Collective Threads on display at the WDM Staff As part of the Canada 150 celebrations, the WDM has produced an exciting travelling exhibit to commemorate this historic anniversary and it is presently on display at the North Battleford branch Our Collective Threads: Saskatchewan People in Canada explores the diverse history of the Saskatchewan people through

artifacts from its exceptional textile collection.

From the most exquisite evening gowns to ordinary work clothes, the WDM has collected clothing from many aspects of life in Saskatchewan. The clothes we have worn tell many stories about everyday life in Saskatchewan and our place in Canada.

The exhibit showcases 12 garments and accessories for visitors to learn about

our many identities.

“We hope that visitors see themselves reflected in the clothing, whether it reminds them of something their grandparents might have worn to more contemporary pieces we wear today or clothes we wear for certain types of work in Saskatchewan like potash mining,” says Curator Liz Scott. “Given the delicate nature of garments it is difficult to display them.

This exhibit gives visitors a chance to connect with some of our most personal artifacts captured in beautiful new life-size photography. It’s a great way for us to share these incredible stories while still preserving and caring for the textiles.”

The exhibit is open at the WDM North Battleford until June 17 and will travel through to October 2018 to the other WDM locations.

A sheepskin vest, or keptar, came with Ukrainian immigrants Partyn and Zanahira Wlasichuk and their family in 1913. Their 11-year-old son George wore the vest when the family moved to the Veregin district of Saskatchewan.

Bowls for Kids Sake

Last weekend was the annual Bowl for Kids Sake event at Gutters bowling alley. Teams of bowlers came out to take part in glow-in-the-dark bowling all day, all to help raise money which will go towards the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Battlefords. Bowl for Kids Sake, however, is a nationwide effort happening at bowling venues across Canada. There were plenty of prizes on offer, with toys and stuffed animals going to the kids who take part, and plenty of gift cards available for the adults to win. Photos by John Cairns

HUB issues ongoing

Herb Sutton presented his monthly community safety report last Monday to city council, and there was no shortage of items he had to deal with on his watch over the past month.

Among them was the HUB table and the muchanticipated “reboot” of the organization.

He reported to council a meeting took place the previous Thursday of both the HUB table and HUB steering committee; some facilitators from Regina were also included.

The indication from Sutton was that he was “very pleased about the candid conversations” about what was working and what wasn’t. Some clarifications were made of issues that were “significant trouble spots” the HUB table was encountering.

The most significant news, according to Sutton, is that they have all agreed to come back and meet again for another session for a half day.

No date has been set, but the indication was that it would look at action plans going forward.

Facilitators from Regina would be back again for that meeting.

For now, the HUB has continued without a permanent chair, with the departure of Tonya Browarny from the role last month.

The chair role has been filled on a rotating basis since then, but Sutton noted no permanent chair has stepped forward yet.

As for the work of the HUB table, it continues to meet every Tuesday and Thursday and situations continue to be dealt with.

The other major news from Sutton’s latest report stems from the work of the SAGE (Safety Acceptance Guidance Empowerment) committee.

There had been plans for Federal Provincial Territorial (FTP) Collaborative Approach meeting for May 2-3, but it may be postponed indefinitely.

might get in the way of one of the group’s primary objectives: building relationships with Indigenous people on public safety initiatives.

Sutton explained the SAGE group has made Indigenous participation a priority. One thing the group had come to understand in talking to Indigenous leaders was the need to get away from the “paternalistic and proscriptive” approaches of the past, which have been

ineffective.

The group also came to understand the May workshop that they were planning “had really fallen into that category of being paternalistic and proscriptive,” said Sutton.

The recommendation from the SAGE committee was to postpone the planned FPT Collaborative Approach meeting, Sutton said.

Instead, Sutton indicated they plan to focus their energies instead on governmentto-government relations and on creating the coalition – the model bring together federal, provincial, municipal and First Nations governments on community safety initiatives. In connection to those efforts, a coalition design workshop was held on Feb 27-28.

Mayor Ryan Bater said, “It’s really exciting what we could accomplish for this area if we can align all of the governments in a way where we can start to get results for the people who live and work here.”

Seven in 10 social media users in Saskatchewan have witnessed racial/ethnic bigotry on social media In a new independent poll conducted by Insightrix Research Inc., Saskatchewan residents were asked how social media has impacted their lives.

Sixty percent (60 per cent) of Saskatchewan social media users indicated it had both a positive and negative impact on their lives. Another 14 per cent felt it didn’t change their lives, 11 per cent indicated it had positively impacted their lives, six per cent indicated it had negatively impacted their lives, four per cent said they never use social media, two per cent were unsure and three per cent have quit using social media altogether.

Despite indicating social media has had some positive impact on their lives, more than one third (34 per cent) feel the behaviour of others on social media has negatively impacted their lives.

In fact, 59 per cent of Saskatchewan social media users feel social media has led them to have a more negative view society. Another 22 per cent indicate it has had no impact on how they view society while only seven per cent thought it has led to a more positive view of society.

Another 12 per cent indicate they are not sure.

Men (65 per cent), compared to women (53 per cent), are more likely to indicate social media has led them to have a more negative view of society, as are those aged 18 to 34 (64 per cent) and 35 to 54 (63 per cent).

Older Saskatchewan social media users aged 55 or older were more likely to indicate social media has no impact on how they view society (30 per cent).

Witnessing Online Harassment

Overall, more than half (55 per cent) of Saskatchewan social media users indicate they have seen someone, other than themselves, harassed on social media.

This number is higher among those aged 18 to 34 years old (76 per cent) and 35 to 54 years old (59 per cent).

When asked what types of harassment they have witnessed others experience on social media, more than two thirds (70 per cent) report witnessing racial harassment, 59 per cent report harassment based on political affiliation, 59 per cent report sexist/gender-based harassment, 57 per cent report body shaming, 56 per cent report religious intolerance, 55 per cent report threats or intimidation and more than one half (51 per cent) report witnessing homophobic/sexuality-based harassment on social media.* Those Saskatchewan social media users aged 18-34 years old are more likely to report having witnessed revenge porn (15 per cent), harassment of disabled persons (40 per cent), impersonation/catfishing (36 per cent) and sexist/gender-based harassment (68 per cent).

Those with children in the household are more likely to indicate they have witnessed threats and intimidation (61 per cent) on social media.

Victims of Harassment

Two in 10 (21 per cent) Saskatchewan social media users report having once been a victim of harassment on social media.

Those aged 18 to 34 years old (36 per cent) and those

of indigenous ancestry (32 per cent) are more likely to indicate they have been a victim of harassment on social media.

When asked what types of harassment they have experienced, 47 per cent of Saskatchewan social media users indicate threats and intimidation, 34 per cent indicate body shaming, 28 per cent indicate sexist/gender-based harassment and 24 per cent indicate harassment based on political affiliation.* *Respondents were given the option to make multiple selections; therefore, percentages total more than 100 per cent.

Potential for Discontinuation

The negative impact of social media appears to be taking a toll on Saskatchewan social media users, with one third (34 per cent) indicating harassment on social media has made them at one time want to discontinue the use of one or more forms of social media altogether. Another 9 per cent of Saskatchewan users indicate they have already discontinued at least one form, and 57 per cent indicate they do not plan discontinue.

Research Details

A total of 804 randomly selected SaskWatch Research panel members participated in the online research study between February 5 to February 8, 2018. Quotas were set by age, gender and region to match the general population of the province; therefore, the data did not need to be weighted. Since the research is conducted online, it is considered to be a non-probability proportion sample; therefore, margins of error are not applicable. However, the margin of error can be estimated to be ±3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20 for questions answered by all respondents (n=804).

Cannabis 101 readies employers for legalization

Navigating the new world of legalized cannabis in Canada was on the minds of local business people and employers at the Don Ross Centre on Wednesday.

They were there for the day-long seminar called Cannabis 101: Cannabis and the Workplace - Realities, Rights and Responsibilities.

It was designed to provide hard information on what the July 1 legalization of cannabis across Canada will mean for employers and businesses going forward.

This was the fourth such seminar on the topic put on by the Saskatchewan Chamber as well as WorkSafe Saskatchewan, with seminars held in Regina, Saskatoon, and the previous day in Prince Albert. A few more are scheduled for elsewhere in the province.

The seminars have taken on a similar format featuring experts in labour and employment law and in business consulting.

The morning session in North Battleford focused on legal aspects of cannabis with Jon Danyliw, lawyer with Miller Thomson providing that presentation.

It included information on Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, and on the Saskatchewan Cannabis Framework that was recently released by the province.

safety issues — an issue of importance to employers who are required by law to ensure their workplaces are safe.

He noted the importance of making sure businesses have up-to-date workplace occupational health and safety policies in place, ones that recognize the changes on cannabis use.

“If you don’t have policies in place, now is as good a time as any to put those in place,” said Danyliw.

He outlined what was needed for those Occupational Health and Safety policies to be effective.

The program needed to be in writing, be workplace specific, have commitment from the employer and senior management, have input from the works assign clear responsibilities and accountabilities, have an evaluation mechanism, and be available to employees

and effectively communicated.

He noted penalties for failure could range to up to $1,000 in fines from Occupational Health and Safety workplace inspections.

Maximum fines for serious injuries or death run at up to $500,000 for individuals and up to $1.5 million for corporations under current legislation.

Another legal issue Danyliw touched on was the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, and particularly situations where employees have a doctor’s note authorizing their use of medical cannabis.

Employers have a duty to accommodate those employees using medical cannabis, under the human rights legislation.

Conexus Credit Union has donated $100,000 to the Saskatchewan Hospital New Beginnings Fundraising Campaign. Necessary medical equipment and furniture for the new Saskatchewan Hospital will be purchased with this gift. The new hospital is currently under construction in North Battleford.

The Quality of Life rehabilitation centre in the new facility will be named the Conexus Credit Union Quality of Life Centre in recognition of the donation.

“Conexus has deep roots in our communities and a rich heritage of giving back. We’re excited to partner with the Saskatchewan Hospital on this special project that will benefit so many,” said Eric Dillon, CEO. Quality of Life programming provides opportunities that enable patients to engage in supervised and individual goal-directed activities in a safe and supportive work setting. The rehabilitation programming focusses on life skills training that helps prepare patients to live independently such as cooking and baking, making and selling crafts, serving at in-hospital functions, socializing and participating in shopping and recreational excursions to North Battleford and beyond. “We are thrilled to have Conexus Credit Union join us in this campaign,” said Corinne Bernier Delainey, New Beginnings Fundraising Lead. “Their $100,000 donation will go a long way in improving the lives of the people who come to Saskatchewan Hospital for care.”

Danyliw also discussed the issue of what to do about employees who come forward with substance dependency issues.

This also falls under the employers’ “duty to accommodate” under the Human Rights Code, but he emphasized every situation had to be dealt with on their facts.

“What might be appropriate for one job might not be appropriate for another job,” said Danyliw.

Danyliw touched on aspects of worker privacy and noted employers were entitled to the “prognosis, not diagnosis.”

He also discussed issues of testing for impairment, drug testing in the workplace, determining impairment in the workplace, and recognizing impairment and how to respond, and employee obligations.

The afternoon session was presented by Janice Decelles, a senior level consultant with MNP LLP. She and others at the seminar acknowledged many things were still unclear about the coming legalization.

“To be sure, things are a bit hazy”, said Decelles,

who emphasized they were providing at the seminar the best information on what they knew right now.

“We’re at the start of our new normal,” she said.

Her session, which focused on human resources policy development, was designed to be hands-on and interactive for participants in the session. She outlined the typical elements you would find in an HR policy, as well as optional elements. Policy “do’s” and how to add cannabis to a HR policy were also outlined.

Decelles also spent time in the afternoon discussing incorporating the “duty to accommodate” into policy.

For participants, the meeting was an eye-opener about their own responsibilities and the consequences they could face if

they weren’t ready for legalization.

Chamber president Terry Caldwell believes it was a worthwhile session for those who were there.

“I think it’s really important for employers to get educated on what’s going to be happening in the future,” said Caldwell.

He also acknowledged there were still a lot of unknowns about cannabis legalization.

“Some of it is very vague about how it’s going to be delivered to the public in the near future.

I think the more you get educated about it the better off you’re going to be as an employer.”

Caldwell also indicated the Chamber may put on at least one more cannabis informational event to further help members be ready.

Sheila Parker: Dedicated to Coaching Everybody has a STORY

It was about a year and a half ago when North Battleford Water Doves head coach Sheila Parker was approached by Synchro Saskatchewan to have her name submitted as part of the annual Saskatchewan Sport Awards that are hosted by Sask Sport Inc. With her busy coaching schedule, Parker had completely forgotten about the award until February when she was told that she would be the recipient of the female coach dedication award at a ceremony in Saskatoon on March 22.

“It wasn’t on my radar at all so it came as quite a surprise to me,” Parker said. “I had given them my background information right after Synchro Saskatchewan asked for it, but I didn’t really know where things were at with that.

“Right after we finished the Saskatchewan Winter Games, I got a call from Synchro Saskatchewan that I would be getting the award and I was really excited. I wasn’t expecting it at all and it was quite an honour to receive that award.”

Having competed in synchronized swimming in Edmonton for 12 years, Parker began her coaching career in 1986 shortly after she retired from competition.

“I had previously been involved in helping the handicapped and around the time I retired a position became available for a new

program that was being put together by Synchro Alberta and Special Olympics Alberta,” Parker said.

“It kind of fell into place for me to get started there as coach and I loved it so much that I kept on doing it.”

Parker coached in Alberta for a decade before she moved to North Battleford in 1995 to begin work with the Water Doves program.

“I helped to start the Special Olympics program in Red Deer, I coached a bit in Whitecourt and I was all over the province doing outreach clinics,” Parker said. “There’s definitely a lot less travel involved now that I’ve been coaching here.”

After spending a year as an assistant coach, Parker became the head coach for the Water Doves in 1996 and has stayed in the position ever since.

“During that time, it’s been really important for me to keep up my professional development,” Parker said. “Over the years, the sport keeps progressing so it’s important to stay up to date.

“There’s new techniques that are coming out and there’s so many different styles of music that have been used in routines since I started coaching. You have to stay as current as possible to keep the athletes involved in the process.”

Parker is at the Battlefords Co-Op Aquatic

Centre five times a week to help with coaching, but she spends just as much time away from the pool focusing on the Water Doves.

“I’m at the aquatic centre about 10 hours a week but I’m working from home that much before hand with prep work and on choreography,” Parker said. “The planning, the choreography and putting together the music takes a long time, as you work on that for the whole season with the swimmers.

“We start swimming in September, but we don’t work on the routines until November as we spend the first few weeks focusing on getting the athletes properly conditioned and making sure they’ve learned all the new figures. Those routines are pretty much tweaked on throughout the rest of the season. We see what works and what doesn’t in practice, plus we get feedback from the judges at competitions and that allows to see where we need to improve.”

Having been involved as a head coach for over two decades, Parker has had a front row seat to see just how much synchronized swimming has grown in Saskatchewan.

“If you look at our provincial championships, which will take place in Regina in April, we’re looking at having 300 swimmers for the weekend,” Parker said.

“That’s quite a growth from a decade ago, as I think the field wasn’t even

half of what it is now.

“After each Summer Olympics, we see the numbers rise a bit but it’s important for us to keep the sport in the spotlight for a longer period of time and not just every four years. We try to do that here with publicity through the media, going into the schools, being involved in parades and a host of other events to help keep things going.”

One of those events took place in February as the Water Doves were the host team for the Saskatchewan Winter Games.

“It was a little bit crazy at time with all of the prep work that went into it, especially when it came to making sure the volunteers knew what was going on during the week, but everything ran smoothly so we were extremely happy with how it all went,” Parker said.

“With the huge number of athletes that were here from out of town, it was important for us to make sure that that experience was an enjoyable one.

From the feedback we got, it was a great event for everyone that came to North Battleford.”

Thanks to her tireless work, Parker has been rewarded with a major coaching accolade, but the honour isn’t what keeps her coming back to the pool.

“Working with the athletes is far and away the best part of what I do,” Parker said.

In between those events, the club will hold their annual year-end water show at the Battlefords Co-Op Aquatic Centre on Friday, April 27 at 6 p.m.

Connaught first licensed MindUP school in Sask Submitted

A Community Teaching Initiative of Nursing students (ACTION) have been placed at Connaught Elementary School for their fourth and final year of the SCBScN program through the University of Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

The current clinical cohort of nursing students has been busy implementing mental wellness strategies within the community.

It is evident that mental health is a rising concern for our youth.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (2018), mental illness is increasingly threatening the lives of our children, with an estimated 10-20 per cent of Canadian youth affected by a mental illness or disorder.

Without adequate cop-

ing skills, the risk of developing mental illness increases (Stanhope, 2017).

Thanks to Rob Rongve with the Community Foundation and Randy Iverson for their generous donations, along with the support from Principal Jay Nichol and Vice Principal Jenifer Kahl of Connaught School, a program called MindUP has been implemented.

MindUP is a curriculum aimed at building personal coping skills, resilience and focus through the four core pillars: Neuroscience, Positive Psychology, Mindful Awareness and Social-Emotional Learning (MindUP, 2017).

On March 19, a facilitator was flown in from Vancouver to introduce the MindUP program to the faculty of Connaught School as well as other faculty from the Living Sky

OBITUARIES SIMPSON: After fighting the good fight for almost a year, Frank Simpson passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, March 19, 2018 four days short of his 82nd birthday. Left to cherish his memory are his son Craig (Sue) of Calgary, grandsons Scott of Fort McMurray and Connor (Izzy) of Penticton; siblings Clarese (Jack) Pickering, Jean Button and Ron (Gloria) Simpson; In laws Rae Sheldan, Betty Brownell, Diane Lessard, and Jim (Millie) Brownell as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Joan, in 2015, brother in law Stan Button, brother in law George Lessard and niece Diane Balkwill. Born and raised in Milestone, Sask. Frank joined CIBC after high school and worked at several locations across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario. It was during this time he met Joan and they were married in Meota in February 1963. The following year their son Craig was born. Later Frank worked at the Sask hospital where he remained until his first retirement in 1993. He then went on to work for the health district, BTEC and the Source and finally retired for good in 2010. After Joan’s passing, Frank sold the house and was one of the first to sign on for Battleford West Place. He couldn’t wait to get in and was so proud of his new place. Dad also did some traveling, going to Scotland and Texas with Ron and Gloria. Frank loved crossword puzzles, reading and keeping up with current events. He was a great card and game player and when he was scorekeeper, coincidentally he always won. Frank was always very active in the community, most recently volunteering with organizations such as Sask Hospital, Sask Baseball Hall of Fame, Gateway Music Festival and the Hillcrest Singers to name a few. He also helped organize Sask Hospital Reunions, high school reunions and various legion activities. He was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in several positions at the branch, provincial and national level, culminating in serving as Provincial President. Thanks to the staff at the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic for providing professional and compassionate care. Thanks to the Saskatoon Cancer Lodge for a warm and caring environment you do great work and deserve more recognition. Thanks to the staff at Harwood Manor, although the stay was brief, the care was top notch and we highly recommend your facility. Thanks to the staff at BUH for making Frank’s last days comfortable. Special thanks to the gang at Battleford West Place for the fellowship and assistance over the past two years. Finally, a huge thank you to the Strueby clan, who “adopted” Frank after Joan passed and who were there for him when we were unable. Your kindness cannot easily be repaid. Venus graces the evening sky The moon is just past full phase at the beginning of April. Did you watch for Jupiter nearby in the early morning of the 2nd before sunup? If you looked straight south you would have seen it. Saturn and Mars are both within a few degrees on the morning of the 7th. On the 14th, Mercury joins the thin crescent moon in the early morning – a tough observation so close to sunrise and with just a sliver of moon visible. The moon is new on the 15th, which presents an opportunity to view the very old crescent just before new on the 14th, and the very new crescent on the 16th. Venus is right beside the new-ish moon on the 17th. Aldebaran is occulted on the 18th, for viewers in the west of Canada and the northern parts of Asia, Russia, and Scandinavia. On the 23rd and 24th, respectively, the moon is near the Beehive Cluster (M44) and Regulus, the bright star in Leo,

Mercury is at inferior conjunction (in front of the Sun), gradually emerging in the eastern morning sky at month-end. The speedy planet reaches greatest elongation west on the 29th.

Venus will spend all spring and right through summer gracing the western evening sky as the Evening Star, outshining every other object (except the sun). We don’t actually see the planet, just the tops of its thick clouds, which reflect the sun’s light very effectively. The planet has

been admired throughout the ages as a thing of beauty, inspiring many lines of prose and poetry. It is only in the last 50 years or so that we’ve come to know the planet as one of the harshest places in the solar system, with horrific high temperatures, an extremely thick atmosphere, and sulphuric acid rain.

What things are truly the necessities of life?

When we speak of our needs, we mean that which we believe is necessary for us to live and be happy. Sometimes, however, needs can be confused with greeds!

To be greedy or covetous is to have an excessive craving for a thing – often something that’s not good for us, or maybe not even our right to have.

But if we are speaking of true needs, we can identify many of them – such as the air we breathe.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) made a study of the subject. In 1943 he wrote a significant paper about it, defining five levels of needs, forming a kind of pyramid.

At the base of the pyramid were physical needs – for food, sleep, and so on. The next level described needs such as safety and security, the third, needs relating to love and friendship. The fourth level listed the need for the esteem and respect of others.

Finally there was, he said, the need for “selfactualization,” by which he meant our need to fulfil our potential and live meaningful, fulfilling lives.

Though others have adapted Maslow’s theory, it remains and interesting way to describe our needs as human beings. And,

though the author was not a Christian, what he said is compatible with the Bible’s teaching.

God’s Word draws a line between needs and greeds. “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have” (Heb. 13:5). The Lord also recognizes that we have certain basic needs. “Having food and clothing, with these we shall be content” (I Tim. 6:8).

The problem of focusing on physical needs (or greeds) and failing to deal with much more important things is illustrated by the Lord’s message to a church in the city of Laodicea.

“You say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,’ and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” (Rev. 3:17). Though the people were materially wealthy and self-satisfied, they were spiritual paupers!

So what is it we need in spiritual terms?

Whatever it is, the Lord can supply it. “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (II Pet. 1:3). Here are three areas to consider.

First, there’s the need for personal salvation.

through faith in Christ.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3). “As many as received Him [Christ], to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those

who believe in His name: who were born...of God” (Jn. 1:12-13; cf. 3:16).

Second, as believers, we have the need of God’s continuing care.

We need His love and friendship, His sustaining grace (II Cor. 12:9), daily

guidance (Ps. 23:2), and protection (II Tim. 4:18).

And finally, we have the need for satisfying and fulfilling service for the Lord (Gal. 5:13).

“If anyone serves Me [Christ]...where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honour” (Jn. 12:26) .

Bruins dominate North Stars at Civic Centre

Over the last couple of years, the Battlefords North Stars have handed teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League some lopsided losses at the Civic Centre.

On Saturday night, they found themselves on the wrong side of one of those affairs.

In the second game of a semifinal series, the Estevan Bruins scored four times in the first period and never looked back as they took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven affair thanks to a dominating 7-2 performance.

“We were trying to do too much by ourselves out there and we panicked,” North Stars head coach and general manager Brandon Heck said. “I’m sure x’s and o’s played a part in it as well, but it was a bad start as a whole and we never recovered.

“The guys know what happened tonight and I’m hoping the message that

they take from this is that it’s a wake-up call as we head to Estevan for the next two games. They need to buy in for how we want them to play.”

The loss was the worst the North Stars have suffered since a 7-1 setback in Edam against the La Ronge Ice Wolves in January 2016 and it was their most lopsided playoff defeat since they dropped a 9-0 decision to the Kindersley Klippers in game one of the 2015 quarter-finals.

Although the Bruins didn’t quite reach the eight-goal mark they had against the North Stars in a wild 8-6 affair at the Civic Centre in November 2016, they became the first team to put four goals into the North Stars net over the course of 20 minutes since they scored a quartet of unanswered goals during the third period of that regular season triumph.

Saturday’s seven-goal showing was also the most the Bruins have scored in a post-season game since

a 9-2 win over the Yorkton Terriers in game three of the first round of the 2008 playoffs.

“We’re doing all the little things right at the moment,” Bruins forward Tanner Manz said.

“We’re putting pucks in deep, pushing hard with our forecheck, creating turnovers and getting shots on net. We’ve also had [goaltender] Bo [Didur] playing huge for us at the other end of the ice and that’s helped us out a lot.”

The Bruins dominated the opening frame with a 16-6 advantage in the shot department, which included Manz finding the back of the net on the first shot of the night just 18 seconds into the game.

Another goal by Manz and one from Arthur Miller would spell the end of the night for North Stars goaltender Taryn Kotchorek, as he gave up three goals on eight shots in 11 minutes of work as he made his first start of the playoffs.

that point to get a spark going,” Heck said.

Joel Grzybowski took over in between the pipes but the Bruins would extend their lead to 4-0 as Kaelan Holt scored on a goalmouth scramble at the 16:56 mark.

Layne Young would blast home a shot for the North Stars on the power play late in the opening frame, but the damage had already been done by that point.

“After we got the first two goals, we really put them on their heels,” Manz said.

“We just kept putting the pressure on them and we kept pulling ahead. It was pretty awesome to see us playing as well as we did tonight.”

Manz turned in his best performance in a Bruins uniform Saturday as the rookie forward got his first career SJHL hat trick to help his team improve to 6-0 in the playoffs.

His linemate Jayden Davis, who was a teammate with Manz for two seasons with the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Generals, also had a career night with a four-assist outing.

“Both guys are gritty and they play fast, which is a good mix when you get to the playoffs,” Bruins head coach and general manager Chris Lewgood said of the duo, who are joined on their line by another former Generals player in Tanner’s twin brother Tyson.

“With their speed, they can generate a lot of offence and they found a way to do that tonight. What impressed me the most though was that they were able to do that while going up against different lines.”

Miller scored twice for the Bruins, who also received goals from Michael McChesney and Kaelan Holt.

Didur turned aside 27 shots in the win, with his only blemishes coming on Young’s first period marker and a power play goal by Parker Smyth in the final frame.

At the other end of the rink, Grzybowski made 22 saves in nearly 49 minutes of relief work To make matters worse for the North Stars, they lost the services of blueliner Levi Kleiboer late in the third period with an apparent left leg injury after he made a hit on a Bruins forward.

“I haven’t had a chance to see him yet, so at this point it’s too early to say how bad it is,” Heck said following the game.

A night earlier, the Bruins brought an end to the North Stars 16-game playoff win streak as they picked up a 5-3 victory in the series opener.

“We just weren’t ourselves tonight,” Heck said.

“There were some players that did some good things, especially late in the game, but it’s tough to come back from three goals against a team like Estevan.

“We let them have too many odd-man rushes in the second period, but we made some adjustments in the third period to our forecheck to fix that issue.

With that said, we turned the puck over too many times.”

The loss was the first post-season setback for the North Stars since a seasonending double overtime defeat to the Flin Flon Bombers in game five of the 2016 semifinals.

It was a well-balanced performance from the Bruins, who were outshot by a 35-22 margin by the North Stars.

They received timely saves from Didur, especially in the third period when he turned aside 14 shots, and also scored three times on the man advantage.

“We saw a little bit of everything from our guys tonight,” Lewgood said.

“We know that Battlefords is capable of quite a lot out there, so all week long we preached about focusing on the things that we could control and embracing our strengths as a team.”

Miller scored twice for the Bruins, while Zach Goberis had a goal and an

assist on offence and blueliner Jake Heerspink had a pair of helpers.

“It’s just one game but we’re really happy about getting things started here on the right foot,” Goberis said.

“We stepped up our level of play tonight even more than where it was at against Kindersley when we swept them in the quarter-finals.

Having lost to the North Stars in the semifinal last year, we know that we have to be on our toes and fight hard in every single shift against them.”

Holt and Jake Fletcher rounded out the scoring for the visitors as Didur turned aside 32 shots.

Young and Cole Johnson paced the North Stars up front with two assists each.

Kleiboer, MacGregor Sinclair and Brad Girard all found the back of the net, while Joel Grzybowski made 17 saves.

The series shifted to Estevan Monday evening for game three, with the final outcome of that contest not being determined as of press time.

Affinty Place will play host to the fourth game of the semifinal Tuesday night.

A win by the North Stars in either meeting with the Bruins in Estevan will guarentee a fifth game Thursday at the Civic Centre.

If necessary, the series will head back to Estevan Saturday for a sixth game and a seventh and deciding contest would be held in North Battleford next Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the Nipawin Hawks hold a 2-0 advantage over the Humboldt Broncos in the other semifinal matchup after a pair of wins in Nipawin over the weekend.

Michael Grant scored the game-winning goal in double overtime Friday in a 3-2 triumph, while Brett Harasymuk and Grant Baetsen had a goal and two assists each in Saturday’s 5-3 victory.

The series resumes in Humboldt Tuesday.
