6 strategies for strong mental health Every year, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) shines a light on mental health during Mental Health Week. In 2019, the event will take place from May 6 to 12. Mental health is about far more than just whether or not you have a mental illness. In fact, mental health encompasses everything pertaining to the psychological and emotional wellness of human beings. And, like physical health, mental health can be improved upon by adopting specific behaviours. Here are six strategies that’ll help you stay mentally fit. 1. CONNECT Healthy relationships are an important part of feeling mentally well. Enjoy the company of your friends and family members and let old grudges go.

2. BE ACTIVE Exercise can reduce stress and improve your mood. Try taking a yoga class, lifting weights or simply going for a walk to improve both your physical and mental health. The more active you are, the better you’ll feel. 3. BE MINDFUL Mindfulness is about paying attention to where you are, what you’re doing and how you’re feeling. Take time to savour your food, notice your breath and be aware of your thoughts. 4. KEEP LEARNING Learning can improve your self-confidence and change the way you think about yourself. Opportunities for acquiring new knowledge come in many forms, from formal education to picking up a

5. GIVE BACK TO OTHERS Giving back to your community is rewarding and can provide you with a sense of fulfillment. Volunteer with an organization that means something to you or join a community group involved with a cause that’s close to your heart. 6. PRACTISE SELF-CARE Regularly set aside time to do something that makes you feel good. Take a bath, eat a wholesome meal or spend some quiet time outside. This year during Mental Health Week, think about ways you can improve your mental well-being and consider using some or all of the above strategies to be more mentally fit.
