WHEN THIS MAGAZINE went to press, our team of writers, editors and sales executives was still working from home— conducting interviews over the phone, meeting through Zoom, transmitting files remotely and proofing pages online. Weddings are quite a celebration in south Louisiana, and for a decade we’ve provided coverage of some of the most inspirational nuptials around. So in the midst of our social distancing, we edited pages and pages of parties packed with people, celebrations from before COVID-19 shut down our ability to gather. Meanwhile, in the midst of the pandemic, many brides and grooms who were scheduled to get married this spring changed plans. They exchanged vows in intimate ceremonies then received well wishes from family and friends who drove

elissa Palfrey wasn’t even in her teens when her fascination with wedding dresses began. She spent hours flipping through bridal magazines and sketching out her own ideas inspired by the styles she saw inside. And though she could hardly imagine it then, her childhood dreams came to life last April when she walked down the aisle at Houmas House Plantation wearing a gown of her own design. Palfrey’s pursuit of a career in fashion led her to the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design after she graduated from St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette. “To say that their program was a challenge is an understatement,” she attests. “I did not

have a history of sewing and patternmaking, and I am very fortunate those courses were provided in our curriculum. Having an idea and being able to sketch it out is one thing; it is entirely another to transform it into a wearable design.” After graduating from SCAD in 2009, Palfrey returned to Louisiana and accepted a position as a designer at Sky Blue Clothing Studio, a small Lafayette boutique that focused on reconstructing vintage garments. “My time there really sharpened my sewing and construction skills,” she says. “It is amazing what you can learn by taking apart clothes.” After the shop closed in 2014, Palfrey moved to Baton Rouge, where she now designs commissioned garments for clients while also working in

fashion retail. She has also customized wedding dresses for brides—changing details and adding elements like lacecovered sleeves to purchased gowns. The process of handembroidering lace into illusion netting for those sleeves would become a spark of inspiration for Palfrey’s own wedding dress when her longtime boyfriend, Joshua Newville, proposed. “The general idea for my wedding gown had been tucked back in my mind for at least a decade prior to our engagement,” Palfrey says. “I knew that I wanted my dress to have romantic lace details, a slim bodice and a flowing train. I also loved the idea of a sleeve detail that left my shoulders exposed.” Once she finalized the sketch for her own gown, Palfrey

visited Promenade Fine Fabrics in New Orleans to procure the perfect combination of fabrics— beaded lace, French Chantilly lace and four-ply silk. She created pattern pieces for the dress’s many elements, including a corset, skirt lining, bodice and sleeves. Before construction began, she teamed up with local seamstress and patternmaker Carol Keto—“who has countless years of experience altering wedding gowns,” Palfrey says—to work on translating the dress to three dimensions. It was a meticulous, multi-layered process that took a total of six months, even with both women working. “I didn’t catalog my time, but my estimate is that I spent at least 400 hours working on my dress,” Palfrey says. “By working together, we were able to

share our knowledge and skills with one another, which was extremely rewarding.” By the time of Palfrey and Newville’s wedding day on April 13, 2019, she couldn’t wait to show her loved ones what she had labored on for so long. “My husband’s reaction, along with my family and friends, made the creation of my gown even more memorable,” she says. “While my friends reacted with ‘I can’t believe you made this!’ my husband reacted with ‘I knew you could do it! It’s incredible.’” With her wedding day now behind her, Palfrey reflects on all she gained from the lengthy dress design and construction process— so much more than a single garment, no matter how special. “I’ve gained a close friend and mentor through the process, as well as achieved greater faith in my design and sewing abilities,” she reflects. “And by designing my own dress, I fulfilled one of my lifelong goals and now have it as an heirloom to pass on.”

scare with her father that contributed to her decision. “My mother-in-law suggested we do a surprise wedding instead.” With an announcement party already set for February 2, Anna Katherine and her fiancé, Sterling Gladden, decided to cancel their original wedding plans they had for later that spring and instead host a surprise wedding reception at the home of their party hosts. The result was a unique celebration that each of their nearly 300 guests will remember forever. But before Anna Katherine threw on her wedding gown and

stepped out to shock friends and family, she walked down the aisle earlier that morning in a simple white cocktail dress, with her grandfather watching from the front pew. In front of just a few family members and friends, Anna Katherine and Sterling quietly exchanged vows, becoming man and wife without the fanfare of a packed church or even a wedding party. “Having the ceremony like that made it so much more personal,” explains Anna Katherine, whose grandfather passed away four weeks after her wedding day. “It wasn’t for

COVID-19 and the preventative measures surrounding the virus took hold of the spring 2020 wedding season, demanding quarantine-friendly big days. he week of Christmas 2018, Anna Katherine Culotta got a call that changed everything. Her grandfather, who had spent the past few years battling prostate cancer, wasn’t getting better. The bleak prognosis, which gave him just months, meant that Anna Katherine’s original May 17 wedding would likely not include one of the most important men in her life. “On the drive home, I called my mom and told her I didn’t want to have my wedding without my grandfather,” she recalls, also noting a health

age of a global pandemic, weddings aren’t about how many guests, how lush the florals, or how big the cake. Instead, what’s truly important— family, love and a life together—is plunged into the spotlight. Suddenly, the sacrament is all the more authentic. “When the order was put in place and it was clear that our wedding wasn’t going to happen as we had planned, I had a hard time accepting it at first,” admits Melissa Currier Landry, who was married April 18 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church to her fiancé, Alex. “But in the end, I realized that it was just about us two. It’s not about everyone else or everything that goes into a wedding. It’s just about the love that you share.” “For us, it was a bright spot in the chaos of this pandemic,” adds Liz Wintz Richoux, who got married on April 18 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church to her fiancé, Ryan. “To be honest, we originally wanted something small. When we found out a wedding ceremony would still be possible, we were so excited.”

And while the COVID-19 couples are facing a more delayed reception than Anna Katherine and Sterling Gladden, each couple hopes to continue the celebration in the coming months. Turning their sights to the fall, they are planning to pick up where they left off with their original reception plans, with their dream vendors and all of their friends and family present. However, much like the experience that Anna Katherine and her family had with her grandfather on her big day, the postponed receptions of pandemic-affected newlyweds will likely carry more significance than could have ever been anticipated. t was the butterflies that drew me in. There were dozens of them flying around the garden that would end up becoming my wedding venue. I saw them first on my iPhone screen, tiny pixelated bursts of color flitting in and out of the camera frame. Their yellow and orange wings glinted in the sun on the spring afternoon the garden’s manager took me on a video walk-through. I’d always thought I’d need to see my wedding venue in person, to feel its energy, in order to have that moment where I’d decide it was “the one.” But the garden’s energy burst from the screen. I could almost feel its warm sunshine through my phone. It reminded me of my childhood, when I’d wander my neighborhood with a yellow dollar-store butterfly

net in hand, hoping for a closer look at a monarch. Younger-me, I thought, would be ecstatic if she knew she’d grow up to get married in an idyllic setting like this. Even though my fiancé, Adam, and I wouldn’t be able to travel to see the venue in person together until the summertime, we decided to book it. On the Fourth of July, we got to explore the Miami Beach Botanical Garden in person and finally imagine how our January wedding would unfold. We’d have the entire garden to ourselves, so we wanted to make the whole evening about being outdoors. It would be intimate and immersive. We envisioned a ceremony with our guests’ chairs surrounding us in a semicircle. During dinner, we’d dine under string lights and the

we recounted why we’d loved each other then, now and forever. Everyone tells you your wedding day will go by so fast, and you won’t remember half of it. This is definitely true. We turned to Angela DiVincenti Babin of Angela Marie Events to take us through the year with inspirational florals and settings for bridal events and beyond. Since chinoiserie is a timeless classic, Babin chose a blue and white watercolor-style tablecloth in a chinoiserie motif for this summer seating. It acts as a neutral from which the citrus-hued flower arrangement pops. A gauzy napkin knots casually over the formal plates.
