THERE ARE FEW things quite so exciting to receive in the mail as a wedding invitation. From the moment you spot that elegant envelope in the mailbox and see your name written in scrolling script, you know there’s a guaranteed great time in your future. Every aspect of the invitation presentation itself is designed to please the senses, from the inner envelope to the little sheet of tissue paper to the thick cardstock. You might gently peel away a wax seal embossed with the bride’s monogram, or untie a shimmering sheer ribbon, or feel the texture of letter-pressed words requesting your presence at a celebration that’s likely a few months away. Tacked to a bulletin board or affixed to the refrigerator, this little goodie will serve as a proclamation and a promise until the big day arrives. The suite of pretty papers surrounding a wedding doesn’t stop at the invitation, of course. From save-the-dates and watercolored venue maps to ceremony programs and reception menus, each item carries a thread of a theme chosen by the bride and groom to express the mood and aesthetic of their wedding day.

Beginning in early 2020, however, a new kind of wedding card suddenly began landing in mailboxes around the Capital City and well beyond: the postponement notice. Events that had been in the works for months were shut down in one fell swoop by the COVID-19 pandemic. Uncertainty reigned, and daring to set a new date became a dangerous game. But after the initial stay-at-home orders were lifted, postal carriers once again started delivering happier news in the form of invitations with not only new dates but often new details in keeping with local health and safety guidelines. Armed with gallons of hand sanitizer and glitterencrusted masks, wedding coordinators and couples carefully navigated the new normal. And the results were so much more than just make-do! These rescheduled and reimagined events were arguably even more special than the initial plans, often incorporating more personal touches, more intimate dinners and more meaningful connections. In these pages, you’ll find a mix of weddings from before and during the pandemic, with varying sizes and settings. But they all have one thing in common: no matter what the challenges, these couples found their own perfect ways to celebrate their union with the ones they love most. Consider this your formal invitation to enjoy them all! Ashley Andrews and Taylor Dodge made the most of their multiple mailings by memorializing them in this wedding-day photo.

FORCED TO GET CREATIVE WHEN COORDINATING PRE-WEDDING EVENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC, LOCAL PLANNERS FOUND FRESH IDEAS THAT OFFER NEW INSPIRATION FOR COUPLES

beautiful celebrations in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic during the past year. “The challenges we faced in the event industry as a result of COVID were challenges that I’d never imagined,” says Victoria A. Roberts of VAR Events. “My team and I were constantly checking the CDC’s website and watching the governor’s press conferences for updates on how we could proceed with our events.” Restrained by new parameters put in place by local and state officials, Roberts and other local planners began

to think of the opportunities instead of the obstacles. Leslie Campbell of Leslie Campbell Weddings and Events executed a flower-filled al fresco rehearsal dinner in the ruins of a St. Francisville estate. Blakeley Santos of Belle Amour Weddings + Events kept the fun flowing at a socially distanced “Bubbles and Brews” shower for a bride and groom. For Taylor Quintini of Weddings Taylor Made, adding elements like live entertainment helped make pre-wedding parties even more festive. And Roberts imagined a bridal shower where closest

friends celebrated in an exuberant and colorful setting. Where couples might have felt that carrying on with their parties was impossible, Roberts says she believes new possibilities actually opened up. “Money that might have otherwise been spent on a long guest list could be used to invest in intricate details for an intimate gathering,” Roberts says. ometimes the best ideas arise from the most challenging circumstances. Think Apollo 13, the moon mission that nearly resulted in tragedy until NASA engineers worked out a real-time fix to a desperate situation onboard the spacecraft. Planning a party during the months leading up to a couple’s wedding doesn’t usually involve the same sort of life-or-death stakes, but the health and wellbeing of guests was in fact a critical part of the equation as Baton Rouge event planners plotted how to throw

Most venues had guest count limitations, so HOSTING AT A PERSONAL HOME OUTDOORS was the best option for this wedding pre-party. Face masks were provided at the sign-in table, and hand sanitizers were placed throughout the party for guests to use. SPACING OUT TABLES AND CHAIRS was also something we did to help keep people socially distant yet still able to converse with each other. Most FOOD ITEMS WERE SELF-SERVE so there wasn’t any touching from person to person. For alcohol, TAP TRAILERS like this one from Sip 225 have been such a hit during the pandemic due to them being self-serve for guests as well. They are adorable and double as a great photo op! We made the best out of the cards we were dealt and were still able to provide a lovely couple’s shower to celebrate the most special time in this bride and groom’s life.

It has been incredibly difficult to plan events due to the capacity and social-distancing restrictions. For rehearsal dinners this year, we sat everyone with their IMMEDIATE FAMILY or CLOSE FRIEND GROUP. Couples also tried to keep their EVENTS OUTDOORS. Our biggest priority was always keeping our clients at ease. We did that by creating several BACKUP DESIGN PLANS and ordering CUSTOMIZED MASKS, sanitizer and other things to help keep our clients and guests feeling safe and joyous about their big celebrations.

We have made modifications such as having hors d’oeuvres for a cocktail hour packaged beautifully in INDIVIDUAL BOXES. We also changed up a reception-style welcome party to a SEATED EVENT, while bringing in LIVE ENTERTAINMENT to help create a more lively atmosphere and enhance the guest experience. But as Angela DiVincenti Babin of Angela Marie Events proves in the two wedding inspiration scenes shown here and on the following pages, it’s hardly a sacrifice to host your nuptials in an al fresco setting—especially when that setting is the stunning and uniquely Southern backdrop found in our own backyards. LOOKING YOUR BEST on your wedding day means more than just adding an extra coat of mascara and trading your pale lipstick for something bolder. According to Baton Rougebased makeup artist Kalie Montz of Little Black Brush, prepping to look pretty starts well before the wedding day itself. Here are some of her top tips for the bride, the motherof-the-bride, and any other members of the wedding party: AT LEAST A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE WEDDING: • Brides should always do a trial run with a makeup artist. You might even want to try multiple artists, so allow yourself plenty of time to schedule test sessions. • After the trial, wear the

makeup for as long as you can that day. This will help the artist know what products stayed in place the best and the longest and which ones did not, and they can adjust accordingly. It will also let you become more comfortable with the look and will make it easier for you to express your thoughts on any changes for the wedding day AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING: Although you want to look groomed and “glowy” before the big day, there are some things you will want to do or avoid at least one week before the wedding: • Stop retinol products. They cause dryness and peeling, and even the best moisturizer and makeup products cannot

Chemical peels take time to fully exfoliate, and dry skin can linger. • Get that last brow and lip waxing. Makeup will not hold onto freshly waxed skin. • Avoid dermaplaning. Skin that is overly exfoliated will be slick and appear shiny or oily. Makeup does not stay well on slick, smooth skin. • Use hydrating lip balms. Many longwearing lip products have drier formulas that do not look good or stay well on top of flaking or chapped lips.

lobbyist father, Bud Courson— one half of the Courson Nickel Governmental Relations and Issue Management business— had, at 27, become the youngest person in the nation to hold the title of first assistant to the commissioner while working for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, and later served as a fundraiser for Governor Mike Foster. No wonder, then, after a childhood spent surrounded by government officials and with her own career as executive assistant to the chief of staff for Governor John Bel Edwards, that Chancely chose to hold her

ceremony on the grounds of the Old State Capitol: as close to a fairytale castle as a patriot can get in Louisiana. “Out of all the places in the world, the new State Capitol has always been my favorite, so it was only appropriate that my fiancé picked its front steps to pop the question,” says Chancely. “But now that I’m thinking about it, there’s definitely some irony in the fact that we got engaged at the new State Capitol and married at the Old State Capitol.” The building’s Old St. Louis brick and stained glass, along with an abundance of

candelabra and white roses, set a classic tone for the big day. Chancely’s father Bud personally coordinated nearly every detail, transforming the grassy grounds of the Old State Capitol into a glowing, forested hideaway in the middle of downtown. More than 800 plants and trees—including boxwoods, ferns and azaleas—found their way through Galvez Plaza to act as succulent sentinels, lending privacy and beauty to the festivities. “Pretty much every aspect was inspired by him and the different events he has planned over the years,” says Chancely.

utting a finger to the wind in 2020 meant detecting a world’s worth of prohibitions. Don’t touch that. Don’t see them. For the good of the planet, stay inside. And we listened. We took precautions. We worried. All the while, though, life carried on. Babies were born, birthdays were celebrated, degrees were conferred. And couples, of course, still fell in love. For Chancely Courson, that art of loyalty and dedication had been a family affair long before her October 2020 wedding to Brad Ducote. Her

“I actually don’t think people realize how much we did ourselves. For example, Brad and Dad made the planters all around the front of the Old State Capitol. They got the lumber and built the boxes, which we all sanded and painted. We helped haul plants, filled jugs with hand sanitizers, packaged masks... My dad was even late to our ‘first look’ because he had jumped in the shower only 20 minutes before, making sure everything was ready down to the last possible minute.” This was the true magic of the evening: that the elaborate setup—which included the couple’s personalized crest projected onto two dance floors, a bus-stop-turned-bar and another bar made completely of ice, a 7-foot-long grilled alligator courtesy of Drago’s,

lit-up cocktail tables, pearlencrusted high-top sneakers for the bride, silver décor to match the nearby downtown library, transportation via horse and carriage, and more—came not from the vision board of a designer but from the imagination of family. Chancely credits her day-of wedding coordinator, Caroline Broussard of Iris and Oak Events, with helping to ensure a smooth evening, beginning with Chancely making her surprise appearance at the Old State Capitol doors as Lauren Daigle’s “Rescue You” played and culminating in a private dinner for two for Chancely and Brad before they let loose with family and friends. In keeping with the evening’s personal focus, the groom’s cake—created by Les Amis Bake Shoppe along with the

wedding cake—was a red velvet cake formed in the shape of an American flag to honor Brad’s grandfathers’ history of military service. The cake was presented alongside a painted wooden flag that Brad created himself. Other special touches throughout the festivities included the Ducotes’ dog Beignet joining the ceremony as a “signbearer”—“I loved her first”—and a display of multiple generations of family wedding photos inside the Old State Capitol. “Our dear friend, Frank Rusciano, officiated the wedding, which also helped make it so personal and unique compared to any other wedding I’ve ever attended,” says Chancely. “The quirky, fun stories make it so intimate, and I think every guest left feeling like they knew me and Brad even better than they did before.”

And though her father’s former employer, Governor Mike Foster, passed away just a couple of weeks before the wedding, former first lady Alice Foster sent Chancely a congratulatory message about the beauty of the ceremony’s decor, reminiscing about inaugurations Bud had once helped plan. “I can see his ideas in this beautiful setting,” Mrs. Foster wrote to the newlyweds. “Please give him a hug for me.” More than the event’s frills and fancies, however, Chancely cherishes the fact that she was able to celebrate with family in a time so marked by separation. “As beautiful as everything was, at the end of the day, the best part was just getting to marry my best friend,” she says. “I know Brad feels the same way. Everything else pales in comparison.”

catching up on old times. The priest, after all, was Rev. David L. Toups, her father’s cousin, who had baptized Shelby as a child—his first dispensation of the sacrament after being officially ordained into the priesthood. He was present again for her first Reconciliation and first Communion when she was a student at Our Lady of Mercy, so for Shelby to stand in that very church again last December, clad in white at the top of the aisle—this time with her now-husband Landon Flowers—seemed only natural. Rev. Toups (now Bishop Toups)

was once again presiding over the ceremony, his first wedding since his August promotion to bishop of a diocese in Texas. On the evening of the ceremony, Christmas trees glittered against the whiteand-black palette of the wedding party’s attire, and the cake at the Country Club of Louisiana reception mimicked the black-and-gold elegance of the wedding invitations. All of these little details proved that a consistent theme is a classic condition for outdoing the ordinary, even in the midst of so much welcome familiarity. With a tuxedoed usher

hand-delivering invitations on a silver platter to guests in Baton Rouge, the affair promised to offer a unique experience from the get-go. But even a stranger picking up the wedding program for the first time could be privy to the evening’s personal touches. In the margins, special footnotes denoted the significance behind the couple’s favorite hymn verses and Bible passages, shared funny anecdotes, and expanded on the history of the relationship. And the song Shelby picked for her walk down the aisle? Let’s just say you’ve never heard it at another wedding before.

hen a Catholic couple becomes engaged, the first step toward wedding planning usually involves a series of meetings with a priest to ensure that all parties turn to the same page regarding their approach to conflict resolution, spirituality, finances and whatever else may pop up during the course of their relationship. A good first step, even if the interview process can be a bit nervewracking for couples who don’t have a long, personal friendship with a priest. For Shelby Toups, though, it was more like

“My sister asked one of her friends in New York to compose the song—a mashup of Pachelbel’s ‘Canon in D’ and Elvis’ ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love,’ the latter of which we’d picked as our first-dance song for later in the night,” says

Toups. “It was such a lovely way to tie those big moments together.” Creating a narrative for guests to follow was a crucial step toward togetherness, especially during a holiday season still dominated by social

distancing among even the closest friends. “It was important for us to personalize the program to better involve the guests,” she says. “Not everyone there necessarily knew Landon and me super well, and not everyone

was Catholic, so we hoped it would be a fun way to make everyone feel welcome.” Shelby, who graduated in May with her master’s degree in business administration from LSU, and Landon, who is finishing a project with Turner

Industries in Corpus Christi, are now residing in Texas after having spent a significant period of time apart because of work demands. They plan to settle back in Baton Rouge when Landon’s work completes in mid-summer.

Melissa Hall & Calvin Fabre After a short scooter ride to view street art in downtown Austin, Texas, Calvin Fabre and Melissa Hall became engaged on March 7 in front of the iconic scribbling on the wall of Jo’s Coffee. Melissa, a counselor and former clinical director at Veritas Counseling Center, earned her master’s degree from Covenant Theological Seminary of St. Louis. Calvin is the founder and president of software company Envoc and a seven-time winner of the Best Places to Work in Baton Rouge Award. Envoc is the innovator of LA Wallet, the first legal digital driver’s license app to launch in the U.S. with more than 650,000 Louisiana users. The couple will be married at First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge, where they were introduced. A special reception will take place June 12, 2021, at City Club of Baton Rouge. After a honeymoon in Big Sky, Montana, the couple and five of their seven beloved children will reside in the Glenwood subdivision of Baton Rouge.

Morgan and Bryant are both graduates of Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University. Morgan is currently working on her master’s degree in nursing at her alma mater and will be a family nurse practitioner after graduation. Bryant, who is employed with Peak Performance Physical Therapy, is pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy. The couple became engaged October 6, 2020, during a beautiful sunset at the LSU Botanical Gardens. Their wedding will take place in April 2022.

Having seen Dylon at church in New York City in 2019, Catarine began to pray and asked God if Dylon might be the one. Months later, Catarine’s beautiful Brazilian smile and bright spirit caught Dylon’s attention … and their love story began. A graduate of The Dunham School in Baton Rouge and Coastal Bend College in Beesville, Texas, Dylon has made his home in New York for the last three years as a model for Wilhelmina Models. He is also pursuing a music career. Originally from Brazil, Catarine has made her home in New York for several years, and is currently pursuing a degree in cardiovascular sonography at Eastwick College in New Jersey. The couple will wed on November 20, 2021, in Baton Rouge and will make their home in New York.

Price McNamara of Baton Rouge, and she is in her fourth year of medical school at Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans. Stephen, who practices law in Baton Rouge, is the son of Dr. Dawn Vick, and Alicia and Dr. Randy Vick of Baton Rouge. After eight years of dating, Stephanie was still quite surprised! Stephen set the scene by arranging candles and flowers at the end of a pier over a beautiful cypress lake. He proposed, and she said yes. The couple’s wedding will take place on October 9, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church in Baton Rouge.

Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Lee Sherman Sr. joyfully announce the engagement of their daughter Elizabeth Jane Sherman of Baton Rouge to Raymond Carl Kleefisch III of New Orleans. Elizabeth is the youngest of four children, and the first girl born in the Sherman family in 113 years. Ray is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Carl Kleefisch Jr. The couple met in 2018 as students at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans. They became engaged September 14, 2020, while on a windy walk along the New Orleans levee amidst Hurricane Sally when Ray’s enthusiasm and excitement overwhelmed him and he could wait no longer to present her engagement ring and ask for her hand in marriage. They plan to wed in June 2021, at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church in New Orleans, where they have worshipped together and where their hearts first realized they were meant for each other. Elizabeth and Ray are each pursuing a Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree and anticipate graduation in May 2022. Elizabeth plans to seek a specialty degree in pediatric dentistry. Ray is an officer in the United States Navy and has committed to serve the Navy as a dentist.

Here Come the Brides THE KOREAN WAR had been going on for a year when inRegister’s predecessor magazine, The Register, released this nevertheless ebullient weddingsthemed issue in the summer of 1951. Following a letter from a Baton Rouge-native Air Force officer who had been called into service while pining for a

return to normal life in south Louisiana, the issue turned its spotlight to happier news: the engagements and weddings of local couples. For Blanche Town and Wally Gladney, the months leading up to their matrimony included parties like an “all-pink affair” that featured arrangements of blush-hued

gladioli and roses, three heartshaped pink cakes, and even pink-tinted mayonnaise— though the article did not state what the mayo was used for (one would hope it wasn’t the cakes!). Many more paragraphs were devoted to the recent wedding of Robert Kleinpeter and Rachel Williams, who

wore a satin and Chantilly lace gown sewn by her sister and a sapphire-and-pearl pin given to her by her grandmother. “Below Mason and Dixon’s line,” the article’s author wrote, “the announcement of a betrothal is the signal for much entertaining.” Some things never change!
