was in my bedroom—at my writing desk used as a bedside table now turned into a home office space complete with full-size monitor and rolling office chair (don’t ask how I got them)— when I heard the slow, loud crack and then the crash. It jolted me right out of my writing. I looked to the large floor-to-ceiling windows that frame our backyard just in time to see a huge limb hit the ground. My husband was wielding a chainsaw on a pole amidst branches that once were attached to a tree outside my window. It was a Thursday morning, quarantine time.

We are not handy people.

We are not the kind of people that install light fixtures or change the oil in our cars. We don’t know how to lay tile in a new bathroom or unclog a drain without chemicals. We have tools, but they are rarely used, and they are more for show. Such as, “Do you have a screwdriver?” “Why yes, would you like to see the neat drawer in which I keep them?” There are times when I have been crafty and resourceful, and there are times my husband has been industrious around the house. But we aren’t DIYers much, even though DIY is cool. We aren’t cool like that.

Until now.

It all started about the second week of the social shutdown, when time itself seemed to take a slow train toward the coast and we were left to ourselves.

Left to ourselves, our family, our unknown future and our four walls. At first, the walls looked like they always did: picture frames in place and such.

Doorways to walk through to the next room. Then, on further inspection, everything looked off. The cabinets and baseboards needed a good, hard scrub.

The walls themselves had finger marks on them. The windows (Lord, the windows!) needed cleaning. And once we cleaned the windows, we looked out them

and noticed a brown film covering every outside surface.

Enter the power washer.

There is nothing quite as satisfying as power washing a driveway or a patio after the funk of the winter has left a layer of grime only the spring sun can unmask. It takes hours (hours, I tell you!) but when the brown water starts to run to clear, and you see the concrete and the brick under the layer of grime, you feel deeply satisfied. Like a home improvement expert.

That’s when other small projects started to get tackled. Overhead light bulbs were replaced. Chipped paint was painted. An overgrown tree had its lower limbs trimmed, cut up and hauled away. All without me asking.

I thought I had seen it all, when a few hours after the tree incident, I was called into the kitchen.

“Prepare to be very surprised,” I was told, and I braced myself. I’m not big on surprises. I walked into the room, and the cabinet doors under the sink were wide open. I looked at my husband, curious if he had organized the cleaning supplies. That would be nice.

“I replaced the garbage disposal,” he said. I died right there. Dead. Seriously, we do not do things that involve modern mechanics. We don’t do plumbing.

“Oh. My. Gosh!” I screamed. “I cannot believe it!”

My middle schooler and her friend froze at the front door in fear. “I am so excited!” And just to prove it worked, he turned on the switch and I heard the soft purr of satisfaction that only comes with home improvement. The middle schoolers relaxed.

I know that this stay-at-home order has been horrendous for many. And the health issues and the economic battles will be ongoing long after we attempt to return to some kind of normal. But this season of social distancing has changed us all. It has made us appreciate the small moments. The quiet contentment. The boredom that has led to creativity and brilliance.

My house has a newly installed garbage disposal, and I will count that as a minor modern miracle. Kind of makes me want to pull out my screwdriver and get to work.

face coverings have included everyone from delivery drivers to ICU nurses to police officers, and local organizations and companies including the Junior League of Baton Rouge, P. Tree Textiles and Community Coffee have donated supplies.

“I had forgotten how much I enjoyed watching something homemade come together,” Broussard says. “Seeing the pure happiness when our recipients get the handmade masks has renewed that sense of purpose.”

Elsewhere around our area, others are also stepping up to their sewing machines to create much-needed masks for healthcare workers and the general public. As of press time, the “Mask Angels” of St. George Catholic Church had created 4,700 masks for use in long-term care facilities, rehab centers and other facilities in need. Bridal gown designer Pedram Pasha Taheri’s Pedram Couture began producing masks topped with designer lace fabrics, while

fancy pillow purveyor Rebecca Vizard of BVIZ Design launched a line of Fortuny fabric-covered masks benefitting area charities. Raising Cane’s team members have shifted from cooking to sewing for hospitals, and even salad dressing maker Hanley’s Foods is offering new “Lettuce Smile” mask/bandanas with proceeds going to Baton Rouge General Hospital.

And around the city, scores of stay-athome seamstresses are quietly cranking out masks, one yard of fabric at a time.

For Broussard, even as her mask-making efforts wrap up, she is already planning to sew for other good causes. “I’ve been recruited for several groups, including Ryan’s Case for Smiles, a nonprofit providing whimsical pillowcases for children during their stays in the hospital,” she says.

“I’m happy to report the friendships—my ‘COVID connections,’ if you will—as well as the use of my sewing machine shall remain for the duration.”

imee Broussard hadn’t even touched her sewing machine in more than three years when she accepted an emailed challenge in late March to start stitching cotton masks.

She made her first one for a nurse at an Alexandria hospital, and when she posted her creation to social media, Broussard was asked to join Sew You Care, a nationwide volunteer movement of at-home mask makers.

Just days later, Broussard—a food blogger and cookbook author who also serves as inRegister’s food columnist—had become the captain of the local chapter of that group, coordinating the creation and distribution of thousands of masks around south Louisiana and beyond. Broussard’s own home-stitched masks—made of colorful themed fabric and packaged with cheery notes—have served to bring a bright spot to a world now often filled with distressing news. Getting Creative

Ann Connelly Fine Art is making art part of the COVID-19 relief equation with weekly online art auctions benefitting local charities. The idea originated with a collaborative piece by local artist Winifred Reilly and Berlin native KEF, who together created a one-of-a-kind papier mâché sculpture that raised $3,400 for St. Vincent de Paul’s food programs. The gallery is moving into the second month of fundraising, this one focused on arts organizations after April’s emphasis on addressing immediate community needs. “This whole experiment has been the perfect example of connecting to our humanity through the arts,” explains Connelly. “We have so many creative people in our city and they deserve our support.” Each week’s work goes live online on Wednesday, with bidding happening between 3 and 4 p.m. on Friday. annconnelly.com

This Baton Rouge native and LSU graduate, now the president of the Atlanta-based pharmaceutical company Ennaid Therapeutics, is working to determine if an antiviral drug called ENU200 could be used to treat mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. If clinical trials are successful, the drug could be made available to patients within the next eight months. Harrison’s company uses its artificial intelligence-based drug discovery platforms to develop antiviral drugs.

First, she was Louisiana’s Teacher of the Year. Now, this Brusly High School educator is one of the 50 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize, presented by the Varkey Foundation and UNESCO. Eckert’s accolades stem from her success with a problem-based learning approach and from her work helping school districts recruit quality teachers. The winner of the $1 million prize will be announced in London in October.

Theatre Baton Rouge is offering a welcome change from pandemic panic by bringing audiences everywhere some fictional drama without leaving home. For the first time ever, the organization will put on a fully virtual version of one of its seasonal shows. n a sunny afternoon last month, photographer Jenn Ocken pulled up to the front yard of the Johnson family only to see a white linen couch occupying a prominent place in the manicured grass. Was this a case of quarantine-induced madness?

The dangerously pale piece of furniture had been carried onto the lawn just moments earlier in anticipation of Ocken’s arrival.

And to top it all off, the family was now inviting their two dogs to join them on the cushions.

For weeks, Ocken’s days have been filled with equally intriguing sights, as she travels the city photographing families as part of The Front Porch Project BR, which she kickstarted with friend and Moxey sales and marketing vice president Aimee Supp after the stay-at-home order went into effect in March. The concept was simple: Ocken would take quick, free portraits of families in front of their houses; all the families had to do was pledge to support a

local company or cause.

From kids’ art projects to bikes and barbecue pits to cakes and yard decorations, the ways in which families have chosen to express themselves in the photos are as diverse as the causes and businesses the images go toward supporting.

“The project is about paying it forward,” explains Ocken, who operates her own local small business, Jenn Ocken Photography.

“We’re asking that people post the pictures, tag and review local businesses, buy whatever amount they can, or donate to a cause that’s important to them. This helps keep money flowing and gives greater visibility to local small businesses who need help during this time.”

The free family photoshoot idea came from similar initiatives that Supp observed online at the start of COVID-19 restrictions.

However, in Baton Rouge, it has grown much larger than just one photographer and a few families.

Within the first week, Ocken

was overwhelmed with nearly 900 requests for the outdoor shoots.

To meet demand and spread the love, Ocken and Supp decided to enlist the help of other local photographers in order to serve as many families—and, thus, businesses—as possible. Now with some 21 participating photographers and over 3,000 Facebook group members, the initiative has grown from documenting families and their front doors to capturing the faces behind the local businesses the project aims to uplift.

“There is a power in seeing faces,” says Supp of the new Store Front Project. She notes that owners don’t necessarily need a physical storefront to be photographed for the initiative.

“We want to shine a light on the local businesses that make Baton Rouge so special. By sharing mentions and stories, we hope to encourage and support the business owners in this uncertain and stressful time.”

According to both Ocken and Supp, the project has already had

a positive impact on stores and restaurants in the area, spurring increased online shopping and takeout orders. What’s equally powerful are the connections that have been made throughout the community, despite mandatory distancing.

In the #TheFrontPorchProjectBR Facebook group, all of the images are shared, allowing strangers and old friends alike to join in celebrating special family moments from births to graduations that have been forever marked by the pandemic.

“It’s been great to see the gratitude that people have—what it means to them to have their family photographed during this time,” Ocken says. “I’ve been telling myself, ‘Everything always works itself out.’ It’s easy to believe that when I see people rising up together to give back to the community that gives them so much.” thefrontporchprojectunited.com thestorefrontprojectunited.com

A

s much as social media conceals, it also reveals. Behind expertly edited photos, when people take to their feeds, they share pieces of themselves with their friends, family and audience, even if it is only slight. Usually, these digitally catalogued moments depict joyous times: weddings, anniversaries, holidays, birthdays. However, it’s no secret that there’s much more going on behind the scenes. Chelsea Borruano’s goal is to bring that to light.

Amidst a feed of Photoshopped smiles and filtered backgrounds, the business development director with MESH posted about her struggles with mental health and her continued journey to happiness. “The response was crazy,” she explains. “So many people thanked me for making them not feel alone. It made me realize how many people aren’t getting the help they need.”

While May is Mental Health Awareness Month, this year the topic carries even more weight, as COVID-19 has taken hold of normal life. With people living in nearly constant fear and anxiety about not only contracting or spreading the virus but also the fate of their jobs and futures, Borruano says it’s never been more important to reach out and support one another.

Borruano decided to go a step further in her position as executive director of the organization by enrolling in New York University’s online graduate program for counseling. As she moves toward a new degree, her goal is to bring the best practices and resources to the local community.

“I’ve been looking into how best we can talk about mental health and how to go about counseling in a way that doesn’t go against people’s beliefs and cultures,” she explains. “There’s a stigma that comes along with the way that therapy is set up. We can change that.”

The You’re Not Alone Project team also recently launched T-shirts and other merchandise bearing the slogan “Let’s Talk About It.” In addition, “we recently partnered with Aetna for free mental health trainings,” says Borruano, who also organizes no-charge meetings with local health professionals with the help of her team. “In order to change the conversation, it’s important to give people accurate and helpful information.”

But beyond the necessity for a new point of view, the very existence of a conversation is what’s most important. It’s in the organization’s title: you aren’t alone. For Borruano, that’s the most important fact to convey.

“Mental health is for everyone,” says Borruano. “You don’t have to know exactly what someone is going through to be understanding. We want to open people’s minds and help people to understand that we’re built up by connecting with one another.” youarentaloneproject.com

Inviting artists of all disciplines to share their mental health journeys through paint, dance, poetry and more, the July 2019 exhibition was a wake-up call for awareness in the local area.

“People starting talking about how Baton Rouge was missing something like this,” Borruano explains of the organization’s mental health focus. “That’s when I decided this needed to be something more.”

The You Aren’t Alone Project’s goal is twofold: to create a network of support and to change the conversation surrounding mental health. Through regular meet-ups, which have gone digital during the pandemic, as well as other arts-oriented events, the growing team aims to attract as many people to the group as possible, regardless of a history of mental illness.

“We want to invite people who don’t deal with these issues daily,” Borruano says. “Mental health is something we all have.

There are negative and positive sides to it, but we all need to take care of it. We are all struggling in some way, and we can help one another by understanding that.”

A few months ago, this may have been more easily overlooked. But now, as people continue to face unprecedented and uncertain circumstances, mental health is at the forefront more than ever. Online, the You Aren’t Alone Project offers resources to aid people in coping, ranging from information from trusted medical journals to a blog written by Borruano and other members of her team that discusses personal experiences with quarantine.

“Whatever you’re feeling is OK and you don’t have to deal with it alone,” notes Borruano. “There

W

e’ve all seen a lot more of our homes’ interiors lately, thanks to the shelter-in-place order that went into effect more than a month ago. And if you are a bit bored with what you are seeing, join the club. Now more than ever, we crave a change of scenery—even if that scenery is limited to the interior walls of our own home. Enter celebrated interior designer Anthony Baratta’s new book Decorate Happy: Bold, Colorful Interiors. Published in March by Rizzoli, the timing could not have been better on a book about home décor and happy vibes.

“People’s lives are like colorful quilts—all of the crazy pieces eventually come together to form one amazing, beautiful whole,” writes Baratta. “No one’s life story is a simple beige blanket.”

Some are glorious pop art with mod rooms and bright primary colors, while others are rustically urbane. The featured houses are each unique, yet their rooms share one consistent underpinning: joy. And couldn’t we all use a bit more joy right about now?

“To decorate happy, let your home be an extension of yourself,” writes Baratta. “And look for things that bring you joy.”

And your powder room or bathroom, where you spend your days scrubbing, can be transformed into a retreat. But don’t think color should be limited to small sections of your home.

“We were able to use shades of cobalt and navy throughout this home,” says designer Allyson Hicks. “Giving the color

a consistent presence gives the space a theme and a very custom look. The color was utilized on velvet sofas, bar cabinets, and a barn door, to name a few areas.”

Strong color makes a strong impact.

Allyson Hicks used Benjamin Moore “Champion Cobalt” for the cabinet color in this bathroom. “My client really loves cobalt blue, and we were able to add the pop of color throughout the home. It is a powerful color, but also classic and comfortable at the same time.”

Curved shapes and rounded edges are making a comeback in interior design, and this is apparent in everything from sofas to rugs to pendant lamps.

Here, Hicks chose mirrors from Hooker Furniture to make an eye-catching statement worth reflecting on.

“Raising the center section created separate vanity spaces with clear and defined ends,” says Hicks. “It also allowed for more drawer storage and gives a more custom look.” Hicks used honed River White granite for the countertops, which is durable and attractive. And the honed finish gives a matte look that doesn’t compete with the powerful paint color.

Sometimes centered isn’t better.

Ask any design pro that. Here, Hicks positioned the Kohler faucets to the side of each mirror—not centered below—to allow more continuous counterspace for the hand soap and the hand sanitizer. How squeaky-clean smart is that?

“The living room was the biggest challenge,” says Bellizaire, who opted for multifunctional furnishings that are comfortable and durable without sacrificing style. The arms of the Caracole sofa can be removed and end tables popped into their place, and a daybed wrapped in spill-resistant fabric often serves as a YouTube watching station for the couple’s two children. Large-format porcelain tile with the look of black marble covers the fireplace and extends onto the walls beyond.

Followers came quickly, and it didn’t take long for the broader design world to notice her appeal.

In 2015, she was chosen as a “Style Spotter” for High Point Market, the world’s largest furnishings industry trade show. In 2017, refrigerator manufacturer Perlick named her its “Ambassador of Cool,” and in both of the next two years she was named one of the Top 100 Bloggers and Influencers by DesignHounds, a network of interior design professionals. All the while, she brought her social media fans along as she pored over products at markets and traveled to showrooms and manufacturing facilities both stateside and abroad.

So when she and her husband Reggie decided to buy and renovate a Baton Rouge house for their family of four, it was only natural that Bellizaire would let online viewers in on the project’s progress. And thanks to the relationships she had built with

big-name home product brands, it was also a natural next step that these companies would want to partner with Bellizaire to see some of their latest creations used to greatest effect inside her home.

“We bought it so quickly,” she says of the Country Club of Louisiana house. “I had an idea of what I wanted to do to it, but I wanted to really think it through.

I wanted to have all of the players at the table, and they wanted us to take their products and imagine what could be done with them.”

Bellizaire’s big ideas for updating this home built in the late 1990s went far beyond basic finish upgrades and new paint colors.

She knew that the dated built-in cabinets that flanked the living room fireplace would have to go.

She wanted to create an expanded

combined laundry room and mudroom and to reconfigure an awkwardly shaped master bathroom.

But most importantly, she had to conquer the kitchen. With help from draftsman Gerald Ravasio of Lawrence Design Service, she set out to tackle all of those tasks.

Part of a large open main space that included the living area and breakfast nook, the kitchen’s most prominent features were an L-shaped island and a heavy, rough-hewn load-bearing vertical beam. Along the wall behind the island was a single small and offcenter window. Bellizaire’s solutions? Create a second window to balance the back wall, and remove the beam in favor of hidden laminated beams in the attic. She also made the bold move of erasing the

launched the group as a way to create a bright spot of hope for our community,” Bellizaire reflects. “I personally felt overwhelmed, anxious and helpless about the havoc the outlook was wreaking on our state, so I offered to let others join me in a space focused on positivity, support, encouragement and, of course, decorating!”

Connecting with others—both face to face and virtually—has been the backbone of the personal brand carved out by Bellizaire ever since she married her communications background and passion for interior design. She began her blog, Inspired to Style, in 2013, offering a peek behind the typically tightly drawn curtain of the interior design world. From the start, her videos and posts offered practical “Design 101” tips as well as updates on trends and behind-the-scenes looks at her own projects.

COVER STORY powder room beside the kitchen in favor of an enlarged pantry that could serve as a “back kitchen” with additional workspace and storage for everything from small appliances to dry goods.

“It felt lopsided and offbalance,” Bellizaire says of the original kitchen. “I wanted to make a really strong statement with this room. I wanted it to have a little bit of oomph to it, not for it to float and be ethereal.”

To give the room the impact she envisioned, Bellizaire replaced the existing island with one wrapped in black fluted millwork and topped with pure white quartz for high contrast. But this island is more than just a pretty place to lay the mail—a 52-inch sink with moveable cutting boards is ready for whatever meal prep tasks she and Reggie take on. For the perimeter of the space, she chose white oak cabinetry with black hardware—but instead of upper cabinets, she had large-format

tile with the look of white marble installed all the way to the ceiling.

“This space is designed to entertain,” Bellizaire says. “We’ve got the huge prep sink here and another sink in the pantry, and there’s a second dishwasher in there as well. And the aisle between the island and the cabinets is wide enough for more than one person.”

On the other side of the house, Bellizaire’s next big focus was the master bathroom. The original room felt choppy and disconnected, with lots of walls and doors dividing each element.

“I wanted to remove one of the two original toilets and make the shower huge,” she says. “But that wall was where all of the major plumbing and venting for the house was. So I knew I had to move to plan B. I just flipped the layout. I was able to think on my feet and be creative, and that gave us the opportunity to also create a coffee bar in this room.”

A black Bertazzoni range sizzles when set in a wall of white oak cabinetry in the kitchen. All of the cabinetry in the house was designed by Bellizaire and built by Advantage Woodworks. The vent hood is by Zephyr, and the sconces above the windows are from Hudson Valley Lighting.

A large cypress column and L-shaped island were removed to make way for the renovated kitchen, which now gets more light thanks to an added second window along the back wall. Except for the enclosure that surrounds the Perlick refrigerator, there are no upper cabinets. Asian-influenced mesh pendant lights by Troy Lighting over the island don’t obscure the view. “It’s those changes that make the kitchen so open and inviting.”

for the interior décor. “Our last house was French Acadian style, with lots of warm neutral colors,” she says. “It was so much more traditional and heavy. I’m grateful we had the chance to kind of start from scratch. I brought in colors

“This was a case study in what will happen if you buy a house and want to renovate,” she says.

The top-down transformation of the dining room began with the selection of a modern twisted metal chandelier by Corbett Lighting. A clean-lined Bernhardt table with metal inlays is surrounded by chairs upholstered in a performance fabric. A grid of 20 framed handpainted fabric pieces makes a bold statement on one wall. “That inexpensive solution gave us a wow moment when you walk in the door,” Bellizaire says.

It’s contemporary and clean, but there’s a warmth to it.”

Finding the perfect furnishings to fit a house that was significantly smaller than the family’s previous residence was a balancing act, especially in the living room, where each family member—including Reggie and the couple’s 12-year-old son Sebastian and 10-year-old daughter Lauryn—had their own wish list. “In our old house, we had a playroom where we could watch TV, but this is the only TV in the house except for the kids’ game TV,” Bellizaire says. “Reggie wanted this room to be comfortable—he was pushing hard for a sectional. But since this is one of the first things you see when you come in the front door, it had to be pretty. So I came up with a compromise: Everything I put in the living room is very comfortable, but it’s in the colors that I wanted. The daybed is where

the kids like to lounge and watch YouTube. But it still has that pulled-together look I wanted.”

Though the seating feels sophisticated, Bellizaire had each piece upholstered in performance fabric. “This is an open-concept space, and I didn’t want to worry about the kids spilling something or putting their feet up or about having people over,” she says.

“Nothing in this room is something you can’t live on or touch.”

As the project wrapped up, Bellizaire seized the opportunity to surprise her family with a fresh look at the house with every accessory in place. “Most of my full-service projects have big install days where we put in all the furnishings and the finishing touches,” she says. “It was cool to be able to do that for my own family—to send my kids and husband out and then have them walk in and see everything all at once.”

finished rooms, she’s busy planning a new series of videos on how each area functions in daily life for her family. “On TV shows, there’s the reveal, and people think that’s the end,” she says.

“But you have to live in the space.

It was important to me to have the perfect balance of comfort and livability with the design aesthetic I wanted.”

Meanwhile, she has also created content for her partner brands, showing their customers how each appliance, light fixture, faucet or sink looks and performs in a real home. It’s part of a two-phase vision she has for presenting

her home to the public as a sort of showhouse. The first phase is virtual and includes all of those blog videos. The second will take the showhouse concept into three dimensions, with potential inperson tours and workshops right here in the house.

“People are so curious,” she says. “I want it to be experiential—somewhere that you can walk into and see how things work in real life. I love telling a story and helping people see that reality. That helps them to then be able to make informed decisions for their own homes.”

But of course, all of those

“I wanted this to feel like a boutique hotel in some European destination,” Bellizaire says of the master bedroom. A velvet-covered built-in headboard and platform bed are surrounded by a wall of cabinetry. “There’s so much storage here, it lets us keep the rest of the room very open,” Bellizaire says.

The master bath was the site of one of the home’s most dramatic overhauls, with the positioning of plumbing reimagined and walls removed. Here, a floating vanity with a tall glass-encased-fabric backsplash by Sicis is flanked by the new shower—complete with Mr. Steam steam shower system—and tub. The tub and sinks are by Villeroy & Boch, and all faucets are by Brizo.

in-person opportunities are on hold for now, as Baton Rouge and the world beyond begin to navigate the new normal in the time of COVID-19. Luckily, the members of Bellizaire’s new Facebook community group know she’s only an iPhone screen away, along with other likeminded design lovers both here in the Capital City and elsewhere. It all ties back to the sense of interpersonal connection that’s at the heart of her success.

“My goal for the group was to allow people to post the decorating projects they were working on during this time and get input from other design enthusiasts,” she says. “I’m not the main attraction—the community is, as they uplift and encourage each other while offering suggestions and asking really insightful questions to help each other. I’m so proud of how they are using this resource to help them be productive during this quarantine period!”

VERONICA WALDROP’S POWERFUL POEM BECOMES A BOOK AIMED AT EMPOWERING GIRLS

I

Nuff when Natalia was an infant, says her husband Will. As life continued on and Nina was born a few years later, the poem was never finished, Will says.

But when Veronica was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and as the disease became incurable, she knew she wanted to leave her daughters a gift that would inspire them as they grew.

Veronica died on November 4, 2017, at age 38, only days after finishing the poem, Will says.

“Though we miss her every day, Veronica’s courage and strength is living in us,” he says. “The Nuff is a part of our healing and the beginning of a mission to inspire our daughters and girls everywhere that you are enough.”

Two weeks after his wife died, Will asked his friend and author Alan Williams to help him bring

her story to life. Will sought to preserve Veronica’s legacy, establish a resource to help others, and create something for his daughters that would provide enduring guidance.

The story’s message is applicable now more than ever with societal pressure and social media affecting girls and young women 24 hours a day, Will says. In the story, the unicorn’s horn is broken and she has a bandage on her knee and holes in her shorts, Will points out. “Basically, to let them know imperfection is perfection,” he says. “You’re beautiful and wonderfully made just the way God created you. That was the message she wanted to leave for them.”

The book is a living representation of Veronica and the lessons she wanted to impart to not just

her own children, but kids everywhere. “I think as she was writing it she recognized it would be a valuable story for any little girl, not just her own daughters,” says Kate Castle, a Baton Rouge-based radiation oncologist who helped care for Veronica.

A creative writing major at college with an energetic personality, Veronica wore a unicorn costume around the house during her final days to keep her daughters’ spirits up, says Castle, who adds that everyone who met Veronica loved her and wanted to get to know her better. “The book is as engaging as Veronica was as a person,” says Castle.

Castle reads the book often to her own seven-year old daughter and marvels each time she looks at the book’s unicorn protagonist.

nspired by a young mother’s final wish, the children’s book The Nuff follows the adventures of a unicorn with a broken horn who learns she is perfect just the way she is.

“When the world says you can’t and you should just give up,” the story says, “know you are brave and beautiful. You will always be a Nuff!”

In other words, the unicorn— and the young readers following the story—learn confidence is not derived from what they do but from whom they already are. You are enough—or a “Nuff.”

That’s the message author Veronica Waldrop wanted to leave behind for her two young daughters, Natalia and Nina, before she passed away from stage IV breast cancer. Waldrop began writing the poem that would later become The

QUALITY OF LIFE the unicorn resemble Veronica, especially around the eyes, Castle says. “It’s just like I’m sitting there face to face with Veronica,” Castle says.

Published by Tailwind Publishing, the book has already received accolades for its inspiring message. In late March, Louisiana first lady Donna Edwards read The Nuff while livestreaming for children and parents on her Facebook page.

Today, Natalia, 8, and Nina, 4, live with Will in St. Francisville, where he is busy with his insurance work and homeschooling the girls during the COVID-19 crisis. To see the yearslong process of publishing the story come to fruition has been exciting, he says. “To get a tangible item in your hands, to see it, was pretty amazing.”

And it’s not just little girls and women that have connected with The Nuff, Will says.

Plenty of boys and grown men have said they were touched by the book’s sweet message.

“I’ve had to pull it out and remind myself that I’m enough to raise two little girls and handle all the other things that I juggle,” he says.

“Sometimes you want to quit and give up.”

But that little voice inside his head always tells him to keep going, he says.

hen two 22-yearold LSU students can barely contain their excitement for the weekend, it’s reasonable to assume a rager or marquee concert is on the calendar.

But in early March—two months before what would have been graduation and just a week before the university announced its move to online classes for the rest of the semester—the only party Kyley Catalano and Elise Farris were looking forward to that weekend was a plant party.

The side-hustling pair launched an online plant growing, potting and delivery business in late 2018. In January of this year, the

“Because I have a cat, I keep all my plants in my bedroom, and it was a rainforest,” says Catalano, a marketing major who has for the past year balanced a service industry job with classes and their startup. “It felt like there was an environment in there; it was just too much.”

They grow their own succulents and mushrooms, craft unique ceramics and thrift eclectic items as planters. It’s all work but never feels stressful. They are beginning to steer away from their other jobs to give Garden Goons more attention.

“Mentally, that feels healthy,” Farris says.

She may move back to the Northshore soon, so with Catalano remaining in Baton Rouge, the pop-ups could stretch into Mandeville and Covington, too, while still occurring at French Truck Coffee, White Star Market and Pink Elephant Antiques, among other spots in Baton Rouge.

“Anywhere we go, we will take a chance and just ask about hosting a pop-up with a business,” Catalano says. “People have responded so well to that, so my advice to creatives is to reach out, and reach out boldly.”

medical professionals in need. To date, about 2,500 masks have come across my porch, where pickups and deliveries have become the norm. Nationwide, the movement is hovering around the 35,000 mask mark, and by the time you read this it will have escalated substantially.

If I told you I had been making dinner every night, I would not be telling the truth. My husband has singlehandedly sailed the kitchen ship and it’s been such a relief—and a conviction that everything found in my Picnics, Potlucks & Porch Parties cookbook can be easily created by someone with the most basic cooking skills, i.e. my sports administration husband.

The Italian Sausage Sandwiches are quick and easy, and an excuse to get outdoors on a beautiful evening and fire up the grill. The Honey Baked Ham freed up freezer space as we began our stayat-home quarantine and provided the most delicious sandwiches for the lunch breaks we now share. And the Shrimp Scampi Pasta just can’t be beat for a light and quick meal when everyone is too tired to cook.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE SANDWICHES WITH SKILLET PEPPERS

HONEY BAKED HAM INGREDIENTS

6 Italian sausage links 1 (12-oz.) bottle dark beer (Guinness, etc.)

2 medium green bell peppers, thinly sliced 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 2 Tbsp. olive oil 2 tsp. minced garlic ¼ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 6 buns, split 6 slices provolone cheese, halved Jalapeño peppers, sliced (optional) Place sausages in a large saucepan; add beer, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover, and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, or until sausages are no longer pink.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, sauté bell peppers and onion in oil until tender. Add garlic, and cook a minute longer. Season with salt and black pepper.

INGREDIENTS

1 whole (5- to 10-lb.) precooked spiral-cut ham

1 stick butter ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup honey 1⁄8 cup orange juice ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon ¼ tsp. ground cloves Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a pan large enough to hold ham and its juices with a few layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil, or use disposable roasting pans for easy cleanup.

Combine butter, brown sugar, honey, orange juice and spices in a heavy saucepan. Heat on low until butter is melted and ingredients are evenly mixed.

Place ham in lined pan, and brush with the warm honey glaze. Bake for 1 to 1 ½ hours, depending on size of ham. (Check packaging for exact cooking times.) Every 15 minutes or so, brush on remaining glaze.

If you’d like top of ham to be more golden brown, turn on broiler for a minute or so to caramelize top. You can also add more glaze with some extra brown sugar, and use a kitchen blow torch.

Let ham rest 10-15 minutes, then remove to a platter to serve.

Makes 8-10 servings.

Boil pasta according to package directions, removing before pasta is quite done. Drain pasta.

Season shrimp with salt and pepper; add to pan and cook until they have turned pink, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove shrimp from pan; set aside and keep warm. Add wine and lemon juice to pan; bring to a boil. Add remaining 2 Tbsp. butter and 2 Tbsp. oil. When butter has melted, return shrimp to pan along with parsley and cooked pasta. Stir well and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle more olive oil and serve immediately.

While the kitchen was very nice, its design and cabinets felt closed off and dark, and the angled island made navigating the kitchen difficult. In this case, our main goal was to lighten and brighten the space.

n homes today, formal dining rooms are used less and less—especially those disconnected by walls and shut away from the rest of the home. Ourso Designs treated us to a look at one of their dramatic before and after designs.

In this home, rooms were compartmentalized and the formal dining room originally opened only to the living room. The foyer was used as a piano room. The design team created what now feels like an entirely new home.

“We maintained neutrals and warmer flooring throughout the home, which complemented the wooden elements throughout beautifully,” Ramirez says. “By reconfiguring the kitchen and replacing the dividing walls with the post and beam design, we were able to give the clients exactly what they wanted—an open and bright home to enjoy for many years.”

BEFORE

The entire space opened up when Ourso’s team removed the dividing walls. To keep a visual separation between the spaces, the living, dining and kitchen areas were framed with beams, posts, and door headers from The Olde Mill. As walls were taken out and structural post put in place, the hollow beams beautifully concealed the structural elements.

Ourso’s designers reconfigured the island, allowing for a more open space. For easy entertaining, the clients added a bar nook with a built-in wine cooler, ice machine and additional storage.

Another special detail is the pantry door. It was on the same wall as a lot of the beam work, so Ourso had the beam manufacturer make a custom door from reclaimed wood for the pantry that looks antique and perfectly complements the other beam work.

The fireplace was a bit of a challenge. It sat on a diagonal, with an exterior door immediately to its right. It was pretty plain with only flush drywall and a fireplace insert. Ourso’s team added a slight brick bump that tapered towards the top, painted it white to brighten, and added a beam mantel.
