EXPRESS YOURSELF!
T
THE ARTS ARE THRIVING IN OUR SCHOOLS
he arts are alive and thriving in East Baton Rouge Parish Schools, where students in nearly every school have the opportunity to explore creativity through music, visual arts, dance, theater and digital media. Across the parish, the district has built a comprehensive fine arts program, ensuring students of all ages and skill levels can discover their talents, express themselves and connect their learning to the world around them. For Administrative Director of Fine Arts Dr. Sean Joffrion, the mission is both professional and personal. After nearly 30 years serving as a teacher, administrator, and now district leader, he has witnessed firsthand how access to the arts can transform students’ confidence and academic experience. “What’s unique about our district is that we can fit the needs of any child with any talent or interest,” Joffrion says. “Creativity should be inclusive, and every student deserves the opportunity to be an artist in their own way.” The district’s fine arts offerings span an impressive range of disciplines, including vocal and instrumental music, dance, drama, visual arts and TV, film and media arts. Visual arts alone can include everything from drawing and painting to sculpture, photography and digital design. In total, more than 225 art teachers deliver instruction across more than 125 specialized courses, giving students the opportunity to develop their skills from elementary through high school.
10
Just as important as the breadth of programs is their accessibility. Today, nearly every school in the district offers at least one art discipline, ensuring students across all communities have the chance to participate. Beyond the classroom, districtwide events give students meaningful opportunities to perform, collaborate and showcase their talents. One of the most inclusive is the annual Gospel Choir, held each February in recognition of Black History Month. Open to any student who wants to participate, regardless of musical background, the choir brings together young voices from across the parish. “It gives students the opportunity to learn a new genre, meet peers from other schools and connect through music,” Joffrion explains. “It’s about more than singing, it’s about belonging.” For students seeking advanced performance opportunities, audition-based Honor Band, Honor Symphony and Honor Choir programs bring together some of the parish’s most talented young musicians to perform in ensembles. March brings another major highlight: Arts in Schools Month, a celebration that showcases student creativity across every campus. Throughout the month, schools host programs that give families and the community a firsthand look at the depth and diversity of student achievement in the arts.
E A S T B AT O N R O U G E PA R I S H S C H O O L S Y S T E M | e b r s c h o o l s . o r g
“Every school showcases what their students and teachers have accomplished,” says Joffrion. “It’s a powerful reminder of how much talent exists in our district.” Joffrion emphasizes that the arts are not simply extracurricular, they are essential to student growth. “The arts help students build confidence, communication skills and the ability to express themselves,” he says. “When students are given the opportunity to be creative, they make deeper connections in their learning and discover new ways to engage with the world.” That commitment to creativity is shared at every level of leadership across the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, including Superintendent LaMont Cole. “When students engage in music, visual arts, theater or dance, they develop creativity, discipline and confidence that supports their success in the classroom and beyond,” Cole says. “We are proud to ensure that every student has access to programs that inspire their talents and help prepare them for bright futures.” With a continued commitment to expanding access and celebrating student talent, East Baton Rouge Parish Schools are ensuring the arts remain a vibrant and essential part of every child’s education. For more information about Fine Arts programs and upcoming events, visit ebrschools.org or follow EBR Fine Arts on Facebook.

Q: What are your favorite subjects in school? A: Math and social studies. I love math because I have found it easy and fun ever since I was little. I love social studies because I like learning about the way people live in other places and how they lived in the past. In my spare time, I like playing football and basketball. Q: What do you appreciate most about your school? A: I really like our Montessori program, which I started in Pre-K. I also enjoy our microsociety program, which is designed like a real city and all the students have jobs. (I was a peacekeeper last year.) Q: What would you like to be when you grow up? A: I used to think I’d like to be a police officer so I could fight crime. But now, I’m thinking of becoming an FBI agent so I can also investigate crimes and because it’s a higher rank. List 3 words that describe you.

Q: What profession would you like to pursue someday and why? A: I’m interested in medicine, likely surgery, because it blends precision, problemsolving, and the opportunity to create a meaningful impact on people’s lives. I’ve always been passionate about challenges requiring focus and dedication, and I’m motivated by the thought of helping others in times of need. Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: I love creating and expressing myself through art, honing my musicality in piano, learning, and traveling! I’m also always open to new experiences or anything that allows me to see the world in a new light. Q: What is special about your school and/or teachers?
LUCY THOMAS Q: What is your proudest accomplishment?
A: My proudest accomplishment is taking advantage of everything high school had to offer. Favorite moments include an exchange trip to Chile, winning the Cross-Country State Championship, Festival Singers choir performances in Italy, and participating in eight school clubs! Q: What do you appreciate most about your school? A: The BRMHS faculty are the most dedicated and invested people I have ever met. Whether it is teaching me something as simple as freshman-level math or as complicated as the future of democracy, my teachers inspire me to go much deeper than the surface to answer questions and challenge myself. I will be forever grateful for their guidance and for developing me as a student and person!
A: Glasgow offers a multitude of classes, clubs, and sports, giving everyone a chance to find something they enjoy. Our teachers and faculty members truly prioritize our success and do the best they can to support us. The welcoming atmosphere especially provides a community where everyone is encouraged to grow.

SHANE STEWART RAYVEN WATSON Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: In Chinese culture, teaching is seen as a deeply respected profession. A teacher’s words and actions can shape a child’s life in ways we may never fully realize. In Chinese culture, we often compare teachers to candles—quietly burning themselves to bring light to others. When I had the opportunity to become a teacher after coming to the U.S., I felt a strong sense of responsibility. Supported by colleagues, families, and my experiences as a parent, I continue to grow into this role.
A: I didn’t set out to become a teacher; I set out to tell stories. But the theater teachers who shaped me showed me how powerful this work can be. They created a space where I felt seen, challenged, and inspired, and I wanted to do that for others. I realized the most meaningful stories weren’t on stage, but in my students. After 22 years, it’s their growth that keeps me here, watching them find their voice and discover who they are.
A: My grandmothers were teachers, so it is in my blood. Even as a little girl, I always wanted to play “school”, and if I was not the teacher, I did not want to play. Being a teacher is something I have always known I was meant to do, and I am living my childhood dream.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work?
A: Watching students grow into themselves. Theater gives them a space to take risks, build confidence, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. Seeing a shy student speak up, or a hesitant one fully commit to a role, is incredibly powerful. It’s not just about the final performance— it’s about the transformation along the way.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: When students realize they can connect with people beyond their own world—whether by talking with native speakers while traveling, interacting with guest speakers in Mandarin, or proudly sharing what they have learned about Chinese culture. These moments show me that students are gaining confidence, curiosity, and openness. When they begin to see themselves as capable communicators and cultural bridges, I feel a deep sense of purpose in my work. Q: How do you hope that learning Mandarin will affect your students? A: I hope they become more openminded, empathetic, and curious about the world. Language is more than communication—it carries culture, perspectives, and ways of thinking.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work?
Q: What lessons do you hope your students learn from you? A: I hope they learn confidence, empathy, and resilience. Theater asks you to step into someone else’s shoes, so they begin to understand perspectives beyond their own. I want them to take risks without fear of failure and to trust their voice. Most of all, I hope they leave knowing they belong, that their ideas matter, and that they’re capable of more than they think.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work? A: Being able to give love, support, and consistency to students who may not always receive that at home. I get to be a safe space for them, someone they can trust and feel comfortable with. It is bigger than just teaching lessons. I am helping shape how they think, how they treat others, and how they see themselves Q: What are your hopes for your students as they graduate? A: I hope that they become wellrounded, high-functioning adults who know how to make good decisions. I want them to be successful not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and financially. I hope they carry the lessons they have learned and use them in real life. More than anything, I want them to be good people who are kind, respectful, and thoughtful. If they leave my classroom with strong character and a sense of purpose, then I know I have done my job.

Q: Why did you choose a career in education?
A: I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. When I was growing up, we were one of the families that did not have stability. We moved often, and I changed schools frequently. Schools consistently offered me structure and predictability. I could go to school, work hard, and excel in academics because the format was the same, regardless of the new environment. Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work? A: When teachers grow in their practices and then students grow in their academics and reach new heights. Q: What are your hopes for your students and for elementary education in general? A: Having students leave here with solid foundations in literacy and numeracy … knowing that they have the capacity to compete at any level and be successful. My hopes are that they return to Twin Oaks Elementary so we can highlight their successes, and so they can become a partner that gives back to continue to build our community.
Q: What makes Glasgow a great place to work? A: Glasgow Middle’s diverse student body, dedicated faculty, engaged parents, and supportive community partners make for a dynamic place to work each day. Everyone is committed to supporting students and helping them achieve a successful future as members of the Baton Rouge community and beyond. Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work? A: I find the growth and development of students to be the most rewarding part of my work. Glasgow Middle loves to celebrate student growth while they are with us for middle school, but we love it even more when they check back in after high school and beyond. We are truly making a difference for the future. Q: What are your hopes for your students and for middle school education in general? A: My hopes for my students are that they take a break from their screens and embrace all that life has to offer! There are wonderful opportunities to be experienced and shared!
ROBERT M. WEBB JR.
Q: Why did you choose a career in education? A: Truth be told, I did not choose a career in education: Education chose me! I was given the opportunity to empower and foster learning for students and watch them grow socially, emotionally, and academically. Q: What do you find most rewarding about your work? A: What I find most rewarding about the work is knowing that I am changing lives and making the world a better place for mankind. I also get the opportunity to provide equity for students and reduce poverty while creating a gateway for generational wealth. Q: What lessons or skills are important for a principal to share with his/her students and staff? A: As a principal, you must be highly motivated and understand the importance of motivating students to succeed academically. You must also equip them with the essential tools to become a productive citizen.

LEARNING THAT GOES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM At the East Baton Rouge Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC), students discover hands-on learning that prepares them for success in college, careers and beyond. Open to students in grades 10-12 from any EBR high school, CTEC offers specialized College and Career Pathway programs that may not be available on their home campus. Students attend CTEC part time during the school day, with transportation provided, allowing them to gain valuable industry experience while continuing their high school education. From welding, automotive technology, culinary arts, and TV and film production to healthcare, pre-veterinary studies, HVAC, drafting, carpentry, computing, process technology, and NCCER electrical and instrumentation training, there is truly something for everyone. Through partnerships with industry leaders and higher education institutions, including ABC Pelican, Baton Rouge Community College, and LSU, students graduate with the skills, certifications, and realworld experience needed to confidently take the next step toward a successful future. Whether students plan to enter the workforce immediately after graduation, continue their education or pursue technical training, CTEC equips them with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to succeed in an everchanging world. At CTEC, learning goes beyond the classroom, empowering students to turn their interests into meaningful careers and bright futures.

FROM CLASSROOMS TO CAREERS
BUILDING THE WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE
A
cross the Greater Baton Rouge region, industry leaders are sounding the alarm: highly skilled craftsmen are retiring faster than they can be replaced. From welders and millwrights to electricians and ironworkers, these careers are essential to keeping the industrial economy running, and they also offer students a clear path to stability, advancement and long-term success.
The East Baton Rouge Parish School System is answering this call through a strategic focus on industrial crafts and workforce development. According to Amber Boyd, Executive Director of Workforce Development with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, the goal is to prepare students to graduate college and be career ready while directly addressing the needs of the region’s workforce. At the high school level, students can choose from career pathways that include carpentry, welding and automotive
mechanics, gaining foundational skills that translate directly into high-wage, high-demand jobs. For those whose home campuses don’t offer their preferred pathway, the EBR Career and Technical Education Center (EBR CTEC) opens even more doors. At CTEC, students engage in hands-on learning and can earn industry-recognized credentials in areas such as HVAC, instrumentation, electrical, architecture, carpentry and automotive mechanics.
These programs are not just about learning a trade, Boyd says. They are about building a sustainable pipeline of talent for local industries. That’s why the East Baton Rouge Parish School System is deepening its collaboration with key partners who share in the commitment to developing the next generation of skilled craftsmen.
expectations, mentors and job sites. As industry partners continue to emphasize the urgent need for skilled craftsmen, EBRPSS is proud to play a leading role in meeting that demand. By aligning students’ passions with tangible career opportunities, the school system is helping to build a stronger workforce and a more competitive regional economy. “If you enjoy working with your hands, solving practical problems and seeing the results of your efforts in the real world, industrial crafts may be the perfect fit,” says Superintendent LaMont Cole. “Whether you dream of designing, building, repairing or maintaining the infrastructure that keeps our community running, there is a place for you in these programs.”
These partnerships are about more than coursework, Boyd says. They connect classroom learning with real-world e b r s c h o o l s . o r g | E A S T B AT O N R O U G E PA R I S H S C H O O L S Y S T E M
