By Harry Mottram. Last month the city’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) came into effect bringing an era of cleaner air in Bath. It is also the UK’s first charging clean air zone outside of London aimed at improving public health, child health in particular and life for those with breathing difficulties. However there is a price and although there are winners there are also losers as the Council attempts to cut levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2).
Polluting vehicles will be charged £9 or £100 a day to drive in the centre of Bath. Daily charges will apply seven days a week, 24 hours a day and all year round but private cars and motorbikes will not be charged. Automatic number plate recognition cameras are installed on all roads leading into the zone while vehicle number plates will be checked against a DVLA database. Continued on page 3
By Harry Mottram. Despite some European countries putting the use of the Oxford Astra Zenaca to vaccinate against Covid-19 on hold a doctor in Bath has moved to reassure the public of its use. Dr Bruce Laurence, Director of Public Health at Bath & North East Somerset Council said the vaccine was safe and residents should take the opportunity to be inoculated if offered the chance. He said: “This is a lifesaving vaccine that has now been given to over 25 million Brits - around half the total adult population - and many tens of millions more people worldwide. “Both the trials done in its development, and the experience from these large campaigns, have shown the vaccine to have an excellent safety profile. “Events involving blood clots have occurred in a very small number of people who have received the vaccine. But the numbers of people getting such clots after having the vaccine is actually lower than it would be in the untreated general population in a similar time period. Continued on page 3
