Call for ‘in-putt’ on course’s future

People are being encouraged to say what they would like to see in place of Entry Hill Golf Course in Bath.

Declining use of the course has led Bath and North East Somerset Council to seek residents’ views on the kind of community provision they would most enjoy having there instead.

A consultation has been launched to welcome opinions on a range of options including an urban mountain bike park, a community growing space, outdoor education or continuing to provide a golf course.

B&NES Council said: “Use of Entry Hill Golf Course has declined over the past several years and the council is keen to look at other ways of using the site which would attract a larger number of people and which would have wider health benefits for everyone using it.”

The final decision about its future would also need to be in line with the council’s climate emergency declaration to help meet its goal to achieve carbon neutrality for Bath by 2030.

“We’d like to see more people making use of the site for leisure activities in the open air, which is vital to health and wellbeing.

“We are exploring the potential for alternative uses and therefore encourage ideas from the community. The options we have laid out are not an exhaustive list, so we are keen to hear more suggestions from residents about what is important to them before any decision is made.”

Entry Hill Golf Course is currently operated by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) on behalf of the council.

It’s all change on the buses in the New Year A raft of changes to buses in Bath are being made shortly after the turn of the New Year.

A bus service between the city centre and Weston will no longer run on Sundays and Public Holidays, First West of England said.

The bus operator said the changes “include timetable alterations designed to better reflect customer demand, improve reliability and in some cases reduce journey times across the area”.

They take effect on Sunday, January 5.

First said: “Timings will be revised across most services to improve punctuality and in many cases journey times are reduced.

“These include Service 1 (Bath Bus Station - Southdown), Service 2 (City Centre – Mulberry Park), Service 6/6A/7 (Bath Bus Station – Larkhall), Service 8 (Kingsway – Upper Weston), Service 9 (Bath Bus Station – Upper

Some journeys operating between Bath Bus Station and Twerton Bridge during the late evening will be withdrawn, and a small number of journeys running in the late evening Monday to Friday and Saturday will terminate at Twerton High Street, rather than Bath Bus Station as previously.

“Due to low customer demand, Service 9 (Bath Bus Station – Upper Weston) will be withdrawn on Sundays and Public Holidays, as well as some early morning journeys on Monday to Friday and Saturday.

Customers will be able to use alternative services during these times, including Service 19 which will operate a small diversion via Penn Lea on Sundays and Public Holidays.

“A number of changes will be made to Service 19 and 19A, though no changes will be made to the route. Service 19A (Bath – Cribbs Causeway) will be renumbered Service 18 and will run every hour during the main part of the day Monday to Saturday, with Service 19 operating hourly at peak times Monday to Friday only.

“During off-peak times in the week and all day on Saturdays only Service 18 will operate.

Evening journeys Monday to Saturday will be withdrawn, with the last service departing at around 18.30 from Bath Bus Station, and around 20.00 from Cribbs Causeway.

“Service 19 will also operate a slightly revised timetable during early mornings and early evenings on Sundays and Public Holidays, with some journeys terminating earlier along the route and others extended.

Customers are advised to check the new timetable.

“Service 172 (Bath – Paulton / Wells) will have its route revised in the Paulton area, and buses on this service will no longer operate within the car park of Tesco at Old Mills.

“Service X31 (Bath – Chippenham) journeys in the evening Monday to Saturday and during the day on Sundays and Public Holidays will no longer be operated by First.

It is understood that a service operated by Faresaver will cover this route on Sundays and Public Holidays and customers are advised to contact Faresaver for further information. For further information on a replacement service during the weekday and Saturday evenings, customers are advised to contact Wiltshire Council.

“The University Services U1/ U3 (Oldfield Park – University of Bath) will operate on a reduced level of service between January 6 and 31, as the University of Bath will be in assessment weeks when customer demand decreases. Both Service U1 and U3 will operate at least every 10 minutes throughout the day.”

Rugby foundation teams up to beat child hunger Bath Rugby Foundation has teamed up with Fareshare South West to provide healthy meals to families in Bath.

More than 270,000 tonnes of perfectly edible surplus food is thrown away each year and the UK’s largest food poverty charity, FareShare, wants to see it put to good use.

By using quality, in-date surplus food which would otherwise have gone to waste, the charity turns an environmental problem into a social solution.

The rugby foundation started working with FareShare during the summer at its Project Rugby hub nights. The relationship proved successful and it has now developed into a large, weekly food order, serving the foundation’s Lifestyle Change Project, Hitz and Tackling Health programmes.

We see it too often: children attending our programmes are hungry when they arrive. Wera returned again as Bath MP with increased majority as she promises to fight for tolerance

Wera Hobhouse was re-elected as Bath MP with an increased majority of more than 12,000 votes.

More than half of the 52,330 votes cast were for the Liberal Democrat candidate, who was first elected in 2017.

The turnout was 77.18 per cent, up 2,748 from 74.3 per cent at the last general election.

Speaking after she was declared the winner in the

early hours of December 13, she said: “I want to thank the other candidates for a respectful contest. It’s possible to disagree, but disagree well.

“A huge thankyou to my fabulous team and all our wonderful volunteers. We got a great result.

“I want to thank the people of Bath for putting their trust in me and re-electing me as their MP.” She added: “In Bath, we

believe in an open, tolerant and outward looking society and I will continue to fight for that.”

Mrs Hobhouse received 28,419 votes, up from 23,436 in 2017.

Standing for the first time in Bath, Conservative candidate Annabel Tall came in second place with 16,097, down from her Tory predecessor Ben Howlett’s 17,742 at the last election.

She said her party had picked

up votes from across the city, adding: “We all need to come together and work in unity in Bath.”

Representing Labour, Mike Davies said: “Thank you to the people of Bath. It’s been a wonderful place to run a campaign and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Brexit’s Jimi fought election with cancer

Confusion as mystery candidate Bill blocked Bath protest candidate Bill Blockhead said he was “perturbed” to be initially barred from the election count.

The independent claimed he had been blocked from entering the hall at the University of Bath where the votes are being counted and told he would only be allowed in if he removed his costume.

Speaking on the night Mr Blockhead said: “I think this campaign has gone pretty well. There’s been quite a lot of support, particularly for leaving the solar system.

“My policy on guinea pigs has gone down incredibly well, I think Boris might adopt it. We’re thinking of sending him some guinea pigs in a parcel.”

He added: “I’m a bit perturbed that we haven’t been allowed into the count.

“Lord Buckethead has been on stage next to Theresa May. I find it quite disturbing.

“It’s an art performance. Completely peaceful. I don’t want to harm anyone or cause a disturbance.

“It’s just an opportunity for some people who don’t want to vote for the other candidates.

“I like to put ideas out there and see how people respond. It’s come as a surprise we’ve had such positive feedback.”

The anonymous individual said he was “let in eventually” and joined his four opponents on the stage for the result.

“Clearly I need to work on my campaign message,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Don’t vote for Bill achieved 341 votes.

“Thank you all for your support, I’m not done yet.”

Bath’s Brexit Party election candidate, who is known as ‘Jimi Farage’, fought the entire campaign with prostate cancer.

Jimi Ogunnusi refused to step aside when he was diagnosed days before campaigning began.

As his dad Bolaji also has the condition he thought treatment would be simple – so he was shocked when he was told he had to go in for keyhole surgery.

Now the university lecturer and entrepreneur wants to raise awareness of prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men – a rate that doubles in Afro-Caribbeans.

Mr Ogunnusi said: “I was diagnosed in November 4, just before the election was called.

“Brexit Party HQ said my health was more important but I said I wasn’t standing down. I still wanted to fight this.

“I would rather have £10 in my pocket and be a free British citizen than £100 and be part of a European empire.”

Standing for the Brexit Party put him at odds with his family – his wife Christine originally voted to remain in the European Union but now wants to leave, while their children support left-wing parties. One of their daughter’s friends call him ‘Jimi Farage’ after the Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage.

His stance also raised the eyebrows of his colleagues at the University of the West of England. At the start of the new term there were none of the usual hugs and handshakes and few wanted to raise his political allegiance with him.

But Mr Ogunnusi said the greatest aggression had been from voters.

“They see I’m standing for the Brexit Party and do a double-take. The disgust on their faces,” he said.

“One woman, it was like I had an infrared dot on my face. She was unstoppable.

“Bath is a heavily remain area. That doesn’t deter me. In my upbringing in Nigeria, I always stood up to bullies.”

Despite his dad’s diagnosis, Mr Ogunnusi said he was naive about prostate cancer.

“I’d been going to the toilet quite often. My wife was nagging me to see a doctor.

“I had a few blood tests and nothing came up. I had a prostate test.

The result was a lot higher than it should be. I had a biopsy and it came back cancerous.

“The first line of defence was to take out my prostate. I was going to put my affairs in order but the surgeon said it was just a routine procedure.”

He added: “Men don’t talk about issues with our health, particularly when you add the sexual element. The NHS has its problems but my experience was very good.”

Plans for 300 student flats at Riverside project - but no parking

Two blocks providing accommodation for nearly 300 students could be built in south Bath under new plans.

The Dick Lovett Company’s Mini dealership in Lower Bristol Road sits within the city’s flagship Western Riverside regeneration project to create a new residential quarter.

The firm is planning to demolish and level the Mini site, an office and a warehouse to build 290 studio and cluster student bedrooms, with 1,100sqm of retail space on the ground floor. There would not be any car parking but there will be space for the students to store 145 bikes.

The plans say: “The application would provide a significant number of student bedrooms in a highly sustainable urban location.

“The provision of purposebuilt student accommodation in this location would potentially free up/limit the demand for larger family sized dwellings elsewhere in the city which are occupied by HMOs (houses in multiple occupancy) and thus help alleviate pressures on the existing housing market.

“As the proposed development does not include any on-site car parking provision, in line with the outline planning permission, it will have very limited impact on local traffic flows and vehicular emissions.”

Bath and North East Somerset Council will decide the fate of the application.

The wider Western Riverside development will provide up to 2,281 homes, plus shops, restaurants and student accommodation.

Selling a bike online? Don’t reveal your address

Cyclists have been given tips on keeping their bicycles safe from thieves after the police raided three homes and recovered a “significant” number of bicycles and motorcycles.

Three teenage boys from Bristol were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle after the police operation on Thursday, December 19.

Avon and Somerset police believe online selling sites and social media platforms have been used to identify high value bicycles and motorbikes for sale whereby sellers have shared their address and details of their whereabouts with prospective buyers.

The majority of the burglaries reported have occurred shortly after victims have disclosed these details and while they were away or at work.

As part of the morning action, officers also seized a number of additional bicycles, motorbikes and other parts believed to be stolen. They will now be working to identify if any of these bicycles have been reported as stolen so they can be returned to the owners.

Inspector Andy Peppin, of Operation Remedy, said: “Over the last year, there have been a significant number of bicycle thefts across Bath and North East Somerset.

“Nearly all of the thefts have occurred following the victims sharing their address and movements with individuals they believed to be interested in buying their bikes.

“We take burglary very seriously and are committed to identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible.

“We seized a number of bicycles we believe to be stolen and will be working hard to identify the original owners

and return their bikes to them.

I cannot advise members of the public strongly enough to never disclose any personal details – particularly your home address and movements – when attempting to sell bikes or other belongings online.

“In addition to avoiding divulging details online, there are also a number of things members of the public can do to make it harder for thieves to steal their bikes as well as making it easier for police officers to identify a bicycle as stolen and return it to the original owners.”

Follow these tips to keep your bicycles safe from thieves: • When attempting to sell your bicycles or motor bikes online, never share your bank details, address or movements, particularly if you are away from home or on holiday for a considerable period of time.

• When arranging to meet with a prospective buyer meet in a neutral location, ideally a car park with CCTV or a public location where others are present.

• Where possible, securely store your bicycles in your home.

• If this isn’t possible, ensure they are kept in a secure outbuilding such as an alarmed and locked shed or garage.

• Always lock your bicycles to something immovable like a wall, the floor or a • Double lock your bikes using two quality locks, at least one of which is a D-Lock.

• Get your bikes security marked and registered at www. bikeregister.com/register and www.immobilise.com • Record the details of your bicycles including noting the frame number, the BikeRegister number plus any other distinguishing features and take a photo.

How style icon’s bras are bringing comfort to women Fashion designer Stella McCartney has donated 200 specially-designed bras to the Royal United Hospital in Bath for women who have undergone breast surgery.

Made from organic cotton, the post-surgery bras are comfortable and supportive and a particularly good fit for women with prosthetics The bra is aimed primarily at women who have undergone a mastectomy as part of their treatment, but is also suitable for anyone who has had surgery for breast cancer.

It is made from ultra-soft cotton and cotton lace, with a soft, flexible under-band and front and back fastenings. It includes ultra-soft internal pockets for use with prosthesis, wide, adjustable straps, and an extended size range.

The RUH was one of just a handful of hospitals to be given the bras, which are now being

offered to patients.

Breast care nurse Catherine Brown said: “We’ve just started to give the bras out to our patients, but the feedback we’ve had has been very positive – the women have said how comfortable they are to wear, that they are easy to look after, and feel very feminine. These bras are a very generous donation and will help to make our patients feel comfortable and more confident as they complete their journey to recovery.”

Patient Pam Stoate, above, was one of the first patients to receive one of the bras following a mastectomy in November.

She said: “Catherine gave me the bra on the day of my operation and I thought it was a lovely gesture. It was a real boost

to know I was being thought about and it made me feel really well looked after.

“The bras have been extremely well designed. The front opening is very thoughtful and practical and the broad straps are comfortable and easily adjustable – ideal when you recovering after an operation and are still sore and in some discomfort.

“This was my second bout of cancer and the RUH has seen me through both. I can’t fault the care and support I’ve received.”

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and will affect around one in 10 women during their life.

It can now be treated very effectively and most women who develop breast cancer will be permanently cured following treatment.

However, they will need regular breast cancer surveillance with mammography.

The Children’s Therapies department at Bath’s Royal United Hospital is to benefit from a donation of almost £6,000 thanks to schools and youth groups who took part in Ted’s Big Day Out. The event returned this year as part of The Forever Friends Appeal’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

More than 20 schools and youth groups across the region joined the fundraising drive to help raise funds for specialist children’s therapy equipment.

The school children loved meeting the charity’s mascot Big Ted who visited a number of schools on the day including Widcombe Infants, Oldfield Park Junior School, Bathford Primary, The Paragon School and Warminster School.

Cheque it out - children benefit from Co-op kindness Oldfield Park Pre-School children got their little hands on a large cheque for their school.

They donned their uniform and went along to a local branch of Co-op supermarket which helped to raise nearly £2,900 via its local causes initiative.

The money will fund a trip to the theatre for children aged 2-4 and a makeover of an outdoor learning space.

Pre-school manager Carron Cummins said: “We are thrilled with the donation from the Co-op local community fund and look forward to enhancing children’s experiences in the pre-school.

“We are a charity-run pre-school, supporting local children and families so this will really benefit the Oldfield Park community as a whole.”

This month the pre-school will be using some of the money to take its 28 children to see Snow Mouse at the Egg, Theatre Royal Bath.

It recently relocated to new premises at Oldfield Park Infants School and will spend the rest of the donation on improving

its outdoor learning area with new surfacing, equipment and outdoor planting. This encourages children to learn

about the outdoor environment.

We’re all recycling - but new video shows how we can do a lot more to help the environment If you need some extra motivation to recycle – or want to find out what happens to your excess material and food – then read on.

A fascinating four-minute video shows how your food waste is collected and turned into electricity which powers thousands of homes in the region.

Meanwhile, Bath and North East Somerset Council has donated £8,000 raised from the recycling of metals reclaimed from Haycombe Crematorium to a charity.

The council has partnered with recycling and renewable energy company GENeco to show people how their food waste is first shredded out of its plastic bags, made into ‘soup’ and then ends up as renewable energy and on farmland as nutrientrich fertilizer. The video shows a ‘circular economy’ where nothing is wasted and any plastic is sent

for recovery locally and it also shows that: • 10 million tonnes of food waste is processed every year in the UK • 7 million tonnes of the waste is from people’s homes, which when recycled produces enough energy to power 1 million households, the equivalent of the population of Birmingham • Bath and North East Somerset’s food waste all goes to a depot in Keynsham for the first stage of its processing, before continuing its journey to GENeco’s state-of-theart digestion facility in Avonmouth • Most of the resulting renewable energy goes back into the National Grid to power 7,000 homes in the region.

“If every home in our district recycled its food, it would create enough electricity to power 1,140 homes for a year.”

Food waste incorrectly placed in black wheelie bins costs more than £100 per tonne to dispose of in local facilities. It can also cause greenhouse gases if it ends up in landfill.

Recycling more food waste through the weekly service helps save money that could be used to fund other essential services for residents and also helps the environment.

ere is another example of how recycled material can be used in positive ways.

Common items like medical pins, metal plates and artificial joints are retrieved from the cremated remains of a loved one and recycled through a national not-for-profit Recycling of Metals Scheme.

It is run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management of which B&NES Council is a member. Members collect metal from the cremators and the money raised from recycling is divided between ICCM members for distribution among charities.

The council donated £8,000 raised from the recycling of metals reclaimed from Haycombe Crematorium in Whiteway Road to the Treehouse charity.

Treehouse provides bereavement support to children and young people under the age of twenty five following the loss of a loved one.

Trustee Faye Auty said: “These funds will go a long way in helping bereaved children, young people and their carers manage the challenges following bereavement.

“Our group programmes enable participants to move forward with the help of our staff, volunteers and their peers.

“We are extremely grateful for this significant donation. It will help a large number of children, young people and their carers.”

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services, said: “I’m pleased we’ve been able to support the essential work of Treehouse.

“By providing support and therapy the charity helps

many young people who are experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions, following the death of a loved one, cope with their grief.

n THE DRAGONFLY JAR ... rail-roaded Jeanne Fairs: Mid-life musings

A

s rail timetables change and fares go up, it may seem untimely to mention that I have got to know Great Western Railways (GWR) quite well recently. I’m no frequent ‘flyer’, but I like their upgraded carriages, friendly staff and streamlined logo. I’ve even downloaded their app.

Rail travel is now uncharacteristically calm for I can reserve a front-facing seat and have hot beverages delivered directly to my seat. The only problem with the app is that it fails to mention when a seat reservation is lost because carriages have been cut; I consequently find myself 20 minutes into a London trip and standing in the aisle.

Because there are more passengers than seats, many of us are now furring up the aisle arteries and standing firm until we can by-pass Swindon. GWR do still intend to run the catering trolley down the carriage aisle though and two uniformed staff valiantly attempt to do the impossible; they wheel their food trolley through the standing travellers.

It’s Saturday and there is no commuter rail rage. Standing passengers retain their humour and attempt the air hostess aisle shuffle we all perfect on long-haul flights; we have no passing points unless we agree to sit on the lap of a seated passenger in an uncomfortable GWR version of spooning.

Suddenly total strangers are embracing an inner Dunkirk and talking to each other. Ironically the drinks trolley is now redundant for everyone is sharing flasks and biscuits.

An on-board hen party becomes dispersed when the lack of seats became evident – their plastic flutes of prosecco become detached from the intended recipients. Soon a Mexican wave of glasses finds its way down the aisle to the diluted pink conga and some rugby fans join the party, ‘there’s a pint coming down with one of these girls, mate; wish the bride luck!’.

A time to reflect

ITH a new year comes the opportunity to reflect, take stock of the last 365 days and plan for the year ahead. I'm very proud of what the OPCC and the Constabulary have achieved in 2019 but am aware there’s always plenty more to be done. As your PCC, I will continue to act as a fierce advocate for victims and as your voice in policing.

I would also like to challenge you to do something different by getting involved in your local policing service in 2020. Volunteers play a vital part in assisting me in my role and make a huge difference in ensuring our local communities are safe

and feel safe. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and it is always a privilege to work alongside so many people who selflessly give up their time. Find out more about volunteering roles on the PCC’s and Constabulary’s website.

As always in December, Avon and Somerset Police launched Op Tonic, a monthlong campaign that includes high visibility and covert patrols to target drink and drug drivers. Over the festive period, many of us have been having fun and celebrating with friends and family. But remember, driving under the influence of drink or drugs is a serious crime that can devastating consequences.

Even being ‘slightly’ over the

limit will still land you with a penalty if you’re caught and it’s really not worth the risk.

I know officers have been working hard to keep the roads of Avon and Somerset safe during the festive period.

I believe that local people support the police in doing all they can to bring offenders to justice so they can ensure our roads are safe to use over Christmas and New Year, as well as the whole year round.

Finally, I want to take a moment to think about the people who have been working hard day and night over Christmas and New Year to ensure our safety and protection. It’s always an extremely busy time of year for those who work in emergency services and I

Panto stars visit youngsters in hospital - oh yes they did!

Stars from the Theatre Royal Bath’s Christmas pantomime met young patients and their families at the Royal United Hospital.

They visited the Children’s Ward dressed in their colourful stage costumes.

Cast members including Wendi Peters, Jon Monie, Nick Wilton, Shaun Dalton and Marcus Knibbs spent time chatting to patients and staff before returning to the stage for the matinee performance of Beauty & The Beast.

Ms Peters, well known on TV for her roles in Coronation Street and Hetty Feather, said: “We really enjoyed taking a flavour of Beauty & The Beast from the Theatre Royal to the Children’s Ward and having a chat with everyone there.

“The hard-working staff on the ward are a constant source of inspiration, we can’t praise the job they do highly enough.

“We were given such a lovely welcome and talking to the children and their parents was a huge pleasure.”

Mr Monie, who hails from Bath, said: “It was an honour to meet so many wonderful young patients today and the staff who are caring for them.

“It’s especially difficult being unwell and having to stay away from home over the Christmas holidays.

“Some of the children told us they’re looking forward to seeing

the pantomime when they leave hospital, so it was lovely to meet them on the ward before they visit us at the theatre to see the show.”

The pantomime stars also visited the annual Boost Christmas Party for pre-school children with complex needs.

The cast were driven to the

hospital in their pantomime costumes in a mini-coach generously provided by local company Berkeley Coach and Travel.

During their visit they handed out goodie bags to the children, supplied by Bath-based accountants Moore.

RUH play specialist Jo Powell

said: “Thank you to all the panto cast for making this a special day on the ward.

“Play and entertainment is a crucial part of the care we offer children and young people – it helps them while they are in hospital and can have a big influence on their recovery and overall hospital experience.”

n SCHOOL NATIVITY PLAYS The festive season saw school pupils delight their audiences with a number of nativity displays.

Oldfield Park Junior School assembled an enormous cast of young performers for their show ‘It’s Chriiistmas’.

Proud headteacher Dave Goucher said: “A HUGE well done to the whole school for the amazing performance.

“Indeed, it was immense and I was so proud of all involved for putting on a great show.

“Thanks to all, especially to Mrs Tapscott, our dedicated staff and Rev. Robert and the team for putting it all together, as well as our cracking children!”

Widcombe Infant School’s Christmas nativity was titled ‘Prickly Hay’.

All children took part and put on three afternoon displays. Families were given two free tickets each and made a contribution to the costs of the production.

St Michael’s Church Junior School in Twerton invited in a pair of companies to put on the shows Wizard of Oz and Mother Goose which had an anti-bullying theme.

Coach so proud as rugby lads fall narrowly short in final A strong campaign for Beechen Cliff School rugby team ended with a narrow loss in the final of the AASE league.

Beechen led St Paul’s Catholic College 20-14 at half-time thanks to tries from Victor Webb and Jasper Spandler.

But their opponents’ strength in depth saw St Paul’s turn the game around and win 31-23 at Allianz Park.

AASE, or Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence, is a competition for 16 to 18-year-olds and Beechen is partnered with Bath

Rugby to bring the best out of their students’ talent.

Bath Rugby performance pathway coach Ryan Davis has led the boys to two straight finals and gave his thoughts after the game in an interview for the club.

He said: “I’m incredibly proud and gutted at the same time, it’s quite a weird emotion right now. “[Comparing] where we were 18-20 weeks ago and where we are today, we’ll be very proud that we got this far. And we showed a lot of resilience to get out of our pool and come away with some really good wins. “[I’m a bit] upset the boys couldn’t go that little bit further and get the win. But they’ll take this and remember this for the next 10-15 years so it’s ultimately a good thing.

Adult Non Fiction

Lowborn: growing up, getting away and returning to Britain’s poorest towns - Kerry Hudson, as reviewed

by Hilary Cox from Midsomer Norton Library & One Stop Shop here are many stories about the great, the good, and the wealthy, but very little from the perspective of someone “lowborn”: someone in poverty, dependent on councils and landlords for a home, a single parent family which struggles. Kerry’s style is accessible and honest, without being sentimental or laboured. I feel all she is asking for is respect, and that the reader trusts her, trusts that she is telling her story with honesty.

The premise of this book is how someone who starts life lowborn

manages to cross the educational, and therefore financial and cultural, divide when they go to university and obtain a degree. It is a biography of Kerry’s upbringing, interlaced with life today in communities where poverty, mental health and negativity are the staple diet. She doesn’t seek sympathy or pity as she recalls the desperate rooms she and her mum lived in, which they called home.

Kerry weaves memories of her childhood of her extended family and the different schools she went to with revisits to the same towns today and chats with the locals.

Kerry remembers long coach journeys to another far-flung town in Scotland or England as her mum optimistically chased dreams of a better life but found it was invariably worse. I found this book was very readable and enlightening.

Not always an easy read but threw light on how some families live their lives through no fault of the own.

Lose Weight for Good – Tom Kerridge eap into 2020 with a great cook book from the famous chef Tom Kerridge and start the New Year feeling healthier and fitter. Tom Kerridge starts the introduction with a true statement – it is impossible to stick to diet, in particular if the food is boring and doesn’t fill you up. So he has developed a recipe book that he believes will help you lose weight and taste absolutely fab.

So there is a rich chilli with tortillas, a simple beef pot roast and my particular favourite – baked doughnuts with sweet five-spice dust. Enjoy!

Adult Fiction Now we shall be entirely free – Andrew Miller This is a beautiful piece of fiction from the author of the book Pure.

I have recommended this book to so many people. It begins in 1809 on a cold winter’s night when an unconscious man is carried into a house in Somerset.

This man is Captain Lacroix, a wounded solider from the Napoleonic War in Spain.

He is deeply traumatised by an incident in Spain and when he is commanded to return to his regiment, he instead decides to head out to the Hebrides, where he hopes to learn more about the local music.

However on his tail is a vicious English corporal and a Spanish officer with a mission to catch up with him. Lacroix’s journey takes him along the Irish Sea from Bristol, to the crowded city of Glasgow to finally a beautiful, remote Scottish Isle. His journey leads to friendship, and even love but freedom for Lacroix comes at a high price.

This book is full of suspense but also enthralling and very immersive.

Children’s Fiction Hetty Feather - Jacqueline Wilson, reviewed by Lila Conlon This is a fiery tale of girl who is abandoned by her mother, as a baby. It follows her story as she is given to a foster family then returned to a foundling hospital 6 years later. Hetty makes friend and foe along the way, as she tries to discover who her mother is. This is an entertaining and well written story about a fierce and determined girl.
