Live Auction The Guildhall, Bath, BA1 5AW Thursday, 1st October Drinks Reception at 7pm Auction at 8pm Is your wall in need of a Gruffalo? Do you long to have some Aliens in Underpants in your office? Is the school library lacking an illustration by new Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell? On 1 October we’re auctioning 15 specially commissioned one-off pieces – depicting famous characters sitting in the Bath Children’s Literature Festival big red storytelling chair. The auction includes work from: Axel Scheffler, Chris Riddell, Ben Cort, Nick Sharratt, Korky Paul, Liz Pichon, Steven Lenton, Kristina Stephenson, David Melling, Sarah McIntyre, Mini Grey, Laurence Anholt, Michael Foreman, Alison Jay, and David Roberts. To view them before the night pop into the Framing Workshop in Walcot Street or wander along to the Sofa.com in the Corridor Arcade. Axel Scheffler Original Art. The Gruffalo Axel Scheffler is the best-selling, award-winning illustrator of many of the world’s favourite picture books. Perhaps best-known for his collaborations with Julia Donaldson including the modern classic The Gruffalo, which has sold over five million copies worldwide and been translated into 50 languages. 5

Laurence Anholt Original Art. Ink and watercolour on ‘Fabriano 100% cotton watercolour paper’

The illustration is based on characters from Camille and the Sunflowers a story about Vincent Van Gogh and Camille Roulin, who was the son of the famous postmaster in Arles. Laurence Anholt is an author/illustrator of more than 200 children’s books, published in over 40 languages and notable for their upbeat and humorous approach to important issues. Laurence’s first Young Adult novel The Hypnotist will be published by Random House Penguin in October 2016.

Ben Cort Original Art Ben Cort is the illustrator of the multi award winning book Aliens Love Underpants, which along with the other titles in the Underpants series has sold over 2 million copies worldwide. He has illustrated numerous other picture books including Octopus’s Garden by Ringo Star and The Scottish Children’s Book Award winner Jumblebum by Chae Strathie.

Alison Jay Original Art Alison Jay is the acclaimed illustrator of many picture books, including The Cloud Spinner, written by Michael Catchpool, and A Gift for Mama, by Linda Ravin Lodding. Alison’s signature style is created using alkyd paint on thick cartridge paper, with a crackle varnish, giving an aged effect. 8

Mini Grey Original Art. Quink, ink, liquid watercolours and coloured pencil on heavyweight cartridge paper. The picture features Hermelin the Detective mouse reading The Scarlet Claw in the red chair. Mini Grey’s books include Biscuit Bear (winner of the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Award), Traction Man is Here (winner of the Boston Horn Book Award and shortlisted for the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal) and The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon.

David Melling Original Art. Hugless Douglas David Melling became a freelance illustrator in 1986 drawing for magazines and advertising agencies. In 1993 he illustrated his first children’s book. He first wrote and illustrated his own picture book The Kiss That Missed, in 2002, which was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway award. To date he has illustrated over 60 books. 10

Winnie loves reading and especially to Wilbur, and what could be more comfortable than seated in The Bath Festival Red Chair bolted on to her broomstick. She is seen in the illustration flying over the dreaming Spires of Oxford with chilled pumpkin juice in hand reading to a very nervous Wilbur.

Chris Riddell Original Art Chris Riddell, the 2015-2017 UK Children’s Laureate, is an accomplished writer and illustrator. His books have won a number of major prizes, including the 2001 and 2004 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medals. Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse won the Costa Children’s Book Award 2013. 14

Bath-based illustrator Steven Lenton is the illustrator of the best-selling Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam series which was both the Waterstones picture book of the month and The Times Children’s Book of the Week. He is also the illustrator for Frank Cottrell Boyce’s fiction and Orchard’s Fairytale Frankie picture book series. 15

Michael Foreman Original Art. The artwork is painted in watercolour on Langton watercolour paper. Michael Foreman is one of the best-known and most prolific writers and illustrators of children’s books. He has collaborated with many great authors including Michael Morpurgo and Terry Jones. Bockingford 190lb paper, black waterproof ink and rowneys red acrylic ink. “I do not enjoy drawing chairs really, all those legs and spindles, usually not nearly as successful as Van Goghs Effort, so the word ‘RED’ was immediately more appealing. My first few ideas were all a bit predictable, and I was in a sort of mood to reject teddy bears, I guessed there would be enough of them, RED, RED, RED... and a bullfighters cape popped up. I can’t remember there being much in the world of childrens books about bullfighting, So it appealed me.“

The story revolves around Zot, who comes to earth to steal all the colour. The last of which is the orange of the boys balloon. Rob Biddulph Signed Limited Edition Print 1/1 The piece features Penguins Blue, Flo and Jeff, Clive the polar bear and Wilbur the seal from Blown Away. Oh, and a cheeky monkey who has mysteriously found himself in the antarctic. They are all enjoying a lovely book about a crocodile in a bath, except for Wilbur who is having a bit of kite trouble. Again. Rob Biddulph is a children’s author and illustrator. His first picture book Blown Away won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2015. 23 His second book GRRRRR! was published by HarperCollins this year.

Fred Blunt Signed Limited Edition Print 1/1 The picture features Captain Falsebeard, from Fred’s debut picture book for Pufffin, Captain Falsebeard, in a very fishy tale. Fred Blunt has worked on all manner of projects, including editorial, advertising and designing animations for the BBC. He now works mostly in children’s books. 24

I also wanted to introduce a little Gothic sour into all that general Red Chair sweetness.”

The piece includes characters from published and unpublished books. There are characters from Bye-Bye Baby Brother!, Bruno and Titch, The Powers (a fiction series by Kevin Stevens) and After Happily Ever After - Cinderella’s Big Day (by Katie Cotton). Sheena decided to make the red chair into a bath and added as much fun and humour as possible.

This red chair features Slodge, who is the main character from The First Slodge. Here he is having a cosy time enjoying some of his books whilst munching on his biscuits and fruit – one of his favourite pastimes. Jenni Desmond’s first picture book Red Cat Blue Cat won the 2013 Cambridgeshire Read It Again Award. She was the 2014 illustrator for the National Portrait Gallery 30 Family Trail, and has exhibited her work widely including in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Thomas Docherty Original Art. Acrylic ink and watercolour on watercolour paper. Eliza Brown reads to The Snatchabook – from Helen and Thomas Docherty’s award winning book of the same name. Thomas writes and illustrates his own books as well as working with authors, such as his wife Helen and bestselling author Jenny Colgan. His book Little Boat was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2009. 31

Catalina Echeverri Signed Limited Edition Print. Created using Photoshop and a Graphic Tablet. The piece features Amelia and Pierre, the two main characters from There’s a Dinosaur in my Bathtub. In particular this illustration draws inspiration from one of the instances in the book were Pierre (Amelia’s French Dinosaur Friend) takes her to the moon to have galactic chocolate and marshmallow stars. 33

Sophy Henn Signed Limited Edition Print 1/1. Drawn using a soft pencil and photocopy paper. Then, using a light box and more paper, Sophy drew each element of the illustration individually. She scanned them in, coloured them and moved them around on her iMac! The picture was printed at a fine art printers using giclee printers on archival paper.

He joined the crew working on Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride in 2005. Since 2008, Ben has been working as a Children’s Book Illustrator and he also produces screen prints and digital artwork to exhibit. He illustrated Callum’s Incredible Construction Kit which won the Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book prize 2013.

The big red chair sits on a small ice floe, which seemed the most appropriate location to combine characters from two of Layn’s recent picture books: the girl and the snowman from You Make Me Smile (OUP 2013) and the seafaring boy and his dog from I’ll Catch You If You Fall (Written by Mark Sperring, OUP 2015).

The character on the red chair is the bear from Bear Hug (Templar, 2014). The whole book was illustrated in paper collage. The book is set in woodland and Katherine liked the idea of depicting the Red Chair in the same environment. The bear is reading Bear Hug and has cup of tea, for extra comfort!

Dave McKean has written a multi-media show with sax player Iain Ballamy and poet Matthew Sweeney for the Manchester Jazz and Literature Festivals called An Ape’s Progress. Inspired by Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, it’s an immigrant’s tale, set in Manchester, starring an ex Chinese circus monkey. 53

The fabric of the red chair is taken from a spotted headscarf which started out as blue and white but was altered in Photoshop. The characters are from Shouty Arthur, and Sedric and the Great Pig Rescue (Egmont) and Enormouse and Daisy’s Big Dig (Frances Lincoln).

Julius Zebra is play-fighting his gladiator chum, Cornelius the warthog. Julius and Cornelius are two gladiators starring in the book, Julius Zebra: Rumble With The Romans (Walker Books 2015). Gary has been writing and drawing comics and books for 13 years, including strips for the Beano, The Dandy, The Phoenix and National Geographic Kids. Julius Zebra: Rumble With 56 The Romans is his first illustrated novel.
