From June 16th - August 13th 2023, Bath on the Beach appears like magic at the edge of the park – a perfect place to chill with friends, sipping summer cocktails beneath palm trees or make the most of the good weather and challenge your friends to the free beach games. Jenga, anyone? Booking recommended for tickets to the adventure golf next door. bathonthebeach.co.uk
Bath Carnival is one of the best events in the Summer calendar. The city will come to life on 8th July 2023 with a whole day of colour, music and joyful celebration brought

to you by a huge team of volunteers. The parade goes through the city centre in the afternoon, concluding with a free party festival at Sydney Gardens and late night after party. UNDER THE CANOPY OF URBAN TREES
In the 18th and 19th centuries, visitors to Bath were encouraged to ‘take the cure’. This meant more than just bathing in the warm mineral waters. It called for people to embrace a radical new concept – walking for pleasure. The city was designed to encourage promenading for pleasure, with elegant crescents, new landscaped parks, pleasure gardens and paths into the surrounding countryside. Our urban environments can positively address a wide array of modern ailments including anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness and obesity. The passionate volunteers and tree lovers at Bath Urban Treescape have made it easier to enjoy walking amongst Bath’s urban trees and share a range of suggested routes via bathurbantreescape.com
The talented team from BRLSI have created the Tree Gazing Trail, available online, which is a great way to get the whole family talking about trees while they walk. tinyurl.com/3f6rfzwn

TREE HEROES
More Trees B&NES is a not-for-profit community based organisation which works to grow, plant and care for trees in the local area. Set up in 2008, they have planted approximately 11,000 trees so far. Since 2020, they have been focussing on growing trees with local provenance, the trees they grow are then planted locally not further than 10 miles away. Working with a network of four community nurseries in and around Bath, the team plant and nurture seedlings which are then planted out across the district.

EASY WAYS TO SUPPORT BATH’S INDIES
If you don’t want to live without Bath’s wonderful independent businesses, make sure you show them your support...
Bath’s independent businesses offer choice, tradition and innovation, as well as a personal and passionate service. Indies create jobs and have a positive impact on the city’s economy, supporting local artists and designers, food producers and growers.

Supporting the businesses in your local area is a greener choice, and it has never been more important to show Bath’s independent entrepreneurs that you value everything they do.
There are so many great ways to show some love to the independent businesses you wouldn’t want to live without, and many of them don’t cost a penny! Our independent business directory makes it easier than ever before to remind yourself of old favourites, discover new treasures, plan your next indie trip to the city, and show your support on social media.
Here are some easy ways to support Bath’s independent businesses and show them that you care...
THE TOTALLY LOCALLY £5 CONCEPT
If everyone in Bath spent £5 a week in the city’s local independent shops or businesses, it would be worth an extra £17.3 million per year going into the local economy. Here’s how it’s worked out using Totally Locally’s £5 concept:
£5 X 66,644 (approx. adult population of Bath) X 52 (weeks in the year) = £17, 327, 440
SUPPORT ON SOCIAL
Be sure to follow your favourite indie brands on social media and engage with their content. By liking, commenting on, sharing or saving a post, you help their posts to reach more potential customers.
TELL YOUR FRIENDS
Independent businesses with small marketing budgets benefit enormously from word-of-mouth recommendations. If you have had a great experience, be sure to tell your friends or post an endorsement on social media.
INTRODUCING NEW INDIES
These last months, we were delighted to welcome new indies in town:
For a night out: BudoBa on Argyle Street offering Japanese small bites in a relaxed setting with Japanese whisky, cocktails, and shochu, Edesia on High Street for South-American inspired meals and cocktails.
DISCOVER NEW BRANDS
There are so many independent businesses to discover in Bath. Make a list of indies you’ve never visited before and pledge to stop by this Summer. Your visit will make a world of difference!
GIVE THE GIFT OF INDIES
If you’re looking for a gift for a loved one, you are bound to find the perfect present at one of Bath’s indies. Many businesses offer gift cards, which are perfect for those who are difficult to buy for, or you can purchase a Bath Gift Card, which is accepted at over 220 businesses in the city.
For a sweet treat: Mokoko Coffee & Bakery on Newark Works, making viennoiserie and naturally leavened bread daily.
To shop: Vintage Abs on Upper Borough Walls, Sobeys on Northumberland Place, or Avonvale Carpets on Kingsmead Street.
There is always a new business to discover in Bath!
EASY WAYS TO SUPPORT BATH’S INDIESBATH’s INDIE NEIGHBOURHOODS

Each of Bath’s neighbourhoods has its own unique atmosphere, but all of them are filled with independent spirit.
Kingsmead
Square and Saw Close
With coffee shops, restaurants, street food and a world-famous cocktail bar, Kingsmead Square is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by. Just around the corner from Kingsmead Square is Saw Close, the centre of Bath’s theatre district, which is home to the Theatre Royal Bath and the community owned Komedia brings music and comedy in Bath. The area also boasts a plethora of eateries, from woodfired pizza at The Oven to the Bath institution that is Schwartz Bros.
Green Park Station
Green Park Station is a former railway station that is now a unique shopping venue, lined with independent shops and stalls, as well as the popular Bath Pizza Co. The beautiful cast-iron roof provides year-round shelter and houses regular bustling markets.
Milsom Street Quarter
The stylish Milsom Street is well-known for being home to one of the world’s oldest department stores, but you will also discover some independent gems on your wanders. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Milsom Street is Milsom Place, where you will find an array of shops and restaurants, including Chanii B, the home of internationally-renowned shoe designer Chantal Pilon and The Gaff a small-plate restaurant.
Artisan Quarter
The Walcot Street area of Bath has held the informal title of Bath’s Artisan Quarter since the 1960s, and brings together a vibrant collection of characterful independent shops and restaurants. Whether you are looking for quirky second-hand clothes or classic comics, Walcot Street has you covered. There are some lovely restaurants lining the street, and you will also find one of Bath’s institutions, the community-owned Bell Inn.
Abbey Quarter
Abbey Green is a historic cobbled square that is home to a nineteenth-century London Plane tree. Wander around the Abbey Quarter and you will find a wonderful selection of independent shops and eateries. bathabbeyquarter.com
Widcombe
Head over the footbridge behind Bath Spa Station and you will find Widcombe Parade, offering everything from coffee houses to gift shops, and even a gin distillery. Just up the road, you will find Widcombe Social Club, a community-focused venue offering live music and comedy nights.
Larkhall
Sitting on the edge of the city, Larkhall’s village atmosphere is bolstered by independent shops including Larkhall Butchers, a farm shop, delis, florists and even a co-operative printing workshop.
Moorland Road
Based in the popular Oldfield Park area, the bustling Moorland Road is home to independent retailers aplenty. Find a wide range of hardware products at Francis DIY, which first opened in 1967, stock up on essentials at Bath’s first refill store, Newleaf Healthfoods, and tuck into out-of-thisworld burgers from Magu Diner, or award-winning fish and chips from The Oyster Shell.
Bear Flat
Named the second-best place to live in the South West by the Sunday Times last year, Bear Flat has a tight-knit community and an impressive range of independent shops and eateries, including the Good Bear Café, where 2014 Masterchef winner Ping Coombes hosts supper clubs, and Menu
Gordon Jones, a stylish contemporary restaurant with a long waiting list.
Weston
Originally a separate village, Weston is now a suburb in north-west Bath that is home to cosy cafés, takeaways, and a friendly pub.
Union and Northumberland Passages
One of city’s best kept secrets, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets but just seconds away from Bath’s tourist destinations. Described by Jane Austen as ‘“this interesting passageway”, this characterful area is crammed with independent cafes, coffee shops, jewellers, pubs, and gift shops.

MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES
MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES
We speak to Nicholas Wylde, Founder of Wylde Jewellers on Northumberland Place.
Tell us a bit about your business...
I opened the Bath store in 1987 with 12 rings in the window. I always wanted to be an innovator and to have a window where jewellery loving clients would stop and admire my pieces. The Wylde Flower Diamond® must be my proudest achievement. I set out to deliver unique jewellery and it was a goal from the very start to have my own cut of diamond and I launched this unique patented, diamond on my 25th anniversary. It sparkles more than a round brilliant cut, and has a beautiful romantic flower reflecting from the bottom of the stone. I am also very proud to have twice won, the national award for Best Jewellery Retailer in the UK.
Why Bath?
I grew up in Birmingham and went to the Jewellery College there. At 20, I arrived in Bath as a trainee jeweller and haven’t looked back. I like Bath, as it is a little bubble of happiness. When the sun is out, the music is in the streets, the cafes are buzzing and all the festivals are being enjoyed, where could be nicer? It’s a big city with a little footprint, easy to visit the cultural attractions and to stroll around the streets seeking out the small and friendly independent shops and restaurants.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath.
There are always new and exciting things popping up in and around Bath. Bristol’s Pieminister has opened a restaurant at the start of the year. This is what Bath’s about, strolling around, looking up at the architecture, discovering the side streets, enjoying the cafes, and visiting the places you stumble across.
What would be your perfect day in Bath?
Living in Bath is wonderful. I would enjoy a spa and a gin. Together is perfect! We are spoiled for choice with spas. My perfect day would start with a treatment at Neal’s Yard and a visit to the main Thermae Spa or I would try the beautifully restored outdoor Cleveland Pools. Then it’s off to the Gin Bar to meet friends and to soak up the atmosphere of the city. Which Gin to choose? There are so many! It has to be Bath Gin of course! There are so many lovely restaurants to choose from, but we would probably finish a special day going to The Walcot in Walcot Street as it is one of our favourites.
Your top indie recommendation in Bath?
Bath has always been known as a shopping destination. I would recommend walking up to Margaret’s Buildings, down through Bartlett Street, on to Walcot Street, through the Guildhall Market, into Northumberland Place and down to Abbey Green. You can find Rossiters of Bath a small independent department store in Broad Street, Gabucci menswear in Milsom Street, and Moss Hi-Fi on James Parade who has been trading over 35 years. There are some great new independents like Always Sunday, Chapter 22 (a lovely florist and café) and the Botanica Studio near us to name just a few.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
Summer and Christmas are wonderful times to be in Bath. Seeing people enjoy the city is very important to me. There are many people behind the scenes working hard to deliver the festivals, monthly events, the Christmas market etc. to create the ‘all year-round’ atmosphere that makes Bath so special.

MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES
We speak to Dylan who runs Dylan’s Moda Barbers in the Corridor.
Tell us a bit about your business.
I began barbering at an early age and fell in love with the idea of instilling confidence in people regarding their appearance. I was lucky enough to bring my passion to fruition by establishing Dylan’s Moda Barbers in the heart of Bath in 2015 at the age of 19. It has been an amazing journey ever since. It’s given us a chance to meet an extraordinary number of individuals. Each conversation has given me insight into the different paths we embark on, and I will never get tired of hearing my clients’ stories. Our services, such as the hot towel shaves, flame on the ears and complimentary tea (Çay) have enabled people to enjoy a unique experience with us. We are very proud of it! Alongside being a proud sponsor of Bath Rugby, it feels like a big community of support and induces a feeling of togetherness.
Why Bath?
I fell in love with Bath instantly - everyone does! Bath has everything for every age group offering the convenience of living in a historic, vibrant city with a safe atmosphere. It’s filled with beautifully preserved architecture, plenty of green spaces to enjoy long walks in and around the stunning city centre. Bath stood out for all those reasons, and I wanted to leave my creative mark here. This motivated me to bring
a unique experience here. That’s where the idea of a men’s hairdresser providing contemporary Turkish barbering was born.
What do you do to spoil yourself?
I enjoy going out for long walks with my wife to have food and do some shopping. One of my favourites is our neighbour BathZaar which serves the best Turkish Coffee and desserts, such a delight! Concluding the day with a relaxing visit to the spa is always a nice treat.
Your top indie recommendation in Bath?
My top recommendation would be The Herd which has to be one of the best steakhouses I’ve ever been to. A newer place would have to be BathZaar - our neighbour that offers the best Turkish delights, desserts and coffees.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
The summer brings about a different energy, and the city livens up. The season brings Bath a lot of visitors, which keeps us busy, and the weather conditions are better, allowing us to enjoy the vast green spaces Bath has to offer. We cannot wait to enjoy the sunshine with our customers and give them the confidence they deserve.

MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES
Tell us a bit about your business?
We took over the Bath Backpackers few months ago. This is our first adventure as owners. Our offer is simple: we have fifty bunk beds all in shared rooms, and some lovely shared spaces guests can use and meet each other. Our central location is amazing for people arriving by train or bus. We’re really proud of the feeling of home and community that people comment on here, and our ongoing project to restore the building and its furnishings certainly contributes. The amazing crew of volunteers help make sure guests have a great time, they always give them quirky and tailored recommendations.
Why Bath?
We love Bath! It’s a beautiful, friendly and enjoyable place to live, with wonderful history, architecture and countryside, and always new cultural things to discover.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath.
The Grapes has become one of our favourites - great live music, super social and always open late. Landrace is fantastic - we love their cardamon buns, and their sustainability ethos. And the Share and Repair shop is a great new idea.
What do you do to spoil yourself?
First, breakfast at the Green Rocket over the road to fuel up a long walk. This could be through Victoria Park and over Kelston
Round Hill to the Bath Soft Cheese Cafe, or over Combe Down to the Weelwright Arms in Monkton Combe or the Packhorse in Southstoke - stopping at Dundas Aqueduct on the way back for a dip in the river when summer comes. We’d share food and drinks with guests, then head out all together to the Bell, followed by the Common Room for cocktails and a late dance, topped off by cheesy chips at Jimmy’s Van in front of Parade Gardens!
Your top indie recommendation in Bath?
We love Harvest - it’s great for refills and other well-sourced veggie products. They also have a great deli counter for lunch. Our current favourite is Chai Walla - Aris loves the falafel wraps, Kate is more of a samosa person. We’re both big readers, so Topping and Company are amazing neighbours.
Your favourite place to relax in Bath?
We love playing pool at Juno and it’s always a bit special for guests when we take them there too. Hostel life is so busy, we both have secret spots where we hide out to think and read, like the Central Library, or Parade Gardens when it’s warmer.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
Springtime in Bath is glorious! Lunch by the galleries of Brock Street outside the Green Bird is a regular pleasure. And we love a good cup of coffee outside Society Cafe in Kingsmead Square on a sunny afternoon.
We speak to Kate and Aris. They took over the Bath Backpackers on Pierrepont Street.

Check out their Instagram @mysmallworldtoys to get an insight into their playful and creative team.
