SPRING FESTIVALS

From literature, to food, comedy and music, Bath has an excellent range of festivals for you to attend this Spring.

First up is Topping & Company Booksellers who play host to some of the world’s most talented writers, including Michael Morpurgo, Lemony Snicket and Damon Galgut.

Bath Comedy Festival hits us right in the funny bone this April, with an

outstanding roster of up and coming talent, as well as household comedy names.

The Bath Festival starts in May and brings more talented writers, comedians and musicians to the city to entertain audiences in the beautiful venues and spaces of Bath.

In June, Pub in the Park returns for another weekend filled with awardwinning food, music and celebrity cooks. welcometobath.co.uk/whats-on

COMMUNITY MATTERS

In summer 2022 the Cleveland Pools Trust aims to re-open Britain’s oldest lido after a dedicated group of local volunteers tirelessly campaigned to save it from dereliction.

Thousands of supporters from far and wide have joined the campaign and today the Trust has a team of more than 100 volunteers who give their time freely: fundraising, engaging with the community, managing heritage assets, organising events and publicising progress. clevelandpools.org.uk

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS

Bath has been chosen to represent the South West of England in this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom competition national finals and will be in the small city category, Bath was chosen as a result of winning gold in last year’s South West in Bloom competition. It means Bath will be judged twice this year, the RHS finals will be judged late July or early August and the South West competition judged in early July.

Britain in Bloom was first held in 1964, and has been organised by the Royal Horticultural Society since 2002. The competition is entered by cities, towns and villages across the UK, and is divided

into categories so only communities of a similar size compete against each other.

Bath has a successful history of competing in Britain in Bloom, and the city was the national winner of the first ever competition in 1964. Since then, Bath has secured over 15 awards.

There will be plenty of bright blooms to discover around the city, with displays in Royal Victoria Park, Walcot Street, SouthGate Bath, Milsom Street and Milsom Place, Union Street, Upper Borough Walls and many more city spots.

SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

On World Book Day this year Mr B’s Emporium donated all of its profits from the day, to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, in a meaningful show of support to the people of Ukraine.

Mr B’s Emporium is a beautiful, energetic and innovative bookshop on John Street in the heart of Bath. It’s a bright labyrinthine space where bookrelated chatter and advice seems everpresent and you never know what you might encounter next, from claw-foot bath book displays to toilets illustrated

WORLD HERITAGE CENTRE

The Bath World Heritage Centre will officially open this spring!

Discover what makes Bath such a unique place and find out more about why the city is rated of Outstanding Universal Value, including: the hot springs, Roman remains, Georgian architecture, Georgian town planning, the social setting of the Georgian spa town and the city’s natural landscape setting.

Bath becomes the fourth city in the UK to open a Bare Grills restaurant, which offers hand pressed burgers, slow smoked meat and char-grilled steaks.

The much-loved micro brand is sure to be a hit for Bath city centre.

Cream Cornwall

The luxurious interior design brand is opening its first shop outside of Cornwall!

Patterns and products are designed from the studio above their flagship Falmouth shop, where inspiration is taken from Cornish heritage, colours and coastline.

AFTER LIFE AT SYDNEY GARDENS

Many will have tuned in to watch ‘After Life’ on Netflix, a TV series that follows Tony, portrayed

by Ricky Gervais, as he deals with the death of his beloved wife.

Inspired by the iconic park bench scenes in the series, Ricky Gervais teamed up with the charity CALM to donate 25 After Life benches to locations across the UK, where people can go to talk, listen and reflect.

Bath is lucky to have been donated a bench which is now installed at Sydney Gardens.

Kingsmead Square 10

E

ach of Bath’s neighbourhoods has its own unique atmosphere, but all of them are filled with independent spirit.

Kingsmead Square and Saw Close With coffee shops, restaurants, street food and a world-famous cocktail bar, Kingsmead Square is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by. Just around the corner from Kingsmead Square is Saw Close, the centre of Bath’s theatre district, which is home to the Theatre Royal Bath and also boasts a plethora of eateries, from wood-fired pizza at The Oven to the Bath institution that is Schwartz Bros.

Green Park Station Green Park Station is a former railway station that is now a unique shopping venue, lined with independent shops and stalls, as well as the popular Bath Pizza Co. The beautiful cast-iron roof not only provides year-round shelter, but also houses regular bustling markets.

Milsom Street Quarter The stylish Milsom Street is well-known for being home to one of the world’s oldest department stores, but you will also discover some independent gems on your wanders. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Milsom Street is Milsom Place, where you will find an array of shops and restaurants, including Chanii B, the home of internationally-renowned shoe designer Chantal Pilon, and Le Vignoble, a wine lounge offering selfservice beverages.

Artisan Quarter The Walcot Street area of Bath has held the informal title of Bath’s Artisan Quarter since the 1960s, and brings together a vibrant collection of characterful independent shops and restaurants.

Whether you are looking for quirky second-hand clothes or classic comics, Walcot Street has you covered. There are some lovely restaurants lining the street, and you will also find one of Bath’s institutions, the community-owned Bell Inn. walcotstreet.com Abbey Quarter Abbey Green is a historic cobbled square that is home to a nineteenth-century London Plane tree.

Wander around the Abbey Quarter and you will find a wonderful selection of independent shops and eateries, and on the last Sunday of every month, you can explore the vibrant Abbey Quarter Market. bathabbeyquarter.com Widcombe Head over the footbridge behind Bath Spa Station

BATH’S INDIE NEIGHBOURHOODS

and you will find Widcombe Parade, offering everything from coffee houses to gift shops, and even a gin distillery. Just up the road, you will find Widcombe Social Club, a community-focused venue offering live music and comedy nights.

Larkhall Sitting on the edge of the city, Larkhall’s village atmosphere is bolstered by independent shops including Larkhall Butchers, a farm shop, delis, florists and even a co-operative printing workshop.

Moorland Road Based in the popular Oldfield Park area, the bustling Moorland Road is home to independent retailers aplenty. Find a wide range of hardware products at Francis DIY, which first opened in 1967, stock up on essentials at Bath’s first refill store, Newleaf Healthfoods, and tuck into out-of-thisworld burgers from Magu Diner, or award-winning fish and chips from The Oyster Shell.

Bear Flat Named the second-best place to live in the South West by the Sunday Times last year, Bear Flat has a tight-knit community and an impressive range of independent shops and eateries, including the Good Bear Café, where 2014 Masterchef winner Ping Coombes hosts supper clubs, and Menu Gordon Jones, a stylish contemporary restaurant with a long waiting list.

Weston Originally a separate village, Weston is now a suburb in north-west Bath that is home to cosy cafés, takeaways, and a friendly pub.

The Lanes Incorporating Union Passage, Northumberland Passage and Northumberland Place, The Lanes make up one of the city’s best kept secrets, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets but just seconds away from Bath’s tourist destinations. Described by Jane Austen as ‘“this interesting passageway”, the characterful area is crammed with quirky cafes, jewellers, pubs, and gift shops.

Margarets Buildings The place to visit in Bath if you have an interest in art and interiors. Tucked along Brock Street between the Circus and the Royal Crescent, this area is a treasure trove of specialists in silverware, antiques and glass. Astonishingly there are 6 art galleries in this area, so it is a perfect spot to go browsing for inspiration. There is also a range of great independently owned eating places with 11 Green Bird Café also running evening events.

MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES

Topping & Company Booksellers Bath have opened the largest independent bookshop in England in living memory.

Last November, independent booksellers Topping & Company in Bath moved from the Paragon to York Street in the heart of the city, next door to Bath Abbey. The move marks the opening of the largest independent bookshop in living memory.

The bookshop is now housed in the impressive Georgian building on York street, formerly known as the Friends Meeting House. Operating as a bookshop is the latest chapter in the building’s rich history. It was initially designed as a Masonic Hall in 1817 by William Wilkins, architect of The National Gallery, was used as an assembly room and nonconformist chapel during the 1830s, and has since been in the hands of the Religious Society of Friends. It is a listed building of significant architectural heritage, being one of the few examples of the Greek revival style remaining in Bath. The bookshop houses handcrafted bookcases and Topping & Company Booksellers’ signature rolling library ladders lining two floors and a gallery.

Expanding has allowed an increase of the number of titles stocked to over 75,000 and an unparalleled selection of fiction, children’s books, cookery writing, history and much more.

The new bookshop still offers complimentary pots of fresh tea and coffee as you browse and friendly, bookish advice from a large team of expert booksellers.

What’s more, having such a vast space creates the opportunity for the bookshop to host larger events in the building itself and Topping & Company Bookseller’s look forward to inviting many of the biggest names in the literary world right to the heart of Bath. They aim to bring a vital injection of energy and purpose to Bath’s high street and cultural scene in our postpandemic landscape. They have already hosted authors such as Nigel Slater, Elizabeth Day, Michael McIntyre, Florence Given, and Yotam Ottolenghi this Autumn, and names such as Sally Rooney, Margaret Atwood, David Attenborough, and Buzz Aldrin in previous years.

Robert and Louise Topping opened their first bookshop in Ely (Cambridgeshire) in 2002, followed by Bath in 2007, St Andrew’s in 2014, and a large bookshop in Edinburgh in 2019. In Robert’s words, “there was an age where the Independents were the great bookshops Hatchards and Dillons (even Foyles where I worked) in London, Austicks in Leeds, Willshaws in Manchester, John Smiths in Glasgow and Thins in Edinburgh. It seems important, at this point in time, to be able to look to the future with some very positive news for Bath city centre.”

12 Trim Street, new to Bath, is a relaxed, open plan, happy hideaway to unwind and enjoy a range of hair and beauty treatments.

New independent business owners Emily and Layla have created a beautiful salon with a talented team for customers to be treated to the best styles, great coffee, good vibes and the friendliest service.

Why Bath?

Not only is Bath one of the world’s most beautiful cities, it’s filled with atmosphere from a mix of independent businesses, friendly community and the hustle and bustle of tourism. With a vision for our customers to have the ultimate, luxury service we felt that Bath offers the best and only place for us to create our brand and to build a loyal clientele.

How did it feel to be featured in Bridgerton?

It came as no real surprise that Netflix chose Bath for the filming of its no 1 series Bridgerton. Our beautiful shop front made it an easy pick to be featured as Gunther’s Tea Shop when Trim Street was transformed back in time. Even a year on the tour is still thriving and we get many tourists posing for photos outside the shop.

Top Indie recommendation in Bath?

Whilst Mondays are our boring admin day, it’s made far more enjoyable by some fabulous lunch spots around Bath. Rosarios has the best coffee and the friendliest service and Café Lucca in the sunshine has some lovely healthy food options.

What are you most looking forward to in Bath this year?

Bath offers such a variety of events all year round. We will be looking forward to the comedy festival at the Forum, Bath Boules charity event in Queens Square where we will be looking to take the title this year ha ha! We also hope to finally see back the Christmas market this year.

What are your plans for the future?

After a successful first year in such a difficult time to open a business mid lockdowns, we hope to keep growing our team and continue to delight everyone who visits 12 Trim Street. We plan on offering our space for online businesses to host pop up shopping events in the summer. Finally another salon party has been requested, this time bigger and better with an incentive to raise money for some of Bath’s incredible local charities.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

Hi my name is Nik and I have been running drag events in Somerset since 2016 - I also have done a lot of work as an LGBTQ+ activist in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. WIG! the drag night I run at Moles under my alter-ego “Mother” has been going since 2018, and it’s got a great reputation as one of the foremost queer cabarets in the South West - hosting both the best in local talent, as well as featuring queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and beyond!

What kind of work are you undertaking to support Ukraine?

In times of conflict, it’s often political minorities that get overlooked - including LGBTQ+ individuals. We wanted to give our support in a way that directly helps other queer people struggling in the conflict - so we’re donating money to Kyiv Pride, one of the biggest LGBTQ+ organisations in Ukraine. 25% of our ticket sales will go to charity and 100% of the profits of our raffle will go to Kyiv Pride - which has prizes from a variety of local businesses including Botanica Studios, Happy Donut Company and Wolf Wine.

We’re going to have performances from two Slavic drag performers - myself, and the incredible Stealia Jobs: known as The Queen of Poland. We’ll also have the extremely talented

Bristol drag King, Manly Mannington, and performances from Bath’s own pint-sized, pink, pop-punk princess, Remy Melee, and our current reigning Miss WIG!, “Canvas”.

Can others get involved?

Yes, just come along and buy a ticket and enjoy the show! War unfortunately influenced my childhood due to my ethnicity and extended family, and in times of conflict it is important to laugh - often aggressors want to scare us and diminish our spirits, so banding together and enjoying the brighter side of life is what we need.

So what better thing to do than come to a drag show?

Educate yourself - misinformation is one of Putin’s greatest weapons so take your time to learn a little about Ukraine. Keep your eyes peeled for other local events and organisations trying to do their best to help give relief to victims of the conflict!

meet bath’s indie Meet heroes

In 1978, despite heavy snow, Moles opened its doors for the first time to a crowd of friends, family and locals for a New Year’s Eve party.

Initially primarily a vegetarian cafe with jazz music, Moles blossomed into one of the most important small independent venues in the country. The first big band to take to the stage was The Smiths, who played to just 30 people. Having just released ‘Hand In Glove’, they became one of the most influential bands of the decade. In fact, this set the tone for the success of Moles, acting as a springboard for countless bands before they hit the big-time. Britpop behemoths Pulp (1985), Blur (1990) and Oasis (1994) all debuted here, firmly cementing Moles as a mainstay of the British music scene with both it’s stage and studio (which has recorded Biffy Clyro, Elbow and Portishead, amongst others!).

The noughties brought more artists on the precipice of popularity; in 2004 The Killers played the day before ‘Somebody Told Me’ was to be released, which would go to number three in the UK charts. Ed Sheeran played in 2011 whilst circuiting small venues promoting his debut album ‘+’, and Bastille concluded their 2012 tour here. A solid favourite with locals and beloved by bands, it seemed like Moles was unstoppable - until disaster struck.

During the night on 8th March 2014 an electrical fire blazed through the venue after hours, which led to smoke and water damage throughout the entire building. Luckily Mallory Knox, who had been recording in the studio, were all away for the weekend - the venue was empty and nobody was injured.

However, the venue was out of action for over a year while repairs were completed.

While this kind of catastrophe would have spelt the end for many small businesses, Moles bounced back thanks to its dedicated team and their hard work.

With a full refurb and brand new soundsystem, Moles was ready to throw its doors open with two sold-out shows in November 2015: Don Broco performing live followed

by Erol Alkan and Eats Everything DJing into the small hours. Since then, the big names have kept coming. Fatboy Slim rang in Moles’ 40th birthday in 2018 with ‘The Big Bou-tiki’, selling out in minutes and raising thousands of pounds for a local charity. Artists such as Nova Twins, Bury Tomorrow, John Newman and local celebrities Idles have graced the stage - either as burgeoning newcomers or established acts returning to their roots.

Even the pandemic was no match - with its doors closed, the venue continued to broadcast live music from local bands and at-home clubnights from the resident DJs. When seated entertainment returned, sit-in gigs became the new normal.

Now, things are looking brighter than ever for Moles. Live bands are back with a bang (Orlando Weeks and Beans on Toast among the most recent shows), and the appetite for clubnights is stronger than ever - especially with headliners like Jax Jones and Jodie Harsh on the decks! Music in Bath is here to stay - #longlivemoles.

For a laid-back lunch with your partner and friends, it has to be Walcot House on Walcot Street, which has a relaxed, informal atmosphere, friendly staff and great food – a hidden gem that is steadily becoming more popular.

For a special evening dinner, Henry’s Restaurant on Bartlett Street, next to Bath Assembly Rooms, is perfect. A small, intimate venue popular with locals, Henry’s provides individual service and fantastic food. You come away feeling well fed and well looked after.

Mjölk offers a taste of Sweden in the centre of Bath!

Positioned opposite the Roman Baths, this stylish and welcoming café run by Chris and his Swedish girlfriend Hannah opened in December 2020. It was of particular interest to me, as I have visited Sweden many times and enjoyed the ‘fika’ culture – making time to have a coffee and something to eat with friends.

I watched the business grow despite lockdown, providing takeaway hot and cold drinks and the most amazing cinnamon buns! Now, six months later, it is a thriving café with plenty of outdoor seating, selling sandwiches, cakes, wine and beer in addition to the cinnamon buns! A real success story in challenging times!

Anne recommends...

There are many wonderful independent businesses in Bath. My favourite has to be M&K Hardware in Bath Guildhall Market. There is an enormous range of DIY, garden and household items to be found in their two units. They also have very helpful staff, and as an added bonus, they were open all through 2020 to cater for any home disasters. A ‘must’ for any home-related item.

I should also put in a word for our local, The Claremont on Camden Road. To reopen with smiles on their faces is great after what they have been through.

My favourite independent in Bath is the lovely Ma Cuisine in Larkhall. Brigitte and Christophe cook delicious traditional French bistro cuisine – try the Weekend Takeaway as a special treat – and they also deliver frozen bistro meals to your door via their online shop. They are now open to eat on their tiny outside terrace, too (pre-booking is a must). I couldn’t possibly decide on my favourite dish, but the tarte au citron is fabulous!

Abi recommends...

There are so many brilliant independent businesses in Bath, a daytime favourite for me is the lovely Good Day Cafe. I love their coffee; and they have an incredible and beautifully presented selection of sweet treats. My personal favourite is the delicious blondies!

For the evening I really enjoy going to Widcombe Social Club. Widcombe is a great area of Bath and WSC has a great mix of live music and comedy which I enjoy as part of the Friday Night Socials. The setting is great as it overlooks the canals which you can particularly see from their waterside bar.
