MEET BATH’S MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES INDIE HEROES
We speak to Annette Dolan, Managing Director of Bath Aqua Glass in Walcot Street and Cheap Street...
Tell us a bit about Bath Aqua Glass...
Bath Aqua Glass has been in business in the city for 26 years. Originally working in stained glass, we quickly moved into glassblowing, and now offer glassblowing experiences alongside our glass items, which are sold at our two Bath stores and on our website. We still work in stained glass, too, with our Director Themis now offering stained glass-making courses from his bespoke stained glass studio. We also work with Bath-based businesses to provide their corporate glassware and gifts. We are passionate about the preservation of heritage arts, and love to share our knowledge at every opportunity.
Why Bath?
I relocated back to the South West after raising my children in Corsica and Surrey. I’m a true West Country girl at heart, and couldn’t imagine settling anywhere else than our vibrant city.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath…
The opening of the new Hampton by Hilton Bath City on Avon Street. I attended a fundraising event for Children’s Hospice South West (our charity bauble partner this year), and bid on a night away at this new hotel. With Bath Christmas Market preparation underway, my stay will be much appreciated!
What do you do to spoil yourself?
When things get stressful, there’s only one place to spoil yourself - Spa Room Bath! Located under Le Barbier on Walcot Street, Astrid is the city’s best kept secret for a massage. She also offers a range of beauty treatments, providing the perfect pampering pick-me-up.

Your top indie recommendation in Bath?
I would definitely recommend Tilian Kids. Specialising in children’s clothing, Nuray has branched into soft, warm adult knitwear, perfect for winter.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
We are of course looking most forward to the return of the annual Bath Christmas Market. We always have so much fun at our stall with our customers. Our lucky baubles are not just for Christmas!

WINTER WINTER WELLBEING WELLBEING
BATH’S SPA HERITAGE IS SET BATH’S SPA HERITAGE IS SET TO BE CELEBRATED AT AN TO BE CELEBRATED AT AN EXCITING NEW EVENT... EXCITING NEW EVENT...

WINTER WELLBEING
As well as being a vibrant and thriving twenty-firstcentury city, Bath has history and heritage in its DNA. That’s why it’s the only city in the UK to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeological evidence suggests there was human activity around the hot springs on which Bath is built as far back as 8,000 BC. Much later, in 863 BC, according to legend, Prince Bladud founded the city of Bath around the hot springs. Today, you can bathe in the same mineral-rich thermal springs that soothed the Romans 2,000 years ago at Thermae Bath Spa.
In July 2021, Bath, along with ten other historic spa towns, was inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, officially recognising the prominence and conservation of the city’s spa heritage and giving Bath its second UNESCO citation.
In February 2023, the city will be celebrating its wellness credentials with a new festival. ReBalance Bath will bring together venues, hotels, therapists and practitioners for a three-week celebration of wellness and the city’s connections to thermal waters. The festival will offer the perfect opportunity to rebalance, build resilience, and gear up to face challenges with confidence. Taking place from 7th to 26th February, the ReBalance Bath programme will include plenty of free events and taster sessions, alongside luxury spa hotel packages and bookable activities.
The festival will be centred around the seven pillars of wellness – physical, mental, social, financial, spiritual, vocational and environmental – as well as offering themed days including Motivational Mondays, Water Wednesdays, Food Fridays and Soulful Sundays.
Bath-based Olympian Amy Williams MBE has been announced as the official ambassador of the festival, which has been organised by the Bath BID.
Event highlights will include: ■ Aquasana at Thermae Bath Spa ■ Laughter yoga with The Vitality Studio ■ Guided meditation and sound baths at The Soul Spa ■ Motivational talks with the Bath Rugby Foundation ■ Cold water therapy at Cleveland Pools ■ Teen yoga ■ Ocean film showings at Komedia Bath ■ A book talk with Amy Williams MBE at Topping & Company ■ ReBalance Bath marketplace at Apex City of Bath Hotel

We speak to Madeline Blackburn, Founder and Director of The Soul Spa in Hetling Court...
Tell us a bit about Soul Spa...
Tucked away in Bath’s Spa Quarter, above the ancient healing waters of Bath, the Soul Spa is a place to take some time out and soothe your mind, body and soul. We run 30- and 60-minute sound baths every day, which is a wonderful way to deeply relax without having to get wet!
Why Bath?
Where do I start? Bath is unique in its history and environment; the sense of community and mutual support here is fabulous. It’s big enough so there’s always something to do, and small enough to feel like you belong.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath...
Yuup. This is a relatively new platform where you can book interesting and unusual local activities with Bath indies. I’ll definitely be heading to the website when I do my Christmas shopping!
What do you do to spoil yourself?
Spend an hour (or two if I can) ‘floating’ in the pod at Results Body+Mind. Complete sensory stillness allows my creative brain to roam free. I always have my best ideas there!
Your top indie recommendation in Bath?
You’ve got to love the Drawing Rooms. Tom’s passion and energy are infectious and he’s so supportive of indies in the city.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months?
There will be moment, I don’t know exactly when – maybe at Bath on Ice or during a quieter moment at Bath Christmas Market, maybe on the way to the panto or at my children’s Christmas carol concert – when that Christmas feeling sneaks in and fills my being. Just for a moment, the magic of the season is palpable, and I am a child again. That’s the moment I’m most looking forward to!

There’s definitely something in the water here in Bath. A true centre for relaxation, it’s one of the only places where you can bathe in natural hot springs. Whether it’s a spa day, a wellness weekend, or a longer retreat, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing break. Bath’s second UNESCO accreditation as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe underlines the influence the waters have on the city’s identity, from Roman Bath to present day.

ANY ANY QUESTIONS? QUESTIONS?
If you have a question or are looking for recommendations while you are in the city, the Bath BID Welcome Ambassadors are here to help...
These volunteers are the friendly faces of Bath, offering a warm welcome to all – look out for them as you wander around the city centre, or visit them at at Welcome Ambassador HQ at 11A York Street.
To inspire your visit to Bath, our Welcome Ambassadors share some of their favourite places in the city...
Marion Morris
“My favourite place in Bath is Parade Gardens – an oasis of peace in the middle of the usually bustling city. Parade Gardens enjoys a waterside location, with an interesting history, and architecture and statues within it.”
John Cox
“I once worked in an office in Abbey Chambers, overlooking Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths. A fantastic outlook and location and the start of my love affair with the Abbey Churchyard. During the day, Abbey Churchyard is alive with the buzz of visitors to the city and the sounds of buskers’ music. After dark, Abbey Churchyard takes on a different, slightly magical, character, with the torches around the Roman Baths reflecting the steam rising from the mineral waters and the Abbey illuminated by floodlighting.”
Brian Edwards
“One of my most favourite vistas in Bath is looking along the length of Great Pulteney Street, early in the morning when the sun has just risen, casting light and shadow along its length, when looking towards The Holburne Museum from Robert Adams’ Pulteney Bridge. It still manages to take my breath away.”
Jacqui Bender
“My favourite thing to do in Bath is to explore lesser-known places off the main shopping route. I am still stunned by the buildings and views you get around each corner, and every season brings different light on the gorgeous stone. I also love to get a good view over the city, from Alexandra Park and on the Bath Skyline Walk.”
