Bath has a wonderful independent scene, and we have put together Indie Bath to make it easier for you to discover and support the city’s independent businesses. KNEAD A HAND IN THE KITCHEN? Bath-based baker Richard Bertinet has been helping food lovers to bake mouth-watering bread at The Bertinet Kitchen since 2005. Now, baking novices and aficionados alike can take part in an interactive course with Richard via BBC Maestro, which offers online classes from some of the UK’s biggest household names, such as singer Gary Barlow and author Julia Donaldson.
Richard’s course offers 23 episodes on how to bake a broad selection of popular breads, including simple white baguettes, brioche buns, pizza, challah, flamiche, ciabatta, and bagels. Each episode lasts for around 20 minutes, and is accompanied by its own course notes. The course costs £80 for 23 episodes, with an additional festive episode expected to launch later in the year, exclusive to subscribers. bbcmaestro.com
COMMUNITY MATTERS
The Bell Inn has reached a significant milestone in its latest share offer. The unique and vibrant pub in Walcot Street has been owned and run as a community cooperative since July 2013, when 537 individuals pitched in to buy The Bell, raising £786,000. On 12th June, the pub reopened its share offer, with its target of £100,000 reached in just five days. This impressive feat gives the pub the security to proceed with necessary improvements and innovations to help provide for the community and remain a much-loved ‘local’ in the truest sense of the word. bellcommunity.org.uk 4

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS
This summer, Bath is welcoming people back with a floral flourish, as the city is entered into the annual Britain in Bloom competition.
Britain in Bloom was first held in 1964, and has been organised by the Royal Horticultural Society since 2002. The competition is entered by cities, towns and villages across the UK, and is divided into categories so only communities of a similar size compete against each other. Bath has a successful history of competing in Britain in Bloom, and the city was the national winner of the first ever competition in 1964. Since then, Bath has secured over 15 awards.
This year, there are plenty of bright blooms to discover around the city, with displays in Royal Victoria Park, Walcot Street, SouthGate Bath, Milsom Street and Milsom Place, Union Street, Upper Borough Walls and many more city spots. Floral fans can also stop off at one of the stunning parklets in Milsom Street, Kingsmead Square and Westgate Street to enjoy a drink or bite to eat from one of Bath’s indies and admire the colourful displays.

AN AMERICAN ANNIVERSARY
This year, American Dream Comics on Walcot Street is celebrating its (slightly belated) 25th anniversary, with offers and promotions aplenty. As well as hiding £25 worth of gift vouchers in the store every week, there will also be a new promotion on the 25th day of every month.

FLYING HIGH WITH BATH GIN
Bath Gin, an independent drinks brand founded by local entrepreneur Peter Meacock, is well known for getting its name out there in new and intriguing ways. Meacock opened Bath’s first distillery in over 250 years in 2016, to produce the botanical-based spirit, and last year, he collaborated with a local jeweller to put a diamond in a bottle of gin as part of a nationwide competition.
Now, Bath Gin has taken to the skies, partnering with south west hot air balloon operator Fly Away Ballooning on their very own beautiful balloon. All flights in the new balloon will include a gin and tonic courtesy of Bath Gin, ensuring a quintessentially British hot air balloon experience. flyawayballooning.com/packages

YAK YETI YAK GIVES BACK
Yak Yeti Yak has brought a taste of Nepal to Bath for 17 years, so in 2015, when Central Nepal suffered its worst series of earthquakes in 80 years, the city was keen to give back. Following a fundraising lunch, the donations kept on coming, and through the generosity of its customers, the restaurant was able to form its own charity, the YYY Foundation.
Next on the agenda for the popular restaurant is to roll out IT in more schools, as well as the introduction of a women’s health program and free sanitary-wear for girls in their schools, aimed at ending the system of girls having to drop out of school at puberty – a remarkable example of the power of Bath’s independent businesses. yakyetiyak.co.uk
So far, the YYY Foundation has rebuilt eight schools and is currently helping around 2,500 children a year. The charity has also trained 20 primary and early years teachers, built a community centre, and equipped two secondary schools with computers, allowing IT to be added to the curriculum.

WEGO Local, Bath’s new home delivery service, is coming to a street near you.
Since late 2019, WEGO Couriers have been working with delivery companies and Bath & North East Somerset Council to increase the use of zeroemission eCargo bikes in Bath, and have so far delivered around 15,000 parcels by bike.
WEGO Couriers now plans to make its existing lastmile delivery service more accessible by launching WEGO Local, a home delivery service that gives Bath residents an easy way to choose to have their online shopping delivered to their doorstep by a zero-emission eCargo bike. If every adult in Bath spent just £10 at the city’s independent businesses, over £300,000 would be contributed to Bath’s indie economy, supporting local people. While consumers spend just over a fifth of their money locally, by choosing to support local and independent businesses, online or in person, they could actually double the amount of money that stays in their local economy.

ach of Bath’s neighbourhoods has its own unique atmosphere, but all of them are filled with independent spirit.
Kingsmead Square and Saw Close With coffee shops, restaurants, street food and a world-famous cocktail bar, Kingsmead Square is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by. Just around the corner from Kingsmead Square is Saw Close, the centre of Bath’s theatre district, which is home to the Theatre Royal Bath and also boasts a plethora of eateries, from wood-fired pizza at The Oven to the Bath institution that is Schwartz Bros. Green Park Station Green Park Station is a former railway station that is now a unique shopping venue, lined with independent shops and stalls, as well as the popular Bath Pizza Co. The beautiful cast-iron roof not only provides year-round shelter, but also houses regular bustling markets. Milsom Street Quarter The stylish Milsom Street is well-known for being home to one of the world’s oldest department stores, but you will also discover some independent gems on your wanders. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Milsom Street is Milsom Place, where you will find an array of shops and restaurants, including Chanii B, the home of internationally-renowned shoe designer Chantal Pilon, and Le Vignoble, a wine lounge offering self-service beverages. Artisan Quarter The Walcot Street area of Bath has held the informal title of Bath’s Artisan Quarter since the 1960s, and brings together a vibrant collection of characterful independent shops and restaurants. Whether you are looking for quirky second-hand clothes or classic comics, Walcot Street has you covered. There are some lovely restaurants lining the street, and you will also find one of Bath’s institutions, the community-owned Bell Inn. walcotstreet.com

Abbey Quarter Abbey Green is a historic cobbled square that is home to a nineteenth-century London Plane tree. Wander around the Abbey Quarter and you will find a wonderful selection of independent shops and eateries, and on the last Sunday of every month, you can explore the vibrant Abbey Quarter Market. bathabbeyquarter.com Widcombe Head over the footbridge behind Bath Spa Station and you will find Widcombe Parade, offering everything from coffee houses to gift shops, and even a gin distillery. Just up the road, you will find Widcombe Social Club, a community-focused venue offering live music and comedy nights. Larkhall Sitting on the edge of the city, Larkhall’s village atmosphere is bolstered by independent shops including Larkhall Butchers, a farm shop, delis, florists and even a co-operative printing workshop.
Moorland Road Based in the popular Oldfield Park area, the bustling Moorland Road is home to independent retailers aplenty. Find a wide range of hardware products at Francis DIY, which first opened in 1967, stock up on essentials at Bath’s first refill store, Newleaf Healthfoods, and tuck into out-of-this-world burgers from Magu Diner, or award-winning fish and chips from The Oyster Shell. Bear Flat Named the second-best place to live in the south west by the Sunday Times last year, Bear Flat has a tight-knit community and an impressive range of independent shops and eateries, including the Good Bear Café, where 2014 Masterchef winner Ping Coombes hosts supper clubs, and Menu Gordon Jones, a stylish contemporary restaurant with a long waiting list. Weston Originally a separate village, Weston is now a suburb in north-west Bath that is home to cosy cafés, takeaways, and a friendly pub.

We speak to Jess Harvey, Founder and Director of Suave Owl in Milsom Street... Tell us a bit about Suave Owl... Suave Owl is an award-winning, family-run, independent menswear brand and retailer. We stock a wide variety of lesser-known designers across formalwear, casualwear, footwear and accessories. Sizes span from small to 6XL and 34 to 60 inches-plus chest sizes in certain brands. We have just one store, situated on Milsom Street in Bath, and we can also be found online.
Why Bath? Bath is such a beautiful city with a great atmosphere, and there is always so much going on. We love that the city has such a supportive local independent network. Bath draws a diverse range of visitors, locally and from further afield, who are proving to be very loyal customers. Bath is the perfect place to relaunch Suave Owl as we move into the new normal.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath... Since moving into our shop in Bath, we have taken part in quite a few collaborative wedding photoshoots and so have
discovered some gorgeous houses and grounds in and around the city. The Temple of Minerva in the Botanical Gardens in Royal Victoria Park is probably my favourite!
What do you do to spoil yourself? Unfortunately, I have no time to spoil myself between co-running such a young company and raising two young children. My escape therapy from both is training and playing with Bath Rugby Ladies. Your top indie recommendation in Bath? LJ Hugs has become my go-to lunch spot. They are a pop-up street food stand on Southgate Street. I found them because their food is gluten-free. They also have vegan alternatives.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months? At Suave Owl, we are really excited to be launching our own Premium and Navy Strength Gin, all locally produced. The Botanist Bath will be our first stockist, and we are also looking at other opportunities. suaveowl.co.uk

MEET BATH’S INDIE HEROES
We speak to Ellie Leiper, Owner of The Grapes Bath in Westgate Street... Tell us a bit about The Grapes... The Grapes is one of the few surviving Elizabethan buildings in the city, once a grand townhouse whose first tenant was Mayor of Bath Richard Gay. Since then, the building has been a lodgings and wine victualler. Following years of neglect, the building was empty for four years before we took it over in 2019. Now independently owned, a full restoration has been carried out across all floors, including of a rare Jacobean ornate plaster ceiling in the living room on the first floor, which is home to art classes, debating groups and a Japanese izakaya at weekends, for which we won the Bath Property Award in the Transformation category. We sell a range of premium and craft beers, local ciders, and a wide range of wines and spirits, championing local and sustainable brands, and in 2020, we won Best Bar in the Bath Life Awards. We are actively involved in the local music scene and have also set up a bed and breakfast called Pococks Lodgings, a name taken from 1694. Why Bath? No one who has ever been to Bath can deny that this is a beautiful city. The addition of a large student population and a substantial influx of overseas and national visitors provides a robust economy for hospitality businesses, and Bath Christmas Market is also a huge draw. The presence of the Bath BID was also a defining factor in our choice to start a business here, as it provides additional support, creating a safe and welcoming city.
Share something new and exciting that you have discovered in Bath... We don’t get out that much as the business is still in the very early stages, but we are planning to take the team stand-up paddleboarding soon, which we are all really looking forward to.
What do you do to spoil yourself? Discovering the many and varied restaurants in Bath is one of the ways my husband and I take time to relax together. Some firm favourites are Pintxo for their delicious tapas, and we recently took friends to Corkage for my birthday, as the menu never fails to delight. Your top indie recommendation in Bath? Wow, this is a hard one! We really are spoilt for choice in Bath, but one of my current favourite places to go with my son is the Yellow Shop on Walcot Street, as we both have a love for vintage clothes.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months? There are lots of fantastic activities happening around the city centre as part of the Bath BID’s Summer Sundays campaign, and it’s great to see the city buzzing with people. The event I’m looking forward to the most this summer is seeing some of my friends playing Robin Hood at Lady Danbury’s House, also known as The Holburne Museum, in July, as part of The Garden Theatre Fest. thegrapesbath.co.uk 27

We speak to Jonathan Willis, Co-Founder of Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein in Gay Street... Tell us a bit about Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein... Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein is a world-first visitor attraction dedicated to author Mary Shelley and her most famous creation. It’s a multi-sensory, immersive experience set over five atmospheric floors, predicted to be a major draw in Bath, the city where she wrote her novel. Bursting with unusual artefacts and vintage items, interactive multi-sensory environments and assorted body parts, Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein will deliver an unnervingly visceral, illuminating and entertaining experience. The pièce de résistance is our creature (Mary Shelley never called it a monster), which was commissioned, built, crafted and constructed by Chris Goodman of BAFTA-award-winning Millennium FX. This is a world-first representation of how Mary Shelley described Victor Frankenstein’s creation in the 1818 novel.
Why Bath? Because it’s a creative hub bursting with opportunity, and that’s exciting for an entrepreneur. When we arrived in Bath seven years ago, there was no indigenous bottled water brand, which seemed odd in an aqueous city, so, in concert with colleagues, we invented Bath Water, now served at 90 local establishments. There was no Bathbased movie production company, so now we make films here, and there was no tribute to Mary Shelley, so we are opening our new attraction to celebrate the city that helped inspire the world’s first science fiction novel.

The majority of our gifted team, who have conceived, developed and constructed House of Frankenstein and who will operate our new attraction, are Bath-based or local. With Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein, we have eight associated assets we wish to develop, for the benefit of the business and the city. For staff functions, we’ve discovered Bar Breton, on Barton Street, just down the road, offering wonderful French tapas. For Sunday lunch, it’s got to be the platters of invention at Underwood on Argyle Street.
What are you most looking forward to in the city over the next few months? Naturally, I would say the opening of our inaugural venture, that we intend to franchise globally. Counter-intuitively, I would also have to say escaping Bath, simply because everyone needs a holiday. And then returning to fine-tune the attraction and help it evolve organically.

Launched on 1st October 2020, Bath Unlimited aims to showcase some of these organisations, both to boost economic confidence locally, and to promote Bath as a location for inward investment.
Bath Unlimited is an initiative supported by the Economic Recovery and Renewal Board established by Bath & North East Somerset Council.
