Spring Home
Maintenance Tips Keeping your home in good shape is the best way to maintain your investment. by Wendy Danks
SICORA DESIGN BUILD
When the snow melt is underway, it is time to plan your spring home maintenance chores. It’s especially important in Minnesota where our dry winters bring plenty of snow, ice, and cold followed by hot and humid summers. If you took care of your home last fall, then your springtime efforts will be primarily looking for problems brought on by winter weather.

Take a good hard look at your roof, chimney, foundation, and exterior concrete for damage, cracks, and buckles. If you suspect your roof had any ice dams, you may want to hire a professional to help prevent them next year. Don’t forget to check the siding, look for peeling paint, holes in brick or stone, or any missing mortar. Check the weather stripping on all windows and doors, too. Now is the time to reseal and repair any damage to ensure you have a worry-free summer!
Another outdoor chore is to inspect your exterior faucets for leaks and damage. Repair if needed. And you might want to call for a professional inspection if you have an in-ground irrigation system.

Don’t wait until it’s 90 degrees to see if your AC is working properly. If you have central air and a service agreement, give them a call now. Otherwise, check your user guide or look online for tips on what to look for to keep your window unit or other AC in tip-top shape.
To protect your foundation, your yard should be graded to drain water outward. Now is the time to make sure this is the case, so look for settling or damage from animals. Don’t forget to check behind bushes or other vegetation near your foundation for low spots and clean out any dead wood. Make sure any pooling water drains away within 24 hours. And while you’re looking for low spots, keep an eye out for anything in your yard that could hold even a small amount of water. Whether it’s a tire swing or a lawn decoration, anything that allows water to sit for a few days can become a mosquito incubator. PA R A D E O F H O M E S T C

GREEN REMODELING
REASONS TO USE LED LIGHTING IN YOUR HOME
An alternative to incandescent lighting, LEDs offer energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, customization, and more. by Taylor Hugo
Though LEDs have been around for a while, new technology and applications have made this lighting option especially attractive for today’s homeowners. Standing for lightemitting diode, “LED has made it possible to use lighting for design in ways that you’ve never been able to do in the past,” says Steve Nielsen, co-founder and chief marketing officer of aspectLED. From energy efficiency to complete customization, here are eight reasons to consider LED lighting in your own home.
Energy efficient. Known as solid-state lighting, LEDs rely on a semiconductor to convert electricity into light, making them much more energy efficient than those that use electrical filaments, like incandescent lighting. “Many of the fixtures we can make require 80% less electrical consumption than a regular fixture,” says Nielsen. “If you think about that and you think about the number of lights in an average home, it’s pretty staggering how much electricity you can save just with that differential.”
Lifespan. Frequently changing out bulbs and light fixtures is a task of the past with LEDs. Kyndra Roth, the showroom manager for Creative Lighting, estimates LED bulbs can last seven to 15 years, compared to the yearlong life expectancy of their incandescent counterparts. As for light fixtures with LED modules built into them, the lifespan could be up to 50,000 hours. That’s decades depending on how often they’re used.
10
PA R A D E O F H O M E S R E M O D E L E R S S H O W C A S E ®
Cost effective.
LED lighting has come down in price in recent years, and while it still may be slightly more expensive than incandescents, LED’s energy efficiency and lifespan equals a boon for your wallet in the long run—and we’re not just talking about pocket change. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy, LED lighting could save homeowners $30 billion in electricity prices by 2027.
Environmentally friendly.
LED lighting is an ideal option for those who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint—not only because they significantly decrease the amount of carbon emissions for your household, but also because you don’t have to replace bulbs and light fixtures as often, translating to fewer ending up in landfills.
Heat reduction.
The lights you choose can have an impact on your home’s overall temperature. While incandescent and fluorescent bulbs respectively release 90% and 80% of their energy as heat, “LEDs produce just a fraction of that,” explains Roth. “Especially in the summer months, you’re not having to use your AC to overcome the heat created by lighting.”
Customization.
LED lights used to get a bad rap for their bright, bluish hue, but “we’ve overcome that within the last couple of years, and now LEDs can come in virtually any light color that you want,” Nielsen says. It could be “anything from a soft white all the way up to something that’s a very pure, brilliant light, like the color of sunlight, and everything in between.” Since LEDs are so small compared to traditional bulbs, they are also extremely versatile and can be utilized for just about anything, from under-cabinet and toe-kick applications to recessed and niche lighting.
Trendy yet timeless.
LED light fixtures are on top of the trends, with today’s popular installations including uplighting, backlighting, and linear lighting to highlight a home’s best architectural features—but “trendy” doesn’t mean it will go out of style. “LED fixtures are timeless,” says Kristine Baker, vice president of marketing and analytics for aspectLED. “Sometimes you can walk into a space and know what decades fixtures are from, but that’s not really the case with LED. When you install them, they’re not going to date your home.”
Smart capabilities.
It seems there’s a “smart” option for nearly everything in your home these days—and lights are no exception. Many LED fixtures now have the ability to connect to home virtual assistants like Google Home or Alexa, making it easy to control all your lighting from an app on your phone.

HOME TOUR
A Taste of Nantucket A family of four channels the coast in their five-bedroom cottage in Edina. by Taylor Hugo
Eric and Katharine Nelson have loved living in the Highlands neighborhood of Edina ever since they first moved to the area in 2015. So when they had the opportunity to sell their home, they didn’t have to go far to find the perfect location for their new build—down the block, to be exact.
“In some respects, though, it’s easier because you have all the information at your fingertips. Decisions and the vision are easier to see.”
This isn’t the first home they’ve built from the ground up. As a managing partner of custom homebuilder REFINED, LLC, Eric has had a hand in constructing more than 100 homes throughout the Twin Cities, including three for his own family.
This “last house,” as Eric calls it, differs from the old-world Tudor and modern farmhouse they’ve built in the past. With no intent to sell in the future, the homeowners took time to make sure all their musthaves were achieved, including a three-car garage, an open-concept floor plan, plenty of space to entertain, and a full three-point line sport court. Perhaps the most important requirement, however, was ensuring the house was situated to take full advantage of the views of Highlands Lake, which also influenced their decision to play up a “coastal cottage” aesthetic throughout the 7,231-squarefoot home.
“A lot of people that are in the industry would say it’s sometimes hard to select things because you know of so many options, which certainly can be the case,” he says.
“It definitely has a cleaner, coastal vibe—light and airy,” Eric says. “That was a huge design direction, and I think we kept pretty true to that as you go through the entire house.”
“When this lot came up, we said, ‘OK, let’s build our dream home on this site,'” Eric recalls. “The driving factors were staying in the neighborhood, wanting to be on the water, and this property becoming available at the time that it did.”

Outside, the classic cottage-style silhouette features an asymmetrical frame and steeply pitched rooflines, while white cedar shake and smooth Hardie board siding is accented by three-panel windows flanked by light blue shutters, stonework, and columns. But it’s the copper standing seam roof and gutters that “finished off the design perfectly for the exterior,” says Eric. Interior designer Bridget Burns of B. Burns Designs, Inc. looked to Nantucket for inspiration when choosing furniture and color palettes inside the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home. Working with a clean canvas of predominantly white walls and ceilings, and natural matte finish oak wood floors, the spaces were brought to life with pops of blue décor and natural textures—from shiplap and

wooden beams to lighting, chairs, and rugs in fabrics like jute, sisal, grasscloth, and ratan. The result is an inviting, approachable home that welcomes the outdoors inside year-round—especially in the living area that opens to the kitchen. “Given our winters, I told Eric and Katharine that they might want to make it a four-season room but pretend, in the finishing of it—the floor, the walls, the ceiling—like it’s a porch,” says Burns, highlighting traditional exterior materials like bluestone floors, whitewashed cedar shakes, and stonework that were used to achieve that goal. Burns was also instrumental in cohesively combining the homeowners’ different approaches to decorating. “They do

have slightly different design aesthetics. Katharine tends to like softer elements, where Eric leans toward more modern, clean, minimalistic lines,” she says, pointing to one floral wallpaper in particular that took some convincing. “I kept telling Eric that it was really important because it was tying the entire color scheme together.” Now, that mudroom pattern is one of Eric’s favorite finishes in the home. “The designer and my wife were more willing to take chances,” Eric adds. “It took me a little while to get on the same page as them, but I’m very happy that I did. There were times when Bridget or Katharine would push the envelope a little bit beyond where my comfort zone might be, which was great.” Since moving into the completed home in January 2019, the Nelsons have settled into their new routine, from Eric working in his home office that overlooks the lake to evening basketball games with his 8- and 13-year-old daughters in the below-ground sport court. At the end of the day, Katharine and Eric can unwind with a glass of wine on the balcony off their master bedroom, complete with a fridge. “We love the location in the neighborhood and the wildlife,” Eric says. “The house flows really well and it’s a super happy home. We’ve entertained more in the last year than we have in the last seven years. It’s just such a wonderful space and our objective is to share it with people.”
The home is situated to take full advantage of the views of Highlands Lake, including from the balcony of the master bedroom.

A much-needed refresh kept the charm of this 1980s home intact while allowing for better flow and function. By Maura Keller

Creativity is a trait that needs to be employed when cultivating truly successful remodeling projects. Just ask the experts at Crystal Kitchen Center, Inc. When remodeling this 1980s home in Plymouth, they used their knowledge and expertise to renovate the kitchen, matching its new improvements with the home’s remaining charm and redesigning the home’s back entry and laundry area.
REMODELER:
CRYSTAL KITCHEN CENTER, INC. Spacecrafting
“Our house was built in 1989 and had won an award for the layout at that time,” says homeowner, Sarah Peterson. “However, we were now looking to refresh our home and make it more up to date in terms of layout, color, flooring, appliances, utility, and lighting.” Sarah, along with her husband, Tom, decided to keep the same footprints for both areas but essentially expanded the usable space—specifically in the laundry and back entry areas. It is often said that the kitchen is the heart of the home and for the Petersons, this is indeed true. The homeowners’ vision was to renovate the kitchen to be as functional as possible, while incorporating exceptional design elements throughout. “We had a messy desk area that was never properly utilized that we turned into a dry bar and stand-up desk combo with a beverage center,” Sarah says. “We also had an electric cooktop in the middle of our island and a separate wall oven. We moved the stove and oven into one appliance off the island and added a proper ventilation hood.”
“
We have found that the changes have made it easier to host family holidays and entertain friends. The space is much more welcoming and we enjoy spending time in it." SARAH, HOMEOWNER

This change resulted in a long island free of appliances, offering the ideal spot for entertaining and general use. Crystal Kitchen Center also added a steam oven, which can function as a second heating element when the Petersons entertain. As Jolynn Johnson of Crystal Kitchen Center explains, in the kitchen the homeowners chose white cabinets in a traditional style, with a brown highlight for the perimeter, and the island was changed to a rich brown walnut. The countertop is complemented with a dry bar in walnut wood and a large subway tile backsplash. The light maple millwork was all painted white to match the cabinets. High-end appliances completed the look and functionality of the kitchen. A P R I L 3 – 5 , 2 0 2 0 | F R I D AY – S U N D AY 1 2 – 6 P M

“Our house has white-washed 1980s oak woodwork throughout, and we were looking to get rid of the ’80s look while still being able to incorporate the new look into the rest of the house,” Sarah says. “And by adding browns into the design we were able to warm up the overall look of the area.” For the laundry/back entry area, Crystal Kitchen Center installed gray wood grain laminate cabinets and marble-looking laminated countertops. The washer and dryer remained on pedestals for a good PA R A D E O F H O M E S T C
working height and the cabinets were pulled forward to make it easier to reach items. “The back entry/laundry room area was a cluster of doors, piles of shoes, and very disorganized,” Jolynn says. “By removing the wall between the rooms, taking the bi-fold closet door off, and adding a pocket door the room became much more usable.” Indeed, these small changes have made a big difference in opening up the space, creating much-needed storage area, and overall

improving the ability to do laundry in a workable space. “We now are happy with the flow and functionality of kitchen, laundry, and entry,” Sarah says. “It is easier to keep clean because we have more usable storage space and no clutter from excessive doors in the back entry. We have found that the changes have made it easier to host family holidays and entertain friends. The space is much more welcoming and we enjoy spending time in it.” PA R A D E O F H O M E S . O R G

They found Plekkenpol after a couple of false starts trying to update their master bath. As luck would have it, Justin was visiting school friends who grew up nearby and happened to ask their dad what he did. Their friends’ dad, Jim Kuzzy, explained he had been working with local remodeler Plekkenpol Builders for the past 30 years.
There are a lot of memories to preserve when you remodel the home you grew up in. In this case, the home was designed by renowned African American architect, Lorenzo Williams, making it even more important to the homeowners to keep its original aesthetic. When the team at Plekkenpol Builders got the job, they worked hard to make sure the finished product would both improve the livability for the family, but also ensure the spaces did justice to its storied past. Besides spending his childhood there, David and his wife, Heidi, raised their two kids, Justin and Lauren, in the home. Built in 1964, the contemporary beauty was just three blocks from Theodore Wirth Park with grand windows, a vaulted ceiling, and a Chicago brick fireplace wall. When David and Heidi were ready to buy their first home, their timing was exactly right. “We bought it from my parents in 1987,” explains David. “My parents were newly retired and had been thinking of downsizing.” It was a perfect match. “Both my wife and I grew up in Golden Valley and have a lot of roots here.” Over the next 30 years, the family made a great life there. The kids were involved in ski racing, and through college the entire family traveled North America and Europe for races so “the house was on the back burner.” A year or two ago, with David enjoying his second career working from home as a commercial drone pilot, Heidi doing well in her career in commercial banking, and the kids out of college, it was time for a refresh. Lauren had come home for several months so the three settled in for a remodeling experience to remember.

David and Heidi gave him a call a few months later and they hit it off. “We immediately felt comfortable working with Jim, not just because he’s a neighbor and father of excellent kids, but the fact that he had worked there for 30 years was important,” David says. Once Jim had explained that they could handle the entire project, including bringing in an interior designer, the deal was struck and the fun began. “David still had the original house plans,” Jim says. “That was really helpful. We were able to see the structure and mechanicals.” Jim also noted that the contemporary plan originally had a very open floor plan for the era, so opening it up to provide the entertainment spaces David and Heidi wanted was a natural progression.

While the brick wall was preserved during the remodel, other walls were removed to create more open sightlines through the house.
David, Heidi, and Lauren remained in their home throughout the remodel, which revamped the entire main level plus the upstairs master bath. Their golden doodle, Paisley, was also onsite during construction and made fast friends with the work crew.
Since they finished construction last May, they’ve already had at least five parties with a few to a dozen or more guests. “I would say the best part of remodeling has been that our home has become a gathering place for our family, extended family, and friends,” extolls David.
On the main level, the brick fireplace wall, steep vault, and gorgeous windows all remain, but two walls were removed to create a space perfect for entertaining. “If you’re at our front door you can look straight through the entire home,” David says. “It’s a much more inviting experience when you come in and you can walk right into the party.”
They also hosted a wrap party for the entire Plekkenpol team. “The whole family developed a real rapport with our people on the job,” says Jim. “Our crew doesn’t always get to see the finished project so it was great that David and Heidi had a really nice open house for us. It was very rewarding and fun for everyone to see the finished project.”

Fourth-generation landowners Raymond and Faye Haverstock updated their 1980s house on Lake Minnetonka while paying homage to its past. By Taylor Hugo

When Raymond and Faye Haverstock purchased their home in Deephaven, they were far from the first family members to live there: In fact, the couple are fourth-generation owners of the land tucked inside Robinsons Bay on Lake Minnetonka, a 1.5-acre piece of property that has been in the family for more than a century. Originally bought by Raymond’s great-grandparents, Francis W. and Mary Little, in the early 1900s, the first home built there was designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. When Raymond’s grandparents eventually took over, “the house became too much to maintain for them,” he explains. “It was built as a summer home and, subsequently, winterized. It required lots of upkeep and maintenance. My grandmother then decided to build another house on the same piece of property.” To preserve the history, the living room of the original Frank Lloyd Wright house was shipped to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the library to The Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania, and the hallway to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In 1986, the most current house was built on the land by Raymond’s parents, remaining untouched until Raymond and Faye took over in 2019. Like the generations that came before them, the Haverstocks were intent on honoring the property’s history while
updating it for their needs today. “We wanted to make sure [the remodel] fit the house and stayed with the Frank Lloyd Wright features that his mom built,” says Faye. “If someone drove up to it, we wanted to make sure that it didn’t look out of place.” To achieve that goal, the Haverstocks met with a couple of builders to explain their vision for the home before hiring Lee Lyn Construction, whom they chose for the project for their personality and willingness to “listen to what we wanted to have done,” says Raymond. As demolition began in January, the team worked hard to preserve what they could from the structure. Windows that once adorned a hallway of cabinets were repurposed for the garage, while the homeowners chose to keep a unique white oak ceiling in the main great room. A seamless transition between old and new was created by mixing existing trim and exterior brick with new matching materials, as was done with some of the cabinetry. “The original home had a buffet built-in cabinet, and the homeowners liked it, but it didn’t quite match what they wanted it to look like,” says Dana Dziuk, senior project manager for Lee Lyn Construction. “Our cabinetmaker used the majority of the original cabinets, and then created a new door and drawer fronts to match the new cabinets that were being put in the home.”
“
This is a house we didn’t build for resale. We built it for us, since we’re going to be the ones that will live here, and if we’re lucky enough, that our kids can some day afford.” RAYMOND, HOMEOWNER

Perhaps most sentimental is a series of oriental prints Frank Lloyd Wright gifted to Raymond’s great-grandparents after he returned from a trip to Japan, where he was working on his Imperial Hotel. “We have a number of those that are framed, and we’re trying to figure out how to put those in the house with the rest of the design we have,” says Raymond. Pulling inspiration from the home’s location on Lake Minnetonka, the new interior features blue and gray hues, and acacia hardwood floors they installed in place of off-white wool carpet. Some of the décor—all of which the Haverstocks chose themselves—centers on their passion for sailing, including sailboat hooks in the mudroom and a sailboat motif tile for the kitchen. More drastic changes came from the desire to improve the flow of the house, facilitating an efficient one-floor living plan for the couple as they age: The entire upstairs was nearly brought
26
back to the studs to make room for the addition of a study, three-car garage, mudroom, and bathroom. A brandnew kitchen was also high on the list of priorities for Faye and Raymond, who love to entertain. “We tried to create a New England, Nantucket look in a Frank Lloyd Wright-style house. I’m sure that we’ve made some architectural faux pas, if you will, but we’ve tried to blend our tastes together,” says Raymond. “This is a house we didn’t build for resale. We built it for us, since we’re going to be the ones that will live here, and if we’re lucky enough, that our kids can some day afford.” Resisting the urge to make decisions and choose finishes based on resale value is something Dana encourages all of the homeowners she works with to do, instead focusing on design that brings you joy. “You have no idea who is going to buy this home next. Don’t worry about what somebody else might like,” she says.

College City Design/Build, Inc. BATHROOM, KITCHEN, MAIN LEVEL The owner of this amazing lake house desired more of a sophisticated lake home aesthetic and less of a cabin vibe. The original kitchen and island were undersized for the open space, and the finishes were rustic and homespun. We designed a new kitchen that better fits the spacious floor plan and takes advantage of the gorgeous views. The golden, knotty wood floors and stairs were stained a deep, rich coffee color to ground the cream cabinetry. The island and adjacent serving buffet were built in stained clear alder—perfect for entertaining. Decorative light fixtures in mixed metals were introduced to add a pop to the classic palette. www.collegecitydesignbuild.com | 952-469-6900

The homeowners of this Lakeville home came to WBD in hopes of creating their dream kitchen. Their vision was to expand into the formal DR to create a larger KT for cooking, entertaining, and spending time with family. The KT now has two islands with plenty of countertop space for prepping or serving, a desk area for the homeowner and charging electronics, a built-in oven/microwave for baking and cooking for large family get-togethers, and a beautiful farmhouse sink. The cabinets are a warm gray and maple stained combo with honed granite and quartz countertops. LVT flooring and new trim on the main floor complete this elegant home for many years to come. www.whitebirchdesignllc.com | 952-686-8443

College City Design/Build, Inc. KITCHEN Talk about maximizing every inch! This kitchen has everything placed in a modest space. Removing a wall opened up sightlines, and replacing heavy wood railing parts with clean-lined iron, strategically placing a window between a base cabinet and uppers, installing a glass see-through island vent, and many other strategies were implemented to visually open the space. Running the tile continuously on the walls to the ceiling expands the space. Using one accent color in the tile and carrying onto the wall in the adjacent room also visually connects. Warm stained cabinetry is durable for entertaining and cohesive with all of the millwork. www.collegecitydesignbuild.com | 952-469-6900

Boyer Building Corp. KITCHEN, LOWER LEVEL, MAIN LEVEL, OWNER’S SUITE, WHOLE HOUSE Our ’60s vintage walkout ranch home has undergone an extensive renovation. The 8-foot ceilings were removed on the main-level living area and vaulted with beams, creating more space and drama in the living area. The entry was enlarged to be more inviting and elegant. Our new kitchen is an open design, combining Dura Supreme stained and painted cabinets with Cambria countertops. Our open stairway visually marries the upper area to the walkout space. The 5-inch plank flooring and painted trim and doors are designed to be sympathetic to the minimalist, midcentury motif. We integrated colors and textures that are contemporary for today. www.boyerbuilding.com | 952-475-2097

We also redesigned the office area so that we could make way for a wet bar with custom cabinetry with glass accents and arabesque splash. Ispiri, LLC BATHROOM, GREAT ROOM/FAMILY ROOM, KITCHEN, MAIN LEVEL, OWNER’S SUITE The perfect example of tying in the new and the old for a complete kitchen, main-level, and master suite transformation! For the homeowners of this late 1990s home, it was time to refresh while keeping their original millwork and making impactful tweaks to the layout. To unify the original maple millwork with the new design, warm finishes were selected: all-new hardwood flooring and carpet, brand-new stair parts, and new light fixtures. A large 9’ island replaces the kitchen’s awkward triangular island. The fireplace was refaced with a herringbone tile. The master BA now features a freestanding tub, a large shower, and an updated see-through fireplace to the BR. www.ispiri.com | 651-578-0122
