WHERE DREAM HOMES COME TRUE®

Rooted in

COMMUNITY LIKE SO MANY OF YOU, LAYING DOWN ROOTS ISN’T SOMETHING I EVER THOUGH MUCH ABOUT. Moving from out-state Minnesota in my 20s was easy. My husband and I wanted the opportunities that the big city offered, yet “home” was a short two-hour drive away. But as time went by, I began to realize that when I thought about home, it wasn’t the town I grew up in anymore. Now, some 40-plus years later, as I look to retire in a few years, I’ve been reflecting a lot about the pros and cons of making a move away from the community I now consider home. And while warm winters and bug-free summers have their allure, I recognize I’ve put down some pretty deep roots, which will be hard and painful to dig up. Wendy Danks // Parade of Homes sm Editor

Happy Touring!

THANK YOU

to Marvin Windows and Doors for sponsoring the Fall Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

All of that just means that I know a lot of you have also dug roots deep into your community. So when life changes and your home doesn’t fit your needs any longer (or maybe it never really did), you really don’t have to pick up and move. Remodeling might just be the right answer for you — and you’ve come to the right place to find out.

Inside you can read about the remodeling adventures of four Twin Cities’ families and learn how remodeling has made their life better. We’ve also shared the basics on how to get started on page 12. You’ll want to check out what’s trending in colors, finishes and accessories starting on page 38. Our style editor, Katy Baar, brings you the most interesting features from the remodeled homes on our June Artisan Home Tour. And speaking of Artisan, don't miss our two Artisan Dream Remodeled Homes on the tour. You’ll be asked for a $5.00 donation when you visit to support our BATC Foundation. Read more about their work helping local veterans on page 31. I think you’ll find something (or a lot of somethings) to fall in love with when you visit the remodeled homes on this Fall’s tour. And the best part is that, with the help of one of these professional remodelers, you could fall in love with your old home again without giving up all you love about your community.

do remodeling business

with a PRO

Thank you for picking up our 2016 Fall Remodelers Showcase Guidebook! Since you have, I’m sure you’re either thinking about remodeling your home, or dreaming about doing so sometime in the future. In either case, you’ve come to the right place. The Remodelers Showcase is your very best opportunity to meet the region’s best professional remodelers, and be inspired by their work. EDUCATED

Why should that matter to you? Remodelers are invited guests into your home. They’ll be spending a lot of time with you and your family whether it’s a small bathroom redo or a full makeover. Making sure the remodeler you select has the best track record is essential. All the remodelers you’ll meet on the tour are members of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC). That means they’re ethical, educated and committed to the industry.

ethical BATC Remodeler members are required to sign and agree to

COMMITTED TO THE INDUSTRY

abide by a strict code of business ethics and agree to mediation, which BATC will provide should a dispute arise. BATC members are required to show proof that their Minnesota Contractors License is current, and that they have completed a minimum of three major, successful remodeling projects before being allowed to participate in any Remodelers Showcase tour.

educated

BATC provides important educational opportunities, both to maintain their state licensing and to help improve their day-to-day business. BATC makes sure remodelers are current on regulations, building codes, new technologies and the latest products.

committed to the industry

Remodelers who make the effort to join and participate in an organization like BATC show they are committed to the remodeling industry and remaining an active part of it. That’s not something you should take lightly. All too often we hear about families who hired a fly-by-night contractor but were left with an unfinished project while the money and the remodeler are long gone.

Is this you? Your family situation has changed so you need more rooms or fewer rooms, different amenities and features to suit the way you live today.

Your income has changed, now you can afford to have some of the more expensive features you really want but gave up due to budget when you bought.

Your heating, cooling and maintenance costs are killing you.

BUT, you really want to stay in the neighborhood—close to friends, family, place of worship, job, school.

Then there’s often only one best solution—remodel. And, even though you might not see the potential for renovating in place, a good remodeler can show you solutions that will transform your old house into your dream home. 10

how to get STARTED Picking up this Remodelers Showcase Guidebook is a great start. Our tour lets you see the possibilities other families have found through remodeling. It’s also the best place to meet and vet a variety of the region’s best professional remodelers, without any obligation. Next, stop and analyze what works and what doesn’t in your current home. Make a list and write down all the things you love about your home,

and then write down all the things that you wish were different. You should also figure out how much you can or want to spend. Meet with

your financial planner to see how a remodeling project fits within your long-term goals. Then visit with a lender to explore options in financing.

find the right remodeler Choosing the remodeler that’s right for you is the key to a positive experience and achieving the result you want. For most families, working with a design/build remodeler (a company that handles everything from design to final construction) or a remodeler that has a good working relationship with an independent architect or designer will serve their needs best. Unless you have construction experience, letting your remodeler coordinate the entire job leaves less chance for problems and errors. Hopefully, you’ll find a few remodeling firms during the Remodelers Showcase that seem to be right up your alley. But you don’t have to stop there. Ask your friends, neighbors and family for referrals. Go to ParadeofHomes.org and use the Remodeler Search to check out even more exceptional remodelers that are members of our

12

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

association. And, look through Houzz and other online resources where remodelers tend to show their work. Once you’ve identified a handful of great candidates, do a search for them online, and take a few minutes to review their websites. If you still like what you see, your next step is to make contact. When you meet with a remodeler, make sure to learn as much as you can about their philosophy and work ethic. Find out if they’ve done work similar to what you’re envisioning. Ask them to explain all aspects of a project, from payment and budget requirements to design, and finally what to expect during construction. They should explain how they schedule work, how you make selections, and what happens when an unexpected challenge arises. During your meeting, pay attention to their

personalities and communication style, too. If you don’t feel comfortable with them in an interview, you won’t feel comfortable with them during your remodeling job. You’ll want to make sure they have a current Minnesota Contractor license, and find out what kind of insurance they carry. Ask them about any subcontractors that they will be using, and to meet the person who will be managing your job on a day-to-day basis. Most importantly of all, make sure to contact their references. Talking to families that have worked with the remodelers you’re considering will give you the best feel for what you’ll be getting into. Now that you’ve checked out their credentials, asked about their experience, talked with past customers, and discussed your budget and your remodeling dreams, you’re ready to confidently choose the right remodeler for you.

When

Lake Life comes calling

From downtown Minneapolis to the relaxing shoreline of Big Carnelian in Stillwater, Steve and Brenda are enjoying the best of both worlds: city living and lake life.

Steve and Brenda were excited to settle into a gorgeous lake home where they could reside full time as empty nesters. Even better, they now have a "family cabin" where they can host their grown kids, relatives and friends in lake-side style. Having previously owned a home in Edina, then moving to a downtown apartment (which they are keeping), this transition to lake living was a big one and in stark contrast to their former lifestyles. Steve and Brenda purchased a 1956 home on an incredible lot just ten minutes from Stillwater.

We wanted to select a contractor who was immersed in the community [and] picked Dan Jozefow of Sunrise Design and Construction as his honesty and knowledge won us over right away.

The home offered incredible views of Big Carnelian Lake that made the transition a whole lot easier! "The whole house needed renovation," Brenda explained. "but we loved the lake and the lot." The property was bursting with potential but they needed a professional and trustworthy contractor to help them create their dream. "We particularly wanted to select a contractor who was immersed in the community–had been around a long time, and lived nearby," Steve explained, "so we

interviewed two contractors and we picked Dan Jozefow of Sunrise Design and Construction as his honesty and knowledge won us over right away." Like many who choose to remodel an old home, Steve and Brenda encountered a lot of bumps in the pathway that they didn't count on. "With every fork in the road, our remodeler, with the help of our designer Suzanne Van Horne from Smart Interiors, was able to take each left turn and offer exciting options and variations," explained Brenda.

Some doors are just an opening,

ours define the home. A door is so much more than an entrance into a home. It’s an entrance into the lives that reside within that home. It’s a bridge that connects open, spacious interior living with open, spacious exterior living. With cool weather soon approaching, you will be spending more time inside your warm home. To allow for great views of the fall colors and the beauty of fresh snow, many homeowners are pushing the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living with more glass and open views, while maximizing their energy efficiency during the long, Minnesota winters with Marvin’s Patio Door, Scenic Door and new standard size 9-foot door lines. Marvin’s swinging and sliding Patio and French Doors make your door unique to your home with customizable sizes, styles, configurations, glass, exterior clad colors and divided lites. Warm wood interiors invitingly frame the view and exceptionally tough aluminum clad exteriors create an energyefficient weather barrier. The Ultimate Multi-Slide Door is more than just a panoramic door. It’s an entirely new lifestyle. Smoothly slide it open and invite expansive views, fresh air and natural light into your home. The Ultimate Multi-Slide Door is available in six panel uni-directional and ten panel bi-directional configurations, with standard openings up to 56feet wide and 12-feet high and an unmatched 0.28 U-factor for energy efficiency. Choose either pocket or stacked operation, both available with a Scenic Door Ultimate Sliding Screen.

For times that you don’t want anything to stand between you and your view, Marvin designed the Ultimate Lift and Slide Door. With openings up to 50feet wide and 12-feet high, and a corner (90-degree) option, it allows for a seamless transition between the exterior and interior of your home. Marvin’s industry-exclusive hardware that virtually disappears, and pocket or stacked configurations, assure you an incredibly clean and unobstructed view with effortless operation.

John Kraemer & Sons, Inc. Landmark Photography

Looking for something a little different? The Bi-Fold Door is a simple, elegant solution for indoor/outdoor living. Opening like an accordion, the Bi-Fold Door has two-panel to eight-panel configurations that fold neatly to the outside of the door opening, so they won’t interfere with interior furniture. The Bi-Fold Door’s openings are up to 21-feet high and eightfeet wide. Not only can Marvin’s Scenic Doors’ large sizes bring the outdoors in, now patio and French doors can too. Originally developed as a custom solution, nine-foot doors are now a standard product as of August 2016. This larger size is available to the Inswing, Outswing, Sliding and Arch Top French Door, Sliding Patio Door and Ultimate Multi-Slide panel configurations and operations.

Welcome (Back) Home These families chose to renovate or fully remodel their exisiting homes to transform them into the house of their dreams.

Inspiration Design Center Story By Katy Baar

I Need Inspiration When the Tapper family heard about a Facebook contest by Inspiration Design Center, located in Burnsville, they figured they had nothing to lose. Melissa penned a letter outlining their kitchen’s many woes and posted a photo of the family to Inspiration Design Center’s Facebook page with a sign that said it all: “I Need Inspiration!”

20

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

The young family bought their home in foreclosure after the loss of their daughter Valerie at 24 weeks gestation. The home was a welcome distraction and they purchased it knowing “there were many projects we wanted to do,” explained Russell. Replacing the blue linoleum flooring, painting the kitchen cabinets white and adding fresh color to the walls made the space more livable. But despite these minor updates, the kitchen still lacked functionality for the growing family. Melissa, now expecting a third son, detailed the kitchen’s limitations in the letter she submitted for the $25,000 kitchen makeover contest. “We need inspiration in remodeling the cabinets to make them more efficient and usable for everyone,” she writes. “Please help us remodel our kitchen to be something we are proud to call our own.”

Visit this home on your tour!

After interviewing three finalists, Inspiration Design Center, who specializes in kitchen and bathroom remodels, selected this deserving family as their winner. Melissa and Russell were stunned and excited! The team at Inspiration Design Center welcomed Russell’s help as he undertook the demolition process. “The process was really incredible. The team at Inspiration took the time to come up with a thoughtful and effective design with a lot of fresh ideas,” he shared.

It’s inspiring to make meals now.” The finished result was a dream kitchen that perfectly combined function and style. Melissa enjoys the ample storage and efficient layout, while Russell has a newfound appreciation for the art of cooking. “It’s inspiring to make meals now,” he laughed. “We have a huge island where we cook everyday and there’s room for the whole family.” This island would come in handy when the Tapper family kitchen made its TV debut on KTSP's Twin Cities Live for a special cooking segment hosted in their newly finished space. Talk about an incredible story with a made-for-TV happy ending!

James Barton Desgn-Build Story By Katy Baar

Remodeling Snowball When homeowners Tony and Michelle purchased an older home for their family in Edina’s Country Club neighborhood, they knew a renovation was in order, and they were prepared to dip their toes into the process. “We initially had the idea that we could make the kitchen bigger by moving one wall,” explained Michelle. With the innovative ideas from the team at James Barton Design-Build, however, the family quickly decided to dive all in. “Our initial plans snowballed into one thing after another until we were redoing the entire house!” But don’t get the wrong idea. This story isn’t a cautionary tale of a remodel gone wrong (one thing snowballing into another). Rather, this

story boasts amazing craftsmanship, thoughtful planning, attention to detail and—most importantly—a dream home (literally, see page 30) and a happily-ever-after family of four. From the beginning, James Barton DesignBuild shared the family’s desire to maintain the character and charm of their older home, while customizing each space to fit their specific needs and style. To achieve a more thoughtful and updated layout they reconfigured the flow of the home by moving the main staircase. The result was dramatic. The newly reconfigured

space opened up the main floor and allowed the homeowners to add a mudroom off of the kitchen and rear entry. Traffic flow was improved on the main level and the upstairs was altered for the better as well. A gorgeous library nook and desk now greets you at the top of the staircase, which, by the way, is a stunning focal point of the home in and of itself. To the left of the library nook you’ll find a large bonus family room with walnut paneling and floors, while bedrooms and breathtaking master suite await to the right.

That’s because our charitable arm, the BATC Foundation, has chosen this gorgeous remodel as one of this year’s Artisan Dream Remodeled Homes. We hope it inspires your dreams too when you tour during the Remodelers Showcase: September 30-October 2.

Puustelli is a leading Scandinavian kitchen brand and has been a market leader in Finland for over 30 years. Their Puustelli MIINUS Cabinetry, shown above, is exclusively offered by Puustelli USA in the U.S. market.

Melissa and Adam Puustelli USA Story By Katy Baar

“There’s No Place Like Minnesota.” Coming from a woman who lived in paradise for six years, helping to run the family’s enterprising chocolate company in all but two islands of Hawaii, this statement is a true testament to Minnesota’s vibrant communities.

community was a welcomed treasure as Melissa and Adam looked after their mother until she passed away from ovarian cancer in 2011. After this loss, the siblings realized that their father would be better cared for and comfortable if he moved in with them as well. A structure that originally housed just Melissa and her dogs had more than doubled its occupancy.

When Melissa moved back to Minnesota, she purchased a home in Edina to be closer to her parents and for better healthcare options in the state. Built in 1969, the house was a classic to that time period and featured lots of small rooms and compartmentalized spaces. Not long after moving in, Melissa’s brother Adam came to stay with her to share in the care of their ailing parents.

While the neighborhood suited the family well, the home simply could not adequately accommodate their new living situation. The windows along the backside of the home allowed light to shine brightly on one side of the home, while the segmented rooms in front created an imbalance of light within the choppy floor plan. The siblings wanted to modernize the home’s kitchen and reconfigure the flow and function of the home to create bright spaces throughout.

The quaint home the siblings shared was located in a charming neighborhood and, according to Melissa, boasts “the best neighbors in the world.” This caring

The “genuine and heartfelt” approach from the team at Puustelli USA was what convinced Melissa and Adam that this was the company they wanted to work with. The

Puustelli team created open, yet distinct spaces and reconfigured the home to add a bathroom, mudroom and new kitchen.

BEFORE

“Bjorn Freudenthal (VP of Sales with Puustelli USA) listened to us and created great solutions so that we could achieve an open space without adding significant square footage to the home,” an important consideration for Melissa. For Adam, Puustelli was professional and exceptionally talented. “We never felt pushed in the process, and we love the Scandinavian style and quality of product.” Puustelli USA specializes in Scandinavian design that features clean lines and the mantra “less is more.” The company is known for its smart organization and clean manufacturing, not to mention signature Scandinavian beauty. Lead Designer Lisa Kroskin channeled this style and transformed the kitchen into a work of art that’s sleek, beautiful and utilitarian, which was “exactly what we wanted,” explained Melissa.

DURING

The siblings, who have chosen to stay close together, along with their dad, can now enjoy a spacious, modern kitchen and a home that boasts an improved layout with an abundance of natural light. They are able to enjoy time together for a long time to come in a beautiful house that proves there’s no place like home. 28

BATC Foundation:

SERVING TWIN CITIES COMMUNITIES On any given night in Minnesota, there are hundreds of military veterans who have no place to call home. The BATC Foundation has taken steps to address this need and the needs of other homeless populations by affiliating with HomeAid America, a national organization which focuses on providing services such as remodeling and construction to local service providers. Partnering with the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV), our first HomeAid Twin Cities project will provide the first family-friendly housing for MACV’s “Supportive Independent Living (SIL)” program. This program provides housing for at-risk, veteran-headed households for 18 months to two years. During that time, families receive financial counseling, family support, job training and health care, all designed to help the family get back on their feet.

Jason and Genella are a blended military family who have experienced more than their share of misfortunes. Jason served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps with three tours in Iraq. He currently serves in the Minnesota National Guard. Jason had difficulty finding work after his return from Iraq and was unemployed for several months. Genella was a college professor until she experienced numerous complications related to the birth of their son. Due to several surgeries, she now suffers from chronic pain and difficulties with lifting, movement and eating. The family has three children, ages 6, 6½ and 8. Because of Jason’s unemployment and Genella’s health issues, the family does not have the funds for upkeep on their home. The BATC Foundation is helping Jason and Genella with window and door replacements, new kitchen and bathroom flooring and other maintenance.

Jonathan Bernal was a member of the Army Reserves when his unit was deployed to Iraq in July 2008. In December of that year, his left ankle suffered an avulsion fracture when he hopped off the back of a semi-truck’s flatbed. The pain from the injury did not go away and worsened after deployment. Jonathan was eventually diagnosed with regional pain syndrome and is now unable to work. The family has exhausted their savings. Partnering with American Building Contractors, Inc., the BATC Foundation was able to replace the siding on Jonathan’s home, which had deteriorated to the point where birds were living in the walls. Bernal said it will be a relief to have the house repaired because so many things could have gone wrong as a result of the deteriorating siding, including an electrical fire or mold damage. “I couldn’t afford any of this... I wouldn’t be able to get approved for a loan or anything,” he added.

LED Lighting for your Home They’re the most energy efficient bulb on the market—and they last longer than any other. Yes, they’re more expensive, but you recover the cost in energy savings over time. The reason to invest a little more for your bulbs is energy savings: LEDs can save you up to 85% compared to old, incandescent light bulbs. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label and buy your bulbs from a reputable company.

1

LEDs can save you up to 85% compared to old, incandescent light bulbs.

Where to start

First—Determine the high use areas of your home— like the kitchen or hallways. Since these bulbs are on more, you’ll save more by replacing them

2

Next—take note of the wattage of these bulbs you want to replace

3

Three—Do the math. LEDs produce more light for the energy they use; the wattage of an LED is roughly 15% that of an incandescent. (15% of a 60-watt bulb equals a 9-watt LED. In this case you can round up to 10 or 12 watts)

4

Finally—Save your receipt. LED bulbs should last 10-20 years, depending on the manufacturer. If one burns out too soon, take it back

What color light do you want? Light temperature is based on the Kelvin scale which determines the type of color of the light. Keep in mind, the higher the Kelvin temperature, the higher the price.

WARM

WHITE

NEUTRAL

If you want a standard type of light, look for 2,700-3,000 K.

COOL

DAYLIGHT

If you want a white daylight, look for 5,000-7,000 K.

Green Proof! Green build programs have been around for a decade or two. Going green when you build from scratch is a fairly straight-forward equation. But creating a green build program for remodeling is a whole other animal. But that’s where Minnesota’s Green Path comes in. We’ve built a common sense, affordable green certification program designed to verify and document green features within a wide variety of remodeling options. In the end, you get an improved level of energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, plus water and resource management, all certified and documented with your own Green Path Home Performance Report (HPR).

The HPR will show you and any future homeowners the energy and green features that were built into your home during the remodeling process. If a blower door test was performed, the HPR will also include its Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rating. Research shows that homes with certified energy features sell more quickly and at a premium (the Twin Cities MLS agrees,

including green certification in their listings). While you’re probably not thinking about resale yet, it’s just one more reason to consider MN Green Path Certification. For more information about MN Green Path for Remodeling, visit ParadeofHomes.org and click on the Go Green resource page.

The owners of this large 1985-built two-story home had had it with their small and outdated oak KT, and were ready for a major transformation! The clever design team at New Spaces was up for the challenge! By thinking outside the box and repurposing the underutilized formal dining space, they were able to transform the kitchen of this home into a dream come true! The new, spacious design has many features including a combination of stained maple and enamel semi-custom cabinets, an apron front sink, a beautiful pantry wall with a barn door, and gourmet appliances! Visit us Sat. or Sun. at 3pm for our design and budget seminar!

After living in their home for over 10 years, the homeowners felt like it was time to give their 1990s home a refresh! By expanding the walkway into the dining room and through to the kitchen, the visibility and feel of an open-concept was created from the front entry. The kitchen was reconfigured to improve ease and use space better, as well as give a fresh look. The step-down areas were raised to remove the dangerous trip-factor and give the appearance of a larger, more open space at the same time. The laundry wall and doorway to the kitchen were shifted to improve the functionality of the mudroom.

Dishwasher disaster leads to main floor renovation. A dishwasher leak gave this homeowner that long-dreamed of chance to redesign her main floor, returning functionality and beauty to her KT, DR, LR and entryway. We expanded the KT, brought in and relocated all new appliances, new cabinets, glass tile backsplash and deep roll-out pantry. Matched 3-piece Craftsman trim work client loved, combined 2 closets into 1, hand-toothed new hardwood flooring seamlessly into existing oak, added new raised privacy transom window, to bring in more natural light and added a 2nd patio door providing quicker access and better view of the deck. This 1950s rambler was built with a detached garage, and our clients' goal was to combine the home and the garage for easier access and an updated look. In addition to the exterior project, our clients also wanted to open up the main level of their home on the interior. Stonehearth removed walls which separated the kitchen and the living room, giving the space a warm, welcoming new look. Fieldstone custom cabinets, granite countertops and wood flooring illuminate this kitchen and the open dining room makes it great for entertaining. In addition, Stonehearth created a more functional entryway complete with custom storage units. This project in Bloomington was an economical approach to good, clean space. Here we focused more on the amount of square footage over high-end finishes. However, the cabinetry is still custom-built in our facility. All of the other finish selections were humble in less populated areas. We added on 430 square feet of new living space and updated 400 square feet of existing space. We created a larger kitchen with all the amenities, along with a simple master suite. This is a very common floor plan. Everyone in Bloomington needs this type of remodeling project.

Main level of this EP home needed some reallocating and opening up the spaces to each other. KT was confining and divided in its central location so DR/KT spaces were flipped and opened up to rest of main level. KT has cosmic blue granite, rustic hickory stained cabinets, floors and beams, steel accents, Thermador Pro grand SS range, walk-in pantry, micro pebbles and contemporary subway tiles. DR has blue pearl granite, walnut cabinetry and stone splash. Mud room/locker area has sliced log bench seat with steel dividers and cabinetry for storage. Perfect blend of contemporary and rustic! "Poor traffic pattern. Inefficient work triangle. Outdated appearance. Poor lighting. Need better use of a large space." These were just some of the items on the kitchen remodeling "to-do" list presented to Plekkenpol Builders by the homeowners. The first step was to open up the space and create an open, inviting floor plan. A large granite island with seating was added. Customized storage was included to maximize space. The result is a modern and efficient kitchen that capitalizes on a one-of-akind lake view. Come see for yourself; when Plekkenpol Builders remodels your home, "The Difference is in the Details."

This lower level remodel is filled with sophisticated details and an eclectic-contemporary design flair. The two-sided corner fireplace is the focus of the rec room – with full stone surround, stunning granite mantle and room-length ceramic hearth. The "secret" poker room is tucked behind a custom-made door that is hidden behind oversized artwork. This room also houses metal rack wine storage which can be viewed through double glass doors. A full bath features the perfect blend of ceramic patterns. The knotty alder bar overlooks a pub table room and the contemporary lighting is a highlight of the project. A baker's dream kitchen – the former space was not conducive to a production bakery kitchen that would allow for a more process-orientated approach to cooking. Dual dishwashers, touch-activated faucets and soap dispensers, drawer organization, in-wall appliance storage, a custom baker's station and large lazy Susan adorn the space. A corner booth and window seat create a unique venue in order to allow others to engage in conversation while not taking up valuable baking real estate around the marble island. The lower level was enhanced for movies, gaming and crafts with a new wet bar, FPL, home theater and craft armoire.

Who is thinking about remodeling their 70's built home? This two-story traditional home has a common U-shaped kitchen layout with no room to expand. Challenges included plumbing and vent pipes galore hidden in soffits and in existing cabinets. Upper cabinets hung down over the peninsula which inhibited conversations and an open feel. From the entrance to the kitchen...come and see our beautiful, refreshed and cleverly designed space!

Downsizing to a townhome requires more than getting rid of extra furniture. This one needed to be fully remodeled: a new kitchen with Crystal cabinets and Cambria countertops, laundry was reconfigured to add storage, the fireplace received a new granite surround and entertainment center was refreshed with cabinet doors. Hardwood floors now extend throughout the whole main level. The master bath was gutted and reconfigured to create a space fitting their new lifestyle. We find people who downsize will give up space but are not willing to compromise on quality.

Our clients recently built this beautiful home in Brooklyn Park, however, they wanted a more custom design for their basement than what their home builder provided. They hired Stonehearth Remodeling to finish their basement into an owners' suite where they could have a separate living area from their children and grandchildren on the first two levels of the home. Stonehearth designed and built a spacious living area, library, bedroom, walk-in closet and bathroom. Our clients' goal was to be able to "age in place" so we designed the area to be wheelchair accessible if needed.

HBRE has conducted a full renovation (interior and exterior) of the house at 3325 Flag Avenue which was originally built in 1965. The improvements on this home included lowering the basement floor one foot, opening up the main-level kitchen, dining, and entertaining areas. All new cabinets, bathrooms, flooring, windows, trim, and doors. Another great design feature that was created on this renovation was the vaulting of the master bedroom. This truly was a full renovation bringing a home with the original 1965 decor into 2016.

Get inspired by this tear-down. The home was rebuilt with a six-foot addition to the foundation. The homeowner, an interior designer, dreamed of the details for years. Step into the basement, main floor and second story to see her dreams come to life. It is a mix of old and new, taking inspiration from a 150-year-old farmhouse. Explore the open design on the main floor, five bedrooms, master suite with double closets, two-and-a-half bathrooms, stone fireplace with built-ins and more. The home's exterior received special attention with cedar brackets and window detail. Don't miss this complete renovation.

This dark and dated home had an awkward floor plan due to the fact that the massive staircase was centered in the middle of the home. The entire main floor was opened up by removing the old staircase and relocating it to an outside wall, creating an improved traffic flow, a larger and completely renovated kitchen and a back entry mud room area. A bright new living room with finished hardwood floors, modern fireplace, custom window seats and renovated bathrooms were just some of the updates completed to bring this 1926 home into the 21st century.

This 1940s two-story Edina Country Club Home was renovated a number of times over the years and lost its architectural style which was more of a Cape Cod. It was important to bring back as much of the formal interior layout and create a floor plan that is more spacial without adding any addition square footage. With the exterior we needed to create a more architecturally sound design while working with some previous renovations. Being within the country club neighborhood also required the home to feel as if it were built in the era of the surrounding neighbors.

Their new suite includes a large walk-in closet and master bathroom. Come see how Ispiri turned shag to a modern day shiner! The homeowner wanted to incorporate their modern style without compromising the character of this 1950's rambler. Working closely with our clients and their designer Ann Klemm, we turned their ideas into reality. The entire main floor received all new oak hardwood flooring with Rubio Monocoat hard wax oil which is linseed oil based and has zero VOC's. The newly remodeled mainfloor BA has a shower to be seen. The new kitchen features mahogany vertical grain match cabinetry accented by beautiful Caesarstone countertops and a white tile cooktop backsplash. Finally we updated the family room with renewed paneling and a gas FPL.

The home was redesigned to eliminate existing low ceilings, out-of-date kitchen and bathroom areas, open up the views to the lake, and improve the home layout. We moved the front door (opened up to a bath/laundry area) to the center of the home to present a full view to the lake. We added a "bridge" to the garage for an entry/mud room, new kitchen cabinets, countertops, master bedroom suite with walk-in shower, elevated interior ceilings, wood beams, dark millwork, Marvin windows, new fireplace, wood floors, open staircase, lower-level finish with wet bar, bath, and bedroom. New siding, deck and railing completed the remodel.

Come see another kitchen/addition from J & J Remodelers. The homeowners were looking for a more usable kitchen/ mud room. This early 1900s kitchen has now transformed into a wonderful gourmet kitchen. We closed up the back stairway, took down a wall and added an eight-foot addition to the side of the home. Moving the sink to the front of the home allowed us to take advantage of the view out of the new Andersen windows. Custom cabinets, commercial appliances, and soap stone countertops finish off the kitchen. Please stop and see this stunning remodel. See two great transformations in one home; first, a new screen porch with a fireplace changed an average deck into an amazing new living space that includes a Marvin bi-fold patio door that brings the outside in and the inside out. Second, adding an additional bathroom seemed impossible, but through creative design a three-quarter bathroom was added that enhances the function without cramping the space.

This beautiful corner-lot home started by upgrading the golden oak with new painted white kitchen cabinetry. We were able to incorporate a beverage center area by removing the 90s kitchen-desk trend between the KT and dining room. Fireplace updates, wainscot panels and new wall sconces in the family room complete the main level's new look. The second phase was a full exterior/landscape renovation. With fresh paint in a new color scheme, the exterior now has a contemporary appearance! By replacing the overgrown evergreens with fully mature spruce, firs, pines, the family now has the perfect yard to enjoy their new sport court! A young, fun, growing family called on James Barton Design Build to update their dark, cramped kitchen and main level of their traditional 1990s home to fit their busy lifestyle. All new custom enameled KT cabinetry, a large stained island and quartz countertops brought in a modern touch while keeping the home's traditional style. Though opening the floorplan was desired, they also wanted to create a closed-off play area for the kids and plan for a future office space. A once unused formal front room was the perfect spot to accomplish this. A mix of existing elements with new modern touches make this house a timeless beauty. This growing family of five had outgrown their 1960s kitchen and was ready to leave behind the poor work flow and unusable cabinet spaces. The goal was to create an open space with lots of natural light, a gathering space for family and friends, easy access for the little ones and more functional storage. IDC removed a wall, turned their formal LR into the DR and extended their kitchen into the old dining space. The result was a light, airy space with specialty storage, recessed and under-cabinet lights, a buffet area that allows for party spreads or a beverage bar. You don't want to miss this realistic solution for a real KT!
