FROM THE EDITOR

Making Life Better Wendy Danks Parade of Homes sm Editor

In a bit of serendipity, just yesterday I discovered that the little Cape Cod house I grew up in is for sale. After looking through the sales photos, I was truly surprised to see that it looked pretty much the same after 40 odd years. Of course, there were a few updates (new paint and floor coverings) but everything else was pretty much the same — albeit looking a lot smaller than I remember. But that got me thinking about how my mom, who rearranged the furniture every six months, would have loved to be set loose with a remodeler. Money was tight, so my very handy dad did what he could — opening up a wall to transform a bedroom into a dining room, finishing off the basement, and adding a showerhead in the basement laundry room.

Editor Wendy Danks and her sister circa 19xx (we’ll never tell).

THANK YOU

to Marvin Windows and Doors for sponsoring the Fall Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

Looking back, it was clear that the renovations my parents were able to complete were all about making our lives just a little bit better. We were able to spread out and enjoy dinner in the new dining room without knocking elbows. The new basement rec room meant my sisters and I could rock and roll to our hearts content while my parents were catching an episode of Gunsmoke upstairs. And with one bathroom for a family with three teenage daughters and a baby, that basement shower got a lot of use. Making life more comfortable, more convenient, and more your

style is exactly what remodeling is all about, and why so many of us love the Remodelers Showcase. Join us this Fall to tour some amazing projects. And, please take a minute to check out the interesting and informative articles inside this Guidebook. We’re once again bringing you the remodeling adventures from four local families — they explain why they wanted to remodel and how the process went. We’ve got some great tips on enjoying your outdoor living spaces, and tips on how to save energy from our friends at Xcel Energy. We’re sharing some beautiful new style trends from our June Artisan Home Tour remodeling projects. And of course, don’t miss the calendar of events so you can plan your Remodelers Showcase tour around them. I want to thank the homeowners who are so graciously opening their homes for you to tour. And, thank you for joining us on the 28th Fall Remodelers Showcase.

Happy Touring,

That’s not something you should take lightly. All too often, I hear of clients left with an unfinished project while the money and the remodeler are long gone.

I want to give a special thank you to all of the homeowners who are so proud of the work their remodelers have done that they are happily opening their homes to you. As a remodeler, the greatest compliment I receive in my business is being granted permission by my clients to show off their home and our work… we couldn’t put the Showcase on without you. Also, I would like to thank those of you making the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase part of your want-to-do list this fall. We know you’ll find inspiration and fun on the Remodelers Showcase, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll meet the remodeler who you’ll want to take your home and make it better.

A History OF THE HOUSE ON THE HILL story by KATY BAAR photography by Jon Huelskamp, Landmark Photography

At the top of Broadway Street in historic Stillwater, sits a beautiful home overlooking the majestic St. Croix River. Built in 1875, its history is robust and flooded with memories that have been preserved throughout the years by the home’s various owners. As the property changed hands through the years, so did the home’s blueprints. Before Trevor and Julie Cronk purchased the home in 2012 a series of odd expansions and additions had already been completed. Despite this, the property’s unique architecture remained intact. Trevor and Julie were drawn to the character of the home, especially the property’s most distinct features found on the upper floors. Today, the home’s signature fourth-floor belfry tower provides ample views of the river, including the Stillwater Lift Bridge to the left and the

new St. Croix Crossing bridge to the right. While the belfry provides just enough room to walk along its perimeter edges similar to a lighthouse, the third floor’s walkout rooftop patio offers even more relaxed views of the home’s stunning surroundings, not to mention endless space for entertaining. On a summer day you’ll find the family lounging around both of the roof deck fire pits watching paddleboats like the Andiamo pass by. You’re also likely to find Trevor wearing his Lift Bridge Brewing Co. baseball cap as he enjoys a cold beer from the Stillwater brewery he

co-owns with four other neighbors. This peaceful scene is possible through the renovations done by Wooden Dreams, Inc. that preserved the home and updated the space. The family of five “wanted to make the home ours, while keeping the integrity of the old home, and capitalizing on the unique river views,” Trevor explained. The outcome is simply magnificent. Their remodeler, Howard Theis at Wooden Dreams, reworked the floor plan to maximize space by creating “rooms we could actually use, with a natural traffic flow through each room,” Julie added. Continued on page 10

A History of the House on the Hill A shrewd businessman from Massachusetts, Socrates Nelson, settled in Stillwater and bought the land in 1848. He opened the town’s first store and later became a politician, serving in the Minnesota State Senate from 18591860. Several other

owners occupied the home until, in 1942, Miss Ethel Daugherty inherited the property. According to documents from the Washington County Historical Society* she was an unmarried woman who earned her income teaching piano

lessons in the home’s third floor; with recitals held in the parlor room on her grand piano. As Miss Daugherty grew in age, however, the home fell into disrepair. To neighborhood children it was even considered haunted at one point!

*Narrated by Sharon Lammers who, along with her husband James, purchased the home in 1967 Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

During the remodel, the Cronks salvaged most of the items original to the house, including a marble fireplace and the sink and faucet from the original powder room. Both were relocated to different rooms; the sink and faucet to what is now the third floor bathroom. Salvaged beadboard wood from the attic lines the bathroom walls and Trevor had historic photos of the Stillwater Lift Bridge enlarged and converted into a custom wall covering. Other vintage elements incorporated into the new space include barnwood accents and vintage lights from an antique store in town. Julie’s simple and classic style flows effortlessly throughout the rest of the home so that everything comes together in beautiful harmony. You’ll find Sophie, Maxwell and Ella playing games around the kitchen alcove or chasing their beloved pets, including their newest kitten Marvin Howard Cronk who was named after the home’s impressive Marvin Windows and, of course, their beloved remodeler Howard.

Boyer Bunch THE

story by KATY BAAR

When Paul and Pam Boyer got married four years ago, their blended family was of Brady Bunch proportions. Paul had three boys, Pam had three girls, but their house hadn’t grown in size with them. More importantly, the house felt like Paul’s place since the girls moved into his ranch-style rambler in Deephaven. It was time for a renovation, and they were in good hands. It was going to be a family affair. Paul is one of four owners at Boyer Building Corporation, a family business that dates back four generations to when Paul’s grandfather began the company in the 1930s. Today, Paul leads the company’s remodeling

division serving as the team’s onsite carpenter and project supervisor. Despite growing up in construction, Paul joked “the project proved to be much more difficult than if I was a normal customer.” That’s because he had to be

contractor, project manager and carpenter all while working on his current jobs. Fortunately he was able to recruit his brothers’ help: older brother Pete drew up the plans while the others pitched in on the weekends.

“We have more space to accommodate our lives now, while still maintaining the ramblerstyle floor plan that will allow Pam and I to enjoy our home for many years to come.”

The scope of the project was large and not many rooms went untouched. Paul added a powder room and master bedroom and bath to the main floor, plus an extra bedroom in the basement. A stunning covered entry greets visitors at the front of the house, opening up to a spacious floor plan with central stairway and updated kitchen. “The layout is much more functional,” Paul explained, adding, “we have more space to accommodate our lives now, while still maintaining the rambler-style floor plan that will allow Pam and I to enjoy our home for many years to come.”

Pam appreciates the thoughtful design. A view of the home’s wooded backyard is visible all the way from the entryway to the kitchen, and the dark knotty Alder island is big enough for all of the kids to gather around. Contrasting white perimeter cabinets add to the kitchen’s trendsetting aesthetic. More than anything, the home is now perfect for their expanded family. “We celebrated three graduations this year and threw one big party all at once,” Pam smiled. “Everyone got to see the house for the first time all together and it was a truly special moment.”

Three Peas in a Pod …AND A PIG! story by KATY BAAR

If it’s true that your first year of marriage is the hardest, then newlyweds Claudia and Mike were up for the challenge. The pair didn’t wait long to start a major home renovation that centered around turning Claudia’s bachelorette pad into a place they could both call “our home.” They started the process by calling Gary from Hansen Hometech, Claudia’s go-to remodeler. Gary helped Claudia renovate before, and had even transformed her Edina home into a test kitchen for her business, When the Mood is Food. Mike is also in the food industry, though they didn’t know each other until a mutual friend set them up on a date. Immediately they hit it off, and were engaged less than nine months later. They compliment each other well: Claudia being a self proclaimed “intimidating” New Yorker personality compared to Mike’s calm and detailed demeanor. Throw Gary Hansen, a “construction problem solver,” into the mix and you’ve got three peas in a pod. Hansen Hometech oversaw the ex-

16

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

pansive renovation, which involved transforming the kitchen, bathrooms and great room, all while following strict instructions to turn every room into a ‘Wow.’ Meanwhile, Mike and Claudia teamed up to create a cohesive plan for the home’s interior finishes. One major goal for the couple was to “make our home look like it was part of a master plan—not simply furniture that was an after thought,” he explained. For instance, the home’s walls were dark (painted bold colors like Roasted Red Pepper, Basil and Eggplant) so they settled on a more neutral color palette full of popular grays and blues. “For furniture, we would pick four or five vignettes and then would mix and match to create a space we both loved,” explained Claudia.

As for their relationship with Hansen Hometech, Claudia and Mike couldn’t be happier. “It’s important that even when the remodel is complete, the relationship isn’t over,” she smiled. One other relationship was greatly improved by the remodel as well. Ms. Porkchop, Claudia’s potbelly pig (yes, you read that right!) is so happy with the results. While she spends much of her time on Claudia’s farm, Ms. Porkchop enjoys life in the city as well. “She does tricks, is highly intelligent, and she’s even housebroken,” Claudia laughed. And Claudia and Mike’s relationship couldn’t be better either. But you know what they say ... A couple that remodels together, stays together.

I’m forever grateful! My owner is a food consultant and hosts lots of people to her house for tastings and parties. No one is ever allergic to a pig, so I fit right in! My other owner Mike is crazy about me! I’m pretty sure, when it comes to Claudia and Mike getting married, I was the one that secured the deal! Dazzling. BRIGHT, WHITE &

story by KATY BAAR

For as long as she could remember, Sandy Hanson has been dreaming of a white kitchen. There’s just something dazzling about that bright, crisp, clean look that she couldn’t resist. Instead, for the last 35 years Sandy and her husband Kurt, empty nesters from Minnetonka, made due with an outdated and tired space complete with laminate counters and low hanging dark cabinets that left a 12-inch gap to the ceiling. When it came time to replace many of their appliances last year, the couple knew that it

was finally the right time to get the dream kitchen they’ve always wanted. They visited Crystal Kitchen Center’s showroom in Crystal to start getting ideas, but it didn’t take Sandy long to know what she wanted. “I knew right away that I still wanted a white kitchen,” smiled Sandy.”A bright cheerful, fresh look with white cabinets that stretch all the way to the ceiling, and glass

cabinets to display all of my beautiful decorative pieces.” Crystal Kitchen Center made this dream a reality in just under six weeks. “They gave us a calendar of when things would be accomplished,” explained Kurt. “We had no delays. Crystal Kitchen Center was organized and on top of the job; they even finished a few days early,” Sandy added. Continued on page 20

The final result is a gorgeous white kitchen and spacious layout that’s perfect for hosting their children and grandchildren. Another big bonus is the kitchen’s big center island, a feature their previous kitchen lacked. “The island changed everything for us,” said Kurt. “We love all the extra space it creates, plus it’s beautiful and functional.” The glass cabinets are an elegant touch, and perfect for Sandy’s “above and beyond” approach to decorating for each holiday. “We are definitely the family home for all the holiday gatherings,” she explained. “I love decorating and especially love sharing our new space with others.” The decorative accents are sure to keep their kitchen fresh and colorful, with the ability for every decoration to truly pop amidst the gorgeous white backdrop. “After eight months in our new kitchen, I still walk in and am amazed. Before & After FAMILY FEATURE

This growing family bought their home for its great bones, open layout and amazing potential. Almost as soon as they closed on the home, the family was excited to start their first big renovation. “Now that the kitchen is complete and the main floor is fully opened up, other projects don’t seem as daunting. We can slowly continue the process knowing that our primary living area is stress free and complete.”

Favorite Feature: The duplex columns that anchor our kitchen island include USB ports for easy charging of electronics. We also love the True beverage fridge on the end of the island, and our kids love it too!

It’s your dream home. And everyone’s dream home is different. The 1100 members of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities strive everyday to keep that dream alive for families. You might want a brand new home, an older home that has been updated, or maybe just make some changes in your current home. At BATC, we work to keep your dream home affordable, safe and durable. Every day, BATC’s staff and members work with state and local elected officials and regulators to protect the dream of families to own a better home. We care about keeping fees fair and building codes simple because that helps you find your home at the right price. And tomorrow, our work will help a different family find the place they plan to call home.

It’s pretty simple — at BATC, we want you to decide where you will live and the kind of home you want. If you are looking for #YourDreamHome, you can count on BATC to help.

CONDOMINIUM VUJOVICH DESIGN BUILD, INC. 311 Pleasant Avenue, St. Paul

Corey Gaffer Photography

This gorgeously redesigned condominium is a rare gem in St. Paul; renovated from the former Children’s Hospital built in 1928. Its unique history is surpassed only by the home’s unbeatable location—just two blocks off Summit Avenue and within walking distance to the Xcel Energy Center, restaurants, bars, parks and the Mississippi River! PROJECT BACKGROUND:

FEATURES:

• 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and 1,700 finished square feet

DREAMS COME TRUE

The Bluebird House Residents

When you visit a BATC Foundation “Dream Home,” you help dreams come true. That’s because the BATC Foundation combines your $5 with the contributions of other Dream Home visitors to provide needed repairs, remodeling or even new construction for families and organizations in the Twin Cities area. The BATC Foundation, the charitable arm of the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, is celebrating 20 years of help and hope in 2015! And we continue to provide help and hope to people in need across the Twin Cities—partnering with area organizations to turn the natural generosity of our builders, remodelers and suppliers into dreams come true. This fall, the BATC Foundation is bringing two dreams to fruition. Army SPC Marco Solt is a Brooklyn Center native whose vehicle encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on his first deployment in Afghanistan. Marco lost both of his legs in the explosion and now uses prosthetics and his wheelchair to get around. The BATC Foundation is proud to be partnering with Homes for Our Troops to bring Marco and his wife Gena a brand new, specially adapted new home. Each home built by Homes for Our Troops is equipped with over 40 special adaptations including widened doorways, lowered countertops, roll-under cook tops and sinks, all designed to give veterans like Marco full wheelchair accessibility. We are grateful to our Build Partner Accent Homes who has managed the construction of Marco

Bluebird House Groundbreaking

and Gena’s home, which will be completed in October. You are also helping make dreams come true for the residents and staff of Bluebird House, a group home operated by Homeward Bound. Homeward Bound was formed by a group of parents who needed a high level of medical care for their children, but wanted a more home-like atmosphere than a nursing home could provide. Today, Homeward Bound operates three Intermediate Care Facilities and 14 group homes in the Twin Cities area for disabled children and adults. The four young men who live at Bluebird House needed more space so Homeward Bound contacted the BATC Foundation to see if we could help. A typical 1960’s rambler, none of the rooms in Bluebird are large enough to accommodate the residents along with their medical equipment. Through our Build Partner, Vujovich Design Build, we are adding a bedroom, family room and additional storage space to Bluebird House. Soon, the residents of Bluebird House will be able to enjoy a meal together or watch a movie with each other and visiting family members These are just two of several projects that the financial support of your Dream Home donation helps to make a reality. Building heart in housing means that we are able to make a difference for families like Marco and the residents of Bluebird House.

Marco & Gena Solt

The BATC Foundation thanks these BATC members who have taken the lead on these two very special projects

Green Remodeling DONE RIGHT Green build programs have been around for a decade or two. Going green when you build from scratch is a fairly straight-forward equation. But creating a green build program for remodeling is a whole other animal. But that’s where Minnesota’s Green Path comes in. We’ve built a common sense, affordable green certification program designed to verify and document green features within a wide variety of remodeling options. In the end, you get an improved level of energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality (that’s why the Minnesota Department of Health is one of our sponsors), plus water and resource management, all certified and documented with your own Green

Path Home Performance Report (HPR). The HPR will show you and any future homeowners the energy and green features that were built into your home during the remodeling process. If a blower door test was performed, the HPR will also include its Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rating.

Twin Cities MLS agrees, including green certification in their listings). While you’re probably not thinking about resale yet, it’s just one more reason to consider MN Green Path Certification.

For more informat ion about MN Green Path for Remodel ing, visit ParadeofHomes.org and cl ick on the Go Green resource page.

TOM STANGL

QA SPECIALIZES IN HOME ENERGY AUDITS

For 22 years, Tom Stangl has worked as a home energy auditor and he’s seen it all: big homes, small homes, fancy homes, simple homes. He says the one thing they all have in common is that the people living in them can be saving energy and money.

BY ERIN MATHE

&

“Technology is always changing and improving our efficiency so the challenge for me is keeping up with it so I can pass the knowledge on,” says Stangl who works with the Neighborhood Energy Connection. NEC is Xcel Energy’s program partner that conducts the audits. “I’m still learning and I love going into a home and helping people however I can.” We asked Stangl a few questions about how the audit works, the most common misconceptions and what homeowners can gain by getting an audit. Q: What’s the biggest misconception about saving energy at home? A: New does not mean efficient. People get angry when they buy a new appliance and realize it’s not that efficient. Look for the yellow energy guide tag to learn how efficient it is. Or buy appliances with the ENERGY STAR® label.

34

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

Also, if your home is cold in the winter, don’t assume you need a new furnace. Check your attic insulation and air leakage first. Sealing leaks and adding attic insulation is much cheaper than installing a new furnace.

October 2–4, 2015 | Friday, 1-7pm, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm

Q: Are there simple things homeowners can do to save energy and money?

Usually by the end of the audit, I'm offering tips they didn’t ask for but are happy to learn.

A: Always. When I do an audit I look for low hanging fruit as well as big ticket items. From there I can draw up a priority list so a homeowner knows exactly what they should do first. Low hanging fruit usually has to do with maintenance. These are the things homeowners should look at first: • Check your furnace filter. The number one way to make your furnace more efficient is to change the filter regularly. Newer homes have an air-to-air heat exchanger, also known as a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) or Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), and those have filters in them. Part of my job is to show people what to look for. • Clean your refrigerator coils. In most current models, they’re on the bottom. You can pull off the cover, clean them, and put the cover back on. In older models, the coils are on the back. • Install the following high-efficiency items: CFL or LED light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, and foam wall plate gaskets on outlets and light switches. The purpose of foam wall plate gaskets is to seal and insulate the wall cavities behind electrical outlets and switch plate covers to create a barrier against outside air. • Get a smart strip. We call it “phantom load” when there are items like cell phone or iPad chargers plugged in when they’re not in use. It sucks up energy. Curling irons and hair dryers are two other items I see plugged in a lot. If you plug them into a smart strip – which only costs about $28 – you can better control phantom loads. Two of the outlets stay hot or active and the other five go to sleep, effectively reducing the energy use for anything left plugged in.

i

Q: And which larger ticket items are the most effective or have the best payback? A: The three big things that give you the best bang for your buck are: 1. 2. 3.

Attic air sealing and insulation Wall insulation A high efficiency heating or cooling system

Q: How much do audits cost? A: A standard audit is $60, which includes a blower door test to check for air leaks; and an audit with an infra-red camera is $100. Q: What advice do you have for people looking to save energy at home?

Q: What are the types of things you review/look for in a Home Energy Audit?

A: Just get started. Here are some things to consider:

A: The first thing I ask a homeowner is “What are your concerns and why did you have the audit?” I can then build my assessment around answering their questions and concerns. Usually by the end of the audit, I’m offering tips they didn’t ask for but are happy to learn. I can give them a priority list that they can implement as they choose. These are the things I review:

• You can’t go wrong by getting an audit because you’ll get a lot of useful information and quickly recover your cost if you make a few small changes. • The Home Energy Squad is a great resource. Energy experts install a whole package of energy-efficient items in your home for a flat fee of just $70. They’re able to make changes like installing efficient lighting, faucet aerators and weather stripping on the spot. • You get what you pay for. You can buy cheap equipment that isn’t efficient but you’ll pay more for it in energy bills. A more efficient appliance will cost more up front but the savings pay you back over a relatively short amount of time. • Take advantage of rebates and incentives from Xcel Energy to help offset the cost of new equipment and finance programs through NEC. • Do the maintenance items. Clean or replace your furnace filter, clean your refrigerator coils and keep the air conditioning unit clean.

• Attic insulation, heating and cooling systems, windows, walls and appliances. • Maintenance items like the furnace filters. • Safety measures: I do diagnostic tests on the furnace, water heater, gas oven and gas dryer to make sure there aren’t leaks. I make sure they have functioning carbon monoxide detectors. People sometimes turn them off so I remind them to turn

Learn more at TheNEC.org | HomeEnergySquad.net | XcelEnergy.com

www.ParadeofHomes.org

them back on. I look for red flags – sometimes I find them and sometimes I don’t. People are usually happy if I tell them that everything’s fine and they’re doing things right. • The bill: I review 12 months of bills. Sometimes we see spikes in the winter because people use their gas furnace and keep the house really warm. Sometimes we see spikes in summer because the air conditioning is on all day while they’re at work. Some people go crazy with Christmas lights. Going over the bill is very useful in explaining where their money’s going.

Perfect Outdoor Space Story by Savannah Hemmings. Photograph provided by HOM Furniture.

Summer is associated with the great outdoors. With the frigid winter long gone, the temperatures are ideal for spending time gardening or lounging in the yard. If your property isn’t ready for such activities, and you want to get the most use out of it this season, here are some upgrade tips for your space.

Entertaining Interested in hosting some summer parties? Whether you’re improving the usability of your porch or yard, there are a few key things you can do to make your space more appealing for your guests: { E N T E R TA I N I N G }

Table & Chairs

Lighting

These are the two most important components of a party or casual get-together. Invest in some pieces to keep guests from standing or plopping down on the floor. For maximum versatility, fold-up tables and chairs are convenient. You can decorate them with tablecloths and comfortable cushions and simply fold them up and store them until your next big event. If you’re hosting things regularly, it might be worth checking out more expensive, yet more aesthetically pleasing outdoor dining sets.

Proper lighting is key for outdoor entertainment. It will not only stop guests from tripping and stumbling at your party, but it will also help to step up the chic factor. A simple string of white lights, for example, can take a plain Jane patio and transform it into a charming outdoor space. Try candles, pretty lanterns or, if you have a roof over your space, a nice chandelier.

Aesthetic Extras

Fountains & Fire

To add more personality to your outdoor party zone, add colorful conversation pieces: artwork, rugs — things to tie together the appearance of your space. The goal is to achieve a stylish yet homey feel, but also boast its outdoor existence.

With plenty of options on the market, you can include a small fountain or build a stone waterfall to bring in the peaceful sounds of flowing water. And who doesn’t love the warmth and beauty of fire, especially in the evening. You can easily find portable fire pits, or go all out and add a full-blown outdoor fireplace.

Plants

Privacy

While there are many ways to incorporate Zen, adding some greenery is a cheap, easy and perfectly sufficient option. Acquire some larger and smaller plants to add a little more dimension.

It can be tricky to truly relax when you’re in an open, exposed space. If you have the funding and township approval to build a fence — even if only a small single wall — that is a good way to close off a small area. Another great option is to strategically plant shrubs and trees to create your own hidden garden.

The key word here is “comfortable.” Rather than seek high-quantity seating, as you would if you were looking to entertain, you want to invest in something quality, something incredibly cozy. Think cushioned recliners or relaxing rocking chairs. A double hammock is ideal.

Consider installing a game shelf to hold them all, too. Not interested in board games? Set up a ping pong table instead. { P L AY I N G }

Net Volleyball, badminton, make-shift tennis — these are all activities that can be enjoyed in your own backyard. But first, you have to invest in a net. They’re affordable and effectively transform your grassy space into an arena of activity. Before setting up your court, however, you want to be sure that animal holes have been filled — as they can cause ankle injuries — and pick up any animal waste that may be lying around.

Gardening

{ P L AY I N G }

Bean Bag Toss Gardening can be done in a number of ways, including full-scale vegetable gardens that take up a huge chunk of your yard to window planters and smaller alternatives. Here are some things to help your gardening efforts: {G A R D E N I N G }

{G A R D E N I N G }

{GARDENING}

Sunlit Space

Containers

Plant Variety

You need a place that will get adequate sunlight. Whether you’re going to be digging out a spot in your yard or making use of a smaller area, just be conscientious of the natural light your plants will be receiving. You may even consider cutting back some large tree branches, if that’s what’s blocking your yard from sunlight.

Obviously containers aren’t necessary when creating a traditional in-ground garden. For other alternative forms of gardens (rooftops, porches, patios, etc.), you’ll need storage units. You can turn almost anything into a planter (old shoes, baskets, mugs, barrels, etc.), so get creative!

A lack of diversity in your garden will not only look boring but, particularly in the world of fruits and vegetables, also have a pretty lackluster yield. Gather plants that will offer different colors and different growth patterns. A robust variety of color will only help to add dimension to your garden.

This is another fun, simple family game to play on the lawn. Invest in two boards and the corresponding bean/corn bags. The boards, which can be flattened, are easy to store.

Fires ARE HOT!

Backyard fires come in all shapes and sizes: fire pits, fireplaces, and the newest type of fire feature, contemporary fire tables. This trend is gaining even more popularity this year as the range of fire feature options has expanded. Wood burning fire circle with Mesabi boulder seat wall feels like a northwoods campsite.

Photographs provided by Southview Design

According to Southview designer, Tim Johnson, fire features are popular because they are both practical and aesthetically pleasing. “A backyard fire feature provides a focal point in a landscape design. Fire is the ‘yin’ to the ‘yang’ of water features such as pools, fountains and bubblers.”

and styles. “There are almost as many options for an outdoor fire as there are homeowners,” Johnson said. “There’s something for everyone at every price point.

There is a huge array of fire features to choose from, as they come in all shapes, sizes

Larger fireplace structures offer a dramatic focal point in an outdoor living

room. Freestanding fire pits are also popular additions to a functional backyard landscape design, Johnson said. Contemporary fire tables with fire glass lend color, ambiance and artistic flair to any backyard landscape design. Generally, they are constructed of durable outdoor materials that stand up to even the harshest weather.

Gas burning fire tables are considered appliances (like gas grills) and can often be installed on a deck or in a structure.

Practical, modern, and cozy were the design requirements the design team at Mingle/ Studio M Interiors were to follow. The homeowners love for the "village" life and their realization that they were outgrowing their mid-century rambler brought them to Enhanced Interiors Remodeling for a solution. With the current one-car GAR, two BR layout and typical city-sized lot, the logical solution was an expansion of a second level. Expanding the GAR and adding a bonus room above it, along with the addition of a master suite completed this remodel. This master suite includes a seating area at the top of the new staircase, BR, walk-in closet and master BA including an oversized shower, with body sprays and a "waterfall" shower head, and a two-sink vanity. This kitchen, main level and master suite renovation is a must-see by Ispiri! This Gervais Lake area rambler received a complete main level remodel. Along with stunning updates throughout the space, the kitchen was reconfigured and moved from the front side of the home to the back. This allowed for a larger kitchen and created much better connectivity between the kitchen and living room space. The master suite renovation was a second phase project that transposed their once outdated 80s bathroom into a luxurious living space for the owners, who now enjoy a large custom walk-in closet and more functional master bathroom.

When this young couple wanted to make their recently purchased house their home, Cardinal was their choice. Working closely with the owners, the new kitchen became the gourmet center they were seeking. A patio door relocation for better use of space was the ticket. Beautiful cabinetry, granite counters, amazing backsplash, extensive island and appliances accomplished their dream. Budget in mind, the coffee stained 5-inch oak flooring throughout married nicely with the existing trim and warm paint colors. Newly designed, this 60's build is a pride to show off! Trust Cardinal!

This Second Empire home built in 1875 sits on the bluff overlooking the St. Croix river, several renovations had stripped many of the home's original features and charm while neglecting the views. A new addition built mainly on the existing foundation reorients the public areas of the house, taking advantage of the river view with large expanses of Integrity doors and windows while carefully integrating some of the original details. A new garage was built with additional bedrooms above. A third-floor roof deck and game room make this a great family home for relaxing and entertaining.

Be sure to visit this kitchen renovation by Ispiri! To create a space for the owners to entertain while also providing a space for their family living, their once cramped U-shaped kitchen space was completely opened up. By moving the dining room wall and converting the unused dining space that became a drop zone for clutter, Ispiri created a kitchen of nearly double the original size. The space now includes a large island and walk-in pantry. With amazing finishes, including DuraSupreme cabinetry and granite countertops, this kitchen now provides a great space for both family gatherings and entertaining. While keeping within the original perimeters of the kitchen space, Ispiri was able to expand the island, which creates a seating space for informal dining and provides the homeowners with much larger countertop space for cooking and entertaining. The porch which once sat as unused space off the back of the home was converted into their dining room, allowing this home to provide the highly desirable open-concept floor plan without the need for an addition or complete reconfiguration.

Much-needed updates for this late 70's Rambler. We took advantage of the lot situated on the lake by opening up the entire exterior wall and adding a series of windows. This brought the outside in! We then continued with the remodel by removing a series of walls hindering the flow. This allowed us to create a "great room kitchen" perfect for entertaining family and friends. From our very own millwork shop, Roberts' Residential designed, built and installed all of the custom cabinetry. This combined with a variegated natural maple floor and complementary millworks created a look you would expect to find in a suburban lake home.

Custom maple cabinets, granite countertops and functional center island grace the new open KT. Hickory hardwood flooring throughout the KT and DR provides visual cohesiveness resulting in an intimate yet spacious open setting for family living and entertaining. Cubbies and lockers update the rear foyer/laundry. Seamless blending of old and new gives this home a warm, welcoming ambiance.

The transformation of this 1960's rambler is both practical and tastefully done. The owners have lived in the home for almost 40 years and decided it was time for some changes. We removed the dividing wall between the living room and kitchen, moved the location of the front entry, added a main-floor laundry and redid the main-floor bath to add heated floors and an easy-access shower. We updated the doors to six-panel oak and extended the hardwood floors into the living room and hall. The stone, shakes, curved paver steps and patio make this home attractive from the street, and the changes inside make it comfortable to live in.

This 1950's vintage rambler-style home was bursting at the seams with a family of eight. We needed to add bedrooms, kitchen/family area, new entry and attached garage. This solution includes a gracious foyer, roomy mud room/laundry, cozy family room and kitchen area with a built-in banquet for eight. The foyer includes a gracious open stairway to the lower level. By reusing brick and other salvage items from the demolition we were able to create a seamless blend between new and existing.

This 1950's rambler's small kitchen and bathroom were recreated into more functional, spacious and aesthetic spaces. In the kitchen, we relocated windows and plumbing to provide a more functional work triangle and replaced soffits and a door with cream-colored cabinets instead of wood to provide more storage and brighten the space. We removed a wall in the bathroom and replaced a pedestal sink with a large vanity, installed a tile backsplash and recessed, mirrored cabinets that reflect the natural stone tile in the shower. The warm paint and tile colors and cream-colored cabinet finish transformed these spaces beautifully. A year ago the homeowners were looking for the perfect Edina home for their growing family – and they found it, except it was a bit of a fixer upper. Among other things, the kitchen was small, closed-off and did not provide the open concept living space the family desired. Today, the home has been transformed. A gorgeous open kitchen ties everything together and provides unobstructed views of the backyard and patio. A huge granite island invites friends and family to pull up a stool. No detail has been overlooked, from the custom cabinetry to the stainless steel appliances. Come see the perfect family home in Edina!

This home located in the heart of Edina takes charm to a new level. After a whole-house renovation and 2nd-floor addition, homeowners will enjoy the "city life" while living in a farmhouse-inspired cottage. Amenities include a screened-in front porch living space, brick exterior finishes, beaded inset cabinets, butler's pantry and a new kitchen. The goal was to keep as many original features as possible including oak floors and the original fireplace – now updated with a wood mantle and wood paneled front. To complete the transformation, four bedrooms were added upstairs, as well as a 2nd-floor laundry room.

Kitchen, dining, living, back entry and laundry are on the other half. Lightfilled lower level has two bedrooms, full bath, workout area, media/lounge area and space to create. This beautiful 1913 home near the shores of Lake Calhoun underwent the transformation of a lifetime. A small addition to the back of the home allowed for the creation of a beautiful period style kitchen that features a SS farmhouse sink, diamond mullion windows, custom cabinets and remnant stone. An entertaining bar features a hammered steel sink and walnut counters, while the adjacent hall sports floating birch shelves and an exposed chimney. Located in the sweet spot between Lake of the Isles, Cedar Lake and Lake Calhoun, this 1900 era home is full of character and charm. Our challenge was to incorporate modern and convenient amenities while maintaining the home's integrity. We transitioned from old to new by enlarging the kitchen and creating space for a new family room, mudroom and porch. Removing an old service stair provided room for a new walk-in pantry.
