ADVERTORIAL

We Make Window Replacement Easier! Now that you’ve decided to replace those old, leaky windows, it’s time to make some decisions. Let us help you get started with a high-level look at some of your options. Double Hung: Both the top and the bottom sash move for maximum flexibility on how much fresh air you want to bring indoors, and tilt in for easy cleaning. You can also choose single hung where the top sash remains stationary. Casement: Vertical panes are hinged on the side and open by swinging inward or outward and feature our patented wash mode. Awning: These windows are hinged on the top of the frame and swing outward from the bottom. Bay and Bow: With their threedimensional style, bay and bow windows join together in a curve or angle and “extend outward” from the home’s façade.

Bow windows create a more gradual arc with more than three windows. A bay window typically features three windows and has a head and seat board. Picture: Large windows that don’t open. They’re frequently chosen to complement windows that open, and several venting options are available. Round Top: Choose a rounded or arched top on stationary windows, double hungs or casements for a stylish twist. Specialty: Other fully customized shapes can be made to fit a unique opening or style. Some styles open, but shaped windows are often stationary.

You don’t have to go through the replacement process alone. Marvin® has a variety of replacement specialists available to create your perfect replacement process. Each of them are there to provide guidance, answer questions, prepare your quote, measure for your new windows and doors, and place your order. They will also help you get the installation process underway. Marvin products always offer advanced engineering and the highest quality construction. As a family-owned and operated Minnesota business, Marvin is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the Spring Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®.

Remodeling

WITH A PROFESSIONAL

Remodelers are invited guests in your home. They’ll be spending a lot of time with you and your family, whether it’s a small bathroom redo or a full makeover. Hiring a professional remodeler will ensure that the process will run more smoothly, and your renovated home will perform better, look better, and live better. So, don’t let just anyone remodel your home.

ALL THE REMODELERS YOU’LL MEET ON

ETHICAL BATC-Housing First Minnesota remodeler members are required to sign and agree to abide by a strict code of business ethics and agree to mediation, which BATC-Housing First Minnesota will provide should a dispute arise. Members are required to show proof that their Minnesota Contractors License is current, and that they have completed a minimum of three major, successful remodeling projects before being allowed to participate in any Remodelers Showcase tour.

EDUCATED BATC-Housing First Minnesota provides important educational opportunities to members, both to maintain their state licensing and to help improve their day-to-day business. Our courses help ensure remodelers are current on regulations, building codes, new technologies, and the latest products.

THE TOUR ARE MEMBERS OF BATC-HOUSING FIRST MINNESOTA. THAT MEANS THEY ADHERE TO A CODE OF ETHICS, ARE EDUCATED, AND ARE COMMITTED TO THE INDUSTRY.

COMMITTED TO THE INDUSTRY Remodelers who make the effort to join and participate in an organization like BATC-Housing First Minnesota show they are committed to the remodeling industry and remaining an active part of it. That’s not something you should take lightly.

how to tell IF A REMODELER IS A PROFESSIONAL

1 2

Make sure the remodeler you hire has a Minnesota contractor license. Contractor license oversight is through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Use their quick license lookup tool to confirm the company you’re interviewing is licensed. A professional remodeler will be transparent with costs and payments. Whether they operate on a cost-plus basis or another method, they’ll explain how much they earn for their services.

PA R A D EO F H O M E S TC

3 4 5

Professional remodelers always provide written contracts. They don’t want to do any work without one, and neither should you. Your municipality requires permits for most work done on your home. A professional remodeler will make sure your project is permitted and that the permit is displayed on site. Check that they are a member of a professional organization like BATC-Housing First Minnesota. When a company makes the effort to be a part of an industry association, they have access to education and connections that let them keep up with the latest trends, codes, and products. They are also required to sign an ethics agreement upon joining.

2 Tour the Remodelers Showcase

Get Cozy With Your Budget

Next, head out to tour dozens of remodeling projects on the Remodelers Showcase. You can visit all different types of remodeling projects and chat with the companies that made it all possible. It’s the best place to meet and vet a variety of the region’s best professional remodelers, without any obligation.

You should also figure out how much you can or want to spend. Meet with your financial planner to see how a remodeling project fits within your long-term goals. Then visit with a lender to explore options in financing.

Analyze Your Home Stop and analyze what works and what doesn’t in your current home. Make a list and write down all the things you love about your home, and then write down all the things that you wish were different.

3

4 Narrow Down Your Options Choosing the remodeler that’s right for you is the key to a positive experience and achieving the result you want. You’ll find lots of great options on the Remodelers Showcase. Do some online research, reach out to past clients, and look through some of their previous work. Meet with them to discuss project experience, communication style, work ethic, and what they envision for your remodel. Ask them to explain all aspects of a project, from payment and budget requirements to design and finally what to expect during construction.

REMODELING MYTHS

Debunked:

myths ABOUT REMODELING

Without a doubt, remodeling your home can be a big decision. You’ll need to deal with disruption during construction along with the occasional surprise. But remodeling can also be fun and exciting, especially with the right remodeler. Let us debunk a few myths before you get started turning your old home into your dream home.

CARDINAL REMODELING

2

I WON’T BE ABLE TO TELL WHO IS A FLY-BY-NIGHT CONTRACTOR

YOU’LL NEVER GET PAYBACK

In Minnesota, it’s super simple to confirm that you’re dealing with a legitimate professional as all contractors are required to be licensed. Just visit the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry online and check their license lookup to make sure the company you choose is licensed and has no complaints against them.

While the average payback on a remodeling project is 56 percent, that’s only important for those that plan to sell right away. The real question is what value do you place on living in a home that you love? You could sell and buy a new home, but that could cost even more. Or you could just live with that poorly designed kitchen or cold master bedroom for a while. But if you’re reading this, you’re already thinking about remodeling so just ask some of the families you visit on the Remodelers Showcase about how much they value their newly remodeled home.

3

4

FOLLOW ALL THE LATEST TRENDS

I CAN DO IT MYSELF

While it can be exciting to incorporate new trends and styles, it’s important to stay true to your own tastes. Some trends won’t age quite so gracefully, and others just won’t fit your aesthetic. Consider your personal style carefully when starting a remodel. Your remodeler should be able to help guide you through many of the tough design choices.

This is definitely a myth for more than a few of us. Besides the time commitment and learning curve, do you really want to wager that your final product will be built correctly, of the best materials for the job, and with craftsmanship that you’ll be proud to show guests? So many projects start off as a DIY and end up with a hired professional. Why not do it right from the start?

Storage was key for Courtney, who made sure there was plenty of cabinet space and shelving for children’s toys in the design. A new set of lockers in the mudroom will be the perfect drop station for the children as they get older, and the refreshed layout made space for a mainfloor laundry room.

When Jason and Courtney found their 1930s home in 2013, they moved quickly. With two big dogs, Ollie and Remy, and their first child on the way, they knew it was time to move from their first home to a place with a larger floor plan. A few steps from Cedar Lake, they found a home that had the layout they were looking for, was in a great location, and was on a large lot—so they jumped on the property. “We figured it had potential for us to do something in the future, so it would work for us at the time,” explains Jason. As the years went on, the galley kitchen became a source of frustration for the family. It was wedged between the family

18

room and dining room and made entertaining difficult. The flow felt disjointed and closed off. “We spent a lot of time in there bumping into each other and tripping over the dogs,” says Jason. They started reaching out to a few remodelers but put a pause on their project when they found out they were expecting their second child. Things picked back up in November 2017 when they went to a party at a friend’s home and noticed it had been completely transformed. “We had been there several months before that, and when I walked in everything was different,” explains Jason. The friends had just finished a remodel with Lecy Bros. Homes & Remodeling, and their positive experience convinced Jason and Courtney to reach out and get things rolling.

PA R A D E O F H O M E S R E M O D E L E R S S H O W C A S E ®

Other than the new flow and the need for increased storage, the family didn’t have a strong sense of the finishes and design they were looking for. Lecy Bros. presented five different design options for the family to choose from, explains Courtney. “The designer at Lecy Bros. was very good about helping guide us and kept us in bounds with what we wanted the place to look like,” says Jason. The design bumped out the back of the family room to square off the house, and a wall blocking off the kitchen was removed and replaced with a beam to provide better sightlines to a new gas fireplace. Plus, the main-level bathroom which “felt like an airplane bathroom,” was brought into the 21st century. The vintage charm of the original home was retained by replicating the molding and oak wood floors in the new spaces, all while opening the floor plan and blending in transitional design.

A Lake Home to Love Function and comfort take center stage in this Duck Lake remodel STORY BY WENDY DANKS | PHOTOS BY BRANDON ROWELL

After a several-year-long adventure living in Los Angeles, Carol, Patrick, and their sons, Liam (a senior in high school) and Luke (in 6th grade), decided to return to their roots in Minnesota. Carol explains that they were a little rushed coming back so she found a house to rent on Duck Lake in Eden Prairie. Originally a cabin, the home had been updated a bit some time ago, but with the great location they decided to make do. They were happy when the owner decided to sell, and began to think about making some changes. Patrick, an engineer and business owner, and Carol, an attorney, took about a year before they decided it was time to take the plunge. “For us, it was all about function and comfort, just making our house fit our family better,” says Carol. After spending some time planning what they wanted to accomplish with

their renovation, they reached out to Plekkenpol Builders, Inc., a Bloomington-based remodeler. The design process went smoothly. Carol and Patrick had created a priorities list that they shared with their project manager. He asked them if they wanted to do small changes at a time or go bigger right away. “We decided to go with remodeling the main living area right away,” Carol says. “We thought having the main level in tatters for one summer would be easier than doing it piecemeal.” Plekkenpol came through with ideas and plans that met all their priorities and brought a lot of new ideas. “They had all the rules on how to design a kitchen in ways we really wouldn’t have imagined,” says Carol. Their plans included knocking down walls to really take advantage of the lake setting, something the family knew they wanted, just not how to accomplish it. Now they’d have amazing views and a comfortable transition between indoors and outdoors. Once construction started, Carol admits it was rough, but the crew made the several-month-long period as comfortable as possible. “They were so respectful of the family and the property,” she says. “They cleaned up every single night and kept us updated all the time about what would take place the next day and the next week. We never had a single delay.”

I WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT THAT MY SPACE COULD SAVE ME TIME, BUT IT DOES. The crew even took to heart the rubber ducky that the family had placed over a projecting screw on the shower faucet. “We had stuck a rubber ducky on that screw as I was afraid someone would slip and hit their head. During construction that duck kept appearing in different piles of rubble,” Carol laughs. “They kept it around as a mascot.” Today the crew is long gone but the results of their excellent craftsmanship make the family happy every day. “We feel absolutely comfortable in the house,” exclaims Carol. “I wouldn’t have thought that my space could save me time, but it does. Everyone who comes in is just amazed. VISIT THIS HOME ON TOUR

Island Life in the City Brenda and Jeff brought their love of the South Pacific islands into their Eden Prairie home STORY BY LAURA BURT

Stepping inside the renovated home of Brenda and Jeff, you’re transported to a tranquil retreat that blends their love of the South Pacific islands with contemporary design.

the views. The kitchen and dining room were rarely used because they were so compact. “In a small house, not having a functional space was frustrating,” says Brenda.

When the couple purchased their 1988 split-level home, they fell in love with the location on a quiet street with easy access to walking trails. “We purchased our house 28 years ago as our first starter home not knowing where we wanted to live, what floor plan we would like, or what our careers would bring,” explains Brenda.

When they started searching for a remodeler to take on their project, they looked for a team that provided both expertise and reliability in timelines and budgets. Contacting past clients to learn about their experiences was a key element in the vetting process for Jeff and Brenda. Their partnership with Crystal Kitchen Center, Inc. was the perfect fit.

Nearly three decades later, their starter home is becoming their retirement home, and comfort and relaxation are their top priorities.

To create a more functional layout, the kitchen and dining room were flipped so large windows, an island, and a fireplace could be added. Plus, the laundry room was moved from the basement to the upstairs, making an everyday task a much simpler process.

Their beautiful backyard was blocked behind walls, with only a few tiny windows allowing the couple to enjoy

No longer stuck in the 1980s, the home incorporates Jeff and Brenda’s personal style all throughout the new design. “From popcorn ceilings to the whitewashed oak cabinets, everything received a facelift,” says Brenda.

Their love for snorkeling and travels to the South Pacific islands inspired the finishes throughout the remodel. Their designer at Crystal Kitchen carefully considered all those experiences and interests when crafting the design. Island rocks and the tranquility of Fiji are incorporated into the redesigned bathroom. A floating vanity creates the illusion of more floor space, and the heated floor and towel rack keep the spa-bath feeling warm and cozy.

FROM POPCORN CEILINGS TO THE WHITEWASHED OAK CABINETS, EVERYTHING RECEIVED A FACELIFT. In the kitchen, Brenda is thrilled how the countertop design suggests the sand as it washes up on the beach, while the unique, dimensional backsplash glistens in the light like the ocean in the sun. And throughout the home, Jeff and Brenda are now able to experience the serene outdoors all year long. “In the living room and kitchen, the fireplace, large windows, and art screens with nature scenes support our focus on bringing the outdoors in to create a calming, peaceful atmosphere,” explains Brenda.

Rob and Tamara found the “up north” feeling they were looking for on their wooded lot in Bloomington

W

4

STORY BY LAURA BURT

When Rob and Tamara bought their Bloomington home in 2005 they were head over heels for the location. They fell in love with the “up north” feeling the area provided without having to leave the Twin Cities. For the family, it was the perfect blend of both worlds. “We made the decision to bypass a cabin and instead spend a little more to live in this wooded area,” explains Tamara. The home was right across the street from Bush Lake and surrounded by trails for hiking and skiing and lakes for fishing, paddling, and swimming. But even with their dream location, the old appliances, an underused formal dining area, and a tiny coatroom and laundry room had them searching for a solution.

When the family started looking for a remodeler to take on their project, they wanted a team that was creative and innovative, but still able to listen to what they wanted in their space. They also were seeking a good value. “We wanted a fair price for the project, meaning we didn’t want the cheapest bid, but a

bid that would deliver the highest quality and allow us to reach them for help if necessary after the project’s complete,” explains Tamara. Rob and Tamara found just what they were looking for in AMEK, Inc., a Bloomington-based design and build remodeling company. They were looking for a team that

has strong relationships with their subcontractors and were impressed with AMEK’s close relationship with Mingle, a Plymouth-based kitchen and bath design showroom. Together, they were able to work on design solutions that fit the space and the family’s lifestyle, all while suiting their taste.

FROM A PREVIOUS REMODEL WITH AMEK

The original style of the home didn’t meld with the family’s aesthetic—orange stained oak enveloped the home. “It was everywhere! On the floors, cabinets, trim, even our fridge and dishwasher were covered in oak,” says Tamara. “It screamed 1990s traditional, which wasn’t our style.” The kitchen was reconfigured to make way for a long island where they now eat dinner with their son, Ashee (13), and daughter, Gia (11), and they transformed the old sunroom into a new dining room that feels much more relaxed. New appliances, countertops, and a special steam oven to craft lower calorie meals tailor the kitchen to Rob and Tamara’s lifestyle perfectly. Navy accents in the

kitchen add a pop of color and complement the modern, funky design of the updated fireplace area. The once cramped coat closet and laundry room were combined to create an expansive entrance and mudroom with multiple storage lockers, laundry, and a home base for their pets. As a central part of their family, they took great care to ensure their pets had a place to call their own. What was once the formal dining room is now the family’s command center—a place to work on projects, do homework, and ship and receive mail. “The command center is totally our style—constantly trying to stay organized but still being fun, playful, and creative.”

(LOWER LEVEL)

To take emphasis off of the TV screen, AMEK designed sliding doors to cover the screen and reveal artwork on each side when the TV wasn’t in use.

The reading nook under the steps is a cozy spot to read or dream.

The seating area was defined with a raised ceiling.

A Clear View Form and function come together seamlessly in this remodel by Andrus Built.

New siding and exterior doors elevate the curb appeal, while sunlight now pours through the oversized windows. An addition on the back of the home created space for expanded living and dining rooms, plus a new bedroom and bathroom. Sightlines were improved by relocating the kitchen and removing the walls that were closing off the main floor. A stone fireplace, wood floors, and updated trim and millwork polish off the home.

“

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience working with Andrus Built. Doug Andrus and his team were professional, respectful, prompt, and fun to work with. Doug consistently communicated with us through the process and we were extremely happy with the outcome of our project. We highly recommend Andrus Built.

Rambler Refresh The homeowners of this modest 1960s rambler were ready for a refresh and looking for a more open floor plan. In the galley kitchen, the peninsula, cabinetry, countertops, and flooring were removed. The stone chimney was narrowed to allow room for a breakfast bar. The home was given a modern look by scraping away the popcorn ceiling and adding a knockdown finish. The cabinets were replaced with custom cabinetry, and heated luxury flooring was installed along with Cambria quartz countertops.

Rustic Farmhouse The owners of this rustic farmhouse love to cook and entertain but their existing kitchen limited their capability to do either. Michels Homes was tasked with crafting a kitchen that would allow the homeowners to prepare gourmet meals and to create a cozy and inviting space where their friends and family could gather. AFTER

BEFORE OBJECTIVES

Create a custom gourmet kitchen Accommodate the owner’s love of entertaining by creating a functional space that felt cozy and inviting

To cater to the needs of the chef of the home, the new kitchen design includes ample storage and counter space, commercial grade appliances for high-volume cooking, and a large island for meal prep. To create an ideal space for entertaining, the wall separating the kitchen from the living room was removed, which converted the space into a functional and open layout. The new reclaimed beams, island top, statement hood, farmhouse sink, and distressed cabinetry add character and charm to the space. The updated kitchen is stylish, welcoming, and warm!

9670 - 53rd Street N. 651-739-8033 www.cardinalremodeling.com

The owners of this home wanted to shed some light on the existing family living area – the sunroom addition accomplished this in a big way. The spacious sunroom has vaulted ceilings and banks of large windows on three sides. The main floor was opened up by removing walls between the living and dining rooms, allowing a clear view from the kitchen to the sunroom. On the second floor, the existing master bath received a face lift – the shower/toilet area was reconfigured to allow for a larger shower and toilet area, and the existing jetted tub was replaced with a freestanding tub allowing for double sinks and makeup vanity.

This whole-home remodel is our modern take on Cape Cod! A bold staircase, wainscoting and other architectural details lead you from the front hall into the new kitchen. The feeling here is light and bright with white custom cabinets, large windows, and archways framing the view to dining and living spaces. Cozy up to the wood-burning fireplace where the reclaimed mantel matches the antique elm flooring. A whimsical built-in hutch is perfect for entertaining, and the new mudroom is a great place to clean up after gardening. Enjoy designer touches such as dramatic mosaic tiles, unique light fixtures and Cambria countertops. As a repeat client of Vujovich, this family saved the best for last: A new chef’s kitchen with adjoining pantry and mudroom. One end of the home which overlooks the Mississippi was transformed. First the garage was picked up and relocated, an unheated breezeway was removed, and a new foundation now provides better connections to the house. Openings to the dining room and upstairs were modified to make this family home feel more connected. Now the kitchen is a place to enjoy cooking, gathering family, and entertaining, complete with modern windows that bring in light and provide views to the gardens.

Removing walls and rearranging the entire U-shaped kitchen provided the footprint needed to create an open layout that caters to both entertaining and everyday living. They raised three daughters here and although they remodeled 18 years ago, they knew today’s innovations would allow more function and style. We salvaged existing materials and added new steel structural columns, a service bar and huge island for family entertaining. This charming colonial home, built in 1969, needed an update. The foyer was cramped and needed more space, the kitchen was outdated, and the dining room was too small. The plan was to remove many of the interior entry walls to create a TV/sitting room as well as open the foyer to the rest of the house. Relocating the kitchen was a secondary idea that allowed the homeowner direct access to the porch and thus better utilization of all the spaces. This home boasts custom cabinetry with a walnut island, hardwood floors and Cambria countertops. Truly a breathtaking transformation! To achieve these goals, we doubled the kitchen in size to include a large island with seating, installed commercial-grade appliances, and ensured ample storage throughout. No doubt, the most unique aspect of this remodel is the wood-fired oven. We removed a wall and designed a 5-foot addition off the back for expanded dining/living space. This 1930s home had a galley kitchen and small rooms. With a renovation and small addition, the vintage charm of the home was retained while opening the floor plan and blending in transitional design. A new island and separate peninsula extend the kitchen to the DR. Honed granite countertops, Carrera marble backsplash and enameled barn door, blend classic and contemporary design. A charming front parlor features original fireplace attributes. The addition expanded the GR to make it functional and added a laundry and powder bath. This home keeps the time-honored style of yesterday while combining current elements of today.

This busy family of three enjoyed their unique mid-century home off Cedar Lake, however the kids’ wing and basement were lacking character and functionality. This project features two lofts, two bathrooms and a kids’ basement refresh. In the boy’s and girl’s rooms, large closets were removed to expose vaulted ceilings and add custom lofted-beds. A hallway closet was removed and swapped out for a walk-in shower, and the girl’s bathroom was gutted to bring in more sunlight, expose the vaulted ceiling in her new shower, and highlight funky glass niches for storage while illuminating a new custom mid-century vanity and linen. Purchased for its location and lot, this 1.5-story home was torn down to make room for a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home for one-level living that checks all the boxes. The basement foundation and ceiling were kept, and the square footage of the home substantially increased to include a large living space for family gatherings and grandchildren, a custom master suite with attached laundry, an attached garage, and a 3-season porch. With two fireplaces, walnut accents throughout, custom cabinetry, and quartzite countertops, this subtly modern Midwest home meets both the needs and wants for the builder-owner and his wife for years to come. We helped this family transform their standard ‘90s cramped and utilitarian KT into a refreshingly new space. With the unique blend of natural wood tones and stone materials, this KT creates a ‘wow’ factor while still blending seamlessly with the rest of the home. The new island is a must-see, providing an exceptional space to entertain or simply enjoy breakfast. The removal of a KT wall, refinishing of the natural oak flooring, uniquely stained alder cabinets, and gorgeous granite countertops provide for a tremendous change in this home’s appearance and family’s day-today life. The kitchen highlights custom maple cabinetry with Britannica Cambria surfaces, timeless subway tile, and natural Woca-finished white oak flooring. In the owners’ suite bathroom we removed the Jacuzzi tub to create space for a large walk-in shower featuring aging-in-place attributes including a shower bench, hand shower, frameless shower door, blocking for future grab bar, 36”-high vanity and a comfort-height toilet. Finally, we rejuvenated the powder room installing custom cabinetry, Britannica Cambria surfaces and hexagon tile. For the homeowners, it was time for change from their ‘90s oak ranch. Updating the confined kitchen with dropped ceilings, tile countertops and fluorescent lighting was their primary focus for the project. By removing the separating wall to the formal dining room, the new painted white kitchen now spans the space and includes a large navy island! The kitchen ceiling was raised to match the rest of the living space and a stunning new wood hood flanked by decorative glass cabinets complete the look! The powder bath and mudroom were also refreshed in this main-level transformation!

GROWING HOMEOWNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES for all Minnesotans The Parade of Homes and Remodelers Showcase® have been connecting the homebuilding industry with Minnesota consumers for over 70 years. Showcasing homeownership opportunities in communities throughout our region has been a centerpiece of our housing market and continues to be the region’s premier homeowner event. SM

This decades-long commitment to showcasing homeownership opportunities has grown throughout the years and today is joined by our role as the leading voice for housing. This work as the leading voice in Minnesota’s housing discussion has never been more vital. Today, the rich

legacy of homeownership and affordable options for Minnesota families faces serious challenges. These include a lack of affordable home options and a widening gap in the costs to build a home here compared to other similar markets like those in Wisconsin and Illinois.

COMMUNICATING HOUSING’S MESSAGE To address this, BATC-Housing First Minnesota is committed to communicating with governments, elected officials, citizens, and voters about the importance of housing affordability and homeownership. We believe that housing is a unifying issue that will take leadership at all levels of government, from leaders in all political parties to grow homeownership opportunities. Whether in elections, city hall, or the halls of the Capitol, BATC-Housing First Minnesota is committed to elevating housing issues important to your family. Enjoy the Parade!
