ADVERTORIAL

IT’S NOT A COLOR

IT’S AN ATTITUDE Marvin Designer Black. It is the complete absence of light, and the total presence of sophistication. It is the color of high fashion, drama and mystery. Black is strong, bold and assertive. It projects an image of power, confidence and control. Elegance with a razor edge. Refined and rebellious. Modern yet timeless. Black is many things, but never is it ordinary.

It is clear that black is no longer only for evening wear or stuffy affairs. Black in every form, including matte black, is gaining popularity as a finish, from bathroom fixtures to kitchen accents and appliances. As an exercise in contrast or a spin on a classic look, black interior windows offer the chance to use a color staple to make a bold statement. That is why Marvin’s new Designer Black painted interior finish is not a color. It’s an attitude.

HIRING A PROFESSIONAL

BETTER DESIGN Professional remodelers have talented designers and architects who spend all their time helping homeowners find solutions to make their homes live better. They understand how changing one thing, like removing a wall, can impact other areas of your home. They’ll bring you creative ideas that, in the end, will improve your home, enhance its resale value and provide you with a “new” home that you’ll love.

S AV E T I M E Hiring a professional will mean you won’t be working evenings and weekends, extending the time it takes to redo that kitchen or finish the basement. A professional remodeling team will provide a schedule for completion of each aspect of your project. They’ll clean up each evening and make sure you’re thrilled at the end of the process.

5 Reasons

to hire a professional remodeler

BETTER QUALITY CONSTRUCTION Do-it-yourself remodeling is great when you have the skills, but if you (or the guy that knocked on your door offering to fix your roof) haven’t had the right training, you won’t get the quality construction you deserve. Today’s remodelers are educated and trained to understand the latest construction techniques, code requirements, and building science. There’s nothing worse than finishing a DIY remodel or paying a fly-by-night contractor and then discovering you need to hire a professional to fix problems.

BETTER CHOICE O F M AT E R I A L S Your local home improvement store has a pretty good selection of materials, but there’s a whole world of amazing products that you’ll have a hard time finding on your own. Professional remodelers know the benefits for all sorts of great materials, where to find them, how to get the best price.

S AV E M O N E Y

www.ParadeofHomes.org

BARTON CONSTRUCTION

For most of us, hiring a professional will likely cost less to achieve the same end product unless you’ve got mad construction skills. Licensed and trained remodelers will ensure your remodeled home is done right the first time. And, you’ll end up with a beautiful home that will hold its value.

are you working with a

professional? Don’t let just anyone remodel your home. Hiring a professional remodeler will ensure that the process will run more smoothly, and your renovated home will perform better, look better and live better. So, how can you tell if you’re working with a professional remodeler?

Start here! 8

HIRING A PROFESSIONAL

Licensure & Registration

Contracts

Make sure the remodeler you hire has a Minnesota contractor license. Contractor license oversight is through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Use their quick license lookup tool to confirm the company you’re interviewing is licensed and has no complaints against them. The system also has a recovery fund designed to help homeowners who have been harmed.

Written contracts are always provided by professional remodelers. They don’t want to do any work without one and neither should you.

Reputable companies of any stripe should also be registered with the State of Minnesota. Check online that the company is an actual business (a PO Box for their business address is a cue to dig deeper). The Minnesota Secretary of State provides a quick lookup tool.

Cost & Payment

Permits Your municipality requires permits for most work done on your home. A professional remodeler will make sure your project is permitted and that the permit is displayed on site.

Referrals Referrals are the life blood for remodelers. Most professional firms do a lot of business with friends and neighbors of past customers so they should always be able to provide you with several references from past customers. (You should also actually contact a few of these past customers to learn more about how the remodeler is to work with.)

Professional Organization Another way to ensure you work with a professional is to check that they are a member of a professional organization like ours (BATC-Housing First Minnesota) or the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). When a company makes the effort to be a part of an industry association, they have access to education and connections that let them keep up with the latest trends, codes and products. They are also required to sign an ethics agreement upon joining.

A professional remodeler will discuss costs and payments up front. Whether they operate on a cost-plus basis or another method, they’ll explain how much they earn for their services.

Loving their new

LOWER LEVEL

Eleven years ago, Greg and Becky found their ideal Medina home in a neighborhood they loved surrounded by trails. But, after living for more than a decade in the home, they knew the time had come to take the next step and create the basement of their dreams. Greg and Becky wanted to create a space to entertain and a hub for their kids, Emma (13) and Charlie (10), to bring their friends —the ultimate family recreation zone.

“As our kids got a little older and started having friends over, we imagined a space for everyone to be here. We wanted to be the house where everyone can gather and entertain their friends,” explained Becky. They considered moving, but they had laid down roots in their neighborhood and didn’t want to leave. Remodeling allowed them to stay near the parks they loved, kept Emma and Charlie in their school district and provided the opportunity to customize the lower level with all their must-haves.

Once Becky and Greg started the process they began visualizing the design with their architect, Windmiller Design Studio. When it was time to select a remodeling partner, their architect suggested Nor-Son Custom Builders. It couldn’t have been a better match. “We spoke with three different remodelers, but we really loved Nor-Son and knew they were a good fit for our project. We were so impressed with how organized they were,” said Becky. “We really became like family through the process.”

“We knew it would be worth it in the end ... and it absolutely was.” →

Continued from 12

The majority of the work was in the lower level of the home which kept the disruptions to a minimum, and workers could come and go as they pleased. Through the remodel they transformed their unfinished basement and added in a craft room, exercise room, family room, bathroom, bar, wine cellar, sport court and extra storage. The family worked with an interior design team that let Becky’s ideas for the look of the space sing. Sometimes they knew exactly what they wanted. Other times they leaned on the expertise and advice of the team. “Danielle from Vivid Interiors was really someone who had that vision. We could show her pictures on Pinterest or Houzz and she quickly understood the style we wanted. She went through

the details so it wasn’t so overwhelming for us,” explained Becky. “And I always said ‘I want the next thing, not the last thing.’ I didn’t want to do what people have been doing for the past two years, I wanted what people will be doing for the next five,” added Greg. “They just really got it.” One of the most difficult parts of the project for Greg and Becky was being new to the tight project timelines. There were lots of small decisions that needed to be made quickly to ensure the project stayed on schedule. “There are always unknowns that can pop up, so when you’re unfamiliar with construction projects, it can put you out of your comfort zone,” said Greg. “But we knew it would be worth it in the end … and it absolutely was.”

Charlie is able to practice his soccer moves in the sport court while Emma loves having friends over and making slime in the craft room. Greg and Becky are able to watch movies with their kids in the family room and entertain in the bar area. “It’s really nice to have the basement for sleepovers and to have all my friends over,” added Emma. “It’s a lot of space to entertain.” “The remodel exceeded any expectation I had. It was done so well and the details were so thought through,” said Becky. “There are those moments when you walk into houses on the Parade of Homes and think ‘I wish I could! I wish I could!’ and now we get to walk downstairs and say ‘We have!’”

The Australian-born couple loved how it was perched atop a 30-foot embankment that overlooked the wooded beauty of French Regional Park. “We really liked how it looked out on a pond, and feels like living in a treehouse,” explains Ros. Unchanged from 1986, the home had a number of problem areas, especially in the original kitchen and bathrooms. But “it had good bones,” Bill says. “And great landscaping.” Once they got settled it was time to make a few changes. “Bill was passionate that the master bathroom needed something done fairly immediately, and I was passionate about getting the kitchen done. The kitchen got the first go,” says Ros with a smile.

16

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

The L-shaped kitchen was definitely a mess. It was actually three rooms that didn’t work. Besides the traditional kitchen space there was a tiny hearth area plus a four-season porch that Bill thinks may have been a smoking room. “Nothing worked, including the extraction fans [or as we Americans say, exhaust hood], plus the strange enclosure [porch] was a physical barrier to the space.” Their search for a kitchen remodeler started by perusing the phone book. The nearest one was full-service remodeler, Crystal Kitchen Center. Ros stopped by the showroom and was impressed.

“Our first impressions were that this was a professional outfit with good ratings,” states Bill. When they met with a Crystal Kitchen designer and owner Jolynn Johnson, they just clicked. That was the beginning of six remodeling projects completed over the next five years. “Our experience over six remodels was that Jolynn and her team get things done on time and on budget,” Bill maintains. “We knew what we were getting into at every step, their design input was excellent and there were no surprises at the end of the day.” Ros weighed in that the “first time around we were a little more nervous and wanted to ask about everything, but we really never had to raise any issues. If there was a problem they were very honorable. They would go to great lengths to sort out what a lot of people would think were minor issues.” It wasn’t too long before they were ready to tackle the next remodel, Bill’s choice of master bath. As Ros noted “the kitchen looked so spectacular that everything else just looked worse!” That remodel got Bill his soaker tub but they just couldn’t make a steam room work upstairs. Which, of course, meant another remodel project was on their bucket list. Bill did get his steam room, and www.ParadeofHomes.org

a sauna to boot in their renovated lower walk-out level. Crystal Kitchen helped them create a family room where the couple host parties and found room to fit the steam shower in the downstairs bath and a sauna, which their two daughters love when they visit from their homes in Boston and New York.

We’ve made enduring friendships with the guys who worked in the house as well as Jolynn and her husband.

The revamped lower level also now includes a music room for Bill, a part-time musician (his specialty is Irish Celtic music). To make sure the room was correctly soundproofed, Crystal Kitchen brought in an associate in the music business to help. The final (so far) remodel was to the upstairs living room which is home to a number of antiques Bill and Ros collect. Today the room boasts a beautiful architrave ceiling and gorgeous lighting that showcases their collection. Both Bill and Ros love their new spaces, and discovered a bonus to remodeling with Crystal Kitchen. “We’ve made enduring friendships with the guys who worked in the house as well as Jolynn and her husband,” Ros reports. Next up? Who knows. “If you think the house is done there’s always another idea from Jolynn, she suggested a special train room tucked under the garage,” says Bill, a little wistfully. A Phased Approach

Story by Wendy Danks // Home Remodeled by TJB Homes, Inc.

I T WAS 18 Y E A RS AG O W H E N D E VO N A N D C H R I S D EC I D E D TO M OV E BAC K TO T H E T W I N C I T I E S. Chris was still in California when Devon and their realtor went searching for a home to buy. A few photos later, the couple decided on a 1957 residence in an established Golden Valley neighborhood.

“There was a family room addition to the back of the house that was all gray with a popcorn ceiling,” Devon explains. They spent a lot of time in that room so it seemed a natural first project.

“I didn’t see the home until we actually closed,” says Chris who remembers being a little quiet the first time he saw it. “I had a hard time seeing beyond what was there.”

They started searching for a remodeler during the Remodelers Showcase, and walked through a neighbor’s house that had been renovated by TJB Remodeling. “We were impressed,” says Devon. “We had gotten quotes and talked to other contractors, but TJB came out on top as far as price and quality of work.”

The neighborhood kids called it the “pumpkin house” due to its cinnamon orange exterior. And it had 1976 décor inside. There was foil wallpaper in the bathroom, pink tile in the hall bath and salmon tile in the master bath. But Devon knew the home had plenty of potential. They settled in and with a little elbow grease and paint, fixed a number of the cosmetic issues in the first two years. Then in 2002 they decided it was time to tackle the first of what would become three remodeling phases.

18

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

TJB gutted the family room down to the studs, added a gas fireplace, put in new carpeting and basically created a whole new room. Devon designed the centerpiece of the space, an overmantle above a fireplace surrounded by a cherry entertainment center that beautifully holds their DVDs, CDs and much more.

TJB came out on top as far as price and quality of work.

R30

It took them about 10 years to give the exterior a facelift and update all the bathrooms. Once again they recruited TJB to work their magic. The new Mission style front included fieldstone to replace the white painted brick and pillars at the front entry. The garage got an additional 10 feet for a much needed mudroom with closet and pantry. After that “we continued to putter and do things as always,” Devon reports. Then in 2017 they started talking about adding a pool to the back yard like the one they had in California. “Once reality set in (we knew pools in Minnesota don’t add a lot of value) we relooked at where the next renovation should go,” Devon continued. “Chris loves to cook, and the 50s kitchen was tiny with hardly any usable counter space.”

[Budzynski] just brought so much to the party, so many new ideas we never thought about. They loved the neighborhood and so decided to go for it. First, they hired a designer to create the plans and went to the designer’s recommended contractor for an estimate. BEFORE

AFTER

Soon it was apparent that the new contractor just wasn’t going to work. “They weren’t as detailed as TJB,” Devon explains. “It was like night and day. Originally he threw out a lowball price, but then it just kept going up.” That’s when they called Jason Budzynski at TJB who worked with them to meet their budget, but still, according to Chris, “gave us everything we wanted and more.” Budzynski made a number of design recommendations too. “He just brought so much to the party, so many new ideas we never thought about,” Devon says. “They really improved the whole project overall.” They love their new kitchen and according to both of them “it feels like we live in a whole new house!” When you visit this home #R30 on the Spring Remodelers Showcase, you can see all three phases of this beautifully remodeled home.

Thankfully, the couple and their kids, Henry (10) and Kate (7) plus their dog, Teddy, all made it out without injuries, but the house didn’t fare so well. The entire top level was destroyed and everything else was severely water damaged. “It was a horrible thing to go through,” Loretta says. Yet even while so much of their lives lay in ashes, they were blessed with “so much support from our friends and community.” One friend was Susan Denk, owner of White Crane Construction. They met Susan shortly after moving back to Minneapolis in 2012 from Rochester, New York.

20

They called Susan to tell her what happened and “she came to walk through the house right away,” Jen says. “It was clear that whether we hired White Crane or not, Susan wanted to help. She told us ‘let us see what needs to be done, even if we don’t do the work we’ll help you pick the right contractor.’” They worked with their insurance company, and quickly found out that “the insurance company cares more about cost than quality.” But, “we wanted a builder that was working for us, not the insurance company, even if it wasn’t the cheapest. After the fire, we had to make a lot of major decisions quickly, even while we were in a state of shock.”

One thing Susan did right away was to rescue the door frame where the couple had been marking the heights of their kids. “When we first walked the house and Susan saw the height board, she immediately called one of her guys to come rip it out,” Jen says. “Throughout the project, that height board leaned against the wall in Susan’s office. Every time we went there we saw it, and she made sure all the people who worked on the house saw it, too.” That sensitivity extended to making sure Henry and Kate were included in the process. “After demo was completed, Susan had her whole team come out to the house to meet the kids so that they knew who would be working on their home. It made them feel safe and taken care of,” Loretta says. As they moved ahead with the remodeling, both Jen and Loretta were impressed with White Crane’s design input. “They helped us be creative about what we could do that would make the space more functional,” Jen reports. The older bungalow had lots of smaller rooms, but now the main floor living spaces are wide open yet filled with clever storage solutions.

They helped us be creative about what we could do that would make the space more functional.

“We like older homes, even though this one was kind of funkily configured,” Loretta says. “We bought it because it had a ton of space, beautiful woodwork and hardwood floors. It had lot of character and was close to the church where Jen works.” When it came to choosing finishes and details, White Crane helped them save what they could and match the look of what they couldn’t. “They worked hard to find the right size floor boards to look similar,” says Jen. “They made sure to get the stain right to match the look of the older woodwork. And, they saved one little light in the kitchen that’s probably original to the house.” Now that they’ve moved back in, they love their new spaces. They don’t have a single regret about picking White Crane and the result. Jen adds, “I used to hate getting up in the morning and making lunches for the kids because the kitchen was so closed off. Now I come out at 6 a.m. and the kitchen is wide open and full of light and I’m so happy to be in our beautiful house.”

Story by Wendy Danks // Home Remodeled by APEX Construction Management

WHEN RICH AND SHIRLEY BOUGHT THEIR FIRST HOME 19 Y E A R S AG O, I T WA S T H E F I R S T A N D O N LY H O M E T H E Y TO U R E D W I T H T H E I R B R O K E R . The home they saw was built in 1912 and, while it wasn’t perfect, it had that certain something that just felt right. “I grew up visiting my great grandparents on our family homestead,” explained Rich. He saw some similarities between the home he remembered and their “new” home, but mostly it was the sense of nostalgia and comfort that drew him in. Both he and Shirley discovered they were suited to the older style, so they made an offer with plans to fix the things they didn’t love by remodeling. Fast-forward 19 years. Rich and Shirley just never got around to tackling a remodel until now, when family decided to come visit from Norway.

22

Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase®

“The old kitchen and one bathroom just wouldn’t work,” Rich said. With a pile of clippings and ideas that they had been gathering for the past two decades, the couple knew that they needed a remodeler who would understand their love for their home, and their desire to keep much of its character intact. They found APEX Construction Management after reviewing online referral services. “We looked for top rated firms, interviewed several and went with APEX. They were the most responsive, and we liked their approach and their people,” Rich said. “We felt they were just the right fit.”

We felt [APEX] was just the right fit.

Throughout the design phase, Rich and Shirley made it clear that they wanted to use the real antique fixtures whenever possible, and they wanted the look to be completely period appropriate. “We knew what we wanted to change. We wanted it to look old and wanted the details to be authentic,” stressed Rich. “To us, imperfections like the little slope at ceiling and floor are part of the ‘patina.’ What was most important was making sure that technology and other modern features would be hidden.”

APEX gutted the kitchen and annexed the corner porch area to square the space and improve the kitchen layout. Then they bumped out to make room for a new main level bath and entry, basement laundry and a small rear portico that opens to their storybook backyard. Modern touches in the renewed kitchen were carefully hidden while their treasured 1920s appliances took center stage. The result is a space that brings back memories of the old homestead, giving the kitchen a distinctly timeless appeal. “One of the reasons we were interested in participating in this editorial is to show people you can do this,” Rich stressed. “You can repurpose stuff. The sink, stove and refrigerator are more than 90 years old and still fully functional. They’re classic and should last for a long time.”

It was love at first sight for this homeowner and her 1915 art deco brick Colonial, but the time had come to update the home to better support her family and their busy modern day schedules. This renovation reflects the homeowner’s style perfectly with the classic romantic architecture supported with stylish flair and pops of color throughout. Home to a restaurateur and local celebrity, this classic architectural gem holds many surprises for those fortunate enough to venture past its massive revitalized flame orange front door.

• Inside, many of the home’s original architectural details were preserved while the homeowner’s personality sings through the surprises found around every corner. • By building a new, arguably equally stunning, main staircase, the rear staircase was removed to allow for an open floor plan between the kitchen and music room where the kids love to lounge. • The master suite at the top of the stairs features hardwood floors, a large walk-in closet, Carrara marble surround bubble jet tub, gold Faux Bois wall coverings in the hallway and so much more! • The octagonal office is filled with windows and natural light and has French pocket doors for privacy.

• Back on the main level, an expansive chef’s kitchen showcases custom cabinetry, a three-tiered curved walnut island with Pietra Gray stone top and a statement chandelier —an ode to the home’s art deco roots. • Classic white subway backsplash and white Carrara marble countertops line the perimeter and nod to the style of the homeowner’s restaurants. • When you venture into the mudroom addition, notice the herringbone slate tile floors and mesmerizing grass-cloth feather blooms on the ceiling. • And the real showstopper? A one-of-a-kind Blue Star 6-burner gas range with custom hot pink knobs.

The design process began with an initial visit to our client’s home to see the space. I asked several questions regarding their current space—what’s working, what’s not—and also questions to get the homeowners thinking about things that may not have crossed their mind. I reviewed images they had compiled on Pinterest and Houzz to get a better feel for their style. When entertaining, the kitchen became congested with guests all trying to crowd around the tiny island. They also had a formal dining room—completely separate from the kitchen—that sat unused.

You want the design elements to complement each other, not be “matchy-matchy.” The oil-rubbed bronze hardware and lighting in this space pairs perfectly with the stainless on the appliances and plumbing fixtures. The reclaimed range hood highlights beautifully against the clean, enameled cabinets. The metallic deco tile behind the range is paired with a clean, stone-like porcelain tile.

A drive to achieve a more modern open floor plan feel with a beautiful up-to-date look. The homeowner worked at the Minnesota State Capitol building for many years before he retired, which is what inspired their love of marble!

The new open layout connected the kitchen with other parts of the home. Additionally, the mud room now includes a butler’s pantry and a more usable, better functioning space, not to mention it is now much more aesthetically pleasing.

Think outside the box when selecting finishes. A marble backsplash isn’t something you see every day, but it’s unique and beautiful.

Build Your Career in Construction In today’s ever-changing world, finding a fulfilling career path can be tricky. It seems that parents continue to want their kids to go to college to become doctors, lawyers or business owners. And kids often want to become sports stars or movie stars or maybe well-compensated online gamers. But there’s a whole world of opportunities and careers that many young people simply don’t know about. Unique opportunities might arise that send us off in an unanticipated direction. Just getting out in the world opens our eyes about what we’re good at or what makes us happy. While about 70 percent of high school seniors start college, 30 percent drop out after the first year and just under 50 percent never graduate. Getting more education is certainly valuable, yet for many young people that traditional fouryear degree just isn’t the right fit.

What do most of us want in a job? According to Forbes, the top five benefits people look for in their job are salary, health insurance, work-life balance, opportunities for advancement and a sense of purpose. And from a Harvard Business Review article, millennials aren’t that much different from their predecessors, but place a higher priority on the opportunity to grow and advance and a desire to feel deeply committed to their position. We think there’s one career path that offers all of those and more — construction. It remains one of the last “made in America” professions and offers a wide variety of jobs and a clear pathway. For those who want a hands-on job, there’s a huge need for skilled and unskilled labor (carpenters, electricians, plumbers, masons, roofers). And those who select this career love it. Some 95 percent of those employed in the field, stay in the field.

3759 Sunbury Alcove 651-633-9211 www.julkowskiinc.com

This Woodbury home was purchased for its beautiful lot, but the interior was stuck in the 90s. Three different types of flooring and a wall between the kitchen and dining visually broke up the space. Once opened up, this created views to the backyard and flooded the space with natural light. New cherry cabinets and white trim replaced outdated golden oak. Custom metal railings add that oneof-a-kind touch. Cambria countertops, a herringbone tile backsplash, and luxury vinyl floors are easy to clean and bring this kitchen up to date!

See how you can seamlessly complete your whole-home renovation in phases! The previous kitchen which separated the dining and family room was opened up to create a more function and open-concept floor plan with the addition of an island for informal seating. The family room showcases a new cozy fireplace with built-ins. The master suite was refreshed to create a seamless main-level transformation! The deck off the back of the home was expanded to allow the addition of a new three-season porch, and finally the lower level includes a new media room fireplace, dry bar and a completely refreshed bathroom.

A challenging space can sometimes be the most interesting and fun to design! The lower level of this newer-build home in Eagan was full of angles, posts and beams. Simple but creative design helped transform this unfinished space into a retreat for the grandpa and the grandkids. A media center, dry bar, new bath and a workout room are just some of the great additions that finished off the space. Soffits frame out the ceilings for added detail and a combination of enameled trim and cherrywood accents makes this new space warm and inviting.

From confined to WOW! By exposing the staircase and removing the entry walls closing in the formal dining room and KT, sight-lines were created throughout. With hopes of a larger KT while constrained within the original footprint, the KT was extended into the previous dining room to create a large island with ample seating and space for entertaining. The biggest challenge came from removing the supporting wall housing the electrical, plumbing, requiring all to be relocated in a structural column that was made into a decorative statement with shelving to match their new family room’s modern contemporary fireplace and built-ins.

The remodeling began in the bathroom, with new flooring, mirrors and lighting, while introducing comfort-height features in the vanity, bathtub and toilet. Come see what can be done without breaking the bank! We decided to go out the back side with a 12’x32’ addition overlooking the pool. Complete with a screened room below. The addition has a large living room with fireplace and builtins adding to the existing space. We also included a master bath with large walkin closet from the existing bedroom. We created a simple mud room by moving the stair case and finished this project with a large great room kitchen. All millworks designed and built in our own cabinet/millwork shop. Fantastic finishes here. A must-see!

w.b. took this beautifully classic Mediterranean home from tired to timeless. This 1954 South Minneapolis brick bungalow lacked the design, function and layout the current homeowners always wanted for their family of four. Moving out of the Kenny Neighborhood was not ideal, and building a second story seemed unattractive to this established neighborhood. Highmark developed a plan that incorporated an open concept kitchen and living room, luxurious master suite, spacious bedrooms for the kids and a quaint screen porch overlooking the backyard. The home features timeless finishes throughout including subway tile backsplash, marble mosaics, wide plank oak floors, wool carpet and custom painted cabinetry. Refinement. This beautiful kitchen brings contemporary transitional design to a new level. Eucalyptus custom grainmatched cabinetry with a flat finish reminiscent of mid-century and Danish modern furniture and a weathered oak with a hand-rubbed finish. Floating shelves with LED lighting that illuminates the clean space. The Bertazzoni range in a rich tangerine is a bold complement to the aquamarine screen-printed Italian tile. A Samsung Family Hub TV brings the latest in fridge and touchscreen technology to the space. A recessed pantry complimented with a coffee station, completes this amazing Lake Harriet area kitchen.

4408 Aldrich Avenue S. 612-208-1727 quartersawndesignbuild.com

Quartersawn has had the privilege of remodeling this classic Colonial home twice. Our first remodel expanded and transformed the kitchen, stretching it out into the backyard, capturing sunlight, and enabling a connection to the outdoors. Our second project transformed the lower level, bringing to it the exquisite details and charm of the original home. In the new basement family room, we lowered the floor, installed a large bank of double hung windows, a wet bar and built-in cabinetry.

This 1910 story-and-a-half in Linden Hills was long overdue for a functional and aesthetic makeover. The original design had been remodeled many times over the home’s life. Cabinet storage and workable space was non-existent. Walls were removed and ceilings were raised to open up the space and create a modern, but classic galley-style kitchen. With removing walls came a new eat-in dining space with large Marvin windows shedding tons of natural light. Custom oak cabinets, granite tops and oak floors were added to the new space for a timeless and period-correct design. Full basement finish was included in the remodel as well. This home is a modern farmhouse on the outside with an open-concept floor plan and nautical influence on the inside! From top to bottom, this home was completely customized for the family of four who selected Anchor Builders because of its local prestige and process-driven approach. With 5 BRs and 3-1/2 BAs spread over 3 levels and 3,998 sq. ft., this home is functionally efficient and uses space wisely without feeling cramped. Shiplap wall accents, 5” quartersawn oak floors, detailed millwork including ceiling beams and wainscoting, abundant natural lighting, and a cohesive color palate throughout makes this home a must-see!

Struck by lightning and damaged by fire and water, the whole house needed to be put back together. Improving layout & function, this 1920 bungalow is now up to date. With structural defects caused by fire, the roof was rebuilt, walls moved to open the kitchen and add a main floor powder room & owners’ suite. An awkward foyer and living room layout was addressed by adding a wall to create a welcoming entry. Qtr-sawn oak benches match the original salvaged woodwork. Kitchen pantry space was created by removing a side door. Upstairs, the space now has two bedrooms & a playroom, & our clients again feel safe & happy in their home. 35W to West 35th/36th Street exit; head west on West 36th Street to Pleasant Avenue; head south to home. Built in 1939, this two-story colonial is in St. Paul’s sought after Highland Park neighborhood. The original footprint was 1,350 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths. Our clients decided to call this their forever home, and needed all new upgrades, modern amenities and additional square footage. We added a 750-square-foot two-story addition. The client had three wish list/priority items in this renovation: a master bedroom with en suite master bath, enlarged culinary kitchen with chef grade appliances and maintaining the era of the homes integrity.

Wow, another must-see project which shows why McDonald Remodeling is noted as the Twin Cities most awarded remodeler in 2016 – Midwest Home Magazine. This 1924 Dutch Colonial with period woodwork had a cramped, stuck-in-the-80s kitchen and upper bath. We opened up the walls to create a new gathering kitchen with clean views and a classic mix of materials. The upper bath was reconfigured in its existing space to accommodate a double shower and lavs. These spaces are new and fresh while respecting the design of the original home. 3615 Oak Creek Terrace 763-780-3262 | 763-567-1907 www.mbros.com

Contemporary addition and kitchen refresh adds needed space and functionality in this main-floor contemporary remodel. Dated honey oak kitchen cabinets were transformed by refinishing to a custom-shaded light espresso. New hickory hardwood flooring was added throughout to pull together kitchen and expanded three-season to a four-season porch, which was opened up and re-designed as an entertainment focal point with more windows and greater view of the wooded backyard. More lighting was added in kitchen and living rooms, walls painted and trim color updated to compliment flooring.

Functional, open-concept and larger kitchen topped the homeowners’ project wishlist! By converting the unused front formal living room into the homeowner’s dining room, we were able to remove the wall separating the kitchen and previous dining room to extend the kitchen into both spaces. This change allowed for us to add a large island, dry bar, pantry and opening up the entry between the kitchen and dining room to create sight lines from front to back of the home. The family’s mud room was improved by reconfiguring the garage entry and powder bath to create space for a bench/ storage system and main-floor washer and dryer.
