Family AFFAIR If you’re like me, with a large and close-knit family, you’ll definitely like our cover story this Spring. I could feel my eyes turning a little green when I read how three siblings built their new homes within easy reach of each other (my family ranges from St. Paul to Becker). And all that’s new isn’t just inside — while you’re choosing your new floor plan, features and finishes, don’t forget that you also get to choose your new neighborhood! From a substantial planned development with amenities galore to a small wooded enclave, to a certified green community, new home neighborhoods come in all sorts of styles, sizes and amenity levels.

Building Community When the Parade of Homes was new, soldiers just coming back from the Great War were making their way to the suburbs. Suddenly, the automobile was king, bringing dad to work from homes on grid-like streets via newly constructed interstates. Mom stayed home to raise the family while huge suburban indoor malls opened their doors and inner cities grew long in the tooth. Over time, new ways of thinking took hold. Women entered the workforce in droves. Schools, houses of worship, and television became the center of many families’ lives, while the old-fashioned town square all but disappeared. But as time passed, making connections with one another wasn’t forgotten, and became ever more enticing. Cul-desacs helped slow traffic for families who wanted to spend time outside. “Smart Growth” development began to make room for nature and amenities like walking paths and tennis courts among the homes.

The Modern Neighborhood

Walkability became a buzzword; sidewalks made a comeback, along with pocket parks, even community gardens. At the same time, suburban cities began a resurgence with walkable shopping, business parks where neighborhood services compete with restaurants from fast food to fine dining. The inner cities sparked with new life, too, adding condos and apartments as well as plenty of new homes to replace teardowns in established neighborhoods. Today, parks, pools, shopping and services abound in just about every corner of the metro area. Developers and cities are working together to create communities that carefully balance private and public spaces both outside and indoors. Water management requirements mean new neighborhoods are usually chock full of ponds, a delightful result of the need to purify run-off before it

leaves the development. Amenities in today’s neighborhoods range from sanctuaries where woods, wildlife, wetlands and privacy rule the day, to communities with pools, beaches, golf courses, community centers and theaters to entice families to play together. Three brothers. One builder. When brothers Brent, Corey and Casey decided to build new homes there was one thing they were all in search of—a great value for their growing families. They found just what they were looking for with Robert Thomas Homes.

Brent, Corey and Casey were no strangers to living close together. After growing up in Rochester, the three brothers lived together in Brent’s Richfield home for more than two years while Corey went to graduate school and Casey finished up college. Once Brent married his wife, Tara, Corey and Casey went on to buy condos in the Twin Cities. As all three brothers’ families began to grow, they realized they needed more space and bought new homes with Robert Thomas Homes.

Brent & Tara Brent and Tara were excited to find the perfect home for their growing family. They decided more space in a growing community was the best way to go. New construction allowed Brent and Tara to focus on finding a community with families where their children, Madison (4) and Luke (2), would be surrounded by new friends. "We realized maybe we could build what we actually want rather than finding a house and feeling like we have to make all these changes,” Tara explained. “It was about finding the house we wanted to be in for a really long time.” Tara and Brent started their hunt for a new home when they found out they were expecting baby number two. Tara got in touch with Robert Thomas after visiting their models on the Parade of Homes, and as soon as she compared them to the family’s other options, she knew a new home gave the family exactly what they were looking for.

“We were hesitant to build with the same builder as Brent and Tara at first because we didn't want our houses to look exactly alike,” Corey said, “but with the number of floor plans and different finishes available at the design studio, we were able to purchase a unique home with our own sense of style.” With a second child on the way, having a family-friendly floor plan is invaluable. "The floor plan we chose was perfect for our growing family with walk-in closets in all the bedrooms and a Jack-and-Jill bath," said Corey.

Casey & Hana The youngest brother, Casey, and his fiancée, Hana, wanted to find a home where they could start their family. When they started their search they noticed they were constantly envisioning making changes to the homes they toured. Building new gave them the open floor plan they were looking for right from the get-go.

At first, Brent and Tara weren’t sure about moving the extra few miles outside of the city. But after actually making the drive they realized the tight-knit community in the Spirit of Brandtjen Farm in Lakeville was worth the few extra miles. They closed on their Birchwood floor plan in December 2014. “We didn’t want to be too far from the city, but it was still that neighborhood feel that we were looking for,” said Tara. “Everybody is so friendly. Everybody is so helpful. Anyone would do anything for anyone.” When Brent’s two brothers followed suit and built with Robert Thomas Homes, it really wasn’t a surprise. “Everyone travels in a pack with these guys,” Tara joked. “One goes one place and everyone has to go with.”

All three brothers chose different floor plans that suited their personal tastes and fit their individual needs.

Corey & Aileen Corey and his wife, Aileen, wanted to live on a wooded lot and be closer to their work in the Twin Cities, but they couldn’t shake the value of Robert Thomas Homes. With a newborn daughter, Molly (17 months), they started developing plans to build a single family home, but still thought they were about a year away. Once they discovered there was one last lot available in Argenta Hills they jumped on the opportunity. Robert Thomas pulled their plans to build a model on the lot, and moved forward with Corey and Aileen’s St. Croix floor plan. They closed on their Inver Grove Heights home in April 2016.

“We would normally walk out of a tour and think about all the walls we would want to tear down,” Hana said. "Our home search started in Minneapolis, but there wasn't a lot of space that we could get for the cost. As our search moved further out, we thought it would be best to be in the same area as family." Once they started looking into new homes, they knew that was the best option. They began interviewing builders and looking through model homes and were impressed with the quality of Robert Thomas Homes. "You could just tell the quality workmanship in their homes," said Hana. Watching Brent and Corey's experiences reinforced their decision. They were so confident in moving forward, they put a deposit down before Hana had even visited

Staying in communities south of the Twin Cities kept the three brothers close together, but also brought them closer to their sister and parents back in Rochester.

The Perfect Neighborhood Spot The Spirit of Brandtjen Farm barn has been restored with the original California redwood and stands as a gathering area for the neighbor’s friends and family. “We use the barn a lot in the summer,” said Tara. “That’s one of our favorite places to go.”

Living so close together has allowed the families to relax and be a part of one another’s lives without having to be so planned. “Before you know it we’ll have 17 people in our house eating pizza, and it’s no big thing,” said Tara. “It’s nice to get to be spontaneous.”

Brent, Tara, Corey and Aileen all chose neighborhoods and floor plans with their kids in mind. Molly (17 months), Madison (4) and Luke (2) have enough space to play and the layouts are ideal for growing families.

Erica has been in construction for more than 10 years, starting as Carpenter Helper and working her way up to her current position as Foreman. In her current role she cuts and assembles stairs in the prefabrication shop. She always knew she wanted to build things and work with her hands. After high school she got started in the industry by studying carpentry in college. One of her favorite parts of working in the industry is the variety she has each day. “One day I’ll be building something and the next day I’ll be cutting stairs. There’s always something different,” Erica explained. Erica thinks the industry is a great fit for anyone who wants to work hard and see that hard work come to life. “You’ve got to be passionate about it,” she said. “If you like to do physical work and work with your hands, then this is an awesome industry to be in.”

They swoop in and do the finishes—the cabinetry, doors, railings and other trimmings. “I’m a really big perfectionist, so I love putting the finishing touches on someone’s house,” said Sunil. “I like seeing a house finished and then having someone walk in, and it’s their dream house. I get to see that constantly.” He loves being a part of an industry where he learns new skills and shares his knowledge and experience with others. That’s why he encourages anyone who is interested in construction to jump right in—there’s so much to learn by actually doing. “Don’t worry about not knowing … anything,” Sunil said. “This is an industry that’s taught on a day-to-day basis. And it’s a job you can start at any age.” Sunil also appreciates that hard work pays off in this industry. He’s achieved big milestones and still has goals on the horizon. “When I started working in construction, I wanted to get into that manager position,” said Sunil. “And I’m getting close to that.”
