A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS
Welcome to the Summer Journal! We can count on it being hot in Bastrop County but we really only complain about it if it's too dry; except we complain even more when it's too humid. And then sometimes when it's too dry for mosquitos and just wet enough to keep our oak trees and hay pastures green, it's just perfect. In this issue we discuss summertime camping and whether it's even possible for all but the most robust outdoorsmen and women amongst us. And that campfire cornmeal biscuit cobbler recipe on page 14, it can be cooked in your oven in the comfort of your AC. It's really a special treat just in time for peach season. The calendar of events has something for everyone and we suggest to you that White Linen Night should be "a thing" we celebrate every year to support local shops and boutiques at the time of year when other shopping holidays are months away. To get us in the mood, we're sponsoring a Pre-White Linen Night Happy Hour on the Porch. Details on page 23. And by the way, meet some of our newer Main Street shops and boutique owners. CAMPFIRE COOKIN' Cornmeal Biscuit Peach Cobbler
Sweet summer peaches are plentiful at road stands in central and east Texas. With a few simple ingredients you probably need at camp any way (cream in your coffee?) you can serve up a dessert that is so much more memorable than canned biscuits and canned peaches cobbler. Peach Mixture: 3 pounds peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced. 1/3 cup sugar 3 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 3 teaspoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Cornmeal Biscuit Topping: 1 cup all-purpose flour 2/3 cup cornmeal 1/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 2/3 cup chilled heavy cream, plus extra for brushing Turbinado sugar (optional) Prepare your campfire or preheat your grill with lid to 375 degrees. Stir peaches with sugar in a bowl & allow the fruit to macerate for 10 min. Drain the peaches and reserve 1/2 cup of the syrup. In the same bowl whisk together the reserved peach juice, lemon juice, cornstarch, salt & cinnamon until smooth. Pour peach mixture into a 9 or 10-inch dutch oven or iron skillet (with a lid if cooking on an open fire.)
Camp Cook Tip: Omit the sugar in the biscuit topping, sub homemade chili for the peaches, top with grated cheddar cheese last 5 minutes of baking. Enjoy a savory crunchy tamale pie using pantry items you already have on hand.

To make the biscuit topping, combine the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add the cold, cubed butter and use your fingertips to rub the butter into the dry ingredients, working quickly, until the butter pieces are well incorporated. Add heavy cream and gently stir until the dough comes together and all ingredients are combined. Add additional cream one teaspoon at a time if needed. DO NOT OVERWORK. Form the dough into 8 rounds, place them on top of the peaches in a circle leaving a bit of room between. Brush the tops of each biscuit with cream or butter and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake the cobbler for about 40 minutes, until the filling is bubbly and the biscuits are brown. Adjust cooking time as needed as campfire cooking is more art than science. Allow to cool slightly. Serve with a splash of cream.

Daniela Vlad opened her design studio and boutique last year at 918 Main Street in Bastrop. The fashion designer came to the Austin area for a change of climate and a change of pace after having a studio in New York's Garment District. Originally from Romania, she moved here with her mother and just recently celebrated her first wedding anniversary with husband Josh LaDue, whom she met here in Bastrop. Vlad has created an exciting space in a historic downtown building where customers can catch a glimpse of the workroom where made-to-measure designs are produced, including one-of-a-kind wedding gowns. Her ready-to-wear offerings include her own Perspective line of modern classics. She also offers alteration services and tuxedo rentals. "I love having my studio and boutique in this historic space," Vlad shares. THE YOUNG BOHEMIANS OF MAIN ST. 2020 SAW A COURAGEOUS CROP OF YOUNG BUSINESS OWNERS DECIDE TO STAKE THEIR CLAIM ON MAIN STREET. INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE, MULTI-TASKERS RUNNING ON CAFFEINE AND PASSION, THE SHOPS THEY'VE CREATED WILL LURE YOU AWAY FROM AMAZON AND BACK TO YOUR HOMETOWN DOWNTOWN. "I wanted to own a historic downtown building and my one criteria was it had to have exposed brick walls," says Desiree Laux, owner of Black and White Interiors. She purchased the building, complete with tall brick walls, at 1015 Main in Bastrop and opened her boutique and showroom just in time for the 2020 holidays. She and her husband Nick live in a historic home in Bastrop, but soon will be moving to a 100-acre farm, and that suits Laux just fine. She grew up in a big city but she's always been a country girl at heart. Her interiors are a mix of fun and sophistication, drawing heavily on her clients' unique style and adding her own artful flair. The boutique is open 7 days a week and she is available by appointment to consult with clients about their renovation or design projects. Laux oversees a team of trusted subcontractors, local artisans and vendors for her clients' projects. Her goal for the boutique is to offer design, renovation, and furnishing options all in one place. Page19
Ryan and Samantha Holiday weren't looking to open a bookstore when the circa late 1800's building at 912 Main Street in Bastrop became available. Samantha says, "We loved the building and we considered what the space was best suited for and also what Bastrop needed. Bastrop didn't have a traditional book store." Ryan is a bestselling author and avid reader who publishes a reading list each month to his subscribers, so books were already central to their lives. Renovations began in 2020 and The Painted Porch Bookshop opened this past January. The renovation included a soaring fireplace built of books as the focal point of the store. With lots of open space and comfortable seating, it's tailor-made for gathering, Samantha has recently made the store home to an antique grand piano she's had since childhood. As Texas emerges from the pandemic, she says they plan to include a larger children's area, utilizing the building's expansive back porch. The store offers other unique items besides books. Samantha confirms, "Everything we sell is curated by Ryan and myself and we've read and personally recommend every book we carry."
DOUBLING DOWN ON MAIN STREET Beth Neely and Shawna Bridgman both have a strong penchant for all things Texas, historic buildings, unique antiques & salvage, small town downtowns, and beautiful design in general. Beth, a native Texan, returned to her roots after a long stint in Los Angeles, settling in Smithville and ultimately opening the Smithville General Store - a curated gift shop and coffee bar with a focus on Texas-made goods. Shawna was managing a construction project to transform a downtown auto garage into a restaurant in 2018. It didn’t take long for the two to meet and to begin collaborating together. “With the intent of keeping our sweet historic downtown and its buildings alive and well for the long haul, we promote accelerative collaboration with local artists and other Smithville businesses.” For their latest venture, the gorgeous building at 200 Main, built in 1898 and formerly Yerger-Hill and Son, was painstakingly preserved. The building had not changed title since 1898. Smithville General Store HOME opened in March of 2020, just two weeks before having to close down due to the pandemic. Now the store is back open every weekend, Fri-Sun, and by appointment.

Summer Punchy Sangria Ingredients Makes 8 Servings ½ cup brandy ¼ cup lemon juice 1 cup frozen mixed berries ⅓ cup orange juice 1 bottle dry red wine ½ cup triple sec 1 lemon, sliced into rounds 1 orange, sliced into rounds 1 lime, sliced into rounds ¼ cup white sugar (Optional) 2 cups club soda (Optional) 1 cup chopped or sliced apples (Optioinal)
Nothing says "summer" like chilled Sangria. This punched up version of a hot weather favorite fortifies the wine and gives you options to sweeten to taste. Or skip any extra sugar and use a sweeter wine. If white linen is the dress code or you've got your summer slipcovers in place, switch to white wine instead of the more traditional red.
Instructions: In a large pitcher or bowl, mix together the brandy, lemon juice, orange juice, red wine, triple sec, and sugar. Float slices of lemon, orange, and lime. Refrigerate overnight for the best flavor. For an effervescent Sangria, add club soda just before serving.

WHITE LINEN NIGHT The first Saturday in August is guaranteed to be blazing hot in the South and unless your selling items for back to school, shopkeepers find they need to do a little something extra to lure shoppers out and into their stores, galleries and boutiques. That's how New Orleans boutiques and galleries on Magazine Street came up with the idea for White Linen Night. Offer something cold to drink, stay open into the cooler evening hours and encourage shoppers to stroll from shop to shop dressed in their best white linen before Labor Day comes round with its preachy dress code. After Hurricane Katrina brought thousands of New Orleans residents to Texas, some of them decided to set up shop for their businesses in areas that reminded them of home. Thus, the tradition of White Linen Night came to Texas. While it's usually an organized event, like in Austin's 2nd Street District and the Houston Heights, you can participate in your own hometown just by donning cool white clothes and having dinner out. Before and after dinner support your historic district businesses by doing a little strolling and shopping. We bet at least one shop owner will offer you something cool to drink.
