Hello Again,

Welcome to our Summer Issue!

This issue is jam packed with good news and interesting people. And every article is about something happening right here in Bastrop County - no road trips this time. Who knew Indian arrowheads are so commonly found here? It's a testament to just how desirable this area has been throughout time.

I think it's easier to find an arrowhead than it is to buy a gift for the dad who has everything but we've got your back with a short list of local made goodies he's sure to enjoy. And best selling author Ryan Holiday has his new book out, The Daily Dad. I'm pretty sure you can pick one up at The Painted Porch Bookshop in on Bastrop.

No matter which summer celebration is your favorite, Bastrop County has you covered with a parade or a festival complete with fireworks or even a rodeo. Have fun, stay chill (see page 26) and enjoy the diverse people that make Bastrop so cool.

Cheers!

A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS

A UNIQUE STYLE

Bastrop has a style all its own and those who make their home here take advantage of being a small town, near the big city, in the middle of Texas's big country. Bastropians are dark skywatchers, golfers, ranchers, a little horsey, artsy, outdoorsy, Main Street dreamers, who love local. If you'd like to reach Bastrop County residents, try an ad in Bastrop Town & Country magazine. It's mailed to owner-occupied homes and ranches across Bastrop County. August 18 - September 3

Almost any weekend in Bastrop County you can catch a live theater performance. Add to this the numerous live music shows and you've got a performance calendar that rivals many urban cultural districts.

Bastop Opera House

The historic opera house located at 711 Spring Street in downtown Bastrop was built in 1889. Over the last 130 years it reportedly has been a venue for traveling operas and drama companies, silent movies and early talkies, proms and recitals for local talent. An impressive schedule of shows makes it an important part of Bastrop's tourist appeal. When the Opera House is not presenting plays, musicals and dinner theaters, the company offers Academy Youth Acting Classes to insure Bastrop County has fresh talent for its theater scene for years to come. Executive Director Lisa Holcomb has been personally involved with the Bastrop Opera House since 2004 and serves on the Board of Governors for the Theatre Network of Texas. Besides Holcomb, Bastrop Opera House has eleven board members. Its ongoing success is truly a community effort. You can check out upcoming productions and auditions, buy tickets or volunteer at BastropOperaHouse.org.

Playhouse Smithville

At Playhouse Smithville, artistic director & playwright John Daniels, Jr. is in his thirteenth season. His long and impressive theater resume includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Communications from Texas A & M University, Kingsville, Texas. His inclusive approach to theater makes Smithville a perfect place for a passionate novice to get involved. In John's own words, "Theatre belongs to every man, no training is required and no rules of class apply." Exact dates and times to be announced for the Playhouse outdoor performance of Peter Pan in the park at 100 NW First Street Smithville in late June. Go to PlayhouseSmithville.com for details.

THE DOORS OF BASTROP COUNTY

Tree Houses, Teahouses & Hobbit Nests

Bastrop designer/builder Mark Korzeniewski has worked alongside architects and designers from California to Japan, where he was invited to give a workshop on building his unique elevated structures. He has been a carpenter since he was eighteen but he is most sought after today for his artfully designed garden structures, tree houses, and backyard retreats.

Landing in the Austin area in the 90s, it makes sense that Korzeniewski put down roots where both nature and creativity are prized and a treehouse for adults seems perfectly sensible. The Hobbit's Nest was started as a backyard getaway for birdwatching but evolved into a whimsical destination available for short-term rental in Paige. The owners were so pleased with his work, they commissioned Korzeniewski to build the Elf's Aerie.

Korzeniewski says his aesthetic is inspired by mountain homes and traditional Japanese architecture. "My eco/ethical inspiration is the 1960s consciousness movements." He often incorporates lumber from standing dead cedars and will bring in a mill when he's able to harvest on-site. He does take on more traditional work but be prepared to have your project elevated by his artistic eye and aesthetic. See more of his work at intergallactictreehouses.com.

The Hobbit Nest Treehouse at Lost Pines Shire, built by Korzeniewski, is a livable treehouse. With cedar walls and custom furnishing, it's currently available at VRBO.com as a unique getaway in Paige Texas. www.LostPinesShire.com. Custom treehouse Korzenierwski recently completed in Wimberly Texas is a young girls dream come true. Enter via it's ladder or kids can scamper up a corridor of twisted vines.

Keep an eye on large trees to look for signs of stress and consult an arborist if needed.

Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan so that it pushes the cool air downward.

Change your AC filter to make sure pollen and pollutants are not clogging it up.

Pressure wash your driveway and patio to make entertaining more enjoyable.

Drain and clean your hot water heaters.

Clean refrigerator coils so they run efficiently.

Check for leaks next to showers and toilets and under sinks.

Check weather stripping around doors, including your garage door. Replace where necessary to keep cool air in and hot air out.

It's HOT so don't overdo. Just one task each week will keep your home in top shape.
