There is a long tradition of knife making in Mora
There is a long tradition of knife making in Mora. We have been creating sharp knives for the rest of the world for more than 400 years. The seed of what would become one of the world’s most popular knife manufacturers was sown as early as 1891 when Frost-Erik Erson returned to the village of Östnor in Mora after four years of work as a lumberjack in North America. In the same year, he founded his timber sledge factory that manufactured sledges, trolleys, and knives for the workshop’s internal use. Back then, it was important to manage resources and to utilize the remaining material from the production was more or less taken for granted. It would later prove to be a successful business concept.
Shortly thereafter, knife production in the timber sledge factory took off and eventually became a sought-after replacement product for traveling farm traders who, through their travels in Sweden, spread the knives from Mora. By the turn of the century, Morakniv had become a well-established concept among craftsmen, giving ripples on the water. Within a few years, exports were established and the buyers were mainly wholesalers, gunsmiths, and iron traders in Europe. In 1904, Frosts had ten employees and made 19,000 knives annually and focused exclusively on knife manufacturing.
In 1912, Krång-Johan Eriksson founded his own knife production in Östnor. He had previously worked at Frosts, but did not get on well with the management and was literally fired. The idea of emigrating to North America attracted him but first he wanted to try his own luck. Together with Lok-Anders Mattsson, he founded the knife factory that would become part of Morakniv a hundred years later. There was also no emigration for Krång-Johan.
During the 1920s and 1930s, Morakniv consolidated and strengthened its position in the world, which also gave reasons for adding “Sweden” to the blade stamp. At the time, there were a number of active knife manufacturers in the village who somehow competed with each other, which led to a development for a growing market worldwide.

Eldris is the knife that fits in your pocket as well as in your backpack, the blade is 2 mm thick and 59 mm long – or in this case short. The solid blade provides both strength and safety for each cut. The ergonomic polymer barrel-shaped handle features a soft friction grip, finger guard and a 2.0 mm thick profile-ground blade made of recycled Swedish stainless steel, which provides both strength and stability in every cut. The polymer knife sheath is symmetrical, which means it suits both right and left-handed users. Our Journey started back in 1979 when we decide it was time to improve the conditions for our outdoor community. We needed products that was easy and functional to use, pack and store. Helko Werk was established in Cronenberg, Germany by a member of the Helsper family in 1844. We quickly earned a reputation as a manufacturer of high quality hatchets, axes and forestry tools, and by the early 20th Century were exporting to Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Today, Helko Werk hatchets and axes are recognised worldwide as some of the finest forestry tools available.
Our premium heads are made from C50 carbon steel drop forged by hand using open dies. The blacksmith uses tongs to hold and shape the hot steel as the hammer falls at great force repeatedly onto it. This requires a highly skilled smith with excellent hand-eye coordination and judgment, as every blow of the hammer affects the shape and integrity of the head. As part of the drop forging process, unlike pressed or cast steel heads, the axe head is struck numerous times with the hammer. This reduces the chance of cavities within the steel, improves the microstructure, and results in higher strength steel with better fatigue resistance and durability.
After forging, the blade edge and cheeks are hardened to approximately 53-56 HRC (Rockwell) by heating to 800–1,100°C and rapidly cooled by quenching. Hardening only part of the head, known as differential hardening, allows us to keep the eye of the head softer and less prone to cracking. The blade edge and cheeks are then heated again, to a lower temperature, to relieve stresses within the steel, reducing brittleness and improving machinability and impact strength. Once hardened and tempered the heads are lightly sandblasted to remove surface debris and residue. Depending on the surface finish required, they are then brushed, polished, ground and sharpened by hand.
Our premium range handles are crafted from sustainably sourced Grade A American hickory, directly imported as round timber from the USA. Our sawmill cuts the hickory logs into boards, which are then air-dried for 9-10 months, before the timber is ready to be made into handles. Each handle is then given two coats of linseed oil to bring out the grain and season the wood.
