DIRECTOR’s NOTEBOOK. NOTAS DE DIRECCIÓN Izaskun Arandia

In 2016, while working on another project, I met Vicky Lee, owner of The WayOut trans club in London. I was fascinated by her story and impressed by the impact and effect her club has had on the lives of many trans people. At The WayOut club they feel free to be themselves without being judged or their lives in danger. It is a place where they can express themselves, they can chat, dance and socialize in a safe environment. Our film tells the survival story of 5 people who are linked through the WayOut club, their safe haven. There's a little bit of everything for everyone in the film, and while it's a documentary that depicts some very rough experiences, it's also full of hope, joy and disco music that will make us want to dance again. Making this film has made me more aware of my own privilege as a cis person and I hope that this learning experience will be trasmitted through my film and that My Way Out will bring visibility to the trans community.

En 2016, mientras trabajaba en otro proyecto, conocí a Vicky Lee, propietaria del club trans The WayOut en Londres. Me fascinó su historia y me impresionó el impacto y el efecto que ha tenido su club en la vida de muchas personas trans. En el club The WayOut se sienten libres para ser ellas mismas sin ser juzgadas, ni que sus vidas corran peligro. Es un lugar donde pueden expresarse, pueden charlar, bailar y socializar en un ambiente seguro. Nuestra película cuenta la historia de supervivencia de 5 personas que se vinculan a través del club WayOut, su refugio seguro. En la película hay un poco de todo para todo el mundo, y aunque es un documental que describe algunas experiencias muy duras, también está lleno de esperanza, alegría y música disco que nos hará querer bailar de nuevo. Hacer esta película me ha hecho más consciente de mi propio privilegio como persona cis y espero que esta experiencia de aprendizaje se transmita a través de mi película y que My Way Out dé visibilidad a la comunidad trans.
