Dear readers, BASIS Vinschgau Venosta was born out of the need for a place where ideas are put into practice – a place of opportunity, a place to experiment, a place where you can meet people who actively translate theory into practice. That may sound abstract, but this is the basic attitude that can be felt here every single day: we embody a cooperative spirit of “It works if...” that can be applied to various projects. This allows us to recognize interconnections across sectors, promote imagination, and cultivate foresight. What is crucial for this? the people who come together here. People from the local population who feel a need for exchange, inspiration, and cultural interactions, people who want to try things out, people with an entrepreneurial spirit. They are all looking for like-minded others who also live by the standards of individual responsibility, respect, and empathy. A BASIS that is accessible and flexible, where people can and should create. We form a network with these people who hail from all cultures, age groups, and backgrounds. Part of this network will now be introduced in the following pages. Perhaps you will spot a familiar face or name or two…
We hope these contributions will inspire and touch you. And maybe, they will tempt you to start your own projects.
Hannes Götsch Visionary BASIS Vinschgau Venosta
WHERE FROM? WHERE TO? WHAT FOR?
The BASIS Vinschgau Venosta association board on the history, mission and vision of the initiative.
Since its foundation in 2019, the BASIS Vinschgau Venosta association which is located in the former Drusus barracks has been striving to give a place with a difficult history back to the local population. Almost 100 years ago, the area was expropriated to build a fascist military base. After occupation, siege, military service, and years of vacancy, we have now been working here as BASIS for almost 5 years to heal old wounds and turn the barracks area into a place for the people of the valley to come together, reshape and redesign. We want to give the barracks a new context, far away from conflict and violence, and create attractive places that can be used by everyone.
People often talk about living innovation. As a hub and business incubator, we try to bridge the gap between innovation in the classic, technological sense, and social innovation that arises from the community and is actively shaped by it according to its needs. BASIS aims to be a point of attraction for those who have stayed in South Tyrol, those who have returned, and those who have left, and to offer perspectives beyond the traditional career and life paths. Through international networking, we bring ideas and input into the Venosta Valley to make it future-proof as well as attractive, and to promote urban development, which does not mean urbanization, but diversity. We want to revitalize and strengthen the rural area without exploiting it.
BASIS Vinschgau Venosta is a space for enabling and facilitating, of experimenting with ideas and materials. We are looking for potential, not perfection, for positive friction that generates energy, allows flexibility, and motivates people to engage with and welcome others and new ideas. This is necessary to
enable holistic development for the Venosta Valley, alongside traditional economic models. We want to demonstrate on a small scale that there is collective action and thinking, aswell as cooperation instead of competition. We want to reorganize project development around topics such as creative and circular economy, energy and agriculture, culture, tradition and cultural heritage. However, we do not want to focus on these topics as individual sectors, but rather as a whole. Education, social life and culture should be accessible to all, regardless of age group or educational background. BASIS, its spaces, the barracks area, can be seen as a social laboratory, a playground where resources are redistributed to benefit the quality of life and needs of local people. Here we meet as equals, can focus on strengths and try to compensate for weaknesses together.
As the board of BASIS Vinschgau Venosta, it is important to us to engage with different realities of life, to uphold justice, and to live the joy of sharing. We do this also for ourselves, to develop personally and professionally and to contribute our skills. We want to provide new perspectives on how our society is organized. BASIS Vinschgau Venosta is a vision that is upheld by the collective and that can and should be shaped by everyone. With the example of BASIS and together with the local population as well as people from elsewhere who are contributing their knowledge, we hope to be able to show that innovation is an important tool for the development of a location, for the economy, tourism, culture and all those who want to participate in it.

SILANDRO LIVES INNOVATION
Mayor Dieter Pinggera on Silandro as a location for innovation, BASIS and his outlook on the future.
Silandro now has an international reputation as a location for innovation, especially thanks to your commitment. What vision are you pursuing? My vision, or rather the vision of the municipal administration, is that BASIS continues to evolve and flourish. The current stage of development is already very pleasing. In my opinion, we are moving even faster than hoped, the international reputation and the network are very good and the take-off after the pandemic has been successful. My wish would be to be able to fully convince the local business representatives and population of the advantageous development for the Venosta Valley and Silandro thanks to BASIS.
How do you perceive Silandro compared to other municipalities in South Tyrol? Silandro is a very attractive municipality thanks to its size and central location in the Venosta Valley. We have all the services that a town like Merano has: We have a hospital, a secondary school center, we constitute an administrative center, we have all the branch offices of the provincial administration and associations, and we can offer hundreds of jobs. Moreover, we have a successful manufacturing and trades sector, a flourishing agricultural economy, a well-developed public sector, and a strong service sector. The weakest sapling in our economic landscape is tourism, but we are working on developing and unfolding its potential. Thanks to all this, we have an enormous quality of life in a municipality with around 6,000 inhabitants, which the people of Silandro appreciate and which also attracts people from the surrounding areas.
It took a lot of visionary spirit and courage to launch and support a project like BASIS. What was your motivation? When the opportunity arose to negotiate the purchase of the barracks area, former Provincial Governor Durnwalder asked us to think about the continued use of the area. We started a citizen participation process, in which Hannes [Götsch] was already actively involved. Already then, the idea of a business incubator and innovation center was put forward, and after we had broken down the many collected visions and wishes into feasible plans, and given that there was also support for the idea in our administration, the project was then implemented step by step.
Do you still remember the beginnings of the project? After countless discussions and negotiations, we were happy to win Hannes Götsch as a full-time civil servant in the municipality of Silandro with the task of writing and implementing BASIS as an ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) project. This was a true stroke of luck. The first conversations with the provincial authorities were always positive and open-minded. In the beginning, there was talk of creating the project as a satellite to the NOI Techpark and creating contact points in this direction. We succeeded indirectly. In terms of funding, we did not quite achieve what we had hoped for, which would
“BASIS is important because it has become central to the South Tyrolean cultural landscape. It acts as a source of inspiration, professional development and training, cultural promotion, and support for artists, and it provides great appeal and reputation for our province and beyond. In short: BASIS is indispensable.”
Philipp Achammer, Provincial Councilor for German Culture and Innovation, Autonomous Province of Bolzano-South Tyrol
have given us more security. Nevertheless, we are in a good spot, and much can still develop over the next years.
Years later, BASIS enjoys an international reputation. Does that fill you with pride? It does fill me with great joy and pride indeed. It was a long, hard road with many persuasion efforts. We have poured our heart, soul, and energy into it, but the great efforts have paid off, as you can hear and see. Take the example of the previous Director of Spatial Planning, Frank Weber: He was travelling to Basel for his department. When he asked university and academic representatives what they knew about South Tyrol, their answer was, “BASIS Vinschgau Venosta”. That is very telling.
Do you think the model of BASIS could also be interesting for other municipalities in South Tyrol? Yes, I would welcome further initiatives, although such projects require a municipality of a certain size. I would also like to say that the low-cost acquisition of the barracks area and its economic benefits for the municipality that were included in the concept for BASIS made it much easier to gather the political support necessary. This was a great opportunity for us right from the start, allowing us time and pre-financing, as sooner or later there would also be an economic balance. To add to that, I am pleased that there are or will be other BASIS sites in Malles and other places.
If you could wish for something for BASIS and Silandro, what would it be? As I said, my greatest wish is to convince everyone in Silandro and the Venosta Valley of the opportunities and potential that BASIS offers. We are getting there, but it is an ongoing process. There are different organizations and associations here every day, and events and trainings take place regularly. Many people have come to know and appreciate BASIS. It should become self-evident that BASIS is an indispensable economic and social component of Silandro and the Venosta Valley. (MT)
MY BASIS
The so-called Ideenspüle (Ideas Sink) provides space for creative and social projects. Everyone can come to and use this space for their ideas to actively shape new offers and events. The current programs of the Integrierte Volkshochschule Vinschgau (Venosta Valley Integrated Adult Education Center Cooperative Society for Further Education & Regional Development), the Elki Schlanders and the Fabe Family Counseling Service, for example, are mainly aimed at children and people with disabilities (examples of a few projects: Kribus Krabus, Krempempl, Malen nach Herzenslust (Painting to Your Heart’s Content) and more). One young participant tells us about his experience:
My name is Mattis and I’m ten years old. I signed up for the Krempempl project for the first time three years ago. At the beginning, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. Some of my friends had also signed up, so at least I wasn’t alone. We were all excited to see what we would experience with Krempempl. And I can tell you: We were not disappointed!
The special thing about Krempempl for me was that we were able to discover lots of new things there. It was like a world outside of school, where we could do things that were either not allowed at school or that we simply hadn’t done there. We did handicrafts, painted, experimented and so much more. I particularly enjoyed the crafts projects. It was just great to create things and then take them home with us.
Every time we went to the Krempempl, we were excited to see what new things we would create. And once we were at BASIS, there was so much else to discover! Sometimes, we also explored the garden or played basketball. Altogether, Krempempl was a great experience. Not only did I learn a lot, but I also made new friends and had a lot of fun!
The Ideenspüle (Ideas Sink) is open to everyone and can be rented flexibly for all kinds of colorful things. From painting, handicrafts and upcycling to workshops, courses, and children’s birthday parties – anyone who needs free space to unravel their creative ideas can simply get in touch
“BASIS is important because it stands for diverse, open, and accessible cultural programs. It brings an urban feel to the wonderful landscape of the Venosta Valley. BASIS is certainly not an easy undertaking, but it is a courageous one.”

BASIS: A PLACE TO BE
Whether it’s Open Stages throughout the Venosta Valley, his work as a music teacher or even performing with the traditional brass band of Silandro: Dolev Nahoom Sanbira always finds something inspiring to do. In the following, he will share a few thoughts about his time at BASIS:
“Initially, stepping into the local community as an outsider felt daunting, but soon it evolved into a transformative journey. Upon arriving at BASIS, I was greeted with warmth and genuine curiosity. Engaging with the local community, which spanned generations, became a pivotal part of my experience. Through events like Open Stages and Live Sessions, I had the opportunity to interact with musicians from diverse backgrounds and age groups, fostering connections and cultivating a strong sense of belonging. All in the purpose of consolidating a community of musicians. BASIS’ unique locations like the KASINO and Salotto served as perfect venues for these gatherings. The KASINO stood out to me as an ideal venue for large concerts and parties, while the Salotto, in contrast, exuded a more inviting and laid-back atmosphere.
One of the highlights of my time at BASIS was the BASIS of Music, an educational program for kids, which brought together young talents from the region to nurture their musical skills. We met once a week to learn and practice Afrocentric style music, emphasizing improvisational skills and venturing into new musical genres. This aspect, very often neglected in standard music education in South Tyrol, found a home at BASIS, reflecting its commitment to addressing overlooked community needs. BASIS shines as a hub for cultivating a vibrant and inclusive community, evident through projects like BASIS of Music and Open Stages. These initiatives exemplify BASIS’ commitment to providing a platform where individuals from diverse backgrounds can collaborate, create, and connect, reinforcing its role as a welcoming space for all.
What really enabled me to jump head-first into the BASIS creative stream, was residing right here in the midst of it all. The Maisonettes at BASIS provide a comfortable and convenient living space, equipped with the essentials for daily life. While they may be small, they offer a cozy environment where residents can immerse themselves in the vibrant community of BASIS. Life in the Maisonettes is characterized by a sense of closeness to all the happenings at BASIS, allowing residents to easily participate in events, projects, and social gatherings.”
Dolev Nahoom Sanbira is a musician and community developer. He studied at Rimon (Israel) and Berklee (USA). Throughout his career, he composed and arranged music for bands and individuals, created sound installations, organized festivals, and a one-month music residency during the pandemic. He’s also a music theory educator and taught classical saxophone at Giva’taim Conservatory (Israel)
“BASIS is important because, without BASIS, there would be no coworking spaces and no support for start-ups in Silandro. BASIS is also important because its program focuses on ecological, social, and economically sustainable topics, which are the order of the day. Lastly, the BASIS association is important because it is a wonderful addition to the cultural program in Silandro, especially concerning youth culture.”
“BASIS è importante perché senza BASIS non ci sarebbe nessun coworking e nessun supporto per le start-up a Silandro. Ma è importante anche perché BASIS si concentra su temi ecologici, sociali ed economicamente sostenibili e questo è ormai all’ordine del giorno. L’associazione è altrettanto importante perché rappresenta una splendida aggiunta all’offerta culturale di Silandro, soprattutto nell’ambito della cultura giovanile.”
Four cozy maisonettes on two levels offer the possibility of short-term living at BASIS (1-6 months). They are temporary homes for people who want to do research residencies, coworking, project or educational stays and artistic residencies. Each apartment is unique and can accommodate different numbers of people. Simply ask the BASIS team which small home is ideal for your needs

LOCAL WINDOWSHOPPING
Apart from the barracks area, there are additional BASIS spaces, for example, in the Silandro pedestrian zone. BASIS lokal serves as a location for pop-up stores, workshops, and readings, and it can be rented as a meeting room or coworking space. The schaufenster* (shop window) is an exhibition space and gallery for local and international artists. In the following, two of these artists introduce themselves:
Liane Stadler: “I am a graphic designer and founder of Linienwerk Graphic and Paper Goods. My main focus is illustration. I like to work in a minimalist way, trying to reduce objects and landscapes to their essentials, but still conveying a certain atmosphere. My graphic studio has been around since 2009, the first Paper Goods collection was released in the spring of 2019.
Various of my works are currently on display at the BASIS lokal in the center of Silandro. I found out about this space thanks to Sarah Trevisiol, who worked for BASIS at the time and contacted me. I was very excited and confirmed straight away. Since last summer, my illustrations have been on display there in poster format, along with postcards and other graphic products. There is also a pop-up exhibition that adds to the overall design and look of the space. Many new people have gotten to know my work, contacted me or browsed my online store and made purchases after seeing my contact at BASIS lokal
The schaufenster* and BASIS lokal are ideal for turning ideas into actions. They constitute spaces for cultural, social, and communal exchange on eye level. They are the stage to present my work in a modern and urban environment. For me, BASIS creates a bit of a big city feeling in the countryside. This is a great added value for us South Tyroleans. It makes the Venosta Valley innovative and diverse.
At schaufenster*, people have the opportunity to tell their stories and show their work in the middle of the municipality and therefore community. People who have often never been noticed in this way, even though they live in the same town. In return, it is an opportunity for the townspeople to participate in the BASIS concept. They get to see that there are many forms of creativity and that everyone can be a part of it. For me
personally, it’s an enrichment for Silandro! A schaufenster* - a shop window, if you will – like this could also be very interesting for other municipalities and their diverse people.”
By the way: The BASIS lokal is open every Thursday – for your different ideas or simply as a consumer-free communal space with an intriguing record collection - for listening, chatting, and spending time together
-
offers artists and creative people the opportunity to exhibit their work and exchange ideas with interested parties. Would you like to show your work and make your ideas visible? We have the place for it!
Elfi Somavilla: “I am a freelance artist in Silandro, where I have lived and worked for 40 years. My medium is ceramics in the applied and artistic field. I came across the schaufenster* by passing by as I was walking through the pedestrian zone. Last summer, Mara Stirner hosted an exhibition there which I visited with interest. At the exhibit, there was a leaflet encouraging artists to also exhibit their works there. After my big exhibition in Stelvio, I felt the schaufenster* was a good opportunity to make my new works accessible to many visitors here - especially those who were not yet familiar with my work.
The open door invites you in and the closed shop window allows you to visit the exhibition in peace. My exhibition was very well attended. In fact, so many interested people came to the opening and the finissage, that some of them could not fit inside. Even people who don’t usually go to art galleries came to see my exhibition and I had many good conversations about my work, which both impressed and delighted me.
The collaboration with BASIS was professional and I was able to design my exhibition according to my ideas. The set-up was uncomplicated, the lighting of the exhibits was excellent and if I needed anything, I was assisted quickly. The schaufenster* in Silandro is an added value for the town and offers artists and craftspeople an affordable gallery or, alternatively, a small temporary workshop. In addition, there is one less empty space in the middle of the town, and the pedestrian zone is becoming more lively and buzzing again. This revitalization in turn promotes interest in the schaufenster* itself, which is a window into BASIS. In my opinion, both have great potential and offer an opportunity - especially for the younger generation - to easily make future projects in the Venosta Valley come to life.”

“To me BASIS is important because the site’s land value is so high in that part of Europe that you’d expect the entire site would be torn down and made into a hotel, luxury apartments, or another boring commercial zone... Yet, it is a thriving cultural centre. Why? Because a few young dreamers and a lot of community energy made an alternative vision for the space come true: a youth-led, entrepreneurial, welcoming space for all, maintaining social cohesion, sustainable cultural dynamics, regional and local attractivity and international connections. The true “dream, believe, transform” spirit of Trans Europe Halles. One really needs to invest in these communities. They are the real changemakers.”

HERE’S TO BEING GOOD NEIGHBORS!
I had been setting up base camp in the startbase coworking space at BASIS for a while, but had never really explored its vastness. Armed with a spontaneous thirst for adventure, writing materials and coffee, I finally decided to make my way through the urban jungle of houseplants and found two other coworkers with whom I could chat.
Exchanging ideas with like-minded people from the same sector is good, but you stay in your own bubble. At BASIS, you meet lots of different people and think outside the box. Apart from that, coworking spaces in the city are usually small and cramped, you don’t feel as comfortable. The location here at BASIS with its large, high rooms is great, as is the connection to the makerspace: I mainly develop software, but there are also hardware components. Until now, we had to use external 3D printers when we needed a prototype. This is of course done more quickly and easily here now.
Ben Ratschiller: Good morning! Who are you and what are you doing here? Stefan Wenger (photo: person on the right): Hi, I’m Stefan and I moved back to South Tyrol last summer after twelve years in Graz, Austria. I recently started my own business as a web developer and am now here in the coworking space.
Manuel Zoderer (photo: person on the left): I’m Manuel, and I came back to South Tyrol three years ago, after fourteen years in Graz as well. I’m a software developer and founded Timeular together with colleagues in 2016. Our work has always been remote and location-independent. Even in Graz, I was mostly working from home and coworking once or twice a week, and I’m continuing that at BASIS.
How did you find out about and join BASIS coworking?
SW: Katrin [Gruber] from the BASIS board and I went to secondary school together, so I had already known a lot about BASIS. Thanks to Hannes [Götsch], I had also heard about the plans of repurposing the barracks area years ago. Before that, I was always employed by
companies and worked onsite or from home during the pandemic. Now, it’s my first time having a workplace in a coworking space.
MZ: I also first heard about and then joined BASIS via Hannes. We spoke on the phone a few times at the start of the project, and then it was on the news a lot over time. It was clear to me that I would use the coworking space as soon as I returned to South Tyrol.
SW: I also found it practical, as you don’t need much as a web or software developer these days: peace and quiet, a monitor, computer, fast, stable internet and occasionally a printer. So you ask yourself: Should I set up an extra room at home or look for other affordable options? Options like BASIS!
What is special about the BASIS coworking space?
MZ: Coworking spaces in Graz are, for example, very dependent on the industry you work in: You know that in this coworking space, there are the designers, and then you know that in that coworking space, there are programmers. Each industry kind of keeps to itself.
Do you attend the community lunches organized twice a week? SW: Very much so. It’s nice to sit together and have a relaxed chat about what’s going on. And the food is great.
MZ: Depending on when I’m here. But if am here, definitely!
How do you use the coworking space? Are there fixed working hours for you or do you come in spontaneously? MZ: I usually come in on Thursdays, that’s my coworking day. As a coworker, you have access 24/7, but I like to come in at around 7.30 am. It’s nice and quiet then. Stefan is here much more often, he always arrives at 8.30 am. My routine is to answer a few emails by then and then have a coffee and a chat with him. That is an important social aspect of coworking at BASIS, as is the community lunch.
So good neighborliness is important? Is there a lot of private and professional interaction? MZ: Yes, neighborliness is a good word for it. Back here in the coworking space, we are the software development corner, and the more creative people work in the front. In
a way, small neighborhoods have formed, but entirely by chance - because everyone was free to choose from the available desks in the coworking space.
SW: Nevertheless, everything is interconnected: I’m a web developer, then there are photographers, copywriters, architects, graphic designers and project managers. These are all professional fields that complement each other and can be interlinked. We interact with each other, we help each other and pass on tips and perhaps jobs, or we work together on a project via BASIS. On top of this, the uncomplicated and helpful support of the BASIS team is very valuable.
Would you recommend the BASIS coworking space to others? SW: Definitely, I have already done so several times. Also because of the possibility of overnight accommodation for people coming from further away. And because everything is so fast and easy: You sit down, clarify a few admin-

istrative details, set up the computer and everything is ready to go within fifteen minutes.
MZ: For me, the biggest reason for recommending the space is the community. That honestly makes up 90% of the overall package for me. I could probably do all the work at home, but it’s difficult to work from home alone all week because there’s no social interaction. You have that all day long here. (BR)

CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURIALSHIP
BASIS offers a wide range of services for entrepreneurs and start-ups: studio spaces and ateliers for artists, workspaces in the coworking space, access to workshops and a digital lab, advice on project development or starting a business, support with grant applications and funding, or as a platform for networking and exchange. In addition to the spaces and services, there are also offers such as Impact Investment, which not only supports the local economy but also aims at actively strengthening and shaping it with local players. Noa Paul and Werner Schönthaler are two of them. With their company SAPPA panels GmbH, they want to bring sustainable materials to the interior sector. They are exemplary for a new kind of entrepreneurs and the innovative spirit of the Venosta Valley.
“BASIS è importante perché è un luogo di incontro interdisciplinare. BASIS è una fabbrica di idee dove le menti creative e critiche pensano in modo consapevole contro le regole. È un hub per comunità interculturali provenienti da una vasta gamma di settori e paesi. E BASIS si trova a Silandro ed è quindi la dimostrazione migliore che l’innovazione e la trasformazione non avvengono solo nelle città e nei centri urbani. BASIS ogni giorno è un’opportunità e può essere ovunque le persone lo vogliano.”
“BASIS is important because it is a place for interdisciplinary encounters. BASIS is an ideas factory where creative and critical minds think sensibly against the rules. It is a hub for intercultural communities stemming from a wide range of fields and countries. Also: BASIS is located in Silandro – and it is thus the best proof that innovation and transformation do not only take place in cities and urban centers. BASIS is a daily opportunity and can be wherever people want it to be.”

Thomas Moriggl, CEO Moriggl GmbH and impact investor BASIS
The Kreativwerkstatt in the left half of the Palazzina Tagliamento is an integral part of BASIS. A total of 17 artists, craftspeople and associations have set up their studios and workshops there.
When we meet for our online conversation, they are both in the car on their way to work meetings. They tell me enthusiastically that they officially founded their company SAPPA panels GmbH a week ago. It constitutes the fusion of their expertise: Noa is an industrial designer with a focus on sustainable materials, Werner runs the company Schönthaler Baustoffe with his siblings and specializes in hemp processing. Together, they produce aesthetically pleasing hemp acoustic panels.
What sounds quite straightforward now was a long process driven by passion and vision. Four years ago, Noa researched the use of natural building materials for her Master’s thesis in Israel. She was particularly interested in hemp and stumbled across Werner online. She first came to Werner’s farm as a harvest helper. “That was an important experience,” she says. “I had to go back to Israel, but decided to focus my work on hemp.” The exchange with Werner continued and a government grant enabled her to come back and then implement their shared vision. Many key moments of this were and are closely linked to BASIS: Even before BASIS moved into the Drusus barracks, Werner
had taken Noa to the area and introduced her to Hannes Götsch.”I was impressed and thought: Wow! This has potential!” says Noa. When BASIS opened its doors, Noa signed up for coworking right away, attracted by the open exchange with like-minded people and the BASIS team. “BASIS is an oasis,” Noa emphasizes, “, especially for people from urban areas who are looking for community and cohesion.” Werner nods. He was immediately convinced by the importance of the project for the Venosta Valley. That’s why Schönthaler Baustoffe was involved as an impact investor right from the start. Impact Investment is a form of investment that considers social or ecological impact, often across industries and sectors, as part of its strategy instead of pure return.
Noa and Werner are a wonderful example of such an interdisciplinary approach. You can find traces of this everywhere at BASIS: For example, they set up a studio in the space of the Kreativwerkstatt as a practical example of how existing buildings can be made habitable simply and sustainably. They now use it for workshops and as a showroom for interested stakeholders and customers. Moreover, there is the Tiny FOP MOB: It is a small house, a real laboratory, that now stands on the former military drill square and that was built by Werner together with eurac Research They carried out material tests here, tested CO2 absorption, thermal capabilities and atmospheric effects, and used it for training purposes to pass on their knowledge of natural materials.
In conversation, it quickly becomes clear that SAPPA panels GmbH is not a classic profit-oriented company. The two explain to me how important it is to them to take on ecological, social and economic responsibility and to educate people about sustainable materials, not just to sell a product. They represent a new entrepreneurial spirit in the Venosta Valley. “The Venosta Valley is bursting with creative spirit, more so than other valleys. Many interesting people with a wide variety of ideas live here,” explains Werner. It is clear that they are both part of it, Werner as a native and Noa as a Venosta Valley resident by choice. They show that this is an ideal place for visionaries.
Before they move on to their next meetings, I ask them one last question: “Why should people come to BASIS?” Noa smiles: “As I said, BASIS is an oasis, a place for community and exchange, an international meeting place. Entrepreneurs are supported here with input for their ideas. The mere fact that BASIS exists creates opportunities to meet new people.” Werner waves off Noa’s question as to whether he would like to add anything. She has hit the nail on the head. We say goodbye and know we will meet again soon, either at one of the many events at BASIS or for a coffee at Salotto. (AH)
KASINO –SOUNDS GOOD!
Hans Zoderer comes from Silandro and has lived in Vienna since 2014. He is a member of the Drahthaus collective and works with artists in the label and live performance sector with his agency vulkanmusic. For three years now, he has been the booker for the BASIS music program. His interests lie in diversity and niches, in music and in society in general.
How does a concert at KASINO come about? First there’s an idea, directly from our team or via requests or recommendations from agencies or artists. I enter and categorize all recommendations into a large database that I can refer to when planning events. Then comes the booking process: booking bands, arranging accommodation, coordinating schedules, gathering promotional material, production and tech. And then comes last but not least: the concert, live and in color.
What musical program is offered at KASINO?
We have a self-imposed cultural mission: We aim to offer a mix of popular and niche formats to complement the local cultural offerings. KASINO offers a range of styles and formats that are usually covered by several venues: from electro and dance clubs to indie and punk to theater and film or even business conferences. KASINO is very well equipped from a technological point of view and can be used flexibly for various formats. That’s why we also rent it out to external organizers for events: graduation balls, company parties, theater performances, yoga classes, and much more. This, in combination with the other BASIS, offers and the location’s proximity to nature, is unique.
What makes KASINO special? KASINO is a very interesting place with history and a good vibe. It’s not an expensive, soulless big-business machine where fat acts with little cultural impact are booked. KASINO is about sustainable engagement with culture and a strong community that pours its heart and soul into it and that is not interested in making a quick buck. The peripheral location also brings added value for the local community and culture: the range of concerts and cultural events is generally smaller in the
countryside, which in turn brings together different milieus and age groups and creates cross-generational collaboration between music scenes. This shows how important cultural diversity is for education and community. Our aim is to develop the region through culture, to create cultural and thus educational opportunities in the periphery, and to prevent all the interesting people from moving away. KASINO also contributes to safety and inclusion in nightlife, for example in cases of sexism, homophobia, or racism. If something happens at a concert in the city, it’s more anonymous. In the countryside, it’s much easier to talk with each other directly and bring about more change.
What is your vision for KASINO? I definitely see the potential to connect the Venosta Valley with other places through KASINO Through broader awareness and the expansion of accommodation options in the region, I can well imagine that people will travel from further away for events despite the poor public transport connections. Personally, I also think it’s important to build up a veritable music industry in South Tyrol. There are few professional structures, most of what we have in the region is organized by volunteers. That’s great, but if you really want to help artists in South Tyrol in the long term and make music a serious career, professionalization and internationalization are important. It also would make sense from a cultural and economic perspective, given that the music industry covers many professional groups. KASINO also has the potential to strengthen impact and cultural projects in South Tyrol in general. (JZ)
KASINO is a fusion of a record studio and multifunctional event space. It is the perfect location for events of all kinds - from club nights, theater performances, and concerts to panel discussions and conferences. The 670 m2 culture club offers space for up to 700 visitors and has high-quality sound and lighting systems, a retractable stage, a well-equipped bar, flexible seating arrangements, and more. If you want to organize an event or party, KASINO can also be rented!

Noemi Boneccher, 20 years old, is one of the volunteers at BASIS who helps out in the KASINO bar. The valuable help of our volunteers is what characterizes the BASIS spirit: lived togetherness.
“BASIS offers many things that are not otherwise found in the Venosta Valley, and for which you often have to go to cities. I have come to realize that BASIS is especially important for us younger people. But it is also important for adults because otherwise there are not enough cultural or communal offers for them here either. People are talking more and more about BASIS and many have lost their inhibitions or reservations about coming here. BASIS has found a place in our society.
What I always remember about an event at KASINO is the cleaning up afterward, when we chat about the event with the last visitors before they go home at some point. There are then also those quiet moments where I calm down a bit and reflect on the event. In those instances, I think about what we’ve achieved, and we exchange ideas as a team and are happy about another successful evening.
You always feel welcome, no matter who you are. I appreciate the diversity, warmth and open-mindedness here.”

AT THE BASIS
Georg supported the BASIS team as an intern for three months. In the following, he tells us what it’s like to work for BASIS and to be part of the team:
“Hello, my name is Georg Hohenegger, I’m 27 years old and I’m from Vezzano. The first time I heard about BASIS was from a former colleague, and also on the media. I first came into contact with the people there when, sometime later, I needed a workspace
with internet access for my further education course. This course in bookkeeping and accounting also includes a practical part. Fortunately, I was able to complete this here and worked with the BASIS team for a few months. The ideas that are constantly being implemented here are diverse. For example, I find the wide range of cultural and, above all, musical events very interesting. Athletes also get their money’s worth, e.g. when an exciting film evening about freeriding (for experienced skiers) is organized at BASIS. Community activities are also fostered. As part of the BASIS crew, I participated in this year’s Silandro carnival parade for the first time. During the working week, the community lunch is held several times, where all the members of the BASIS community come together and enjoy their lunchtime together in the Salotto. There is also a hint of international flair - a constant arrival and departure. People from all over the world work at BASIS and that, I think, is what makes this place so special.”

“BASIS is important (to me) because it explores potential conflicts. It is the only place in South Tyrol where the logic of public service coexists with a bottom-up approach to space management. This tension creates a creative atmosphere that attracts artists and cultural creators ‘against the current’ from well-connected areas to a geographically isolated space. BASIS has the potential to drive a trend reversal. At a time when traditional social and economic patterns are failing, the cultural sector must urgently create conditions for new scenarios of social development. The essential ingredient is ‘creative conflict,’ the confrontation between opposing, marginal, and radical visions that merge into a shared synergy. BASIS is one of the hubs in Europe where this is practiced daily.”

“BASIS is important to me because it serves as the heart of the Venosta Valley for business, informal education, economy, art, and culture. It provides space for everyone and acts as a voice for shared visions and a future-oriented South Tyrol, never forgetting the periphery.”
“BASIS è importante per me perché, in quanto centro della Val Venosta per l’imprenditoria, l’educazione informale, l’economia, l’arte e la cultura, ha spazio per chiunque, si fa portavoce di visioni condivise per un Alto Adige adatto al futuro, e non dimentica le periferie.”

Investing in the future
Through the Impact Investing program, BASIS can invest holistically into the Venosta Valley together with partner companies. This means that investments happen with the specific intention of achieving measurable, positive effects on the environment or society, which in turn strengthens the economy and thus companies.
We would like to thank our partner companies of 2023 for their support and excellent cooperation and look forward to continuing to shape the Venosta Valley together in the future!
We would be delighted if other companies were to join us in shaping the future and share and work on their needs with us.
Together and for each other BASIS thrives on the energy and commitment of the people who help shape this place: members, users, employees, or people from the village and valley community. Without their valuable willingness to help, BASIS would not exist. However, special mention must be made of the many volunteers who not only support our work and activities but also actively help to shape and enrich them.
We say thank you!
The BASIS team and board would like to thank all members of the association for their support, commitment, and the trust they have placed in us. BASIS is a place for experiments and making ideas a reality. We are happy to work together, enter into exchanges, and act as a collective. To anyone who feels like it: You are always welcome to contribute your own ideas at any time!
“BASIS is important because it is a priority for the Department of Europe of the South Tyrol provincial administration to drive innovative, future-oriented, and balanced economic and social development in our region. As an example of effective EU policy implementation, BASIS is a project we are proud to showcase to make the use of funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) more tangible. At the same time, BASIS provides valuable coworking spaces for our employees from the Venosta Valley, and we have come to know and appreciate the innovative potential of the people and places at BASIS through various international conferences. Europe unites the diversity of people and cultures and is primarily a peace project—so is BASIS! We are happy to bridge the gap from Bolzano to Silandro and are grateful for the moments of valuable exchange and fruitful collaboration in the service of future generations, who should see at least as much potential and space for development in our land as our forebears did.”
