BAKU FLAME TOWERS Year _ 2007 - 2014 Client _ Azinko / DIA Holdings Area _ 280,000 m² Location _ Baku, Azerbaijan Role _ Lead Designer Baku Flame Towers, designed while at HOK, embodies a radical architectural language that boldly breaks away from conventional design. The project draws inspiration from Baku’s historic significance as a center for fire worship and features three towers atop a triangular podium, its undulating forms and sharp edges embodying a sense of dynamic energy and movement. The residential tower, standing tall at 39 floors, offers 130 units that boast panoramic views of the surrounding area. The hotel tower, positioned on the northern corner of the site, features 250 rooms and 61 serviced apartments spread over 33 floors. While the office tower, with its net 33,114 m² of office space, anchors the western end of the complex. The retail podium, composed of titanium pavilions that cascade down the steeply sloping site, serves as a mediator between the scale of the towers and the intimate surroundings. These pavilions provide leisure and retail facilities, creating an interactive and engaging space for both residents and visitors. The project was awarded through an invited competition in 2007.

Oceanna Year _ 2007 - 2014 Client _ Grenadines Homes Area _ 280,000 m² Location _ Lagos, Nigeria Role _ Lead Designer / Principal in Charge Inspired by shells found along Lekki Beach, Oceanna uses precast concrete clad with mosaic tiles to give the project its sinuous and evocative facade. The centerpiece is a 25-storey mixed-use tower. Crafted to maximize views from within, while simultaneously screening the interior space from the sun. Glass panels create a subtle undulation of shadow and light as their shape and density changes according their position on the tower. The overall effect is that of a series of elegantly stacked shells. The masterplan strategy is to generate a holistic live/work lifestyle destination. With offices and residential linked together by the recreational garden space that forms the heart of the development. The two residential blocks are arranged to shade the green spine running through the project. Residential units are designed to look into the green-spine, while simultaneously having spectacular views out towards the Atlantic Ocean. Each apartment includes its own terrace, and the undulating forms of the cantilevered balconies provide shade, while giving the two blocks their unique architectural character.

Jeddah Metro Masterplan Year _ 2015 Client _ Metro Jeddah Company Area _ +350,000 m² Location _ Jeddah, SAUDI ARABIA Role _ Lead Designer Main Station This design of the Jeddah metro was the end product of a two-stage design competition for the city’s new urban transport system. The project includes the design of the underground stations, water taxi stops, bus stops and an intermodal station as well as the urban design of the areas surrounding each node. The design proposes a common language inspired in equal parts by traditional Arabic patterns and the coral infused stone from which the historic city was constructed. These references are reflected both in the design of the buildings and in the way the urbanization is dealt with. The emphasis on pattern applied to modern organic forms was a considered response to the context. Much like the region’s traditional architecture, the white shell like structures work as filters reflecting direct sunlight and reducing to dramatic effect, the impact of heat and light on internal spaces.

BBC Worldwide Year _ 2016 Client _ BBC Area _ 45,058 m² Location _ London, UK Role _ Concept Design Lead The design of the new headquarters for the BBC was intended to serve as equal parts newsroom and flagship for the venerable BBC brand. With the largest newsroom in Europe, BBC New Broadcasting House is the home for the BBC’s national and international broadcast journalists. Home to nearly 6,000 staff, three 24 hour news channels, nine radio networks and 26 foreign language services. Built around digital technology the workspace was designed to raise quality and enable new more efficient ways of working. The unprecedented opportunity of the coming together of different elements of the BBC services demanded a design that encourages knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation; as well as a space that is more open to the public, allowing people to interact with and learn about the amazing work of the BBC.

BBC Worldwide Year _ 2016 Client _ BBC Area _ 94,025 sq. ft. / 8,735 sq. m. Location _ London, UK Role _ Concept Design Lead The new headquarters for BBC Worldwide, the primary commercial arm of the British Broadcasting Corporation, transforms the broadcaster’s historic Stage 6 at Television Centre into an open, flexible environment. The design promotes BBC’s iconic brand and facilitates creativity and knowledge sharing among 1,200 employees. The industrial design aesthetic draws inspiration from the Television Centre’s 1960s origins as the “television factory” and former home of BBC News. To create an open, efficient workspace, the design relocated four central lift cores to a windowless wall on the east, replacing them with a feature spiral stairway. This helical staircase acts as the main circulation route for staff, providing physical and visual links between the six office floors. A daylight-filled, circular atrium creates a ground-floor gathering place. Combining bench workstations with loose furniture options accommodates activities ranging from focused work to small or large meetings. Workstations radiate out from the atrium, with the quietest locations placed along the glazed perimeter. Surrounding the staircase and atrium are flexible, secondary settings that encourage collaboration. Enclosed meeting rooms are located deep inside the building.

Global Business School Year _ 2019 Client _ Shababco Area _ 8,735 m² Location _ Jeddah, KSA Role _ Concept Design Lead Saudi Arabia is a society in transition, moving away from the oil industry and focusing on technology and education. The design for the new Global Business School needed to reflect those changes. To encourage social interaction, the design created coeducational facilities that ensured no social boundaries or hierarchy could be assumed at the school. Integrating sustainable features, also integrated a sense of forwardthinking innovation. The design embraces Saudi culture while emphasizing technology, innovation and youthful energy to create value within society.

OLC (One Less Car) Year _ 2022 Client _ Spec Area _ 180,000 ft² Location _ Culver City, United States Role _ Lead Designer / Principal in Charge This urban infill project, adjacent to Jefferson Station in Culver City, proposes the addition of a residential tower to a narrow sliver of land between the metro line and a public parking deck. The project aims to provide new housing units in an area with limited available space while taking advantage of the site’s strategic location near transportation infrastructure. The proposed tower design responds to the site’s constraints while offering a distinctive and modern architectural presence. The narrow site measures approximately 4,500 square feet, with a length of 180 feet and a width of 25 feet. The tower takes on a slender and elongated volume that follows the site’s narrow width, rising up to 25 stories tall. Each of the tower’s residential units features outdoor terraces, providing residents with access to outdoor spaces and panoramic views of the surrounding area. The landscaping incorporates native plant species that require minimal irrigation and maintenance. The tower’s façade combines setback glass and metal panels to create a sleek modern aesthetic while also providing thermal insulation and reducing solar heat gain. The tower’s location between the metro line and the public parking deck presented several challenges for site planning. To mitigate the noise and vibrations from the metro line, the tower’s wider lower form is designed as a buffer zone with mechanical rooms and amenities located in the central core. The tower’s residential units are situated on the upper floors, with each floor housing four to five units that range in size from 500 to 1,200 square feet. As an optional element, the tower’s design incorporates a dedicated landing pad or helipad specifically designed for drone operations. This pad would provide a safe and secure area for drones to land and take off, creating a unique opportunity to integrate the project into a future-proofed multimodal transport network.

APA nef Year _ 2019 Client _ nef Area _ 20,500 m² Location _ Istanbul, TURKEY Role _ Lead Designer / Principal in Charge APA Nef is a commercial building set within Istanbul’s affluent Levent business district. There are a total of 14 floors of leasable office space with 7 basement levels including both habitable space and car parking. The composition works within the site limitations to create a connection between the two building blocks by off-setting the vertical atrium which extends through the building opening it up to the shared space between the two. The façade is designed as a seamless skin with graded opaque fritting which reduces solar gain. Balconies have been created on either elevation to provide relief to the façade and a vista overlooking Levent and the Bosphorus.

Al Madinatayan Makkah Complex Year _ 2014 Client _ TBC Area _ 3500 hotel rooms Location _ Makkah, SAUDI ARABIA Role _ Lead Designer / Director in Charge Located 1 km from the Al-Masjid al-Haram, which houses the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, the Al Madinatayan project is a Hajj focused hotel complex. The importance of the location and purpose for the hotel guest’s visit required the design be in keeping with key tenants of Islam. It was vital to ensure that this once in a lifetime opportunity for many was made exceptional by all the aspects surrounding their stay. Rather than rely on faux traditional architecture so prevalent in Saudi Arabia’s holy cities, an emphasis was placed on authenticity, materiality and harmony with nature. The design is a calculated abstraction of traditional and contextual elements. The massing references the five hills that used to form a rim around central Mecca. The five hill are formed from the extrusion of traditional Islamic pattern, the walls of each mass defined by a curtainwall based on traditional mashrabiya screens. The bold geometric facade is the first layer of a high performance sustainable façade. Situated in a narrow sloping site with limited frontage, a landscaped plane that seeks to blur the distinction between levels runs gently up the site. A series of traditional Islamic gardens are distributed vertically , offering peaceful seclusion from the outside world, these gardens are intended to augment the pilgrims’s journey adding a meditative quality to their Hajj experience.

nef 09 Year _ 2017 Client _ nef Area _ 30,740 m² Location _ Istanbul, TURKEY Role _ Lead Designer / Principal in Charge NEF 09 mixes workplace and residential uses within one complex. The two towers each house a flexible stack of uses allowing each floor to be configured as residential units or discreet office spaces. “Flexing”with market shifts in this rapidly evolving market. Amenities are strategically distributed about the scheme. Cinema rooms, fitness suites, terraced gardens and meeting facilities were also designed to flex between business and residential uses. Stainability was an integral part of the design, movable shading devices create an active facade that sits atop a base constructed of locally sourced stone.

nef 11 Year _ 2016 Client _ nef Area _ 23,000 m² [ 250 UNITS ] Location _ Istanbul, TURKEY Role _ Lead Designer / Principal in Charge NEF 10 and 11 is a mixed use scheme that introduced a new level of density into one of Istanbul’s oldest districts. The scheme includes three, ten to 13 story towers. The language of the buildings was designed to encourage an iterative appearance with varied massing and changes of plane intended to give the buildings a an ever evolving appearance. The design of the towers was intended to encourage vertical planting and green edges which would blend the rectilinear geometry with vertical green spaces. Sustainability was an integral part of the scheme from the onset with the design of shading devices, locally sourced materials and green walls using grey water collected at source .

BMW Iberia Year _ 2002 Client _ BMW Iberia Area _ 18,133 m² Location _ Madrid, SPAIN Role _ Lead Designer The design of the Madrid BMW Center was developed for an invited competition in 2002. The massing represents an early experiment with flowing forms combining elements of automotive design and architecture. While inspired by the mundane ramps of a parking deck, the design is intended to capture the fluidity of air moving over an engineered surface. The site’s sloping topography creates the opportunity for the masses to emerge from the hillside as if summoned from the ether. The building’s exterior is a simple arrangement of glass, steel, creating a harmonious blend of transparency and solidity. Large glass panels allow abundant natural light to penetrate the interior, while the metal planes seem suspended in space flowing gracefully away from the sloping site. Functionally, the space is divided into three masses with differentiated uses which flow seamlessly from one to another. The showroom area takes center stage, featuring BMW’s latest models, each carefully positioned to highlight their unique design features, with the halo models occupying the elevated space at the top of the ramp. Adjacent to the showroom, a dedicated customer lounge, and repair reception anchor the composition of space. Overall, the Madrid BMW Center’s architecture seamlessly combines contemporary aesthetics with functionality, creating a captivating space that reflects BMW’s commitment to luxury, innovation, and the ultimate driving experience. The project was completed by Rafael de La-Hoz

Client _ Majid Al Futtaim Area _ + 200,000 m² Location _ RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA Role _ Lead Designer The design includes the central spine which runs through the length of the Mall of Saudi masterplan. The spine starts in the south, with the main South Events Plaza (SEP) and the Cloud, visible from the highway leading to King Khalid International Airport. The SEP is fronted by a large linear public park from which the Green Wadi concept starts. As if a recent rain has greened the wadi, and the flow of water & greening spreads across the site, greening the plazas and the internal Central Galleria. The focal point of the SEP is the Cloud, which borders the plaza, embracing the theatre and cinema at either end, and providing internally an experiential gallery space with a rooftop terrace, and externally a canvas for digital media. The canopy which rings the plaza is not only a shade device, but a surface for digital display, allowing the plaza to transition from a landscaped filled park during the day to an entertainment destination in the evening. The North Plaza is the second outdoor space, north of the Central Galleria. Facing the community side of the masterplan, two levels of restaurants overlook a central public garden. To the east and west, hotels connect into the North Plaza, with their own internal courtyards, which create a series of more intimate spaces accessible from the central spine.
