TEN’SHADE’ITY

is a tensile canopy-like componency system of modular aggregation. A system that generates self-supporting shading structures, adaptable to different requirements, scales, geographical, economic and social contexts.

The components are articulated in a dynamic equilibrium, defined by linear rigid elements organised under structural principles of tension. Thus, the formal resolution of the system is no other than the materialization of the structural diagram, and all its possible variations.

The constructive definition of the system employs economically accessible elements such as bamboo rods and steel cables that require low-technology means of manufacture and assembly. The utilised materials seek to portray the dichotomy between the seeming fragility of bamboo and its true constructive capacities. Contrasting the conventional ideas of bamboo as a mere aesthetic/decorative element, with its genuine structural potential and identitarian features.

The design was developed from an iterative process between physical prototypes at different scales, combined with digital simulations, which allowed to understand both, the relationships of geometric and structural co-dependency between elements, as well as the variations and architectural possibilities of the system.

TEN’SHADE’ITY was implemented as a first shading prototype for a tactical urban intervention developed by “Ciudad de Bolsillo” together with the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) in Ciudad Juan Bosch, Dominican Republic.

TEN’SHADE’ITY

es un sistema tenségrico de agregación radial de componentes modulares de un sólo punto de apoyo, capaz de generar estructuras autoportantes tipo sombreadero, adaptables a distintos requerimientos, escalas, contextos geográficos, económicos y sociales.

Se trata de cuerpos en equilibrio dinámico, definidos por una serie de elementos lineales que operan bajo principios estructurales de tensión. En este sentido, la resolución formal del sistema no es más que la materialización del diagrama estructural en sí mismo y de todas sus posibles variaciones.

La definición constructiva del sistema involucra elementos económicamente accesibles y que requieren de baja tecnología para su fabricación y montaje. El repertorio material utilizado (varas de bambú, cables y fijaciones de acero) busca dar cuenta de la dicotomía entre la aparente fragilidad que sugiere el bambú y su real capacidad constructiva, alejándose de lo puramente estético/decorativo en el uso tradicional de estos materiales, evidenciando su verdadero potencial estructural, carácter e identidad.

El diseño fue desarrollado a partir de un proceso iterativo entre exploración de prototipos físicos a distintas escalas, combinado con simulaciones digitales, lo que permitió entender tanto las relaciones de co-dependencia geométrica y estructural entre los elementos, así como también las variaciones y posibilidades arquitectónicas del sistema.

TEN’SHADE’ITY fue implementado como un primer prototipo de sombreaderos para una intervención de urbanismo táctico desarrollada por “Ciudad de Bolsillo” junto al BID (Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo) en Ciudad Juan Bosch, República Dominicana.
