In the early 1970s, Bascom Palmer’s Ophthalmic Biophysics Center made this rotating table for retinal detachment surgery. Gas was injected into the eye and the patient remained face down during the surgery.

Dear Friends and Colleagues:
After eighteen years, I am transitioning from my role as chair of the department of ophthalmology. I would like to express my deepest thanks to Bascom Palmer’s outstanding team of clinicians, educators, and researchers, as well as to our stellar support staff. Our journey of excellence has been supported by the University of Miami leadership and staff, and many of our community partners.
Providing outstanding clinical care to patients, conducting leading-edge research, and educating the next generation of vision professionals requires a clear vision, a deep commitment to excellence, and a steady focus on the day-today details. During my tenure, our team has worked tirelessly to achieve this.
I would like to express my gratitude to our philanthropic donors and to our colleagues at institutions worldwide who work with us. We also appreciate the support from federal, state, and local organizations that acknowledge the importance of our services.
Serving as the Institute’s director, I have had the opportunity to deepen Bascom Palmer’s connections with professionals across the Caribbean, Latin America, and worldwide. Collaborations in education, clinical practice, and research are essential for providing top-tier vision care to patients throughout the Western Hemisphere. Recently, our Institute opened a satellite branch in Abu Dhabi, UAE, bringing our advanced specialty services and medical training to the area.
Our dedicated team, together with alumni worldwide, takes pride in upholding our long-standing commitment to enhancing vision, preventing blindness, and expanding expertise in ophthalmology. We achieve this through compassionate care for patients, pioneering research in vision science, and ongoing educational efforts.
Looking ahead, our clinical and research teams will persist in tackling the most complex vision problems affecting children, adolescents, and adults. Additionally, our Institute’s medical education program will uphold the highest standards in ophthalmology training. We have created that remarkable culture at Bascom Palmer and am confident it will continue in the future.

Dr. Alfonso led Bascom Palmer to a higher pinnacle in education, patient care, and research than could have been imagined. In all three of our departmental missions we are clearly “second to none.” I can think of no one who could have provided more collaborative and courageous leadership through the last 20 years. The faculty has increased not only in number but in quality. Our house staff remains the best in every category including diversity. The Transformative Leadership of
For 18 years, Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., has led the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute with unwavering dedication to its mission of excellence. Since being named chair of the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and director of the Institute in 2007, he has guided the nation’s top ophthalmology program through a transformative era. As he now transitions from these leadership roles, Alfonso will continue serving on the faculty and stewarding Bascom Palmer until his successor is chosen.
“Bascom Palmer’s clinical, research, educational, and community service programs are thriving, making this an ideal time for a leadership transition,” said Alfonso, who holds the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Chair in Ophthalmology. “I look forward to expanding my patient care and deepening relationships with the donors who are so vital to advancing our mission.” In keeping with this renewal focus, he recently extended his board certification in ophthalmology through 2035. “I will continue helping patients dealing with complex cornea disease or infection, as well as those seeking second opinions on challenging vision conditions,” he said.
A commitment to medicine
Born in Cuba, Alfonso grew up in Puerto Rico, where he attended a Jesuit high school that encouraged his intellectual curiosity. “I could have joined the family business, but I wanted to go to college and explore a potential career in psychology or neuroscience,” he said. As a junior at Yale College, Alfonso was encouraged to apply to medical school, and was accepted into Yale Medical School after receiving his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. But Alfonso delayed entry for a year, so he could conduct a study on the availability of behavioral care for the community’s Latin population. The study also gave him an opportunity to build administrative and community outreach skills. He also married his high school sweetheart, Molly. After 50 years of marriage, the Alfonsos have three children, two sons-in-law, and five grandchildren.
As a medical student at Yale, Alfonso chose a career in ophthalmology, with encouragement from his mentor, Caleb Gonzalez, M.D., a professor of pediatric ophthalmology. “I fell in love with the field, and decided on a career in academic medicine,” he said. “For my residency, I applied to several schools in the Northeast, as well as Bascom Palmer.”

Norton, M.D., and longtime colleague professor Victor Curtin, M.D., “They were amazing recruiters, and when I went back to the Northeast, I told Molly I wanted to come to Bascom Palmer,” he said. “But I also told her that we would go back after my three-year residency.” After completing his residency in 1984, Alfonso returned to Boston and completed fellowships in clinical and surgical corneal specialties at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary; ophthalmic pathology at the David G. Cogan Eye Pathology Laboratory; and research at the Howe Laboratory, all affiliated with Harvard University.
“Dr. Norton then invited Molly and me to join him for breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton in Boston on a snowy February morning. He asked if I would consider joining Bascom Palmer as a faculty member for a couple of years, and I said yes. We moved here in 1986, fell in love with the community, Bascom Palmer, and the University of Miami, and it has been my home for 40 years.
Initially hired as an assistant professor, Alfonso became a tenured professor and the Edward W.D. Norton Distinguished Chair in 1998. A specialist in corneal diseases and ocular microbiology, he garnered world-wide attention in 2004 when he played a key role in determining that a fungal infection outbreak was associated with a contact lens solution, leading the manufacturer to withdraw its product. Through the years, Alfonso has performed more than 1,000 corneal surgeries in adults and children, and developed the surgical and clinical applications of keratoprosthesis, an artificial cornea.
“It has been one of the great privileges of my career to have trained under Dr. Alfonso, beginning as his fellow in 1993,” writes Carol L. Karp, M.D., the Richard K. Forster Chair in Ophthalmology, and the Dr. Ronald and Alicia Lepke Endowed Professor in Corneal and External Diseases.
“He was a masterful surgeon – his corneal transplant sutures were as elegant as
they were precise, a skill he joked about with the sign in his office that read, “If only my wife knew how well I can sew.” As a young faculty member, I often sought his clinical, academic, and personal counsel and he gave it generously. An accomplished academician and gifted speaker, he unfailingly recognized the contribution of his mentees. He truly embodies the values of Dr. Edward Norton –integrity, excellence, and devotion to mentorship and faculty growth.”
Global leadership
“Dr. Norton had a global vision and built collaborative ties with other clinicians and researchers around the world,” Alfonso said. “In my first year on the faculty, he encouraged me to travel to Spain to present a research paper at a European ophthalmology conference. He also saw Bascom Palmer as a vital resource for helping patients from throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.”
Today, the Institute’s research portfolio represents more than $67 million in sponsored research funding dedicated to clinical and laboratory science programs, supported by federal and state grants alongside generous philanthropic donations. In addition, Bascom Palmer’s medical education program trains ophthalmology residents, fellows, researchers, medical students, and clinical observers from throughout the United States and around the world.

Dr. Alfonso’s impact in ophthalmology has been remarkable. At Bascom Palmer, he has built an outstanding academic department that connects scientists and clinicians in areas such as immunology, infectious disease, computer science, regenerative medicine, and neuroscience. In the South Florida community he has helped develop screening and telehealth programs to expand access to eye care. And on a national level, he consistently provided thoughtful advice to guide strategic initiatives as a member of the National Eye Institute Council.”

Alfonso has also fostered the Institute’s growth in South Florida, serving as medical director of its ophthalmic clinical facilities, which include the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, the Anne Bates Leach Eye Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital and Health System, the Veterans Administration Hospitals, and Bascom Palmer’s outpatient facilities in Palm Beach Gardens, Plantation, Naples, Coral Gables, and North Miami.
This year, Bascom Palmer was again named the nation’s #1 eye hospital by U.S. News & World Report, achieving the top position for the 24th time. The Institute repeatedly received the top eye hospital ranking and the top clinical care program ranking by Ophthalmology Times; and the ophthalmology residency program is continually recognized as the best in the country by Doximity. “Dr. Alfonso’s brilliance is in maintaining Bascom Palmer’s number one ranking all these years”, said Donna Shalala, former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services and former president of the University of Miami. “To do so, he had to recruit the next generation of extraordinary physicians.”
Overcoming challenges
Bascom Palmer has also faced challenges throughout Alfonso’s tenure.
“Academic health centers have not been spared from strong financial headwinds on their clinical and research programs,” Alfonso said. “The U.S. recession of 2009 had a serious impact on our funding. We must continually invest in our staffing, equipment, and services to accommodate South Florida’s enormous population growth.”
In 2020, Bascom Palmer, like healthcare institutions around the world, faced a crisis: how to deliver patient services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Institute quickly implemented telehealth services to connect with patients and families at home, while instituting new emergency care precautions to protect patients, physicians, and staff members.

spurred innovative thinking and research, which now encompasses artificial intelligence applications and cloud-based solutions that can deliver specialized vision care virtually anywhere in the world.”

Reflecting on his tenure as director, Alfonso looks to the future with confidence. “Bascom Palmer’s first generation of faculty members did an outstanding job in establishing a positive, patientcentered culture,” he said. “That has been the foundation for Bascom Palmer’s growth, allowing us to attract world-class researchers, clinicians, and educators for more than 60 years.”
Academic healthcare institutions like Bascom Palmer contribute to society in many ways, he added. “Our clinical and scientific research – along with commercial spinoffs from our faculty –hold the promise of powerful advancements in ophthalmology. “Bascom Palmer will continue to serve as a beacon of hope, transforming lives through excellent vision care for patients and families from all walks of life.”

As professor and director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Alfonso received worldwide recognition for his stellar career. He has received numerous awards, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Honor Award, Senior Achievement Award, Life Achievement Honor Award, and Special Recognition Award. He was honored with the 2020 Claes Dohlman Award by the Cornea Society and Eye Bank Association of America; the Pan American Ophthalmological Foundation Ambassador for Education Award; and the Heed-Gutman Award from the Society of Heed Fellows.
South Florida Business Journal presented him with the CEO of the Year Award and named him one of the 100 most influential leaders in South Florida. He was honored with the Florida Society of Ophthalmology Leadership Award, and the Medical Faculty Award by ORBIS International. Alfonso was inducted into the American Ophthalmological Society, the University of Miami Iron Arrow Society, the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationale, Alpha Omega Alpha, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Order of St John.
Florida Trend has included him in their list of most influential leaders each year since 2018. He has been included in Best Doctors in America by Woodward/White since 1994, Top Doctors in the United States by Castle Connolly since 2000, and named to The Ophthalmologist Power List in 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, and 2023, which names the world’s 100 most influential people in ophthalmology.
Alfonso has served as director and president of the Miami Ophthalmological Society, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Alumni Association, Sociedad Iberoamericana de Cornea y Cirugia Refractiva, Cuban Ophthalmological Society in Exile, Ophthalmology Research Foundation, Ocular Microbiology and Immunology Group, Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, Heed Ophthalmic Foundation, and Pan American Association of Ophthalmology.
He has served or serves on the board of directors of the Society of Heed Fellows, Cornea Society, International Council of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Foundation, Florida Society of Ophthalmology, and the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research.
Alfonso has also served on scientific boards for industry, National Eye Institute, Hope for Vision, Alcon Research Institute, and Research to Prevent Blindness. He was appointed by the Secretary of Health & Human Services to serve on the National Institute of Health’s National Advisory Eye Council, a prestigious panel of leading scientists that advises the National Eye Institute.

How Dr. Philip Rosenfeld’s breakthrough changed AMD treatment worldwide

Two decades ago, Philip J. Rosenfeld, M.D., Ph.D., made a remarkable discovery for patients going blind from wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Studying potential therapies for his patients, Rosenfeld, professor of ophthalmology and an experienced retinal specialist, realized that Avastin®, a drug used to treat colon cancer, might help preserve vision in patients with the aggressive “wet” form of AMD. He began by treating a group of brave AMD patients in a clinical trial using off-label intravenous systemic Avastin and he had great success. He then found that tiny injections of Avastin into the eye were as effective as intravenous infusions in stopping retinal blood vessels from leaking into the macula and damaging the central photoreceptor cells. He prevented blindness in these patients
The results of Rosenfeld’s groundbreaking observations were remarkable. Along with halting the progression of wet AMD in many patients, they reported significant vision improvements just a few days or weeks after treatment. Today, ophthalmologists around the world continue to use Avastin, a relatively low-cost medication, to treat wet AMD patients.
“When we first reported our findings to members of the American Society of Retinal Specialists in July 2005, there was no successful treatment for wet AMD, and patients were sentenced to blindness,” Rosenfeld said. “Now, there are several highly effective and expensive treatments for halting vision loss, but Avastin continues to be the most cost-effective treatment that is used all over the world.”
Since his Avastin discovery, Rosenfeld has been tackling another challenge: how to prevent or slow vision loss from the “dry” form of AMD. In AMD, only about 15% of patients develop the wet form of the disease. However, all patients with AMD, even the ones successfully treated for wet AMD, go on to lose vision from dry AMD. Through the years, he has made steady progress in that quest, but hopes for another breakthrough therapy in the not-toodistant future.
The breakthrough that changed AMD treatment worldwide
When Rosenfeld began studying this retinal disease at Bascom Palmer in the 1990s, the only treatments for wet AMD were laser
photocoagulation and photodynamic therapy, which didn’t improve vision and might temporarily slow, but didn’t stop, the nearterm progression to blindness. Looking for new treatments to preserve vision in his AMD patients, Rosenfeld began testing drugs that blocked the action of the body’s vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein that promotes the growth of abnormal blood vessels in different organs. He felt that the anti-VEGF therapies used to fight cancer could also be effective in battling AMD and other diseases of the retina.
One of the first anti-VEGF drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating wet AMD was Lucentis™, manufactured by biomedical giant Genentech. Rosenfeld was a lead investigator in the early trials with Lucentis and noticed that Avastin, also made by Genentech, was molecularly very similar to Lucentis, although the Avastin molecule was larger.
Genentech claimed that they had begun work on Lucentis in the late 1990s after their internal research suggested that Avastin, when injected into the eye, could not penetrate the retina to reach the abnormal blood vessels under the macula. However, Rosenfeld noted that the study never used Avastin but tested a breast cancer drug known as Herceptin. “I felt that if Lucentis was helping patients with macular degeneration, then Avastin should also work,” he said at the time. “I predicted that the Avastin results would be similar to the Lucentis results, and I was right.”
When diagnostic optical coherence tomography (OCT) testing was performed on Rosenfeld’s patients with wet AMD before and after treatment with Avastin, it showed convincing, positive changes in the anatomy of the macula after injections. In fact, the changes were so dramatic that the vision in many wet AMD patients improved. “That gave us confidence that Avastin, like Lucentis, was working quickly to eliminate the fluid and stop the leakage from these abnormal blood vessels, a finding that was later correlated with improvement in vision,” Rosenfeld said.
However, Rosenfeld faced significant pushback at the time – especially since each injection of Avastin was only a small fraction of the cost of a Lucentis treatment. He even went to Washington in 2011 to testify on the effectiveness of Avastin, after presenting his research findings at numerous international conferences since 2005.

Why his work continues
Since helping to develop effective treatments for wet AMD, Rosenfeld has shifted his research priorities to focus on dry AMD. This slowerprogressing form of the disease affects about 18.5 million Americans, while about 1.5 million have the late-stage wet AMD, according to the Prevent Blindness organization.
“AMD is the most common form of irreversible blindness and vision impairment worldwide among people age 50 and older,” said Rosenfeld. “If you have a family history of AMD, you should have a vision specialist check your macula on a regular basis after the age of 50. If you are diagnosed with AMD, then regular checkups are particularly important to determine how slowly or quickly it is progressing.”
Patients who have been diagnosed with intermediate or advanced dry AMD can benefit from a healthy diet, supplemented by a vitamin formula developed through the landmark AgeRelated Eye Disease Studies (AREDS and AREDS2), and recommended by the National Institutes of Health, Rosenfeld added.
As a clinical investigator, Rosenfeld understands that AMD is a multifactorial disease, driven by genetics and the environment. “Our strategy is to identify patients at high risk for progression and start treating them at an early stage of the disease before they begin to lose a significant amount of their central vision.”
Rosenfeld has been instrumental in developing clinical uses for OCT imaging, and he has helped develop numerous novel algorithms for the diagnosis and management of AMD and other retinal diseases. He has also developed novel clinical trial endpoints that are currently being used to test new therapies for dry AMD. “Twenty years ago, we used time-domain OCT, which was effective in evaluating wet AMD, but not very useful for dry AMD,” he added. “Now, we can use these advanced OCT imaging techniques to predict who will lose vision, so we can begin treatments earlier.”
Once a patient has been identified with AMD, the disease progression can be studied over time. Rosenfeld has led the Institute’s participation in the national IMPACT/SWAGGER studies, and the Bascom Palmer database now includes more than 9,000 AMD patients. “Using OCT we have been able to identify biomarkers that put some dry AMD patients at high risk of progression,” he said. “This work has also helped us design a clinical trial endpoint, accepted by the FDA, that could result in the approval of new therapies to preserve vision in patients with an intermediate stage of AMD before vision is lost.”
In his research on dry AMD, Rosenfeld has played a pivotal role in the development of Syfovre®, which slows the progression of geographic atrophy, an advanced condition that leads to legal blindness. Approved by the FDA in 2023, this is the first effective therapy for slowing the progressive vision loss in dry AMD patients with geographic atrophy, according to Rosenfeld. However, therapy requires years of monthly or bimonthly injections in most patients. “One of our goals is to develop oral, subcutaneous, or infusion therapies for these patients. Almost everyone would prefer taking a pill to getting an injection into their eye.”
Meanwhile, Rosenfeld is exploring other approaches to treating dry AMD. “Artificial intelligence is already making a great contribution to algorithm development and clinical care, assisting retinal specialists in determining the nature and timing of appropriate treatment,” he said. However, the next great breakthrough in therapy for AMD will rely on human intelligence and hard-work, and we are close, very close.” n
The Future is in Focus
The MVSIO Program’s First Decade is Redefining What is Possible in Ophthalmology
When Sanjoy K. Bhattacharya, Ph.D., founded the Master of Science in Vision Science and Investigative Ophthalmology (MVSIO) program at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in 2016, he had a bold and singular vision: to create a graduate program unlike anything the world had seen before. A decade later, that vision has become a landmark achievement in ophthalmic education and Bhattacharya could not be more proud of what it has become.
“We built this program from the ground up because we saw a real gap,” says Bhattacharya, who serves as the program’s founding director and a professor of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer. “The field needed professionals who could think like scientists, lead like executives, and care like clinicians. The MVSIO was designed to produce exactly that kind of person.”
A Pioneer in Ophthalmic Education
When it launched, the MVSIO was not merely new, it was unprecedented. No other graduate program in the world offered this specific combination of rigorous laboratory training, ophthalmic clinical exposure, problem-based learning, and management education within a two-year master’s framework focused entirely on vision science. That distinction still holds true today.
The program was built on the teaching philosophy Bhattacharya has championed throughout his career: instill strong fundamentals first, then build on them logically. A trained biochemist and molecular biologist himself, he earned master’s degrees in biotechnology and bioengineering from Banaras Hindu University and his Ph.D. in bioengineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, India. He went on to complete fellowships in pharmacology and structural biology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation before joining Bascom Palmer. It was a career defined by crossing disciplines, and the MVSIO reflects that same spirit.
Where Science Meets Leadership
At its core, the MVSIO is a science program. Students immerse themselves in the fundamental disciplines of electrophysiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, while also gaining handson laboratory experience in microbiology and pathology as applied to ophthalmology. They study the anatomy and physiology of the eye, cellular mechanisms and ophthalmic genetics, vision, optics, and molecular ophthalmology, a curriculum carefully designed to prepare them for doctoral work or careers in vision research.
But what sets the MVSIO apart, what has always set it apart, is what it places alongside that science. From its earliest days, the program has integrated problem-based learning modules that challenge students to grapple with real-world issues in genomics, lipidomics, proteomics, and regenerative medicine. These modules, taught by Bascom Palmer’s world-class faculty and distinguished guest lecturers from academia and industry, ask students not just to absorb knowledge, but to apply it creatively and critically. Equally distinctive is the program’s commitment to developing the whole professional. Students learn grant writing, business plan formulation, research management, and the fundamentals of mergers and acquisitions. Over the past ten years, the MVSIO has welcomed a vibrant and diverse community of students: medical school graduates preparing for ophthalmology residency; clinicians from around the world looking to deepen their research skills; science graduates eager to expand their horizons; college graduates strengthening their foundation before medical school; and industry professionals seeking a deeper understanding of the science they work with every day. Each year, up to ten students are admitted through a rigorous selection process that weighs academic excellence, leadership potential, personal experience, and future promise.
The program draws on the full strength of the University of Miami, with courses taught by faculty from the Miller School of Medicine, the School of Business Administration, and the College of Arts and Sciences. In the second year, students complete a thesis under the mentorship of a Bascom Palmer faculty member, transforming the scientific knowledge they have built into an original contribution to the field.
Ten Years of Impact
As the MVSIO marks its tenth anniversary, its impact can be measured in many ways: in the researchers who have gone on to Ph.D. programs and academic careers, in the entrepreneurs who have launched companies in the growing vision care industry and in the regulatory and policy professionals who are shaping the future of eye health from positions of influence. Each of them carries the foundation that Bhattacharya and his colleagues built.
For Bhattacharya, the anniversary is both a moment of celebration and a renewed sense of purpose. The program he envisioned a decade ago has proven that the world needed exactly what Bascom Palmer created: a place where the science of sight and the science of leadership come together, where the next generation of visionary minds are trained to see not just what is, but what is possible. The MVSIO’s first ten years are only the beginning. The future of vision science and the professionals who will shape it is bright. n

Steven J. Gedde, M.D. A Legacy of Leadership Celebrating Historic Achievements
In a remarkable testament to excellence in ophthalmology, Steven J. Gedde, M.D., has reached a pinnacle that few in the field ever attain: simultaneous leadership of two of the most prestigious organizations in American ophthalmology. His recent installation as President of the American Glaucoma Society and selection as the next Chief Executive Officer of the American Board of Ophthalmology marks not only a personal milestone, but a proud moment for Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
These appointments recognize what ophthalmologists at Bascom Palmer and around the world have long known: Gedde, professor and holder of the John G. Clarkson Chair in Ophthalmology, executive vice chair, and vice chair of education, is an exceptional physician, educator, and leader whose influence extends far beyond the Institute’s walls.
As Bascom Palmer’s vice chair of education, he has been the architect and guardian of its renowned training programs, shaping the next
generation of ophthalmologists through its highly regarded residency programs and the Global Center for Ophthalmic Education, while conducting important research to improve patient care through clinical trials and caring for glaucoma patients.
“His mentorship has touched countless careers, and his commitment to educational excellence has helped cement Bascom Palmer’s position as a global leader in ophthalmic education,” said Chris R. Alabiad, M.D., professor of clinical ophthalmology, the Brand Butcher Youngdahl Chair in Ophthalmology, and Bascom Palmer’s ophthalmology residency program director.
“Dr. Gedde has been a true leader in his time at Bascom Palmer,” said Eduardo Alfonso, M.D., director and chair of Bascom Palmer and the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Endowed Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “His research has redefined glaucoma care, opening up new options for patients while also serving as director of one of the top ophthalmology residency programs in the nation. Both the American Glaucoma Society and the American Board of Ophthalmology will benefit greatly from his leadership.”
A Commitment to Excellence in Patient Care
“As an ophthalmologist, I am driven to deliver high-quality care that preserves and restores vision. Excellence in care extends beyond accurate diagnosis and effective treatment,” Gedde said. “Physicians must also communicate clearly with patients and their families, coordinate care within an increasingly complex health care system to optimize outcomes while controlling costs, uphold the highest standards of ethical and patientcentered practice, and continuously improve through self-assessment and lifelong learning. Similarly, my research pursuits have been centered around enhancing the diagnosis and management of patients with glaucoma.”
Those pursuits have led to more than 400 articles, book chapters, and abstracts. Gedde chaired the “Tube Versus Trabeculectomy Study” that showed tube shunts, which customarily were reserved for high-risk refractory glaucoma, should have expanded indications. He also helmed the “Primary Tube Versus Trabeculectomy Study” that

Shaping the Next Generation “I was given the opportunity to support our residents at a formative stage in their careers and build a program fostering a culture of excellence and lifelong learning,” Gedde said. “Helping residents develop their clinical and surgical skills challenges my depth of understanding, and I’m constantly learning alongside my students by refining my perspective through their insights and curiosity.”
Among his many accolades, Gedde has received the Excellence in Health Care Educator of the Year award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education, and the Senior Faculty Educator of the Year Award from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
A distinguished record of leadership nationally, Gedde has served as president of the Program Director Council and a member of the Match Oversight Committee for the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, chair of the Glaucoma Preferred Practice Pattern Committee for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and chair of AGS’s Education and Communication Committee. He has been honored with Secretariat Awards and a Life Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the AGS Lecture and the President’s Award from the American Glaucoma Society, and the Boberg-Ans Prize from the Danish Ophthalmological Society. He was named to the Ophthalmologist Power List in 2022 and 2024.

Leading the Future of Board Certification
Gedde will assume the role of CEO of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) in January 2027. The ABO is an independent nonprofit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists (eye physicians and surgeons) in the United States. To earn the distinction of board certification, ophthalmologists voluntarily demonstrate the broad knowledge and clinical judgment needed to care for both common and complex eye and vision conditions.
The leadership of the ABO is typically overseen by a chief executive officer, a role historically referred to as executive director. John G. Clarkson, M.D., professor emeritus of ophthalmology and Bascom Palmer’s second chair, served as executive director of the ABO for ten years before retiring at the end of 2016.
“Throughout my career, I have been privileged to witness how education transforms not only individual practitioners but entire communities of patients who benefit from their care,” Gedde said. “These leadership roles represent an opportunity to expand that impact, to elevate standards across our profession, and ensure that every ophthalmologist has the support and resources needed to provide exceptional, patient-centered care for generations to come.” n

Dr. Jean-Marie Parel Pioneer of Ophthalmic Surgery
Jean-Marie Parel, Ing., ETS-G, Ph.D., a pioneering biomedical engineer and visionary inventor whose groundbreaking work transformed ophthalmic surgery and patient care, passed away August 10, 2025 in Miami, Florida, at the age of 82. Over his extraordinary 60-year career, he invented or improved 350 medical instruments and left an indelible mark on medicine worldwide as the Henri & Flore Lesieur Chair in Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
“Jean-Marie Parel’s 60-year dedication to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the field of ophthalmology was unparalleled,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., director of Bascom Palmer. “The week before he died, he was actively working alongside his research team, embodying the passion and
commitment that defined his remarkable career with Bascom Palmer and the University. His legacy extends far beyond his scientific achievements. He was a mentor, collaborator, and dear friend who touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
Early Life and Education
Born in Switzerland in 1943 during the turmoil of World War II, Parel faced early adversity, including a childhood bout with polio. His mother, recognizing his physical limitations, nurtured his intellectual curiosity by teaching him to read, write, and speak French. A medical dictionary captured his young imagination, sparking a lifelong passion for science and healing.
He pursued an exceptional academic path, earning degrees in physics, applied mathematics, and electronic engineering, followed by a master’s degree in biophysics from Bern University. His trajectory toward ophthalmology was shaped by a professor who introduced him to the fascinating field of ophthalmic optics.
A Partnership That Changed Medicine
In 1969, Parel was recruited to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute by Dr. Edward W.D. Norton, the Institute’s founding chair. The following year, they established the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center (OBC), creating a pioneering hub for translational research and innovation in ophthalmology. This collaboration launched Parel on a remarkable lifetime journey.
“Dr. Norton had a view of the future so farreaching it was unbelievable,” Parel said. “He recognized how biophysical engineering could make a huge difference in ophthalmology.”
Revolutionary Innovation in Retinal Surgery
A pivotal moment in Parel’s career occurred shortly before he arrived in Miami, when he met Robert Machemer, M.D., a retinal specialist practicing at Bascom Palmer. At the time, Parel was developing motorized microsurgical instruments in Melbourne, Australia. This fortuitous meeting led Norton to recruit Parel to Bascom Palmer.
Their collaboration, along with Helmut Buettner, Ph.D., resulted in the vitreous infusion suction cutter (VISC), a groundbreaking device that could be introduced through the pars plana to aspirate, cut, and remove diseased vitreous while maintaining the eye’s shape through continuous saline infusion. “It provided the foundation for doing intraocular microsurgery while preventing the collapse of the eye,” Parel explained.
This innovation became fundamental to modern retinal surgery, and Machemer would later become known as the “father of retinal surgery.” But characteristically, Parel thought beyond the invention itself. “Responding to the massive demand for the VISC and the vitrectomy instruments we designed, Bascom Palmer launched a global training program,” Parel said. “We knew every patient could not come to us for surgery, so we trained the top ophthalmologists around the world so they could do the procedures in their own countries.”
Decades of Innovation
Throughout the 1970s, biomedical research and development flourished at Bascom Palmer under Parel’s leadership. He developed the first modern programmable eye for a patient mannequin,
complete with features like a sensor that would close the iris in response to light. “We were able to mimic conditions like retinopathy of prematurity,” Parel said. “A student could recreate an intravenous injection and use fluorescein angiography to see the changes in real-time.”
In the 1980s, Parel’s team designed the world’s smallest motorized scissors, used to cut retinal membranes that obscure vision. He also worked closely with John G. Clarkson, M.D., in developing a next-generation fluid control system that improved surgical precision in vitrectomies.
Clarkson, dean emeritus of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and former chair of Bascom Palmer, said, “Jean-Marie was an inventor without peer and as dedicated to his work and Bascom Palmer as anyone who served our Institute. His tireless effort to develop instruments for saving and restoring sight is unparalleled. Jean-Marie was not only a brilliant inventor but also a generous collaborator. His work has touched millions, and his spirit of curiosity and compassion will live on in every device he helped create. He cannot be replaced.”
When asked early in his career about his extraordinary success, Parel humbly responded, “I simply did what three professors on three continents asked me to do: help clinicians improve patient care. It was logical to listen to their needs and to teach my team to do the same.” Working with scientists and engineers, he and his team solved challenges presented by physicians and surgeons, always with the same goal of improving patient care.

A Legacy of Innovation
Parel closely collaborated with Fabrice Manns, Ph.D., chair of the University of Miami College of Engineering Department of Biomedical Engineering and co-director of the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center, as well as Marco Ruggeri, Ph.D., research associate professor of ophthalmology, and every other scientist at Bascom Palmer who needed technology support. In return, these gifted scientists helped the OBC by sharing their knowledge and practical expertise that ultimately benefited patient care. Among Parel’s celebrated contributions are the glaucoma microshunt, half the size of an eyelash; retinal tacks for reattaching the retina; the silicone oil drug delivery system; an optical fiber laser for welding ocular tissues; the coulomb-controlled iontophoresis system for non-invasive drug delivery; and a spectrally adjustable ocular photosensitivity analyzer.
Mentorship and Influence
Parel was a beloved mentor to many, from high school students to postdoctoral researchers, always emphasizing the principle instilled by Dr. Norton: “Patient first, your family second, and you last.”
Parel once said, “It makes me happy to see young students and clinicians with a big smile on their faces when they solve a patient’s problem. That is a wonderful gift.”
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parel and the OBC team developed a web-controlled robotized slit-lamp useful for remote patient examinations, now especially valuable in underserved regions globally. He also worked with Guillermo Amescua, M.D., in the development of synthetic corneas, a visionary project creating polymeric implants that mimic the natural cornea, addressing the global shortage of donor tissue.
Honors and Recognition
Parel received numerous accolades from national and international organizations. His awards include the Gold Medal from the International Congress of Ophthalmology, the Prince Philip Prize for Australian Scientific Design, the Relja Award from the European Vitreoretinal Society, and membership in the Iron Arrow Honor Society, the highest attainable award from the University of Miami. He was a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and a longtime member of the Phi Beta Delta International Scholars Honor Society, the Retina Society, and Club Jules Gonin.
Personal Life and Legacy
Parel was married to his beloved wife Marilyn for 42 years. She was a constant presence and support throughout his career.
His legacy lives on through the countless patients whose sight was saved or restored by the instruments and techniques he pioneered, and through the generations of ophthalmologists who continue to benefit from his visionary contributions to the field. Jean-Marie Parel’s inventions reflect his deep commitment to translational research and his ability to bridge engineering with clinical needs, forever changing the landscape of ophthalmic care and touching millions of lives worldwide. n

Dr. Vittorio Porciatti: Vision Science Excellence
Vittorio Porciatti, D.Sc., an internationally recognized leader in visual neuroscience, is retiring after 25 years at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Throughout his distinguished tenure, Porciatti has served as the James L. Knight Professor of Ophthalmology; vice chair; director of scientific research; and research professor of ophthalmology, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. “It has been an honor to contribute to our Institute’s research, education, and clinical teams,” said Porciatti. “I look forward to continue serving our Institute as professor emeritus, while spending more time with family in my native Italy.”
Research Excellence and Innovation
Since joining Bascom Palmer in 2001, Porciatti’s research has focused on the prevention and restoration of vision in glaucoma and other optic nerve diseases, such as Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), a genetic condition which leads to sudden loss of central vision. Generating more than $20 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, his groundbreaking work has centered on early detection and intervention strategies to prevent irreversible vision loss.
“Detecting retinal ganglion cell dysfunction in the early stages is vital to delivering timely treatment to prevent cellular death that leads to blindness,” Porciatti explained. He pioneered and developed electrophysiology tools to assess the function of retinal ganglion cells, as well as the use of stem cells for retinal organoid platforms
Impact and Recognition
Porciatti’s findings have appeared in more than 200 publications and have been cited more than 15,000 times, demonstrating the profound impact of his work on the field of visual neuroscience. His contributions have been recognized through numerous prestigious honors, including being named Cavaliere della Stella d’Italia (Knight of the Star of Italy) by Italy’s President. He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and is a Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology
Leadership and Mentorship
As director of research, Porciatti has been instrumental in fostering collaborative research initiatives and supporting the development of research programs across the Institute. “From its earliest days, our Institute has been committed to leadership in vision research,” Porciatti said. “I
have enjoyed helping our scientists and clinicians develop their research programs in collaboration with outstanding researchers throughout the U.S. and around the world. I am confident that tradition will continue through Bascom Palmer’s highly regarded residency and fellowship programs.”
Porciatti received his bachelor of science degree in biological sciences and doctorate from the University of Pisa, Italy. Prior to joining Bascom Palmer, he served as senior scientist at the Institute of Neurophysiology at the Italian Research Council in Pisa.
Porciatti will continue his association with Bascom Palmer as professor emeritus, ensuring that his expertise and insights remain available to the Institute’s research community. “We are grateful that Dr. Porciatti will continue to be an important intellectual contributor to our Institute,” said Belinda Quinta, administrator of ophthalmology operations and research; and senior director of sponsored programs in research administration. “He has been and will continue to be a deeply valued mentor to our trainees and faculty members.” n

“The opening of Bascom Palmer Abu Dhabi is deeply gratifying and further cements Bascom Palmer’s place at the top of global ophthalmic care,” Alfonso said. Located in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, the 70,000-square-foot ambulatory care center, designed by Gresham Smith, features a distinctive gemstone-inspired facade of faceted silver glass. The design symbolizes the eye’s precious qualities while creating a landmark that “shines all day long.”
“Our mission in Abu Dhabi is simple: to bring Bascom Palmer’s gold-standard ophthalmic care to the heart of the UAE,” said David T. Tse, M.D., a professor of ophthalmology and the Nasser Ibrahim AlRashid Chair in Ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer. Tse serves as the chief medical officer for Bascom Palmer Abu Dhabi.
Bascom Palmer Abu Dhabi is currently staffed by three full-time specialists in retinal and vitreous diseases, glaucoma, corneal and external diseases, and cataracts. These doctors will be supported by a rotating team of visiting specialists from Bascom Palmer’s Florida locations. NICOLA GEORGE GHAZI, M.D., specializes in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. He previously served as a consultant at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and clinical professor of ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He will serve as medical director of Bascom Palmer Abu Dhabi.
GEORGE F. CORRENT, M.D., PH.D., a specialist in corneal diseases, cataract surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmology, completed his fellowship in corneal and external diseases at Bascom Palmer. He served as chair of the department of ophthalmology at Cleveland Clinic Florida from 1988 to 2005 and practiced at Bascom Palmer Naples from 2009 to 2015.
JASON GOLDSMITH, M.D., M.S., a glaucoma surgeon, previously served as a consultant surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He was an associate professor at the Moran Eye Center, University of Utah, and chief of ophthalmology at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he cared for U.S. military veterans while actively participating in resident education and surgical training.

A Gifted Physician, Researcher, and Humanitarian Returns to Bascom Palmer
Nationally recognized for his clinical, research, and humanitarian services, Donald L. Budenz, M.D., M.P.H., has returned to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where he will lead the vision team at UHealth’s new SoLé Mia facility in North Miami.
“Dr. Budenz brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, particularly in his specialty of glaucoma, and we are thrilled to have him back on board,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., Bascom Palmer director. “After 14 years as chair of ophthalmology at the University of North Carolina, he is returning home to Bascom Palmer.”
As the medical director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute SoLé Mia, Budenz will oversee clinical operations, while seeing glaucoma and cataract patients, providing consultations to community ophthalmologists, and continuing his wide-ranging research. “I am thrilled to be back at Bascom Palmer and look forward to contributing to the tripartite mission of the department and school,” he said. “I have never felt more welcomed by faculty and staff and look forward to working with old friends and colleagues as well as meeting new ones.”
Budenz said the Institute’s SoLé Mia team includes both ophthalmologists and optometrists, providing care to patients throughout northern Miami-Dade County. “We have all adult vision specialties at SoLé Mia, and can offer excellent specialty and surgical care from Bascom Palmer’s renowned faculty members at a very convenient location.”
A Leader in the Field
Throughout his career, Budenz has shaped the direction of ophthalmology through prominent leadership positions. He has served as president of both the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society. His editorial contributions are equally impressive. He serves as an editorial reviewer for numerous medical journals, associate editor of the
American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Glaucoma, and editor and chief of the glaucoma section of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology. He has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor each year since 2007 and a Best Doctor in America for more than 22 years.
In 2011 he was recruited as chair of the department of ophthalmology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and held the Kittner Family Distinguished Professorship for 14 years.
Landmark Glaucoma Studies
As principal investigator, Budenz has led several landmark glaucoma clinical trials that have advanced the field, including the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study, the Tube versus Trabeculectomy Study, and the Ahmed Baerveldt Comparison Study.
While at North Carolina, he collaborated with Steven J. Gedde, M.D., Bascom Palmer professor of ophthalmology and vice chair of education on the “Glaucoma Drainage Device and Endothelial Cell Loss Compare Trial (DECLARE), a multicenter clinical trial.
Budenz’s scholarly output is extensive: two textbooks (Atlas of Visual Fields and Atlas of Optical Coherence Tomography for Glaucoma), numerous book chapters, and nearly 300 peer-reviewed journal articles. His research interests include diagnostic procedures in glaucoma, glaucoma surgical outcomes, and epidemiology of glaucoma. As a result of his research, he was honored as the American Glaucoma Society’s annual Clinician Scientist Lecturer in 2018.
A True Humanitarian
Budenz’s commitment to improving vision extends far beyond the university setting. For 30 years, he has served as a volunteer surgeon for the Christian Eye Ministry, working to improve eye care across Africa. In Ghana, West Africa, he has seen thousands of patients and performed hundreds of surgeries, including modern cataract surgery with intraocular lenses, glaucoma surgery with anti-metabolites, and glaucoma drainage implant surgery, bringing the gift of sight to countless patients who might otherwise have remained blind. Currently, Budenz is working with the Christian Ophthalmic Surgery Expedition Network (CHOSEN), as well as the Christian Eye Ministry, to open a charitable eye hospital in Ghana’s capital of Accra. “With this facility, we hope to have a bigger impact, serving hundreds of retina, cataract and glaucoma
patients every week at no cost to them,” he said. “We also plan to bring ophthalmology residents and fellows on our volunteer trips to Ghana, so they can observe our activities and be inspired to do similar work in the future.”
For his charitable work in Ghana, Budenz has received Humanitarian of the Year awards from the American Glaucoma Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
A Remarkable Journey
Budenz’s journey in ophthalmology began with academic distinction. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania before earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, he came to Bascom Palmer for his glaucoma fellowship, where he was awarded the prestigious Heed Fellowship, one of the highest honors for postgraduate fellows in ophthalmology.
Budenz first joined the Bascom Palmer faculty in 1994 and served with distinction for 17 years. During this time, he deepened his expertise in research methods and public health by earning a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2004. He also served as associate medical director of the Institute’s Anne Bates
Leach Eye Center for 10 years, giving him extensive experience in leading clinical operations.

JENNIFER WEIZER, M.D., a board-certified distinguished glaucoma specialist who joins Bascom Palmer as a clinical professor of ophthalmology and medical director of quality, safety, and outcomes. She graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a degree in economics and inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, while participating in the prestigious Juilliard School/Columbia Joint Program in violin performance. She then earned her doctor of medicine with honors from Baylor College of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She completed both her ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in glaucoma at Duke University Eye Center. In 2005, she joined the Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she built an exceptional twenty-year career. She rose to serve as service chief of the department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, associate chair of faculty affairs, and assistant chair of patient safety and quality improvement. She was honored as a Rudi Ansbacher Advancing Woman in Academic Leadership Scholar. Weizer has authored five books or monographs, contributed 33 peer-reviewed publications, and delivered more than 50 presentations at ophthalmology conferences nationwide. She has been named a “Best Doctor in America” on multiple occasions. Beyond medicine, she is an accomplished violinist who has performed in more than 75 concerts as a soloist and with chamber music and orchestral ensembles. MARK A. KONTOS, M.D.,
a skilled board-certified, cataract, cornea, and refractive surgeon joins Bascom Palmer as a staff physician. He brings a distinguished military career, having served nine years as a flight surgeon and ophthalmologist in the U.S. Navy before dedicating himself to the practice of ophthalmology.
At the University of Colorado Boulder, he earned his bachelor of arts and sciences in molecular, cell, and developmental biology with honors and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He went on to receive his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine, completed his ophthalmology residency at the San Diego Naval Regional Medical Center, and trained as a flight surgeon through a fellowship at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola. He then served nine distinguished years in the U.S. Navy as a flight surgeon and ophthalmologist, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Among the highlights of his service, Kontos spent three years as a member of the legendary Navy Fighter Weapons School, known worldwide as TOPGUN, one of the most elite assignments in the U.S. military.
Following his honorable service, he built a thriving practice in refractive and cataract surgery in the Pacific Northwest. He is an active educator, teaching and lecturing both nationally and internationally, and serves as chief medical editor of The Ophthalmic ASC and Collaborative Eye Magazine. An extremely experienced LASIK and refractive surgeon, he is available to see patients at Bascom Palmer’s new location in North Miami at UHealth SoLé Mia.
MARISSA K. SHOJI, M.D., returns to Bascom Palmer as a specialist in aesthetic and reconstructive oculoplastic surgery who joins the faculty as assistant professor of clinical surgery. Shoji’s expertise and surgical skill encompasses cosmetic eyelid, brow, and facial procedures, as well as complex surgeries for periorbital skin cancer reconstruction, thyroid eye disease, and orbital tumors.
She graduated magna cum laude with highest honors in neurobiology from Harvard College and earned her medical degree with honors from Harvard Medical School. She then completed her ophthalmology residency at Bascom Palmer before completing a fellowship in oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery at the Shiley Eye Institute of the University of California, San Diego. She has been recognized with numerous national and institutional awards spanning innovation, research, teaching, and community service. Among the most prestigious is the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award, one of the highest honors in postgraduate ophthalmology. She is also the recipient of the Real World Ophthalmology Exemplary Teaching Award, the Prevent Blindness Rising Visionary Award, the Lanna Cheng Innovation Award, and the Lee Family Community Service Award.
Shoji serves as a mentor for YoungMD Connect and Women in Ophthalmology, and volunteers regularly at Bascom Palmer’s community health fairs. An accomplished runner, she has been among the top three women finishers in the annual Miami Corporate 5K Run, and helped lead the Bascom Palmer team to first place in the team competition from 2021 through 2023. Shoji sees patients at Bascom Palmer’s new location in North Miami at UHealth SoLé Mia.
SOTIRIA PALIOUA, M.D., M.SC., PH.D., an ophthalmic surgeon and professor of clinical ophthalmology specializing in cornea, cataract, and ocular surface surgery returns to Bascom Palmer, bringing extensive expertise in patient care, advanced surgical training, and international academic leadership. She earned both her bachelor and master of science degrees magna cum laude from Yale University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She subsequently received her MD and PhD degrees from Yale School of Medicine on a full scholarship.
Palioura completed her ophthalmology residency at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, followed by a fellowship in cornea and external diseases at Bascom Palmer. She further advanced her academic training through a postgraduate course in the principles and practice of clinical research at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, she also holds certifications from the Eye Bank Association of America and the European Board of Ophthalmology. She has been elected to the FEBOS-CR Wall of Honor by the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). A dedicated educator, she has taught at institutions including Maimonides University of Buenos Aires and the University of Cyprus Medical School.
Her research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Cornea, The Ocular Surface, American Journal of Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology Science. She is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences, serves on the Cornea, Education and DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) committees of ESCRS, and contributes to advisory panels worldwide. Since 2017, she has volunteered as an ophthalmologist with Doctors Without Borders. Palioura is available for consultations in Miami.
DANIELA G. TEIJELO, M.D., an assistant professor of clinical neurology, joins our faculty as an expert in neurology and neuroophthalmology. She brings her expertise to Bascom Palmer bridging these two specialties to provide comprehensive, specialized care for patients with complex neurologic and visual conditions.
She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida before receiving her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in neurology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital followed by a fellowship in neuroophthalmology at Bascom Palmer.
A board-certified neurologist, Teijelo has developed expertise across both general neurology and neuroophthalmology, allowing her to diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of neurologic conditions alongside diseases of the optic nerve. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. In her clinical practice, she provides comprehensive care to adults whose vision problems range from optic nerve disorders to ocular motility disorders, arise from a wide range of underlying neurologic conditions. Her expertise in both neurology and neuro-ophthalmology is particularly valuable for patients with complex or difficult-to-diagnose conditions. WINSTON LEE, PH.D., joins our faculty as a research assistant professor. He brings extensive scientific training and a focused research vision to establish the Translational Ocular Genomics Laboratory (TOGL) at Bascom Palmer, dedicated to unlocking the genetic and clinical architecture of inherited eye diseases. He employs a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the development of advanced next-generation sequencing analysis pipelines, quantitative retinal imaging platforms, and patient-derived experimental model systems. The TOGL seeks to advance the frontier of genomic medicine beyond traditional single-gene diagnostics. Rather than limiting molecular diagnosis to the identification of a causal variant, his research investigates genetic modifiers and complex non-canonical genomic variation to better understand disease heterogeneity and long-term prognostic outcomes. His research has primarily focused on inherited retinal diseases and has contributed to novel discoveries in disorders caused by pathogenic variation in RHO, ABCA4, GUCA1A, KCNV2, CRB1, NR2E3, RDH11, PRPH2, RS1, RDH12, USH2A, REP1, CNGB1, SPATA7, EYS, PNPLA6, GPR143, CERKL, ROM1, PROM1, CRX, CFAP410, BEST1, HK1, and GUCY2D, among others. His work is supported by the National Institutes of Health/National Eye Institute (K99/R00 Award 1K99EY036930-01) for the project “Structured Quantification of Inherited Macular Disease Phenotypes as the Basis for Automated Algorithms to Determine Causal Genes,” as well as the 2026 Stanley J. Glaser Foundation Research Award. He received his Ph.D. in human molecular genetics from Columbia University in 2023 and recently completed his postdoctoral fellowship in ophthalmic genetics and bioinformatics at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute. He is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and serves on the editorial board of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
SIAMAK YOUSEFI,
M.D., PH.D., a nationally recognized leader in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and computational methods in ophthalmology and vision science, joins the faculty as a research associate professor with joint appointments in the departments of ophthalmology and electrical and computer engineering. He directs the Data Mining and Machine Learning Laboratory, where his team develops state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and large language model–based approaches to advance ocular imaging analysis, electronic health record mining, and clinical decision support.
Yousefi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas focusing on biomedical pattern recognition and image analysis. He pursued postdoctoral training in neural signal processing and vision research at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by a fellowship at the Shiley Eye Institute of the University of California, San Diego, where he later served as a research scientist. He was also an adjunct professor at San Diego State University and a visiting assistant professor at the University of Tokyo. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals including Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, The Ocular Surface, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and IEEE Transactions. His recent work has advanced the application of deep learning and ChatGPT-like models for glaucoma detection, neuro-ophthalmology, and corneal disease diagnosis. Yousefi serves on the editorial board of Translational Vision Science & Technology, is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and is an active member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. His research has been supported by the National lnstitutes of Health/National Eye Institute and private foundations, totaling more than $4 million in competitive funding. Yousefi brings expertise in predictive modeling, big data, and imaging analytics, and will expand AI-driven research across glaucoma, retina, cornea, and other subspecialties.

What if a routine eye exam could reveal hidden threats to your brain?
JIANHUA WANG, M.D., PH.D., is turning that vision into reality by developing a groundbreaking ocular imaging device that uses the eye as a window into cerebrovascular health. For patients, the promise is profound: earlier detection, earlier intervention, and a better chance of preserving cognitive health, all from a scan of the eye.
A professor of ophthalmology and scientific co-director of Bascom Palmer’s Experimental Imaging Laboratory, Wang is at the forefront of oculomics, an emerging field that combines advanced eye imaging with artificial intelligence to detect systemic diseases long before conventional symptoms appear. His research focuses specifically on cerebral small vessel disease, a leading contributor to cognitive impairment and dementia that affects millions of Americans yet often goes undiagnosed until significant damage has occurred.
The device Wang is developing measures capillary blood flow through the retina, the tiny vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to brain tissue. Unlike MRI, which can only detect blood flow in large vessels, his technology captures the microvascular detail that matters most.
“Although cerebral small vessel disease probably does not cause Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, it likely plays a major role by contributing to the acceleration of progression,” Wang said.
This research is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s Venture Program Oculomics Initiative. Wang’s project (OT2OD038131-01) aims to make non-invasive, retinal diagnostics available to all patients during routine eye exams.
Heru Reaches Milestone of One Million Eyes Tested
Bascom Palmer proudly announces a significant achievement in vision testing technology: Heru, the AI-powered wearable headset developed by MOHAMED ABOU SHOUSHA, M.D., PH.D., has surpassed the milestone of testing more than 1.5 million eyes throughout the United States.
This innovative device that is revolutionizing eye care with its unique capabilities was conceived and developed by Abou Shousha and his team at Bascom Palmer’s artificial intelligence and computer augmented vision laboratory. The FDA-registered headset merges artificial intelligence with virtual reality, allowing multiple vision exams to be performed using a single, easy-to-wear device. Clinicians receive instant results from visual acuity tests, pupil response, eye alignment, color vision, and visual field assessments.
Heru is the result of more than ten years of dedicated research and development by physicians, scientists, and engineers at Bascom Palmer. The primary goal is to improve the quality of life for millions of people with visual disorders by offering accessible and precise vision testing. Heru is widely used by eye care professionals throughout the country, recognized for its accuracy and reliability.
A Vision-Saving Breakthrough at Bascom Palmer
A 63-year-old Florida man recently became the first person in the state to receive a groundbreaking implant that uses gene therapy to treat macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel), a rare eye disease causing severe central vision loss that affects about one in 10,000 people.
The surgery was performed by THOMAS A. ALBINI, M.D., professor of clinical ophthalmology and holder of the Robert Z. and Nancy J. Greene Chair. The implant, called Encelto, is the first FDA-approved treatment specifically designed for MacTel, and is expected to slow vision loss by approximately half.
The achievement builds on decades of foundational research at Bascom Palmer. Beginning in the 1990s, RONG WEN, M.D., PH.D., professor of ophthalmology, began studying the role of a protein called ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and found that it promoted the survival of critical retinal cells. Albini then advanced this discovery through more than 15 years of clinical trials, ultimately finding the best results in MacTel patients.
The implant contains lab-engineered cells that continuously release CNTF into the eye, preserving the retinal cells responsible for central vision. Their collaboration exemplifies Bascom Palmer’s strength in ophthalmic research by translating laboratory discoveries into life-changing patient care.

Your Body’s Clock May Hold the Key to Glaucoma Progression
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, affecting more than 100 million people worldwide. A groundbreaking study led by FELIPE A. MEDEIROS, M.D., PH.D., vice chair of research and holder of the Rodgers Research Chair in Ophthalmology, may have uncovered a powerful new way to predict who is most at risk.
Medeiros and his team examined 200 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, comparing those with fast versus slow disease progression. Patients can lose vision from glaucoma even when their intraocular pressure is well-controlled. Using four “epigenetic clocks,” biological aging calculators based on DNA methylation patterns, the team found that patients whose bodies aged faster than their chronological age were significantly more likely to experience rapid vision loss. In patients with normal eye pressure, the Horvath clock showed the strongest link to glaucoma progression, suggesting that biological aging may independently make the optic nerve more vulnerable to damage.
Looking ahead Medeiros’ goal is to develop blood-based biomarkers that identify patients at the highest risk of progression, enabling earlier intervention and therapies that target the aging process itself to help preserve vision.

KENDALL E. DONALDSON, M.D., M.A., professor of clinical ophthalmology and holder of the Rodgers Clark Chair, has recently completed her 175th cataract surgery using the FDA-approved Light Adjustable Lens™ (LAL®). The achievement was celebrated alongside her entire care team, a fitting tribute to the collaborative spirit that defines excellence at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Unlike conventional cataract lenses, the LAL allows surgeons to fine-tune a patient’s vision after surgery through precisely targeted light treatments. This means prescriptions can be adjusted for distance, near, or intermediate vision based on the patient’s feedback before the result is permanently set. The technology is particularly valuable for patients with a history of LASIK, PRK, or other prior eye procedures, for whom standard lens calculations can be especially complex. Donaldson was the first surgeon at Bascom Palmer to offer the LAL and now leads a specialized team experienced in guiding patients through every step of the process. With LAL surgery representing just 4–5% of cataract procedures nationwide and performed by only a select group of surgeons, her expertise places Bascom Palmer at the forefront of this transformative technology.

Bascom Palmer Shines at AAO
Bascom Palmer Eye Institute made a significant impression at the 2025 annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the world’s largest and most comprehensive ophthalmic education conference. Bascom Palmer’s faculty members, residents, and fellows delivered more than 200 presentations, posters, courses, and symposia, highlighting the Institute’s reputation as a leader in patient care, education, and vision research.
Bascom Palmer’s 600-square-foot exhibit space was equally dynamic. The Beauty of Sight’s (a Lions Eye bank) specialized wet lab, offered immersive, hands-on training in corneal surgery, while the “Meet the Experts” sessions brought subspecialty colleagues together for focused presentations on emerging therapies and advances shaping the future of ophthalmology.
The AAO was also a moment of well-earned recognition for several of Bascom Palmer’s distinguished faculty. DONALD BUDENZ, M.D., M.P.H., was honored to deliver the prestigious Robert N. Shaffer Lecture, while CAROL KARP, M.D., presented the celebrated Jones/Smolin Lecture, two of the academy’s most coveted speaking invitations. HARRY W. Lunch & Learn
The Palm Beach Medical Forum, “Lunch & Learn” took place in February, showcasing the Institute’s latest vision research and advancements. EDUARDO C. ALFONSO, M.D., welcomed guests and emphasized how philanthropic support accelerates breakthroughs in medical research. He credited Phyllis and Richard Krock for underwriting the event and expressed gratitude to Forum patron Florida Crystals Corporation and Forum Society Sponsors Virginia and John Gildea, Sidney Kohl Foundation, Peggy Moore, Susan and Christopher Pappas, and Lee and Harvey Poppel.
The forum featured a presentation by glaucoma specialist KRISHNA KISHOR, M.D., who used creative analogies including gummies and M&Ms to illustrate eye disease. He highlighted Bascom Palmer’s research on axonal neuroprotection, explaining how new therapies aim to “recharge” failing axons before irreversible damage occurs and how researchers are exploring ways to encourage axon regrowth, offering hope for potential reversing damage once thought to be permanent.

Legacy in Steel
For decades, Mary and Sash Spencer, long-time friends and devoted supporters of Bascom Palmer, have built a distinguished collection of contemporary art. Their journey as collectors took a pivotal turn in 1986, when they were introduced to American sculptor Jedd Novatt, which sparked a lasting artistic relationship and commitment to his work.
In January, the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus was the setting for a dedication ceremony marking the gift of a Chaos Herrirako Atea monumental seven-meter Cor-Ten steel sculpture to the University’s public art collection. Mary generously gifted and dedicated the piece in loving memory of her husband, Sash. Novatt invites viewers to engage with the work over time, returning to it across different hours and lighting conditions, allowing the shifting interplay of light and shadow to continually reveal new dimensions and perspectives.
4 Your Eyes Only
On a lovely November afternoon in Naples, women gathered for an engaging afternoon of conversation, discovery, and a touch of glamour, all centered around a personal color analysis.
The event featured Debie Grass, a color analyst who shared practical, eye-opening tips on identifying your most flattering color palette, a journey that begins with your eyes. Attendees walked away with a new lens through which to view their wardrobe.
The excitement of the afternoon reached a peak when one lucky attendee received the ultimate style prize: a $5,000 shopping spree courtesy of Waterside Shops. It was the perfect ending to the afternoon. The event was proudly sponsored by PNC Private Bank.

Earlier this year, Bascom Palmer hosted its annual Ask the Experts event at The Ritz-Carlton Beach Resort in Naples. Virtual Visits
Many services you normally receive during an inperson visit can now be done with a virtual visit through a video chat or telephone call. A virtual visit with your eye doctor can determine if your condition can be treated safely at home or if you need an in-person visit at one of our locations. A virtual visit is a scheduled appointment with an eye doctor using your telephone or computer from the convenience and comfort of your home.
Do you have a common eye concern?
If so, a Rapid Virtual Eye Care Visit can be scheduled the same or next business day for common eye disorders such as:

• Eyelid swelling or tenderness
• Tearing or watery eyes
• Red or pink eyes
• Dry eyes
• Itchy eyes
• Eye pain or discomfort
• Discharge from eyes
• Flashes or floaters
• Change in vision
Almost all of our providers offer virtual visit appointments. If you are a new patient and have not seen a Bascom Palmer doctor, our appointment office will make your appointment with a doctor who specializes in your eye condition.
