Project
Spring 2021 Graduate Research Professor: Nicholas Bruscia
The first half of the semester focused on individual exploration of the declination process and its potential to create structure. I experimented with a plane that had varying degrees of π inserted within, and its spacial implications. A hybrid approach between physical and digital modeling was taken throughout the semester. Rhino and grasshopper were used to model, predict and fabricate study models.

Spring 2021 Graduate Research Professor: Nicholas Bruscia Partners: Marissa Hayden Sam Goembel Tom Cleary As a studio we split into 3 groups and selected Marissa Hayden’s model to move forward with. Her model was symmetrical along it’s three axis allowing it to be aggregated and stacked. We used Rhino, grasshopper, Kangaroo and Karamba3D to analyze tension and compression loads on the model and determine where the seams should be.

On the right is the final model that our group built. It is constructed out of 23 4x8 1/8” thick plywood sheets and then riveted & bolted together.

Varying patterns, fastening methods and types of plywood were employed based on our analysis. Currently the project is being displayed in Abbot Library with future plans of going to a children’s museum.

Haptic bubbles
Fall 2021 Graduate Research Professor: Albert Chao Partner: Cristian Copete
We started by first creating a box that would sense an ice cube and visualize the data using an Arduino and grasshopper Our final project takes the form of a haptic box enabled through a piezoelectric sensor. By tracking and measuring the vibrational inputs from stepping, tapping or slapping the box, it produces virtual reality bubbles in Fologram with varying sizes, colors and trajectories correlated to the collected data. By pushing the concept beyond our own project, such as interpolating them across a larger urban landscape, algorithmic art like our bubbles can create compelling digital spaces that are manifested by activities in reality.

By physically drawing out these recommendations, people passing by were given the ability to visualize these parameters which are normally imperceptible.

Spring 2017 Undergraduate work Professor: Thomas Provost Partners: Marissa Hayden Carter Laramee Althea Seno Ben Star Austin Wyles We were asked to build a vessel that utilized wood as the main material to create a tectonic system that we later would utilize to build a floating structure. We named the project ‘Stitch’ due to the fact that we employed stitching into the construction of the frame joinery and the canvas skin.

Stitch was built full scale and entered into a regatta on the Niagara River in competition with other models made by the rest of the class. We came in first place among 12 designs in the regatta. We also won the “Most Seaworthy Vessel” award.

In-The-Greenhouse Fall 2021 Graduate Research Professor: Brad Wales Partner: Nick Hills
In-The-Greenhouse is a tiny home embed within a greenhouse. The greenhouse serves as a semi tempered space, where food production can occur year round. In addition, it facilitates the modest interior living area to expand and flow into the enclosed space.

In-The-Greenhouse
Sun analysis was done to ensure maximum solar gains during the winter months while minimizing solar gains during the summer months. A south facing CMU wall was employed to maximize solar gains during the winter months. This wall also serves as a vertical Hydroponic garden.

The intended site is a vacant south facing lot in Buffalo, NY.

The bedroom is located on the second floor, separating it from the living space. This affords residents a view of the green roof and the sky above.

Spring 2017 Undergraduate work Professor: Matthew Hume & Karen Tashjian Teaching Assistant: Brandon Stone Partners: Aleiya Als Nicholas Bonora Stephanie Chawla Nick Eichelberger Yaliana Hernandez Justin Hess Jaidon Ramirez Zeno Althea Seno Austin Wyles This project was targeted for installation in Silo City, Buffalo, NY. Faculty chose my initial design as one of the 10 from all Fall 2016 submissions by the freshman class. I worked with a team of 9 students to further develop the concept and build a full scale model, which consisted of all wood joinery requiring over 6000 cuts. Click On Me!

We ran the prompts through a Sentiment Analysis algorithm, which uses machine learning to determine the sentiment of the prompts. As no prompt can ever truly be neutral, we aimed for an aggregated Neutral.
