Welcome to Barton Magazine. We are delighted to share this inaugural issue with you, our alumni and friends of Barton College.

In many ways, this magazine represents the bold spirit and vision that is revitalizing the mission of the College—the renewed energy to advance student learning while lifting up the relationships, history, and tradition that have made ACC and Barton the right place for students throughout the years.

I am proud of the strategic growth taking place at the College, which includes new academic programs, expanded opportunities for student hands-on learning, and new services to support and engage students, as well as our growing enrollment and aggressive planning for new facilities to enhance the Barton Experience.

Progress is happening daily at Barton, and our mindful, intentional change is allowing the College you know and love to best serve our students in the future.

I am proud to share our transition with you through these pages and in upcoming editions of Barton Magazine.

Transitioning to an electronic magazine is one of the innovative changes we have developed to better serve our Barton alumni and friends. The new magazine differs from its predecessor, Barton Scope, in a number of ways. Let me take a moment to explain those differences.

The magazine’s new format allows us to have a broader reach—to make it easier for you to access the magazine at home or on the road, on your computer, laptop, tablet, or phone. An electronic format also allows us to share more information with you. During the past year, our communications team has filmed and written more content than ever before, and forthcoming issues will continue to keep you informed and engaged in the life of the College.

I believe you will find the vision and values of Barton College woven throughout the magazine. BOLD STEPS FOR A NEW PRESIDENT

“A Call to Boldness,” the title of Dr. Douglas N. Searcy’s inaugural address, captured the spirit of an

historic April week in the life of Barton College and the essence of this new president’s vision for leadership. Just four words.

Yet, it was those four words during the installation ceremony on a cool, breezy Friday afternoon on the Aileen and Bill Parish Plaza at Howard Chapel that left “an indelible mark” on the audience and provided a visionary road map for Barton’s future.

During that 2016 ceremony where Dr. Searcy was formally recognized as Barton’s 12th president, the new strategic plan BartonBold was “unveiled,” and this college community began to move confidently into the future where bold thinking on campus will help form bold leadership in our students, our faculty and staff, and our broader communities.

“To me the concept of a ‘calling’ and the idea of ‘boldness’ are intimately linked together,” Dr. Searcy explained at the beginning of his inaugural address. “There is something interesting about a calling; it is seldom easy. You respond to a calling with passion and energy, and you pour yourself into it. That sounds bold to me.”

This bold thought and practice is evidenced by a number of strategic plan initiatives that are already underway. Barton is fully committed to building an academic culture of excellence—a culture that upholds common expectations that challenge students to perform at their highest potential inside and outside the classroom and also supports faculty development through a Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Dr. Searcy noted in his address that the faculty is the College’s number one asset at Barton. “They are experts, [they are] engaged, and, most importantly, they understand our students and what it takes to help them learn.”

Barton students will have a minimum of one hands-on learning experience each year to enhance their academic experience.

And, the College is adopting a consistent philosophy of student development, better known as the Barton Experience, which

is shaping a comprehensive “Boldness causes us to focus model for student success and on the future, driven by the student life. Dr. conviction of the possible.”

Searcy explained ............................................................ that this approach will focus on an emotionally intelligent design, adding, “Research suggests that 80% of success comes from focusing on skills that come through emotional intelligence, which includes problem solving, personal responsibility, critical thinking, and understanding and responding to the connectedness of work and relationships.”

The administration is focused on affordability for all students and is investigating new strategies to address cost, including cohort pricing, four-year cost guarantees, and other revisions to the standard tuition-increase model. And, to further reduce the cost to students, the College is working to ensure that all academic majors can be completed in four years.

“With 98% of our students receiving some form of aid, and more than 60% of students Pell eligible, we aim to keep college affordable,” Dr. Searcy emphasized.

The physical plant of the campus will continue to be a priority with renovations continuing in the residence halls.

Upgrades in furniture, lighting, and equipment are being planned for classrooms, as well as furniture upgrades in residence halls and public spaces on campus. The technology infrastructure will be further developed and enhanced to meet anticipated needs. From replacing the in-ground fiber optic network and foundational network equipment to increasing the quality and quantity of the bandwidth, Dr. Searcy has reiterated, “Our core will always be face-to-face education, but we are in Wilson, N.C., the gigabit city, so we will leverage the InnovateNC economic development initiative and enhance technology, remaining high-touch while also being high-tech.”

Dr. Searcy acknowledged the daunting work in higher education where tremendous challenges loom large for postsecondary education today: affordability, retention, outcomes assessment, competitive admissions, deferred maintenance, mental health support, academic readiness, violence on campus, job placement pressures, and the list goes on and on. Then, he posed the question: why would someone willingly wade into these uncertain waters?

“I guess all of us in higher education ask that question at some point, but I know for me, and for my colleagues here in the Barton community, we do what we do because we love what happens when a college student is transformed,” he continued. “When the student experiences the elation and joy that comes from learning and self-discovery, it’s powerful because it changes and defines students’ lives.

“And, it’s through this response that Barton provides a clear answer to the problems in higher education,” he emphasized.

“To this community, our calling means that we aim to be part of the solution. It means staring down the challenges, anxiety, and risks, and boldly proclaiming our purpose to serve students…we respond with a strong, resolute vision

and will, but also with compassion, love, persistence, partnership, and the engagement of a community fully committed to student learning.”

Dr. Searcy’s concluding remarks reiterated that BartonBold represents the next phase of the College’s development and success. “…critical themes in the BartonBold Strategic Plan have evolved from [our] strengths to counter the challenges we face, and guide our steps in the days ahead…There is much work to do, but as I look out at those assembled here today, I am more confident than ever that being bold for Barton is our shared calling, one in which we all can participate. Boldness causes us to focus on the future, driven by the conviction of the possible.”

At A Glance

Celebrating the inauguration of Barton’s 12th president spanned a full week of activities that included the College’s distinctive Day of Scholarship celebrating the exemplary scholarship of faculty as well as showcasing undergraduate research. A celebratory picnic for campus community members and their families served as a perfect backdrop for the next day’s signature event: the installation of Dr. Searcy. Following the installation ceremony on Friday, there was a formal but festive Inauguration Celebration on Center Campus. A Day of Leadership for students on Saturday provided a focus on leadership development.

And, on Sunday, the week ended with a moving service of worship in Howard Chapel. The Reverend J.O. Williams, retired associate regional minister for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina and a former Barton College trustee, delivered the inspirational sermon, titled “Bold in Service.”

Barton Leads NCAA DII with Leadership Academy

A little over a year ago, Barton College became the first NCAA Division II institution in the country to conduct a leadership academy through the Janssen Sports Leadership Center. The center provides Barton student-athletes with the tools needed to become world-class leaders in athletics, academics, and life.

When asked about the program, Director of Athletics Todd Wilkinson shared, “I felt that we had excellent leaders here on campus. They just seemed to lack the confidence to truly be leaders of their teams. That made me want to get the program at Barton started. Janssen is such an expert in his field, and I knew that if we could get the Barton studentathletes to work with him, there would be tremendous benefits.”

According to Wilkinson, the plan for the program moving forward is to continue to grow and build yearly. Although he knows it won’t be easy to sustain from year to year, he emphasized the importance of the program as he explained, “In my eyes, the people who are hiring for jobs are looking for leaders. The skills learned in this program will teach student-athletes how to deal with the adversity associated with leadership.”

A burgeoning program, the Barton Student-Athlete Leadership Academy is providing student-athletes with opportunities to excel in leadership skills, preparing them for leadership roles that reach beyond the fields and courts.

The program began with 80 students last year and now consists of 108 student-athletes. The Janssen model is made up of three distinct groups of student-athlete leaders: Emerging Leaders, Veteran Leaders, and Leadership 360.

The Emerging Leaders group is made up of high-potential sophomore student-athletes who will be molded into effective team leaders. The emphasis of the program is to create effective leaders by example, and leads to vocal leadership.

The Veteran Leaders Program is designed for a select group of juniors and seniors from all of Barton’s athletic teams. The program teaches student-athletes the skills necessary to be effective vocal leaders. The 360 program, in its first year, is designed for senior leaders who have made it through the aforementioned programs. This program focuses on applying leadership skills, which will positively impact the team, as well as the entire community.

Although the program is still in its beginning phases, it has already made a tremendous impact on the athletes involved.

One student-athlete in particular who has been positively impacted by the program is men’s basketball player Nick Ellison. In late April, the senior served as one of three Conference Carolinas representatives to the NCAA StudentAthlete Leadership Forum in Phoenix, Ariz.

“I became part of a family while there,” Ellison said. “I met a great group of people that I’m still friends with to this day…

Going on this trip was one of the five best experiences of my life.”

A Reverence for Excellence and Ethics

Excellence and ethics frame the work that defines Dr. Lucy Schultz, Dr. Jane Webster, and Dr. Rodney Werline, professors in the Religion and Philosophy Program. They balance a full teaching schedule with an often-hectic scholarly writing/ presentation/publication agenda. Yet, it is that delicate balancing act that stimulates their bold thinking and creativity in the classroom and in their writing. Their teaching and writing experiences are often intertwined, and the important work these scholars do, both inside and outside the classroom, gives meaning to their lives.

Dr. Schultz knew philosophy was her passion as she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with a Minor in Art at Luther College. From there, she earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy at SUNY Stony Brook and her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Oregon. Her dissertation “Creative Climate: East-West Perspectives on Art, Nature, and the Expressive Body” reflects her experience as a Researcher in Residence at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010. She has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and a book review, as well as delivering a wide variety of refereed and invited conference presentations. In her first year at Barton as an assistant professor of philosophy, Dr. Schultz is already making a significant impact on campus. She is currently working on a project on climate change examining ways humans and nature have been understood in relation to each other throughout history. In particular, Dr. Schultz is analyzing the hierarchy of Spirit over nature in G.W.F. Hegel’s philosophy of history in contrast with the ways nature and culture are conceived in the works of the modern Japanese philosophers Nishida and Watsuji.

Dr. Webster’s professional career began as a registered nurse. Her missionary work as a nurse and Christian education instructor in Paraguay led her to pursue a Bachelor in Theology degree with great distinction and first class honors from McGill University. She continued her studies, earning a Master of Arts degree and her Ph.D. in Religious Studies at McMaster University. Dr. Webster is fluent in the Spanish and French languages as well as Koine Greek, and she has an excellent command of the Hebrew, German, and Latin languages. She has authored or edited five books: “Ingesting Jesus: Eating and Drinking in the Gospel of John” (2003); two volumes of “Teaching the Bible in the Liberal Arts Classroom” (2012 and 2015); “Understanding Bible by Design” (2014); and “Lady Parts: Biblical Women and The Vagina Monologues” (2012), a collection of narratives inspired by the renowned play. She also has written numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and made numerous presentations at professional conferences. In 2015, Dr. Webster was just one of 26 faculty scholars from across the country invited to take part in the five-day 2015 Seminar on Teaching Interfaith Understanding in Chicago in 2015. She is an active member of the Society of Biblical Literature and a past co-chair of the Society of Biblical Literature’s Committee for the Status of Women in the Profession. A professor of religion and philosophy, she has served on the Barton faculty since 2000.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Dr. Webster serves as director for the new Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Prior to his joining the Barton faculty, Dr. Werline served as senior minister of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Greensboro while also teaching part time at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. And, he continues to fill the pulpit by invitation throughout the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in North Carolina Region. Yet, throughout his professional career, Dr. Werline has maintained a strong focus on teaching, research, and publishing. Since 2011, he has served as the series editor for “Early Judaism and Its Literature” (Society of Biblical Literature Press). He is the author of two books including “Pray Like This: Understanding Prayer in the Bible,” and co-editor of seven books, the most recent being the 2016

release of “The Bible in Political Debate: What Does It Really Say?” He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Kentucky Christian College and earned a Master of Divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in Religion at The University of Iowa. Dr. Werline is proficient in six languages including: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Ethiopic, French, and German. He also has a working knowledge of Syriac and Latin. As an expert in early Judaism and early Christianity, as well as religious experience and ritual theory, Dr. Werline has delivered a number of conference presentations across the United States and abroad. And, he has served as a Researcher in Residence at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He also is an active member in the Society of Biblical Literature. Dr. Werline joined the Barton faculty in 2007 when he was named the Leman and Marie Barnhill Endowed Chair in Religious Studies. In addition, he also serves as director of the Center for Religious Studies on campus.

These three esteemed professors follow in a long line of distinguished religion and philosophy scholars who have served on the faculty at Barton College and earlier at Atlantic Christian College.

recently, I have focused on interfaith understanding: why should we encourage it, what does it look like, how do we teach it, and how do we assess it. When most of our students will be working and possibly living in the global arena, it is critical that they can interact across cultures with grace and intelligence.

Werline: The recent book that I co-edited, “The Bible in Political Debate: What Does it Really Say?” has probably had the most direct relationship with the largest audience of any work that I have done. As a review of the book stated, the essays in the book fact-check politicians on their use of the Bible. As one would guess, they generally do a fairly bad job when using it. But my longer career in scholarship has had a few different larger aspirations. First—to make some contribution to Jewish-Christian relations by studying early Jewish texts. Second—to remind the scholarly world that religion is part of the everyday lives of real people, and not just a collection of ideas and literary forms. I don’t think that we will be able to understand the place of religion in our world, or the ancient world, until we understand that basic reality.

2. How has the scholarly/intellectual work you do impacted your life most significantly or directly?

When asked how their academic work in religion and philosophy affects their thought, their disciplines, and the broader world, and how it helps to shape their insight of the world’s challenges, these three scholars offered distinctive points of view.

1. Where does the scholarly/intellectual work you are most passionate about impact society most directly or significantly?

Schultz: As a philosopher, I think about the human condition, the possibility of knowledge, and the wonders of the cosmos everyday. I dwell on difficult questions and ponder beauty. This philosophical mentality—asking perennial questions and studying the different answers people have offered to them in different times and places—is my intellectual work. In my teaching, I share this mentality with my students and invite them to inhabit it with me for awhile. The impact I have on students is probably the biggest impact I have on society. In terms of my scholarship, my current work takes up issues pertaining to nature and the environment. I feel a sense of urgency to share that intellectual work at conferences and through publications.

I’m not sure how much impact that has on the world, but my hope is that it does.

Webster: My scholarly work currently focuses on two main areas. The first is the role of religious studies in defining and shaping the spiritual identity and nature of women. More

Schultz: Following up on the philosophical mentality described above, I would say that the intellectual work I do defines who I am. Philosophy is not just my job; it shapes my life in its entirety. Sometimes being awake to the world and asking difficult questions creates stress and sadness, but it is also inspiring and motivating. On a different note, being a professional philosopher has impacted my life in numerous practical ways. As I’ve pursued my degrees and won jobs, I have had to move quite frequently. Within the last decade or so, I’ve moved from New York to Oregon to Texas, and, now, to North Carolina. It’s been an adventure! I’ve enjoyed getting to know these vastly different parts of our country, but it’s also created some hardships. But I love what I am doing enough that the sacrifices have been worth it.

Webster: My scholarly work has arisen out of the challenges I faced as a woman serving in the evangelical church. My research and writing have given me the opportunity to explore the religious female in dialogue with others, and, as a result, I have made significant changes in my own religious and spiritual practices.

Werline: On a personal level, even after over 35 years of either being a student, minister or professor, when I get up each day, I am still as fascinated as ever by the study of biblical and early Jewish texts. Secondly, my collaborative scholarly work has also produced many wonderful friends and colleagues in North America, Europe, and Israel. They bring me such joy and happiness, and are truly a grace in my life.

3. What current trend/s in our society causes you the most concern, especially in light of your studies and research?

Schultz: I am most concerned about climate change and the disappearance of natural habitats and the other plants and animals we share the planet with. I think about climate change everyday and struggle with the ethical challenges it

presents. I am also concerned about the disconnection and lack of productive dialogue within American culture. As a nation, we don’t share a common set of basic truths about the world around us (like whether or not climate change is real, for example), and we don’t have venues to come together and share our perspectives. Social media hasn’t shown itself to be an adequate forum for genuine dialogue.

Webster: As the recent political debates clearly show, sexist attitudes continue to prevail and feed gender inequality and abuse. As many of our foundations for gender are shaped by our religious understanding, we still have work to do. Likewise, religious intolerance and conflict is based on fear and ignorance; learning about other religions is the first step to resolving these tensions.

Werline: I am especially concerned about the growing nationalism and xenophobia in the U.S. and western Europe. My European friends are quite concerned as well.

4. What current trend/s in our society give you the most hope, especially in light of your studies and research?

Schultz: The open mindedness of young people gives me hope. The crossing of cultures and interest in learning about folks who come from different faiths and other backgrounds is very exciting to me. Working with bright, enthusiastic students fuels my passion for the work that I do.

Webster: More and more people are challenging religious traditions that no longer have meaning nor serve their communities. As a result, many seek different expressions of spirituality.

And, any time people ask themselves why they are doing something, they often live more respectful, intentional, and informed lives. This includes developing healthier attitudes towards other people.

Werline: I remain hopeful because I think that younger people are more open and accepting of others than the older generations and the generation now in power. So, they are the antidote to the nationalism, xenophobia, bigotry, and racism that I mentioned above.

Looking Back An Excerpt from “Faculty Profile: Dr. Roger A. Bullard” (Scope, Issue 214, 1989) The office walls are filled with books— from the floor to the ceiling. A vintage typewriter is close by. It serves as a comfortable work place for Roger Bullard, noted scholar and professor of religion at Atlantic Christian College. He is a man who appreciates books. Not only is he a teacher, he is a writer internationally known for his translations. His interest in ancient languages can be traced back to the ninth grade while taking his first course in Latin. He is fluent only in English; however, he reads Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and many more languages. He made up his mind to become a teacher during his first year at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, where he received the bachelor of arts degree.

He later received a bachelor of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Seminary, a master’s from the University of Kentucky, and a doctor of philosophy degree from Vanderbilt University.

Bullard is internationally recognized as a scholar and translator of ancient Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and a number of other languages. He was among a group of scholars who translated the Old Testament and the Apocrypha into a modern English version that was published in 1975 by the American Bible Society as the “Good News Bible” or “Today’s English Version.”

Bullard has made three significant contributions to the newly published revised edition of “The Nag Hammadi Library in English,” which include the introduction to “The Hypostasis of the Archons,” and his translations of “The Second Treatise of the Great Seth,” and “The Apocalypse of Peter.” The 550-page work is a collection of Coptic Gnostic books whose texts were unearthed in 1945 near the town of Nag Hammadi in upper Egypt. There were found about the same time as the Dead Sea Scrolls. “They were the productions of groups of Gnostics who lived in Egypt in the centuries after Christ,” said Bullard. “The Gnostics were groups who shared certain ideas in common such as the idea that one was saved, not by the law or by faith, but by knowledge of certain secret mysteries. These were the kinds of things they wrote about in these books.”

“There were about 40 documents in the find, which were written in Coptic, the language used in Egypt for a couple of centuries before and after Christ,” according to Bullard. “It has only been within the last 20 years they were publicized because they did not have as much intrinsic interest to as many people as the Dead Sea Scrolls.” Discovery of the documents is now seen as equally significant as the Dead Sea Scrolls. They bring to light a long-hidden well of new information, resources, and insights into early Judaism and the roots of Christianity.

Dr. Bullard, professor emeritus of religion and philosophy, served on the College faculty from 1965-1994. He is also well known for his book “Messiah: The Gospel according to Handel’s Oratorio,”(1993) which continues to appeal to those in both the religion and music disciplines.

Book Release Coincided With National Election

In a year when political debate has been front and center across the country, the timing was perfect for the recently published “The Bible in Political Debate: What Does It Really Say?” co-edited by Dr. Rodney A. Werline at Barton College and Dr. Frances Flannery at James Madison University.

Released this past fall by Bloomsbury T&T Clark, the book had the media buzzing before it even hit the bookshelves. “Modern American politicians often refer to Scripture in speeches and in support of policy, and they are rarely fact-checked by the experts,” said Nina Burleigh, national politics correspondent for Newsweek Magazine.

“In this accessible, vibrant collection of essays, nonpartisan Biblical scholars of many creeds, including nonbelievers, examine what the Bible really says about family values, women’s rights, homosexuality, abortion, and even how to deal with man-caused climate change, and present some surprising answers to the vital question of how and whether the Bible can be the basis of the secular nation’s public policy.”

Bloomsbury T&T Clark highlights the book, noting, “Politicians and pundits, from Donald Trump’s ‘bungled’ ‘Two Corinthians’ reference to Hillary Clinton’s rare allusions, regularly invoke the Bible in social and political debates on a host of controversial social and political issues, including: abortion, stem-cell research, gay marriage, the death penalty, separation of church and state, family values, climate change, income distribution, teaching evolution in schools, taxation, school prayer, aid for the poor, and immigration. But is the Bible being used out of context in these major debates?”

The co-editing team of Werline and Flannery has compiled 14 essays by biblical scholars who examine the use of the Bible in political debates, uncovering the original historical contexts and meanings of the biblical verses that are commonly cited. The contributors take a non-partisan approach to show how specific texts have been distorted to support particular views. At the same time, they show how the Bible can sometimes make for unsettling reading in the modern day. The key questions remain: What does the Bible really say? and Should the Bible be used to form public policy?

Steadfast Partners on Campus

A college campus and a local police department may seem unlikely partners, but not so in Wilson. Since August 1, 2002, Barton College has formally partnered with the Wilson Police Department. While maintaining security and law enforcement for the campus community, Wilson police officers also provide programming and outreach for campus students and employees. Barton’s Criminology & Criminal Justice Sciences Program employs officers to lead some courses in its program and provides a strong graduate candidate pool for future employment with the Wilson Police Department. The collaboration has proven quite successful.

Captain Kendra Howell, District Commander for the Wilson Police Department, works closely with Barton District Office Sergeant Steven Stroud. Stroud is directly responsible for supervising the Barton District officers, and he provides leadership for most media needs and crime analysis, as well as the parks and recreation areas in the city of Wilson.

Others among the distinguished police unit on Barton’s campus are officers Felicia Artis, Ryan Brown, Eric Cobb, and Jeremy Hessell, who rotate patrol shifts 24/7 on campus under Stroud’s supervision.

Another dedicated member of the team is the Barton District Office’s administrative assistant, Ann Flowers, employed by Barton College.

Finally, overall leadership of the Barton District Office comes from Howell’s supervisor, Major Craig Smith, and, ultimately, Chief of Police Thomas Hopkins.

Chief Hopkins emphasized, “We are extremely proud of our partnership with Barton College. Since becoming Chief of Police at the Wilson Police Department, I have observed our partnership increasingly grow in the area of community policing, educational programs, and recruitment.”

Stroud noted that “maintaining operational readiness as it relates to crime on campus,” and, at the same time, “increasing community relations between the unit and the Barton community” are central to his vision for the Barton District Office. In a time when community relations with police departments are strained across many cities, the Wilson Police Department is further emphasizing community service and transparency. Howell added, “This fiscal year alone, the Police Department will hit over 20,000 hours of

Additionally, the majority of those hours are directed towards our community’s youth.”

Howell shared one particular story that proved a perfect example of the department’s commitment to community.

Officer Eric Cobb had just finished working a 12-hour night shift. When others would have chosen to go home and rest, Cobb simply changed clothes and began assisting the Barton campus during the College’s annual Day of Service.

Cobb is among a growing number of Barton Bulldogs who now proudly wear the uniform of the Wilson Police Department.

John Lee Named New Chair of the Barton College Board of Trustees

A torchbearer is defined as one who leads or inspires others in working toward a valued goal. Trustee John F. Lee’s name could be the second listed definition. Just eight years out of College, Lee began serving as a member of the College’s Board of Trustees, and he has held the torch high for his alma mater ever since.

Lee was officially installed as Chair of the Barton College Board of Trustees at the fall 2016 meeting. He follows fellow trustee Dr. Gregg A. DeMar of Connecticut, who served as Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2011-2016.

“John Lee’s election as our new Chair of the Barton College Board of Trustees is a testament of the Board’s confidence in the leadership of this distinguished trustee who has demonstrated a steadfast commitment and dedication to Barton College for the past 26 years,” said Dr. Douglas N. Searcy, President of Barton College. “Respected by his fellow Board members, John is a proven leader with keen business acumen and a visionary perspective for his alma mater. The Barton community will benefit greatly with John Lee at the helm of our Board of Trustees. I look forward to working with our new Board Chair and the Board of Trustees as, together, we continue to lead Barton into a bright and healthy future.”

During Lee’s tenure on the Board, he has served as a member of the Finance and Trusteeship committees, and as Chair of the Student Affairs Committee. He also has served as a member of the Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee. Devoted to the College, Lee and his Barton alumna wife, Lynn, have given generously of their time, energy, and financial resources, most recently supporting the Lee Entrance, which opens onto the crescent drive

of the campus’ recently constructed West Entrance. The Lees’ philanthropic support is recognized through their membership in the Barton Society, the Torchbearer’s Society, the Heritage Society, and the Bell Society.

“I began my career in business at 20 years old due to the death of my father, James L. Lee,” shared Lee. “It was very important to my parents that I earn a college degree, and without Barton, due to my circumstances, that would not have been possible. Getting a college degree at the same time as running a business during a severe recession taught me that hard work and perseverance pay off. I am grateful to the institution, its administration, and faculty for what they stand for; it will be an honor to serve in any capacity that is asked of me. The relationships with the people we have met during our years with the College have been rewarding and enriching for Lynn and me. Our association with the College is something we cherish. As Chair of Lee Motor Group, Inc. in Wilson, Lee oversees the management of automobile dealerships in four states, one of which is Lee Ford Lincoln in Wilson, a dealership in continuous operation since 1953. Other dealerships in Wilson include Lee Nissan and Lee Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Under Lee’s leadership, his dealerships have received numerous awards from the manufacturers he represents including Ford, Lincoln, Nissan, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis. Lee Motor Company has been presented with Ford’s highest award, the President’s Award,

a total of four times. Lee Nissan has been the recipient of the Merit Master Award, Nissan’s highest honor. Lee Hyundai of Fayetteville has received the Board of Excellence Award from Hyundai. Both Kia Country of Charleston and Kia Country of Savannah have been honored with the President’s Award from Kia.

dirt tracks and, in 1992, he competed in the Florida 200 at Daytona International Speedway. Licensed as a Winston Racing Series NASCAR driver from 1993 to 1999, he won more than 30 events. With Ford Motor Credit Corporation as a sponsor, he was a NASCAR champion in 1999. He retired from competition that year.

Lee earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Barton College (then Atlantic Christian College) in 1982. In 1997, he was named “Alumnus of the Year” by Barton College, and, in 2011, he was the recipient of the Wilson-Barton Partnership Business Leadership Award.

Lee is a certified private pilot with instrument, multi-engine, sea plane, and rotorcraft ratings with a total of 5,500 hours.

He enjoys using aviation as a tool in the management of his dealerships.

His involvement in area business affairs and community service is wide-ranging. Past positions include membership on the Greenfield School Board of Trustees, Salvation Army Boys Club Council, Wilson County Heart Association, and Wilson’s First Baptist Church Board of Deacons. Currently, Lee serves as a Board member of the N.C. Automobile Dealers Association, and he is on the Wilson Board of Directors for Southern Bank. In January 2017, he will assume the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina where he has been a member of the Board for four years.

Lee also enjoys fishing and hunting with his daughter. He has developed a passion for the freedom to hunt and for promoting wildlife conservation and management in North America and worldwide. This passion manifests itself in his lifetime memberships in the non-profit Wild Sheep Foundation, Safari Club International, and Grand Slam Club Ovis. He is currently pursuing the Grand Slam of North American Wild Sheep, which is considered to be the pinnacle of hunting achievement.

Lee and his wife, Lynn, make their home in Nash County with their 11-year-old daughter, Luisa. The Lees are members of the First Baptist Church of Wilson.

In addition to his business and civic accomplishments, Lee also pursues various other interests. He participated in automobile racing from 1985 to 1999. He began on local

Athletics Academic Awards for Athletes

Several of Barton’s athletic teams had outstanding seasons off the playing field in 2015-2016 as reflected in awards recognizing their academic success.

This past summer, four BC programs were honored with awards for team academic achievement – women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s golf.

The women’s volleyball team received an AVCA Team Academic Award from the America Volleyball Coaches Association. The Lady Bulldogs finished the year with a 3.47 cumulative team GPA, and landed 13 of their 16 players on both the fall and spring editions of the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll.

Both tennis teams earned an ITA Team Academic Award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The women’s team posted a combined 3.53 cumulative GPA, and all nine squad members made the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll in the fall of 2015. Eight of the nine were also included on the spring 2016 list. The men’s team recorded a combined GPA of 3.39, and had six players make the league’s honor roll each semester.

Men’s golf was honored with a Team Academic Award by the Golf Coaches Association of America. That award was based on a combination of academic and athletic performance. Barton’s team produced a collective GPA of 3.42. Nine of the squad’s 12 members were selected to the Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll in both the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters.

In addition to the team awards, nine individual players received awards from those national organizations.

Women’s tennis players Smiljana Kljajic, Rebecca Lamm, Vanessa Sanoja, and Casey Utley were each honored with 2016 ITA Scholar Athlete Awards, as were men’s players Nick Genest, Jake McCartney, Daniel Radu, and Rafael Ruiz Velasco. Men’s golfer Tyler Robbins was chosen as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in that sport.

Across all sports, Barton’s student-athletes earned a combined GPA of 3.01.

Barton Swimming Barton began its first season of competition in swimming this year and immediately made a big splash.

The men posted eight individual wins in their program debut and captured a team victory in their first home meet. Women’s swimmer Annika Jasek-Rysdahl won two races in her BC debut and became the school’s first Bluegrass Conference Swimmer of the Week.

Three-peat for Allan Sharp Award

For the third year in a row, Conference Carolinas has honored Barton College with its Allan Sharp Award for Academic Excellence.

It is the first time in the known history of the award that one school has received it three consecutive times. However, it cannot be confirmed as unprecedented since some league records are missing from around the turn of the 21st century.

The honor is given to the conference institution with the highest Academic Success Rate among student-athletes as measured by the NCAA. Although the award was given for 2016, it was based on the number of scholarship studentathletes who graduated within a six-year time period ending with the 2014-15 academic year.

Barton saw 76 percent of its scholarship student-athletes graduate within the six-year window. For the third consecutive year, the women’s tennis program posted a perfect 100 percent graduation rate. Men’s volleyball also achieved a 100 percent mark, followed by baseball and softball with 90 percent.

“This award is a well-deserved tribute to the Barton faculty and staff who work so hard to inspire the futures of all the students who chose Barton College,” said Todd Wilkinson, Barton’s director of athletics. “The Barton coaching staff works hard to recruit the well-rounded student-athlete who desires a life after collegiate athletics. The three-peat of the Sharp Award certainly validates the work that the coaches do in recruiting and the faculty produce through educating.”

The award is made even more meaningful by the fact that it is named for the late Dr. Allan R. Sharp, who served for more than 20 years as Barton’s faculty athletic representative and for 38 years as a member of the College’s faculty, retiring as a professor emeritus of religion and philosophy. As the league noted in its press release, “Dr. Sharp championed the role of athletics as an educational activity and the importance of each athlete performing at the same level of excellence in the classroom as on the court or field.”

A Bold Leader Among Peers

Among the thousands of student-athletes around the country who have taken part in a leadership academy through the Janssen Sports Leadership Center over the past 12 years, only about two percent have achieved its highest accolade, the Leader of Distinction. That puts Barton’s Riley Bane in elite company.

A junior academically and redshirt sophomore on the women’s volleyball team, Bane reached that prestigious level in the first year of the Barton Leadership Academy. The recognition was awarded based on the very high marks she received from her teammates and coaches in areas of personal leadership (commitment, confidence, composure, character) and team leadership (servant leader, team builder, confidence-builder, re-focuser, and enforcer).

“Riley impressed me from day one as someone who truly cares about her team’s success and is willing to put in the work to make it happen,” said Jeff Janssen, the founder and president of the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.

As a setter—the quarterback of the offense—for the volleyball program at Fike High School and as the daughter of two Barton alumni heavily involved in leadership in their own right, Art and Susan Bane, Riley already had strong leadership skills when she arrived at Barton. However, she said it took the Barton Leadership Academy to help her see that in herself.

“We did a survey about ourselves, and our coaches and teammates took it too, and they put me very high on being a vocal leader,” Bane said. “I put myself mid- to lower. I didn’t think I handled conflict and controversy well, but they thought I did. So having that survey to see what other people thought about me opened my eyes. I’ve learned that other people see me as a vocal leader. Without the leadership academy, I wouldn’t have known that.

“It shows me what other people think of me. Coming into college, I struggled with confidence, and, now, I don’t. It also shows me that other people do believe in me, because sometimes I don’t believe in myself. It shows me that other people know I’m capable of doing it. It makes it easier to have confidence.”

At Barton, Bane plays primarily as a libero—the director of the defense. Her leadership training has played a significant role in her success at the position, providing her the freedom to be bold in her interactions with her teammates.

“I feel like I can express my opinion a lot more,” she said. “I have gotten closer with my teammates, because I’ve learned how each one likes to be talked to.

I may have one person where I can get in their face and say, ‘Come on, pick it up,’ and there may be someone else that I need to pat on the shoulder and encourage. So I’ve learned how to talk to my teammates in terms of communication.”

Now in her second competitive season for the Lady Bulldogs (she sat out last year as a result of an injury), Bane’s development has been obvious to fifth-year head coach Jeff Lennox. Her play—but also her leadership—have been key components in Barton’s march towards its first Conference Carolinas title since 1991.

“I’ve had the opportunity to witness Riley grow and mature into a team leader,” Lennox said. “Her unwavering commitment to the greater good of the group has earned her the trust and respect of her teammates and myself. Riley inspires everyone around her to work and play hard with confidence and self-assurance. Her competitive spirit lights a fire in her teammates, leading them to believe that anything is possible.”

Conference Carolinas Champions

For the first time in program history, the Barton College women’s volleyball team was named Conference Carolinas Tournament Champions on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, following a 3-0 ((25-16, 25-20, 27-25) defeat of Erskine College.

Barton, the North Division Champion, came back from a seven-point deficit in the final set to claim the championship crown and earn a spot in the NCAA Regional Tournament held earlier in December.

The first set of action was mostly controlled by the host team as Barton hit .516 as a team to climb out of an early deficit. Barton once again claimed a win in the second set to build a two-set match lead.

In the third and final set of play, Erskine built an early lead and extended its advantage to 20-13 before Barton head coach Jeff Lennox called a timeout.

His team responded with five unanswered points to get within two points of the Erskine lead, tying the match at 21-21 and taking the lead on back-to-back Hayley Marshburn kills. The match was tied four more times down the stretch until consecutive kills from senior Mariana Kedzia and junior Courtney Wiseman gave Barton its first tournament title.

Sophomores Angelica Acevedo, Riley Bane, and Allie Cullens were all named to the All-Tournament Team during a postgame ceremony, with Acevedo earning Conference Carolinas Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

100-Year-Old Diploma Gifted Back To Barton

by Kathy Daughety A 100-year-old gift recently made to Barton College has stirred great interest and conversation on campus this past fall, especially during the Homecoming Weekend celebration.

The thoughtful and heartwarming gift from James Van Taylor III, M.D., of Wilson is a 1916 Atlantic Christian College diploma that was awarded to Sallie Hadley Bunting in the spring of that year. Mrs. Bunting is the late maternal grandmother of Dr. Taylor.

While Barton has some wonderful examples of early-awarded diplomas in its archives, the gift of this diploma is particularly meaningful to the College because of its century anniversary this past year.

“We are incredibly appreciative of this gift from Dr. Taylor, a well-respected physician in our local community, who also serves as a physician in Barton’s Student Health Center,” shared Dr. Douglas N. Searcy, president of Barton College. “We are privileged to be able to honor the legacy of this graduate, Sallie Hadley Bunting, who understood 100 years ago the intrinsic value of a college education for a full life, especially for young women.”

Dr. Taylor’s grandmother, Sallie Hadley Bunting, was born in 1895 in Williamston, N.C. She took the train to Wilson to attend Atlantic Christian College and completed her degree in 1916. Her roommate was Fannie Harper, the daughter of A.C.C.’s second president, Dr. J.J. Harper.

When Dr. Taylor’s grandmother graduated, she began a career in education as a principal for a small community school in Hassell, N.C., not far from Oak City and Bethel. A couple of years later, she and her soon-tobe husband, Vance Bunting, married when he returned from World War I, and they began their family. While she raised her family of three daughters, she continued to instill in them the importance of education. They followed in their mother’s footsteps

becoming educators who taught in the classroom.

“Mrs. Bunting believed in the importance of higher education, which led to her daughters completing their degrees and her grandchildren following suit,” continued Dr. Searcy.

“Her encouragement also touched the lives of students during her early career as a principal, and there are untold stories about those students who went on to earn college degrees and encourage others. The centrifugal influence of just one person can be staggering when used for great purpose.

Mrs. Bunting used her influence to encourage the pursuit of higher education at a time when it was not necessarily the norm for men, and even less so for women.”

“We are most pleased to be able to share this piece of our family history with Barton College,” Dr. Taylor said.

“My grandmother was very proud of her A.C.C. education, and she believed it was important for her children and grandchildren to also earn a college degree. I think she would be pleased to know that the family has returned this cherished diploma to her alma mater and that it is on display to inspire those students enrolled now at Barton.”

“Rewritten” With Resounding Success!

Once is a trial, twice is a trend, and three times is a new tradition.

If you haven’t been to a Barton Homecoming in the last couple of years, then you have missed what is fast becoming one of our alumni’s favorite new traditions—tailgating. Alumni don’t need a football game to tailgate; they just need a great reason to get together. And, that reason is Homecoming Weekend at Barton.

Summer Brock, director of alumni relations, and the Barton College Alumni Board have “rewritten the rulebook” when it comes to Homecoming Weekend. And, it actually does take a small booklet these days to list all the activities in which alumni can participate. With 500700 alumni returning during any given year, Homecoming at Barton is a whole new experience.

New activities and events fill the Weekend. From the annual Bulldog Superball Golf Tournament, Athletic Hall of Fame festivities, and the Alumni Awards Breakfast to intercollegiate soccer matches, theatre performances and art exhibitions, a wide variety of alumni reunion gatherings, and a fabulous dance under the tent with a signature band, there really is something for all alumni. Did we mention the Greek Alumni Social for both Greeks and Independents, and the alumni basketball, softball, and baseball games? And, don’t forget the newest favorite activity on the list—tailgating!

Just beyond the new West Entrance, brightly decorated tents pop up across the green lawn of Harper Hall during Homecoming Weekend.

And, alumni groups gather from “all walks of campus life” to turn up the tunes, throw some burgers or wings on the grill, and kick back to enjoy being on campus. Everyone is catching up with each other as they move from tent to tent to visit old friends and meet new alumni.

A Passion for Serving

Each year, in the heart of the spring season, Captain Kendra Howell of the Wilson Police Department can be found cycling over 500 miles alongside dozens of other law enforcement officials. The “Ride for Hope” departs from Raleigh and concludes in Washington, D.C. Howell completes this sixday ride to honor fallen police officers and raise funds for their families. The annual event is organized by the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation and Law Enforcement United.

Howell considers participating, and riding in general, as one of her hobbies and passions.

On any other normal day, you will find Howell serving as the District Commander for the Wilson Police Department, Barton District.

“Ever since I was five years old, I wanted to be a police officer,” she shared. “My mother told me that as soon as I could walk and talk, I had a fascination with the uniform.” Howell grew up in the small community of Nahunta in North Carolina’s Wayne County. After graduating high school, she attended East Carolina University and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. Howell remembered, “After graduation, it came down to getting hired by the Wilson Police Department or the Cary Police Department.” Howell made her choice, and she has spent the last 24 years moving up the chain of command.

As the highest ranking female officer in the department, Howell noted, “The career path, particularly in law enforcement, is better now than it was 24 years ago for women.” She admits that although it can be challenging not having a peer that shares her gender, she doesn’t feel any pressure. She works hard to serve as a role model and mentor to others in the department during every shift.

Passionate about serving the Barton College and Wilson communities, Howell’s words and actions reflect her dedication and commitment each and every day.

2015 Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

The Reverends Sharon Hazelrigg Ginn and Stephen Ginn, members of the Class of 1959, have been active with the College and their communities throughout their lives.

2016 Their involvement with the College began when they DISTINGUISHED were students. Among their many activities, Stephen ALUMNI AWARD served as president of the Senior Class while Sharon RECIPIENTS led the way as head cheerleader. During her acceptance remarks for the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award, Sharon shared in third person voice about her college experience, “She was completely unaware that through the experiences in the classroom, dormitory life, extracurricular activities, working at the local Christian Church (DOC) and many friendships made, the very foundation of her life was being formed. She had been enveloped and nurtured by a faith community on and off the campus, and her life mission lay before her.”

Following their graduation from A.C.C., the pair attended Lexington Theological Seminary, leading to fulfilling lives in ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), always with a focus on social justice and equality. They proved that co-ministry was possible when others told them it was a mistake to try. They have served churches and communities from South America to North Carolina with several stops in between. Always taking an active role in the communities they served, Stephen and Sharon sought out those in need and worked to make a positive difference. Today, they make their home in Snow Hill where they are active with the Arts and Historical Society and the Development Commission. In her introduction of the pair, Mary Betty Barnes Kearney, Class of 1971, said, “They served [as missionaries] in South America between 19951970…Sharon and Stephen came home to a very different America. One they were not really prepared for. Their lives had been impacted greatly by living as minorities in a much simpler culture. They made a conscious decision with their family to live a simple lifestyle and to integrate themselves into multiracial communities and neighborhoods. Many challenges would confront them and their children throughout their 40 years of ministry. But they held fast to their convictions and their issues of social justice and equality…Stephen and Sharon have exemplified every steadfast example of Christian love, dignity, and integrity throughout their 50-plus years together. They are avid supporters of this College in every way. They are generous with their time and talents. They have absolutely no prejudices, and they continue to be strong in their faith as Disciples of Christ.” During the conclusion of Stephen’s acceptance remarks for the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award, he shared, “I am still persuaded in faith that there is really a gracious Presence that calls us to go where life is being lived, and, there, to engage life. And, that out of our engagement with life, we will find purpose and meaning.”

Richard T. “Rick” Clayton, Class 2016 of 1977, has ALUMNI served with ACHIEVEMENT great integrity AWARD a number of RECIPIENT congregations in the Methodist Church throughout his professional career, most recently as the senior minister of Hayes Barton Methodist Church in Raleigh for 12 years, where he has led the church to phenomenal growth during a time when many churches are suffering with declining memberships. In each letter of nomination, friends and congregants spoke of his “caring and sensitive heart for all, committed to God’s call in his life,” and he was recognized for his servant leadership approach.

In accepting his 2016 Alumni Achievement Award, Rick moved many in the audience to tears as he spoke of the place the College holds in his heart. “This place taught me what it means to give, and how to serve all humanity, and how to treat other people as human beings with love and affection. This institution shaped my life. This institution inspired me to become a minister of the Gospel, and I am privileged every day to stand before my congregants and speak with intelligence because John Wesley said, “Never leave your head in the narthex. Bring it to worship.”

ACHIEVEMENT Since leaving in AWARD 2007, she has RECIPIENT worked for the College Foundation of North Carolina as a regional representative. Throughout her professional life, she has served families from Florida to Connecticut in their pursuit of a college education.

In accepting her 2016 Alumni Achievement Award, Amy shared a few of the stories she says may one day fill a book. The stories are of the students, and their parents, that she has worked with during her career.

The stories are about the opportunity to show them that college is possible, and that the dream can come true. In reflecting on her experiences, she said, “We all have one thing in common— this institution—what it has taught us and where it has brought us. Both the love of helping people and the love of serving my community were rooted right here at Barton College. The years I spent here, and the people I came to know here, all helped shape the person I am today. To care about others, to want to serve others, to want to see the good in others, and hear their stories. I think my story is best told through their stories.”

A social worker with the Wilson County Health Department, Leslie Adams 2016 Warren, Class of OUTSTANDING 2013, earned RECENT her master’s GRADUATE degree from AWARD East Carolina University in May of 2016 while marrying her college sweetheart, Greg, and becoming a first-time mom to their son, Asher. In addition to all the life changes facing a recent graduate, Leslie made time for a multitude of service and volunteer opportunities including the Community Crisis Center of Goldsboro, The Salvation Army of Wilson, Wesley Shelter of Wilson, the Wilson Crisis Center, the Wilson Pregnancy Center, and many more. During her acceptance remarks, Leslie noted, “I not only received a commendable education from Barton College, but I found faith and bonds of friendship that can’t be broken through time and space. I received courage from my professors and sorority sisters to reach for the stars and to never accept limitations of what life had dealt me in the past.” With a strong commitment to serving the needs of the community, and working with adults and children with disabilities, Leslie is an excellent recipient of the 2016 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award.

When Fan Faulkner Williamson, Class of 1963, sets her mind to a task, you can count on 2016 it being done ALUMNI SERVICE well, on time, AWARD and with energy and enthusiasm.

Co-chair of her 50th Reunion in 2013, Fan used that as a “leaping off point” for the Class of 1963. The class continues to hold annual reunions at Homecoming. This year marks number 53. That’s not all that falls into her organizational skills. With a group of Phi Sigma Tau sisters, and anyone else they choose, they gather three more times a year to swap stories from their college days, share a meal, and stay tuned-in with one another’s lives. In accepting the award, Fan said, “We continue to communicate with one another through visits, texts, email, phone calls, lunches, and dinners.

We enjoy our friendships all year, which is so important and meaningful, especially in our golden years. The bond we have established is absolutely incredible.” Fan Williamson is the first recipient of the Alumni Service Award. The award was established to recognize alumni who have shown consistent loyal service to the College.

It recognizes the achievements of individuals working on behalf of Barton College through service in alumni programs or advisory committees who have devotedly served the College for an extended period of time.

Kathryn “Kathy” Whitehurst Daughety, Class of 1980, was born to 2016 be a Barton GARY W. HALL Bulldog. She EMPLOYEE grew up on SERVICE the campus of AWARD Atlantic Christian College, where her father Zeb M. Whitehurst III, a member of the Class of 1955, served the College in a variety of professional roles, including director of alumni affairs, dean of students, and director of college relations. It seemed the natural choice when Kathy chose A.C.C. for her collegiate career. Now, in the middle of her 30th year of employment at the College, Kathy looks out at a very different, yet very much the same, place of her youth. She began her Barton career in Admissions before moving on to what would become her life’s work as director of public relations. Here, she has shown great skill and passion in facilitating how Barton College is represented to others. She has been loyal in her service to this institution, protecting its integrity and shouting its successes. For Kathy, it is all about the story—Barton’s story. She told the alumni audience, “Barton’s story is about our students, our faculty and staff, and our alumni. It’s about your experiences, your dreams, and your aspirations, it’s about the goals you have reached and what you still want to accomplish…The next chapter begins right now.”

A revered coach, not only at Barton, but also regionally, Tom Parham, Class of 1963, led the 2015 Bulldogs to NAIA DISTINGUISHED National Tennis ALUMNI AWARD Championships RECIPIENT in 1979 and 1984, and earned another championship while coaching at Elon University in 1990. He has authored two books, “The Little Green Book of Tennis” and “A LOT (A Level of Thinking).” Tom serves on the N.C. Tennis Association’s Board of Directors and is a member of countless Halls of Fame, including Barton College. For his steadfast commitment and service to collegiate tennis and his achievements in the sport, Tom was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

As Russell Rawlings said in his introduction, “Throughout his career, Tom has remained loyal and committed to his alma mater. He acquired no great fortune, unless you measure wealth in terms of lives impacted, friends made, and careers influenced. By those standards, he may well be the richest man alive.”

Developing and nurturing relationships with students in the 2015 College’s dining HONORARY hall for 31 years, ALUMNUS ARAMARK AWARD Higher Education RECIPIENT food services director, Tony Tilley has helped countless students transition into college life by making them feel welcomed on campus. He has encouraged students to reach high when setting academic and personal goals, and served as a “counselor” and friend when needed. His charismatic nature, selfless service, and neverending dedication to the College has endeared Tony Tilley to the Barton community and earned him the most deserving moniker of honorary Barton Bulldog.

Serving Barton College for more than 25 years as the college’s director of athletics and 2015 18 years as EMPLOYEE men’s soccer SERVICE coach, Gary AWARD W. Hall, Class of 1980, has left an indelible mark on Barton Athletics. The College’s Athletics Program grew from nine sports, when he began as director, to 18 intercollegiate sports when he retired in 2015 from the AD role.

He retired from coaching in 2007 with an 18-year record of 188-17635. He now lends his experience as Athletic Campaign Consultant for the College’s Institutional Advancement Department. He also proudly wears the title of director of athletics emeritus.

Following the award’s presentation, it was announced that going forward, the award will be known as the Gary W. Hall Employee Service Award.

An advocate for children with special needs, Mary Kay Grever Irwin, Class 2015 of 1998, director ALUMNI of the School of ACHIEVEMENT Health Services AWARD at Nationwide RECIPIENT Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, lectures and writes on the subject nationally and internationally. She also serves as an adjunct instructor in the School of Education at the University of Cincinnati. Mary Kay graduated from Barton with a B.S. in Deaf Education. She then successfully obtained her Master of Education degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Indiana and her Ed.D. in Special Education from the University of Cincinnati. In accepting the award she said, “Barton College is a special, special school.

Not only did I receive an outstanding education, but it is through my experiences as an undergraduate that I learned to be the professional Mary Kay could be and will continue to be for a population of children whose educational needs are largely overlooked.”

Barton College is excited to officially announce the recent gift of a commissioned Bronze Bulldog, which has been installed near the Centennial Alumni Bell Tower as part of the West Entrance of the College.

The bronze statue is formidable and represents the same strength and resiliency found in both our academic programs and intercollegiate athletic competition.

The Bronze Bulldog is dedicated in memory of Marvin Coghill and Dale Bone. Carolyn Harmon led the fundraising for this gift, with contributors including Genia Bone, Anne Coghill, Eastern Pride, Courtenay and Shelton Griffin, Carolyn Harmon, Susan and Norval Kneten, Charlotte and George Newsome, Janet and Al Rehm, A.D. F. Michael Hughes, ’72, has retired after teaching 23 years at Wake Technical Community College.

Deborah Lacher Griffin, ’75, and her husband have moved back to North Carolina from Florida. Debby is retired from teaching art in elementary and middle schools, and her husband, Bob, is an assistant principal. They have four grown children and one grandchild.

James Butler Spivey, Jr., ’75, has been named to the position of senior manager for business intelligence development at Remington Outdoor Company in Madison. Jim and his wife, Cherie, live in Martinsville, Va. They have one son, Steven, who recently joined Wake Forest Baptist Health as a family medicine physician.

John S. Joyner, ’76, is retiring after 40 years with the Wilson County Schools. John has served as principal of Lucama Elementary School for the last 19 years.

Donna Marino Brown, ’78, lives in Midlothian, Va., and is a teacher for children with learning disabilities with the Chesterfield County Public Schools. Donna is married to Allen Robert Brown and has a daughter, Melissa, who is a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University. Donna is also a female vocalist for the River City Party Band.

Sheila Gaye Golden, ’78, retired from Dominion Virginia/ North Carolina Power on April 1, 2010. Sheila now has a fun job working part time at Roanoke Island Festival Park where the Elizabeth II is located. She invites her friends and classmates to come by and say hello.

Susan Johnson Hines, ’80, and her husband, Tony, moved closer to Greensboro in the summer of 2014. They had been living in Raleigh for seven years to be close to her mother.

Susan’s mother passed in January 2014, and they were ready to move closer to their children and out of the big city traffic.

They live in a wonderful small town named Mayodan. They have six grandchildren ranging in age from 20 years to five months.

Peggy Nicholls Ziglar, ’55 and her husband, Richard V. Ziglar, ’56 of Tulsa Okla. with Lyn Mayo Gurganus, ’65 and her husband, Ralph H. Gurganus, ’64 of Bartlesville, Okla., shared a trip to Norway from April 27-May 11, 2016. The photograph was taken at the border of Norway and Russia on May 5, 2016. It was a good two-week reunion of A.C.C. grads!

Gerald Haywood Quinn, Sr., ’59, was recognized by Campbell University in October 2015 with a Distinguished Alumni Award. He was honored for outstanding leadership and service to Campbell University. Gerald is retired president of Quinn Wholesale Company, which he owned and operated with his brothers. He has held many positions on boards and committees, including the Board of Trustees of Atlantic Christian College. He also served on the Morehead Selection Committee, the Investment Committee for the N.C. 4-H Foundation, Duplin County’s Board of Commissioners. And, he served on the Board of Trustees of the N.C. Baptist Hospital. Among the awards he has received are the North Carolina Heritage Award and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He and his wife, Rita, live in Kenansville.

They have two children and three grandchildren.

Carla Hollowell Massengill, ’80, retired from Wayne County Public Schools as a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing on June 30, 2016, after 32 years in education. She helped to start the deaf and hard of hearing program for students in 1984 in Wayne County. During her tenure, Carla had the opportunity to mentor 27 Barton student teachers in the deaf and hard of hearing program. Carla and her husband, Mike, reside in Goldsboro. Their son, Stalen, is a senior at Rosewood High School and daughter, Connor Langston Keeter, is a high school counselor at Heide-Trask High School in Pender County.

Alyce Monshower Singletary, ’80, was recently licensed as a local licensed pastor in the N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church. Alyce has been assigned as an associate pastor at Person Street United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

William Rex Hodge, ’83, and Cindy Whitford Hodge, ’92, have been married for 32 years. Rex has been a senior Java developer with the North Carolina Administrative Offices of the Courts for 15 years. Cindy has been a business manager with Clapp Research Group for 23 years. They live in Rolesville and are the proud parents of two daughters, Jordan and Lauren, and son-in-law Dylan.

William F. Ferguson, Jr. ’84, has been promoted to the rank of assistant chief of police at the Port Richey Police Department located in Port Richey, Fla.

Angela Denise Pope, ’86, was awarded a Ph.D. in Organization and Management with a specialization in information technology management on March 31, 2014.

Sarah Hodges Stalls, ’91, married Robert Mack Stalls on October, 3, 2015. Sarah is the technology facilitator and media center manager of S.W. Snowden Elementary School in Aurora. She also works as a free-lance writer and photographer. Robert recently retired as a surveyor for the NCDOT. The couple lives in the Farm Life community of Martin County.

Thomas Joyner, ’94, graduated in May 2016 from Liberty University with a Master of Science degree in Accounting.

Clark Jenkins, ’96, served as chairman of the board for the 30th Annual North Carolina Seafood Festival in 2016. This is the largest festival in the state of North Carolina.

Monica C. Mills, ’97, has assumed duties as the boys’ head soccer coach at Community Christian School in Wilson.

A. Roy Henderson III, ’98, is currently the lead administrator at Community Christian School in Wilson. Roy began his new position in July 2016.

Nicole Davis Hunt, ’02, is in her 15th year as a teacher at New Hope Elementary School in Wilson County. She and her husband have two daughters: Braeden, a third grader, and Kinsley, born on January 19, 2016.

Matthew Whitley, ’02, was named top commercial banker by the CEO of Southern Bank. Matt is senior vice president and Wilson city executive for Southern Bank.

Jenna Gregory Hatfield, ’06, and husband, Justin, welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Stella Isolan Hatfield, on April 12, 2016.

Tiphanie oversees two programs, the volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) and teen employment mentoring program (TEMP).

Courtney Elizabeth Bunch, ’08, has served as a certified athletic trainer at Currituck County High School for seven years and is teaching two sports medicine classes. She received Currituck County Schools’ First-Year Teacher of the Year Award in 2009-2010. Courtney was selected by the N.C. Coaches Association to be the athletic trainer for East West All-Star Games in Greensboro for the past six years and also served North-South All-Star basketball Games in Myrtle Beach for five years.

Omar Bashi, ’11, has graduated from the Charlotte School of Law.

Summer Poythress Cline, ’09, and husband, Drew, announce the birth of their second son, Maddox Andrew, born on July 20, 2015.

Catherine Danielle Okafor ’13 has been working in college counseling, and, throughout her post-college journey, it has taken her to Texas, Massachusetts, and finally to California.

She works as the college access program coordinator at an educational non-profit in the city. She counsels and teaches college prep classes to high school students. Catherine never shies away from telling her students about her college experience at Barton College. Her stories include beginning the Women and Gender Studies Club, WISE Girls, writing for “The Collegiate,” and cheering on the men’s and women’s basketball teams at every home game. She also shares random facts that she remembers learning while working as a student ambassador. Catherine has too much Bulldog pride to keep it all in!

John “Allen” Corbett III, ’09, has been promoted by Southern Bank. Allen is now a vice president and commercial lender with Southern Bank in Rocky Mount.

Justin Alan Packer, ’10, received his long white coat on May 20, 2016, an accomplishment he earned after 28 long months of Physician Assistant (PA) School at Eastern Virginia Medical School. After departing the Norfolk Marriott reception celebration, he could hardly believe his eyes because parked in the middle of the road was a Barton College travel bus! What a wonderful reminder of how small steps can lead to big accomplishments. While at Barton College, Justin discovered athletic training and dove in head first. After working two years in a PT clinic, he decided to apply for PA School. Seeing this bus on that special day was a

Heather McKeel Hughes, ’11, married John Taylor Hughes on July 16, 2016. She and her husband will move to Shelby in the fall of 2017, where she hopes to work in the pediatric field at Carolinas Health Care System. After graduating from Barton in 2011, Heather entered an associate’s degree program and will be graduating with her RN in May 2017.
