LaDonna Chancellor Prepared to Guide BPS into the Future

On July 1, LaDonna Chancellor became the next superintendent of Bartlesville Public Schools, stepping into a role that reflects nearly three decades of dedication to education and a deep connection to the community she now calls home.

Chancellor follows retiring Superintendent Chuck McCauley, who led the district for the past 10 years. For Chancellor, the transition is both exciting and deeply personal. After 28 years in education and nearly two decades in Bartlesville, she sees the opportunity not as a departure from her life’s work but as a continuation of it.

A native of Dallas, Chancellor moved to the Claremore area when she was 12 after her father, who worked for American Airlines, was transferred to Oklahoma. She graduated from high school in Claremore, but her path to higher education was not a traditional one.

“I didn’t go to college right out of high school,” she said. “I went to work and started a family. I worked in an abstract office doing title work and realized I needed a career, not just a job.

I had always known that if I went to college, I wanted to be a teacher.”

With the support of her husband, Tracy, she returned to school, earning a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern State University and later a master’s degree from Southern Nazarene University.

Her career began as a special education teacher at Catoosa High School, where she taught from 1997 to 2004 before becoming assistant principal. The students she served left a lasting impression.

“My students were all going to be independent adults,” she said. “They just needed extra support in the regular classroom.

What I tried to help them do was be ready.”

After several years in the classroom, she saw an opportunity to expand her impact.

“After a few years, I decided that if I was an administrator, I could have more influence than just the students in my classroom,” she said.

That next step brought her to Bartlesville in June 2007 when she was hired as principal of Central Middle School. At the time, Chancellor knew little about the community. Encouraged by 8

colleagues and educational leaders she respected, she began researching the district and quickly realized “this is obviously a great school district, I think I’m going to check this out.”

She was hired as principal and immediately recognized something special.

“I was blown away by the great people I was getting to work with,” she said. “The teachers, the staff, the office staff, the administrators. Not just at Central but throughout the district.”

Coming from a smaller school system, she appreciated the opportunities for collaboration that a larger district provided. Yet it was the community itself that made the strongest impression.

“The community was so supportive. Parents were so involved and engaged with the school system,” she said. “I immediately thought, ‘Wow, this is a special place.’”

For four years, Chancellor made the daily drive from Claremore to Bartlesville. Shortly before accepting the position, her family had completed construction of what she called her “dream house,” making relocation difficult. So, she accepted a position closer to home, but eventually, Bartlesville’s pull proved stronger. After spending a year as principal at Sequoyah’s MidHigh School, Chancellor realized how much she missed the district and community she had come to love.

“While I was gone, I realized how special this community is,” she recalled. “I missed the community, but I also missed the people I got to work with.”

When Bartlesville High School Principal Terry Bryant announced her retirement, Chancellor applied for the position and returned to the district. This time, she stayed.

As principal of Bartlesville High School, Chancellor spent

10 years helping guide one of the most significant transitions in the school’s history. When she arrived, the district still operated separate high school and midhigh campuses. During her tenure, voters approved a bond issue that allowed the district to expand the high school and consolidate grades 9 through 12 into a single campus. The challenge extended beyond construction projects and logistics.

“I spent well over a year working on that transition,” she said. “We had to bring two staffs and two different identities together to become one staff.”

The successful merger created the unified high school campus students know today and provided Chancellor with invaluable experience in change management, collaboration and strategic planning.

In 2022, she moved into district leadership as Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, overseeing school improvement efforts across Bartlesville Public Schools. That broader perspective helped prepare her for what would come next.

For years, Chancellor assumed she and McCauley would retire at roughly the same time. Then he told her he was considering retirement, her reaction was immediate. “ I was just like, ‘What are you talking about? Why?’” Then came another question.

“He said, ‘Would you want to be the next superintendent?’”

Chancellor surprised herself with her answer.

“I said yes before I even stopped to think about it,” she recalled. “When I look back at that, that’s a really big decision to immediately be like, ‘Well yes.’”

Today, she describes herself as “honored and excited and all of the things” that come with preparing for the district’s top leadership role. The moment became even more meaningful during the December board meeting when her appointment was made official.

A reporter asked about becoming the first female superintendent in BPS history. The question caught her off guard. As she considered her answer, she looked across the room and saw three familiar faces. Her husband had secretly invited their three adult daughters to attend the meeting.

“When he asked me that question, I looked at my girls, and I was just overwhelmed,” Chancellor said. “I’m proud for them to be here to see that I’ve accomplished this. I’ve always wanted them to think that whatever they thought they could achieve, all you’ve got to do is work hard and you can make it happen. I hope I’ve shown them that as a mom.”

At the heart of that vision is a simple goal: preparing every student for life after graduation.

“I want us to continue to be seen as a district of excellence,” Chancellor said.

Whether students choose college, technical training or immediate entry into the workforce, she wants them to leave Bartlesville prepared.

“Our college-bound kids, I want them to be as well prepared for college as you can be,” she said.

“If you’re not going to college, I want us to provide opportunities to prepare you for a workforce that’s local here where you can be successful.”

Ultimately, she believes education opens doors that can transform lives. In her office sits a sign that reflects her philosophy and states “Education offers freedom and opportunity. Ignorance offers captivity and oppression.”

It is a message she carries into her work every day.

“I believe our teachers are, for a lot of kids, their best hope at a bright future,” she said. “That’s what we do every day. We give kids hope for a better future.”

Chancellor’s commitment to Bartlesville extends beyond the school district. She serves on the boards of the Bartlesville Regional United Way, Richard Kane YMCA and Arvest, coordinates programs for Bartlesville Education Promise, completed Leadership Bartlesville Class XXX and previously served as president of Bartlesville Daybreak Rotary.

Outside of work, she enjoys reading, fishing and spending time with her family, including five grandchildren ranging in age from 2½ to 13. She is also an avid runner, and she loves the Pathfinder.

“I never ran a full mile until I was in my 30s,” she said with a laugh.

Today, she has completed roughly a dozen half-marathons and participates in several 5K races each year. Running, she said, provides balance.

“There’s something about when you do a stressful job that running helps you mentally release all of it,” she added.

Nearly 20 years after arriving as a middle school principal, Chancellor still describes Bartlesville with the same words that first came to mind in 2007.

“This is a special place.”

As superintendent, Chancellor plans to work closely with McCauley to ensure a smooth transition. Her first months included a comprehensive 100-day transition plan focused on listening, learning and building a roadmap for the future. A Forever Friend . . . In Barbara Garrison

In 2007, I was invited to participate in the creation of the “Family Histories of Washington County,” an Oklahoma Centennial book project originating at the Bartlesville Area History Museum, where I met a committee of local historians, among them was the effervescent and vibrant Barbara Hopper Garrison. She knew everyone in town and all their history too.

But she came by it honestly…

The Hopper family roots were planted when Alfred “A.A.” Hopper arrived in Bartlesville in 1926. Alfred married Miss Marie Foster and the family grew with daughters, Barbara and Emily. Barbara Lee Hopper was born at Bartlesville’s Memorial Hospital on October 18, 1931, and she attended McKinley Elementary, Central Middle and College-High Schools; she graduated with the class of 1949 with her forever friend, Arthur Paul Gorman. She was a life-long member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where she was christened as a child and married Denzil “Denny” Garrison on April 3, 1954.

Barbara and Denny met at college; Barbara was in the University of Oklahoma Tri Delta sorority and Denny was graduating O.U. law school. He gave her a ride in his “sporty new white Ford coupe” and their friendship blossomed. After their marriage, Barbara set her education aside to raise their five children: Chuck, Ellen, Kathryn, Elizabeth and Martha. However, even with babies at her feet, she managed to earn her degree and became heavily involved in Bartlesville civic activities, local history and genealogy… everyone’s genealogy.

In 2012, Vicki Stewart, Barbara and I wrote “If Bartlesville Walls Could Talk,” which tells the history of Bartlesville and the architects and families who built local homes.

And, Barbara proudly titled our trio as the

Denny and Barbara have been life-time Oklahoma and Bartlesville supporters in everything they touched. They have instilled the love of God and country in their children by example. Denny served as Washington County Attorney, Oklahoma State Representative and Senator with Barbara as his best friend and key supporter. In 2014, the Garrison’s were prestigiously recognized as the Bartlesville Community Foundation’s Legacy Hall of Fame family.

Denny Garrison’s family fought in the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. Denny’s father, Joseph Sr., achieved the rank of Colonel of Infantry during WWII. Then, Denny and his brother, Joseph Jr., both served in WWII and Korea; Joseph Jr. became a Lt. Colonel and Denny became a Major. With this military background, it was natural that Denny and Barbara’s son, Charles “Chuck” Garrison, several grandsons and son-inlaws all served; many becoming army officers as well. Barbara proudly bragged that two of these outstanding gentlemen also graduated from West Point.

We all leave a legacy, some accomplishments are grander offerings than others; some gifts are silent, barely receiving recognition. However, in the hours and moments before the angel escorts arrive, it is the memories that carry us home with a gently grin upon our face, a song on our lips, and comfort in the hearts of those we leave behind.

Barbara’s gone to the luscious garden in the sky, where she can dance freely and sing “I Left My Heart at the Stage Door Canteen” to her heart’s content. Barbara, thank you for the memories and for instilling the drive in me to become a “history hoarder.” Your forever friend.

The Gift of Goff

Art is Where You Find It; A Look at Unique Architecture

by Debbie Neece I once had a friend who claimed “art is where you find it.” In spite of the fact Gary Gibson is no longer here, I often ponder that quote. Bartlesville has been blessed by a host of worldrenown architects who left us art in the form of structure; most notable, Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Alonzo Goff. Each of these men held their own unique style of architecture and left a continued footprint upon Oklahoma.

Bruce Goff was Kansas born, June 8, 1904; a birthdate shared with famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, only 37 years after Wright’s 1867 birthyear. The Goff family lived in Kansas, Colorado and Oklahoma; finally settling in Tulsa in 1914. Bruce was an artistic child; drawing on any paper product available. He became a self-taught architect, brilliant storyteller, enlightening teacher, prolific artist in paint and music; however, soft spoken, inspiring and humble before men. Kind of a grandfatherly type of man.

Following the work of Bruce Goff is a simple task. At the young age of 12, his father apprenticed Bruce to work in the Tulsa architectural firm of Rush, Endacott and Rush in downtown Tulsa. Although there were some doubting Thomas’ during his early career, Goff’s first realized works were in 1919 at the age of just 15.

From 1919-1932, his work was concentrated around Tulsa, with projects sprinkled else where. In 1929, he became a partner at Rush, Endacott and Rush. From 1934-1941, his work was in the states of SD, OH, MI, MA and IL, although most were unrealized designs. His hands were ever busy. During his WWII military service (1942-1945), he left his mark in the Aleutian Islands and at Camp Parks, California where he fashioned Quonset huts into 28

the McCann Memorial Chapel. It was not until 1947 that he found himself back in Norman, Oklahoma, designing the Ledbetter House and the Hopewell Baptist Church in Edmond.

Between 1947-1955, he became a Professor of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma and served as the chairman of the School of Architecture. His teaching style was deliberately inspiring…his goal was to inspire students to inspire creativity in each other.

Bartlesville’s Joe Price was an O.U. electrical engineer student and found Goff’s architectural classes intriguing so he became a student squatter of sorts, sitting in on Goff lectures.

This engagement became the basis of a long architectural relationship. In 1956, Goff left O.U. and established his two-story apartment at the Price Tower, where he remained through 1964.

That is when The Gift of Goff began for northeastern Oklahoma…

1957 – Comer House: 1316 N. Creek, Dewey, OK, singlestory, 2-bed/2-bath, 1,484 sq.ft.

NOW YOU KNOW Cecil A. Comer was a Dewey insurance agent who desired a unique dwelling amidst his neighborhood of small bungalows.

The geometrically diverse façade and organic interior design incorporates a heptagonal main room, pentagonal bedrooms, and hexagonal bathrooms. The open floor plan has a central fireplace serving both the living room and recreation room; bifold doors allow spaces to be separated from the rest of the home; blonde brick exterior with a red roof and façade accents of seafoam green which continue to the double entry front door with geometric triangle design.

Bluestem Foundry’s Calvin Mason was the general contractor.

He was familiar with Frank Lloyd Wright and Bruce Goff. He worked with Wright during the Price Tower construction, so he was not a stranger to H.C. Price either. Comer was also Mason’s good friend and insurance agent. This four-way connection was the impetus for Mason becoming the general contractor for the Joe Price Studio, Shin’enKan. Mr. Comer died in 1992. In 2012, Cynthia Naylor purchased the home and executed extensive restorations. In 2015, with the help of the Oklahoma Historical Society, the Comer House was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

1957 – Shin’enKan: Price Family’s Starview Estate, intersection of Price Road and Silver Lake Road.

Goff’s mastery was on full display when he designed Shin’enKan, the “House of the Faraway Heart.” Goff was a creative genius, known for incorporating odd materials into his organic architecture and one-of-a-kind structures.

To say this home was unconventional would be an understatement. Beyond the “triangular geometric design,” Goff incorporated Woolworth ten-cent ashtrays, black coal, blue-green glass cullet from the Sapulpa Liberty Glass Factory, hand-glued goose feathers covered ceilings, and gold and platinum-plated mosaic tiles in his mixture of colors, patterns and textures. Shin’enKan became Goff’s grand adventure, where he poured his maximum creativity into an evolving structure. What originally served as Joe Price’s bachelor pad/studio was reenvisioned once Joe married Etsuko (1966) and again when children arrived (1974), before an arsonist destroyed the structure December 26, 1996.

1957 Miller Brothers Gas Station: 21st Street and State Highway 60 & 99, Pawhuska Although the original highway has been re-routed and the original gas station has served many duties, this was byfar the most out-of-the-box structure Goff designed. Combining

three Butler corrugated-metal grain bins, this structure has been a gas station with tire sales, Strike Axe Trading Post and Smoke Shop (1991ish) and a place where a fifteen-year-old could work for summer cash and be impressed by a “Dukes of Hazzard General Lee” car that stopped by for service and a tire smokin’ exit. Its present state is non-functional.

1957 Motsenbocker House: 2416 Circle Drive, Country Club Terrace Addition, two-level, 3-bed/3.5-bath, 4,091 sq.ft.

Known by friends and clients as “BG,” Bruce Goff homes forever carry the names of the original home owner. Goff wrapped a high level of uniqueness and personalization into each organic, yet artistic, design. No two alike. Therefore, the crescent-shaped Motsenbocker House built in 1957 for James and Mary Motsenbocker and occupied by the family until 1971 was solely designed for them and although there have been nine additional residents; the home is still recognized as the Motsenbocker House.

1958 Jones House: 3411 SE Wildwood Court, Woodland Park, split-level, 2-bed/3-bath, 2,464 sq.ft.

Howard and Lucille Jones built this brick and wood clad home for their retirement and a place for Lucille to showcase her glassware collection. Goff delivered “overlapping octagons around a four-sided fireplace with hearths in the living, dining and kitchen.” He also incorporated accordion partitions as room separations with plenty of deep window sills to exhibit the glassware. Howard died in 1971 and Lucille followed him in 1994.

Became the home of David and Rosalee Taylor 1998-present.

1958 White House: 1525 SW Whiteway Court, Woodland Park Addition, one-level, 4-bed/3.5-bath, 4,035 sq.ft.

NOW YOU KNOW Robert White was a division manager for the H.C. Price Company (1948-1956), V-President (1957-1967) and President (1968-1977 retirement). This sprawling mid-century modern home was designed in 1958 and occupied by Robert and Judith White, 1959-1979; Robert and Gale Kane, 1980-2004; Scott and Jennifer McKissick, 2006-2011; Jon and Betsy Martens, 20122019; current owners, Kalan and Brandi Powers.

The home has a bank of patio windows overlooking a 7.68acre lot of gorgeous landscape. True to Goff style, the ceilings are wood tongue-and-grove to add warmth, bi-fold doors offer office separation from the living areas, and a large kitchen with eat-in dining.

In 1958, the Redeemer Lutheran Church purchased five acres just inside the Highway 75 Woodland Park entrance to build their Education Building. This two-story rectangular building exemplifies the heart of Goff’s architectural style. The exterior walls are clad with limestone veneer and blue-green glass cullet decoratively tucked into the façade; tinted windows placed at a 45-degree angle; and interior walls decorated with intricately placed diamond shaped glass mosaic tiles. Building was dedicated December 1961 and continues to serve.

1961 John Quincy and Hazel Adams House: 108 Fairmont Road, Vinita, 4-bed/2-bath, 3,724 sq.ft.

1959 Akright House Remodel: 2412 SE Circle Dr., one-level, 3-bed/2.5-bath, 3,473 sq.ft.

Jim Akright was employed at Phillips Petroleum. He and Elizabeth built their mid-century ranch home in 1951; and in 1959, Goff was commissioned to remodel the home with a large party room. He incorporated his signature aqua-colored glass ashtrays into wall panels and created a “special architectural gift of light.” The family enjoyed the home for 55 years, passing it to new owners in 2006.

Not to be confused with John Quincy Adams the president, this home was designed for Oklahoma’s 12th District Judge and owner of Vinita’s KVIN radio station. The round Adams house has a fossil imbedded stone façade wrapped around a circular floor plan with a large sunken “conversation pit” and fireplace in the center. Sky-lights illuminate the chimney; accordion doors serve as walls; ceilings are wood tongue-and-groove; exterior doors and windows are triangular insets; all supported by a steel frame extended from the center fireplace.

1959 Collins House: 3400 SE Wildwood Ct., Woodland Park Addition, tri-level, 4-bed/2-bath, 2,619 sq.ft.

Built for the Russell Collins family in 1959, this home has welcomed five families, yet has retained the architectural footprint of Goff down to its original cabinetry, vintage electric stove, accordion doors, cork flooring, clerestory ribbon windows and copper flashings. The beautifully landscaped wooded surroundings offer constant deer visitation.

This was the Betty J. McFarland home for forty-four years.

James and Marian Fitchette were married at Bartlesville in 1947. James was employed with the Phillips Petroleum Company’s Corporate Advertising Department. Marian was a pianist and member of the Musical Research Society. They enjoyed their Goff designed home from 1965-1986; Bernard and Lenore Anderson, 1987-1997; Richard and Estalene Serr 19982002; Richard Townsend 2004-2006; and Martin and Eliose Needleman 2008-present.

1962 Bennett House: 2841 Silver Lake Road, split-level, 3-bed/2.5-bath, 2,660 sq.ft.

Richard Bennett was a 1940 ColHigh graduate, received his Industrial Engineering degree at OSU; then, worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 35 years, where he secured 27 patents. Joanne Riney was locally wellknown as our County Commissioner.

The couple were married 69 years before Joanne passed away in 2017.

Their L-shaped Goff designed home is tucked into 8-acres of secluded wilderness and wildlife; accessible via a private drive. Although both Richard and Joanne are deceased, the home remains in the family care.

1963 Sooner Park Play Tower: 420 SE Madison Blvd., Bartlesville’s 53-acre city park Mrs. H.C. Price commissioned Bruce Goff to design a children’s Play Tower. Scott and Hill fabricators created the spiral staircase tower and paraded the 50-foot-tall structure down Frank Phillips Blvd. to Sooner Park where guy wires anchored the tower solid.

At the foot of the tower was a sand pit and six-foot high Möbius crawling toy. Father time was hard on the tower, requiring the structure to be padlocked for repairs several times before a careless driver nearly destroyed the tower forever in 2008. Facing the scrapyard, Bartlesville History Heroes stepped forward to save the Play Tower. The City of Bartlesville, Phillips 66, Kumar Krishnan of the Bartlesville-based Service and Mechanical Corporation, Ambler Architects and a host of community donors, partnered to restore the Play Tower. October 2014, the Play Tower repeated its trek down Frank Phillips Blvd. to Sooner Park to live on another 50 years.

Bruce Goff created more than 500 building designs; however, only about a quarter were realized. Goff has eleven structures recognized on the National Registry of Historic Places, including the Comer and Adams Houses.

He died in Tyler, Texas, on August 4, 1982, at the age of 78 and his grave marker is quintessentially Goff: futuristic, weathered green with a glass cullet imbedded, salvaged from the remains of Shin’enKan, Joe Price’s “House of the Faraway Heart.”

Lucy Rybka

... And How Pearl Harbor Shaped Her Life

Lucy Rybka was born 21 April 1921 at Hallwell, Kansas.

The family lived on a farm and she and her two sisters each milked six cows before school and repeated the process after school. Lucy rode the binder during wheat harvest, helped stack the bundles, cleaned the cream separator and plowed with a riding plow.

Her first school was Globe, a one-room school, and all eight grades were in the one room. Her grandfather bought a pony named Old Babe and the three girls rode the pony to school. Once the girls arrived at school, they would turn Old Babe loose and she made her way back home; then, at 4:00 p.m., their mother put the bridle on Old Babe and the horse went to the school and brought the girls home. An early day taxi service.

Lucy graduated from Columbus High School in 1940. At that time, her mother’s health was poor so her father sold the farm and the family moved to Oswego. She was in a movie theater watching State Fair with Will Rogers when the attack on Pearl Harbor was announced.

After the war started, she helped with the scrap metal and rubber drives, and saved bacon grease for the war effort.

Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she applied for a job at the Sunshine Ordnance Works in Parsons, Kansas, and began working after passing her background check. Her first job at the plant was making the boosters for 75 mm shells.

The booster was in a small cup that had two springs and when the springs were moved, the firing pin moved and set the powder off. She was transferred from the booster line to where the shells were assembled. She put the booster and nosecone on the shell; then, they were put in tubes and tied together. She was then sent to an area named 912, where the TNT was poured into the shell casings. The TNT was hot when it was poured in the casing and the bubbles were worked out. If there was a bubble in the TNT, the shell would not hit the target. Before working with the TNT, all

the workers had to take off their clothes, put them in a locker and put on clothes provided by the plant. They then had to go through an inspection to make sure they had no hairpins or other loose items that may fall into the TNT. She said a hairpin would prevent the shell from hitting the target. After her workday was over, she took off the plant clothes and turned them in, received a set for the next day, and put them in her locker. She then had to take a shower and the water ran off her like blood from the TNT. She said the TNT turned her hair red and whiskers on the men were turned red.

She then put on her clothes and went home.

From 912, she was sent to the Rework Bay. A setscrew held the booster in the shell so it wouldn’t move; if a setscrew didn’t fit right, it was sent to the Rework Bay. The bay was a tenfoot square room, made of reinforced concrete.

There was wall between Lucy and the shell she was working on. She made a small hole where she removed the setscrew. If not done properly, the shell might explode in the small room.

The shell was then returned for a new setscrew. The last area she worked was putting the pallets stacked with shells into a boxcar. She worked at Sunshine until the war was over; then, she came to Bartlesville on V-J Day and applied for a job with Phillips. She was hired and worked in the Comptroller’s office and retired in 1985.

SEK Garage Doors . . . Built on Faith, Family, and Service

What started as a difficult and unexpected turning point became the foundation for a business built on faith, family and service for Jason Williams, owner of SEK Garage Doors and Wall Builders.

Founded in 2013, SEK Garage Doors has grown into far more than a garage door company. Serving Bartlesville and surrounding communities, the business now offers residential and commercial garage door installation and repair, gate systems, metal buildings, handyman services and full construction projects from the ground up.

“We can build a garage completely from start to finish,” Williams said. “Foundation, framing, metal, windows, doors, roofing, all of it.”

Through Wall Builders, Williams and his team also handle shops, barns, fencing, welding projects, Sheetrock repair, concrete overlays, walk doors and general repair work for homeowners and businesses.

But for Williams, the company’s mission has always gone beyond the work itself. “The business was started on biblical principles,” Williams said. “I had given my life to Christ and placed my life in His hands. Three days later, I was asked to leave the family business where I had worked for almost 10 years. God has opened so many doors for me since then.”

Williams said the experience reshaped his outlook completely.

“I vowed that I would do whatever He led me to do and do it for His glory,” he said. “This business is a ministry first and my living second.”

That mindset is something customers quickly notice.

Williams emphasizes communication, dependability and personal relationships as the backbone of the company’s success. “I don’t just treat people like customers,” he said. “I treat them like friends and family.”

That philosophy has helped SEK Garage Doors build a strong reputation throughout smaller communities across northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas, where word-ofmouth recommendations still matter. “I love serving smaller communities because people tell people about you,” Williams said. “You see customers at local stores and get to say hello.

Building relationships is what it’s about.”

SEK Garage Doors handles everything from broken springs and damaged cables to full commercial installations and specialty projects. Williams said many calls involve doors that were improperly installed or simply haven’t been serviced over time.

“Some of the most common repairs are broken springs,

broken cables or doors that don’t run smoothly because they’ve never been serviced,” he explained. “A lot of times they just need serious adjustments.”

The company also tackles projects many others avoid.

One recent job involved installing a massive door system nearly 30 feet in the air inside a cement batch plant’s gravel and sand mixing tanks.

“They called me because other people said it couldn’t be done,” Williams said. “I love challenges.”

In another project, SEK Garage Doors framed a large steel opening and installed a custom garage door system that will eventually be finished with metal sheeting. The company also installs bifold doors for airplanes and large farm equipment, builds gated entrances and pipe fencing, and provides welding services for agricultural and commercial customers.

“We do commercial and residential work,” Williams said. “If somebody needs a garage built, a shop framed, a fence repaired or handyman work done, we can usually help.”

Family also plays a major role in the business. Williams’ wife, Jennifer, and their oldest son, Jackson, currently help with operations alongside several employees, including newer hire Ray Wilson and a few Amish workers who assist with projects.

Their second-oldest son, Jenson, is also expected to begin working with the business this fall.

Outside of work, the Williams family stays deeply involved in church and community life. Jennifer homeschools their five children, while Jason serves as head of maintenance at their church, teaches children’s church several times a year and leads evangelism classes twice annually.

The family also maintains a busy farm life filled with cattle, sheep, horses, chickens, cats and dogs.

For Williams, balancing faith, family and business is simply part of the calling. “My family says I know everyone, or at least I act like I do,” he joked.

That approachable personality, combined with around-theclock customer care, has helped the company stand apart in an industry where service often stops after business hours. “We are different because we care even after hours,” Williams said. “A lot of times I can help resolve the problem temporarily until I can get there.”

More than a decade after opening its doors, SEK Garage Doors continues to grow through the relationships it has built one customer at a time.

“I have built the business on dependability, customer service and biblical principles,” Williams said. “Christ is my life.”

Looking Back at Becky Hobbs

by Kay Little, Little History Adventures Probably the most famous student to graduate in the first Sooner High graduation in 1967 was Becky Hobbs.

Becky was born January 24, 1950 in Bartlesville. She grew up listening to Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Jimmie Rodgers, Elvis, Ricky Nelson, and Jerry Lee Lewis, just to name a few.

When she was eight years old, her father took her to a Jerry Lee Lewis concert at the Bartlesville Civic Center. Jerry Lee was her favorite entertainer of all time.

When Becky was nine years old, she started playing piano and composing songs. She also learned to play the acoustic and electric guitar, as well as the accordion. In the Fifth grade, she wrote in her diary, “My name is Rebecca Ann Hobbs. I am in the 5th grade. I am a songwriter.” She knew even then what she was. She even formed her own allgirl band, Four Faces of Eve, while in high school. This was the first all-female rock band in Oklahoma. During that time, she enjoyed the British Invasion, especially the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Because of this, she received an electric guitar, microphone and amp for Christmas, after begging her parents. She was heavily influenced by many of the Oklahoma musicians.

One fun story about Becky happened when she was nine years old and learning to play the piano. Her older sister was

also learning to play. When the girls got home after school, they would fight over who got to play the piano. Becky would fight off her sister with a Baptist Hymnal and even though she was younger, she won.

Becky attended Col-Hi as a sophomore and when Sooner High opened in 1965 with only 10-11th grades, she attended as a junior. The next school year, 1966-1967, she was in the first Senior class of Sooner. This July, she will be a part of the Sooner and Col-Hi reunion.

Becky never thought she would be a solo artist.

She liked being a “chick singer” in a band. But music producers had other ideas. They liked her southern whiskey voice. Becky and her musician husband, Duane Sciacqua, live in Nashville, but she always carries Oklahoma with her wherever she is.

Christmas 1995 was a turning point in her life.

She had been getting premonitions that she was going to be in a bad wreck. On January 25, 1986, she and her band were involved in a very bad wreck. They all came very close to dying. She later felt that the voice that was warning her was her guardian angel. The hit song, “Angels Among Us” came from that experience.

She has had many hits through the years, but her proudest achievement has been the musical, “Nanyehi,” written about Becky’s 5th great-grandmother, Nancy Ward, beloved woman of the Cherokee.

She co-wrote with Nick Sweet, who she met in Bartlesville in 2007 when they were performing at the Oklahoma Centennial show written

by Nick. If you ever get a chance to see Nanyehi, see it!

Becky continues to write music and perform. In her eclectic style, you can hear the influences of honky-tonk, country, rock and ballad. Good job, Beckaroo!

When the Future Becomes the Past

I know life goes by fast because I blinked and thirty years were gone.

A few mornings ago, I was sitting on the front steps of my house drinking a cup of coffee. The gentle sunshine was beginning to warm the day. A soft summer breeze was blowing. The birds were singing their songs.

It was one of those quiet moments before the busyness of the day begins.

And suddenly, I was transported back to another morning.

A morning when my children were small.

A morning when I was praying about the future. A morning when I was just beginning my career.

Back then, I had dreams, plans, goals, responsibilities, and a future that seemed far away. Like most young parents, I worried about providing for my family. I worried about making good decisions. I worried about whether I would become the husband, father, and leader I hoped to be.

The future I was praying about had become my past.

I can still remember those summer mornings like they were yesterday.

The strange thing is that yesterday was more than thirty years ago.

I remember sitting outside before the kids woke up, enjoying the same summer breeze and listening to the same birds sing. I remember mornings when they would come running outside ready to jump into the pool. I remember bike rides on summer mornings. Family vacations. Laughter around the dinner table.

At the time, those moments felt ordinary.

Today, they feel priceless.

Back then, I thought the important moments were still somewhere in the future. I thought they were connected to goals I hadn’t reached or dreams I hadn’t accomplished.

Looking back now, I realize the important moments were happening all along.

They were hidden inside ordinary days. The family dinners.

The summer vacations. The bike rides. The cups of coffee on a summer morning.

One day, without realizing it, my children took their last bike ride as kids.

One day, they jumped into the pool for the last time before moving into the next season of life.

One day, a family vacation happened that would become a cherished memory.

The truth is, most of life feels ordinary while we’re living it.

That’s why we miss it.

We live in the greatest country on earth, and this year our nation celebrates 250 years of freedom. For generations, Americans have worked hard, raised families, built businesses, served communities, and pursued dreams.

We celebrate the freedom to build a life.

But there is one thing none of us are free from.

The passing of time. Children grow up.

We all grow older. Seasons come and go.

Life moves forward whether we’re paying attention or not.

Let that be an invitation. An invitation to notice the life we’re living while we’re living it.

Last year, I was reminded of that in a way I’ll never forget.

One moment I was skiing with family in the mountains. The next, I was fighting for my life. By God’s grace, I was given more time.

That experience didn’t teach me something new.

It simply reminded me of something I already knew.

The moments that matter most are the ones happening now.

The older I get, the more I appreciate those things.

A morning cup of coffee. A summer breeze. The birds singing their songs. A conversation with someone you love.

Time with children and grandchildren. The beauty of the community where you live.

These things may seem small, but they become the memories that stay with us long after bigger accomplishments have faded.

As I sat there that morning listening to the birds and feeling the breeze, I realized something.

The prayer of a young man had become the gratitude of an older one. All of the blessings. The bike rides. The summer mornings. The family vacations. The laughter around the dinner table.

And somehow, in what felt like the blink of an eye, thirty years had passed. The breeze still blows.

The birds still sing. The difference is me.

And if I could say one thing to that younger version of myself, it would be this: Don’t spend so much time worrying about the future that you miss the beauty of the present.

Because one day you’ll discover that the moments you thought were ordinary were actually the moments that mattered most.

Since 1992, the Lighthouse has been serving the homeless in our community. As the only 24/7 shelter within a 50-mile radius, we provide housing, food, clothing, and training within a Christian environment for every resident who comes through our doors.

With the ability to house around 85 individuals, our beds are nearly always full, and in times of extreme weather, we may have to temporarily stretch our capacity. We also provide transitional housing for residents who have been successful in our program and are ready for more independent living.

When you step out of your comfort zone and start something new, you never know how it’s gonna go. Most times it takes time to forge a trail – but over in Pawhuska, it’s almost like there’s a catalyst in the atmosphere that, when mixed with the right ingredients, creates what could be compared to a sonic BOOM in the Calling to the Good realm.

You just might have heard it and felt the walls shake over there in Bartlesville when the Pawhuska Western Swing Festival was recently recognized as the #2 most Outstanding New Event in the state of Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association at the 2026 RedBud Awards Ceremony in Oklahoma City.

It’s pretty amazing when you consider that co-founders, Laura Teague and Michelle Loftis, had their inaugural festival in 2024.

That didn’t take long!

Every year, on the third weekend in November, Western Swing music lovers descent upon the Home of All Things Western for a weekend of nostalgia and dancing – and this year is poised to be the best one yet and those Pawhuska gals are gearing up to honor one of the genre’s legends, Mr. Hoyle Nix and his son, Jody Nix. If Hoyle were still alive, 2026 would mark 80 years since he formed his band down in rugged west Texas. Nix was known for having Bob Wills join him in his dance hall, the Stampede, in Big Spring, Texas.

When Merle Haggard was gathering up a group of musicians to record “For the Last Time,” a tribute album to Bob Wills – and the last album Wills was ever recorded on, Hoyle and Jody Nix were invited as special guests to perform with former Texas Playboys and Haggard. Jody was 19 years old at the time.

This year in Pawhuska during the Pawhuska Western Swing Festival, special honor will be given to honor the Nix legacy in Western Swing music. It stands to note that Jody turns 75 years old this year, and still plays a fiddle once owned by the King of Western Swing, himself.

This year’s festival will be taking place November 20-21st at the Osage County Fairgrounds in the evenings and at the Ben Johnson Cowboy Museum on Saturday, November 21st from 1-3pm.

Performers include Oklahoma Swing, Mary Lee & Caesar’s Cowboys, Cowboy Jim Garling & Richard Sharp, and Jody Nix and the Texas Cowboys. Also, the co-founding gals tell me they’re working on a little “Sampler” the evening before on Thursday, November 19th with the details yet to come!

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK

by Jay Webster Hi, friends. What’s on your mind this month?

To start with, that’s an interesting phrase unto itself, isn’t it: on your mind? What comes to mind when you think of it? I can imagine several boxes or parcels of various weights sitting on my mind, maybe stacked on top of each other, fighting not to slide off. These are the anxieties, of course. What about the hopeful things, the happy thoughts? Those seem more buoyant to me, like light clouds or brilliant balloons floating up, or sunlight drawing my mind upward. Those joys would be the opposite of the things weighing on my mind.

What’s on my mind? Oh, that’s kind of you to ask.

I guess, to start, all the normal stuff: the fate of our country, 52

the august August heat, my daughter, whom we still call the Bean, starting her career at BHS, and the health and wellbeing of several family members.

Something else that comes to mind is that this month marks the 30th anniversary of our communications company, PioneerDream (formerly Pioneer Productions). I’m thinking about the 1996 version of my wife and me, working a little too earnestly in those early years, as if the fate of the world (or at least the Ville) might depend on us. We had such lofty ideals.

The crooked, rocky trail that led us to here looks nothing like we expected. Bear in mind, there were highs, like working with the US Olympic Swim Team, making our own movies, and traveling the country. But there were plenty of lows, like

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK losing accounts, project failures, burnout, or having your electricity or water shut off during really slow months. (I’m not sure launching a business really counts if you don’t have one of your utilities shut off at least once as you are starting up.)

- how can I make this better? Someone is struggling. How can I make this better? You’re caught in a text exchange that goes negative. How can I make this better? You show up to a meeting, and everyone is staring at their phones instead of engaging. How can I make this better?

Just keeping a business alive and viable for three decades is a major triumph for us. In that time, we were often rescued from many of our own dreams (which were often just burdens in disguise) despite our desperate pursuit of them. We’ve met truly wonderful people. We’ve done high-quality work for Fortune 100 companies and indispensable non-profits, as well as producing our own creative projects. We continue to launch new, hopefully relevant ventures. And we’ve discovered new passions we could never have foreseen when we started. So, cheers, PioneerDream. We still love ya.

Sometimes making things better at the restaurant means recognizing how busy the staff is, so you get your table’s order ready for when they arrive instead of acting like you’re the only person there. Sometimes making things better means offering compliments instead of critiques. Sometimes making things better means literally asking: how can I help, what can I carry, where can I go, how can I get out of your way? It springs to mind that in the Christian practice, we would call this being salt and light. Maybe making things better means knowing when to speak your mind and when not to. On occasion, silence can be a wonderful gift - especially if you are out of your mind. And everyone is from time to time.

I’m also reminded of how our family did something truly brave this summer. We packed our backpacks and carryon suitcases and flew across “the pond” to Spain. It was fantastic on so many levels. First, we did it. We saved up, bought the tickets, cleared customs, managed the “language barrier,” and just figured it out. Second, we put ourselves in the hands of another culture - one that embraced us - and we learned from it. Third, we made the whole trip without losing or killing each other - which is no small thing.

Along the way, I learned that my daughter, Evanjalyn, is a pretty great navigator. My wife remains a skilled traveler and coordinator. And, even without a common language, there is so much to learn, witness, and share. We did our very best to represent you well. And each person who learned we were from Oklahoma in Estados Unidos (home of vaqueros… cowboys) was excited to meet us.

Considering how to make things better is a wonderful way to be mindful in a given day. I’m truly awful at it, but I’m getting better as I put my mind to it.

I’m also thinking about how grateful I am to do this each month. You don’t have to read this, but you do. Sharing this conversation with you allows me to order my thoughts and let some ideas congeal to a place where I can actually use them. And I love talking about all this with you when we see each other out in the Ville. Thanks for being a part of this with me. And thanks for letting me share what was on my mind this month.

I’ll meet you back here next month. Until then, there is so much good we can do; let’s go do it. Peace out, my friends.

I know a trip like this isn’t within everyone’s reach.

(Though it is much more do-able than most realize.) But some travel is likely possible for you. Something outside your immediate comfort zone. Something that feels a bit like a dare. Something that requires you to “figure it out” on the spot. If you can, do that. And do it sooner rather than later.

And commit yourself as early as you can: book airfare or a hotel, or call someone and tell them you’re coming next week…before it slips your mind.

Something else that has been on my mind lately is a conversation my wife and I had while we were in Madrid. (See, that’s another great thing about traveling: you get to throw out “Madrid” in casual conversation like a humble brag.) How Ann-Janette and I got onto the topic escapes my mind, but it’s relevant just the same. We were talking about the objective of “doing the good you can do.” That’s a pretty good life’s ambition… but how do you do it in practical, daily ways? This is where we got to: what if, each time you found yourself in a conversation, a text exchange, a restaurant, a coffee order, a traffic situation, or a visit with someone, you asked yourself JULY 2026 | bmonthly

MOMENTS IN TIME

That One Moment

I believe in our lifetime there is That One Moment that could change our lives.

Most of us, if not all of us, would not see it or recognize it. It’s a moment where if you blink it would be gone as fast as it appeared. That moment for me was in 1985. A young boy just turning 16 and moving to a new state, a new city, and a new me. Trying to figure out who I was, not having any friends, and leaving everything and everyone I knew to go to a place called Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Oklahoma? All I knew about Oklahoma was what I read in school books. This is where the Native Americans lived and Oklahoma football. I was an Arkansas Razorback die-hard fan, and I did not want to go to the Sooner state. It was June 7th of 1985 after my mom got re-married to my new step-dad Ken McPhail…three days after I turned 16. We were coming into Bartlesville driving in a UHaul truck with my older brother Kevin and leaving everything behind.

I was scared…so scared that I would not ever have friends like I had in Arkansas. I was leaving a girlfriend I had been dating for the past 6 months. The first few months it was just me and Kevin living here by ourselves because my mom and my new step-dad were in Arkansas taking care of the house.

They were also involved in a legal battle with my prior stepdad over custody of my younger brother and sister. That was the biggest relief for me leaving that evil man who had beaten me for over 9 years. I could finally breathe. We met a few people and started working in the oil fields for my stepdad. Every night we would just be free to cruise the strip with money in our pockets. We had parties in the house and started meeting many people. The McPhail house was the place to go to on the weekends. Even though school started in August, we still lived here by ourselves almost until the end of September.

This is That One Moment when my whole life changed.

It was early October, and we were cruising the strip on a Friday night. As we made our way through McDonalds, there she was. That was the moment that would change my life forever. As a young 16-year old you never thought like that…

you were just looking for the next fun time. I saw her…

Christy Dutcher sitting in her white Jeep Cherokee. It was like two stars colliding when I saw her. I told Kevin to drive back around because I just saw the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. We started dating and for the next year she introduced me to so many people. The fun we had together was incredible.

She helped me so much in becoming a new kid in town who no one knows, to everyone’s friend. If you want to say it, the cool guy that everyone wanted to be around. Not because of me but because I dated one of the most popular girls in high school. Most if not all guys wanted to date her. It was this young out of state kid who was the lucky one. We eventually went our own ways before we graduated, but that light ignited in that moment never burned out.

Eighteen years later in That One Moment we brought our two families together and married in July of 2005.

Thirteen months later we had our daughter Grace. The light that never burned out was now in the middle of a hurricane when I relapsed in my cocaine addiction. Here I was married to the love of my life. For the next 15 months it was a battle for my life and our marriage. When all hope seemed lost she believed, she prayed, and she never quit fighting for this 16year old kid she met all those years ago. That One Moment where mercy and grace stepped in and saved me, us, and our family. She believed just enough to never stop the fight for her husband. Everyone believed I could not get better. The morning she called and asked me to move back in the house was That One Moment that God took it all away. I mean HE literally took every want, need, and desire to do cocaine away. I celebrated 19 years this past March. This month Christy and I will celebrate 21 years of marriage and 41 years of a friendship which started in the McDonalds parking lot all those years ago. Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death

By 1765, British colonization along the Atlantic coast of North America had been established as the “Thirteenth Colonies of Great Britain” with a degree of self-governance. However, a tug of war for independence, sovereignty and against taxation erupted into the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) which helped create the groundwork for our political, social and economic structure.

Do you recognize the name Silence Dogood? Dogood was a self-educated civic leader, scientist and renowned inventor.

He flew a kite in an electrical storm and signed all foundational documents that formed the United States. In addition, his photo is on the $100 bill. Yes, it was Benjamin Franklin who wrote under this pseudo-name while temporarily employed at The Franklin Press, his brother’s printing shop.

The French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a conflict between Great Britain vs France and her Indigenous allies. Upon the onset of this war, Benjamin Franklin used his connection as the publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette to become an instigator in the unification of the American colonies. His segmented snake cartoon with the words “JOIN or DIE” pressed his political point of colonial unity and later became an iconic symbol in support of the American Revolution.

The French and Indian War was costly. To recoup some of the losses, Britain implemented the Sugar Act, Stamp Act and Townsend Acts… taxing sugar, molasses, newspapers, glass, paint, tea

and much more. Restrictions were even placed on land, housing and supplies. Total chaos erupted creating the bloody King Street Boston Massacre (1770) and Boston Tea Party (1773) in protest of excessive taxation and rights violations. America has never shied from a challenge to her fundamental rights; we stand tall and strong in preservation of all that our country has been built upon.

Everyone knows, if you place a cat in a small box, there will be a fight and indeed there was a fight…the American Revolution.

Never before were “the lives and liberties of millions of yet unborn intimately invested,” said John Adams. And, never before had there been such intense carnage at war. The American colonists were outnumbered; manpower and supplies dwindled to near exhaustion. During the winter of 1775-1776, the heroism of Colonel Henry Knox and his troops was on full display. They gathered 120,000 pounds of artillery, left behind by the British, and transported the goods 300 miles crosscountry to the awaiting arms of Commanderin-Chief George Washington in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The supplies arrived January 25 and, on March 4, Washington’s troops moved into position under a decoy of light artillery fire pouring upon Boston; while in the shadows, Washington moved into fortified position at Dorchester Heights. Daybreak, March 5, the sixth anniversary of the Boston Massacre, the British awoke to 20 cannons aimed upon their harbored ships. It took two-weeks for the British to

completely evacuate Boston…lock, stock and barrel…120 ships carrying 9,000 Redcoats, 2,000 Loyalists, and everything that was not nailed down in Boston left the shore.

However, the win was a short celebration. In deep seeded vengeance, Britain sent 33,000 troops to finish the war and annihilate the 13 colonies. Within the colonies, defiance was festering and determination was fierce. The war was politically fought in Philadelphia and militarily in Boston; however, George Washington and British Commander William Howe knew New York would be the deciding feat between the colonies returning the rule of the King and deliverance of liberty and freedom.

Washington was indeed defeated, but not deterred.

The annihilation finally came at Yorktown on October 17, 1781, executed without mercy as the Americans and French pressed forward, laying lives on the ground in death as they persevered.

For the British, the inevitable surrender was mortifying; however, a white handkerchief waved and the British became prisoners of war. The Americans under George Washington and the French under General Comte de Rochambeau stood victorious having defied the King.

This was the point in history that “one patriotic band of brothers” came together as one nation, joined not by religion, culture or history, rather they joined as a union, sharing a set of “purposes and ideals for one common cause” which became the point of origin for the United States of America.

From the foundation of 13 colonies (Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Maryland, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia), the three main “Charters of Freedom” were established. The Declaration of Independence (1776), U.S.

Constitution (1787) and the Bill of Rights (1791).

The Declaration of Independence officially declared the 13 colonies free of British rule, outlining American equality and unalienable rights. Originally drafted by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman, the three-part document was reviewed and revised by the Continental Congress before being adopted July 4, 1776. On August 2, fifty of the eventual fifty-six signatures of notable men were affixed, with a lady’s name to follow.

In 1777, Mary Katharine Goddard was Baltimore’s postmistress and newspaper printer. She was tasked with the second printing of the Declaration of Independence on which she accidentallyon-purpose inked her name into history as the printer. This document became known as the Goddard Declaration of Independence; the first copy to list the signers of the document, which was assigned to each of the newly formed United States as permanent record. This brazen act of treason could have cost Goddard her life and livelihood; instead, she changed the course of history.

The U.S. Constitution contains the Preamble and Seven Articles recognized as the supreme law of the land and established the purpose and structure of the government with three branches (legislative, executive, judicial) and a system of checks and balances as oversight.

And finally, the Bill of Rights which were tucked within the first ten of twenty-seven amendments to the Constitution; followed by the 13th abolishing slavery and the 19th granting women the right to vote.

B THE LIGHT

B the Light Update: Make a Difference is challenging, but volunteers help make it possible. Whether someone is helping organize the boutique, serving guests, assisting with maintenance projects, teaching a skill, or simply offering encouragement, they are making a lasting impact.

This month, we want to shine a light on the people who help keep B the Light Mission moving forward every day: our volunteers.

When people ask how we do what we do, the answer is simple: we couldn’t do it without the incredible support of our community. Volunteers are truly the backbone of this mission. They give their time, talents, energy, and hearts to help us serve those who are struggling and looking for hope.

Since opening our doors, 53 regular volunteers have served a combined 2,633 hours at B the Light Mission, as well as many more group and organization volunteers. Over the last four weeks alone, we have averaged 20 volunteers and 78 volunteer hours each week. Those numbers are impressive, but what they really represent is something even greater—people choosing to make a difference in the lives of others.

Every volunteer hour helps us stretch our resources further and serve more people. Volunteers help sort clothing donations, organize food, clean spaces, plant flowers, work in the garden, assist with special projects, prepare for community events, and complete countless other tasks that help keep the mission running smoothly. Some volunteers serve regularly each week, while others join us for a single project. Every contribution matters.

One of the most encouraging things for us is seeing individuals, churches, businesses, civic groups, students, retirees, and families come together for a common purpose. We see people from all walks of life serving side by side, united by a desire to help others. That spirit of generosity and compassion is what makes our community so special.

At B the Light Mission, we are working every day to bring hope to the hopeless, food to the hungry, love to the lost, healing to the broken, and shelter to the struggling. The work

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

The Quilted Shore

It is summer in Ocean City. Biplanes pull banners advertising seafood buffets while below dolphins arc through the surf. The lettuce and peas are out of the ground and the tiny gardens fronting the summer houses are blooming hydrangeas, daylilies and lavender. It is June and summer is still cool and refreshing here.

Karen and I have come here for years, before kids, during kids, after kids, with grandkids. I’m not in charge now. I didn’t even book the house for the thirteen of us.

Jenna is expecting another daughter. But, she still kicks the soccer ball with us while carrying something the shape of a soccer ball under her blue and white summer striped shirt.

We take one fabulous vacation together every year and have adult conversations about life insurance and artificial intelligence although AI can’t explain why the grandchildren resist potty training and afternoon naps. Jenna and Andrew have selected a name for their daughter: Nora. I like that name. It reminds me of Nora Ephron, the writer. I suggest Nora Bea since they haven’t landed on a middle name, although I have little to say about this.

Contrary to what Shakespeare said about roses, names are important. If the baseball Yankees were called the Liberty, it would be harder to hate them. Also, Limburger cheese must have been named after its smell. And my granddaughter’s dress, freckled with flowers, is brighter and bluer because of the forgetme-nots. So it is with our family going to the shore. We don’t say beach. We say down the shore or going to the shore.

We bury children in the sand, although we always uncover them and bring them home. Seagulls steal slices of Mack and Manco pizza and Berenatos hoagies from our hands. This is also part of the lore of the shore. It does not come without hardship.

I could visit here just for the food. Shriver’s fudge and taffy.

Johnson’s popcorn. Kohr Brothers soft serve ice cream. All the places we love are small and old fashioned. Berenatos only takes cash. They have remarkable cheesesteaks and hoagies, a wooden barrel of dill pickles, all with unapologetically slow service.

One evening, Andrew spots Marty Smith, the ESPN reporter. Andrew can’t help himself. “Hey, Marty!” Marty is walking a posse of small lap dogs. Marty nods and says, “Hey dude, what’s up?” Then he keeps walking.

This place reminds me of my father not because it was his normal place but because it wasn’t. He only came here once. He walked into a boardwalk art studio and impulsively bought a thousand dollars worth of framed paintings by local artists. It was the only art he ever bought in his life. This was before he had sextuplebypass heart surgery and found himself alive in the recovery room, where he sang every verse of Amazing Grace out loud. Then he sent out for $250 of Olive Garden take-out. It wasn’t for him. He gave it to the staff on the cardiac wing of St. Johns Hospital.

On one visit to the shore, my wife and daughters parasailed, hovering over the ocean hundreds of yards out from shore. From above, you can see thousands of fish, some ominously large.

After seeing that massive congregation of marine life beneath the waves, Karen doesn’t go into the deep water.

We buy souvenir hats, sweatshirts with crossed oars and Ocean City across the front. This year, Karen bought one with an embroidered American flag on the front. She pulled it out and our entire family spontaneously broke into song, You’re a Grand Old Flag. Remarkably, we knew every word.

We buy aromatic coffee and perfect blueberry scones from a bohemian coffee shop, the Barefoot Cafe. It is 7:02 a.m. We follow a local plumber inside after he unhooks the wooden sign that says closed, flips it over to the open side, then walks in and orders a cappuccino. We follow him and order lattes and scones from the owner who keeps a lovely flower garden and wears a head scarf straight out of 1967 Berkeley.

Scones, sand, daughters in the sky, a granddaughter still on the way, my father’s paintings, and all of us singing old songs — these are the pieces we carry home, bright scraps of ordinary days, stitched together into a life.

LET FREEDOM RING

Nuclear Power Plant Protests

In the late 1970’s, nuclear power plants were being built across the United States, and not without opposition.

Two plants gained much attention from protestors in both Oklahoma and Kansas. In October, 1978, Tulsa area news outlets reported, “Opponents of nuclear power plant say fight to prevent opening has just begun.”

On November 13, 1978, members of the Sunbelt Alliance, an Oklahoma-based group, planned to attend the Karen Silkwood Memorial Rally in Oklahoma City. The rally was organized to honor Silkwood, a Kerr-McGee nuclear worker who died while protesting working conditions related to employee safety at the company’s plant in Crescent, Oklahoma.

The following month, Sunbelt coordinated with the Sunflower Alliance of Kansas to protest the proposed Black Fox Nuclear Power Plant at Inola, Oklahoma. The latter group had a vested interest as the construction at Inola and the proposed Wolf Creek Power Plant near Burlington, Kansas, shared logistical transport access required for construction – the Verdigris River.

On December 12, 1978, news reports indicated the $50,000,000 nuclear reactor, central to the Wolf Creek Power Plant, would arrive at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa in early January, 1979. Reports suggested it would take about 10 days to transfer the reactor from a barge to a special railroad car for completion of transport to Burlington. The barge and railroad car were specially designed to accommodate the 350-ton reactor, which was forty feet tall and twenty-two feet in diameter. The Santa Fe Railroad carefully prepared for the transport, including replacement of the bridge over the Caney River at Bartlesville due to clearance issues.

Members of the Sunbelt Alliance developed a plan to block the barge’s arrival at the Port of Catoosa by launching canoes and small paddle boats into the Verdigris River while the Sunflower Alliance planned to sit on the railroad track leading into Burlington to block the train upon its arrival.

On January 4, 1979, about 60 protestors gathered on a hill overlooking the Port. Most stayed on public property displaying signs, but 17 climbed down and entered the private property. While the protest was described as peaceful, Rogers County Sheriff Amos Ward said the 17 were ultimately arrested 66

for trespass after they’d been given repeated instruction and opportunities to leave.

The Sunbelt Alliance had initially expected about 150 protestors for the event, with as many as 75 arrests possible.

However, icy conditions thwarted the group’s plans to block the river, and Sheriff Ward blamed the frigid temps for the sparse turnout. Still, the group remained steadfast in their position and also stood in support of the Sunflower Alliance. Hal Rankin with Sunbelt stated, “We said before that Black Fox will not be built and, today, we say Wolf Creek will not be built.”

On January 11, 1979, however, the eleven-car Santa Fe freight train left the Port of Catoosa carrying the nuclear reactor north, through Bartlesville, on its way to Burlington.

Snow and icy conditions slowed the work of transferring the reactor from the barge to the rail car, requiring the construction of a $450,000 dock to complete the task.

Railroad officials reported no issues on the 10-hour rail trip north to the state line, adding the Oklahoma Highway Patrol had escorted the train from Catoosa. However, they were soon met by more than 100 protestors at Caney, Kansas. The train continued to Independence, Kansas, where it stayed under heavy guard overnight. The next morning, the train departed at 08:30 after it was transferred to the Missouri Pacific line for the final journey into Burlington, where the Coffey County Sheriff’s Office reported approximately 100 protestors were camped out along the track awaiting the train’s arrival.

The next afternoon, there was a delay about 15 miles south of the Wolf Creek construction site. Several protestors had laid or sat down on the tracks, blocking the train. Thirtyfive protestors were arrested for trespass. They were noted to be members of a second Kansas protest group called the Kansas Natural Guard. They were transported to jail by bus, somewhat ironically, by the Kansas National Guard.

Ultimately, construction of the Wolf Creek Power Plant in Burlington was completed and it came online on June 4, 1985; it remains in operation today.

Conversely, construction of the Black Fox Power Plant at Inola was never completed.

The project was scrapped in 1982 in response to several lawsuits.
