Environmental Responsibility Statement 2024

London 24.04.2024

Bartha contemporar y is proud to affirm our commitment to environmental stewardship as a dedicated and active member of the Galler y Climate Coalition A s a family-owned galler y with a global presence, we acknowledge the critical responsibility that comes with our operations to effectuate a positive environmental impact in response to the acute global climate crisis

The challenge of limiting global warming to below 1 5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in international agreements, is monumental. The consequences of inaction are dire, including escalating biodiversity loss, dangerous air pollution levels, and more We must act now to mitigate these impacts

Our medium-term goal is to decarbonise our operations comprehensively While we actively offset carbon emissions where reduction is currently unfeasible offsetting more than our total emissions it's essential to recognise this strategy as a temporar y measure, not a lasting solution We are working with a carbon offset company that follows similar principles at the Strategic Climate Fund in addition to offsetting The cost of these efforts is significant, particularly for a small galler y such as Bartha contemporar y Both our leadership and the artists we represent are united in the goal to significantly reduce our carbon footprint by decarbonising all aspects of our business by 2030

The environmental crisis is multifaceted, encompassing global warming, declining biodiversity, air and plastic pollution, and more. The urgency for action is clear, with the UN highlighting the need for immediate measures to maintain the 1 5-degree target The art sector, especially in the Global North, is uniquely positioned to lead by example, given its significant environmental footprint and influential cultural platform At Bartha contemporar y, our commitment to contemporar y art is intertwined with ecological consciousness, understanding that the climate crisis directly threatens global art and culture, significantly impacting marginalised communities

Our approach to minimising our environmental impact includes:

● Membership in the Galler y Climate Coalition

● We are committed to halving our carbon emissions by 2030 from a 2019 baseline

● Regular carbon footprint assessments to monitor progress

● Setting specific reduction targets for key areas, including significantly reducing flights, shiing to sea, rail, or road freight, enhancing building energy efficiency, transitioning to sustainable packaging, and adopting low or zero-emissions vehicles

● Implementing various strategies to achieve these targets, such as exploring alternative shipping methods, revising travel policies, conducting energy audits, collaborating on sustainable sector-wide solutions, and engaging with suppliers on environmental practices

● Monthly team meetings to review our environmental progress

Over the past three financial years, we estimate our galler y CO2 footprint was:

The majority of CO2 our business produces is the consequence of air travel, our reliance on air freight, and the general volume and frequency of freight shipments Since Januar y 2024, we have enacted a new galler y exhibition schedule, dramatically reducing the frequency of shipments to and from Europe to London We are also reevaluating our reliance on air travel and want to rely more on travel by train and, in some instances, road travel, particularly if this can be combined with transporting goods We should note that Brexit is significantly complicating this.

While carbon offset is not a solution, Bartha contemporar y annually offsets over 80 tCo2 through Chooose Chooose is involved in various projects that achieve offsets through community-based projects ranging from Imrpove Cooking Stoves Programs to Mangrove plantation projects to wind power generation projects across the globe Considering the ver y unreliable nature of the carbon offset certification process and, on the other hand, the limited scope of our carbon footprint calculations, we decided to overcompensate by offsetting more than five times our annual carbon footprint 7

2021 - 2022 8 48 tCo2e (lower due to the pandemic) 2022 - 2023 14 8 tCo2e 2023 - 2024 14 7 tCO2e

Our dedication to these initiatives reflects a broader commitment to reduce our environmental impact and inspire change within the art world and beyond Through decisive action and collaboration, we strive to contribute meaningfully to the global effort to combat the environmental crisis with a clear vision for a sustainable future for all
