Message from The CEO As we enter the vibrant season of spring, it’s only fitting that we take a moment to honor an incredible individual who has been a cornerstone of our community for many years. Please join me in congratulating our Chief Operating Officer, Betsy Cowan, on her well-deserved retirement. Betsy’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the J have left an indelible mark on all of us. Her service has truly been extraordinary, and while we’ll miss her, we wish her all the best as she begins this new chapter of her life. Betsy, thank you for everything you’ve done to make the J a better place for all of us. You will be missed, but your legacy will live on!

First, we want to highlight Early Childhood Registration for the 2025-2026 school year at the Dreeben School for Young Children. If you have a child between 6 weeks and Pre-K, don’t miss out on securing their spot for a year full of growth, exploration, and fun.

(See page 10) Then, of course, there’s our Summer J-Camp, offering kids from Kindergarten through 9th grade the chance to dive into a summer packed with activities—from arts and sports to swimming and field trips. Spots are filling up fast, so now’s the time to sign up! (See page 10) For our 50+ community, we’re thrilled to announce the ongoing competition at the Texas Senior Games—an inspiring opportunity to stay active and engage with others in the community. Whether you’re a competitor or a cheerleader, we’d love for you to join in.

4 At The JCC Member Spotlight!

The JCC Member Spotlight is a place where we can get to know the people in our community- the people we see every day. Sometimes we see members working out and wonder what they’re like, or maybe we wonder if we should be doing what they’re doing, or maybe, as in the case of John Poteet, someone is inspiring us and they don’t even know it.

John and his wife, Shirley, joined the JCC 23 years ago. Since then, John has been doing strength training, static and dynamic stretching, balance exercise for fall prevention and for cardio workouts he uses the elliptical machine and he also road bikes. He even does a little juggling “for hand to eye coordination.” John reminds us that “staying fit enhances functionality and slows the process of aging.”

I asked John what motivates him to work out. His answer is both witty and wise, “I want to look as good as I can, feel as well as I can, and function independently as long as I live. That’s called ‘Keeping the wolf away from the door’.” He says he knows that the wolf will win, but he wants “to function independently until the wolf catches me not looking.”

If you are new to the J, John says you should definitely “take the tour,” and as far as exercise is concerned “set realistic goals.”

He also reminds us that “recovery is as important to a good program as exercise.”

I told John that fellow members have come forward and called him an inspiration, and asked him what he thought about that.

He answered that he’s “deeply humbled and flattered with the thought of inspiring others.” He added that we should “never underestimate the impact you may have on others.”

John knows what he’s talking about. I haven’t mentioned it, but John is 95 years young. He’s fit. He’s quick and he’s an inspiration to us all.

ARTISTIC JOURNEY, FOGIEL GIFT SHOP SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL ARTISTS Dvir Bar-Gal: Photographer, Director and Cultural Advocate Dvir Bar-Gal is a distinguished photographer, photojournalist, director for T.V. and expert on Shanghai's Jewish history. A graduate of Tel Aviv University with a background in Film Studies, Mass Communications, and the Arts, Bar-Gal's career spans a range of media, from news cameraman to director of short documentaries, focusing on cultural stories, travel, and current affairs.

Growing up in Haifa, just steps from the Mediterranean, Bar-Gal was deeply inspired by the dynamic, everchanging landscapes of sea and shore. This connection March 2025 Artist to the natural world, particularly the shifting moods of Dvir Bar-Gal the sea, remains a central theme in his photographic work. Over the years, he has captured the fleeting beauty of the coastline—from the shifting colors of the water to the delicate footprints left in the sand.

In 2001, Bar-Gal relocated to Shanghai, where he began extensive journalistic research on the city’s lost Jewish cemeteries. His discovery and preservation efforts, which included collecting gravestones and advocating for their proper memorialization, brought international attention to Shanghai's overlooked Jewish heritage.

His work in this area has been widely covered in both print and broadcast media worldwide. Since 2003, BarGal has led the Shanghai Jewish Heritage Tour, sharing this rich yet forgotten history with people around the globe. Between 2004 and 2009, Bar-Gal owned ARTSEA Photography Gallery in Shanghai—the city’s first gallery dedicated exclusively to the art of photography.

His gallery played a significant role in the promotion of contemporary photography in Shanghai and beyond.

Bar-Gal is the author of three photo albums: Sea Spirit (1998), For the Benefit of the People (2010), and Shanghai Jew (2013).

Additionally, in 2009, he published the first-ever Passover Haggadah of China.

A frequent guest speaker in U.S. universities and cultural organizations since 2013, Bar-Gal continues to engage audiences with the untold stories of Shanghai’s Jewish community.

After relocating to San Antonio, Texas in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bar-Gal remains committed to his mission of preserving cultural legacies and sharing them with the world.

His exhibition history includes solo shows such as Sea Spirit at Tel Aviv’s Cinematheque (1998), New Zealand’s Sights at ZOA House Tel-Aviv 2001, RedLand at Artsea Gallery in Shanghai (2005), and Hanging-Out in SH (2008), as well as group exhibitions in Beijing’s 798 Art Hub (2009).

Bar-Gal's work continues to explore themes of memory, identity, and the ever-changing landscape, both physical and cultural. Through his lens, he invites viewers to reflect on the impermanence of time and the significance of preserving the stories that shape our world.

Thank you for your continued support and for making the JCC part of your fitness journey. As we welcome the new year, it's a great time to make positive changes and a reminder to revisit some important guidelines to help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Group Exercise Etiquette & Policies: Reservations Required: All group exercise classes require reservations. These open two days before the class at 8:00 PM (8:30 PM for Body Pump).

Cancel your reservation if you can't attend, allowing others to join. If a class is full, check for availability due to cancellations.

Class Participation: Reservations guarantee participation but not specific spots in the studio—classes are first-come, first-served. Please practice spatial awareness when setting up.

Studio Access: Please do not enter a studio while a class is in session or if the door is closed. Studios are reserved for scheduled Group Exercise classes only.

Equipment Use: Do not remove equipment from studios unless directed by the instructor.

Attire: Closed-toe footwear is required for cardio and strength training. Specialized footwear is allowed for cycle, yoga, and stretch classes.

All Fitness Levels Welcome: Our classes cater to various fitness levels. Let the instructor know if you need modifications or additional challenges.

Age Policy: Members 15 and older may join group classes. Members aged 13-14 may participate when accompanied by an adult or guardian.

A Journey of Hope, Resilience, and Jewish Identity: Reflections from Gabe & Sarah on the Mifgash That Matters Experience in Israel Jews across the world have been facing identity crises brought Traveling to Israel for the Mifgash That Matters program was a about by a sharp rise in antisemitism and the inability to travel to deeply emotional but necessary experience. While the program was for Jewish professionals, it was impossible not to process their homeland. Despite these struggles, Sarah Ram and I were and grieve what we saw and heard on a personal level. As incredibly honored and privileged to have been selected as someone with a deep and cherished relationship with Israel, I members of the most recent iteration of the Mifgash (Encounter) knew this would be a heavy visit, especially since this was my That Matters cohort presented by the JCC Association of North first visit back to Israel since October 7th, 2023.

While many of these speakers were not Jewish, they shared a proud Israeli identity and love for the significance that the Holy Land holds for people of all backgrounds.

Aside from the incredible stories of sorrow, perseverance, and hope that we were able to hear, the greatest lesson that I learned from this trip came from the closing statements of one of the iCenter leaders. To paraphrase, he said that Jews have been referred to as “the people of the book,” and while this can be taken literally as in the people of the five books of Moses, he chose to interpret the moniker in a different way. He said that as the people of the book, it is our job as Jewish educators to write the chapter for our generation in the book of Jewish history. I have come back from this trip with a stronger tie to Israel and my Jewish identity and the ambition to ensure that my generation’s chapter in said book will be one of peace and prosperity.

Children & Youth

The JCC is proud to have one of the top preschools in the city. The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children is the only Nationally Accredited Jewish Early Childhood program in San Antonio. Since 1993 our program has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which is the gold standard for the highest quality early care and education in the field. Additionally, we are the only San Antonio preschool that is a member of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA). This is the North American connection to Italy’s Reggio Children, promoting the philosophy and values of the Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education across the country.

Being a Reggio Emilia inspired preschool means we view all children as capable and competent from birth. They come into this world wanting to learn and connect with others and we take the time to observe and listen to what they tell us. Learning happens through collaborative play-based projects which allow children to be active participants, guided by nurturing teachers who intentionally plan experiences and materials presented to the children designed in ways that spark curiosity and creativity.

We focus on the development of the whole child, with an understanding that social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual development are all equally important in young children. In early childhood, children build the skills they need to be successful the rest of their lives.

At the JCC, children are introduced to Jewish culture, traditions, and values through stories, songs, art, and hands-on materials in the classroom. The children visit our Judaica Specialist weekly and learn both Jewish and secular music with our Music Specialist.

Each week the children celebrate Havdalah to begin the week and Shabbat on Fridays. Throughout the year we plan special holiday experiences to help children gain a deeper understanding of stories and traditions. Though these experiences focus on Jewish traditions, they are designed to feel accessible to families of all faiths.
