Message from The CEO Thank you for picking up your April/May issue of the Center Peace. We utilize this publication as an opportunity to share upcoming events and engage with you in a way that is comfortable and convenient to you. And that’s also how we approach much of our programming and the services we offer the community. We aim for it to be comfortable and convenient, like your home away from home.

This month and into May we will be commemorating and celebrating and we invite you to join us. On April 22 we will launch Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) events with our community Yom Ha’Zikaron commemoration followed immediately by Yom Ha’aztmaut festivities. Please stay tuned to your mailboxes and email for more details about both of these events. Our JAHM events will offer something for everyone of all ages and we hope you will find the event(s) that is meaningful, comfortable and convenient for you.

Included in our JAHM events is our Annual Meeting, scheduled for Sunday, May 31. This event offers us an opportunity to celebrate individuals who have impacted our work and mission in meaningful ways, as well as the programs we offer to the community. And, the meeting’s agenda includes a thank you to our outgoing board members who have given much time, thought and energy to support our mission.

Simultaneously, we will welcome our new board members and slate of officers to our roster at the meeting. We will announce our new board members and slate of officers via a regular Sunday email and social media. I hope you will join us for this important event.

4 Live up at the J It’s a Runderful Life A conversation with April Myers, our Member Engagement & Retention Coordinator, & Hilary Burgess-Barrett

Because the JCC is a birth through life institution, we get to hear a lot of stories. Members often join as families, bringing their kids here for preschool, sports, or camp.

Many of those kids grow up to be camp counselors, then go off to college where they start a JCC membership of their own. We have Hillary Burgess-Barrett members who stay their whole

lives long. Friendships are forged here, and sometimes love is too. More than 60 years ago, Hillary Burgesse’s greatgrandparents were swim instructors at the Brooklyn JCC. A generation later, Hillary’s grandparents met at the same JCC and also married.

Patricia “Trish” Reichert is a painter, psychotherapist in private practice, outdoor adventurer, and mother of an amazing son who believes deeply in the power of art and adventure as forms of life experience and expression. She incorporates art into her work with clients to encourage expression and healing, while also using it as an important part of her own creative and personal practice. For Reichert, creative exploration can shift mood states, process emotion, and support healing from both old and new wounds.

Today the Burgess-Barrett family are members at our Barshop JCC. Hillary’s oldest son attends school on our campus, and the rest of the family are here nearly every day training in the fitness center, visiting J-Care, attending camp, exploring enrichment classes, or just relaxing by the pool as a family. Hillary’s advice to new members is “make the most of your membership,” adding that for programs, “we get a discount, just for being members.”

Her work invites viewers into fleeting moments of her inner journey. Each person’s experience of the artwork is uniquely their own, and she is grateful to share even a brief moment alongside others on their personal paths.

Reichert earned her Bachelor of Fine Art from The University of Texas in Austin and her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Texas State University.

If you frequent the fitness center, you may have noticed we have a serious runner in our midst. I was lucky enough to get the chance to ask her a few questions about her running mindset.

Hillary’s dad signed her up for a 5K when she was just seven years old, and she’s been running ever since. After her youngest son was born four years ago, Hillary began running marathons. I asked her what the most surprising thing she’s learned about herself on her fitness/running journey, and she said her primary goal was just to finish her first marathon, but “I never would have expected myself to get faster.” She continued with “but after a few more, I started to improve and what used to sound impossible is a real goal.”

Hillary’s weekly fitness routine consists of “3 or 4 “easy” paced runs of 4-5 miles, a speed workout of 7-8 miles (almost always done on a treadmill at the J), and a long run of 16-20 miles on the weekend, plus 2 or 3 strength training sessions on the machines in the J’s fitness center.” If this routine sounds too challenging, Hillary has advice for those who have never run before but want to start, “sign up for a 5K a few months out for motivation, and then just go out and start!”

Talk about dedication! Hillary’s passion for sports and family is inspiring. The way she and her family use the facilities together and individually is proof that the J offers something for everyone, generation after generation.

Jewish Journeys Understanding the Holidays Ahead Passover is a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. Families celebrate by gathering for a ritual meal called a Seder, where they retell the story, eat symbolic foods, and read from the Haggadah. The holiday also emphasizes avoiding leavened bread and eating matzah to remember the hurried departure from Egypt.

Shavuot is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. It takes place seven weeks after Passover and marks the end of the counting of the Omer.

Traditionally, many Jews study Torah late into the night, attend synagogue services, and read the Book of Ruth. It is also customary to eat dairy foods, such as cheesecake or blintzes, as part of the celebration.

The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children Celebrates Passover & Early Learning Excellence

The Pre-K children started our Passover celebration early this year with our annual L’Dor V’Dor Passover Seder Luncheon in March. This event brings the Pre-K children, their families, and older adults from our community together for a short Seder followed by a shared lunch.

All children then participated in a school-wide Passover Experience at the end of March. This program is designed to go beyond the usual model Seder, by creating a hands-on experience of the Passover story. Groups of children participate in stations that represent the experience of the Israelites in the Exodus story. The story moves the children from being told to build block cities for pharaoh, through simulated experiences with several of the plagues, including frogs, hail, locust and darkness, finally to go through the Red Sea to freedom. Moses and Pharaoh help guide the children and make the story come to life.

During Passover, the children will read Passover stories, sing Passover Songs, and participate in fun Passover-themed games and activities. Another tradition we have is creating kosher Passover snacks. They will make traditional foods, such as Matzah Ball Soup as well as new favorites such as Matzah Pizza.

These experiences allow the children to connect with the holiday in memorable and meaningful ways.

NAEYC Week of the Young Child

Each April the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrates The Week of the Young Child to highlight the value of early learning and bring awareness to the needs of young children. This year is extra special because NAEYC is celebrating its 100th year of dedication to young children and their teachers.

The Week of the Young Child will take place April 11-17 and the JCC preschool will celebrate with special themed activities each day that week. More details will be shared in our weekly early childhood email.

The JCC Block and Dreeben School for Young Children has been NAEYC accredited since 1993. We are proud to be one of only forty-seven schools in San Antonio to be NAEYC accredited.

NAEYC accreditation is recognized as a marker of the highest quality in the field of early childhood and earned by only the top ten percent of programs across the country. This can be seen in our low teacher-child ratios and dedication to developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning philosophy.

PICKLEBALL CLINICS Join our Pickleball Clinics to learn every aspect of the game, from basic shot techniques and rules to court positioning and strategy. Clinics are offered year-round for both juniors and adults.

All skill levels are welcome!

INDOOR PICKLEBALL PICKUP / OPEN PLAY RULES Pickup play is available on Court 3 only.

Games are played on Court 3 with a 15-minute time limit.

Matches go to 11 points, win by 2, with teams switching ends at 6 points. Winners serve first and start on the north end.

To join the challenge, place your paddle (and your partner’s) in the next available spots on the rack. After each game, players rotate in with winners and waiting participants.

Court 3 is the Doubles Challenge Court: 2 on, 2 off, with winners staying together for up to 4 consecutive wins.
