BecausetheJCCisabirththrough lifeinstitution,wegettohearalot ofstories.Membersoftenjoinas families,bringingtheirkidshere forpreschool,sports,orcamp. Manyofthosekidsgrowuptobe campcounselors,thengooffto collegewheretheystartaJCC membershipoftheirown.Wehave memberswhostaytheirwhole
liveslong.Friendshipsareforgedhere,andsometimesloveis too.Morethan60yearsago,HillaryBurgesse’sgreatgrandparentswereswiminstructorsattheBrooklynJCC.A generationlater,Hillary’sgrandparentsmetatthesameJCCand alsomarried.
TodaytheBurgess-BarrettfamilyaremembersatourBarshop JCC.Hillary’soldestsonattendsschoolonourcampus,andthe restofthefamilyareherenearlyeverydaytraininginthefitness center,visitingJ-Care,attendingcamp,exploringenrichment classes,orjustrelaxingbythepoolasafamily.Hillary’sadviceto newmembersis“makethemostofyourmembership,”adding thatforprograms,“wegetadiscount,justforbeingmembers.”
Ifyoufrequentthefitnesscenter,youmayhavenoticedwehave aseriousrunnerinourmidst.Iwasluckyenoughtogetthe chancetoaskherafewquestionsaboutherrunningmindset. Hillary’sdadsignedherupfora5Kwhenshewasjustseven yearsold,andshe’sbeenrunningeversince.Afterheryoungest sonwasbornfouryearsago,Hillarybeganrunningmarathons.I askedherwhatthemostsurprisingthingshe’slearnedabout herselfonherfitness/runningjourney,andshesaidherprimary goalwasjusttofinishherfirstmarathon,but“Ineverwould haveexpectedmyselftogetfaster.”Shecontinuedwith“but afterafewmore,Istartedtoimproveandwhatusedtosound impossibleisarealgoal.”
Hillary’sweeklyfitnessroutineconsistsof“3or4“easy”paced runsof4-5miles,aspeedworkoutof7-8miles(almostalways doneonatreadmillattheJ),andalongrunof16-20mileson theweekend,plus2or3strengthtrainingsessionsonthe machinesintheJ’sfitnesscenter.”Ifthisroutinesoundstoo challenging,Hillaryhasadviceforthosewhohaveneverrun beforebutwanttostart,“signupfora5Kafewmonthsoutfor motivation,andthenjustgooutandstart!”

Allchildrenthenparticipatedinaschool-widePassover ExperienceattheendofMarch.Thisprogramisdesignedtogo beyondtheusualmodelSeder,bycreatingahands-on experienceofthePassoverstory.Groupsofchildrenparticipate instationsthatrepresenttheexperienceoftheIsraelitesinthe Exodusstory.Thestorymovesthechildrenfrombeingtoldto buildblockcitiesforpharaoh,throughsimulatedexperiences withseveraloftheplagues,includingfrogs,hail,locustand darkness,finallytogothroughtheRedSeatofreedom.Moses andPharaohhelpguidethechildrenandmakethestorycometo life.
DuringPassover,thechildrenwillreadPassoverstories,sing PassoverSongs,andparticipateinfunPassover-themedgames andactivities.Anothertraditionwehaveiscreatingkosher Passoversnacks.Theywillmaketraditionalfoods,suchas MatzahBallSoupaswellasnewfavoritessuchasMatzahPizza.
