Thisfall,weareexcitedtobeginanewschoolyearatthe BlockandDreebenSchoolforYoungChildren,where classroomsarefilledwithcuriosity,creativity,andthejoyof learning.Eachafternoon,KidsClubAfterSchoolwelcomes studentsforhomeworksupport,enrichment,andtimewith friendsaftertheschooldayends.ThroughouttheCampus, children,teens,adults,andolderadultsarediscoveringnew opportunitiesthroughyouthsports,enrichmentclasses, theatre,artsandculture,fitness,wellness,andlifelong learning.
Oneofmyfavoritethingsaboutthisseasonisseeing familiesreconnectwithfamiliarfaces,childrendiscovernew passions,andneighborsbecomefriends.Whetheryou're cheeringfromthesidelinesofasoccergame,tryingyour firstfitnessclass,attendingaculturalevent,orsimply stoppingbytosayhello,everyvisithelpsstrengthenthe senseofcommunitythatmakestheBarshopJCCsospecial.

WhenTonyLuvaraconvertedto JudaismandrelocatedtoSan AntoniofromPittsburghbywayof Washington,D.C.,hewaslooking formorethanagym.Hewantedto connectwiththeJewish
communitywhilealsomeetingpeoplefromacrossSanAntonio andlearningmoreaboutSouthTexasculture.Sincejoiningthe BarshopJCC,Tonyhasfoundexactlythat.Whilehespendsmuch ofhistimeintheFitnessCenter,healsoenjoystheJ'sauthor events,movies,seniorprograms,holidaycelebrations,and volunteeringwiththeJewishWarVeterans.Heespecially appreciatesthattherearemeaningfulopportunitiesforpeople ofeveryageandstageoflife.
Althoughfitnessisanimportantpartofhisroutine,Tonysaysit's thepeoplewhokeephimcomingback.Thefriendshipshe'sbuilt withpersonaltrainers,groupexerciseinstructors,staff,and fellowmembersmakeeveryvisitenjoyable,andhesayshe almostalwaysleavesinabettermoodthanwhenhearrived.
HisadvicefornewmembersistoexploreeverythingtheJhasto offer,askquestions,connectwithothermembers,andtake advantageofthewidevarietyofprogramsavailablethroughout thecommunity.
Whenaskedwhathecouldn'tlivewithout,Tony'sanswerwas simple:humanrelationships.Hebelievesthefriendshipsand connectionshe'smadethroughouthislifehaveenrichedhimfar morethananymaterialpossessionevercould.
Onememorystandsoutabovetherest.Duringaworkout,Tony experiencedasuddenboutofexhaustion.JCCstaffimmediately cametohisaid,monitoredhiscondition,andarrangedforhimto betakentotheemergencyroom.Theircompassionand professionalismleftalastingimpression.
