Holidays at the Preschool October is full of holiday celebrations at the JCC Block and Dreeben School for Young Children. We ended September and begin October learning about Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). The children will taste apples and honey, for a sweet new year, make Rosh Hashanah greeting cards, hear the Shofar, bake honey cake and share some round challah in addition to reading Rosh Hashanah stories and singing Rosh Hashanah songs. As we move into Yom Kippur, we focus on learning about the choices and mistakes we sometimes make. The older children will discuss what it means to take responsibility for those actions and what it means to apologize or correct the problem.

Next we move into the week-long celebration of Sukkot. The children will have several opportunities to visit the big campus Sukkah and create smaller sukkot in their classrooms. The children will have the opportunity to shake the Lulav and Etrog as well as dance and sing songs in the Sukkah. Classes will also create decorations to hang in the Sukkah. Each year we put up a special Mitzvah Sukkah and encourage families to write a mitzvah (good deed) their child has done on a paper fruit, attach a quarter to the back, and hang it in our Mitzvah Sukkah doing two mitzvot in one. This year, the Pre-K children will be selecting an organization that the money will go to, then teach the younger children about what it means to do a mitzvah and where the money will go.

L’Dor v’Dor Programing This year we are relaunching and expanding Pre-K/older adult programing through the creation of the L’Dor v’Dor Program. L’Dor v’Dor means “from generation to generation,” reflecting the Jewish value of our responsibility to pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

The program kicked off appropriately enough with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The children visited the older adults in September and shared apples and honey for a sweet New Year. In October we will join together to have a snack in the Sukkah to fulfill the mitzvot of welcoming guests and sharing a meal in the Sukkah. On November 12, we will celebrate Thanksgiving with the return of our intergenerational Thanksgiving Luncheon. We look forward to many more opportunities for intergenerational connections throughout the year.

Director of the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children

Meet the Director and Assistant Director of the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children Director Calla Pfiefer-Campos camposc@jcc-sa.org Calla Pfeifer-Campos has been with the JCC Block and Dreeben School for Young Children for over 18 years.

During her time at the school, Calla has been a Pre-K Teacher, Assistant Director, Curriculum Director and is now excited to take on the role of School Director. In addition to staff roles, Calla has also been the parent of two children who attended the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children. Calla has a BA in Communications from UTSA where she also completed the PostBaccalaureate Teacher Certification program.

Assistant Director Dylan Ashworth ashworthd@jcc-sa.org Dylan has been a valued member of the JCC, working in both the Early Childhood and Youth and Camp Departments.

Returning to the Early Childhood Department marks a full-circle moment for Dylan, who previously taught Pre-Kindergarten here. Since 2010, Dylan has held various roles in the Youth Department, including serving as the JCamp Director for the past five summers. Additionally, he has led several Team San Antonio delegations as the JCC Maccabi Delegation Head since 2003. Dylan is excited to return to the Block and Dreeben School of Young Children, where both of his children attended.

Meet the Director and Program Coordinator of our Youth & Camp Department Director Ethan Hajduk hajduke@jcc-sa.org Born and raised in San Antonio, Ethan graduated from UTSA with a bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies.

He joined the J in the first week after high school graduation and has been committed ever since.

Starting as a summer camp counselor, Ethan quickly fell in love with the work and has since advanced to Director of Youth and Camp. He is dedicated to helping future leaders reach their full potential, which drives his passion for this work. Outside of work, Ethan enjoys fishing, spending time with family, and preparing for the next year's Summer Camp.

Program Coordinator Katie Gates gatesk@jcc-sa.org Katie Gates moved to San Antonio, Texas at the age of 8 and quickly began attending many different JCC youth programs. She made her JCC debut in the JCC’s youngest theatre program, NOVA, as an Oompa Loompa in Willy Wonka. She continued to spend much of her time at the JCC, attending the JCC Summer Camps, continuing her small acting career in NOVA and STARZ, and joining the Kids Club after school program! She eventually went on to attend Texas State University while returning each year as a camp counselor and eventually an administrator! In Fall 2023 she graduated with a Finance degree and turned to the JCC to start her career path. She is now extremely proud and excited to have returned as the Youth and Camp Program Coordinator working year-round to produce NOVA and STARZ productions, assist with seasonal camps and kids club, and continue administering and participating in the Summer Camp program that all holds a special place in her heart!
