As the summer season comes to an end, it's the ideal moment to refresh your eating routine and get back into a regular schedule. A short meal-prep session each Sunday can carry you through the busy week while keeping nutrition on track.

Start by cooking two cups of quinoa, soaking and pressure‑cooking a pot of beans or lentils, and roasting a sheet pan of mixed vegetables. Store each component in clear containers so vibrant colors invite you to build quick bowls, salads, or wraps instead of reaching for convenience foods.

Protein is the season’s unsung hero. Aim for 20–30 grams at every meal to protect muscle, stabilize blood sugar, and curb cravings. Easy sources include nut or seed butters, cottage cheese, hard‑boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, canned wild fish, and an occasional scoop of quality protein powder blended into a smoothie.

Hydration is just as important. Dehydration often masquerades as hunger, so keep a reusable bottle within reach and sip throughout the day. Add a squeeze of citrus or a sprig of mint if plain water feels dull.

Message from The CEO Where Community and Culture Meet and Grow As we step into a new season and a new year, we’re reminded of all the ways our J continues to serve as a hub for connection, celebration and collective growth. Rosh Hashanah (and the fall season) bring opportunities to reflect on what we’ve accomplished or experienced and to invest in where we’re going.

On November 15, we invite you to join us for Main Event, our signature annual fundraiser and a vibrant celebration where Jewish culture will take center stage and our community comes together. Through music, flavors, traditions and spirit, we’ll honor what makes our community shine. Your support benefits youth and senior services, scholarship programs, and future projects at the JCC through the Walter and Reba Viner Charitable Fund.

Before then, we’re also proud to participate in The Big Give, San Antonio’s citywide day of giving, taking place September 17–18. It’s a meaningful way to show your pride in the J while joining a larger movement of generosity across the city.

Looking ahead, in 2026 we will celebrate the 25th annual Jewish Film Festival. This important milestone is a reminder of the value that film brings to educating, entertaining and enriching our community. A Family Connection the J, The Davis family makes it a family affair. Greg Davis’s 51 years Strong

connection to the JCC began in childhood. He still fondly remembers taking the #5 bus route to get to the J where he spent summers as a camp CIT (Counselor in Training). Greg grew up at the JCC, participating in camp and the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO), a Jewish youth organization that promotes community and leadership. As a young adult he used the fitness facilities and stayed active with social programming which led to lifelong friendships. Even throughout college and a move to Dallas afterward, Greg continued to support the JCC. Today, Greg Davis’s connections to the J are as strong as ever; he coaches youth sports when he can, and says that watching kids grow “as young people, not just athletes, learning life lessons of working together and handling both success and failure has been a gift they have given me.”

The Davis family continues this tradition. The JCC is a birth through life institution and the Davis family involvement certainly reflects that. Some of the Davis kids have attended the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children, others have attended camp, even being a CIT (just like Dad). The kids have also used the after-school program, and participated in youth sports. In the warmer months, you’ll even see the Davis family enjoying the pool together.

Greg’s commitment to the J and to his family is inspiring. He’s dedicated so much of his life to building community not only for his own family, but also for the many families he’s impacted through coaching and mentorship. Greg’s family values run deep.

When asked about the one thing he could not live without, Greg said “Family Dinner,” and added “when you have five kids with a large age range, getting everybody under one roof is a treasureit’s something I wouldn’t want to live without.”

ARTISTIC JOURNEY, FOGIEL GIFT SHOP SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL ARTISTS September 2025 Artist Hispanic artist and advocate Monica Berlanga was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. Her years in Austin shaped both her artistic voice and her commitment to equality, including her recognized role in the 2011 repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and her continued work with the Modern Military Association of America. Monica’s Monica Berlanga art is both a personal sanctuary and a form of healing. Working in

mixed media and acrylics, her pieces explore themes of inner light, resilience, and emotional connection. Influenced by dreams, spiritual energy, and sensory experience, her work offers a visual language for feelings often left unspoken. With over a decade of advocacy for mental health and self-care, Monica’s work gives voice to what words often cannot. Through color, symbolism, and spiritual energy, she invites viewers to pause, reflect, and feel seen.

Her art is not only an expression of personal truth but also a way to give back, supporting causes like Equal Rights, Autism Awareness, and Mental Health. Each piece is a ripple of hope and a reminder that authenticity creates space for collective healing and change.

Jewish Journeys Upcoming High Holidays Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year— 5786 on the Hebrew calendar. In 2025, it begins at sundown on Monday, September 22 and ends at nightfall on Wednesday, September 24. The holiday is celebrated with synagogue services and festive meals featuring sweet foods like apples dipped in honey to symbolize a sweet year ahead. A common greeting is “Shanah Tovah Umetukah”—“a good and sweet year.”

Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 1 and concludes the evening of Thursday, October 2. It is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, observed through a 25-hour fast, prayer, and reflection. Greetings during this time include “Tzom Kal” (an easy fast) and “Gmar Chatimah Tovah” (may you be sealed in the Book of Life).

Sukkot begins at sundown on Monday, October 6 and runs through Monday, October 13. This joyful, seven-day harvest festival commemorates the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. Families celebrate by building temporary outdoor structures called sukkahs and spending time eating, relaxing, and connecting inside them.

Whether you’re new to our program or a returning family, we are thrilled to build upon the amazing programming we developed last school year.

In addition to day-to-day learning, we will be hosting family events and offering school-wide opportunities for your child.

Some of these highlights include: Celebrating and learning about various Jewish holidays through engaging holiday experiences.

Inviting families to join us for our monthly community Shabbat celebrations.

Hosting fall and spring playground picnics so families can connect and get to know one another.

Continuing our Pre-Kinder collaboration with older adults through our L’dor V’dor programming throughout the year.

And more exciting events to come!

From my unique vantage point—whether I’m in classrooms or greeting families at the door—I get to witness the incredible growth and confidence that develops in each child throughout the school year.

I see the infant who begins the year barely walking and ends it confidently stepping into the building. The toddler who learns to form their first words and surprises me by saying my name.

The shy Pre-K student who transforms into a confident, kindergarten-ready kiddo, greeting me with a fist bump as they pass by.

10 Aquatics and Recreation JCC YOUTH SWIM CLUB: Where Young Swimmers Grow & Compete The JCC Swim Club, staffed by professional coaches, offers a swim program for recreational, fitness, and competitive swimmers. Recreational classes focus on stroke technique and endurance training, while competitive Bronze, Silver, and Gold swimmers can participate in USA swim meets throughout the season.

Coaches may adjust swimmer placements to ensure the best fit for each individual's ability.
