Developing a love of reading can change children’s lives.

Young people who make the jump from learning to read to loving to read don’t only become better readers – they become better learners across the board. Their literacy skills are consolidated, their horizons are broadened and they are better able to succeed in school and ultimately in life.

Yet many children fail to get the reading bug. Almost every school in the country counts among its student cohort keen readers, struggling readers, and young people who can read but don’t.

There are many reasons for reading difficulty and reading reluctance, from specific learning difficulties and disenchantment with beginner books to a lack of family time and increased competition from gaming or online chatting.

About Barrington Stoke books Children who read for pleasure enjoy significant advantages in education and in life. But making reading a pleasure for struggling and reluctant students can be a challenge, especially as many face real barriers to accessing print, including learning difficulties specific or otherwise, poor attention span and negative perceptions of reading.

Barrington Stoke was established by literacy and SEN experts working in partnership with professional trade publishers to identify and overcome the difficulties experienced by young people with SpLD, language and learning difficulties or reading reluctance with roots in other issues.

The design and editing of our books is informed by understanding of the process of reading itself and the obstacles facing these readers:

Our books are punchy, with accessible word-lengths supplemented by plenty of chapter breaks to provide rest stops for readers who have not yet built reading stamina (while cliff-hangers incentivise them to return!)

Most importantly of all, our books are brilliant stories written by some of the best children’s authors in the UK. Our books are available at three broad interest ages (5-9, 7-12 and 11+) and at five reading ages (6, 6.5, 7, 8 and 8+, or NC Levels 1-3). Books are edited to offer particular accessibility in opening chapters as research shows that readers’ confidence increases as they move through a text. As a rough guide, a book is at the right level for a reader if (s)he can read a page of text without struggling over five words or more.

Our Authors At Barrington Stoke, we believe that books should be uplifting, engaging, exciting, intriguing and inspiring. We hate to hear a book described as ‘written for reluctant readers’. Reluctant readers are not a homogenous group and while it’s perfectly possible to reduce barriers to comprehension and help anyone access text more easily, it’s not possible to say who struggling and reluctant readers are, or what they like. Dyslexia, after all, affects 7% of the population and reading reluctance as many as one in two.

Our list is based on the core principle that reluctant and struggling readers deserve the best – the best writers, the best illustrators, and the best covers, finishes and design available. We are incredibly fortunate to be joined in this belief by many of the best writers and illustrators in the UK. We publish Carnegie Medallists, Children’s Laureates, international bestsellers, and national treasures. Using our books in school to boost all your students’ attainment Barrington Stoke books can help you raise attainment among less confident and strong readers alike. We hope the following suggestions give you some ideas for using the books at the chalk face.

End the excerpts tyranny A complete story is more satisfying than an excerpt and helps students understand style better, but many teachers turn to excerpts due to time constraints. Titles like our moving Fox Friend by Michael Morpurgo are ideal short class novels. There’s plenty of depth, and everyone can read the book in a few sessions, leaving you plenty of time to explore themes and elements of the author’s craft. Boost all your students’ reading with paired reading In paired reading, students read aloud to each other. A fluent reader is usually paired with a less fluent reader, often a younger child. Some schools call these pairings ‘reading buddies’. Studies show there is an added benefit to the practice – the confident reader’s reading ability improves as well.

Support serious strugglers with guided reading Struggling readers may benefit from reading with an adult, which provides opportunities to check and develop comprehension.
