Welcome to issue 25 I

firstly want to thank you all for your hard work and dedication after another strong operational and financial performance in FY19, and I’m glad to see we’re making a strong start to FY20.

As always our focus remains on leading the industry by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do. We’ve demonstrated our commitment to quality and customer service by once again being awarded 5 Stars in the HBF’s Customer Satisfaction Survey – for the tenth year in row – a fantastic achievement for our teams.

Our Site Managers also won more Pride in the Job Awards than any other housebuilder for the 15th year in a row.

Our record in these two areas is more important than ever as customers and the media scrutinise housebuilders.

Their focus on the service provided and the quality of new builds means it is vital that we continue to lead the industry in these areas, helping to set us apart from our competitors.

In celebration of us achieving the maximum 5 Star rating for the tenth consecutive year, all employees have been given a special award of 200 shares,

for the second year in a row.

We recently welcomed new colleagues to the Group following our acquisition of Oregon, supporting our aims of using more Modern Methods of Construction on site and to build more homes. In this issue of Foundations you’ll be able to read more about the acquisition and hear from the one of the joint MDs. As always, health and safety remains our number priority and the recent tragic fatality underlines this. We must remain focused on ensuring the highest standards of safety in everything we do. One way of doing this is by working with our suppliers and sub-contractors to improve the safety of machinery used on site, with further information about this in the issue.

This issue of Foundations looks at our different charity partners and how the business is working with them to support local communities, plus there’s an update on the Barratt Charity Plan.

Special Share Award As you’ll be aware, in celebration of us achieving the maximum 5 Star rating in the HBF Customer Satisfaction Survey for the tenth consecutive year, all employees below Managing Director level have been given a special award of 200 shares, with part time employees receiving a pro rata award.

This is the second year in a row that we’ve recognised our employees’ hard work and dedication in this way, following our 60th anniversary share award last year.

It’s important for us that, as we enjoy these achievements, we share this success with the people who make this possible for now and in years to come.

All eligible employees should have now received an email from barratt@howells-associates.com with details on how to access the Barratt Share Portal, with the deadline to accept the award 31 August 2019. MyHR update MyHR Employee Self-Service has now been rolled out to all employees across the business, including to weekly paid colleagues onsite, meaning everyone can view and update their personal details as well as access their ePayslips online. Three quarters of office based, and well over half of site-based employees have accessed the system – more than 4,750 colleagues.

Eliminating paper forms to update your personal details gives you greater control over your information with MyHR accessible securely, at any time, via smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs and PCs in the UK. You are encouraged to start using MyHR regularly as more processes that are currently paper-based will be moved online.

For example, holiday booking is being tested and will be the only way of requesting leave in the future.

New Building Safety Charter launched We’ve joined together with other developers, contractors and housing associations to launch a new Building Safety Charter in a call to action to raise the bar for building safety.

As a member of the Early Adopters Group, which was established last summer following Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety following the Grenfell fire, we have signed the Charter which commits companies to prioritise residents’ safety at every stage of a building’s lifespan.

The Early Adopters Group has been trialling new systems and ways of working in advance of any proposed changes to legislation. Examples of work the group has taken forward include testing how residents and contractors can report building faults in a confidential, no-blame process.

Gary Ennis, RMD London & Southern said: “The new Building Safety Charter will help pave the way for real change within our sector, and as members of the Early Adopters Group, we're pleased to be one of the first to sign it, demonstrating our continued commitment to putting safety first.”

To help you become more familiar with logging in, details are now provided in a handy business card that’s been issued to everyone across the Group. Contact your HR coordinator if you have not yet received one.

Feedback for MyHR has been overwhelmingly positive, with people saying ‘the functionality and user-friendliness of the system is very efficient and easy to use’. They like ‘good password options to ensure it is secure’, while someone added that it was ‘easy, even for IT dinosaurs!’

One of our five business principles, which guide our ways of working, is Keeping People Safe. Safety must come ahead of everything else that we do, and that’s why the NHBC Health and Safety Awards are so important. The awards recognise and reward the very best in health and safety, and drive up safety standards by showcasing best practice.

Celebrating success across the business Barratt London were announced triple award winners at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards. Blackfriars Circus was crowned Best Development of Architectural Merit, whilst Kidderpore Green won Best Family Home over £1.5m and Landmark Place was highly commended for Best Large Development.

Blackfriars Circus also won at this year’s Housing Design Awards under the Completed Developments category.

Our training and Diversity and Inclusion initiatives have been recognised at a number of awards recently. At the Homes for Scotland Awards, the East Scotland team won the Company Innovation and Best Practice award for our Building without Barriers programme. And at the Inspire Awards, which recognise diversity and inclusion in construction, we won Most Inspiring Employment Initiative for our ex-Armed Forces programme and were highly commended for Most Inspiring Training Programme.

At the Corporate Engagement Awards, which recognise the most successful and innovative corporate partnerships across a range of sectors, Barratt was awarded the Silver award for Best Environmental or Sustainable Programme for our work with the RSPB. And congratulations to apprentice joiner Jemma Sykes who has picked up two Apprentice of the Year awards at recent industry and trade events in Scotland, and will now be going forward to the national finals at the Federation of Master Builders Awards. .

Meet the Team: Filwood Park, Bristol

W

e spoke to the team at Filwood Park in our Bristol division, who are at the heart of a multimillion-pound regeneration scheme. The unique development of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes is just south of Bristol, with the team building 100 homes. The site is surrounded by lots of open space, with a play area for children to enjoy, helping to put the community at the heart of the development.

We hear from Liz Murphy, Sales Advisor, Chris Webber, Site Manager and Michael Webb, Assistant Site Manager about what it’s like to work on the site.

So Liz, tell us more about the development.

Filwood Park is aiming to provide a massive redevelopment of the area.

We are building to both a Code 3 criteria and Homes England standards, which means we have to meet larger square footages to the homes, solar panels, water butts and recycling bins. We are working closely with the local police to build ‘Secure by Design homes’.

So far it has proved to be very popular and we have sold everything we have released.

And what makes this site so unique?

brickwork really means it stands out for the community and adds something different to the area. It’s something we’re all really proud of and has proved popular with residents!

We’re also creating an ecological area in the park which we’re sure will prove popular with the kids and residents in years to come.

How’s progress with the site going?

Michael: We started construction on the site in October 2017 and we’re due to finish next June, so things are coming along well, we’ve had 47 completions so far. Everyone working on site, around 70 people, all take huge pride in this development and we’re all passionate about getting the house right for the customer.

It shows because Filwood Park is 100% recommended!

Changes to Long Service Awards Policy

Following feedback from the Employee Engagement Survey and Workforce Forum, the Long Service Awards Policy has been updated to change the type of award given for milestone service levels from a My Barratt Staff Shop voucher to cash.

This change in policy takes effect from 1 July 2019 and applies to all qualifiers whose anniversary date falls on or after 1 July 2019.

Enhancement to the Introduce a Friend Policy We think it’s important that our people are recognised and rewarded for attracting the best people to our business.

Following employee feedback the ‘Introduce A Friend’ scheme rules will be revised so that the introduction fee doubles from £500 to £1000 in recognition of a successful introduction.

Celebrating Long Service

n May we held our fourth annual Long Service Awards dinner in celebration of some of our fantastic colleagues. The dinner saw employees from across the country who were celebrating their 20, 25, 35 and 45 year anniversaries come together for an evening in London.

This year the evening was held at the Amba Hotel in London with all attendees also given an extra day of annual leave for the following day.

Employees shared anecdotes and memories of their time with the business with attendees describing the evening as “unforgettable”, “fantastic” and “thoroughly enjoyable”. One attendee even said they would

“advise any member of staff to attend”.

In 1974, when our longest standing attendees joined the business, Barratt were building on over 100 developments in England and Scotland and selling more than 3,000 new homes a year, New Year’s Day was celebrated as a public holiday for the first time, McDonald’s opened their first UK restaurant in Woolwich and Brighton hosted the 19th Eurovision Song Contest.

Long service is recognised locally at five-yearly intervals across the business from five years’ service.

Those celebrating long service milestones from 20 years onwards are also given a cash gift and are invited to the Long Service Awards Dinner.

Team Golden Bricks

T

his year our graduates are supporting Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) as they celebrate their 100th year of improving the lives of veterans, those with disabilities and unemployed people. In addition to fundraising, they are going to gain invaluable project management skills through delivering two fantastic projects at the RBLI village in Aylesford, Kent.

Housing SOS legacy project There are several properties in need of renovation across the RBLI village, and the graduates are going to prepare a development portfolio for a semidetached property that is currently uninhabitable. This will include drawings, survey reports and a cost plan, which will then be passed onto the next ASPIRE cohort to deliver, along with a financial contribution towards the works.

The team successfully pitched their business plan to a panel of judges in a Dragon’s Den style pitch and won £1,500 of seed funding. They were praised for their levels of preparation and ability to answer questions, and now their task is to use this money to raise as much as possible for RBLI. Each graduate has also pledged to raise £1,000 through a variety of different individual challenges. From skydives and abseils to bake sales and quiz nights, they are determined to reach their targets!

Centenary celebration This October they will also host an evening of celebration to mark RBLI’s 100th anniversary and fundraise for their projects. The evening will involve recognising the hard work and dedication of RBLI employees and veterans through a number of awards, and there will also be fundraising throughout the evening with a live auction and raffle.

This summer team Golden Bricks are going to deliver a multi-sensory, accessible garden designed specifically for residents facing challenges due to dementia. The garden will be located at Gavin Astor House, the care home within the RBLI Village, and will provide a valuable outdoor space for residents and their families to relax and enjoy.

A

s a business we put health and safety first by committing to the highest industry standards and want it to be a core value for everyone.

There can be nothing more important and we all play a vital role in ensuring that everyone on our sites has the right to go home at the end of their working day.

We’re continually looking at ways that we can improve safety out on site, and one key way of doing this is through machinery.

It plays a big part on site and our subcontractors are constantly looking for ways to improve our safety whilst using them.

In March… we released a new Lifting Plan for our telehandlers which provides our drivers with information on how they should be lifting equipment around site.

Welcoming Oregon to the Group!

A In June we were delighted to welcome Oregon to the Group as we acquired 100% of Oregon Timber Frame Ltd, one of the leading timber frame manufacturers in the UK.

s we celebrate our tenth year as a 5 Star housebuilder, it is important that we continue to lead the industry by focusing on and delivering against our priorities and principles. One of our priorities is Leading Construction – and this includes investing in and embracing new methods of on and offsite construction.

It is our aspiration to continue to grow the number of homes we build, but to do this we must lessen the challenges of the industry’s skills shortage, and so we have been exploring options to grow the offsite construction part of the business.

"We also believe that the closer collaboration between the ‘house designer’ and the ‘timber frame designer’ will provide real opportunities to make the houses faster, more efficiently and with less waste."

FOUNDATIONS

Timber frame plots can be constructed quickly, in around 10-12 weeks, and the frames are lightweight and do not require over engineered foundations. This means they are less labourintensive, are well suited to brownfield sites with poor soil and cheaper than traditional brick and block. Timber frame is also a renewable source and has one of the lowest embodied energies, meaning its use can help to reduce CO2 and other emissions.

They specialise in the design, manufacture and erection of high quality timber frame superstructures, and currently manufacture around 2,000 units each year with a workforce of 170 employees. Their teams are highly experienced and skilled and, like us, they prioritise innovation, customer service and health and safety.

“In order to achieve our long term growth aspirations, we needed the bigger housing developers in England to fully recognise the benefits of timber frame construction and commit to building in volume."

Oregon are already supplying timber frame systems to our business, and they operate from factories in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders and Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire.

Going forward they will report into Regional Managing Director, Douglas McLeod. The current joint Managing Directors of Oregon, Peter Wade and Kenny Dunkley, will continue running the business as normal.

We currently use timber frame build on the majority of residential properties we build in Scotland and are increasing its use across England and Wales. Our internal target is for 25% of all our homes to use some form of MMC by 2025, and this means that timber frame is a key growth area for us.

Oregon is one of the leading manufacturers of high quality timber frame, established in 1998.

It’s great to welcome Oregon to the business and we look forward to working together to continue to deliver high quality new homes and putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

We hear from one of the Joint Managing Directors, Peter Wade, about working with Barratt: The Oregon management team were excited when we were approached

by Barratt as we could see the opportunities for future growth. Timber frame is the default method of construction in Scotland and Oregon has managed to grow a significant share of this market over the years, however, we have always known that large future growth could only come from England. ur approach to sustainability since 2016 has been based around six key issues. In winter we carried out a new survey and 14 interviews with a range of stakeholders including employees, investors, suppliers and industry bodies to check we’re still focusing on the right priorities. 461 stakeholders took part in the survey including 376 employees – thanks to all who responded. Here are some highlights: •8 4% felt we should position ourselves as the market leader on sustainability.

Our offices created over 4,000m3 of waste last year, with over 90% of us disposing of paper waste and 35% of plastics at our desks each day.

Making places work for nature To offset the impacts of new developments on native species, we’re seeking to create a net gain for biodiversity in design across all new developments (where there is no prior planning permission) from 2020.

We’ve developed principles and guidance to help shape industry practice and government policy through consultations and working with a range of organisations.

The upcoming Environment Bill will be more applicable to our industry following our input into recent consultations.

And through our partnership with the RSPB we've been helping to give nature a home: •2 ,000 swift nesting bricks: supplied to the industry as a result of our work with RSPB and Manthorpe.

Suppliers moved by Greta’s call At the annual supplier conference, the ‘Challenge and Change’ sustainability slot was kicked off with a video of Greta Thunberg, explaining the scale and pace of change required to limit global warming to below 1.5 C. Paul Toyne, London Sustainable Development Commissioner and government advisor, talked about climate, resilience and resource scarcity. Our Head of Corporate Sustainability, Sarah Pratt, then called for our suppliers to innovate and bring ideas to the table to help solve future challenges we all face together.

Clearing the air With an estimated 40,000 deaths each year in the UK resulting from air pollution, we’ve been looking at ways we can reduce our diesel use, a key cause of poor air quality.

Here are some of the ways we address it: • Speeding up site compound electric connections to the mains.

• On larger sites we are using hybrid generators that store excess energy at times of lower demand to release it when demand is higher.

• Solar supported diesel generators are being trialled and are already showing sizeable reductions in diesel use before grid connection.

An update from our Workforce Forum

T

o help us better engage with our employees and get input from colleagues on decisions we make as a business, last year we launched the Workforce Forum.

The forum, which has nominated colleagues from across the regions and GSC, and represents a cross section of our business, has now met three times in the past year to discuss a range of topics.

Forum Members went to our national kitchen providers, Symphony, in January and had a tour round their show room and factory after the meeting.

The group also heard about a number of business improvement projects which are currently going on, to help improve our ways of working.

At Barratt Developments, one of our priorities is investing in our people to create a great place to work, founded on an open and honest culture. The Workplace Forum puts this priority at the forefront of Barratt by providing a line of communication between management and employees within the company to share ideas, which allows employees’ voices to be heard at the highest levels of the business. By having a presence in divisions, the members are able to feedback on how new ideas and systems work for employees day to day, to make sure they work as efficiently as possible

At their most recent meeting in May, Chief Operating Officer Steven Boyes attended and thanked the members for their continued commitment to the forum and reiterated the importance of the group for the business, to be able to have an employee voice and response on a range of topics.

During the meeting, the group heard about the updates that are being made to the My Barratt Benefits site as a result of their input, and the new career progression paths which are being discussed following their feedback.

The focus of the latest meeting was around our 2019 Employee Engagement Survey results and actions that the business as a whole could take as a result of the feedback, with suggestions put forward by forum members.

We spoke to Tracey Dickens, Commercial Director from East Midlands and Darren Haygarth, Accounts Assistant from Southern Counties to hear how they’ve found being involved:

Constructed on former shipyard land on the banks of the River Clyde, Waterside is a striking, high-density development by our West Scotland division, delivering 60 bespoke apartments and 31 townhouses. The orientation and scale of the design were heavily influenced by the existing properties in the surrounding area, in order to identify with the site’s industrial past and ensure the development feels like an integral part of the Renfrew waterfront. A riverside walkway draws residents to a viewing platform and amenity space at the river’s edge, with unparalleled views.

Barratt East London has recently achieved its first round of completions, as well as Built for Life accreditation, at its Ridgeway Views development in Mill Hill, Barnet. The site, previously the Medical Research Council’s National Institute of Medical Research, will deliver 460 homes, commercial units, a café, gym, public realm, play spaces, sports pitches, meadow land and two ponds for biodiversity. The tiered nature of the site has been retained, along with 3445 existing trees, and offers leafy views over the Totteridge Valley.

Shaped by a desire to retain existing natural features including hedgerows and trees to create a sustainable urban extension to the immediate north of Newcastle, North Gosforth Park is a development of 167 homes that has drawn heavily on landscape-led design principles. The scheme, by BDW North East, will be completed by summer 2020, due to timber frame construction of the standard Barratt housetypes.

Strong customer demand is supported by the close proximity of excellent motorway links, with the A1 passing by the west of the site.

Once completed in its entirety, Lawley Village in Telford will comprise around 3500 homes, made up of four neighbourhoods, as well as offices, restaurants, a primary school, parklands and shops.

West Midlands’ proposal for Phase 7 is for 267 new units, with a mix of storey heights ranging from 2 to 3 storeys.

Pedestrian access to and from the neighbourhood’s central green corridor has been improved and an existing cycle way provides an opportunity to create good pedestrian and cycling connectivity with the site’s surroundings.

BDW South Wales are currently underway with a dual-branded development at Goitre Fach, to the north west of Cardiff. The scheme delivers 263 new homes to suit local needs, utilising the Barratt 2016 and DWH-7 ranges.

Strong Green Infrastructure connectivity was a key requirement of the local authority, providing seamless green routes to the surrounding landscape and valuable habitat connections. The development’s location has been identified as a key sustainable transport corridor, including new bus routes, the delivery of a cycle ‘super route’ and a comprehensive network of walking routes.

Kingfisher Meadows, located to the north of Witney, consists of 260 homes with a mixture of tenures, ranging from 2 to 5 bed homes. The planning application for this DWH scheme was one of the fastest approved applications that Mercia has completed. It was the first site to be designed in-house from feasibility through to a Reserved Matters planning application.

The development has three distinct character areas to create a sense of place.

Architecturally, the houses exhibit formal proportion, arts and crafts and cottage vernacular design.

North Thames’ scheme for 492 homes at Oakfield Village, Kingsbrook takes inspiration from the Garden Cities of Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City.

The proposal makes significant improvements to the flood defence strategy for the wider area, helping to reinstate natural water courses and providing a regional wetlands park. Existing areas of ecological value will be protected, enhanced and managed by the provision of a Biodiversity Action Plan for habitats and species. The roof orientation of dwellings is designed to optimise opportunities to provide solar collectors and PV cells.

Oakwood Grange is a scheme for 500 units, split equally with Croudace Homes. Of the 250 units, 165 will be delivered by DWH Southern and 85 by Barratt Southern Counties. The scheme has had various challenges and constraints, including multiple landowners, a fixed housing mix (as set in Outline planning conditions), Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace provision (SANG), flood plain, public rights of way and consideration of an adjoining, future commercial development. The scheme successfully achieved 11 out of 12 ‘green’ ratings for Building for Life last year.

Planning permission has been achieved by BDW Kent for 250 homes at Dickens Gate in Staplehurst. The scheme utilises the latest DWH standard product, ranging from two bedroom homes to large five bedroom detached homes. The design takes full advantage of the ecological constraints of the site, with the creation of a designated wildlife meadow, the enhancement and management of existing ponds and the creation of walking routes for local residents. A large area of open space at the heart of the development forms a key focal point and also mitigates against flooding.

Harts Meadow is a DWH scheme by our Exeter division, comprising 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes. The 72 unit scheme is set in Monkerton, a small hamlet in the village of Pinhoe, on the outskirts of Exeter. The community overlooks a fantastic area of open space with a tree-lined footpath towards the local facilities and train station, with bench stops along the way.

The development is perfect for a diverse community of families, downsizers and professionals.

Celebrating our Pride in the Job Award Winners

he NHBC Pride in the Job Awards recognise the highest standards in housebuilding, with winners selected from more than 16,000 site managers working on sites across the country.

84 of our site managers won NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Awards this year and were recognised for their consistent quality, technical skills, attention to detail, leadership, customer service and site safety.

This exceptional number of awards, more than any other housebuilder for 15 years running, demonstrates our commitment to delivering the highest quality homes and striving for excellence across all aspects of construction.

We spoke to Luke Darby, Site Manager from our West Midlands division, about the awards, challenges faced on his site in Bromsgrove, and the key to being a successful site manager. rby Luke Da How did you and your team secure a 2019 Pride in the Job Award?

My team and I secured our second successful Pride in the Job Award through consistency and dedication to handing over a high level product. We were committed to ensuring that all stages throughout the build programme were on point.

How much does the award mean to you?

What do you think is your best trait at work?

The award gives recognition to the whole team who have worked really hard and truly deserve it. It is a fantastic achievement!

What challenges have you faced working on Norton Farm?

There were a number of challenges faced on site at Norton Farm. Given that this is a consortium site, we were required to work over existing water mains and all aspects of build from bungalows to apartments. The site is on an extremely vast gradient with mass retainment which posed an additional challenge. Use of Large Format Block, a modern method of construction, meant reinventing the wheel to get the best out of the system.

As a result we reached 105 completions in the first financial year followed by 87 in the second.

I enjoy the challenge. I need to be kept busy and this job certainly does that.

I am never left looking for something to do. I always push for the perfect finish and the smile on the customer's face makes it all worthwhile.

What key piece of advice would you offer to someone aspiring to be a site manager?

Approach the job with a good work ethic and always be willing to learn. No matter what your role, you can always continue learning. As a site manager, thinking outside the box to get the best out of the team you are leading is crucial.

Building without Barriers

R

esearch shows that diverse and inclusive workplaces are happier, have increased creativity and better reflect the local community. Here at Barratt, we want to ‘build without barriers’. We value everyone for who they are and the unique contribution they bring to customers, colleagues and the communities we create.

Over the past couple of years we’ve undertaken lots of activity to support our desire to have a diverse and inclusive business.

This includes supporting paid disability work placements, increased coverage of events such as Pride and International Women’s Day as well as Diversity and Inclusion training for more than 800 leaders across the business.

We’re proud to announce that some of these initiatives have recently won awards. Our recent successes include: W inner of the Company Innovation and Best Practice Award at the Homes for Scotland Awards

The final section of our three-part Catalyst programme aimed to develop women with the potential to do more senior roles, was held in February. The final event welcomed a keynote speaker from the London Business Forum and was also attended by our Chairman John Allan and Chief Executive David Thomas.

In other exciting news, our first employee led network was recently formed. The network was promoted as the gender equality employee-led network and colleagues from around the business got in contact to be a part of this new initiative. The network is now known as Under One Roof and will be launching its mission statement and aims to the business shortly.

Moving forwards, we remain committed to delivering our strategy which is made up of three key areas: Accountable Leadership, Employer of Choice and Customer Focus. Some of the specific aims include creating more balance between the numbers of women, LGBT+, disabled people and minority groups across the business and striving to create an inclusive environment that fosters creativity and innovation.

As ever, we have plenty more in the pipeline including the rollout of Dignity and Respect Toolbox Talks, a continued focus on supporting flexible working and the development of our Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic strategy.

t’s important for us as a business to give back to the communities we work in, and one of the ways we are doing this is through corporate partnerships. These partnerships allow us to not only provide financial support to fantastic causes, but also to share ideas and best practice over a significant period of time.

St. Mungo’s This year, in celebration of achieving our HBF 5 Star Customer Satisfaction Rating for a tenth consecutive year, we announced a three year partnership with homelessness charity St. Mungo’s worth £500,000. This is to fund their innovative ‘Putting Down Roots’ programme, which helps vulnerable people improve their physical and mental wellbeing through social gardening.

Last year we donated £750,000 to help RBLI expand their village in Kent, which provides support and accommodation to veterans and their families. Their values align closely with our own, particularly in providing ex- Armed Forces personnel with employment support, and they are the chosen charity for this year’s graduate cohort.

Mates in Mind

Whizz-Kidz

Last year we also launched a partnership with Mates in Mind, which provides a framework to raise awareness, address the stigma of poor mental health and improve positive mental wellbeing within the construction industry. As part of this, we will be rolling out training to our line managers across the business to support them in facilitating conversations about mental health with employees.

We’ve been working with Whizz-Kidz for a number of years to help provide disabled children with the essential mobility equipment they need. Not only have our London marathon runners got involved with this fantastic cause, but we have also worked closely with the ‘Kidz Board’, who have offered advice on how we can make our developments more wheelchair friendly.

RSPB Our partnership with the RSPB is now in its fifth year, with an overall mission to improve the way in which nature and wildlife are incorporated into our developments. Through this partnership, we have worked with Manthorpe to design a swift nesting brick to be used on our developments in cities where swifts have recently faced their largest decline, and created a garden guide to help bring wildlife friendly gardens to our developments and customers.

Canine Partners We have recently agreed that Canine Partners will become the David Wilson Homes charity partner. Canine Partners transforms the lives of disabled people by partnering them with assistance dogs to provide greater independence and quality of life, and to launch our partnership we have sponsored a puppy named Wellington!

Barratt & David Wilson Community Fund Since January, our divisions have donated £1,000 a month to good causes across the country through the Barratt & David Wilson Community Fund. We have supported a number of different charities and community organisations including: Air Ambulance, Armadillo Youth Café, Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, Magic Moments, Mental Health Aberdeen and St Mungo’s.

Big Barratt Hike 2019 Following on from the success and interest in the two hiking events we took part in last year, this year we have organised a Barratt employee event this September. The Big Barratt Hike 2019 will see 26 teams from across the business taking part in the 21-mile hike in the Peak District, with a well-deserved BBQ to celebrate afterwards! The teams will be fundraising £100,000 for Mind and the British Heart Foundation.

So far this year we have raised £310,000 through divisional fundraising and group matching. This is in addition to money raised through individual fundraising and matching and the Barratt & David Wilson Community Fund. Don’t forget that each division is able to apply for up to £15,000 of match funding a year, and can raise money for up to six different charities.
