This iconic apartment design at 261ft² opened up so many opportunities for people to own their own house in the early 1980’s. Thousands were built in two and three storey blocks, mainly in timber frame construction. They came fully carpeted and furnished, the bed being a fitment pulled out of the wall to save space with the marketing blurb being, ‘all you need is your knife and fork to move in’. As well as many showhouses, the Group also constructed mock-up show units of the Solo in several Army & Navy stores throughout the UK, so people could view and register interest when they were out shopping. Several derivatives of the Solo came later with one of them being the equally successful larger version called the Studio 2.
The Maidstone at 830ft² has been one of the most popular Barratt 3B/5P houses throughout the last thirty years. The Palmerston, equally popular, was the first version which comes without an en-suite at 776ft² and the Maidstone was introduced at the same width dimension as the Palmerston but stretched back to front a further 1.300m that created greater living space but more importantly, a first floor ensuite bathroom. In the early years the Maidstone could only be used in the South due to its greater build cost, but latterly both the Maidstone and Palmerston have been available for use throughout the Group. The Maidstone became so popular in recent years that the Ellerton housetype has been recently introduced as an alternative, not an option, on the same floorplate to add variety to site layouts.
