what is influenza?

Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a highly contagious virus that infects the nose, throat and lungs.

Sneezing and coughing releases infected droplets of mucous through the air, spreading the virus from person to person. Direct contact with the virus on hands or hard surfaces can also result in infection.

Influenza is responsible for major outbreaks of respiratory disease worldwide, and can result in life-threatening conditions such a pneumonia and bronchitis, which may require hospitalisation.

COMMON symptoms OF THE FLU: Some common symptoms of the flu include triedness, high fever, chills, headaches, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, muscle aches and poor appetite.

why should i get the flu vaccination?

Getting the influenza vaccination protects against infection with the main strains of influenza. As the viral strains each year change, so does the vaccination, therefore it is important to get the vaccination annually.

about the vaccination: The influenza vaccination is available at Barone Pharmacy without a prescription.

There are two types of influenza vaccinations available this year: trivalent and quadrivalent.

Trivalent influenza vaccinations cover the 3 main strains while quadrivalent cover 4 strains and is therefore more favourable. However, if the quadrivalent vaccination is not available, the trivalent form is an acceptable alternative.
