Andrew Vassiliou I am very sorry to say that in recent years my health has deteriorated to a state where I no longer can give my pigeons the time and attention that I would like to give them, heart respiratory and hip/knee problems have prevented me from doing this. As a result I am offering every pigeon I have for sale by Auction. In the sale there are approximately 36 Stock pigeons and 42 birds bred last year and raced this year. I started the year with around 140 young birds and very quickly my health as it did the previous year rapidly become worse. I sold 38 young birds from my race team prior to the first race of the year hoping to lighten the load and see an improvement in my health. I started racing with 102 birds in the team. I stopped any of the birds that won top 3 Combine positions from the 300 mile races and up this season. I flew the rest of the birds to 500 mile, 12 of the 13 birds I sent to the 500 mile race from Hawker this year made it home, 8 of them on the day. I trained seven hens to go to the 600 and 700 mile race but at the last minute decided that I would not race as my home town team GEELONG was in the Grand Final. I get pretty stressed race day and I really didn’t need the stress from both on the one day, so I decided I wouldn’t race and hopefully enjoy the glory of a win with the Cats. (GO CATS) I was 10 years old when I last saw them win a Grand Final. My birds are basically from two families, one family comprising of the South Australian pigeons from Ross Chapman and R&B Seedsman. The other family are my Emiel Deweerdts from the Tom Meehan Sale, Jack Smith Diamond Valley Club and the Emiel Deweerdts imported by Fred Dimella, John Sheer and Grant Patterson. I have purchased lots of other Deweerdts always trying to improve my birds but none were comparable to the ones I had and were removed. Both of my families have been bred by mating the best to best within their own families. I purposely line bred within the families to maintain their bloodline. I also did this to magnify the breeding and racing capabilities of these birds. As you can see the results were amazing. They continue to pass these needed traits from generation to generation A couple of years ago I tried crossing the families using some of the yearlings from my previous years race team and I sold their young at club fundraisers, I also gave a few away. The High performance of these birds was astounding. Last season I crossed a couple of my best Deweerdt cocks with the best Chapman/Seedsman Hens and the results were hard to believe. My birds have always and particularly this year consistently been in the leading drop, achieving combine positions in all of the races they have competed in. This is extremely difficult when you are, as I am a northern flyer and the predominant winds force the birds south of Ballarat. Since 1972 around 34years, the Central Highlands pigeon Combine has only been won 4 times by a Ballarat North Flyer, I being one of the 4 in 2003.
In the last 5 years I have won the Wendouree Club Aggregate twice, in 2003 and in 2007. In 2004, 2005 I did not fly the last two races due to work commitments and health problems, in 2006 I missed the last three races, in all three of those years I narrowly missed winning the Club Aggregate. I have been very lucky to befriend a number of Top pigeon flyers who have always been there when help was needed. Thank you. Hopefully I can give something back to the sport with the pigeons that I have on offer, I am confident that I have tried and proven every pigeon in this sale and that they have the quality racing and breeding potential to improve the standard of anyone’s loft. One thing that is proven time and time again is that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I have tried to make the descriptions for each lot as comprehensive as possible so that the reader does not have to continually flick back and forth through the catalogue to find the breeding of each bird. This cock was a slow trapper, arrived on many occasions with other combine placed birds but was always the last to trap, he loved to crow on the landing board. Flew 500 mile in two successive years.
