Talking pigeons with Steve Eggleton – One of the most Consistent Racing Lofts in Sydney

By Steve Zammit On Saturday 30th June 2012 I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon talking pigeons with Stephen Eggleton of Ku-ring-gai Homing Pigeon Society (KPS) and racing in Sydney’s strong Central Cumberland Federation (CCF). At the time of penning this article Sydney racing had just been suspended due to the PMV1 outbreak so only five races had been flown in the 2012 North West Schedule; three races from Capertee and two races from Mudgee. Leading the CCF Overall point score, the CCF NE Section Short series point score, the CCF Young Bird point score and the KPS averages is Steve Eggleton. In 5 races with around 7,000 birds per week and 350 flyers his results have been: 12th Fed, 1st Fed, 3rd Fed, 2nd Fed and 3rd Fed, sending 22 birds per week and only one pigeon being lost in 5 weeks of racing. Steve says wryly that he would have preferred we didn’t have to stop racing at this time.

Upon arrival at his lofts I was met with incredible construction noise, 5-storey apartment blocks are being built adjacent to his back fence. I asked whether this had been a problem, he said yes but “the tower cranes are landmarks so that must be helping”. Steve says next year when the apartments will be occupied, this will be another challenge to deal with and the primary reason he is scaling back racing from next season.

Steve Eggleton is a “pigeon thinker”. He grew up racing pigeons in Sydney, had a chance to race in the UK (when he lived there for 14 years on business) and has been racing back in Sydney since 2004. When he talks pigeons he talks about “high performance” birds, speed, intelligence, “smart pigeons”. He describes his pigeons like the latest in technology – form, function, performance, reliability, strength, speed. He is a big planner, he strategizes what is required to be competitive given the conditions under which his birds must perform. I asked him to explain.

When Steve decided to move back home to Sydney from the UK, he wanted to bring back some pigeons that could accommodate the local conditions and win. Firstly CCF races a different route each year, 5 routes in a 5 route cycle. He says that if you want to compete each year you need birds that can adapt and can compete in all conditions; head winds, tail winds, strong cross winds. Given the raptor situation in Sydney and across NSW (Steve lives near to Garigal National Park) he needed to ensure his birds had a super temperament, to cope with the falcons and to race widowhood. He needed birds that would perform as young birds but got better as old birds in the race loft. He says birds that are intelligent are easily manageable. Losses are a whole lot less with smart pigeons so you can keep fewer birds to breed from and race. Steve likes quiet, clever, good looking medium size racing pigeons. Big pigeons, corridor pigeons, skittish pigeons, heavy and slow pigeons, can’t be competitive week after week in CCF flying the 5-route cycle.

The great pigeon men all say that if you want to be successful go to the best flyer in your area when “starting-up” and get birds from there. So that’s what he did. In the UK the best flyer in his area was Mr & Mrs E. Corkett and Sons, they raced their family of Wildemeersch (Wildys) which they had blended together for more than 20 years and that was back in 2000/2001. Corketts were legends, one year they topped the Federation 9 weeks in a row with a team of around 20 widowhood cocks; most weeks having multiple birds to win. They were beautiful handling birds, superbly feathered and muscled. The Corkett’s Wildemeersch family “out-performed” locally the Staf Van Reet’s,

Vandenabeele’s, Marcelis, Verheyes, Sootjens and the Janssen based pigeons. The only problem was you couldn’t buy their birds. “Given we became good friends and I was moving back to Australia, eventually they were more than happy to start me off with 3 pairs to bring to Australia”. Since 2002 the Corkett’s have won six UK National races (National Flying Club and Midland National Flying Club) so they are still racing at the highest level and since the original 3 pairs Steve has brought in a further 4 pairs. All the Wildemeersch imports are Brothers, Sisters, Sires or Dams to Federation and National winners. In the Wildy family Steve found everything he wanted in smart, high performance pigeons... and they were mainly Dark Chequers, his favourites.

When the Wildys were on their way from the UK in 2003/2004 Steve decided to buy a pair of Houbens to cross into the Wildys as one of the pairs was very closely inbred. Steve to his credit hand-picked a young hen at Blenhaven stud, a Daughter of the Champion Cinaloha cock, a Grandson of Young Artiest, (purchased by Blenhaven at the Lu Bros Sale for around $10,000) when paired to Champion Ace’s Jewel. This Dark Chequer hen (now the No1 hen) purchased as a young bird was then paired to the Old Pied GB98 Wildy cock. Their first youngster DC Hen KPS 04 2 is Steve’s best ever race hen; winning many prizes including winning the prestigious HD/ KPS InterClub Derby as a baby from Bairnsdale and 1st & 2nd NE Section Mudgee and Dubbo as a 3-year old. This mating then started the Eggleton Wildy/Houben family which then have been crossed to his other lines – Ron Williamson (Northern Irelands Champion Flyer) and Trevor Steed (Central Cumberland’s Champion Flyer). In the last seven seasons (excluding 2012 results), these birds have won 53 x 1st club, 36 x 2nd club, 12 times 1st place in NE Section and 18 times placed in CCF Top 10 and in the last 5 years, Steve Eggleton is only one of two flyers who have been in the CCF Top 30 Overall Championship result in all 5 consecutive years from the 5 different routes; Trevor Steed being the other CCF flyer.

Steve last year gave around 30 youngsters from his widowers to novice and young CCF flyers to race in the 2012 season. Already one youngster has been clocked and in the Top 30 in the Federation result. In 2006 I was gifted a youngster by Steve Eggleton from his race box. It was off Champion hen KPS 04 2 when paired to a Wildy widower. My Dark Chequer cock won for me as 2-year old and topped the section in the combine. I only had one of Steve’s to race, I wished I had a box full!

I asked Steve who he rates as “up there”, the great flyers. He said straight out, Trevor Steed... Steedy is a Master. Trying to compete with Trevor when I was 15 years-old racing with my Dad set the benchmark, the minimum acceptable standard I needed my birds to perform. Steve said Jos Thone had been to Steve’s loft in Sydney, and Steve has been to Jos’s in Belgium and yes Jos is very impressive, he’s on a different level and 4 times World Champion! Steve takes joy in handling champion pigeons and jumps at a chance whenever the opportunity arises. Ronnie Williamson is amazing. Steve visited him in Northern Ireland and had the opportunity to handle many of his Champions, including “Millennium Superstar”, the World’s Greatest Sprinter. This pigeon and Jos Thone’s “Deep Impact” gave Steve “goose-bumps”; he says if top pigeons don’t do that to you, you are missing out! Steve says Billy Eastcott handled his No1 hen when she was only about 2-3 years old, he got “goose-bumps”. The late Harold Williams also got the “tingle” when he handled the No1 hen, Harold loved that hen and she won Grand Champion at the KPS show the 3 years she was entered.

I asked Steve about racing and position. He says position is important but so is loft design and loft orientation. Steve has a small set-up and his loft faces south and is only metres from the family

swimming pool. Everything about the loft orientation is wrong, but he makes it work. The same with location, you need pigeons to be out in front setting their own line of flight. Steve races out on his own in St Ives, many of his performances prove that his birds are front runners and don’t stay with the pack. He says his widowers just say “see you later, I’m out of here”. But unfortunately as front runners, they are prone to being whacked by the peregrines. So it’s hard to race widowers past 3years old here in Sydney which is a real shame, he said.

Finally, I asked Steve about motivation. He says basically his bird’s race to him and to their perch or box. Every year the best birds show they will be great before they win. They show you something.

For example this year, the first round young bird sprint cocks were in with the 16 widowers. One of the widowers was lost to the falcon, of the 14 young cocks, the one that “won the battle” for the vacant widower nest box was KPS 11 201. He has since won 1st Club, 1st NE Section, 1st CCF Open Capertee 339 Flyers, 6,798 birds. 201 is a true widower, it’s bred into him, motivated by his box and what it means to him.

Summing up... Steve says you just have to enjoy it all. Keep only good birds, fewer birds are better, feed the best quality grain, and maintain a happy and hygienic loft. With patience and observation the results will come.
