BACKGROUND and HISTORY My family of pigeons are almost entirely Janssen based. Over the past 10 years I have concentrated on middle distance racing and have selected my stock birds with the aim of producing pigeons capable of topping the Fed at distances between 250 miles (400 kilometres) and 450 miles (700 kms). My favourite races are the classic 300 and 400 mile races such as the Young Bird Derbies and 5 Bird Nationals. I get a great thrill from all day flies – around 9 to 11 hours on the wing and this is what I have been concentrating my breeding efforts on over the past 10 years. Since 2004 this family of birds has produced two (2) NCF Fed Breeders Plate winners (in 2004 from Cobar and in 2010 from Byron Bay) as well as four (4) Coalfields Combine Breeders Plate winners (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012). My birds have won 1st NCF Fed Opens on 10 separate occasions in the 7 seasons that I have raced since 2004 at distances ranging from Dunedoo (219 kms) to Gympie (720kms) when I experienced the thrill of a lifetime in timing in the only bird on the day in the Federation. This family produces a lot of very consistent race birds who are first to my loft on multiple occasions during the season. I often get a number of birds in the first drop for instance in 2008 when I dropped 4 birds together from Cobar (557 kms) to win 1st Fed YBD as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Coalfields Breeders Plate. Two weeks later I dropped 3 together to win 1st Fed Emmdale (697 kms) as well as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th NCF Fed Breeders Plate (these results can be verified on the NCF website). In 2004, again from Emmdale, 5 birds landed together to win 1st NCF Fed Open with one bird and 1st Fed Gold Band Ring Race with one of the other 4 birds. In 2010, 3 birds landed together when I won 1st Fed YBD and 1st Fed Breeders Plate from Byron Bay (492kms). In 2008 from Nyngan (430 kms) I landed the most birds I had ever done in the first drop – 16. One of these birds was 2nd Fed Open and another was 2nd Fed Blue Band Ring Race. Last year I dropped 10 birds together from Lightning Ridge (498 kms) to win 1st Club 9th Fed. The foundation of my loft was a champion Janssen Cock bred for me to race by my great friend and mentor Eddie Furze. This pigeon Newcastle 95 3828 was a top class race bird who in 3 seasons won 3 races and 4 minor placings. He was 5th Fed Narrabri (314 kms @ 1307 mpm), 10th Fed Moree (394 kms @ 938 mpm) and 6th Fed Brunswick Heads in a smash race (no birds on the day) 500 kms @ 609 mpm. I nicknamed him “The Phantom” because he would just appear on the landing board, most races we wouldn’t see him coming. Two of his full brothers were champion racers for Eddie’s racing partner Greg Crawley on the Central Coast, 467 winning 6 individual races and 2421 winning 4 separate races. Both these cocks topped the Central Coast Fed. After racing 3828 for 3 years, I returned him to Eddie to put into his stock loft. He bred a couple of winners for Eddie and Greg and then in 2002 I borrowed him to pair to a particular hen. After I had bred 2 rounds off him, Eddie generously told me I could keep him as he had several brothers and sisters in stock. In the next 5 years, that is from the age of 7 to 12 years old, 3828 left a dynasty of winners and producers in my loft. He is Sire and Grand Sire of Fed winners and I have bred winners down from him in every generation to the 5th generation so far. When he was 12 years old for instance, he produced 1st Fed Gilgandra (294 kms), 2nd Fed Nyngan (428 kms), 2nd Fed Blue Band Ring Race and 4th Adelaide Pigeon Club (one loft race) from Stirling North with 4 different pigeons when paired to 2 different hens. Unfortunately 3828 filled only 1 egg in 2009 and he died in 2012 at the grand old age of 17. The Phantom preferred head wind races and this is a trait that he has passed on to many of his children, grand children, etc. The Phantom is bred off an inbred Stamvater/Sheer Elegance Slate Chequer Cock that was purchased at Bob Appleby’s sale in 1995. His dam was the good Blue Bar Hen Cenco 93 6090 who was in turn a daughter of two legendary producers – QPF 85 315 and Cenco 92 5658. 5658 is Eddie’s famous “Blue Hen” and was bred by John Hanson (Blenhaven Stud). 5658 has produced over 20 Fed winners in her children alone as well as being Grand Dam, Great Grand Dam and Great, Great Grand Dam to many, many more. She was a once in a lifetime breeder and produced winners with every cock she was paired to. The parents of The Phantom really clicked and produced many winners, most of them multiple prize winners. In 2004 I paired The Phantom to an inbred John Pryor hen (Mait 02 584) and hit the jackpot. 584 was bred from a grandson of John Pryor’s Reference A and an inbred daughter of John’s Morundah Hen (the pairing was the 21st Century Cock and his mother The Morundah Hen). I bred 4 pigeons off The Phantom and 584, 2
cocks and 2 hens. Both cocks were lost in a very bad toss that I had early in the season however the 2 hens raced particularly well. 090 won 1st Club 4th Fed Blue Band Ring Race from Eden 508 kms and 1st Club 4th Fed from Orbost 624 kms. The next season she was 1st Club 8th Fed from Yamba 401 kms and then 1st Club 3rd Fed National from Redcliffe 626 kms. Her nestmate sister (089) was a very consistent racer who was 4 times in the clock for 3 seconds and a third place. I paired 3828 the same way in 2005 and sent one of his daughters (Mait 05 933) to the Adelaide Pigeon Club. On the same day that 090 won the Club National and was 3rd NCF Fed from 400 miles here, her full sister 933 took 1st place in the Adelaide Club from The Twins, also 400 miles and won $5,000. All 3 of these hens were then put into stock only for some low life to break into my loft on 4th December 2006 and steal 089, 090 and 13 other pigeons. In January 2007 I paired The Phantom to his daughter Mait 05 933 (The Twins winner) and bred 2 rounds for stock to replace some of these stolen pigeons. He filled 3 eggs and these 3 youngsters were all put into stock. All 3 have produced Fed winners and all are in this sale – Mait 06 351 Blue Bar Cock is Lot 28, Newcastle 06 1394 Blue Bar Cock is Lot 32 and Newcastle 06 1393 Blue Bar Hen is my Number 1 Stock Hen and is Lot 21. After the theft of these stock birds from my loft, Eddie gave me a couple of young birds to help replace the stolen pigeons. One of these pigeons is now my Number 1 Stock cock. Cenco 06 1709 and he was bred off a full brother to The Phantom when paired to the Dam of Greg Crawley’s Bundaberg Fed smash winner. 1709 is the Sire of 3 Fed winners including the Gympie winner in 2010 who was the only bird on the day in the NCF Fed. Another influential pigeon for me was “Scarface” – Blue Bar White Flight Cock Mait 03 2088, again bred for me to race by Eddie Furze. Scarface was a great race bird and in his last 4 races he was 3rd Fed Nyngan (428 kms), 3rd Fed Cobar (555 kms) , 2nd Fed Cobar (555 kms) and finally capped his career by winning 1st Fed 5 Bird National from Emmdale (697 kms). Unfortunately I killed Scarface by mistake in February 2009. Scarface was a blend of Eddie’s great producers Octagonal x The Blue Hen and Grenville’s Evans great producers Braveheart x Blue Moon. Two of Scarface’s children (who have both produced several winners) are in this sale – see Lots 11 and 55. Following my success with racing Scarface and other pigeons with that cross of Eddie Furze Janssens and the Grenville Evans Janssens, I went looking for some hens off Grenville Evans bloodlines to pair with my Eddie Furze family. Greg Hamilton had some of the best of Grenville’s birds and in 2009 I purchased a hen off top producing Cock Mr.G. This hen, SA 08 27394, has been a gold mine. As a daughter of Mr G I have named her “Gigi”. In her first 3 seasons she has produced a series of outstanding race birds with 2 different cocks. Last year, when paired to a son of The Phantom, one of her daughters Mait 11 255 was 1st Fed Wee Waa (341 kms) @ 1168 mpm and 2 weeks later was 2nd Fed Collarenebri (451 kms) @ 1088 mpm. This hen had 5 starts and could have won 4 club races – her first start she landed with a group of birds and wasn’t clocked and in her last start from Lightning Ridge, she landed with 9 other birds and wouldn’t trap despite me trying to coax her in. She would have been 1st Club 10th Fed. In her first year in stock, “Gigi”, when paired to the “Son of Scarface” produced a daughter (Mait 09 705) who was 1st Club 3rd Fed Taree (123 kms) and then 1st Club, 1st Combine 25th Fed Yamba (400 kms) winning the club’s jackpot pool on both occasions. I didn’t race the 2011 season but bred a pair the same way as 705 for Terry Bradbury (Cessnock Club) and he trapped the cock bird twice to win 2nd Club, 2nd Combine Taree and then 3rd Club 3rd Combine Port Macquarie. “Gigi” and several of her children including both the winning hens mentioned above, are in this sale. These pigeons have given me tremendous pleasure and success and I hope that everyone that purchases them will have as much enjoyment and success as I have had. My number 1 stock hen. Bred off father and daughter for stock – unraced. The Princess is Dam of 1st Fed Gympie 2010 (only bird on the day) 720 kms @ 1087.6 mpm. Clocked at 5:45 pm just before dark. The Gympie Hen had already been 3rd Club Coffs Harbour and =1st Club Byron Bay. 1393 is Dam of 1st Club, 1st Combine, 2nd Fed 5 Bird National Emmdale 697 kms in 2008. This was a smash race, only 1 bird on the day and only 3 birds in the Fed after 2 days. The Princess is also Dam of 1st Club, 1st Combine, 3rd Fed Orbost 624 kms in 2009 and 1st Club, 1st Combine, 4th Fed Collarenebri 452 kms. Each of these 4 winning pigeons was produced with a different cock bird. She is Dam of 2 Coalfields Combine Breeders Plate winners and Grand Dam of a 1st Cessnock Breeders Plate winner and a 2nd Coalfields Combine B/Plate winner. The 2nd Fed Emmdale National Hen mentioned above is a top producer in her own right and both she and the Gympie winner are in this sale.

933 was sent to the Adelaide Pigeon Club as a squeaker and won the 4th race of the 5 race series from The Twins, a distance of approx. 400 miles, arriving on her own 3 minutes in front of the next pigeon and winning $5,000. She was paired to her father The Phantom in January 2007 and produced 3 squeakers including Reference B and her 2 brothers New 06 1394 and Mait 06 351. All 3 have produced Fed winners with Reference B being the most outstanding producer. I borrowed The Phantom’s brother (when The Phantom stopped filling eggs) from Eddie Furze to pair to 933 to try to produce more Stock birds as closely bred to Reference B and her 2 brothers as possible. I gave a pair bred this way to Brett George (turned out to be 2 hens) and both have bred club winners for him in each of the past 2 seasons. There is a lovely young hen bred this way that I selected for stock (before deciding to sell my pigeons) in this sale – refer Lot 27, as well as Reference B (Lot 21) and her 2 brothers (Lots 28 and 32).

In 2010 she was paired to BBC Cess 08 3122 (a son of Scarface) and produced 1st Club 3rd Fed Taree, 1st Club 1st Combine Yamba, 1st Club, 5th Fed Blue Band Ring Race. The following season I didn’t race but I bred a pair the same way for Terry Bradbury of Cessnock Club to race – they were a pair of Cocks and one of them was trapped twice by Terry to win 2nd Club Taree and 3rd Club Port Macquarie. In 2011 I paired Gigi with Mait 08 115 (a son of The Phantom) and she produced 4 top quality youngsters. Slate Chq Hen Mait 11 255 was 1st Fed Wee Waa and 2nd Fed Collarenebri (had 5 race starts and could have won 4 club races). I have already put 3 of her youngsters into stock – see Lots 37, 40 and 47.

Then 2 weeks later she landed with 2 other pigeons to be =1st Fed YBD from Byron Bay – flying 492 kms @ 1135 mpm and winning the Fed by over 4 minutes. As her mother had escaped from my loft earlier in the year, I selected 736 to replace her Dam in the stock loft.

In 2010 this hen and her nestmate were very consistent race birds. 725 was 3rd Club Port Macquarie and then she landed with 2 other hens to be =1st Club 1st Combine Byron Bay (winning the Club by 13 minutes). On 17th September she homed at 5:46:49pm after 11 hours and 2 minutes on the wing to be the only pigeon home in the NCF before midnight. Her nestmate sister Mait 09 724 had 9 races before being lost at Gympie. She was in the first 10 pigeons to my loft on 5 occasions. “The Gympie Winner” is quite inbred and should make a good stock pigeon. Her Dam is bred from Father x daughter whilst her Sire is a first cousin to her Dam.
Last season was her first at stock and 2 of her daughters were each 2nd Club Breeza. A son flew to Collarenebri and was then injured. He was kept to race again this year. In 2012 she was paired to her Grand Father to try to breed some potential stock pigeons, however he failed to fill anything in 4 rounds of eggs.

The Wee Waa Fed winner. This young hen had 5 starts in 2012 and could have won 4 club races. Her first start was from Breeza on 24/6 when she landed with my winner but wasn’t clocked. Her next start was again from Breeza on 19/8 when we resumed racing after the PMV scare and she was off the pace. Next start was from Wee Waa on 1/9 when she came by herself and topped the Fed by 28 seconds from Doug Bice at Tarro but was over 6 minutes clear of third place. She won the Club and Coalfields Combine by over 8 minutes. Two weeks later she was 1st Club 1st Coalfields Combine and 2nd Fed from Collarenebri 452kms @ 1088 mpm. She won the Combine by 4minutes and 40 seconds and Maitland Club with 14 minutes and 47 seconds to spare. Her last start was Lightning Ridge (499kms) on 30/9/12 when she landed with 9 other pigeons and stood on the landing board looking at meinstead of running for the yankee trap! As I tried to coax her into the trap, the trap became full with 7 other pigeons and I reluctantly clocked one of them to win 1st Club 10th Fed @ 1269mpm. “The Pocket Rocket” was my 5 Birder and so her time and velocity is recorded on the NCF website (1268.2 mpm) which would have clearly won Maitland Club and still been 10th Fed). When 255 topped the Fed from Wee Waa, my next 2 pigeons arrived together 6 minutes behind her. They were 255’s full brother and sister and would have run 3rd and 4th Fed if we allowed multiple trapping. I bred 4 pigeons the same way as 255 and all 4 of them raced very well in 2012. Her sister was =2nd Club Breeza twice as well being my second pigeon behind 255 when she won Wee Waa. Her best brother (Mait 11 201) was also second pigeon behind her from Wee Waa and was then stopped and put into stock (based on his type, breeding, performance and eye). Her nestmate brother was my fourth pigeon behind her from Collarenebri.

246 is bred off a full brother and sister and is a magnificent young stock cock. In his first season at stock I paired him with my No. 1 hen (Reference B) and bred 3 rounds. They produced 3 hens and 3 cocks. 1st Fed YBD Byron Bay and 1st Fed Breeders Plate Byron Bay Bred by Ron Hunt of Parkes Club and purchased by me at a Fed Breeders Plate Sale. “The Huntsman” was a tremendous race pigeon and produced good pigeons last year in his first season at stock. As a young bird I started him at Port Macquarie where he was my 8th bird home. He then landed with 10 other birds from Coffs Harbour to be =3rd Club. His next start was Yamba where, in a hard race, he came by himself winning 1st Club 1st Combine 6th Fed @ 1069 mpm. Then he was sent to the YBD and Fed Breeders Plate from Byron Bay. “The Huntsman” arrived with 2 other pigeons and was clocked to win 1st Fed YBD and 1st Fed Breeders Plate – 492 kms @ 1135 mpm. He won the Fed Derby by over 4 and ½ minutes. I phoned Ron Hunt after getting the Breeders Plate result and he told me that 4197 was mostly Janssen. For the last 2 seasons I have paired him to the “The National Hen” (Reference F). He is Sire of 2nd Club 2nd Combine 3rd Fed Wee Waa, 3rd Coalfields Combine Breeders Plate Collarenebri and 5th Club Breeza in his first season.

A top race hen and now a top stock hen. 207 was =5th Club Merriwa, =5th Club Gilgandra and then 1st Club 1st Combine 2nd Fed National from Emmdale in an absolute smash of a race. Greg Restall got the only National pigeon on the day whilst Vic Smola trapped the only Open Fed pigeon in daylight. Rodney Howe clocked an Open pigeon at about 8:30 in the dark. I trapped 207 at 7:58am on the second morning – 692 kms at 665 mpm. The next National pigeon was about 11:30 am and 4th place was filled about 4:30pm. Only one other bird was timed in on the third morning for a total of 5 birds in race time. This is one of my favourite pigeons. She is a beautiful type and was a very good race bird. She was = 1st Club 1st Combine Yamba and then 2 weeks later 1st Club 1st Combine Byron Bay winning the club by over 13 minutes and the combine by over 6 minutes. She then went to the YBD and was the next pigeon home after my 3 equal Fed winners had landed. Her last start was Gympie when she homed sometime after 7:30pm (I found her in the loft at 4:30am).
