Testimonial My association with Leo Sylvester in the SCF goes back over 50 years. In that time I came to realize that Leo was a champion of our sport in every sense of the term. He really needs no introduction and we all know that he has won all there is to win in the sport. His dedication to the sport as a flyer and Club and SCF Committee Member was justly rewarded with his SCF Life Membership award in 1995. It was sad to be informed of Leo’s passing and the realization that he will no longer be there to compete and offer his advice or assistance at club and fed racing. He loved his birds and they loved him and there was a definite rapport between Leo and his birds. This can only be achieved with a special quality of bird and Leo had plenty of these. These birds have the reputation of top results in our classic racing and now they have also done it from the early ones as well. To be truthful Leo would have won many more prizes if his trapping technique had been a bit better. But he would not keep the birds hungry just to get a better trap. This is why he probably specialized in the longer races and it was not a surprise to anyone when his name was read out at the top of the list in our classic races. His win with the only bird on the day from Launceston (850kms) in 2007 was what we have come to expect from Leo’s birds in the longer races. What was unusual were the wins and prizes Leo was able to achieve in recent years in the shorter races with the introduction of the European Speed pigeons. The training methods did not change but the ability of these new birds in their sprinting ability is obvious with the regularity that Leo was able to get multiple birds in the first kit week after week in our shorter races. Last year he was placed second in our sprint series and I know that if the birds had have trapped direct the results would have been a lot closer. This year he was also right up there with the leaders and who knows what may have been the result had he not passed away. His son and racing partner, Terry, due to circumstances of family and work commitments, cannot continue to race these birds now or in the immediate future. Terry also loves his pigeons and has decided to keep a core group of stock and has reluctantly made the decision to release the entire race loft and a majority of Leo’s stock birds for auction to the pigeon fraternity. These birds have always had the reputation of top results in our SCF Classic Racing and now they have also done it from the early ones as well. I know these birds and I can say that they are top quality and would be a worthy acquisition to ANY loft. I wish Terry and his family all the best in the future and hope that one day the Sylvester name will return to our racing ranks and the success of the past continue.

REFERENCE PIGEONS Ref A - BBH QPF-99-5567 “KARIN” (REVELATION VAN LOON HEN) (Lot 99) This hen was purchased at Joe Reeves (Ex Central Coast) disposal sale. She is by a John Swan Van Loon BBC IGBF 693 from a Van Loon BBH PRF 98 15362 daughter of the “18601” Des Sippets No.1 Van Loon cock bred by Planets Bros. This hen’s full sister bred three winners for Joe in her first year at stock. We visited Joe’ before his sale and questioned why he was selling such an obvious quality hen, I actually told Joe “he was crazy”. After purchasing her, I named her “KARIN” after my wife. This hen just seemed to me to have the perfect stock hen type. I was certain and she has proved me right. In her first 3 years at stock she bred our best performers on each of those years, all multiple performers. Her children just have that little bit extra! Her genes now run through many of our birds. She has proven herself to be a producer of very smart racers but more importantly these birds reproduce e.g., just last year her son bred our SCF James Crawford Young Bird National Winner with only his second daughter we raced, his first daughter raced was a double winner the previous year . Ref A is a very large hen and has very thick legs, hence her life ring has been removed. Sire: BBC IGBF-93- 693 John Swan Van Loon Dam: BBH PRF-98-15362 daughter of ‘18601’ Des Sippets No.1 Van Loon Cock

Ref B - BCC WV-98-2716 “OLD TOM” This cock was bred by Tom Wills, CCF. He came to us via Andrew & Jane Carrington. I had visited them when they were pairing up. With only a small stock loft they couldn’t find a spare nest box. Because of our good friendship and as the cock containing Van Loon blood (something we specialise in) they offered him to us. This cock was a sensation from his first nest with us. So much so that every hen was a multiple performer and every cock went straight to the breeding pen without racing. Firstly he was mated to “Ref A” and we thought “well he is mated to the top hen”, but he backed that up the following year with a different hen. For example last year in three consecutive weeks his daughters achieved 1st Club (4th Fed), 1st Club (1st Fed- 1st Keith Savage Interfed SCF Combine) then 1st Club (4th Fed again). One hen has had 9 starts for 4 wins or equal wins. Another hen 5 starts for 2 wins, another 5 starts for 2 equal wins, and another 6 starts for 2 wins. That’s not including placings. These birds are only starting to repeat their sires successes in stock and dad’s birds for sale here today are loaded with this blood. “OLD TOM” hails from some exceptional birds. The sire’s side contains the blood of the “18601” Des Sippets best Van Loon Cock (his blood also contained in Ref A “KARIN - The Revelation Hen”). The Dams side contains Des Sippets best Staf Van Reet BBH GB 90 48120. The apple hasn’t fallen far from 6 of 26

the tree with “OLD TOM”. Andrew has told me that he owes so must of their success to the generosity of Tom for all the good pigeons and friendship he has given.

Ref C - BBH SCF-05-97 “ZIRCON” A gift from Andrew and Jane Carrington. Andrew purchased a pair of youngsters from Jeff Sheppard. These turned out to be “97 ZIRCON” and her nest mate sister “98” TOPAZ”. Andrew kept “98” and gave us “97”. In her first breeding year we mated her to REF D and only raced 3 birds. The cock 6223 (Lot 85) was our best race cock for the year with a win, a second club and a win the following year, he was ultra consistency. The two sister 6222 & 6210 (Lot 4) both multiple prized. All were stocked, 6223 has since bred two double winners and 6210 bred a fastest in the fed last year. The next year she was mated to our “THE CHAMP” BBPC SCF 05 5011, Dad’s best ever race cock to 400 miles, racing 3 hens for a win (3rd fed), an equal winner, a 3rd Club Derby, a 2nd from Seaspray (prized in SCF – YBD). The Seaspray hen bred our James Crawford YOUNG BIRD NATIONAL WINNER last year. The next year “97” was mated to REF B “OLD TOM”. Then it started raining prizes winners. As above (last year in three consecutive weeks her daughters achieved 1st Club (4th Fed), 1st Club (1st Fed- 1st Keith Savage Interfed SCF Combine) then 1st Club (4th Fed again). Incidentally Andrew & Janes “98”(TOPAZ) bred their great hen “Triple Treat” equal 1st Fed three weeks in a row, beaten the last time by her daughter, and many other good performances. You would go a long way to find a better nest pair than “97” & “98”. Jeff Sheppard also kept a full sister for stock and it has produced a number of Fed prizes for him. Jeff gave me the last single egg laid by the dam of these hens (the big Van Loon hen). We raised a cock which produced BCH SCF 08 1954 (Lot 84) this sale, and she is a double winner.

Ref D - BBC CD-97-309 “ALF” (Lot 72) Bred by Ray hunt and would be one of the very few grandchildren of the some of the original imports still alive. We attained him as an aged bird. We had been trying to get hold of him for some years. We paired him the first year to a Mark Schubert (Herbot) hen and bred the super racer BCH IGBF 07 619 (Lot 70)”The Witch”. In her first 13 starts she was first bird 8 times. Initially a winner but refused to trap, she was a true leader and first batched on the southern route many times, one of those on Gold Band day when she only managed equal 5th combine. The following year we decided to go a bit closer on the Van Loon blood with him and so mated him to REF C ZIRCON Breeding 6223 (Lot 85), 6210 (Lot 4) & 6222. He has even produced a winner as far out as Ouyen 500 miles, good birds, racing and stock. See REF C ZIRCON for details. “ALF” is a vital cock for his age still of strong body and didn’t miss an egg last breeding season, we mated him the last two years mostly for stock to keep the Van Loon blood pure.

Ref E – BCC SCF-95-4544 “THE ACE” Although older than most of these reference birds, this cock’s blood still runs through our birds. We loaned a very good ‘Gold Band’ producing cock off the super Hunt Van Loon pair of John Swan’s with the purpose to mate it to our very good stock hen ”The Parkes Hen”, and share the young. Ref E was the product of that pair. “The Parkes Hen” was purchased from the late Archie Robinsons sale and was his best stock hen. Her first two daughters to race achieved 2nd SCF National on a very hard day (beaten by a 30km shorter marker) and 3rd SCF Combine Grand Prix the following week. 8 of 26

She was renowned to put the “stick” into her progeny, there are many other good birds around today down from this hen. Ref E was the best sire in the loft for a number of years. He produced 2nd SCF Combine Gold Band Coffs Harbour 300 miles, 3rd SCF Combine Grand Prix Ballina 400 miles, 2nd fastest Fed Coffs Harbour 300 miles and Dad won Ballina 400 miles in 2002 dropping two together, both were by this cock to different hens, just to name a few. One daughter bred for stock produced our “Champ” Dad’s best race cock, only raced to 400 mile, 5 races in one year he was in the leading batch of birds to hit the coast. The more wind on the nose the better he became. Ref E “THE ACE” is a half-brother to John Goodwin’s (WPF, Melbourne) top Van Loon Cock.

Reference Note: We purchased 12 pigeons at Andrew & Jane Carrington’s Complete Disposal Sale in 2010. I knew the birds as well as anyone however the results from those purchases have certainly exceeded our expectations. I have also followed with great interest how other flyers that purchased birds from that sale have performed with them. The results have been spectacular from such a small team of birds. We concentrated on the principle bird “The Replacement Cock” BBC-BELG-01-6524723 (sold for $7,000), he is a son of “Grote Tom” the No. 1 Breeding cock for Staf Van Reet Belgium when he was mated to a “Klein 734” a granddaughter to ‘Jonge Donkere Witpen Daniel’. There are two sons of the “Replacement Cock” in this Sale. This catalogue is loaded with “The Replacement Cocks” genetics. All of Dad’s distance (400 miles plus) birds are being sold, no exceptions. There are some really exceptional birds. 1st SCF FEDERATION Tasmania Combine winner (only bird home on the day with one hour of daylight to spare) amongst them. A son and daughter direct off Dad’s good friend Brian Rae’s “Wonder Couple”. An outstanding producing and reproducing pair at the distance in the SCF.

Lot 124 BCPH SCF-10-3810 Very consistent race hen. Flew the Towradgi classic last year and kept for a 2yo. This “flighty” family showed plenty of promise last year, the only year we had to try them. Dam: BBH-SCF-04-8849 (Lot 135). A terrific O’Brien Harrison hen. 1st club Ballina 400 miles 2nd SCF Grand Prix Combine. 1st club Mallacoota, equal 3rd Western Suburbs Club Derby, 1st Wests club Sale race. A very appropriate last lot. Old Australian family, mostly Dad’s O’Brien Harrisons with crosses as the years went by. A terrifically tough hen that could always be relied upon. This hen’s pedigree can be traced back to the early 1950’s to Dad’s champion “Frill Pair”. A line littered with Combine wins. Lot 135
