Preamble/Introduction Lenny Katen, “Kato” to his many friends kept and raced pigeons in the Port Macquarie Panther Pigeon Club, affiliated with the Mid North Coast Pigeon Federation for over 15 years. For many years previous to this Len raced in Sydney where he enjoyed many successes with his birds and was a keen competitor at all distances especially on the North Coast Route. His early family of pigeons consisted mainly of the old “McLean” birds many of which were sourced from Ted Jones and the “Appleby” family of birds obtained from several sources. Then in 2004 he befriended Paul Gibbs who had just relocated to the Port Macquarie district from Sydney. Paul brought with him his family of Van Loons and it wasn’t long before a friendship developed that saw Len gradually obtain many birds from Paul. Such was his success with these birds (especially on one day races) that Len eventually replaced most of his “old” family with Paul’s Van Loons. Len would say that on one-day races that they were a mile in front of his “old” family, so much so that eventually most of the old bloodline were replaced. Paul either gifted and/or loaned birds to Len each year, ensuring that Len had young birds to race and road test for him off each of his Van Loon lines that include the Ray Hunt “Scrumpy” line, those off the Campbell Strange (USA) “Senna” and “Verona” line, as well as the “Silver Shadows”, Grenville Evans, Ponderosa, Des Sippet and Raven Van Loons. Len tested many of Paul’s new acquisitions with many of these birds being represented in this sale catalogue. Note: For those purchaser’s who would like a full pedigree of birds they might purchase, Paul advises that on evidence (copies of Prize Cards) of any of their progeny’s successful race results that where possible he would provide a detailed computer generated pedigree.

The breeding of this cock is all “Rocky” the champion Short Distance winner of all Holland who’s sire was imported by Des Sippets. These “Rocky” Janssen’s have continued to produce top class race birds throughout Australia.
