Preface Due to illness Kevin will be moving to his brother’s house and has been forced to sell off his stock birds. All race birds are currently with Craig Porter and are competing in this year’s QRPF race schedule.

Several pairs of stock will be retained to maintain an interest but the vast majority must be sold as they cannot be housed at Kevin’s brother’s home.

Kevin’s family of birds go back to the 1960’s, which are mainly the old Brisbane long distance lines, although he is quick to point out that he considers them to be middle distance birds now that he has added Staf van Reets/Mueleman/Janssen crosses into them.

Kevin clearly remembers purchasing a bird, number 1084 at auction back in 1969 that was down off the O’Toole’s champion pair of 1644 x 2002, a well-known pair of Brisbane distance stock birds. He also obtained a pied cock from Len Gates in 1957 that was off the champion Randall birds 1556 (Mackay 820klms Open Fed winner) and a cock known as “Champ”. This line of birds were dominating the long distance races back in the 60’s and 70’s and are still found in the breeding of the better long distance Brisbane birds of today.

Kevin is quick to point out that his best distance birds today can all be traced back to these two stock birds Of course other birds have been added to the breeding lines over the years, such as Harrison and Balfe lines, particularly ones with what Kevin calls good “eye sign”.

In recent years a Bricoux cock given to him as a gift from Craig has bred 2nd Open Fed Bowen 970 klms and 4th Quilpie Fed 820 klms, both clocked during the night. A grizzle from B Haimes has also played a big part in the family over the years and the grizzle colour is often found among his good winners to this day.

As well in recent years a Staf van Reet from G & P Duscha crossed with the old blood has also played a big part in his present day birds. A Blue Bar hen from this line is 1104 QPF 07, she is a big hen with a strong pearl eye and she bred 2nd National from a hard Charleville 685 klm race in 2010 and 6th National 730 klms as well as his first two birds home from Thargomindah 920 klms and is the Grand dam of the Noccundra 1030 klm Fed winner.

There will be no reserve on the birds and all must be sold. They bred last season and these birds would be of benefit to any loft.

Testimonial by Craig Porter I first met Kevin in the back yard of Joe Kaciuba’s place who lived near my parents’ home. Kevin was on National Service, and along with his cousin Roy brought a small crate with a few pigeons around to offer Joe. One of the birds was a blue cheq pied cock WHC 67 454 that Kevin had earlier picked out of about 15 or so of Joe’s birds based on eye sign, all of the 15 had flown Windorah 1030klms for Joe. Joe pointed out in his broken Polish English that he had plenty of that blood, as he had already clocked a brother to that bird in Townsville 1060klms. Kevin offered the bird to me and as a 13 year old boy, with no money, I greatfully accepted, as any pigeon that had flown 700 miles was gold to me back then. Kevin told Joe that he bred a pair of young out of 454 mated to 1084, a hen that he had brought from Stan Moffatt. This hen had O’Toole’s famous 1644 x 2002 blood in her and Kevin gave these young to Joe to race. That North was particularly tough and the series finished at Mackay 500 miles with Joe finishing 2nd Fed to Herbie Knoblaugh.

After the Mackay race Ian Howard organised a race from Townsville for anyone interested, and 55 pigeons went to this long distance race point, being released on the Saturday. Late on the Sunday morning I jumped the fence and was sitting talking with Joe about whether or not any of these birds would make it home, when suddenly a Blue Bar WF hen landed at 12.20pm to win the race by over four hours! That hen was one of the youngsters that Kevin had given him out of 454, the very cock that Kevin had picked out from Joe’s birds based on eye sign alone. 454 went on to sire my 1st Fed Townsville and the blood runs through most of my birds to this day.

Kevin has always been a good selector of stock and maintaining a family of birds. He greatly admired the eye sign of Jim Watson’s Townsville Fed winner. Young birds that I purchased at Jim sale, following his untimely death, were related to this winner, and based on Kevin’s early advice to linebreed this family has kept them winning for me up to the present time.

Since Kevin and I started racing from my loft, it’s no fluke that as the distance increases his pigeons get better and better, this because of his knowledge of breeding and selecting using eye sign. Believe it or not, it works for Kevin and he will not get an argument from me.

These pigeons also cross well with the shorter distance birds, such as his Mitchell Fed winner and top birds from Moree and Walgett in 2011.
